We present an analysis on the behaviour of the Galactic bulge and the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) $\delta$ Scuti stars in terms of period-colour and amplitude-colour (PCAC) relations at maximum, mean and minimum light. The publicly available Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment-IV (OGLE-IV) light curves for Galactic bulge and OGLE-III light curves for LMC $\delta$ Scuti stars are exploited for the analysis. It has been found that the Galactic bulge $\delta$ Scuti stars obey flat PC relations at maximum/mean/minimum light while the LMC $\delta$ Scutis have sloped/sloped/flat PC relations at maximum/mean/minimum light. Both the Galactic bulge and the LMC $\delta$ Scutis have sloped/flat/sloped AC relations at maximum/mean/minimum. These relations also show that Galactic $\delta$ Scutis are hotter as compared to their LMC counterparts. The period-amplitude (PA) relations for $\delta$ Scutis exhibit different behaviour in the Galactic bulge and the LMC. The LMC variables are found to have higher amplitudes at a given period. The amplitude of the Galactic bulge $\delta$ Scuti shows a bimodal distribution which can be modelled using a two-component Gaussian Mixture Model: one component with a lower amplitude and another with a higher amplitude. The observed behaviour of the $\delta$ Scuti PCAC relations can be explained using the theory of the interaction of hydrogen ionization front (HIF) and stellar photosphere as well as the PA diagram. We use MESA-RSP to calculate theoretical non-linear hydrodynamical pulsation models for $\delta$ Scuti stars with input metallicities of $Z=0.02$ and $Z=0.008$ appropriate for the Galactic bulge and LMC, respectively. Rotationally-induced mode splitting frequencies of low-luminosity subgiants suggest that angular momentum transport mechanisms are 1-2 orders of magnitude more efficient in these stars than predicted by theory. Constraints on the rotation profile of low-luminosity subgiants could be used to identify the dominant mechanism for angular momentum transport. We develop a forward model for the rotation profile given observed rotational splittings, assuming a step-like rotation profile. We identify a consistent degeneracy between the position of the profile discontinuity and the surface rotation rate. We perform mock experiments that show the discontinuity position can be better constrained with a prior on the surface rotation rate, which is informed by star spot modulations. We finally apply this approach to KIC 12508433, a well-studied low-luminosity subgiant, as an example case. With the observed surface rotation prior, we obtain a factor of two increase in precision of the position of strong rotation gradient. We recover the literature values of the core and surface rotation rates and find the highest support for a discontinuity in the radiative zone. Auxiliary measurements of surface rotation could substantially improve inferences on the rotation profile of low-luminosity subgiants with already available data., 9 pages, 11 figures, 2 table

Do white dwarfs have inner cores made of iron? Neutron rich nuclei like $^{56}$Fe experience a net gravitational force and sediment toward the core. Using new phase diagrams and molecular dynamics simulations, we show that $^{56}$Fe should separate into mesoscopic Fe-rich crystallites due to its large charge relative to the background. At solar abundances, these crystallites rapidly precipitate and form an inner core of order 100 km and $10^{-3} M_\odot$ that may be detectable with asteroseismology. Associated cooling delays could be up to a Gyr for low mass white dwarfs but are only $\sim$0.1 Gyr for massive white dwarfs, so while this mechanism may contribute to the Q-branch the heating is insufficient to fully explain it., 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

Asteroseismic measurements enable inferences of the underlying stellar structure, such as the density and the speed of sound at various points within the interior of the star. This provides an opportunity to test stellar evolution theory by assessing whether the predicted structure of a star agrees with the measured structure. Thus far, this kind of inverse analysis has only been applied to the Sun and three solar-like main-sequence stars. Here we extend the technique to stars on the subgiant branch, and apply it to one of the best-characterized subgiants of the Kepler mission, HR 7322. The observation of mixed oscillation modes in this star facilitates inferences of the conditions of its inert helium core, nuclear-burning hydrogen shell, and the deeper parts of its radiative envelope. We find that despite significant differences in the mode frequencies, the structure near to