7. Correlation between two non-linear events in a complex dusty plasma system

Abstract

A phenomenological model using fluid theory is developed to show that the decay of two seemingly independent nonlinear structures namely the dust void and dust soliton strongly depends on the plasma ionization parameter in an unmagnetized complex plasma system. Numerical solution of model equations has shown that the evolution of dust voids and their subsequent decay in a time frame is intimately related with the ionization parameter. A similar result also holds good in case of dust solitons where stability of soliton is found to depend critically upon ionization parameter. Most importantly, it is observed that time of the collapse of a dust soliton precedes the onset time of a dust void decay and therefore soliton decay acts as a precursor for void decay to occur in a given dusty plasma system., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures

9. Compressive sensing with low-power transfer and accurate reconstruction of EEG signals

Abstract

Tele-monitoring of EEG in WBAN is essential as EEG is the most powerful physiological parameters to diagnose any neurological disorder. Generally, EEG signal needs to record for longer periods which results in a large volume of data leading to huge storage and communication bandwidth requirements in WBAN. Moreover, WBAN sensor nodes are battery operated which consumes lots of energy. The aim of this research is, therefore, low power transmission of EEG signal over WBAN and its accurate reconstruction at the receiver to enable continuous online-monitoring of EEG and real time feedback to the patients from the medical experts. To reduce data rate and consequently reduce power consumption, compressive sensing (CS) may be employed prior to transmission. Nonetheless, for EEG signals, the accuracy of reconstruction of the signal with CS depends on a suitable dictionary in which the signal is sparse. As the EEG signal is not sparse in either time or frequency domain, identifying an appropriate dictionary is paramount. There are a plethora of choices for the dictionary to be used. Wavelet bases are of interest due to the availability of associated systems and methods. However, the attributes of wavelet bases that can lead to good quality of reconstruction are not well understood. For the first time in this study, it is demonstrated that in selecting wavelet dictionaries, the incoherence with the sensing matrix and the number of vanishing moments of the dictionary should be considered at the same time. In this research, a framework is proposed for the selection of an appropriate wavelet dictionary for EEG signal which is used in tandem with sparse binary matrix (SBM) as the sensing matrix and ST-SBL method as the reconstruction algorithm. Beylkin (highly incoherent with SBM and relatively high number of vanishing moments) is identified as the best dictionary to be used amongst the dictionaries are evaluated in this thesis. The power requirements for the proposed framework are also quantified using a power model. The outcomes will assist to realize the computational complexity and online implementation requirements of CS for transmitting EEG in WBAN. The proposed approach facilitates the energy savings budget well into the microwatts range, ensuring a significant savings of battery life and overall system’s power. The study is intended to create a strong base for the use of EEG in the high-accuracy and low-power based biomedical applications in WBAN.

Abstract

Substantial experimental and theoretical efforts worldwide are devoted to explore the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter. At LHC and top RHIC energies, QCD matter is studied at very high temperatures and nearly vanishing net-baryon densities. There is evidence that a Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP) was created at experiments at RHIC and LHC. The transition from the QGP back to the hadron gas is found to be a smooth cross over. For larger net-baryon densities and lower temperatures, it is expected that the QCD phase diagram exhibits a rich structure, such as a first-order phase transition between hadronic and partonic matter which terminates in a critical point, or exotic phases like quarkyonic matter. The discovery of these landmarks would be a breakthrough in our understanding of the strong interaction and is therefore in the focus of various high-energy heavy-ion research programs. The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at FAIR will play a unique role in the exploration of the QCD phase diagram in the region of high net-baryon densities, because it is designed to run at unprecedented interaction rates. High-rate operation is the key prerequisite for high-precision measurements of multi-differential observables and of rare diagnostic probes which are sensitive to the dense phase of the nuclear fireball. The goal of the CBM experiment at SIS100 (sqrt(s_NN) = 2.7 - 4.9 GeV) is to discover fundamental properties of QCD matter: the phase structure at large baryon-chemical potentials (mu_B > 500 MeV), effects of chiral symmetry, and the equation-of-state at high density as it is expected to occur in the core of neutron stars. Abstract

Sheep may not receive enough nutrition by grazing poor pastures, particularly during the dry season. Supplementing concentrated feed may be a useful approach to maximize rumen microbial activity by providing a balanced amount of energy and protein. An experiment was carried out to optimize the supplementation of concentrate feed for native coastal sheep in southwest Bangladesh. Five treatment groups consisting of twenty female sheep each were randomly assigned to receive five different degrees of concentrate feed. A randomized complete block design (RCBD) was the basis for the experimental setup. The five treatment groups were assigned a concentrate mix of 0, 100, 150, 200, and 250 g sheep-1 day-1, respectively. The energy and crude protein content of the concentrate mixture were 12.00 MJ and 219.0g kg DM-1. Every day, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., all groups of sheep were permitted to graze for ten hours. Before allowing them to concentrate feeding and grazing, empty body weight measurements were recorded every two weeks. Body weight of sheep fed different levels of concentrate was similar (p>0.05). The growth rate varied significantly among different concentrate supplemented group only at week 10 (p=0.029) and at week 14 (p=0.013) however, at other cases the growth rate was statistically similar (p>0.05). This implies that the nutrient intake from grazing was likely sufficient for maintaining similar growth across groups outside the weights at week 10 and 14. In summary, the absence of a significant variation in weight gain despite higher concentrate feed supplementation likely reflects the complex interplay of biological, genetic, and environmental factors that regulate weight gain. Abstract

