Abstract This study introduces StreetTalk, an original qualitative research methodology inspired by social media influencers, to investigate perceptions and experiences of energy insecurity among New York City (NYC) residents. Briefly, energy insecurity is defined as difficulty meeting household energy needs due to affordability, housing quality, outages and coping strategies. This present study employs dynamic short-form interviews with 34 participants from all five NYC boroughs of diverse economic, and racial/ethnic backgrounds. Thematic analysis of video-recorded interviews revealed six major energy insecurity-related categories: (1) conservation and trade-offs, (2) physical inefficiencies, (3) thermal agency, (4) response to the bill, (5) disappointment and distrust in energy-related authorities, and (6) desire for and barriers to clean energy adoption. These themes provide insight into NYC residents’ experiences with energy insecurity and are consistent with prior research. Beyond new scholarly insights, this study introduces StreetTalk, an innovative qualitative research methodology emphasizing rapid data collection and dissemination through social media platforms, including TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube (@hotandcold_nyc). Taking advantage of modern technology and modes of communication, the research team was able to effectively break down barriers to academic research consumption as the videos achieved substantial engagement, with almost 200,000 views and impressions within the first year of launching this novel street-based data collection and social media dissemination campaign.

Abstract Introduction Type 2 diabetes is a major public health issue in Mexico due to its high prevalence and its projection for the coming years for this disease. Findings on multidisciplinary care related to chronic diseases have proven effective, based on measurement of patient-centered outcomes, The Center of Comprehensive Care for Patients with Diabetes (CAIPaDi) is a multidisciplinary program focused on reducing diabetes complications. This case study aims to illustrate the results of implementing health outcomes measurements and demonstrate the beneficial effects of establishing a comprehensive model of care through a patient-centered approach. Methods A descriptive analysis of the comprehensive care indicators of patients with type 2 diabetes treated in the CAIPaDi program between 2013 and 2023 was conducted. The results were structured according to the standard set of outcomes for diabetes proposed by the International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurements (ICHOM). Results The baseline and prospective registration of consultations was completed for five years, complying with 25 of the 26 indicators of the ICHOM set. Este artículo tiene una doble finalidad, por un lado, analizar los rasgos editoriales de los primeros números de la Revista Hispano-Americana (1895-1896) de Laura Méndez de Cuenca, a partir de su configuración material y política; y, por el otro, reflexionar sobre la cultura visual de finales del siglo XIX en una empresa editorial de carácter publicitario en materia política y mercantil, en la que las reflexiones estéticas, artísticas y literarias están abocadas a la construcción de la imagen comercial de una región: México y Centroamérica. Las tecnologías de la mirada utilizadas en esta revista sirven a la vez como autopromoción y como plataformas de domesticación moderna de los comportamientos políticos, de los cuerpos y de la naturaleza, bajo la declarada intención de crear una óptica de valor liberal sobre la “realidad” hispanoamericana, con el fin de atraer inversionistas que desarrollaran y civilizaran por medio de la explotación de los recursos humanos y naturales.

Abstract Background Climate change has been identified as one of the biggest threats to human health. Despite this claim, there are no standardized tools that assess the rigor of published literature for use in weight of evidence (WOE) reviews. Standardized assessment tools are essential for creating clear and comparable WOE reviews. As such, we developed a standardized tool for evaluating the quality of climate change and health studies focused on evaluating studies that quantify exposure-response relationships and studies that implement and/or evaluate adaptation interventions. Methods The authors explored systematic-review methodology to enhance transparency and increase efficiency in summarizing and synthesizing findings from studies on climate change and health research. The authors adapted and extended existing WOE methods to develop the CHANGE (Climate Health ANalysis Grading Evaluation) tool. The resulting assessment tool has been refined through application and subsequent team input. Results The CHANGE tool is a two-step standardized tool for systematic review of climate change and health studies of exposure-response relationships and adaptation intervention studies. Step one of the CHANGE tool aims to classify studies included in weight-of-evidence reviews and step two assesses the quality and presence of bias in the climate change and health studies. Conclusion The application of the CHANGE tool in WOE reviews of climate change and health will lead to increased comparability, objectivity, and transparency within this research area.

The cochineal insect Dactylopius coccus Costa (Hemiptera) has cultural and economic value because it produces carminic acid that is used commercially. In this study, distinct fungi were cultured from dissected tissue and identified as Penicillium, Coniochaeta, Arthrinium, Cladosporium, Microascus, Aspergillus, and Periconia. Fungi were microscopically observed inside cochineals in the gut, fat body, and ovaries. Since cochineals spend their lives attached to cactus leaves and use the sap as feed, they can obtain fungi from cacti plants. Indeed, we obtained Penicillium, Aspergillus, and Cladosporium fungi from cacti that were identical to those inside cochineals, supporting their plant origin. Fungi could be responsible for the degrading activities in the insect guts, since cellulase, pectinase, and amylase enzymatic activities in insect guts decreased in fungicide-treated cochineals. Our findings set the basis for the further study of the interactions between insects, fungi, and their host plants.

Low- and moderate-income (LMI) households face substantial barriers in accessing solar energy despite incentives at the local, state, and federal levels. Notwithstanding the rapid deployment of resources, there is still much to understand and address from a program design and implementation perspective to effectively realize an equitable energy transition. This qualitative study, which draws on interviews with policymakers, implementers, and LMI homeowners, provides novel insights into barriers and facilitators surrounding the inclusive adoption of solar energy. Our findings underscore the substantial differences and frequent misalignments in perspectives among these stakeholders. We find that both implementers and LMI homeowners encounter economic and administrative burdens, though the specific ways these factors hinder solar adoption differ between the groups. We leverage the viewpoints and experiences of policymakers, implementers, and LMI homeowners to guide evidence-based recommendations to overcome the many hurdles that actively impede equitable and inclusive solar adoption.