the center of this star does not differ significantly from the predicted structure., 12 pages, 15 figures. Our sample consists of 25 pulsators: ten fundamental mode, three overtone and two double-mode classical Cepheids, plus three type II and seven anomalous Cepheids. The targets were chosen from fields with different stellar densities, both from the Galactic field and from the Magellanic System. Three targets have 2 minutes cadence light curves available by the TESS Science Processing Operations Center: for the rest, we prepared custom light curves from the full-frame images with our own differential photometric FITSH pipeline. Our main goal was to explore the potential and the limitations of TESS concerning the various subtypes of Cepheids. We detected many low-amplitude features: weak modulation, period jitter, and timing variations due to light-time effect. We also report signs of nonradial modes and the first discovery of such a mode in an anomalous Cepheid, the overtone star XZ Cet, which we then confirmed with ground-based multicolor photometric measurements. We prepared a custom photometric solution to minimize saturation effects in the bright fundamental-mode classical Cepheid, β Dor with the lightkurve software, and we revealed strong evidence of cycle-to-cycle variations in the star. In several cases, however, fluctuations in the pulsation could not be distinguished from instrumental effects, such as contamination from nearby sources, which also varies between sectors. Finally, we discuss how precise light-curve shapes will be crucial not only for classification purposes but also to determine physical properties of these stars. © 2021. [Context] The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) is observing bright known planet-host stars across almost the entire sky. These stars have been subject to extensive ground-based observations, providing a large number of radial velocity measurements., [Aims] The objective of this work is to use the new TESS photometric observations to characterize the star λ2 Fornacis, and following this to update the parameters of the orbiting planet λ2 For b., [Methods] We measured the frequencies of the p-mode oscillations in λ2 For, and in combination with non-seismic parameters estimated the stellar fundamental properties using stellar models. Using the revised stellar properties and a time series of archival radial velocities from the UCLES, HIRES and HARPS instruments spanning almost 20 years, we refit the orbit of λ2 For b and searched the residual radial velocities for remaining variability., [Results] We find that λ2 For has a mass of 1.16 ± 0.03 M⊙ and a radius of 1.63 ± 0.04 R⊙, with an age of 6.3 ± 0.9 Gyr. This and the updated radial velocity measurements suggest a mass of λ2 For b of 16.8−1.3+1.2 M⊕, which is ∼5M⊕ less than literature estimates. We also detect an additional periodicity at 33 days in the radial velocity measurements, which is likely due to the rotation of the host star., [Conclusions] While previous literature estimates of the properties of λ2 For are ambiguous, the asteroseismic measurements place the star firmly at the early stage of its subgiant evolutionary phase. Typically only short time series of photometric data are available from TESS, but by using asteroseismology it is still possible to provide tight constraints on the properties of bright stars that until now have only been observed from the ground. [Context] With the advent of space-based asteroseismology, determining accurate properties of red-giant stars using their observed oscillations has become the focus of many investigations due to their implications in a variety of fields in astrophysics. Stellar models are fundamental in predicting quantities such as stellar age, and their reliability critically depends on the numerical implementation of the physics at play in this evolutionary phase., [Aims] We introduce the Aarhus red giants challenge, a series of detailed comparisons between widely used stellar evolution and oscillation codes that aim to establish the minimum level of uncertainties in properties of red giants arising solely from numerical implementations. We present the first set of results focusing on stellar evolution tracks and structures in the red-giant-branch (RGB) phase., [Methods] Using nine state-of-the-art stellar evolution codes, we defined a set of input physics and physical constants for our calculations and calibrated the convective efficiency to a specific point on the main sequence. We produced evolutionary tracks and stellar structure models at a fixed radius along the red-giant branch for masses of 1.0 M⊙, 1.5 M⊙, 2.0 M⊙, and 2.5 M⊙, and compared the predicted stellar properties., [Results] Once models have