International audience; We report on diurnal, tidal, and seasonal variations of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), water partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2), and associated water–air CO2 fluxes in a tidal creek of a temperate coastal lagoon with 70% of intertidal flats, during eight tidal/diurnal cycles and two consecutive years covering all seasons. Surface waters of the lagoon were always slightly oversaturated in CO2 with respect to the atmosphere with an average pCO2 value of 496 ± 36 ppmv. Seasonally, subsurface water pCO2 values were controlled by both temperature and biological/tidal advection effects that compensated each other and resulted in weak annual variations. High-resolution temporal pCO2 records reveal that the highest fluctuations (192 ppmv) occurred at the tidal/diurnal scale as a result of biological activity, advection from the tidal flat, and porewater pumping that all contributed to water pCO2 and carbonate chemistry variations. Total alkalinity (TA) versus salinity plots suggest a net production of alkalinity in the lagoon attributed to benthic carbonate dissolution and/or anaerobic degradation of organic matter. We specifically highlighted that for the same salinity range, during flooding, daytime pCO2 were generally lower than nighttime pCO2 values because of photosynthesis, whereas during ebbing, daytime pCO2 were higher than nighttime pCO2 values because of heating. Waters in the lagoon were a relatively weak CO2 source to the atmosphere over the year compared to other estuarine and lagoon waters elsewhere, and to sediment-air fluxes measured simultaneously by atmospheric Eddy Covariance (EC) in the Arcachon lagoon. Because of low values and small variations of the air-sea pCO2 gradient, the variability of fluxes calculated using the piston velocity parameterization was greatly controlled by the wind speed at the diurnal and, to a lesser extent, seasonal time scales. During the emersion, the comparison of these pCO2 data in the tidal creek with EC fluxes measured 1.8 km away on the tidal flat suggests high heterogeneity in air-sea CO2 fluxes, both spatially and at short time scales according to the inundation cycle and the wind speed. In addition to tidal pumping when the flat becomes emerged, our data suggest that lateral water movement during the emersion of the flat generates strong spatial heterogeneity in water–air CO2 flux.

The influence of particle impact temperature and size on adhesion of soft particle/hard substrate material in cold spray has been scarcely studied. While the relationship between particle impact conditions and particle/substrate bonding is commonly established through FEM studies, they typically lack comparison to experimental data. In the current study, characterization was performed by post-mortem observation of removed adhered particles and collected rebounded particles contact surfaces. Observations are correlated to interfacial pressure and temperature using FEM, otherwise impossible to measure in situ. The influence of pressure and its temporal evolution with particle deformation on melting and bonding is evaluated. Evidence of anisotropic particle deformation associated with microstructural orientation and grain geometrical features has been observed. Experimental evidence confirms that the particle south pole experiences restricted deformation as the original powder grain morphology was observed even after impact. Interfacial melt features have been detected and the melt zone generation, propagation, stagnation and regression tracked through FEM have shown important influence on single impact adhesion processes. Observed metallic bonding features and FEM indicate that increasing particle velocity, i.e., decreasing particle size, accelerates particle bonding processes to occur within tens of nanoseconds. Contact compressive pressure and interfacial expansion increase with particle increasing velocity and temperature.

IntroductionThe 2021 Action Plan for Pain from the Canadian Pain Task Force advocates for patient-centred pain care at all levels of healthcare across provinces. Shared decision-making is the crux of patient-centred care. Implementing the action plan will require innovative shared decision-making interventions, specifically following the disruption of chronic pain care during the COVID-19 pandemic. The first step in this endeavour is to assess current decisional needs (ie, decisions most important to them) of Canadians with chronic pain across their care pathways.Methods and analysisDesignGrounded in patient-oriented research approaches, we will perform an online population-based survey across the ten Canadian provinces. We will report methods and data following the CROSS reporting guidelines.SamplingThe Léger Marketing company will administer the online population-based survey to its representative panel of 500 000 Canadians to recruit 1646 adults (age ≥18 years old) with chronic pain according to the definition by the International Association for the Study of Pain (eg, pain ≥12 weeks).ContentBased on the Ottawa Decision Support Framework, the self-administered survey has been codesigned with patients and contain six core domains: (1) healthcare services, consultation and postpandemic needs, (2) difficult decisions experienced, (3) decisional conflict, (4) decisional regret, (5) decisional needs and (6) sociodemographic characteristics. We will use several strategies such as random sampling to improve survey quality.AnalysisWe will perform descriptive statistical analysis. We will identify factors associated with clinically significant decisional conflict and decision regret using multivariate analyses.Ethics and disseminationEthics was approved by the Research Ethics Board at the Research Centre of the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Sherbrooke (project #2022-4645). We will codesign knowledge mobilisation products with research patient partners (eg, graphical summaries and videos). Results will be disseminated via peer-reviewed journals and national and international conferences to inform the development of innovative shared decision-making interventions for Canadians with chronic pain.

In order to provide a basis for future optimization and control of the cold spray process, we experimentally studied the impact of various factors on the ductility (% elongation) of copper coatings. For the current application, cold-sprayed copper is employed as a corrosion barrier on carbon steel, while in addition to this, sufficient ductility is required for mechanical integrity. Results show that the cold-sprayed copper coating ductility increases with annealing temperature. A corresponding linear relationship is also derived with ductility and hardness. The current investigation further shows that there can be significant variability in ductility when the feedstock powder characteristics (e.g., chemical composition) are changed while keeping the spray and heat treatment conditions constant. Configuration/substrate dimensions are also considered as factors affecting the ductility of the copper during the cold spray process. The main findings that were observed include: (1) an increase in ductility from ~ 9 to ~ 29% when heat treating the samples from 320 to 600 °C; (2) a variation in ductility from ~ 8 to ~ 39% upon changing powder characteristics; and (3) a decrease in ductility from ~ 27 to ~ 15%, upon increasing the size of the substrate and by changing its geometry.

Cold spray is a solid-state, powder-based consolidation technique for deposition of coatings, component repair and near-net-shape additive manufacturing. Its unique attributes have propelled the development and commercialization, yet cold spray has only experienced limited deployment. In fact, cold spray technology could be extended to a considerably broader range of applications and achieve a much higher level of industry adoption by focusing on innovative ways to unlock current roadblocks that prevent it from reaching its full potential. Cold spray R&D efforts have doubled during the last decade and along with new industry applications and novel demands provide both a strong body of knowledge and market pull to identify and address these roadblocks. This paper offers the authors’ perspective on what are the next steps to be taken in cold spray R&D to unleash its remarkable potential.

