The angular-momentum distribution of classical Cepheids in the outer Milky Way disc is bi-modal with a gap at $L_\mathrm{gap}=2950\,\mathrm{km}\,\mathrm{s}^{-1}\,\mathrm{kpc}$, corresponding to $R=13\,\mathrm{kpc}$, while no similar feature has been found in the general population of disc stars. We show that star formation in multiple spiral arm segments at the same azimuth leads to such multi-modality which quickly dissolves and only shows in young stars. Unlike other explanations, such as a 1:1 orbital resonance with the Galactic bar, this also accounts for the observed steepening of the stellar warp at $L_\mathrm{gap}$, since the adjacent spiral arms represent different parts of the warped gas disc. In this scenario the gap is clearly present only in young stars, as observed, while most purely stellar dynamical origins would affect all disc populations, including older disc stars., 6 pages, 7 figures, submitted to MNRAS

In particular, we show how key properties of the Solar vicinity can be obtained by secular evolution, with no need for external or special events, like galaxy mergers or paucity in star formation. This concerns the long established double-branch behaviour of [alpha/Fe] versus metallicity and the recently found non-monotonic evolution of the stellar abundance gradient, evaluated at the birth radii of stars. We extend the discussion to other abundance ratios and we suggest a classification scheme, based on the nature of the corresponding yields (primary versus secondary or odd elements) and on the lifetimes of their sources (short-lived versus long-lived ones). The latter property is critical in determining the single- or double- branch behaviour of an elementary abundance ratio in the Solar neighbourhood. We underline the high diagnostic potential of this finding, which can help to separate clearly elements with sources evolving on different time-scales and help determining the site of e.g. the r-process(es). We define the ‘abundance distance’ between the thin and thick disc sequences as an important element for such a separation. Aims. Periodic orbits (POs) have been exhaustively studied. On the contrary, to our knowledge, no complete and systematic study of higher-multiplicity (ℳ) POs, that is, orbits that close after more than one revolution in phase space, exists. Here, we fill this gap and also extend the standard tools used for studies of the x1 POs to studies of higher multiplicity POs. Methods. We adopted a multi-aspect approach, using surfaces of section, stability diagrams, characteristic diagrams, studies of the shapes of individual orbits, and other properties of the POs. We modified and extended the standard tools used for ℳ = 1, to ℳ > 1 cases, allowing them to use the snapshot information more fully. Our potential is more realistic than those of most previous studies, as it is obtained directly from a snapshot of a fully self-consistent, high-resolution numerical simulation. Results. We find five main pairs of PO families with ℳ = 2. Two of these bifurcate from the x1 family and are direct rotators, and one bifurcates from the x4 family and rotates retrograde. We suggest that the remaining families do not bifurcate, but form parts of bubbles. The POs of the x1 family have four-fold symmetry, while all the ℳ = 2 POs have only two-fold symmetry, with respect to either the x or the y axis. Furthermore, two orbits of the same Jacobi constant and from families of the same PO pair are mirror images of each other. Thus, by considering them together, it is possible to achieve four-fold symmetry. All results obtained here will be used in a following paper to study the effect of including ℳ orbits in the disc. We also show that a given family can include orbits of more than one multiplicity.

The Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies (S$^{4}$G) is a detailed study of over 2300 nearby galaxies in the near-infrared (NIR), which has been critical to our understanding of the detailed structures of nearby galaxies. Because the sample galaxies were selected only using radio-derived velocities, however, the survey favored late-type disk galaxies over lenticulars and ellipticals. A follow-up Spitzer survey was conducted to rectify this bias, adding 465 early-type galaxies (ETGs) to the original sample, to be analyzed in a manner consistent with the initial survey. We present the data release of this ETG extension, up to the third data processing pipeline (P3): surface photometry. We produce curves of growth and radial surface brightness profiles (with and without inclination corrections) using reduced and masked Spitzer IRAC 3.6$\mu$m and 4.5$\mu$m images produced through Pipelines 1 and 2, respectively. From these profiles, we derive the following integrated quantities: total magnitudes, stellar masses, concentration parameters, and galaxy size metrics. We showcase NIR scaling relations for ETGs among these quantities. We examine general trends across the whole S$^{4}$G and ETG extension among our derived parameters, highlighting differences between ETGs and late-type galaxies (LTGs). ETGs are, on average, more massive and more concentrated than LTGs, and also show subtle distinctions among ETG morphological sub-types. We also derive the following scaling relations and compare with previous results in visible light: mass--size (both half-light and isophotal), mass--concentration, mass--surface brightness (central, effective, and within 1 kpc), and mass--color. We find good agreement with previous works, though some relations (e.g., mass--central surface brightness) will require more careful multi-component decompositions to be fully understood., Comment: 25 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We analyse the distribution of Mira variable stars in the central region of the Milky Way. We find that with increasing period, i.e. decreasing age, the Miras shift towards negative Galactic longitudes $\ell$. Comparing to a cosmological zoom simulation of a barred galaxy, we find that this shift with age can be explained by an age-morphology dependence of the boxy peanut/bulge. Owing to a combination of projection effects and the limitation of the range of Galactic longitudes, the near hump at $\ell>0$ is more truncated for younger populations, and the far hump at $\ell, 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted to MNRAS