Abstract Background Approximately 15% of adult GIST patients harbor tumors that are wild-type for KIT and PDGFRα genes (KP-wtGIST). These tumors usually have SDH deficiencies, exhibit a more indolent behavior and are resistant to imatinib. Underlying oncogenic mechanisms in KP-wtGIST include overexpression of HIF1α high IGFR signaling through the MAPK pathway or BRAF activating mutation, among others. As regorafenib inhibits these signaling pathways, it was hypothesized that it could be more active as upfront therapy in advanced KP-wtGIST. Methods Adult patients with advanced KP-wtGIST after central confirmation by NGS, naïve of systemic treatment for advanced disease, were included in this international phase II trial. Eligible patients received regorafenib 160 mg per day for 21 days every 28 days. The primary endpoint was disease control rate (DCR), according to RECIST 1.1 at 12 weeks by central radiological assessment. Results From May 2016 to October 2020, 30 patients were identified as KP-wtGIST by Sanger sequencing and 16 were confirmed by central molecular screening with NGS. Finally, 15 were enrolled and received regorafenib. The study was prematurely closed due to the low accrual worsened by COVID outbreak. The DCR at 12 weeks was 86.7% by central assessment. A subset of 60% experienced some tumor shrinkage, with partial responses and stabilization observed in 13% and 87% respectively, by central assessment. SDH-deficient GIST showed better clinical outcome than other KP-wtGIST. Conclusions Regorafenib activity in KP-wtGIST compares favorably with other tyrosine kinase inhibitors, especially in the SDH-deficient GIST subset and it should be taken into consideration as upfront therapy of advanced KP-wtGIST. Abstract Background Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is the most common auditory deficit in older adults and may lead to quality-of-life deterioration. However, few studies have been performed in low/middle-income countries, particularly in Latin America. This study aimed to assess the audiological benefit, quality of life, and factors associated with functional gain in elderly hearing aid users in the Fundación Santa Fe de Bogotá and UNIMEQ-ORL, two otology referral centers in Colombia. Design Pre-post study that included hearing aid users at the otology consult of the Fundación Santa Fe de Bogotá and UNIMEQ-ORL between June 2017 and December 2020. Glasgow Benefit Inventory (GBI) and Abbreviated Profile of Hearing Aid Benefit (APHAB) questionnaires were applied. Audiometric (0,5 kHz to 4 kHz) and speech audiometry results were collected. Results A total of 75 participants (132 ears) were included. The mean age was 70.73 years (SD: 12.66). The median hearing aid use in years was 0.71 (IQR: 0.64–0.90). Abstract Background The COVID-19 pandemic led to worldwide health service disruptions, due mainly to insufficient staff availability. To gain insight into policy responses and engage with policy-makers, the World Health Organization (WHO) developed a global approach to assess and measure the impact of COVID-19 on the health workforce. As part of this, WHO, together with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), supported an impact analysis of COVID-19 on health workers and policy responses, through country case studies in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). Methods We sought to identify lessons learned from policies on human resources for health (HRH) during health emergencies, to improve HRH readiness. First, we performed a rapid literature review for information-gathering. Second, we used the WHO interim guidance and impact measurement framework for COVID-19 and HRH to systematically organize that information. Finally, we used the Health Labour Market Framework to guide the content analysis on COVID-19 response in eight LAC countries and identify lessons learned to improve HRH readiness. Results Planning and implementing the COVID-19 response required strengthening HRH governance and HRH data and information systems. The results suggest two main aspects for HRH governance crucial to enabling an agile response: (1) aligning objectives among ministries to define and produce regulation and policy actions; and (2) agreeing on the strategy for HRH management between the public and private sectors, and between central and local governments. We identified three areas for improvement: (a) HRH information systems; (b) methodologies to estimate HRH needs; and (c) teams to analyse information for decision-making. Three key actions were identified during countries monitored, reviewed, and updated their response stages: (i) strengthening response through primary health care; (ii); planning HRH needs to implement the vaccination plan; and (iii) securing long-term HRH availability. Conclusion Countries coordinated and articulated with different stakeholders to align objectives, allocate resources, and agree on policy actions to implement the COVID-19 response. Data and information for HRH preparedness and implementation were key in enabling an agile COVID-19 response and are key areas to explore for improved pandemic preparedness.

Prior to 2020, little was known about how energy insecurity varies across U.S. states. The recent release of energy insecurity data from the Energy Information Administration facilitates the exploration of energy insecurity at the state level using the Residential Energy Consumption Survey. In this visualization, the authors use choropleth maps to show spatial variation in (1) forgoing basic necessities such as food or medicine to pay an energy bill and (2) keeping the home at an unhealthy temperature. Both are strategies used by households to prevent energy insecurity. The visualization highlights the state-level prevalence of each indicator.

Abstract Background Older People Living with HIV (OPWH) combine both aging and HIV-infection features, resulting in ageism, stigma, social isolation, and low quality of life. This context brings up new challenges for healthcare professionals, who now must aid patients with a significant comorbidity burden and polypharmacy treatments. OPWH opinion on their health management is hardly ever considered as a variable to study, though it would help to understand their needs on dissimilar settings. Methods We performed a cross-sectional, comparative study including patients living with HIV aged ≥50 years old from multiple centers worldwide and gave them a survey addressing their perception on overall health issues, psychological problems, social activities, geriatric conditions, and opinions on healthcare. Data was analyzed through Chisquared tests sorting by geographical regions, age groups, or both. Results We organized 680 participants data by location (Center and South America [CSA], Western Europe [WE], Africa, Eastern Europe and Israel [EEI]) and by age groups (50- 55, 56-65, 66-75, >75). In EEI, HIV serostatus socializing and reaching undetectable viral load were the main problems. CSA participants are the least satisfied regarding their healthcare, and a great part of them are not retired. Africans show the best health perception, have financial problems, and fancy their HIV doctors. WE is the most developed region studied and their participants report the best scores. Moreover, older age groups tend to live alone, have a lower perception of psychological problems, and reduced social life. Conclusions Patients’ opinions outline region- and age-specific unmet needs. In EEI, socializing HIV and reaching undetectable viral load were the main concerns. CSA low satisfaction outcomes might reflect high expectations or profound inequities in the region. African participants results mirror a system where general health is hard to achieve, but HIV clinics are much more appealing to them. WE is the most satisfied region about their healthcare. In this context, age-specific information, education and counseling programs (i.e. Patient Reported Outcomes, Patient Centered Care, multidisciplinary teams) are needed to promote physical and mental health among older adults living with HIV/AIDS. This is crucial for improving health-related quality of life and patient’s satisfaction.