Laser heat treatment offers localized heating zone, high processing speed, and feasibility to treat complex large parts, making it a technology of choice to tailor the hardness and fatigue properties of parts. Determining laser heat treatment process parameters is important to achieve the sought material performance; however, the technique’s high speed makes it difficult to record the thermal history of the part via standard measurement techniques. Furthermore conducting experiments to explore the effect of process parameters is costly. This work aimed at designing a laser heat treatment to be applied to as-deposited copper cold spray coating to meet a 30% through-thickness hardness reduction. An artificial neural network model was developed and used to find laser heat treatment conditions allowing meeting the sought hardness reduction. The thermal histories were obtained through thermal modeling of the laser heating process and the resulting hardness reductions obtained experimentally. This allowed the neural network to correlate the local hardness reduction (model output) to local thermal history (model input). The model was capable of predicting the local hardness reduction of the part according to the local thermal history resulting from various laser heat treatment conditions and thus, may eventually be used to assist in process parameters selection and optimization.

ObjectivesThe COVID-19 pandemic has led to the prioritisation of teleconsultation instead of face-to-face encounters. However, teleconsultation revealed some shortcomings and undesirable effects that may counterbalance benefits. This study aims to explore the perspective of patients with chronic diseases on teleconsultation in primary care. This article also proposes recommendations to provide patient-oriented and appropriate teleconsultations.DesignWe conducted a qualitative descriptive study that explored the patients’ perception regarding teleconsultation services and the following themes: access, perceived benefits and disadvantages, interprofessional collaboration, patient-centred approach, specific competencies of professionals, and patient’s global needs and preferences.SettingSix primary care clinics in three regions of Quebec.Participants39 patients were interviewed by telephone through semistructured qualitative interviews.ResultsPatients want to maintain teleconsultation for the postpandemic period as long as their recommendations are followed: be able to choose to come to the clinic if they wish to, feel that their individual and environmental characteristics are considered, feel involved in the choice of the modality of each consultation, feel that interprofessional collaboration and patient-centred approach are promoted, and to maintain the professionalism, which must not be lessened despite the remote context.ConclusionPatients mainly expressed high satisfaction with teleconsultation. However, several issues must be addressed. Patients do and should contribute to the implementation of teleconsultation in primary care. They wish to be frequently consulted about their preferred consultation modality, which may change over time. The patient perspective must, therefore, be part of the balanced implementation of optimal teleconsultation that is currently taking place.

In cold spray, high adhesion of soft materials on hard substrates is commonly achieved by using helium as the propelling gas. This is the case of copper coatings on steel where adhesion may reach values as high as 60 to 80 MPa (glue failure), however, helium is a limited, expensive natural resource, and the use of more abundant nitrogen gas is preferred in an industrial setting. Unfortunately, when using nitrogen gas, little to no adhesion is obtained. In order to eliminate the use of helium gas we studied how laser assisted cold spray could lead to an improvement in adhesion of nitrogen sprayed copper coatings. In this work, several laser parameters (e.g., power and spot size) and process parameters (traverse speed, relative position laser spot vs. gas jet) were varied at a coupon level. Upon optimization, an equivalent adhesion to the coatings prepared with helium was obtained. Furthermore, the cross section of the coatings showed that the copper particles penetrated the steel, similar to what is observed when using helium gas. Optimization of these parameters for application to large diameter (~559 mm) cylinders was also performed. A discussion on the mechanisms which contribute to achieving high adhesion considering the use of helium versus laser assistance is provided.

Segregating the convoluted effects of particle size, impact temperature and velocity on deposition behavior and adhesion is of utmost interest to the cold spray field. The current study aims to associate the particle impact behavior and adhesion to its in-flight characteristics by studying and decoupling the influence of particle size, temperature and velocity for single particle impacts and full coatings. Experimental results reveal that in-situ peening processes contribute to the adhesion at low impact temperature while particle velocity controls the adhesion/cohesion at increased particle impact temperatures. The benefits of both bonding mechanisms are discussed in terms of measured adhesion/cohesion, bend-to-break fracture surfaces, pseudoplasticity, deposition efficiency and critical velocity. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results provide individual particle trajectory, size, temperature and velocity, of successfully deposited particles, which have led to the observed signs of metallurgical bonding.

Background The implementation of evidence-based innovations is incentivized as part of primary care reform in Canada. In the Province of Québec, it generated the creation of interprofessional care models involving registered nurses and social workers as members of primary care clinics. However, the scope of practice for these professionals remains variable and suboptimal. In 2019, expert committees co-designed and published two evidence-based practice guides, but no clear strategy has been identified to support their assimilation. This project’s goal is to support the implementation and deployment of practice guides for both social workers and registered nurses using a train-the-trainer educational intervention. Methods/design This three-phase project is a developmental evaluation using a multiple case study design across 17 primary care clinics. It will involve trainers in healthcare centers, patients, registered nurses and social workers. The development and implementation of an expanded train-the-trainer strategy will be informed by a patient-oriented research approach, the Kirkpatrick learning model, and evidence-based practice guides. For each case and phase, the qualitative and quantitative data will be analyzed using a convergent design method and will be integrated through assimilation. Discussion This educational intervention model will allow us to better understand the complex context of primary care clinics, involving different settings and services offered. This study protocol, based on reflective practice, patient-centered research and focused on the needs of the community in collaboration with partners and patients, may serve as an evidence based educational intervention model for further study in primary care.

Summary Background Hydrogen peroxide and ozone have been used as chemical decontamination agents for N95 masks during supply shortages. If left behind on the masks the residues of both chemicals are representing a potential health hazard by skin contact and respiratory exposure. Aim Characterization of hydrogen peroxide and ozone residues on mask surfaces after chemical decontamination. Methods Various N95 masks were decontaminated using two commercial systems employing either aerosol spray or vaporization of hydrogen peroxide in the presence of ozone. Following the decontamination, the masks were aired out to eliminate moisture and potential chemical residues. The residual hydrogen peroxide and ozone were monitored in the gas phase above the mask surface, and hydrogen peroxide residue directly on mask surfaces using a colorimetric assay. Findings After decontamination, hydrogen peroxide and ozone were detectable in the gas phase in the vicinity of masks even after five hours (h) of aeration. Hydrogen peroxide was also detected on all studied masks, and levels up to 56 mg per mask were observed after 0.5 h of aeration. All residues gradually decreased with aeration, likely due to decomposition and vaporization. Conclusion Hydrogen peroxide and ozone were present on N95 masks after decontamination. With appropriate aeration, the gaseous residue levels in the vicinity of the masks decreased to permissible levels as defined by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The reliable assays to monitor these residues are crucial to ensure the safety of the mask users.

