- Abstract
The Research Alliance for New York City Schools is committed to conducting rigorous, non-partisan research studies on topics that matter to the city's public schools. One of the core functions of the Research Alliance is to conduct research in collaboration with other researchers at NYU, at other universities, and at other organizations across the city and country. Building diverse research teams enables authors to conduct the highest quality studies with multi-disciplinary experts that reflect the complexity of challenges in education. While independent of the New York City Department of Education (DOE), the Research Alliance also works with DOE to identify important questions for research and to provide valid and reliable evidence to help solve problems and build capacity in schools throughout NYC. Recently, the authors have begun collaborating with the Department on the evaluation of a district-wide led initiative designed to improve the college and career readiness for young men of color. This panel will highlight the opportunities and challenges of their partnership as well as the operational and political realities of working with the city's schools. By using this particular evaluation as an anchor, their research team and the project's director at the DOE will present their process for site selection and recruitment; data collection and analysis; as well as reporting and dissemination of results to inform the development of the initiative. 4. The Pawlet Project: Applications of Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligence Theory in a Rural Vermont Elementary School.
- Author
-
Duval, John and Mark, Nancy
- Abstract
This paper focuses on the use of Gardner's (1985) Multiple Intelligence Theory (MIT) in the restructuring of the curriculum at elementary schools in Pawlet, Vermont. It discusses the state of education in Vermont, the need to restructure and improve assessment at the Pawlet schools, and the adoption of MIT to further this goal. The bulk of the paper consists of a lesson plan for an integrated unit of study that culminated in an all-school field trip to a nearby farm. The unit included linguistic, logical/math, visual/spatial, musical, kinesthetic, interpersonal, and intrapersonal activities. A teacher questionnaire on MIT, along with representative answers, is included. (MDM)

In 1978 Cardinal Albino Luciani was elected Pope at Rome andchose as his papal, public name John Paul I. Immediately afterwards, a volume of the new Pope’s essays was published with the title Illustrissimi, for the illustrious saints and scholars, fictional characters and writers (such as Mark Twain, Francesco Petrarca, and Gioachino Belli) whom Cardinal Luciani had addressed and imaginatively conversed with in each of these essays.Trilussa was one of only three Italian poets whom the Pope, that is, Albino Luciani, addressed in his book. The other two were Petrarca and Gioachino Belli, a poet who, like Trilussa, wrote not in standard Italian, but in Romanesco, the modern dialect of Rome. However, Luciani’s essay “To Trilussa: In the Heart of the Mystery,” reveals a misinterpretation of Trilussa’s thirteen-line poem “La Guida,” which he used as a springboard to discuss what Christian faith is and what it is not.In this essay, DuVal translates Trilussa's Romanesco poem into English and discusses its analysis and meaning, points out the echoes of Dante in the poem, as well as addressing why Pope Luciani may have misinterpreted it, while at the same time honouring with the attention he devotes to it in his essay.

6. Portraits of Teacher Dedication in Vermont.

- Abstract
Dedication and commitment are useful terms to apply when discussing teacher quality and excellence, especially in rural contexts. A two-stage case study examined archival data on teachers and teaching in Vermont and northern New England and interviewed 12 outstanding rural teachers from low income districts throughout Vermont. The teaching experience of interviewees spanned six decades from the 1930s to the 1980s. Results were used to generate a profile of a committed or dedicated teacher. Such a teacher: (1) might describe teaching in terms of a calling or mission; (2) continues to teach as rewards diminish; (3) exhibits enthusiasm and devotion in the face of adversity; (4) embraces the service mission of teaching; (5) holds detailed abstract concepts about teaching as a profession; (6) can reflect on own teaching; (7) can link personal mission in life to organizational mission; (8) expresses concern for fellow teachers and students; and (9) expends above average amounts of time and energy at work. Teacher time and wealth spent could provide quantifiable measures of teacher commitment and dedication. Outstanding and excellent Vermont teachers of all eras have spent their own money and given great quantities of discretionary time to their students in support of improving education. 8. Dedication/Commitment: A Study of Their Relationship in Teaching Excellence.
- Author

Duval, John H. and Carlson, Robert V.
- Abstract
This paper describes a two-stage case study of teachers and teaching between 1830 and 1988 in Vermont, with particular attention to rural environments. The preponderance of data were in the form of diaries, letters, various types of printed records, monographs, and the transcripts of numerous interviews and conversations. The central purpose of the study was to investigate the nature of commitment and dedication and how these characteristics were manifested in the professional lives of teachers from different periods in time. Based on this study and the results it produced, it seems appropriate to advance the theory that outstanding teachers evidence commitment and dedication as preeminent characteristics of their work ethic or profession. These qualities are not gender specific. Measures of the existence of commitment and dedication include expenses of personal time and personal income. Commitment and dedication are present in mature teachers, suggesting the developmental quality of this attitude. (IAH)

- Abstract
The document examines the connection of commitment and dedication to excellence in teaching, and the extent to which their intensity can be measured as variables. The study expands the knowledge base of 19th and early 20th century teaching by discovering and documenting examples in the historical literature of dedication and commitment. The connection of commitment and dedication to teaching excellence today and in the recent past as evidenced in the lives of Vermont teachers is identified. A description of dedication and commitment in a population of Vermont teachers in the 100-year period from 1830 to 1930. Findings indicate that these qualities would be most evident not only in rural settings but also in rural settings where economic rewards were below average. Teachers in the sample spend a significant amount of time in school and are involved in school-related activities beyond the context of the work day. Teachers responded that they were spending their own money on their classes or their students. (79 references) (SI)

vol. 76 no. 15, Last Friday the faculty presented a check for $5,000 to the United Fund Drive. On behalf of the faculty, Dr. Robert V. Guthrie, center, presented the donation to Quintin Hicks, left, representing the United Fund. The faculty drew this money from a fund they set aside by deducting a certain percentage monthly from their pay checks. Money from this fund also is used for other worthy projects. Head of arrangements from the disbursement of this fund is David Readdick, shown at the above right. Other members of the committee include Rev. Francis Luce and Dr. Derrell Roberts. This fund began in the days when the late Ludd M. Spivey, president emeritus of Florida Southern, was in office. This year the donation to the United Fund increased by $200 over last year's $4,800. (p. 1). Hail The Faculty (p. 2). FSC Senior Sonny Overton, left, student pastor at Eaton Park Methodist Church, is shown with the Rev. R. Eugene Rutland, pastor of College Heights Methodist Church and president of the Lakeland Ministerial Association, discussing plans for Clergy Week which began Feb. 3.