ObjectiveTo examine racial and ethnic self-identification among adolescents and explore psychosocial outcomes and peer treatment for multiracial adolescents in the United States.MethodsData are from the 2014 Child Development Supplement, a subsample of the Panel Study of Income Dynamics. Data were weighted to be nationally representative. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the population and to explore family and parent demographics. Multivariable regressions tested for differences in psychosocial outcomes and peer treatment and group behaviors for multiracial youth in comparison to their single race peers.ResultsBlack multiracial youth had significantly lower scores on the children's depression index compared to single race Black youth, and White multiracial youth reported significantly higher rates of peer mistreatment in comparison to White single race youth. Black multiracial and White multiracial adolescents reported similar positive and negative peer group behaviors.ConclusionsComplex patterns emerge when examining the psychosocial and peer treatment variables presented in this analysis for multiracial adolescents and their single-race peers. The findings regarding depressive symptoms and peer bullying point to signs of different relationships between multiracial groups. White multiracial adolescents report worse outcomes than their White single-race peers, but Black multiracial adolescents reporting better outcomes than their Black single-race peers.

Introducción: La dermatoporosis es un síndrome crónico de fragilidad cutánea, caracterizado por atrofia, púrpura y pseudocicatrices en piel. Objetivo: Determinar los factores asociados a dermatoporosis en una muestra de sujetos ≥ 60 años. Métodos: Estudio observacional, transversal, descriptivo y analítico de sujetos ≥ 60 años a quienes se realizó historia clínica, exploración física y aplicación de un autocuestionario diagnóstico de dermatoporosis. Para determinar los factores asociados se realizó análisis de regresión logística multivariado. Resultados: En 315 sujetos, la prevalencia de dermatoporosis fue de 29 %; 70 % fue del sexo femenino. Los factores asociados fueron edad > 75 años (p = 0.001), exposición solar prolongada (p = 0.002), ingesta de anticoagulantes/antiplaquetarios (p = 0.004), esteroides orales (p = 0.03) y enfermedad renal crónica (p = 0.03); así como, edad materna > 40 años en el último parto (p = 0.02), lactancia > 7 meses por embarazo y lactancia acumulada > 18 meses (p = 0.01). Se relacionaron con su ausencia, edad < 20 años en el primer embarazo y menopausia después de los 45 años. La correlación entre la autovaloración y el diagnóstico clínico fue muy alta (0.95, p < 0.001). Conclusiones: Los factores de riesgo asociados a dermatoporosis fueron similares a los previamente reportados.

La estética, un neologismo documentado en la filosofía alemana del siglo XVIII, se introdujo en el ámbito hispanohablante a mediados del siglo XIX por medio de traducciones francesas publicadas en la prensa liberal española. El propósito de este artículo es intentar contestar qué se entendió inicialmente en México por estética, cuáles fueron sus antecedentes conceptuales y en qué campos disciplinares comenzó a desarrollarse. Si bien es posible advertirla en la prensa periódica y en algunos programas de estudio, la estética adquiere carácter programático en la Historia crítica de la poesía en México (1892) de Francisco Pimentel, posiblemente el único trabajo que aborda la literatura como cuestión estética en el México decimonónico. En este artículo se analizará esta obra como un intento de implementación de la estética bajo la noción de “ciencia literaria”, al servicio de la conformación de una “literatura nacional”.

Background The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on paediatric populations varied between high-income countries (HICs) versus low-income to middle-income countries (LMICs). We sought to investigate differences in paediatric clinical outcomes and identify factors contributing to disparity between countries.Methods The International Severe Acute Respiratory and Emerging Infections Consortium (ISARIC) COVID-19 database was queried to include children under 19 years of age admitted to hospital from January 2020 to April 2021 with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis. Univariate and multivariable analysis of contributing factors for mortality were assessed by country group (HICs vs LMICs) as defined by the World Bank criteria.Results A total of 12 860 children (3819 from 21 HICs and 9041 from 15 LMICs) participated in this study. Of these, 8961 were laboratory-confirmed and 3899 suspected COVID-19 cases. About 52% of LMICs children were black, and more than 40% were infants and adolescent. Overall in-hospital mortality rate (95% CI) was 3.3% [=(3.0% to 3.6%), higher in LMICs than HICs (4.0% (3.6% to 4.4%) and 1.7% (1.3% to 2.1%), respectively). There were significant differences between country income groups in intervention profile, with higher use of antibiotics, antivirals, corticosteroids, prone positioning, high flow nasal cannula, non-invasive and invasive mechanical ventilation in HICs. Out of the 439 mechanically ventilated children, mortality occurred in 106 (24.1%) subjects, which was higher in LMICs than HICs (89 (43.6%) vs 17 (7.2%) respectively). Pre-existing infectious comorbidities (tuberculosis and HIV) and some complications (bacterial pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome and myocarditis) were significantly higher in LMICs compared with HICs. On multivariable analysis, LMIC as country income group was associated with increased risk of mortality (adjusted HR 4.73 (3.16 to 7.10)).Conclusion Mortality and morbidities were higher in LMICs than HICs, and it may be attributable to differences in patient demographics, complications and access to supportive and treatment modalities.

Summary Health depends on the diet and a vegetal diet promotes health by providing fibres, vitamins and diverse metabolites. Remarkably, plants may also provide microbes. Fungi and bacteria that reside inside plant tissues (endophytes) seem better protected to survive digestion; thus, we investigated the reported evidence on the endophytic origin of some members of the gut microbiota in animals such as panda, koala, rabbits and tortoises and several herbivore insects. Data examined here showed that some members of the herbivore gut microbiota are common plant microbes, which derived to become stable microbiota in some cases. Endophytes may contribute to plant fibre or antimetabolite degradation and synthesis of metabolites with the plethora of enzymatic activities that they display; some may have practical applications, for example, Lactobacillus plantarum found in the intestinal tract, plants and in fermented food is used as a probiotic that may defend animals against bacterial and viral infections as other endophytic‐enteric bacteria do. Clostridium that is an endophyte and a gut bacterium has remarkable capabilities to degrade cellulose by having cellulosomes that may be considered the most efficient nanomachines. Cellulose degradation is a challenge in animal digestion and for biofuel production. Other endophytic‐enteric bacteria may have cellulases, pectinases, xylanases, tannases, proteases, nitrogenases and other enzymatic capabilities that may be attractive for biotechnological developments, indeed many endophytes are used to promote plant growth. Here, a cycle of endophytic‐enteric‐soil‐endophytic microbes is proposed which has relevance for health and comprises the fate of animal faeces as natural microbial inoculants for plants that constitute bacterial sources for animal guts.

