ΔΕΝ ΔΙΑΤΙΘΕΤΑΙ ΠΕΡΙΛΗΨΗ, Even though boron (B), as a trace micronutrient, occurs in natural waters and organisms, its high concentration could cause harmful and even toxic effects for organisms. Lately, studies about positive and negative effects of B on aquatic organisms have been increased with the growing scientific awareness. The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of B-containing feed (0.01%, 0.05%, 0.10%, and 0.20% of B in feed) on hematological and serum biochemical parameters of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) compared to the control feed without B. Among the most remarkable results, red blood cell, hemoglobin, and hematocrit values were dramatically decreased in the 0.20 % of B group compared to the control (P 0.01%) to feed induced negative changes in blood parameters of rainbow trout.

The fish were fed with diets containing 300 mg kg(-1) L-carnitine (LC300), other group was fed with diets containing 600 mg kg(-1) L-carnitine (LC600) and control group was not supplementary L-carnitine for 63 days. The weight gain of LC600 fed with L-carnitine supplemented was found to be 7.73% higher than in control group. Feed conversion ratio in LC600 (1.66) and LC300 (1.60) is better than in control group (2.00). L-carnitine supplemented groups would be lower cost of production than control. Economic conversion ratio (ECR) of LC300 (2.71 US.$ kg) would represent a saving of 0.44 US.$ kg(-1) compared to the control. L-carnitine administration did not affect proximate composition of muscle except for protein percent. Protein content of L-carnitine supplemented groups was higher than control group. Total saturated monounsaturated and polyunsaturated muscle fatty acid content increased by L-carnitine supplementation in rainbow trout. The results indicate that supplementation of 600 mg L-carnitine/kg diet is more effective on growth than the other L-carnitine supplementation level 300 mg kg(-1) and control diet in commercial cage conditions. One group was fed normal commercial grow-out feed (the control group) while the other group was given feed containing 500 mg kg L-carnitine. The addition of carnitine (the second group) had a positive effect on growth (7.9% higher than the control group). According to the final results, the carnitine-supplemented group had greater final weights (151.86 +/- 27.19 g) than those of the control group (141.80 +/- 24.83 g) (P < 0.05). This enhancement in growth was not due to a better feed conversion ratio (1.16 +/- 0.31 vs. 1.20 +/- 0.28) (P > 0.05). At the end of the feeding period of 90 days, 9.67% less feed containing L-carnitine was consumed by fish as compared to the control diet. The carnitine-supplemented diet promoted rapid growth (7.77% more than the control diet). The final total weight of the carnitine-fed group was also greater (10.022 +/- 0.83 kg m(-3)) than that of the control group (8.933 +/- 0.91 kg m(-3)) (P > 0.05).

The results showed that edible part of carcass of male and female tilapia were 52.8+/-1.34% and 51.4+/-0.57%, respectively. Dry matter of carcass was 21.8+/-0.08% whereas water content was 78.2+/-0.08%. Crude protein, crude fat and crude ash were 2.66+/-0.75%, 12.16+/-0.74% and 5.18+/-0.02%, respectively.

Changes in the antioxidant systems of the liver tissues of sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) adapted to low salinity levels (0 ‰) were investigated. Malondialdehyde levels, as a specific indicator of oxidant stress, were determined. The results indicated highly significant differences among the test and control groups (P < 0.05). Some histopathological destruction, liver weight and hepatosomatic index values were determined at high levels and, moreover, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase (GPX), glucose-6phosphate-dehydrogenase and malondialdehyde activities increased, while reducted glutathione levels decreased in comparison with the control group. An increase in the malondialdehyde level was determined to be an indicator of lipid peroxidation.