Recently, many orbital studies in barred galaxy potentials have revealed the existence of orbits which are not trapped around x1 tree orbits, but could be potentially appropriate building blocks for bars. These findings question the uniqueness of the x1 family as the standard paradigm of orbital motion in galactic bars. The main goal of this paper is to investigate the role that such orbits could play in shaping the morphology of bars. We trace the morphological patterns appearing in the face-on and edge-on views of the non-periodic orbits presented in these studies and we show that they are introduced in the system by second type bifurcations of x1. For this purpose, we use a typical 3D Ferrers bar model and follow the radial and vertical bifurcations of the x1 family considered as being multi periodic, with multi = 2, 3, 5. The variation of the stability indices of x1 in the multi = 2, 3 cases give us also the four- and six- periodic orbits, respectively. We tabulate these orbits including all information necessary to assess their role as appropriate building blocks. We discuss their stability and their extent, as well as their size and morphological evolution, as a function of energy. We conclude that even the most important of the multi-periodic orbits presented in Tables 2 to 5 are less appropriate building blocks for bars than the families of the x1 tree at the same energy., 20 pages, 16 figures, 4 tables with small figures, published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

We analyse the positions of RR Lyrae stars in the central region of the Milky Way. In addition to the overall bar shape detected previously, we find evidence for a peanut shaped structure, in form of overdensities near $\ell=-2$ deg and $1$ deg at $b\sim-3.5$ deg. The corresponding physical distance between the two peaks of the peanut is $\sim0.7$ kpc, significantly shorter than that found from near-IR images (3.3 kpc) and red-clump stars. Qualitatively this is expected from `fractionation' of bar orbits, which we demonstrate to be matched in a simulation of an inside-out growing disc subsequently forming a bar., 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted to MNRAS