International audience; High-energy tidal beaches are exposed to strong physical forcings. The submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) that occurs in intertidal sandy sediments includes both terrestrial, fresh groundwater flow and seawater recirculation, and plays a significant role in regulating biogeochemical cycles in some coastal zones. In this transition zone between land and sea, complex biogeochemical reactions alter the chemical composition of pore waters that discharge to the coastal ocean. Recent studies highlight that SGD can be a significant source of carbon to the coastal ocean but very few have investigated SGD in high-energy environments. We have characterized the dissolved carbon dynamics in such a high-energy environment (Truc Vert Beach, SW France) through pore water sampling in key compartments of the SGD system. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC), pH, total alkalinity (TA), and the isotopic composition of dissolved inorganic carbon (d 13 C-DIC) were measured in pore waters sampled at regular intervals between 2011 and 2014 in the intertidal zone of the beach, the mixing zone of the subterranean estuary (STE), and the freshwater aquifer upstream from the beach. Results reveal that SGD exports dissolved carbon mostly as DIC to the Aquitaine coast some of which originates from the aerobic respiration of marine organic matter within the beach aquifer. This is highlighted by the opposite spatial trend of DOC, which is consumed, and DIC, which is produced. Saline pore waters expelled from the beach through tidally-driven recirculation of seawater provide about 4400 tons of carbon per year to the coastal zone of the 240 km-long Aquitaine sandy coast. Terrestrial groundwater, characterized by high pCO2 values, is also a significant contributor to the DIC flux to the coastal ocean (16200 tons per year). This flux is abated by CO2 evasion in the upper beach, at the onset of the salinity gradient in the STE, and within the surficial freshwater aquifer along the forest-beach transect below the coastal foredune. Accordingly, the DIC:TA ratio evolves to below 1, suggesting that this SGD increases the buffer capacity of coastal seawater against acidification. This study demonstrates that high-energy beaches are active vectors of DIC from the land to the coastal ocean as well as significant sources of CO2 to the atmosphere, and must therefore be taken into consideration in SGD carbon budgets.

International audience; On the Bay of Biscay continental shelf, there are several mid-shelf mud patches including La Grande Vasière to the north, the West Gironde Mud Patch (WGMP) off the Gironde estuary and the Basque Mud Patch close to the Spanish border. In general, these deposits are several meters thick and cover coarser substrate. Questions remain about their storage capability for fine particles and carbon. This work investigates the sedimentation of the WGMP in order to develop a first estimate of organic carbon (OC) burial. Interface sediment cores were collected at nine stations along two cross-shelf transects in October-November 2016. X-radiograph imaging and grain-size analyses were used to characterize sedimentary structures. 210 Pb xs depth profiles were established to calculate sediment (SAR) and mass (MAR) accumulation rates. Sedimentary structures indicate episodic sandy inputs overlying older deposits at proximal sites, and relatively continuous sedimentation at seaward locations. On the outer-central portion of the northern transect, a maximum SAR (0.47 cm yr − 1) was observed, suggesting a depocenter. On the southern transect, excluding two stations where sedimentary inputs appear massive but sporadic, the SARs are lower (

Copper coatings produced by additive manufacturing techniques often present complex microstructural heterogeneity. Reducing microstructural heterogeneity is critical for promoting uniform mechanical and corrosion behavior. The current study examines copper coatings at the closure weld zone of a prototype steel container designed to store used nuclear fuel. In this region, the copper coating is produced by two additive manufacturing processes: electrodeposition and cold spray. Microscopy analysis revealed a highly non-uniform microstructure in the as-processed state. After heat treatment at 350 °C for 1 h under inert conditions, this heterogeneity was significantly reduced resulting in favourable microstructural characteristics for the current application.

En 2013, une étude de l'ANSES sur la contamination par le mercure (Hg) de la chair des poissons des quatre plus grands lacs aquitains -Hourtin-Carcans (HC), Lacanau (L), Cazaux-Sanguinet (CS) et Parentis-Biscarrosse (PB)- a montré que des concentrations dépassant les recommandations de consommation (0,5 mg Hg.kg-1 poids frais) des poissons carnivores des lacs HC et L ont été observées chez le sandre (Sander Lucioperca). Cette contamination pouvant constituer un risque pour la santé humaine, un arrêté préfectoral a interdit la consommation de sandres péchés dans ces lacs. Par ailleurs, cette première étude a mis en évidence un gradient de contamination nord-sud, les poissons pêchés dans les lacs médocains (HC et L) étant plus contaminés que ceux pêchés dans les lacs landais (CS et PB). Les résultats du projet CLAQH ont confirmé ce gradient décroissant nord-sud dans la chair des poissons carnivores. Les concentrations en mercure atmosphérique mesurées ponctuellement ou accumulées dans les mousses végétales autour des lacs sont caractéristiques d’environnements dits « éloignés et vierges » de toutes sources significatives de contamination. D'autres facteurs pouvant expliquer ce gradient de contamination chez les poissons ont été étudiés, tels que la structure de la chaîne alimentaire et le rôle potentiel des plantes aquatiques dans la méthylation du Hg, la forme méthylée du mercure étant la forme la plus disponible pour les organismes biologiques et la plus toxique. Aucun des facteurs étudiés ne peut expliquer ces différences nord-sud. En revanche, un important gradient décroissant de concentrations en sulfate nord-sud a été mesuré dans les eaux et les sédiments des 4 lacs. L’enrichissement en sulfate des lacs médocains provient des zones agricoles du bassin versant du lac de Hourtin-Carcans. La présence de ces sulfates favorise le développement de bactéries sulfato-réductrices, localisées principalement au niveau du biofilm des plantes aquatiques et du sédiment, responsables de la production de méthylmercure. Cette production accrue de méthylmercure dans les lacs de Hourtin-Carcans et de Lacanau est responsable de la forte accumulation de ce métal dans les poissons carnivores de ces lacs. Cette étude préconise de ne pas consommer les poissons carnivores issus de ces deux lacs pour les personnes les plus vulnérables (femmes enceintes et enfants). Par ailleurs, douze autres éléments traces métalliques ont été analysés dans les muscles des poissons et aucun risque pour la santé et l'environnement n'a été décelé pour les métaux réglementés (Cd, Pb) et non réglementés (Cu, Zn, As, Ni, Co, V, Cr, Se, Ag, Al) par la Commission européenne.

Cold-sprayed Cu coatings are known to have low ductility as the microstructure is composed of dynamically recrystallized fine grains, as well as larger crystals with high dislocation density. Annealing is typically employed to restore the ductility of the Cu coating to form larger crystals with low dislocation density; however, the influence of annealing on the microstructure and chemistry of the particle-particle interfaces (PPIs) have yet to be explored in great detail. Here, we report the structural evolution of PPI after annealing treatments. Nanoscale pores at the PPI can be effectively reduced by annealing and the trapped oxide films in the as-sprayed coatings break up and coarsen following classical interfacial phenomena. As a result, metallurgical bonding between particles increased significantly, contributing to the enhanced ductility of the cold-sprayed Cu coating.

This paper presents the development work undertaken to tailor Cu powder size specifications to produce dense cold spray Cu coatings featuring strong adherence on steel substrates. Through review of historical data generated in the course of the development of Cu coatings for corrosion protection of Used (Nuclear) Fuel Containers, it was found that particle size distribution was particularly critical to meet application adhesion requirements of 60 MPa and prevent nozzle clogging during application; D01 and D90 were fixed at 5 and 60 µm, respectively. The effect of powder size on coating microstructure and adhesion was further investigated with four Cu powder lots presenting different granulometries. The four lots were analyzed for composition, hardness, microstructure and morphology. Their in-flight particle velocities were measured using a coldspraymeter and the impact temperatures and velocities were simulated. Using fixed spraying conditions consisting of a He bond coat and a nitrogen buildup step, 3-4-mm-thick coatings were produced and tested for bond strength. Coating cross sections and fracture surfaces of selected coatings were examined. These trials confirmed that although the various powder sizes tested produced dense and sound coatings, tight control of particle size distributions was required to achieve optimal impact velocities that ensure deformation of the steel and good coating adhesion.