been calibrated on the main sequence, we find a residual spread in the predicted effective temperatures across all codes of ∼20 K at solar radius and ∼30–40 K in the RGB regardless of the considered stellar mass. The predicted ages show variations of 2–5% (increasing with stellar mass), which we attribute to differences in the numerical implementation of energy generation. The luminosity of the RGB-bump shows a spread of about 10% for the considered codes, which translates into magnitude differences of ∼0.1 mag in the optical V-band. We also compare the predicted [C/N] abundance ratio and find a spread of 0.1 dex or more for all considered masses., [Conclusions] Our comparisons show that differences at the level of a few percent still remain in evolutionary calculations of red giants branch stars despite the use of the same input physics. Period-colour and amplitude-colour (PCAC) relations can be used to probe both the hydrodynamics of outer envelope structure and evolutionary status of Cepheids and RR Lyraes. In this work, we incorporate the PCAC relations for RR Lyraes, BL Her, W Vir and classical Cepheids in a single unifying theory that involves the interaction of the hydrogen ionization front (HIF) and stellar photosphere and the theory of stellar evolution. PC relations for RR Lyraes and classical Cepheids using OGLE-IV data are found to be consistent with this theory: RR Lyraes have shallow/sloped relations at minimum/maximum light whilst long-period ($P>10$ days) Cepheids exhibit sloped/flat PC relations at minimum/maximum light. The differences in the PC relations for Cepheids and RR Lyraes can be explained based on the relative location of the HIF and stellar photosphere which changes depending on their position on the HR diagram. We also extend our analysis of PCAC relations for type II Cepheids in the Galactic bulge, LMC and SMC using OGLE-IV data. We find that BL Her stars have sloped PC relations at maximum and minimum light similar to short-period ($P, 20 pages, 14 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Convective boundary mixing (CBM) is ubiquitous in stellar evolution. It is a necessary ingredient in the models in order to match observational constraints from clusters, binaries and single stars alike. We compute `effective overshoot' measures that reflect the extent of mixing and which can differ significantly from the input overshoot values set in the stellar evolution codes. We use constraints from pressure modes to infer the CBM properties of Kepler and CoRoT main-sequence and subgiant oscillators, as well as in two radial velocity targets (Procyon A and $\alpha$ Cen A). Collectively these targets allow us to identify how measurement precision, stellar spectral type, and overshoot implementation impact the asteroseismic solution. With these new measures we find that the `effective overshoot' for most stars is in line with physical expectations and calibrations from binaries and clusters. However, two F-stars in the CoRoT field (HD 49933 and HD 181906) still necessitate high overshoot in the models. Due to short mode lifetimes, mode identification can be difficult in these stars. We demonstrate that an incongruence between the radial and non-radial modes drives the asteroseismic solution to extreme structures with highly-efficient CBM as an inevitable outcome. Understanding the cause of seemingly anomalous physics for such stars is vital for inferring accurate stellar parameters from TESS data with comparable timeseries length., Comment: 20 Pages, 9 Figures, 4 Tables and supplementary material. Asteroseismology has emerged as the best way to characterize the global and internal properties of nearby stars. Often, this characterization is achieved by fitting stellar evolution models to asteroseismic observations. The star under investigation is then assumed to have the properties of the best-fitting model, such as its age. However, the models do not fit the observations perfectly. This is due to incorrect or missing physics in stellar evolution calculations, resulting in predicted stellar structures that are discrepant with reality. Through an inverse analysis of the asteroseismic data, it is possible to go further than fitting stellar models, and instead infer details about the actual internal structure of the star at some locations in its interior. Comparing theoretical and observed stellar structures then enables the determination of the locations where the stellar models have discrepant structure, and illuminates a path for improvements to our understanding of stellar evolution. In this invited review, we describe the methods of asteroseismic inversions, and outline the progress that is being made towards measuring the interiors of stars.