We analyze the kinematics and spatial distribution of 15,599 fundamental-mode RR Lyrae (RRL) stars in the Milky Way bulge by combining OGLE-IV photometric data and Gaia DR2 proper motions. We show that the longitudinal proper motions and the line-of-sight velocities can give similar results for the rotation in the Galactic central regions. The angular velocity of bulge RRLs is found to be around $35$ km s$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-1}$, significantly smaller than that for the majority of bulge stars ($50-60$ km s$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-1}$); bulge RRLs have larger velocity dispersion (120$-$140 km s$^{-1}$) than younger stars. The dependence of the kinematics of the bulge RRLs on their metallicities is shown by their rotation curves and spatial distributions. Metal-poor RRLs ([Fe/H], Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures. Warps are common features in both stellar and gaseous disks of nearby spiral galaxies with the latter usually easier to detect. Several theories have been proposed in the literature to explain their formation and prevalence, including tidal interactions with external galaxies. Observational correlations also suggest the importance of tides for warp formation. Here, we use the TNG100 run from the magnetohydrodynamical cosmological simulation suite IllustrisTNG to investigate the connection between interactions and the formation of gas warps. We find that in the sample of well-resolved gas-rich spiral galaxies ($10^{10}\lesssim\mathrm{M_{*}/M_{\odot}}\lesssim10^{11}$ at $z=0$) from the simulation TNG100-1, about $16\%$ possess the characteristic S-shaped warp. Around one third of these objects have their vertical morphology induced by interactions with other galaxies. Half of these interactions end with the perturber absorbed by the host. Warps formed in interactions are more asymmetrical than the remaining sample, however after the interaction the asymmetry decreases with time. Aims. The orbital structure of galaxies is strongly influenced by the accuracy of the force calculation during orbit integration. We explore the accuracy of force calculations for two expansion methods and determine which one is preferable for orbit integration. Methods. We specifically compare two methods, one was introduced by Hernquist \& Ostriker (HO), which uses a spherical coordinate system and was built specifically for the Hernquist model, and the other by Vasiliev \& Athanassoula (CylSP) has a cylindrical coordinate system. Our comparisons include the Dehnen profile, its triaxial extension (of which the Hernquist profile is a special case) and a multicomponent system including a bar and disk density distributions for both analytical models and $N$-body realizations.We specifically compare two methods, one was introduced by Hernquist \& Ostriker (HO), which uses a spherical coordinate system and was built specifically for the Hernquist model, and the other by Vasiliev \& Athanassoula (CylSP) has a cylindrical coordinate system. Our comparisons include the Dehnen profile, its triaxial extension (of which the Hernquist profile is a special case) and a multicomponent system including a bar and disk density distributions for both analytical models and $N$-body realizations. Results. For the generalized Dehnen density, the CylSP method is more accurate than the HO method for nearly all inner power-law indices and shapes at all radii. For $N$-body realizations of the Dehnen model, or snapshots of an $N$-body simulation, the CylSP method is more accurate than the HO method in the central region for the oblate, prolate, and triaxial Hernquist profiles if the particle number is more than $5\times 10^5$. We explore the cosmic evolution of the bar length, strength, and light deficit around the bar for 379 barred galaxies at 0.2 < z $\leq$ 0.835 using F814W images from the COSMOS survey. Our sample covers galaxies with stellar mass 10.0 $\leq$ log(M*/Msun) $\leq$ 11.4 and various Hubble types. The bar length is strongly related to the galaxy mass, the disk scale length (h), R50, and R90, where the last two are the radii containing 50 and 90% of total stellar mass, respectively. Bar length remains almost constant, suggesting little or no evolution in bar length over the last 7 Gyrs. The normalized bar lengths (Rbar/h, Rbar/R50, and Rbar/R90) do not show any clear cosmic evolution. Also, the bar strength (A2 and Qb) and the light deficit around the bar reveal little or no cosmic evolution. The constancy of the normalized bar lengths over cosmic time implies that the evolution of bars and of disks is strongly linked over all times. We discuss our results in the framework of predictions from numerical simulations. We use hydrodynamical simulations of a Cartwheel-like ring galaxy, modelled as a nearly head-on collision of a small companion with a larger disc galaxy, to probe the evolution of the gaseous structures and flows, and to explore the physical conditions setting the star formation activity. Star formation is first quenched by tides as the companion approaches, before being enhanced shortly after the collision. The ring ploughs the disc material as it radially extends, and almost simultaneously depletes its stellar and gaseous reservoir into the central region, through the spokes, and finally dissolve 200 Myr after the collision. Most of star formation first occurs in the ring before this activity is transferred to the spokes and then the nucleus. We thus propose that the location of star formation traces the dynamical stage of ring galaxies, and could help constrain their star formation histories. The ring hosts tidal compression associated with strong turbulence. This compression yields an azimuthal asymmetry, with maxima reached in the side furthest away from the nucleus, which matches the star formation activity distribution in our models and in observed ring systems. The interaction triggers the formation of star clusters significantly more massive than before the collision, but less numerous than in more classical galaxy interactions. The peculiar geometry of Cartwheel-like objects thus yields a star (cluster) formation activity comparable to other interacting objects, but with notable second order differences in the nature of turbulence, the enhancement of the star formation rate, and the number of massive clusters formed., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Bars in disc-dominated galaxies are able to drive gas inflow inside the corotation radius, thus enhancing the central star formation rate (SFR). Previous work, however, has found that disc-dominated galaxies with centrally suppressed SFR frequently host a bar. Here we investigate possible causes for the suppression of central SFR in such cases. We compare physical properties of a sample of disc-dominated barred galaxies with high central SFR (HC galaxies) with those of a sample of disc-dominated barred galaxies with low central SFR (LC galaxies). We find that the two samples have on average similar HI content and bars of similar strength. But we also find that the HCs have bluer colors than LCs, and that outside the bar region they host stronger spiral arms than the LCs where closed rings are more often seen. We discuss and evaluate the possible causes for the suppression of the central SFR in the LC galaxies as opposed to its enhancement in the HC galaxies., Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Square Kilometre Array: et al., arXiv:1810.02680v3, The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is a planned large radio interferometer designed to operate over a wide range of frequencies, and with an order of magnitude greater sensitivity and survey speed than any current radio telescope. The SKA will address many important topics in astronomy, ranging from planet formation to distant galaxies. However, in this work, we consider the perspective of the SKA as a facility for studying physics. We review four areas in which the SKA is expected to make major contributions to our understanding of fundamental physics: cosmic dawn and reionisation; gravity and gravitational radiation; cosmology and dark energy; and dark matter and astroparticle physics. These discussions demonstrate that the SKA will be a spectacular physics machine, which will provide many new breakthroughs and novel insights on matter, energy, and spacetime., A. The MaNGA project has obtained IFU data for several thousand nearby galaxies, including barred galaxies. With the two dimensional spectral and kinematic information provided by IFUs, we can measure the pattern speed of a barred galaxy, which determines the bar dynamics. We apply the non-parametric method proposed by Tremaine \& Weinberg to estimate the bar pattern speed for 53 barred galaxies, making this the largest sample studied so far in this way. Our sample is selected from the MaNGA first public data release as part of SDSS Data Release 13 according mainly to the axis ratio and position angle difference between the bar and disc, while kinematic data is from the later SDSS Data Release 14. We have used both the photometric position angle from the photometric image and the kinematic position angle from the stellar velocity map to derive the pattern speed. Combining three independent bar length measurements and the circular velocity from Jeans Anisotropic modelling (JAM), we also determine the dimensionless ratio $\cal{R}$ of the corotation radius to the bar length. We find that the galaxy's position angle is the main uncertainty in determining the bar pattern speed. The kinematic position angle leads to fewer ultrafast bars than the photometric position angle, and this could be due to the method of measuring the kinematic position angle. We study the dependence of $\cal{R}$ values on galaxy properties such as the dark matter fraction from JAM modelling and the stellar age and metallicity from stellar population synthesis (SPS). A positive correlation between the bar length and bar strength is found: the longer the bar, the stronger the bar. However, no other significant correlations are found. This may result from errors in deriving the $\cal{R}$ values or from the complex formation and slowdown processes of galactic bars., 27 pages, 21 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We investigate how the properties of spiral arms relate to other fundamental galaxy properties. To this end, we use previously published measurements of those properties, and our own measurements of arm-interarm luminosity contrasts for a large sample of galaxies, using 3.6$\mu$m images from the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies. Flocculent galaxies are clearly distinguished from other spiral arm classes, especially by their lower stellar mass and surface density. Multi-armed and grand-design galaxies are similar in most of their fundamental parameters, excluding some bar properties and the bulge-to-total luminosity ratio. Based on these results, we discuss dense, classical bulges as a necessary condition for standing spiral wave modes in grand-design galaxies. We show how wet major mergers can create disc galaxies in a cosmological context, using the Illustris simulation. We select a sample of 38 disc galaxies having experienced a major merger in their history with no subsequent significant minor merger, and study how they transform into discs after the merger. In agreement with what was previously found in controlled simulations of such mergers, we find that their disc is built gradually from young stars formed after the merger in the disc region, while the old stars born before the merger form an ellipsoidal component. Focusing on one fiducial case from our sample, we show how the gas was initially dispersed in the halo region right after the merger, but is then accreted onto a disc to form stars, and builds the disc component. We then select a sample of major mergers creating elliptical galaxies, to show that those cases correspond mainly to dry mergers, where the lack of star formation prevents the formation of a disc in the remnant galaxy. The amount of gas in the remnant galaxy after the merger is therefore essential to determine the final outcome of a major merger., 14 pages, 14 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in MNRAS

International audience; Two landmark papers in the 1970s contributed strongly to establishing the importance of galaxy interactions and mergers in the formation and evolution of galaxies, using only gravity, and the ensuing dynamical friction.