We explore the scenario where the core of a neutron star (having experienced a transition to an up and down quark phase) shrinks into the equilibrated quark object after reaching strange quark matter saturation density (where a composition of up, down and strange quarks is the favored state of matter). The overlaying (envelope) material free-falls following the core contraction releasing upto 10^{53} {\rm ergs} in energy as radiation, partly as a result of the conversion of envelope material to quarks. This phenomena, we named Quark-Nova, leads to a wide variety of ejectae ranging form the Newtonian, "dirty" to the ultra-relativistic fireball. The mass range of the corresponding compact remnant (the quark star) ranges from less than 0.3M_{\odot} up to a solar mass. Abstract

We compute numerical models of uniformly rotating strange stars (SS) in general relativity for the recently proposed QCD-based equation of state (EOS) of strange quark matter (Dey et al. 1998). Static models based on this EOS are characterised by a larger surface redshift than strange stars within the MIT bag model. The frequencies of the fastest rotating configurations described by Dey model are much higher than these for neutron stars (NS) and for the simplest SS MIT bag model. We determine a number of physical parameters for such stars and compare them with those obtained for NS. We construct constant baryon mass equilibrium sequences both normal and supramassive. Similarly to the NS a supramassive SS, prior to collapse to a black hole, spins up as it loses angular momentum. We find the upper limits on maximal masses and maximal frequencies of the rotating configurations. We show that the maximal rotating frequency for each of considered evolutionary sequences is never the Keplerian one. A normal and low mass supramassive strange stars gaining angular momentum always slows down just before reaching the Keplerian limit. For a high mass supramassive SS sequence the Keplerian configuration is the one with the lowest rotational frequency in the sequence. The value of $T/W$ for rapidly rotating SS of any mass is significantly higher than those for ordinary NS. For Keplerian configurations it increases as mass decreases. 21. Entropy & equation of state (EOS) for hot bare strange stars

Abstract

Compactness of some stars is explained if they are strange stars (SS) as shown by Dey et al. (1998) (D98) and Li et al. (1999a). One of these compact star candidates is the SAX J1808.4-3658 (SAX in short) believed to be an important link in the genesis of radio pulsars. SS have also been suggested for bursting X-ray pulsars (GRO J1744-28, Cheng et al. 1998), from quasi-periodic oscillations (QPO) of X-ray binaries (4U 1728-34, Li et al. 1999b) and from peculiarity of properties of radio pulsars (PSR 0943+10, Xu et al.1999; Kapoor et al. 2000). We now extend the calculation to include high temperatures upto T = 70 MeV ~ 8 times 10^{11} ^oK and find that the nature of the mass (M) and radius (R), derived from astrophysical data, is still retained. The entropy is calculated and matches onto that calculated from hadronic models thus supporting the idea that the quark-hadron transition may be continuous., Comment: 4 pages, including 4 figures

Abstract

Objectives To develop EULAR recommendations for screening and prophylaxis of chronic and opportunistic infections in patients with autoimmune inflammatory rheumatic diseases (AIIRD). Methods An international Task Force (TF) (22 members/15 countries) formulated recommendations, supported by systematic literature review findings. Level of evidence and grade of recommendation were assigned for each recommendation. Level of agreement was provided anonymously by each TF member. Results Four overarching principles (OAP) and eight recommendations were developed. The OAPs highlight the need for infections to be discussed with patients and with other medical specialties, in accordance with national regulations. In addition to biologic/targeted synthetic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) for which screening for latent tuberculosis (TB) should be performed, screening could be considered also before conventional synthetic DMARDs, glucocorticoids and immunosuppressants. Interferon gamma release assay should be preferred over tuberculin skin test, where available. Hepatitis B (HBV) antiviral treatment should be guided by HBV status defined prior to starting antirheumatic drugs. All patients positive for hepatitis-C-RNA should be referred for antiviral treatment. Also, patients who are non-immune to varicella zoster virus should be informed about the availability of postexposure prophylaxis should they have contact with this pathogen. Prophylaxis against Pneumocystis jirovecii seems to be beneficial in patients treated with daily doses >15-30 mg of prednisolone or equivalent for >2-4 weeks. Conclusions These recommendations provide guidance on the screening and prevention of chronic and opportunistic infections. Abstract

