We introduce the extremal range, a local statistic for studying the spatial extent of extreme events in random fields on $\mathbb{R}^d$. Conditioned on exceedance of a high threshold at a location $s$, the extremal range at $s$ is the random variable defined as the smallest distance from $s\in\mathbb{R}^d$ to a location where there is a nonexceedance. We leverage tools from excursion-set theory, such as Lipschitz- Killing curvatures, to express distributional properties of the extremal range, including asymptotics for small distances and high thresholds. The extremal range captures the rate at which the spatial extent of conditional extreme events scales for increasingly high thresholds, and we relate its distributional properties with the well-known bivariate tail dependence coefficient and the extremal index of time series in Extreme-Value Theory. We calculate theoretical extremal-range properties for commonly used models, such as Gaussian or regularly varying random fields. We prove the Central Limit Theorem for the Euler-Poincar\'e characteristic of Berry's random wave model in a growing domain. We also show Gaussian fluctuations for a class of Berry's mixture models that correspond to a perturbation of the initial random field. Finally, some statistical applications, explicit calculations of the variance of the perturbed Berry's model and numerical investigations are provided to support our theoretical results.

The task of simplifying the complex spatio-temporal variables associated with climate modeling is of utmost importance and comes with significant challenges. In this research, our primary objective is to tailor clustering techniques to handle compound extreme events within gridded climate data across Europe. Specifically, we intend to identify subregions that display asymptotic independence concerning compound precipitation and wind speed extremes. To achieve this, we utilise daily precipitation sums and daily maximum wind speed data derived from the ERA5 reanalysis dataset spanning from 1979 to 2022. Our approach hinges on a tuning parameter and the application of a divergence measure to spotlight disparities in extremal dependence structures without relying on specific parametric assumptions. We propose a data-driven approach to determine the tuning parameter. This enables us to generate clusters that are spatially concentrated, which can provide more insightful information about the regional distribution of compound precipitation and wind speed extremes. In the process, we aim to elucidate the respective roles of extreme precipitation and wind speed in the resulting clusters. We leverage tools from excursion-set theory to study distributional properties of the extremal range, propose parametric models and predict the median extremal range at extreme threshold levels. The extremal range captures the rate at which the spatial extent of conditional extreme events scales for increasingly high thresholds, and we relate its distributional properties with the bivariate tail dependence coefficient and the extremal index of time series in classical Extreme-Value Theory. Consistent estimation of the distribution function of the extremal range for stationary random fields is proven. For non-stationary random fields, we implement generalized additive median regression to predict extremal-range maps at very high threshold levels. An application to two large daily temperature datasets, namely reanalyses and climate-model simulations for France, highlights decreasing extremal dependence for increasing threshold levels and reveals strong differences in joint tail decay rates between reanalyses and simulations., Comment: 32 pages, 5 figures

We are interested in creating statistical methods to provide informative summaries of random fields through the geometry of their excursion sets. To this end, we introduce an estimator for the length of the perimeter of excursion sets of random fields on $\mathbb{R}^2$ observed over regular square tilings. The proposed estimator acts on the empirically accessible binary digital images of the excursion regions and computes the length of a piecewise linear approximation of the excursion boundary. The estimator is shown to be consistent as the pixel size decreases, without the need of any normalization constant, and with neither assumption of Gaussianity nor isotropy imposed on the underlying random field. In this general framework, even when the domain grows to cover $\mathbb{R}^2$, the estimation error is shown to be of smaller order than the side length of the domain. For affine, strongly mixing random fields, this translates to a multivariate Central Limit Theorem for our estimator when multiple levels are considered simultaneously. Finally, we conduct several numerical studies to investigate statistical properties of the proposed estimator in the finite-sample data setting., Comment: 35 pages, 17 figures