This paper presents the results of a study to evaluate stainless steel thermal spray coatings on aluminum-based substrates. Coating wear, corrosion, and thermal cycling resistance were evaluated using pin-on-disk, cyclic corrosion, and a custom laser-based heating system, respectively, for 300-series stainless steel coatings deposited by arc-sprayed and cold-sprayed systems. Arc spray coatings were found to have equivalent wear and frictional performance as compared to gray cast iron (wear rates of 0.730-1.524 versus 1.294 × 10−5 mm3/m, COF of 0.35-0.36 versus 0.36). However, arc spray coating exhibited low adhesion (~ 30 MPa) and early spalling under thermal cycling conditions, i.e., 2018 International Thermal Spray Conference, May 7-10, 2018, Orlando, FL, USA

An internationally recognized best practice for disposing used nuclear fuels is to store them in specially designed containers in deep geological repositories. One type of spent fuel container is a carbon steel canister with a cold-sprayed copper coating. The aim of this study is to assess the impact of various factors on the ductility of this protective copper layer. The current investigation finds that there can be significant variability in ductility when feedstock powder size and chemical composition are changed while keeping spraying and heat treatment conditions constant. Test results show that the ductility of nitrogen-sprayed copper decreases with increasing hardness, but can be improved by raising annealing temperature from 300 to 600 °C. The effects of substrate geometry and process variations are discussed as well.

The current study details an experimental analysis that elucidates the relationship between the processing history, microstructural evolution, and bulk properties of cold-sprayed pure FCC copper coatings. Particular attention is paid to determining the effect of low temperature ex situ and in situ annealing (350 °C; 1 h) on the evolution of microstructure (i.e. grains and subgrains) and porosity, as well as the combined influence of these defects on the bulk properties (microhardness, and electrical conductivity) and fracture mechanics of cold-sprayed copper. SEM, TEM, in situ TEM, and fractography analysis together revealed that the inherently brittle nature of the cold-sprayed metals cannot be explained solely by their porosity or microstructure; their fracture mechanics is most likely governed by the coupling interaction between porosity and the nanocrystalline dynamically/static recrystallized (RX) grains adjacent to the pores. Under tensile loading, pores (0.5–20 µm) in the as-sprayed copper can easily act as crack tips which then propagate along the adjacent RX grains (∼100 nm), resulting in a brittle cleavage fracture. Although low-temperature annealing was not sufficient to remove the porosity, it was capable of promoting recovery and grain growth in these RX grains. The ductility of the region ahead of the crack tips was therefore enhanced to promote dimpling and potentially crack blunting. Consequently, this low-temperature annealing improved the tensile ductility of the cold-sprayed copper by 2 orders of magnitude (from ∼0.2% to ∼25% strain).

International audience; Mercury (Hg) and methyl mercury (MeHg) concentrations have never been measured in sediments of coastal lakes of Aquitaine, although high concentrations of Hg have been measured in fish. Our objective was to characterize benthic biogeochemical processes and the distribution of Hg in lake sediments and to connect these results with fish contamination. For this, we mapped and characterized sediments. We measured sediment Hg and MeHg content, and biogeochemical parameters. We identified organic deposits in deep areas, and sandy sediments in shallow areas. Sediments were anoxic below the sediment–water interface. The average Hg concentration in organic sediment was 213 μg kg−1 dry weight. Sandy sediments had an average Hg concentration of 4 μg kg−1 dw. We measured concentrations below 6 μg kg−1 dw in sediments from streams that drain the catchment. Similar concentrations in the four lakes suggest that the source of total Hg was not a point source in a given lake. The highest MeHg concentrations were found in the upper centimetres of organic sediments, where sulphate reduction occurred. MeHg represented 2.53% of total Hg for Lake Carcans-Hourtin, less in other lakes. The proportion of MeHg in sediment followed lake water sulphate concentrations. High sulphate concentrations resulted from agricultural activity in the Lake Carcans-Hourtin catchment. Our results corroborate the hypothesis that Hg methylation is linked to sulphate-reducing activity. High fluxes of sulphate from a drainage basin may induce large proportions of potentially bioavailable MeHg in lake sediment, even in non-polluted areas. The Hg methylation activity in the sediment reflected the exposure of predatory fish to MeHg.

During land-aquatic transfer, carbon (C) and inorganic nutrients (IN) are transformed in soils, groundwater, and at the groundwater-surface water interface as well as in stream channels and stream sediments. However, processes and factors controlling these transfers and transformations are not well constrained, particularly with respect to land use effect. We compared C and IN concentrations in shallow groundwater and first-order streams of a sandy lowland catchment dominated by two types of land use: pine forest and maize cropland. Contrary to forest groundwater, crop groundwater exhibited oxic conditions all-year round as a result of higher evapotranspiration and better lateral drainage that decreased the water table below the organic-rich soil horizon, prevented the leaching of soil-generated dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in groundwater, and thus limited consumption of dissolved oxygen (O-2). In crop groundwater, oxic conditions inhibited denitrification and methanogenesis resulting in high nitrate (NO3-; on average 1140 +/- 485 mu mol L-1) and low methane (CH4; 40 +/- 25 nmol L-1) concentrations. Conversely, anoxic conditions in forest groundwater led to lower NO3- (25 +/- 40 mu mol L-1) and higher CH4 (1770 +/- 1830 nmol L-1) concentrations. The partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO(2); 30,650 +/- 11,590 ppmv) in crop groundwater was significantly lower than in forest groundwater (50,630 +/- 26,070 ppmv), and was apparently caused by the deeper water table delaying downward diffusion of soil CO2 to the water table. In contrast, pCO(2) was not significantly different in crop (4480 +/- 2680 ppmv) and forest (4900 +/- 4500 ppmv) streams, suggesting faster degassing in forest streams resulting from greater water turbulence. Although NO3- concentrations indicated that denitrification occurred in riparian-forest groundwater, crop streams nevertheless exhibited important signs of spring and summer eutrophication such as the development of macrophytes. Stream eutrophication favored development of anaerobic conditions in crop stream sediments, as evidenced by increased ammonia (NH4+) and CH4 in stream waters and concomitant decreased in NO3- concentrations as a result of sediment denitrification. In crop streams, dredging and erosion of streambed sediments during winter sustained high concentration of particulate organic C, NH4+ and CH4. In forest streams, dissolved iron (Fe2+), NH4+ and CH4 were negatively correlated with O-2 reflecting the gradual oxygenation of stream water and associated oxidations of Fe2+, NH4+ and CH4. The results overall showed that forest groundwater behaved as source of CO2 and CH4 to streams, the intensity depending on the hydrological connectivity among soils, groundwater, and streams. CH4 production was prevented in cropland in soils and groundwater, however crop groundwater acted as a source of CO2 to streams (but less so than forest groundwater). Conversely, in streams, pCO(2) was not significantly affected by land use while CH4 production was enhanced by cropland. At the catchment scale, this study found substantial biogeochemical heterogeneity in C and IN concentrations between forest and crop waters, demonstrating the importance of including the full vegetation-groundwater-stream continuum when estimating land-water fluxes of C (and nitrogen) and attempting to understand their spatial and temporal dynamics.