We study the spatially resolved star formation history and molecular gas distribution of 58 nearby galaxies, using integral field spectroscopy from the CALIFA survey and CO $J=1\rightarrow 0$ intensity mapping from the CARMA EDGE survey. We use the 4000 \AA\ break (D$_n$4000), the equivalent width of the H$\delta$ absorption line (EW H$\delta_A$), and the equivalent width of the H$\alpha$ emission line (EW H$\alpha$) to measure the recent star formation history (SFH) of these galaxies. We measure radial profiles of the three SFH indicators and molecular gas mass surface density, from which we measure the level of centrally enhanced star formation and the molecular gas concentration. When we separate our galaxies into categories of barred (17 galaxies), unbarred (24 galaxies), and merging/paired (17 galaxies) we find that the galaxies which have centrally-enhanced star formation (19/58) are either barred (13/19) or in mergers/pairs (6/19) with relatively high molecular gas concentrations. A comparison between our barred galaxies and a snapshot of a hydrodynamic $N$-body simulation of a barred galaxy shows that the current theory of bar formation and evolution can qualitatively reproduce the main features of the observed galaxies in our sample, including both the sharp decrease of stellar age in the galactic center and the gradual decrease of age with increasing distance from center. These findings provide substantial evidence for a picture in which cold gas is transported inward by a bar or tidal interaction, which leads to the growth and rejuvenation of star formation in the central region., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS

We study the effect of angular momentum on the surface density profiles of disc galaxies, using high resolution simulations of major mergers whose remnants have downbending radial density profiles (type II). As described in the previous papers of this series, in this scenario, most of the disc mass is acquired after the collision via accretion from a hot gaseous halo. We find that the inner and outer disc scalelengths, as well as the break radius, correlate with the total angular momentum of the initial merging system, and are larger for high angular momentum systems. We follow the angular momentum redistribution in our simulated galaxies, and find that, like the mass, the disc angular momentum is acquired via accretion, i.e. to the detriment of the gaseous halo. Furthermore, high angular momentum systems give more angular momentum to their discs, which affects directly their radial density profile. Adding simulations of isolated galaxies to our sample, we find that the correlations are valid also for disc galaxies evolved in isolation. We show that the outer part of the disc at the end of the simulation is populated mainly by inside-out stellar migration, and that in galaxies with higher angular momentum, stars travel radially further out. This, however, does not mean that outer disc stars (in type II discs) were mostly born in the inner disc. We present evidence of bar-induced secular evolution in galactic discs using 3.6 ${\mu m}$ images of nearby galaxies from the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies (S4G). We find that among massive galaxies ($M_{star}/M_{sun}> 10^{10}$), longer bars tend to reside in inner discs having a flatter radial profile. Such galaxies show a light deficit in the disc surrounding the bar, within the bar radius and often show a $\Theta$-shaped morphology. We quantify this deficit and find that among all galaxies explored in this study (with $10^{9}, Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 12 pages, 8 figures

Context. This paper is a contribution to the discussion about whether the X/peanut component is part of the bar, or the bar itself. Aims. Our goal is to present a clear-cut case of a barred-spiral galaxy in which all structural components (i.e. the thick and thin part of the bar and the spiral arms) can be observed in its image and their dimensions directly measured there. Methods. We obtained deep images of the nearby galaxy NGC 352, which has an ideal inclination allowing us to observe all of the parts that compose its morphology, estimate their relative sizes, and determine the topology of the luminous matter of this galaxy. We successfully compare our findings with the existence and the relative dimensions of the corresponding components encountered in the disc of a GADGET N-body model. Results. NGC 352 is a barred spiral galaxy with a bar of about 13 kpc radius. Its bar has a central thick part that extends up to a distance about 5 kpc from the centre of the galaxy along its major axis, while its thickness reaches a height of 3.8 kpc. Thus, the thick part of the bar occupies the central part of the bar component, and its length is about 40% of that of the thin bar. The branches of the X-feature are characterised by the presence of ‘hooks’ at their extremities. The profile along the major axis of the bar is characterised by the presence of ‘shoulders’, the end of which is associated with local surface brightness enhancements on the equatorial plane. A central disc with a spiral-like feature embedded in it dominates in the innermost 1.7 kpc. Conclusions. NGC 352 offers a case in which we directly observe that the X/peanut component is unambiguously part of the bar. This boxy structure is neither a separate bulge component nor the bar itself. The relative extent of the peanut with respect to the bar is well inside the range predicted in the majority of the simulated N-body bars. The hooks of the X-feature and the local surface brightness enhancements on the equatorial plane have their counterparts in surface density features of models based on the orbital theory, as well as of models based on response calculations and of fully selfconsistent N-body calculations.

Bars in galaxies may form not only through instability, but also as a result of an interaction with another galaxy. In particular, they may appear in disky dwarf galaxies interacting with Milky Way-like galaxies. Here we report the results of N-body/SPH simulations of such dwarfs orbiting in the static potential of a larger galaxy. We used several models of the dwarf galaxy, all of the same mass, but covering a large range of gas fractions: 0, 30 and 70%. We also tested the impact of subgrid star formation processes. In all cases bars of similar length formed in the stellar disk of the dwarfs at the first pericenter passage. However, unexpectedly, the gaseous component remained approximately axisymmetric and unaffected by the bar potential. The bar properties did not change significantly between two consecutive pericenters. The impact of the later encounters with the host depends strongly on the exact orientation of the bar at the pericenter. When the bar is spun up by the tidal force torque, it is also shortened. Conversely, if it is slowed down, it gets longer. In the models with a low gas fraction the bars were more pronounced and survived until the end of the simulations, while in the dwarfs with a high gas fraction the bars were destroyed after the second or third pericenter passage. In terms of the ratio of the corotation radius to the bar length, the bars are slow, and remain so independently of the encounters with the host., Comment: 19 pages, 18 figures, accepted to ApJ