The human body is a complex system maintained in homeostasis thanks to the interactions between multiple physiological regulation systems. When faced with physical or biological perturbations, this system must react by keeping a balance between adaptability and robustness. The SARS-COV-2 virus infection poses an immune system challenge that tests the organism’s homeostatic response. Notably, the elderly and men are particularly vulnerable to severe disease, poor outcomes, and death. Mexico seems to have more infected young men than anywhere else. The goal of this study is to determine the differences in the relationships that link physiological variables that characterize the elderly and men, and those that characterize fatal outcomes in young men. To accomplish this, we examined a database of patients with moderate to severe COVID-19 (471 men and 277 women) registered at the “Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición Salvador Zubirán” in March 2020. The sample was stratified by outcome, age, and sex. Physiological networks were built using 67 physiological variables (vital signs, anthropometric, hematic, biochemical, and tomographic variables) recorded upon hospital admission. Individual variables and system behavior were examined by descriptive statistics, differences between groups, principal component analysis, and network analysis. We show how topological network properties, particularly clustering coefficient, become disrupted in disease. Finally, anthropometric, metabolic, inflammatory, and pulmonary cluster interaction characterize the deceased young male group.

Introduction To assess the cost-effectiveness of a multidisciplinary and comprehensive innovative diabetes care program (CAIPaDi) versus usual treatment in public health institutions.Research design and methods Using a cost-effectiveness analysis, we compared the CAIPaDi program versus usual treatment given in Mexican public health institutions. The analysis was based on the IQVIA Core Diabetes Model, a validated simulation model used to estimate long-term clinical outcomes. Data were prospectively obtained from the CAIPaDi program and from public databases and published papers. Health outcomes were expressed in terms of life-years gained and quality-adjusted life years (QALYs). Health and economic outcomes were estimated from a public perspective and discounted at 5% per year over a 20-year horizon. Costs are reported in US dollars (US$) of 2019. A probabilistic sensitivity analysis was performed using life-years gained and QALYs.Results The CAIPaDi costs on average US$559 (95% CI: −$879 to −$239) less than the usual treatment (95% CI: −$879 to −$239) and produced a difference in mean life-years gained (0.48, 95% CI: 0.45 to 0.52) and mean QALYs (1.43, 95% CI: 1.40 to 1.46). The cost-effectiveness ratio resulted in a saving per life-year gained of −US$1155 (95% CI: −$1962 to −$460). Mean differences in QALYs resulted in a saving per QALY of −US$735 (95% CI: −$1193 to −$305). Probabilistic sensitivity analysis proved the results are robust on both life-years gained and QALYs.Conclusions CAIPaDi has a better cost-effectiveness ratio than the usual therapy in Mexican public health institutions.

Little literature exists about critically ill patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) from Latin America. Here, we aimed to describe the clinical characteristics and mortality risk factors in mechanically ventilated COVID-19 patients from Mexico. For this purpose, we recruited 67 consecutive mechanically ventilated COVID-19 patients which were grouped according to their clinical outcome (survival vs. death). Clinical risk factors for mortality were identified by machine-learning and logistic regression models. The median age of participants was 42 years and 65% were men. The most common comorbidity observed was obesity (49.2%). Fever was the most frequent symptom of illness (88%), followed by dyspnea (84%). Multilobe ground-glass opacities were observed in 76% of patients by thoracic computed tomography (CT) scan. Fifty-two percent of study participants were ventilated in prone position, and 59% required cardiovascular support with norepinephrine. Furthermore, 49% of participants were coinfected with a second pathogen. Two-thirds of COVID-19 patients developed acute kidney injury (AKIN). The mortality of our cohort was 44.7%. AKIN, uric acid, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and a longitudinal increase in the ventilatory ratio were associated with mortality. Baseline PaO2/FiO2 values and a longitudinal recovery of lymphocytes were protective factors against mortality. Our study provides reference data about the clinical phenotype and risk factors for mortality in mechanically ventilated Mexican patients with COVID-19.

Background: Crowd-sourced traffic data potentially allow prediction of traffic-related air pollution at high temporal and spatial resolution. Objectives: To examine associations (1) of radar-based traffic measurements with congestion colors displayed on crowd-sourced traffic data maps and (2) of black carbon (BC) levels with radar and crowd-sourced traffic data. Methods: At an off-ramp of an interstate and a small one-way street in a mixed-use area in New York City, we used radar devices to obtain vehicle speeds and flows (hourly counts) for cars and trucks. At these radar sites and at an additional non-radar equipped site at a 2-way street, we monitored BC levels using aethalometers in the summer and early fall of 2017. At all three sites, free-flow traffic conditions typically did not occur due to the nearby presence of traffic lights and forced turns. We also downloaded real-time traffic maps from a crowd-sourced traffic data provider and assigned an ordinal integer congestion color code CCC to the congestion colors, ranging from 1 (dark red) to 5 (gray). Results: CCC increased with vehicle speed. Traffic flow was highest for intermediate speeds and intermediate CCC. Regression analyses showed that BC levels increased with either segregated or total vehicle flows. At the off-ramp, time-dependent BC levels can be inferred from time-dependent CCC and radar-derived mean vehicle flow data. A unit decrease in CCC for a mean traffic flow of 100 vehicles/h was associated with a mean (95% CI) increase in BC levels of 0.023 (0.028, 0.018) μg/m3. At the small 1-way and the 2-way street, BC levels were also negatively associated with CCC, though at a >0.05 significance level. Conclusions: Use of inexpensive crowd-sourced traffic data holds great promise in air pollution modeling and health studies. Time-dependent traffic-related primary air pollution levels may be inferred from radar-calibrated crowd-sourced traffic data, in our case radar-derived mean traffic flow and widely available CCC data. However, at some locations mean traffic flow data may already be available.