International audience; We collected samples from sea water, runnel water, beach pore waters, water from the unconfined surficial aquifer discharging at the beach face, groundwater, and rainwater from the Aquitanian coast in order to determine the flux of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), phosphorus and silica from terrestrial submarine groundwater discharge (SGD). The flux of fresh groundwater was obtained from a water balance calculation based on precipitation and evapotranspiration and assessment of the coastal watershed from hydrograph separation. Waters with intermediate salinities between sea water and freshwaters are found all along the 240-km-long coast, indicating that SGD is ubiquitous. The estimated fresh water flux is 2.25m3d−1m−1 longshore. Terrestrial SGD provides a DIN flux of 9·106mol each year to the adjacent coastal zone. This flux is about four times lower than the release of DIN due to tidally driven saline SGD. The freshwater DIN flux is low because the upland land use consists almost exclusively of pine forest. Dissolved organic nitrogen represents more than 60% of the total dissolved nitrogen flux. Dissolved iron, phosphorus and silica have much higher concentrations in the anoxic forest aquifer than in the fresh-water end-member of the subterranean estuary sampled in the upper beach aquifer. This suggests that the salinity gradient of the estuary does not correspond to a redox gradient. The redox front between anoxic groundwater and fresh oxic waters occurs below the soil-depleted foredune/yellow dune. Anoxic P- and Si-rich waters seep directly on the beach face only in the north Gironde, where the foredunes are eroded. This study reveals the role of the sandy foredune aquifer in biogeochemical fluxes from SGD, which is to dilute and oxidize waters from the unconfined surficial upland aquifer.

International audience; We have studied the heterogeneity of vertical profiles of biogeochemical components obtained from sediment core slicing. Sediment cores were collected in the intertidal zone of the Arcachon Bay and on the continental slope of the Bay of Biscay, at 550 and 1000m depth. At each station of the Arcachon Bay, five 1m-side zones were delimited at low tide. In each square, 3 cores were collected. Spatial heterogeneity on the continental slope was obtained from the study of 3 cores of multi-corer while 2 or 3 multi-corer deployments were used during the same oceanographic cruise. Similarity between profiles was determined to estimate the spatial heterogeneity at different scales. In the Arcachon Bay, results showed a spatial heterogeneity at a decimetre scale on apparently homogeneous areas. Despite the spatial variability, all the replicated profiles in Arcachon Bay sediments had similar trends, suggesting homogeneous benthic properties. However, a sampling with replicate cores handling is required for seasonal monitoring or study of biogeochemical mechanisms in coastal environments. We observe that the spatial variability on the continental margin of the Bay of Biscay is lower than in coastal environment of the Arcachon Bay. Heterogeneity is equivalent at a decimetre scale and at a hundred meters scale, which is the precision of the sampling positioning due to the drift of the boat and the tilt of the corer cable. In addition, our 10-year-long database for the Bay of Biscay showed that differences in the shape of profiles obtained in sediment cores collected at the same stations throughout this long period may not be interpreted in terms of evolution with time, because the observed variability is as high as the spatial heterogeneity.

Nutrient recycling is highly controlled by benthic macrophytes in shallow coastal zones. In seagrass bed, this recycling mainly occurs in sediment porewater, which is considered to be the main source of nutrients for plant growth. This work investigated the effect of a Zostera noltei meadow on the biogeochemistry of inorganic nutrients and carbon in vegetated sediments of the Arcachon Bay. We characterized the vertical distributions of dissolved inorganic C (DIC), NH 4 + , dissolved inorganic P (DIP) and redox-sensitive particulate inorganic P in bare sediments and in sediments heavily or sparsely colonised by Z . noltei . The obtained concentration profiles were used to calculate benthic production rates or particulate stocks. The porewater nutrient concentrations measured in vegetated sediments were depleted by a factor of 10–100 compared to bare sediments. The concentrations of NH 4 + , DIP and DIC exhibited a strong vertical zonation reflecting successive layers of intense production or consumption within the root zone often considered and sampled as a homogeneous zone. The deeper root zone showed higher consumption rates of dissolved inorganic nutrients compared to the upper root zone as young roots growing deeper in the sediment played a major role in nutrient plant uptake. A consumption of DIC was consistently recorded in the root zone. We hypothesized that this could result from a transport of CO 2 from roots to leaves supporting photosynthetic activity as suggested for freshwater plants. We pointed out to what extent the influence of seagrasses changed between sparse and dense meadows. This work emphasizes the high spatial variability in biogeochemical processes occurring at small scale within the root zone or between dense and sparse seagrass patches. Such a variability should be considered when dealing with the role of seagrass in biogeochemical cycles, especially in the context of global decline of seagrass.

Sediments are sinks for aquatic pollutants, and analyzing toxicity in such complex matrices is still challenging. To evaluate the toxicity of bioavailable pollutants accumulated in sediments from the Bizerte lagoon (Tunisia), a novel assay, the medaka embryo-larval assay by sediment contact, was applied. Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) embryos were incubated in direct contact with sediment samples up to hatching. Lethal and sublethal adverse effects were recorded in embryos and larvae up to 20 d postfertilization. Results from medaka embryo-larval assay were compared with cytotoxicity (Microtox®), genotoxicity (SOS chromotest), and pollutant content of sediments. The results highlight differences in the contamination profile and toxicity pattern between the different studied sediments. A significant correlation was shown between medaka embryo-larval assay by sediment contact and SOS chromotest responses and concentrations of most organic pollutants studied. No correlation was shown between pollutant levels and Microtox. According to the number of sediment samples detected as toxic, medaka embryo-larval assay by sediment contact was more sensitive than Microtox, which in turn was more sensitive than the SOS chromotest; and medaka embryo-larval assay by sediment contact allowed sediment toxicity assessment of moderately polluted sediments without pollutant extraction and using an ecologically realistic exposure scenario. Although medaka embryo-larval assay by sediment contact should be tested on a larger sample set, the results show that it is sensitive and convenient enough to monitor the toxicity of natural sediments. A detailed characterization project was undertaken by Velan, an international industrial valve designer and manufacturer, in collaboration with the National Research Council of Canada, Boucherville, and Polytechnique Montreal. The purpose was to assess the mechanical and tribological resistances of promising ceramic coatings for hydrometallurgy applications, including a novel n-TiO2-Cr2O3 blend. Hardness and shear strength were determined using microhardness indentation testers and universal tensile testing equipment. Wear resistance of the coatings under sliding wear, abrasion, and galling conditions were measured by standard pin-on-disk tests, abrasion tests, and custom-designed galling tests. The main result is that the synergy between Cr2O3 and n-TiO2 produced abrasion performance exceeding that of these materials alone. Also, an optimized balance between the hard and brittle Cr2O3 phases and the soft and ductile n-TiO2 phases resulted in higher abrasion, sliding, and galling resistance. The novel n-TiO2-Cr2O3 blend is therefore considered as a promising evolution of the current TiO2-Cr2O3 blend.