Context. Asymmetries in atomic hydrogen (HI) in galaxies are often caused by the interaction with close companions, making isolated galaxies an ideal framework to study secular evolution. The AMIGA project has demonstrated that isolated galaxies show the lowest level of asymmetry in their HI integrated profiles compared to even field galaxies, yet some present significant asymmetries. CIG 96 (NGC 864) is a representative case reaching a 16% level. Aims. Our aim is to investigate the HI asymmetries of the spiral galaxy CIG 96 and what processes have triggered the star-forming regions observed in the XUV pseudo-ring. Methods. We performed deep optical observations at CAHA1.23m, CAHA2.2m and VST (OmegaCAM wide-field camera) telescopes. We reach surface brightness (SB) limits of μ = 27.5 mag arcsec (Cousins R) and μ = 28.7 mag arcsec (SDSS r) that show the XUV pseudo-ring of the galaxy in detail. Additionally, a wavelet filtering of the HI data cube from our deep observations with VLA/EVLA telescope allowed us to reach a column density of N = 8.9 × 10 cm (5σ) (28″ × 28″ beam), lower than in any isolated galaxy. Results. We confirm that the HI of CIG 96 extends farther than 4 × r in all directions. Furthermore, we detect for the first time two gaseous structures (∼10 M) in the outskirts. The SDSS g-r colour index image from CAHA1.23m shows extremely blue colours in certain regions of the pseudo-ring where N > 8.5 × 10 cm, whereas the rest show red colours. Galactic cirrus contaminate the field, setting an unavoidable detection limit at 28.5 mag arcsec (SDSS r). Conclusions. At the current SB and N levels, we detect no stellar link within 1° × 1° or gaseous link within 40′ × 40′ between CIG 96 and any companion. The isolation criteria rule out interactions with other similar-sized galaxies for at least ∼2.7 Gyr. Using existing stellar evolution models, the age of the pseudo-ring is estimated at 1 Gyr or older. I will give here a very short summary of some of the work I have been doing lately on the chemical evolution in Milky-Way-like spiral galaxies.

We present a hydrodynamical model of M33 and its recent interaction with M31. This scenario was previously proposed in the literature in order to explain the distorted gaseous and stellar disks of M33, as well as the increased star formation rate in both objects around 2 Gyr ago. We used an orbit integration scheme to find which estimate of the transverse velocity of M31 more favors the interaction scenario and then tried to reproduce it in our simulations. M33 was modeled as a stellar and gaseous disk embedded in a live dark-matter halo, while M31 was approximated only with a live dark halo. In the simulations the two galaxies passed each other with a pericenter distance of 37 kpc. Tides excited a two-armed spiral structure in the M33 disk, which is found to be the predominant spiral signal in the observed galaxy and has been long known as a feature easily induced by tidal interactions. We found that the gaseous warp produced by the interaction did not resemble enough the observed one and we performed an additional simulation including the hot gas halo of M31 to show that this feature can be properly reproduced by tidal forces and ram pressure stripping acting simultaneously on the gaseous disk. In addition to the spiral arms, tidal forces produced the stellar stream similar to the observed one and triggered a star formation burst at similar radii as it is observed., 22 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Barred galaxies have interesting morphological features whose presence and properties set constraints on galactic evolution. Here we examine barlenses, i.e. lens-like components whose extent along the bar major axis is shorter than that of the bar and whose outline is oval or circular. We identify and analyse barlenses in $N$-body plus SPH simulations, compare them extensively with those from the NIRS0S (Near-IR S0 galaxy survey) and the S$^4$G samples (Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies) and find very good agreement. We observe barlenses in our simulations from different viewing angles. This reveals that barlenses are the vertically thick part of the bar seen face-on, i.e. a barlens seen edge-on is a boxy/peanut/X bulge. In morphological studies, and in the absence of kinematics or photometry, a barlens, or part of it, may be mistaken for a classical bulge. Thus the true importance of classical bulges, both in numbers and mass, is smaller than currently assumed, which has implications for galaxy formation studies. Finally, using the shape of the isodensity curves, we propose a rule of thumb for measuring the barlens extent along the bar major axis of moderately inclined galaxies, thus providing an estimate of which part of the bar is thicker., 21 pages, 11 figures, revised version as published in MNRAS

We examine the effects that the modelling of a Boxy/Peanut (B/P) bulge will have on the estimates of the stellar gravitational potential, forces, orbital structure and bar strength of barred galaxies. We present a method for obtaining the potential of disc galaxies from surface density images, assuming a vertical density distribution (height function), which is let to vary with position, thus enabling it to represent the geometry of a B/P. We construct a B/P height function after the results from a high-resolution, N-body+SPH simulation of an isolated galaxy and compare the resulting dynamical model to those obtained with the commonly used, position-independent "flat" height functions. We show that methods that do not allow for a B/P can induce errors in the forces in the bar region of up to 40% and demonstrate that this has a significant impact on the orbital structure of the model, which in turn determines its kinematics and morphology. Furthermore, we show that the bar strength is reduced in the presence of a B/P. We conclude that neglecting the vertical extent of a B/P can introduce considerable errors in the dynamical modelling. We also examine the errors introduced in the model due to uncertainties in the parameters of the B/P and show that even for generous but realistic values of the uncertainties, the error will be noticeably less than that of not modelling a B/P bulge at all., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a kinematical study of 29 spiral galaxies included in the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies, using Halpha Fabry-Perot data obtained with the Galaxy Halpha Fabry-Perot System instrument at the William Herschel Telescope in La Palma, complemented with images in the R-band and in Halpha. The primary goal is to study the evolution and properties of the main structural components of galaxies through the kinematical analysis of the FP data, complemented with studies of morphology, star formation and mass distribution. In this paper we describe how the FP data have been obtained, processed and analysed. We present the resulting moment maps, rotation curves, velocity model maps and residual maps. Images are available in FITS format through the NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database and the Centre de Donn\'ees Stellaires. With these data products we study the non-circular motions, in particular those found along the bars and spiral arms. The data indicate that the amplitude of the non-circular motions created by the bar does not correlate with the bar strength indicators. The amplitude of those non-circular motions in the spiral arms does not correlate with either arm class or star formation rate along the spiral arms. This implies that the presence and the magnitude of the streaming motions in the arms is a local phenomenon., Comment: 23 pages, 14 figures, without appendices, accepted to be published in MNRAS