The objective of this data article is to show by calorimetric curves and the immersion enthalpies the differences between the interactions that occur when two activated carbons of different textural and chemical properties are put in contact with C6 compounds (an aromatic and a closed chain aliphatic: benzene and cyclohexane, respectively) in their pure state, and subsequently in mixtures thereof, with different molar composition. The greatest interaction occurs with the activated carbon that has the lower content of oxygen groups on the surface, both for the pure solvents, as for the mixtures; As for wetting liquids, there is a greater interaction with benzene (−∆Him: 94.98–106.40 J g−1) than with cyclohexane (−∆Him: 21.23–65.97 J g−1). The immersion enthalpy values for the different molar fractions are between −36.51 and −79.69 J g−1 for the oxidized sample, and between −50.43 and −85.59 J g−1 for the sample without chemical modification.

We identified diverse bradyrhizobia having distinct ERIC-PCR genomic fingerprints from native American trees Inga vera and Lysiloma spp. In addition, two nodule isolates recovered from Lysiloma divaricatum seedlings inoculated with soil from the tropical house of a UK botanical garden were also identified as Bradyrhizobium. Genomes were obtained (with sizes around 9 Mb each) from nine Inga and Lysiloma bradyrhizobial isolates; plasmids were detected in two of the Inga strains analyzed. Average Nucleotide Identity of whole genomes revealed five novel Bradyrhizobium genomospecies from Mexican trees, while the UK isolates were identified as Bradyrhizobium cajani and Bradyrhizobium brasilense. Inga vera and Lysiloma isolates, despite their genetic distances and different hosts, shared a common set of nod genes that suggested that I. vera and Lysiloma bradyrhizobia produce fucosylated, methylated and carbamylated lipochitooligosaccharides. Uptake hydrogenase hup, hyp and secretion system genes were found in some of the isolates. Lysiloma strains were found to be ineffective on I. vera. Some of the isolates may be used as plant inoculants.

An action research project was carried out, using theater workshops and basic digital fabrication technology workshops to improve social skills—such as the expression of emotions, communication, self-control, and teamwork—in a group of 10 young individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This article focuses on the digital fabrication workshops, where participants worked on the fundamentals of electronics and programming, as well as 3D design and printing, to make props that were later used on stage in the theatrical performances in which they participated. These workshops were systematized through observation guides. According to the results, it was evident that the participants not only enjoyed and gained technological knowledge, but that their social skill development needs were addressed. Professionals from the Special Education Faculty and the Fab Lab Kä Träre, both from Universidad Estatal a Distancia in Costa Rica, were in charge of the study during its first phase, executed in 2016 and 2017.

The genus Weissella is composed of a group of Gram-positive facultative anaerobe bacteria with fermentative metabolism. Strains of this genus have been isolated from various ecological niches, including a wide variety of fermented cereal foods. The present study aimed to determine the relative abundance and fermentation capabilities of Weissella species isolated from pozol, a traditional maya product made of lime-cooked (nixtamalized) fermented maize. We sequenced the V3-V4 regions of 16S rDNA; Weissella was detected early in the fermentation process and reached its highest relative abundance (3.89%) after 3 h of culture. In addition, we evaluated five Weissella strains previously isolated from pozol but reported as non-amylolytic, to define alternative carbon sources such as xylan, xylooligosaccharides, and sucrose. While no growth was observed on birch xylan, growth did occur on xylooligosaccharides and sucrose. Strains WcL17 and WCP-3A were selected for genomic sequencing, as the former shows efficient growth on xylooligosaccharides and the latter displays high glycosyltransferase (GTF) activity. Genomes of both strains were assembled and recorded, with a total of 2.3 Mb in 30 contigs for WcL17 and 2.2 Mb in 45 contigs for WCP-3a. Both strains were taxonomically assigned to Weissella confusa and genomic analyses were performed to evaluate the gene products encoding active carbohydrate enzymes (CAZy). Both strains have the gene content needed to metabolize sucrose, hemicellulose, cellulose, and starch residues, all available in pozol. Our results suggest that the range of secondary enzymatic activity in Weissella confusa strains confer them with wide capabilities to participate in fermentative processes of natural products with heterogeneous carbon sources.

Objetivo. Recuperar y analizar la presencia de bacterias formadoras de biopelículas en las mangueras de la jeringa triple y de la pieza de mano que distribuyen el agua a las unidades dentales de la Fundación Universitaria San Martin. Método. Se realizó un estudio descriptivo de corte transversal con muestreo probabilístico. Se estudiaron las bacterias presentes en el agua recolectada en la jeringa triple y la pieza de mano, las cuales fueron seleccionadas al ser los instrumentos por los cuales transita el agua que entrará en contacto con el paciente. Se tomaron muestras antes y después de la consulta, de la jeringa triple con solo agua, con agua–aire y la pieza de mano. Se realizaron cultivos por filtración por membrana en medios Endo, Cetrimide y Sangre Azida. Resultados. Se encontraron 84 % de muestras positivas para cocos Gram positivos, mientras que el 8 % de las muestras presentaban aislamientos de bacilos Gram negativos, representado en E coli y P aeruginosa. La flora Gram positiva estuvo representada por Staphylococcus hominis y Staphylococcus epidermidis.

Household energy is increasingly vital for maintaining good health. Unaffordable and inadequate household energy presents adverse consequences that are amplified by poverty and a changing climate. To date, the connections between energy, socioeconomic disadvantage, and well-being are generally underappreciated, and household energy connection with climate change is under-researched. Building on the energy insecurity framework, this review explores literature related to household energy, poverty, and health in order to highlight the disproportionate burdens borne by vulnerable populations in adequately meeting household energy needs. This paper is based on a comprehensive review of books, peer-reviewed articles, and reports published between 1990 and 2019, identified via databases including JSTOR and PubMed. A total of 406 publications were selected as having potential for full review, 203 received full review, and 162 were included in this paper on the basis of set inclusion criteria. From the literature review, we created an original heuristic model that describes energy insecurity as either acute or chronic, and we further explore the mediators and pathways that link energy insecurity to health. In the discussion, we posit that the extant literature does not sufficiently consider that vulnerable communities often experience energy insecurity bundled with other hardships. We also discuss energy, poverty, and health through the lens of climate change, making the criticism that most research on household energy does not consider climate change. This evidence is important for enhancing research in this field and developing programmatic and policy interventions as they pertain to energy access, affordability, and health, with special emphasis on vulnerable populations, climate change, and social inequality.