In cold spray, the interactions between feedstock particles and propellant gas control deposition outcome. The particle impact temperature, along with impact velocity, governs the deposition due to its effect on the impact deformation processes. As bonding mechanisms rely primarily on the particle/substrate plastic flow upon impact, particle impact temperature holds a predominant role in process optimization. The current work studies the effect of pure aluminum particle impact temperature on deposition phenomena when propelled onto a hard steel substrate. Particle impact temperature was varied while achieving the same particle impact velocity, using low and high-pressure cold spray systems. Three different particle diameters are studied, with varying resulting inherent impact temperatures, to provide size dependent insight on deposition/adhesion. Experimental results demonstrate that at low particle impact temperature, i.e. 50 °C, coating adhesion is controlled by in-situ peening. Adhesion shifts to particle in-flight characteristics dependent bonding, i.e. η = V/Vc, as particle temperature increases. At low particle impact temperatures, the coating bond strength increases with increasing in-situ impingement intensity and frequency, i.e. decreasing deposition efficiency with increasing particle size. At higher particle impact temperatures, in-situ peening rate decreases and the adhesion strength increases with decreasing particle size. In addition to affecting the impact process (DE, Vc and adhesion), the particle impact temperature also influences the coating mechanical properties through the creation of temperature-dependent crack propagation mechanisms, i.e. deflection, bridging and acceleration, and of particle-particle structural arrangement related to deformation processes, i.e. fish scale effect and pseudo-plasticity behavior.

In the design of used nuclear fuel containers for deep geological repositories, copper is considered to be a suitable and long-lived barrier for corrosion resistance. The microstructures of state-of-the-art copper materials used in this application produced through extrusion, a grain boundary engineered electrodeposition technique and cold spraying were studied via electron backscattered diffraction. Desirable microstructural characteristics for localized corrosion resistance of pure copper were compiled from the literature considering grain size, grain boundary character distribution, and crystallographic texture. The subject copper materials were found to have favourable microstructures for localized corrosion resistance, in particular, a high fraction of special grain boundaries, especially Σ3 twins, rendering them suitable for the given application.

This paper reports on the performance evaluation of stainless steel (SS) thermal spray coatings aimed at shielding lightweight aluminum (Al) brake rotor disks from excessive heat and providing an adequate tribological surface in contact with brake pads. Coating wear, corrosion and heat resistance performances were evaluated using pin-on-disk, cyclic corrosion tests and thermal cycling using a custom laser rig, respectively. Arc spray optimized coatings displayed lower or equivalent wear rates when compared with the baseline gray cast iron disks, with similar frictional behavior. However, arc spray coating exhibited low adhesion which limits the maximum coating thicknesses achievable and leads to early coating spalling after about 1000 thermal cycles. Arc sprayed coatings also corroded and delaminated under corrosion tests. Optimized cold spray coatings present high corrosion resistance and could resist above 10,000 thermal cycles without spalling. However, cold spray coatings exhibit wear rates at least 4 times those of the cast iron. Taking advantage of both types of coatings, it was found that the production of a duplex coating made of a cold spray bond coat and an arc spray top coat could meet the requirements for protecting Al disks, with near 50% weight reduction., International Thermal Spray Conference 2018, ITSC 2018, May 7-10, 2018, Orlando, FL, USA

International audience; Several studies highlighted the occurrence of circular pools in intertidal flats of different coastal systems and their transient water chemistry over both tidal and diurnal cycles. However, little is known about (1) the response of benthic biogeochemical reactions and fluxes at the sediment-water interface over such short time scales, and (2) the role of these tidal pools in the biogeochemical functioning of coastal systems. Based on in situ microprofiles and water sampling, we investigated the dynamics of dissolved oxygen (O2), nutrients, sulfides and metals, and the associated fluxes at the sediment-water interface in tidal pools from the Arcachon Bay (Atlantic coast of France). Our integrative approach included several tidal and diurnal cycles over two different seasons in the presence and absence of Zostera noltei. The results show that water temperature and light irradiance were the main factors driving the biogeochemical functioning of the tidal pools, as they controlled the physiological activity of the microphytobenthos. Changes in light radiations induced diurnal fluctuations of O2 concentrations within surficial sediment, thus resulting in fluctuations of the O2 diffusive fluxes at the sediment-water interface and of the O2 penetration depth in sediment. At high tide, the increase in turbulence above the sediment induced the advection of oxygenated water within the first millimeters of sediment, resulting in a significant increase in porewater O2 concentrations and sediment O2 penetration depth. Porewater sulfide concentrations and apparition depth were concomitant with the O2 dynamic over both diurnal and tidal cycles, indicating that intermediate redox diagenetic processes were impacted by O2 dynamic over such short time-scale. The rapid changes in redox processes in the sediment column are confirmed by a significant flux of dissolved manganese toward the water column during nighttime. The consumption of nitrate and the release of ammonium and phosphate, associated to the mineralization of the organic matter in the surface sediment did not appeared related however to such short time cycles. The efflux of dissolved silica from the sediment was most likely associated with the enhanced dissolution of Si-bearing particles in surface sediment at higher temperatures, although silica uptake by Z. noltei was also noted. This study clearly shows that tidal pools function as natural incubators of transient biogeochemical processes. A rough assessment of the nutrient budget at the scale of the bay indicates the tidal pools may contribute significantly to the biogeochemical functioning of Arcachon Bay.

We investigate the carbon dynamics in Guanabara Bay, an eutrophic tropical coastal embayment surrounded by the megacity of Rio de Janeiro (southeast coast of Brazil). Nine sampling campaigns were conducted for dissolved, particulate and total organic carbon (DOC, POC and TOC), dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2), chlorophyll a (Chl a), pheo-pigments and ancillary parameters. Highest DOC, POC and Chl a concentrations were found in confined-shallow regions of the bay during the summer period with strong pCO2 undersaturation, and DOC reached 82 mg L−1, POC 152 mg L−1, and Chl a 800 μg L−1. Spatially and temporally, POC and DOC concentrations varied positively with total pigments, and negatively with DIC. Strong linear correlations between these parameters indicate that the production of TOC translates to an equivalent uptake in DIC, with 85% of the POC and about 50% of the DOC being of phytoplanktonic origin. Despite the shallow depths of the bay, surface waters were enriched in POC and DOC relative to bottom waters in periods of high thermohaline stratification. The seasonal accumulation of phytoplankton-derived TOC in the surface waters reached about 105 g C m−2 year−1, representing between 8 and 40% of the net primary production. The calculated turnover time of organic carbon was 117 and 34 days during winter and summer, respectively. Our results indicate that eutrophication of coastal bays in the tropics can generate large stocks of planktonic biomass and detrital organic carbon which are permanently being produced and partially degraded and buried in sediments.