We model the split red clump of the Galactic bulge in OGLE-III photometry, and compare the results to predictions from two N-body models. Our analysis yields precise maps of the brightness of the two red clumps, the fraction of stars in the more distant peak, and their combined surface density. We compare the observations to predictions from two N-body models previously used in the literature. Both models correctly predict several features as long as one assumes an angle $\alpha_{\rm{Bar}} \approx 30^{\circ}$ between the Galactic bar's major axis and the line of sight to the Galactic centre. In particular that the fraction of stars in the faint red clump should decrease with increasing longitude. The biggest discrepancies between models and data are in the rate of decline of the combined surface density of red clump stars toward negative longitudes and of the brightness difference between the two red clumps toward positive longitudes, with neither discrepancy exceeding $\sim$25% in amplitude. Our analysis of the red giant luminosity function also yields an estimate of the red giant branch bump parameters toward these high-latitude fields, and evidence for a high rate ($\sim$25%) of disk contamination in the bulge at the colour and magnitude of the red clump, with the disk contamination rate increasing toward sightlines further distant from the plane., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Boxy/Peanut/X-shaped (B/P/X) bulges are studied using the 3.6 mum images from the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies, and the K_s-band images from the Near-IR S0 galaxy Survey. They are compared with the properties of barlenses, defined as lens-like structures embedded in bars, with sizes of about 50% of bars and axial ratios of 0.6-0.9. Based on observations and recent simulation models we show evidence that barlenses are the more face-on counterparts of B/P/X-shaped bulges. Using unsharp masks 18 new X-shaped structures are identified, covering a large range of galaxy inclinations. The similar masses and red B-3.6 mum colors of the host galaxies, and the fact that the combined axial ratio distribution of the host galaxy disks is flat, support the interpretation that barlenses and X-shapes are physically the same phenomenon. We present a pilot study on the nearby massive galaxy NGC 1291, in which we aim to constrain the dark matter in the inner regions, by obtaining a dynamical determination of the disc mass-to-light ratio (M/L). To this aim, we model the bar-induced dust lanes in the galaxy, using hydrodynamic gas response simulations. The models have three free parameters, the M/L of the disc, the bar pattern speed and the disc height function. We explore the parameter space to find the best fit models, i.e. those in which the morphology of the shocks in the gas simulations matches the observed dust lanes. The best-fit models suggest that the M/L of NGC 1291 agrees with that predicted by stellar population synthesis models in the near-infrared ($\approx$0.6\,$M_{\odot}/L_{\odot}$), which leads to a borderline maximum disc for this galaxy. The bar rotates fast, with corotation radius $\leq$ 1.4 times the bar length. Additionally, we find that the height function has a significant effect on the results, and can bias them towards lower or higher M/L., 3 pages. Dynamical simulations are a fundamental tool for studying the secular evolution of disc galaxies. Even at their maximum resolution, they still follow a limited number of particles and typically resolve scales of the order of a few tens of parsecs. Generally, the spatial resolution is defined by (some multiple of) the softening length, whose value is set as a compromise between the desired resolution and the need for limiting small-scale noise. Several works have studied the question whether a softening scale fixed in space and time provides a good enough modelling of an astrophysical system. Here we address this question within the context of dynamical simulations and disc instabilities. We first follow the evolution of a galaxy-like object in isolation and then set up a simulation of an idealised merger event. Alongside a run using the standard fixed-softening approach, we performed simulations where the softening lengths were let to vary from particle to particle according to the evolution of the local density field in space and time. Even though during the most violent phases of the merging the fixed-softening simulation tends to underestimate the resulting matter densities, as far as the evolution of the disc component is concerned we found no significant differences among the runs. We conclude that using an appropriate fixed softening scale is a safe approach to the problem of modelling an N-body, non-cosmological disc galaxy system., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures. I present examples of how chemo-dynamical N-body simulations can help understanding the structure and evolution of the inner Galaxy. Such simulations reproduce the observed links between kinematics, morphology and chemistry in the bar/bulge region and explain them by the self-consistent cohabitation of a number of components. Galactic archaeology, applied to simulation snapshots, explains the sequence in which the stars of the various components were formed. The thick disc stars form earlier than those of the thin disc and in a much shorter time scale. The bar in the thick disc is horizontally thicker than that of the thin disc and has a different vertical morphology. Context: In a series of papers, we study the major merger of two disk galaxies in order to establish whether or not such a merger can produce a disc galaxy. Aims: Our aim here is to describe in detail the technical aspects of our numerical experiments. Methods: We discuss the initial conditions of our major merger, which consist of two protogalaxies on a collision orbit. We show that such merger simulations can produce a non-realistic central mass concentration, and we propose simple, parametric, AGN-like feedback as a solution to this problem. Our AGN-like feedback algorithm is very simple: at each time-step we take all particles whose local volume density is above a given threshold value and increase their temperature to a preset value. We also compare