The present article is devoted to the semi-parametric estimation of multivariate expectiles for extreme levels. The considered multivariate risk measures also include the possible conditioning with respect to a functional covariate, belonging to an infinite-dimensional space. By using the first order optimality condition, we interpret these expectiles as solutions of a multidimensional nonlinear optimum problem. Then the inference is based on a minimization algorithm of gradient descent type, coupled with consistent kernel estimations of our key statistical quantities such as conditional quantiles, conditional tail index and conditional tail dependence functions. The method is valid for equivalently heavy-tailed marginals and under a multivariate regular variation condition on the underlying unknown random vector with arbitrary dependence structure. Our main result establishes the consistency in probability of the optimum approximated solution vectors with a speed rate. This allows us to estimate the global computational cost of the whole procedure according to the data sample size., Comment: 21 pages

We propose a new class of models for variable clustering called Asymptotic Independent block (AI-block) models, which defines population-level clusters based on the independence of the maxima of a multivariate stationary mixing random process among clusters. This class of models is identifiable, meaning that there exists a maximal element with a partial order between partitions, allowing for statistical inference. We also present an algorithm depending on a tuning parameter that recovers the clusters of variables without specifying the number of clusters \emph{a priori}. Our work provides some theoretical insights into the consistency of our algorithm, demonstrating that under certain conditions it can effectively identify clusters in the data with a computational complexity that is polynomial in the dimension. A data-driven selection method for the tuning parameter is also proposed. To further illustrate the significance of our work, we applied our method to neuroscience and environmental real-datasets. The excursion set of a $C^2$ smooth random field carries relevant information in its various geometric measures. From a computational viewpoint, one never has access to the continuous observation of the excursion set, but rather to observations at discrete points in space. It has been reported that for specific regular lattices of points in dimensions 2 and 3, the usual estimate of the surface area of the excursions remains biased even when the lattice becomes dense in the domain of observation. In the present work, under the key assumptions of stationarity and isotropy, we demonstrate that this limiting bias is invariant to the locations of the observation points. Indeed, we identify an explicit formula for the bias, showing that it only depends on the spatial dimension $d$. This enables us to define an unbiased estimator for the surface area of excursion sets that are approximated by general tessellations of polytopes in $\mathbb{R}^d$, including Poisson-Voronoi tessellations. The modeling of dependence between maxima is an important subject in several applications in risk analysis. To this aim, the extreme value copula function, characterised via the madogram, can be used as a margin-free description of the dependence structure. From a practical point of view, the family of extreme value distributions is very rich and arise naturally as the limiting distribution of properly normalised component-wise maxima. In this paper, we investigate the nonparametric estimation of the madogram where data are completely missing at random. We provide the functional central limit theorem for the considered multivariate madrogram correctly normalized, towards a tight Gaussian process for which the covariance function depends on the probabilities of missing. We investigate Lipschitz-Killing curvatures for excursion sets of random fields on $\mathbb R^2$ under small spatial-invariant random perturbations. An expansion formula for mean curvatures is derived when the magnitude of the perturbation vanishes, which recovers the Gaussian Kinematic Formula at the limit by contiguity of the model. We develop an asymptotic study of the perturbed excursion area behaviour that leads to a quantitative non-Gaussian limit theorem, in Wasserstein distance, for fixed small perturbations and growing domain. When letting both the perturbation vanish and the domain grow, a standard Central Limit Theorem follows. Taking advantage of these results, we propose an estimator for the perturbation which turns out to be asymptotically normal and unbiased, allowing to make inference through sparse information on the field.

In multivariate extreme value theory (MEVT), the focus is on analysis outside of the observable sampling zone, which implies that the region of interest is associated to high risk levels. This work provides tools to include directional notions into the MEVT, giving the opportunity to characterize the recently introduced directional multivariate quantiles (DMQ) at high levels. Then, an out-sample estimation method for these quantiles is given. A bootstrap procedure carries out the estimation of the tuning parameter in this multivariate framework and helps with the estimation of the DMQ. Asymptotic normality for the proposed estimator is provided and the methodology is illustrated with simulated data-sets. Finally, a real-life application to a financial case is also performed.