Export of soil carbon to superficial water through the drainage of groundwater is a significant but poorly documented component of the continental carbon budget. We monitored the concentrations of dissolved organic and inorganic carbon (DOC and DIC) in groundwaters and first order streams of a small temperate, forested and sandy watershed where hydrology occurs exclusively through drainage (no surface runoff). The studied watershed was also implemented for continuous measurements of groundwater table, precipitation, evapotranspiration, river discharge, and net ecosystem exchanges of sensible and latent heat fluxes as well as CO2. On a monthly basis, we found a good consistency between precipitation and the sum of evapotranspiration, drainage and groundwater storage. DOC and DIC temporary storage in groundwater and export to streams varied drastically during the hydrological cycle, the residence times of these two carbon forms varying from one month to several years. DOC concentrations in groundwater and streams were maximal at high water table and high stream discharge, when the water table reached the superficial organic rich layer of the soil. A large fraction of this winter DOC maximum was temporarily stored and further mineralized to DIC in the groundwater and only about 15 % was exported to streams during winter periods. In contrast, DIC, which was present in majority in the form of dissolved CO2 in groundwater and streams, was apparently diluted at high water table: DIC concentrations were maximum at low water table and low discharge in late summer and maximum pCO2 in groundwater corresponded to the late summer period of heterotrophic conditions (i.e., Reco > GPP). Groundwater DIC peaked in late summer and was followed by a rapid loss of excess CO2 from stream surface to the atmosphere. Overall, mean carbon export was 7.5 g C m−2 yr−1 (50 % as DOC and 50 % as DIC) and represented only 1.5 % of the NEE. About 65 % of the DIC exported from groundwaters returned to the atmosphere in the form of CO2 in first order streams.

Wave and tide dominated beaches are composed of medium to coarse sandy sediments depleted in organic matter. In these sediments, the availability of organic matter limits benthic heterotrophic respiration processes. This study shows that oxygen consumption linked with nutrient recycling occurs in sands and that the intensity of this process follows a seasonal pattern. Furthermore, substantial seawater exchange occurs through intertidal sandy sediments during each tide. During floods, seawater penetrates sandy sediments, filling the pore spaces with dissolved oxygen and marine organic matter. Water expelled from the sediment during ebb is depleted in oxygen and enriched in nitrate. In order to quantify the extent of respiration processes, we collected pore waters at low tide on tidal cross-shore transects on the Truc Vert beach (France) every two weeks over 20 months. Temperature, salinity and oxygen saturation were recorded in situ and nutrient concentrations were determined from collected samples. The seasonal monitoring showed that aerobic respiration occurred in sands. Organic matter supplied by the seawater entering the pore spaces during floods was trapped long enough to be mineralized. An efficient recycling of nutrients was thus found to occur in tidal sandy beaches. The intensity of the respiration processes varied seasonally. The strongest oxygen depletions occurred in spring, when planktonic organic matter was abundant, as well as in summer when we observed occasional denitrification. Nitrate concentration of recycled seeping seawater reached values up to 40 μM. According to our calculations, the 240-km-long Aquitanian beach recycles 3500 t of carbon and releases 600 t of N-nitrate to the adjacent coastal zone each year. Since phosphorus is readily adsorbed on particles, the N:P ratio of recycled nutrients released to the seawater was much higher than the Redfield ratio.

The dynamics of the aragonite saturation state (Ωarag) were investigated in the eutrophic coastal waters of Guanabara Bay (RJ-Brazil). Large phytoplankton blooms stimulated by a high nutrient enrichment promoted the production of organic matter with strong uptake of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in surface waters, lowering the concentrations of dissolved carbon dioxide (CO2aq), and increasing the pH, Ωarag and carbonate ion (CO32 −), especially during summer. The increase of Ωarag related to biological activity was also evident comparing the negative relationship between the Ωarag and the apparent utilization of oxygen (AOU), with a very close behavior between the slopes of the linear regression and the Redfield ratio. The lowest values of Ωarag were found at low-buffered waters in regions that receive direct discharges from domestic effluents and polluted rivers, with episodic evidences of corrosive waters (Ωarag < 1). This study showed that the eutrophication controlled the variations of Ωarag in Guanabara Bay.

Chromium carbide-based thermally sprayed coatings are widely used for high temperature wear applications. In these extreme environments at those temperatures, several phenomena will degrade, oxidize and change the microstructure of the coatings, thereby affecting their wear behaviour. Although it can be easily conceived that the Cr3C2-NiCr coating microstructure evolution after high temperature exposure will depend on the as-sprayed microstructure and spraying parameters, very little has been done in this regard. This study intends to develop a better understanding of the effect of spraying parameters on the resulting chromium carbide coating microstructure after high temperature operation and high temperature sliding wear properties. The microstructures of different coatings produced from two morphologies of Cr3C2-NiCr powders and under a window of in-flight particle temperature and velocity values were characterized through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Sliding wear at 800°C was performed and the wear behaviour correlated to the spraying parameters and coating microstructure. We measured spatial and temporal variations in carbon concentrations, isotopic compositions and exports during a complete hydrological cycle in nine watercourses draining a lowland forested podzolized catchment, flowing into the Arcachon lagoon (France). In addition, integrated fluxes of CO2 across the water-atmosphere interface were estimated to assess the relative importance of CO2 evasion versus lateral carbon transport at the catchment scale. Watercourse similarities and specificities linked to the local catchment characteristics are discussed and compared with other riverine systems. Low concentrations of suspended particulate matter and particulate organic carbon (POC) were generally measured in all the watercourses (8. 4 ± 3. 4 and 1. 6 ± 0. 6 mg L-1, respectively), reflecting limited mechanical soil erosion. The generally high POC content in the suspended matter (20 %), low Chl a concentrations (1. 3 ± 1. 4 μg L-1) and the relatively constant δ13C-POC value (near -28 ‰) throughout the year reveal this POC originates from terrestrial C3 plant and soil detritus. The presence of podzols leads to high levels of dissolved organic carbon (DOC; 6. 6 ± 2. 2 mg L-1). Similarly, high dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentrations were measured in the Arcachon lagoon catchment (5. 9 ± 2. 2 mg L-1). The δ13C-DIC value around -20 ‰ throughout the year in many small watercourses reveals the predominance of terrestrial carbon mineralisation and silicate rock weathering in soils as the major DIC source. With pCO2 between 1,000 and 10,000 ppmv, all watercourses were a source of CO2 to the atmosphere, particularly during the low river stage. Organic carbon parameters remained relatively stable throughout the year, whereas DIC parameters showed strong seasonal contrasts closely linked to the hydrological regime and hyporheic flows. This work studied the impact of a small estuary (a 4 km-long estuary, at the interface between the Leyre River and the Arcachon lagoon, SW France) with a short flushing time on continental nutrient loads to a coastal lagoon. While large estuaries are known to modify the nutrient load of rivers to the coast, the impact on continental fluxes of a short salinity gradient from small coastal rivers is rarely studied. A survey of nutrient and dissolved organic matter concentration, particulate phosphorus speciation and particulate organic matter (POM) concentration and characteristics (C:N ratio and particulate organic carbon δ 13 C) showed that the estuarine behaviour varied throughout the year. The autochthonous primary production was a sink of dissolved N, P and Si in spring. During this period, the continental load of dissolved nitrogen was reduced by about 1/3 and phosphorus was totally consumed by estuarine processes. Nutrient recycling occurred in summer with ammonium production although this source was low in comparison with continental fluxes of nitrogen. The phosphorus concentration was dominated by the iron oxides-bound fraction. Contrary to large estuaries, the desorption of particulate phosphorus was not a source of dissolved phosphorus. Our results showed that estuarine processes impacted the net nutrient fluxes during productive periods, although estuarine residence time was very short. Passive transport with conservative mixing of nutrient was observed in autumn and winter. The non-conservative behaviour of small estuaries must be taken into account for nutrient mass balance calculation in lagoon.