the GADGET3 and GIZMO codes, by applying both of them to the same initial conditions. Results: We show that the evolution of isolated protogalaxies resembles the evolution of disk galaxies, thus arguing that our protogalaxies are well suited for our merger simulations. We demonstrate that the problem with the unphysical central mass concentration in our merger simulations is further aggravated when we increase the resolution. We show that our AGN-like feedback removes this non-physical central mass concentration, and thus allows the formation of realistic bars. Note that our AGN-like feedback mainly affects the central region of a model, without significantly modifying the rest of the galaxy. We demonstrate that, in the context of our kind of simulation, GADGET3 gives results which are very similar to those obtained with the PSPH (density independent SPH) flavor of GIZMO. Moreover, in the examples we tried, the differences between the results of the two flavors of GIZMO, namely PSPH, and MFM (mesh-less algorithm) are similar to and, in some comparisons, larger than the differences between the results of GADGET3 and PSPH., 13 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We use N-body chemo-dynamic simulations to study the coupling between morphology, kinematics and metallicity of the bar/bulge region of our Galaxy. We make qualitative comparisons of our results with available observations and find very good agreement. We conclude that this region is complex, since it comprises several stellar components with different properties -- i.e. a boxy/peanut bulge, thin and thick disc components, and, to lesser extents, a disky pseudobulge, a stellar halo and a small classical bulge -- all cohabiting in dynamical equilibrium. Our models show strong links between kinematics and metallicity, or morphology and metallicity, as already suggested by a number of recent observations. We present a pilot study on the nearby massive barred galaxy NGC 1291, in which we use dynamical modelling to constrain the disc mass-to-light ratio (M/L), thus breaking the degeneracy between the baryonic and dark matter in its central regions. We use the gas, specifically the morphology of the dust lanes on the leading side of the bar, as a tracer of the underlying gravitational potential. We run a large number of hydrodynamic gas response simulations, in potentials obtained directly from near-infrared images of the galaxy, which have three free parameters: the M/L, the bar pattern speed and the height function. We explore the three-dimensional parameter space, by comparing the morphology of the shocks created in the gas response simulations with those of the observed dust lanes, and find the best-fitting models; these suggest that the M/L of NGC 1291 agrees with that predicted by stellar population synthesis models in the near-infrared ($\approx$0.6\,$M_{\odot}/L_{\odot}$), which leads to a borderline maximum disc for this galaxy. We present the metallicity results from the ARGOS spectroscopic survey of the Galactic bulge. Our aim is to understand the formation of the Galactic bulge: did it form via mergers, as expected from Lambda CDM theory, or from disk instabilities, as suggested by its boxy/peanut shape, or both? We have obtained spectra for 28,000 stars at a spectral resolution of R = 11,000. From these spectra, we have determined stellar parameters and distances to an accuracy of < 1.5 kpc. The stars in the inner Galaxy span a large range in [Fe/H], -2.8 < [Fe/H] < +0.6. From the spatial distribution of the red clump stars as a function of [Fe/H] (Ness et al. 2012a), we propose that the stars with [Fe/H] > -0.5 are part of the boxy/peanut bar/bulge. We associate the lower metallicity stars ([Fe/H] < -0.5) with the thick disk, which may be puffed up in the inner region, and with the inner regions of the metal-weak thick disk and inner halo. For the bulge stars with [Fe/H] > -0.5, we find two discrete populations; (i) stars with [Fe/H] ~ -0.25 which provide a roughly constant fraction of the stars in the latitude interval b = -5 deg to -10 deg, and (ii) a kinematically colder, more metal-rich population with mean [Fe/H] ~ +0.15 which is more prominent closer to the plane. The changing ratio of these components with latitude appears as a vertical abundance gradient of the bulge. We attribute both of these bulge components to instability-driven bar/bulge formation from the thin disk. We do not exclude a weak underlying classical merger-generated bulge component, but see no obvious kinematic association of any of our bulge stars with such a classical bulge component. We have studied a representative sample of intermediate-mass galaxies at z~1, observed by the kinematic survey KMOS3D. We have re-estimated the kinematical parameters from the published kinematic maps and analysed photometric data from HST to measure optical disk inclinations and PAs. We find that only half of the z~1 galaxies show kinematic properties consistent with rotating disks, using the same classification scheme than that adopted by the KMOS3D team. Because merger orbital motions can also brought rotation, we have also analysed galaxy morphologies from the available HST imagery. Combining these results to those from kinematics, it leads to a full morpho-kinematic classification. To test the robustness of the latter for disentangling isolated disks from mergers, we confronted the results with an analysis of pairs from the open-grism redshift survey 3D-HST. All galaxies found in pairs are affected by either kinematic and/or morphological perturbations. Conversely, all galaxies classified as virialized spirals are found to be isolated. A significant fraction (one fourth) of rotating disks classified from kinematics by the KMOS3D team are found in pairs, which further supports the need for a morpho-kinematic classification. It results that only one third of z~1 galaxies are isolated and virialized spirals, while 58% of them are likely involved in a merger sequence, from first approach to disk rebuilding. The later fraction is in good agreement with the results of semi-empirical {\Lambda}CDM models, supporting a merger-dominated hierarchical scenario as being the main driver of galaxy formation at least during the last 8 billion years.