Owing to their simplicity and ease of application, seismic scaling relations are widely used to determine the properties of stars exhibiting solar-like oscillations, such as solar twins and red giants. So far, no seismic scaling relations for determining the ages of red giant stars have been developed. Such relations would be desirable for galactic archaeology, which uses stellar ages to map the history of the Milky Way. The ages of red giants must instead be estimated with reference to grids of theoretical stellar models, which can be computationally intensive. Here I present an exhaustive search for scaling age relations involving different combinations of observable quantities. The candidate scaling relations are calibrated and tested using more than 1,000 red giant stars whose ages were obtained via grid-based modeling. I report multiple high-quality scaling relations for red giant branch stars, the best of which are shown to be approximately as accurate as grid-based modeling with typical uncertainties of 15%. We investigate the variation of the gravitational constant $G$ over the history of the Universe by modeling the effects on the evolution and asteroseismology of the low-mass star KIC 7970740, which is one of the oldest (~11 Gyr) and best-observed solar-like oscillators in the Galaxy. From these data we find $\dot{G}/G = (1.2 \pm 2.6) \times 10^{-12}~\text{yr}^{-1}$, that is, no evidence for any variation in $G$. We also find a Bayesian asteroseismic estimate of the age of the Universe as well as astrophysical S-factors for five nuclear reactions obtained through a 12-dimensional stellar evolution Markov chain Monte Carlo simulation., 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

The vast majority of Milky Way stellar halo stars were likely accreted from a small number ($\lesssim$3) of relatively large dwarf galaxy accretion events. However, the timing of these events is poorly constrained, relying predominantly on indirect dynamical mixing arguments or imprecise age measurements of stars associated with debris structures. Here, we aim to infer robust stellar ages for stars associated with galactic substructures to more directly constrain the merger history of the Galaxy. By combining kinematic, asteroseismic, and spectroscopic data where available, we infer stellar ages for a sample of 10 red giant stars that were kinematically selected to be associated with the stellar halo, a subset of which are associated with the Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage halo substructure, and compare their ages to 3 red giant stars in the Galactic disk. Despite systematic differences in both absolute and relative ages determined by this work, age rankings of stars in this sample are robust. Passing the same observable inputs to multiple stellar age determination packages, we measure a weighted average age for the Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage stars in our sample of 8 $\pm$ 3 (stat.) $\pm$ 1 (sys.) Gyr. We also determine hierarchical ages for the populations of Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage, in situ halo and disk stars, finding a Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage population age of 8.0$^{+3.2}_{-2.3}$ Gyr. Although we cannot distinguish hierarchical population ages of halo or disk structures with our limited data and sample of stars, this framework should allow distinct characterization of Galactic substructures using larger stellar samples and additional data available in the near future., 28 pages, 21 figures. Transport of angular momentum in stellar interiors is currently not well understood. Asteroseismology can provide us with estimates of internal rotation of stars and thereby advances our understanding of angular momentum transport. We can measure core-rotation rates in red-giant stars and we can place upper bounds on surface-rotation rates using measurements of dipole ($l=1$) modes. Here, we aim to determine the theoretical sensitivity of modes of different spherical degree towards the surface rotation. Additionally, we aim to identify modes that can potentially add sensitivity at intermediate radii. We used asteroseismic rotational inversions to probe the internal stellar rotation profiles in red-giant models from the base of the red-giant branch up to the luminosity bump. We used the inversion method of multiplicative optimally localised averages (MOLA) to assess how well internal and surface rotation rates can be recovered from different mode sets and different synthetic rotation profiles. We confirm that dipole mixed modes are sufficient to set constraints on the average core-rotation rates in red giants. However, surface-rotation rates estimated with only dipole mixed modes are contaminated by the core rotation. We show that the sensitivity to the surface rotation decreases from the base of the red-giant branch until it reaches a minimum at 0.6-0.8$L_\text{bump}$ due to a glitch in the buoyancy frequency. Thereafter a narrow range of increased surface