Quantitative X-ray microanalysis models, such as ZAF or φ(ρz) methods, are normally based on solid, flat-polished specimens. This limits their use in various domains where porous materials are studied, such as powder metallurgy, catalysts, foams, etc. Previous experimental studies have shown that an increase in porosity leads to a deficit in X-ray emission for various materials, such as graphite, Cr2O3, CuO, ZnS (Ichinokawa et al., '69), Al2O3, and Ag (Lakis et al., '92). However, the mechanisms responsible for this decrease are unclear. The porosity by itself does not explain the loss in intensity, other mechanisms have therefore been proposed, such as extra energy loss by the diffusion of electrons by surface plasmons generated at the pores–solid interfaces, surface roughness, extra charging at the pores–solid interface, or carbon diffusion in the pores. However, the exact mechanism is still unclear. In order to better understand the effects of porosity on quantitative microanalysis, a new approach using Monte Carlo simulations was developed by Gauvin (2005) using a constant pore size. In this new study, the X-ray emissions model was modified to include a random log normal distribution of pores size in the simulated materials. This article presents, after a literature review of the previous works performed about X-ray microanalysis of porous materials, some of the results obtained with Gauvin's modified model. We have studied 15 catchments supplying freshwater to a French Atlantic coastal lagoon, where increase in nitrogen loads due to agriculture is supposed to have destabilized the ecosystem in the last decades. The catchment is a lowland composed of Pleistocene sands with an average slope of 0.25%. To study the nutrient export in relation to land-use surface waters were sampled bi-weekly between October 2006 and January 2009 and land-use was established by plane photographs and Geographic Information System (GIS). Cultivated pine forests represent more than 80% of the total surface and 7% of the catchment area has been deforested recently. Significant areas of some catchments are used for maize crop. Housing is confined to the coastal zone. Maize and forest crop give a robust signature in terms of nitrate export. In view of modeling the nutrient fluxes, we have established the mean export rate for every land-use: forested parcels, deforested parcels, cultivated surfaces, and housing areas export 45, 93, 2850, and 61 kg N-nitrate km(-2) year(-1), respectively. Exports of ammonium, dissolved organic N (DON), and dissolved inorganic P (DIP) could not be related to land use. The mean export is 13, 100, and 0.57 kg km(-2) year(-1) for N-ammonium, DON, and DIP, respectively. The modeling of nitrogen flux is in good agreement with our measures for the largest catchment, which supplies about 90% of the total continental DIN flux. However, small catchments are more dynamic due to hydrological conditions and the model is less accurate. This work has permitted to complete and unify scattered studies about nutrient cycling in this area. Thus we have established and compared the nitrogen budget of cornfields and cultivated pine forest. We have emphasized that (i) fertilizer use should be reduced in cornfields because they stock between 200 and 6400 kg DIN km(-2) year(-1), and (ii) the nitrogen budget in pine forest mostly depends on tree harvesting and symbiotic N-fixation, which is poorly constrained. Export of N by rivers represents a small contribution to the N budget of soils.

The structural evolution of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) during mechanical milling was investigated using SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS and Raman spectroscopy. The study showed that milling of the CNTs alone introduces defects but preserves the tubular structure. When milling the CNTs with aluminum (Al) powder in order to produce a composite, Raman spectroscopy has shown that most of the nanotubes are destroyed. During sintering of the CNT/Al milled mixture, the carbon atoms available from the destruction of the nanotubes react with the Al to form aluminum carbide (Al4C3). The effect of milling on the Al matrix was also studied.

Sandy sediments of continental shelves and most beaches are often thought of as geochemical deserts because they are usually poor in organic matter and other reactive substances. The present study focuses on analyses of dissolved biogenic compounds of surface seawater and pore waters of Aquitanian coastal beach sediments. To quantitatively assess the biogeochemical reactions, we collected pore waters at low tide on tidal cross-shore transects unaffected by freshwater inputs. We recorded temperature, salinity, oxygen saturation state, and nutrient concentrations. These parameters were compared to the values recorded in the seawater entering the interstitial environment during floods. Cross-shore topography and position of piezometric level at low tide were obtained from kinematics GPS records. Residence time of pore waters was estimated by a tracer approach, using dissolved silica concentration and kinetics estimate of quartz dissolution with seawater. Kinetics parameters were based on dissolved silica concentration monitoring during 20-day incubations of sediment with seawater. We found that seawater that entered the sediment during flood tides remained up to seven tidal cycles within the interstitial environment. Oxygen saturation of seawater was close to 100%, whereas it was as low as 80% in pore waters. Concentrations of dissolved nutrients were higher in pore waters than in seawater. These results suggest that aerobic respiration occurred in the sands. We propose that mineralised organic matter originated from planktonic material that infiltrated the sediment with water during flood tides. Therefore, the sandy tidal sediment of the Aquitanian coast is a biogeochemical reactor that promotes or accelerates remineralisation of coastal pelagic primary production. Mass balance calculations suggest that this single process supplies about 37 kmol of nitrate and 1.9 kmol of dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) to the 250-km long Aquitanian coast during each semi-diurnal tidal cycle. It represents about 1.5% of nitrate and 5% of DIP supplied by the nearest estuary.

Cold spray deposition was evaluated for the production of inert anodes for Al electrolysis from mechanically alloyed Cu−Ni−Fe powders. Cu65Ni20Fe15 (in wt. %) alloy was first prepared from elemental Cu, Ni, Fe powders using an attritor. After 40 h of milling, a nanocrystalline and monophasic Cu(Ni,Fe) solid solution was formed. It was shown that the particle size of the milled powder can be controlled with the addition of stearic acid to the initial powder mixture. In a second step, the cold spray parameters (pressure and temperature of the carrier N2 gas) were optimized in order to maximize the impact velocity of the Cu65Ni20Fe15 particles on the substrate. Then, thick (1100 μm), dense (porosity of 1− 2 %) and adherent (adhesion strength of 15 MPa) coatings of Cu65Ni20Fe15 on C63000 substrate (copper aluminium bronze alloy) were produced.