El Parque Regional de las Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar es un humedal salino situado al norte de la restinga que cierra el Mar Menor (Región de Murcia). Forma parte de la Red Natura 2000, y está declarado Zona de Especial Conservación y Zona de Especial Protección para las Aves, además de ser un importante enclave de producción de sal y turístico. El objetivo de este trabajo es realizar una valoración preliminar de los servicios ecosistémicos del Parque Regional mediante la realización de encuestas pre-test a los usuarios del espacio protegido. Para ello se utilizaron métodos de preferencias declaradas: el método de Valoración Contingente y la Valoración por Experimentos de Elección. Se realizaron 262 encuestas pre-test a turistas entre agosto y diciembre de 2019, las cuáles orientaron la redacción de las encuestas finales. Además, se definieron los servicios ecosistémicos que ofrece el Parque Regional mediante el análisis de la Common International Classification of Ecosystem Services en su última versión V5.1, obteniendo 32 tipos de servicios ecosistémicos que serán valorados en las encuestas finales con cuatro opciones de respuesta.

Introducción: la mutación en el gen TP53 se ha asociado con la oncogénesis de los tumores de ovario tipo II. Se ha propuesto que las mutaciones de p53 se inician en las células de la trompa uterina y después migran al ovario. El objetivo de este estudio es establecer la frecuencia de la expresión de p53 en ovario y trompa uterina en carcinoma epitelial primario de ovario. Materiales y métodos: estudio de corte transversal en tumores primarios epiteliales de ovario. Se evaluó la expresión de p53 por inmunohistoquímica en el ovario y en las trompas uterinas. Resultados: se incluyeron 45 pacientes con edad media de 55 años. Se estudiaron 24 casos de carcinomas serosos, 6 endometrioides, 5 mixtos, 3 de células claras, 3 carcinosarcomas, 2 carcinomas mucinosos y 2 indiferenciados. Se observó positividad fuerte y difusa en 68% de los tumores tipo II. En 52% hubo positividad en trompa uterina y ovario, 92% con compromiso bilateral. En 3 de estos casos se reconoció carcinoma intraepitelial tubárico con positividad de p53 en el área tumoral, no tumoral y en el carcinoma seroso. Conclusión: como se ha observado en estudios previos, el gen TP53 está involucrado en la oncogénesis de los tumores tipo II y se ha demostrado que existe una relación entre una mutación inicial de p53, seguida por STIL, STIC, evolucionando a un carcinoma seroso de ovario.

The liquid-phase adsorption of toluene in cyclohexane and hexane solutions on modified activated carbons was evaluated; the energy involved in the interaction between these solutions and the solids was determined by immersion enthalpies of pure solvents and their mixtures, and the contribution of the system constituents was calculated by differential enthalpies. The thermal treatment generated modifications that favored adsorption and interaction with the evaluated solutions, since it increased the textural parameters and the basic character of the samples. Cyclohexane could create greater competition with the adsorption sites compared to hexane, but it favored the increase in adsorption capacities (0.416 to 1.026 mmol g−1) and the interactions with the solid evaluated through the immersion enthalpies. The immersion enthalpies of pure solvents (−16.36 to −112.7 J g−1) and mixtures (−25.65 to −104.34 J g−1) had exothermic behaviors that were decreasing due to the possible displacement of solvent molecules when increasing the solute concentration in the mixtures. The differential enthalpies for toluene were negative (−18.63 to −2.14 J), mainly due to the π–π interaction with the solid, while those of the solvent–solid component tended to be positive values (−4.25 to 55.97 J) due to the displacement of the solvent molecules by those of toluene.

In approximately 5% of unexpected deaths, establishing a conclusive diagnosis exclusively on the basis of anatomo-pathological findings in a classic autopsy is difficult. Postmortem biomarkers have been actively investigated as complementary indicators to help to reach valid conclusions about the circumstances of death. Several studies propose either the pericardial fluid or peripheral veins as a location for troponin determination, but the optimum sampling site is still a matter of debate. Our objective was to evaluate the association between the ratio of troponin values in the pericardial fluid and serum (determined postmortem) and the diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in the context of sudden cardiac death. We included 175 forensic cases. Two groups were established: AMI deaths (48; 27.4%) and the control group (127; 72.6%). The cardiac Troponin I (cTnI) values in the pericardial fluid and the troponin ratio were found to be associated with the cause of death. Univariate regression analyses showed that both age and the cTnI ratio were significantly associated with the diagnosis of AMI death. In a multivariate analysis, adjusting for confounding factors, the age and cTnI ratio were independent predictors of death from myocardial infarction. We performed a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve for the cTnI ratio for AMI death and selected a cut-off point. Our biomarker was found to be a valuable and highly effective tool for use in the forensic field as a complementary method to facilitate diagnosis in nonconclusive autopsies.

Drowning is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. The pathophysiology of drowning is complex and, sometimes, interpretation of the circumstances of death in the autopsy becomes the main source of information in its diagnosis. New advances in medical research, such as proteomics, especially in forensic pathology, are still in the development. We proposed to investigate the application of Mass Spectrometry-based technologies, to identify differentially expressed proteins that may act as potential biomarkers in the postmortem diagnosis of drowning. We performed a pilot proteomic experiment with the inclusion of two drowned and two control forensic cases. After applying restrictive parameters, we identified apolipoprotein A1 (ApoA1) and α-1 antitrypsin as differentially expressed between the two diagnostic groups. A validation experiment, with the determination of both proteins in 25 forensic cases (16 drowned and 9 controls) was performed, and we corroborated ApoA1 higher values in the drowning group, whereas α-1 antitrypsin showed lower levels. After adjusting by confounder factors, both remained as predictive independent factors for diagnosis of drowning (p = 0.010 and p = 0.022, respectively). We constructed ROC curves for biomarkers’ levels attending at the origin of death and established an ApoA1 cut-off point of 100 mg/dL. Correct classification based on the diagnosis criteria was reached for 73.9% of the cases in a discriminant analysis. We propose apolipoprotein A1 (with our cutoff value for correct classification) and α-1 antitrypsin as valuable biomarkers of drowning. Our study, based on forensic cases, reveals our proteomic approach as a new complementary tool in the forensic diagnosis of drowning and, perhaps, in clinical future implications in drowned patients. However, this is a pilot approach, and future studies are necessary to consolidate our promising preliminary data.