sensitivity just below the bump luminosity exists. Quadrupole and octopole modes have more sensitivity in the outer parts of the star. If observed, quadrupole and octopole modes enable us to distinguish between differential and solid body rotation in the convection zone. A simple solar scaling relation for estimating the ages of main-sequence stars from asteroseismic and spectroscopic data is developed. New seismic scaling relations for estimating mass and radius are presented as well, including a purely seismic radius scaling relation (i.e., no dependence on temperature). A recent ion mobility spectrometry-mass spectrometry (IMS-MS) study revealed that tryptic peptide ions containing a proline residue at the second position from the N-terminus (i.e., penultimate proline) frequently adopt multiple conformations, owing to the cis-trans isomerization of Xaa(1)-Pro(2) peptide bonds [J. Am. Soc. Mass Spectrom. 2015, 26, 444]. Here, we present a statistical analysis of a neuropeptide database that illustrates penultimate proline residues are frequently found in neuropeptides. In order to probe the effect of penultimate proline on neuropeptide conformations, IMS-MS experiments were performed on two model peptides in which penultimate proline residues were known to be important for biological activity: the N-terminal region of human neuropeptide Y (NPY1-9, Tyr(1)-Pro(2)-Ser(3)-Lys(4)-Pro(5)-Asp(6)-Asn(7)-Pro(8)-Gly(9)-NH2) and a tachykinin-related peptide (CabTRP Ia, Ala(1)-Pro(2)-Ser(3)-Gly(4)-Phe(5)-Leu(6)-Gly(7)-Met(8)-Arg(9)-NH2). From these studies, it appears that penultimate prolines allow neuropeptides to populate multiple conformations arising from the cis-trans isomerization of Xaa(1)-Pro(2) peptide bonds. Although it is commonly proposed that the role of penultimate proline residues is to protect peptides from enzymatic degradation, the present results indicate that penultimate proline residues also are an important means of increasing the conformational heterogeneity of neuropeptides.

The search for twins of the Sun and Earth relies on accurate characterization of stellar and exoplanetary parameters: i.e., ages, masses, and radii. In the modern era of asteroseismology, parameters of solar-like stars are derived by fitting theoretical models to observational data, which include measurements of their oscillation frequencies, metallicity [Fe/H], and effective temperature Teff. Combining this information with transit data furthermore yields the corresponding parameters for their exoplanets. While [Fe/H] and Teff are commonly stated to a precision of ~0.1 dex and ~100 K, the impact of errors in their measurement has not been studied in practice within the context of the parameters derived from them. Here we use the Stellar Parameters in an Instant (SPI) pipeline to estimate the parameters of nearly 100 stars observed by Kepler and Gaia, many of which are confirmed planet hosts. We adjust the reported spectroscopic measurements of these stars by introducing faux systematic errors and artificially increasing the reported uncertainties, and quantify the differences in the resulting parameters. We find that a systematic error of 0.1 dex in [Fe/H] translates to differences of only 4%, 2%, and 1% on average in the resulting stellar ages, masses, and radii, which are well within their uncertainties (~11%, 3.5%, 1.4%) as derived by SPI. We also find that increasing the uncertainty of [Fe/H] measurements by 0.1 dex increases the uncertainties by only 0.01 Gyr, 0.02 M_sun, and 0.01 R_sun, which are again well below their reported uncertainties (0.5 Gyr, 0.04 M_sun, 0.02 R_sun). The results for Teff at 100 K are similar. Stellar parameters from SPI are unchanged within uncertainties by errors of up to 0.14 dex or 175 K, and are even more robust to errors in Teff than the seismic scaling relations. We present a method for measuring internal stellar structure based on asteroseismology that we call "inversions for agreement." The method accounts for imprecise estimates of stellar mass and radius as well as the relatively limited oscillation mode sets that are available for distant stars. By construction, the results of the method are independent of stellar models. We apply this method to measure the isothermal sound speeds in the cores of the solar-type stars 16 Cyg A and B using asteroseismic data obtained from Kepler observations. We compare the asteroseismic structure that we deduce against best-fitting evolutionary models and find that the sound speeds in the cores of these stars exceed those of the models., Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