Orbits are the key building blocks of any density distribution and their study helps us understand the kinematical structure and the evolution of galaxies. Here we investigate orbits in a tidally induced bar of a dwarf galaxy, using an $N$-body simulation of an initially disky dwarf galaxy orbiting a Milky Way-like host. After the first pericenter passage, a tidally induced bar forms in the stellar component of the dwarf. The bar evolution is different than in isolated galaxies and our analysis focuses on the period before it buckles. We study the orbits in terms of their dominant frequencies, which we calculate in a Cartesian coordinate frame rotating with the bar. Apart from the well-known x$_1$ orbits we find many other types, mostly with boxy shapes of various degree of elongation. Some of them are also near-periodic, admitting frequency ratios of 4/3, 3/2 and 5/3. The box orbits have various degrees of vertical thickness but only a relatively small fraction of those have banana (i.e. smile/frown) or infinity-symbol shapes in the edge-on view. In the very center we also find orbits known from the potential of triaxial ellipsoids. The elongation of the orbits grows with distance from the center of the bar in agreement with the variation of the shape of the density distribution. Our classification of orbits leads to the conclusion that more than $80 \%$ of them have boxy shapes, while only $8 \%$ have shapes of classical x$_1$ orbits., 15 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

In this letter we investigate the effect of boxy/peanut (b/p) bulges on bar-induced gas inflow to the central kiloparsec, which plays a crucial role on the evolution of disc galaxies. We carry out hydrodynamic gas response simulations in realistic barred galaxy potentials, including or not the geometry of a b/p bulge, to investigate the amount of gas inflow induced in the different models. We find that b/p bulges can reduce the gas inflow rate to the central kiloparsec by more than an order of magnitude, which leads to a reduction in the amount of gas available in the central regions. We also investigate the effect of the dark matter halo concentration on these results, and find that for maximal discs, the effect of b/p bulges on gas inflow remains significant. The reduced amount of gas reaching the central regions due to the presence of b/p bulges could have significant repercussions on the formation of discy- (pseudo-) bulges, on the amount of nuclear star formation and feedback, on the fuel reservoir for AGN activity, and on the overall secular evolution of galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society Letters. 5 pages, 6 figures

The dynamics and evolution of any galactic structure are strongly influenced by the properties of the orbits that constitute it. In this paper, we compare two orbit classification schemes, one by Laskar (NAFF) , and the other by Carpintero and Aguilar (CA), by applying both of them to orbits obtained by following individual particles in a numerical simulation of a barred galaxy. We find that, at least for our case and some provisos, the main frequencies calculated by the two methods are in good agreement: for $80\%$ of the orbits the difference between the results of the two methods is less than $5\%$ for all three main frequencies. However, it is difficult to evaluate the amount of regular or chaotic bar orbits in a given system. The fraction of regular orbits obtained by the NAFF method strongly depends on the critical frequency drift parameter, while in the CA method the number of fundamental frequencies strongly depends on the frequency difference parameter $L_{\rm r}$ and the maximum integer used for searching the linear independence of the fundamental frequencies. We also find that, for a given particle, in general the projection of its motion along the bar minor axis is more regular than the other two projections, while the projection along the intermediate axis is the least regular., 14 pages, 21 figures; Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Using N-body simulations we study the formation and evolution of tidally induced bars in disky galaxies in clusters. Our progenitor is a massive, late-type galaxy similar to the Milky Way, composed of an exponential disk and an NFW dark matter halo. We place the galaxy on four different orbits in a Virgo-like cluster and evolve it for 10 Gyr. As a reference case we also evolve the same model in isolation. Tidally induced bars form on all orbits soon after the first pericenter passage and survive until the end of the evolution. They appear earlier, are stronger, longer and have lower pattern speeds for tighter orbits. Only for the tightest orbit the properties of the bar are controlled by the orientation of the tidal torque from the cluster at pericenters. The mechanism behind the formation of the bars is the angular momentum transfer from the galaxy stellar component to its halo. All bars undergo extended periods of buckling instability that occur earlier and lead to more pronounced boxy/peanut shapes when the tidal forces are stronger. Using all simulation outputs of galaxies at different evolutionary stages we construct a toy model of the galaxy population in the cluster and measure the average bar strength and bar fraction as a function of clustercentric radius. Both are found to be mildly decreasing functions of radius. We conclude that tidal forces can trigger bar formation in cluster cores, but not in the outskirts, and thus cause larger concentrations of barred galaxies towards cluster center., 13 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Using three fiducial Nbody+SPH simulations, we follow the merging of two disk galaxies with a hot gaseous halo component each, and examine whether the merger remnant can be a spiral galaxy. The stellar progenitor disks are destroyed by violent relaxation during the merging and most of their stars form a classical bulge, while the remaining form a thick disk and its bar. A new stellar disk forms subsequently and gradually in the remnant from the gas accreted mainly from the halo. It is vertically thin and well extended in its equatorial plane. A bar starts forming before the disk is fully in place, contrary to what is assumed in idealised simulations of isolated bar-forming galaxies. It has morphological features such as ansae and boxy/peanut bulges. Stars of different ages populate different parts of the box/peanut. A disky pseudobulge forms also, so that by the end of the simulation, all three types of bulges coexist. The oldest stars are found in the classical bulge, followed by those of the thick disk, then by those in the thin disk. The youngest stars are in the spiral arms and the disky pseudobulge. The disk surface density profiles are of type II (exponential with downbending), and the circular velocity curves are flat and show that the disks are submaximum in these examples: two clearly so and one near-borderline between maximum and submaximum. The mechanism causing breaks in the radial surface brightness distribution of spiral galaxies is not yet well known. Despite theoretical efforts, there is not a unique explanation for these features and the observational results are not conclusive. In an attempt to address this problem, we have selected a sample of 34 highly inclined spiral galaxies present both in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and in the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies. We have measured the surface brightness profiles in the five Sloan optical bands and in the 3.6$\mu m$ Spitzer band. We have also calculated the color and stellar surface mass density profiles using the available photometric information, finding two differentiated features: an innermost break radius at distances of $\sim 8 \pm 1$ kpc [$0.77 \pm 0.06$ $R_{25}$] and a second characteristic radius, or truncation radius, close to the outermost optical extent ($\sim 14 \pm 2$ kpc [$1.09 \pm 0.05$ $R_{25}$]) of the galaxy. We propose in this work that the breaks might be a phenomena related to a threshold in the star formation, while truncations are more likely a real drop in the stellar mass density of the disk associated with the maximum angular momentum of the stars.