New York City has had a long history of implementing local policies to reduce air pollution. Enacted as a part of PlaNYC, the Clean Heat policies aim to lower wintertime ambient air pollution by phasing out dirty No. 6 heating fuel oil and transitioning to comparatively cleaner No. 4, No. 2, or natural gas. This study evaluates the impacts of policies on ambient air pollution and, given that people spend the majority of their time inside, importantly, indoor air pollution. Using a natural experiment, we evaluate the effects of the policies by measuring average two-week levels of indoor and outdoor black carbon (BC) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in 48 upper Manhattan apartments in successive winter heating seasons before and after mandated fuel transition. We failed to observe systematic improvements in indoor BC and PM2.5 concentrations in follow-up. However, outdoor levels of PM2.5 did improve, with statistical differences observed among buildings converting to the cleanest fuels. Non-statistical improvements were observed for outdoor BC. However, when accounting for meteorological differences, apartment characteristics, and behavioral patterns that may have influenced air pollution measurements, these differences were not significant. The study results have important policy and equity implications considering the differential improvements in air quality by conversion to No. 4 oil as compared to the cleaner No. 2 oil and natural gas.

A methodology for modeling guided by its characteristic damping diagrams is proposed. From experimental data generated by standard tests the damper characteristic diagrams are constructed, which considers the force versus displacement, velocity and acceleration for the frequencies of interest. These characteristic diagrams can be classified into seven patterns, which serve as a guide to build the same mathematical model that can be identified with algorithms conventional. The methodology was validated with four different technologies of commercial dampers. The precision of the results presented errors less than 5%.

A technical review was conducted to related physical and chemical properties of flours and starches from cassava, yams, taro and sweet potato. Amyloseamylopectin content, viscosity, nutritional value and fiber, were studied to relate them with starch functional properties. A relationship was obtained between amylose-amylopectin, viscosity and fiber content with the digestibility of those starches and the glycemic index values. The use of fermentation to enhance the nutritional value of these starches is known. Starch fermentation allows the production of gluten-free bread and energy drinks as an option to diversify products. It was also observed the relationship between the starch viscosity and the fat absorption in fried foods.Se realizó una revisión de las características fisicoquímicas de las harinas y almidones de yuca, ñame, ñampí y camote, tales como el contenido de amilosa-amilopectina, la viscosidad, el valor nutricional y la fibra, con el fin de relacionarlas con sus propiedades funcionales y técnico-funcionales. Se obtuvo una relación entre el contenido de amilosa-amilopectina, viscosidad y contenido de fibra en la digestibilidad de estos almidones y los valores de índice glicémico. Se encontró que es posible introducir modificaciones por medio de la fermentación para mejorar el valor funcional de estos almidones. La fermentación permite elaborar pan sin gluten y bebidas energéticas como nuevas opciones de productos. También se encontró que existe una relación entre la viscosidad de los almidones y la disminución de absorción de la grasa en frituras.

El artículo se elaboró con la finalidad de divulgar la experiencia vivida en el curso Principios y estrategias de educación abierta para la innovación docente, generado por el proyecto OportUnidad, y de valorar la experiencia y sus recursos didácticos como posible opción para la formación sobre este tema. Fue llevado a cabo en línea, entre los meses de septiembre y diciembre de 2013. Durante el transcurso y posterior a él, se utilizaron diferentes instrumentos para recopilar información acerca del diseño, la metodología, los recursos didácticos empleados, entre otros, por parte de los participantes como de los moderadores. Se contó con un abordaje mixto del tema que consideró a toda la población que respondió a los instrumentos, 36 en total. Como resultado de esta experiencia se determinó la idoneidad de los materiales didácticos elaborados para difundir el uso de los Recursos Educativos Abiertos y la necesidad creciente de aprovecharlos en la mediación pedagógica para la Educación Superior. En conclusión, con esta experiencia se determinaron aspectos replicables para su mejoramiento.

En esta investigación se presentan los resultados obtenidos al elaborar una mezcla asfáltica MDC-2 con asfalto modificado con Icopor (poliestireno), resultado de la trituración de vasos desechables, con el ánimo de mejorar las propiedades mecánicas de las mezclas tipo rodadura y garantizar la durabilidad de las mismas bajo las solicitaciones impuestas en el período de diseño. Para el diseño se realizó la caracterización de los materiales pétreos, pertenecientes a una de las canteras de mayor utilización en la Sabana de Bogotá, del asfalto producido en Barrancabermeja, Santander, y del poliestireno obtenido de los desechos no biodegradables. El método em-pleado para la obtención de los porcentajes óptimos de asfalto-agregados-icopor, fue el Marshall. Se realizaron los siguientes ensayos: el estudio del asfalto teniendo en cuenta el envejecimiento, el comportamiento dinámico de la mezcla a partir de los ensayos de fatiga trapezoidal para 20°C y 30°C y para deformaciones de 90x10-6, 150x10-6 y 220x10-6m, ahuellamiento para una carga de 13 toneladas, similar a la del eje más pesado de un bus de Transmilenio, módulo dinámico para 15°C, 20°C y 30°C y para las frecuencias de 2.5, 5 y 10Hz. Los resultados obtenidos se contrastaron con los de una mezcla asfáltica convencional. Como conclusiones de esta investigación se destacan: la disminución en más de un 50% de la deformación plástica ocurrida por el paso de vehículos de 13 ton, de acuerdo con el modelo utilizado, el aumento de la estabilidad de la mezcla asfáltica conservando un menor peso y la posibilidad de inclusión de estos materiales de desecho que impactan el am-biente pero contribuyen con la resistencia de un material como el concreto asfáltico, entre otros.