Background: Comorbidities have a profound impact on the QoL of patients living with autoimmune rheumatic diseases (AIRDs). Unfortunately, global data on the burden of comorbidities and its impact on health outcomes in this vulnerable group is scarce. Objectives: We studied the prevalence, distribution and clustering of comorbidities and multimorbidity among patients with AIRDs and healthy controls (HCs) and its impact on health outcomes, utilizing data from the ongoing 2nd COVAD study. Methods: The COVAD study is a global e-survey that embodies patient voice while empowering collaborators and young researchers. The study group of 157 physicians across 106 countries from February-June 2022 captured details of AIRDs, autoimmune and non-autoimmune comorbidities, and validated patient reported outcomes. Human Development Index (UNDP 2021-22) of country of residence was taken as a surrogate marker for socioeconomic status (SES). Basic multimorbidity (BM), Complex multimorbidity (CM), Autoimmune multimorbidity (AM) are defined as the co-occurrence of ≥2 non-rheumatic comorbidities, ≥3 non-rheumatic chronic conditions affecting ≥3 different organ systems [1] and ≥3 autoimmune diseases (AIDs) in an individual respectively. PROMIS global physical health (PGP), mental health (PGM), fatigue 4a (F4a) and physical function short form (SF10) scores were calculated for the different groups and compared using descriptive statistics, linear regression and cluster analysis (hierarchical followed by K means). Results: Of 17,612 total respondents, 6149 (62.7%) had underlying AIRDs and 3652 (37.3%) were HCs, with female (80.8%) and Caucasian (53.9%) predominance in the former. All types of multimorbidity were more frequent in AIRDs than HCs, including any comorbidity (77.1% versus 25.0%; OR: 2.9; 2.7-3.2), BM (21.0% vs 6.2%; 4.0; 3.4-4.6), and CM (3.1% vs 0.5%; 6.4; 3.9-10.4), and with prevalence increasing with age (p<0.001) (Figure 1A, B). Background. The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted on the global surgery landscape.Objectives. To analyse and describe the initial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on orthopaedic surgery at Groote Schuur Hospital, a tertiary academic hospital in South Africa.Methods. The number of orthopaedic surgical cases, emergency theatre patient waiting times, and numbers of outpatient clinic visits, ward admissions, bed occupancies and total inpatient days for January - April 2019 (pre-COVID-19) were compared with the same time frame in 2020 (COVID-19). The COVID-19 timeframe included initiation of a national ‘hard lockdown’ from 26 March 2020, in preparation for an increasing volume of COVID-19 cases.Results. April 2020, the time of the imposed hard lockdown, was the most affected month, although the number of surgical cases had started to decrease slowly during the 3 preceding months. Abstract

Objective Serious infection remains a concern when prescribing immune-modulatory drugs for immune-mediated inflammatory diseases. The 'summary of product characteristics' (SmPCs) provide information on adverse events for example, infections, from clinical trials and postmarketing pharmacovigilance. This review aimed to compare infection frequency, site and type across immune-modulatory drugs, reported in SmPCs. Methods The Electronic Medicines Compendium was searched for commonly prescribed immune-modulatory drugs used for: rheumatoid arthritis, spondyloarthritis, connective tissue disease, autoimmune vasculitis, autoinflammatory syndromes, inflammatory bowel disease, psoriasis, multiple sclerosis and/or other rarer conditions. Information was extracted on infection frequency, site and organisms. Frequency was recorded as per the SmPCs: very common (≥1/10); common (≥1/100 to<1/10); uncommon (≥1/1,000 to<1/100); rare (≥1/10,000 to<1/1,000); very rare (<1/10 000). Results 39 drugs were included, across 20 indications: 9 conventional synthetic disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (csDMARDs), 6 targeted synthetic DMARDs, 24 biologic (b)DMARDs. Twelve infection sites were recorded. Minimal/no site information was available for most csDMARDs, certolizumab pegol and rituximab. Upper respiratory tract was the most common site, especially with bDMARDs. Lower respiratory, ear/nose/throat and urinary tract infections were moderately common, with clustering within drug groups. Data for 27 pathogens were recorded, majority viruses, with herpes simplex and zoster and influenza most frequent. Variable/absent reporting was noted for opportunistic and certain high-prevalence infections for example, Epstein-Barr. Conclusion Our findings show differences between drugs and can aid treatment decisions alongside real-world safety data. Abstract

The sorption study of long lived 94Nb isotope on magnetite was carried out in the pH range of 1–10, both in aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The present study is focused to understand the mechanism behind the sorption and to predict the role of magnetite in retarding the migration of the radionuclide. The sorption mechanism and the role of Fe(II) site of magnetite were investigated using solvent extraction, cyclic voltammetry, X-ray photoelectron and absorption spectroscopy. Insignificant difference in the sorption pattern and percentage sorption under aerobic and anaerobic conditions suggests similar sorption mechanism in both conditions. The oxidation states of Nb and Fe of magnetite remained unchanged after sorption process. In acidic medium, the sorption mainly occurs via ion exchange whereas in neutral/basic medium via covalent bond formation of Nb with magnetite. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