El cáncer epitelial del ovario en Colombia es la segunda causa de morbilidad y mortalidad por tumores ginecológicos después del carcinoma de cuello uterino. Por lo regular se presenta en estados avanzados y la sobrevida es pobre. Recientes estudios de tipo clínicopatológicos y moleculares han develado nuevas teorías sobre la carcinogénesis, proponiendo un modelo dual con tumores tipos I y II. Se busca con este artículo ampliar y actualizar la información sobre estas nuevas teorías y profundizar en el conocimiento histopatológico y molecular. Para la revisión de la literatura se estructuró una estrategia de búsqueda utilizando los términos carcinoma de ovario, tumores tipo I-II, KRAS, BRAF, p-53 (MeSH y no Mesh), los cuales se articularon con operadores booleanos en las siguientes bases de datos: pubmed, ebscohost, embase, filtrando los resultados por artículos de revisión.

Hypercalcemia in children with malignancy is an uncommon condition. It has been described in leukemia patients with impaired renal excretion of calcium or osteolytic lesions. Metastatic calcinosis cutis (MCC) may develop if hypercalcemia persists. We report the case of a 5-year-old girl with an atypical dermatosis and unspecific gastrointestinal symptoms. Considered clinical diagnoses were xanthomas, histiocytosis, molluscum contagiosum, and nongenital warts. Cutaneous histological analysis showed amorphous basophilic deposits in the dermis suggestive of calcium deposits. Laboratory tests confirmed serum hypercalcemia. Extensive investigations such as bone marrow biopsy established the diagnosis of an acute pre-B cell lymphoblastic leukemia. Hypercalcemia in hematopoietic malignancies is unusual, especially as initial manifestation of the disease. Careful review of the literature fails to reveal previous reports of these peculiar cutaneous lesions of MCC in children with leukemia.

Se realizó una revisión de las características fisicoquímicas de las harinas y almidones de yuca, ñame, ñampí y camote, tales como el contenido de amilosa-amilopectina, la viscosidad, el valor nutricional y la fibra, con el fin de relacionarlas con sus propiedades funcionales y técnico-funcionales. Se obtuvo una relación entre el contenido de amilosa-amilopectina, viscosidad y contenido de fibra en la digestibilidad de estos almidones y los valores de índice glicémico. Se encontró que es posible introducir modificaciones por medio de la fermentación para mejorar el valor funcional de estos almidones. La fermentación permite elaborar pan sin gluten y bebidas energéticas como nuevas opciones de productos. También se encontró que existe una relación entre la viscosidad de los almidones y la disminución de absorción de la grasa en frituras.

The pathophysiology of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) involves platelet activation and thrombus formation after the rupture of atherosclerotic plaques. Thrombin is generated at the blood-plaque interface in association with cellular membranes on cells and platelets. Thrombin also amplifies the response to the tissue injury, coagulation and platelet response, so the treatment of ACS is based on the combined use of both antiplatelet (such as aspirin, clopidogrel, prasugrel and ticagrelor) and antithrombotic drugs (unfractionated heparin, enoxaparin, fondaparinux and bivalirudin). Bivalirudin competitively inhibits thrombin with high affinity, a predictable response from its linear pharmacokinetics and short action. However, a present remarkable controversy exists between the latest main Guidelines in Clinical Practice and the key trials evaluating the use of bivalirudin in ACS. The aim of this review is to update the development of bivalirudin, including pharmacological properties, obtained information from clinical trials evaluating efficacy and safety of bivalirudin in ACS; as well as the recommendations of clinical Guidelines.

Organ growth depends on two distinct, yet integrated, processes: cell proliferation and post-mitotic cell expansion. Although the regulatory networks of plant cell proliferation during organ growth have begun to be unveiled, the mechanisms regulating post-mitotic cell growth remain mostly unknown. Here, we report the characterization of three EXIGUA (EXI) genes that encode different subunits of the cellulose synthase complex specifically required for secondary cell wall formation. Despite this highly specific role of EXI genes, all the cells within the leaf, even those that do not have secondary walls, display small sizes in the exi mutants. In addition, we found a positive correlation between cell size and the DNA ploidy levels in exi mutant leaves, suggesting that both processes share some regulatory components. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that the collapsed xylem vessels of the exi mutants hamper water transport throughout the plant, which, in turn, limits the turgor pressure levels required for normal post-mitotic cell expansion during leaf growth.

Background. Pityriasis alba (PA) is a frequent cause of consultation in tropical areas due to its chronic course, frequent relapses, and notorious hypopigmented lesions in pediatric dark skin populations. Currently, no treatment is widely accepted. Objective. To assess the efficacy of 0.0003% calcitriol and 0.1% tacrolimus ointments compared with placebo in the treatment of endemic PA. Methods. Twenty-eight children aged 3–17 years with 56 symmetrical lesions and phototype IV-V, were randomly assigned to receive the treatments on target lesions on the face. Improvement was evaluated at baseline and 8 weeks later clinically and by digital quantification of the affected area, colorimetry, and transepidermal water loss (TEWL). Results. Tacrolimus and calcitriol ointments induced a mean improvement of 68%, compared to 44% of placebo. We found an elevated TEWL in PA lesions. In the treated plaques, the reduction of the affected area was associated with improvement of pigmentation and TEWL. Conclusions. Calcitriol and tacrolimus induced similar repigmentation in endemic PA lesions. Melanogenic, anti-inflammatory, and barrier defect restoration properties of these drugs may explain these findings.

High-sensitivity TnT (hsTnT) has been proposed to improve the diagnosis and stratification in acute coronary syndromes. Copeptin has been proposed for a rapid and accurate rule out of acute myocardial infarction, but some doubts exist about its use out of the first hours from admission. Abnormalities of serum hsTnT and copeptin levels in non-STEACS and negative TnT, could have prognostic implications. Methods. We included 122 non-STEACS patients without raised TnT, 33 disease controls and 43 healthy controls. We measured hsTnT and copeptin levels. Clinical follow-up at 12 months was performed for adverse endpoints. Results. Non-STEACS patients had raised hsTnT compared with both control groups (P=0.036 and P