With the advent of dedicated photometric space missions, the ability to rapidly process huge catalogues of stars has become paramount. Bellinger and Angelou et al. (2016) recently introduced a new method based on machine learning for inferring the stellar parameters of main-sequence stars exhibiting solar-like oscillations. The method makes precise predictions that are consistent with other methods, but with the advantages of being able to explore many more parameters while costing practically no time. Here we apply the method to 52 so-called "LEGACY" main-sequence stars observed by the Kepler space mission. For each star, we present estimates and uncertainties of mass, age, radius, luminosity, core hydrogen abundance, surface helium abundance, surface gravity, initial helium abundance, and initial metallicity as well as estimates of their evolutionary model parameters of mixing length, overshooting coefficient, and diffusion multiplication factor. We obtain median uncertainties in stellar age, mass, and radius of 14.8%, 3.6%, and 1.7%, respectively. The masses and radii of solar-like oscillators can be estimated through the asteroseismic scaling relations. These relations provide a direct link between observables, i.e. effective temperature and characteristics of the oscillation spectra, and stellar properties, i.e. mean density and surface gravity (thus mass and radius). These scaling relations are commonly used to characterize large samples of stars. Usually, the Sun is used as a reference from which the structure is scaled. However, for stars that do not have a similar structure as the Sun, using the Sun as a reference introduces systematic errors as large as 10\% in mass and 5\% in radius. Several alternatives for the reference of the scaling relation involving the large frequency separation (typical frequency difference between modes of the same degree and consecutive radial order) have been suggested in the literature. In a previous paper, we presented a reference function with a dependence on both effective temperature and metallicity. The accuracy of predicted masses and radii improved considerably when using reference values calculated from our reference function. However, the residuals indicated that stars on the red-giant branch possess a mass dependence that was not accounted for. Here, we present a reference function for the scaling relation involving the large frequency separation that includes the mass dependence. This new reference function improves the derived masses and radii significantly by removing the systematic differences and mitigates the trend with $\nu_{\rm max}$ (frequency of maximum oscillation power) that exists when using the solar value as a reference., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Astronomy is in an era where all-sky surveys are mapping the Galaxy. The plethora of photometric, spectroscopic, asteroseismic and astrometric data allows us to characterise the comprising stars in detail. Here we quantify to what extent precise stellar observations reveal information about the properties of a star, including properties that are unobserved, or even unobservable. We analyse the diagnostic potential of classical and asteroseismic observations for inferring stellar parameters such as age, mass and radius from evolutionary tracks of solar-like oscillators on the lower main sequence. We perform rank correlation tests in order to determine the capacity of each observable quantity to probe structural components of stars and infer their evolutionary histories. We also analyse the principal components of classic and asteroseismic observables to highlight the degree of redundancy present in the measured quantities and demonstrate the extent to which information of the model parameters can be extracted. We perform multiple regression using combinations of observable quantities in a grid of evolutionary simulations and appraise the predictive utility of each combination in determining the properties of stars. We identify the combinations that are useful and provide limits to where each type of observable quantity can reveal information about a star. We investigate the accuracy with which targets in the upcoming TESS and PLATO missions can be characterized. From its surface properties it can be difficult to determine whether a red-giant star is in its helium-core-burning phase or only burning hydrogen in a shell around an inert helium core. Stars in either of these stages can have similar effective temperatures, radii and hence luminosities, i.e. they can be located at the same position in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. Asteroseismology -- the study of the internal structure of stars through their global oscillations -- can provide the necessary additional constraints to determine the evolutionary states of red-giant stars. Here, we present a method that uses grid-based modelling based on global asteroseismic properties ($\nu_{\rm max}$, frequency of maximum oscillation power; and $\Delta\nu$, frequency spacing between modes of the same degree and consecutive radial orders) as well as effective temperature and metallicity to determine the evolutionary phases. The scaling relations between global asteroseismic observables and stellar properties are widely used to estimate masses and radii of stars exhibiting solar-like oscillations. Since the mass and radius of the Sun are known independently, the Sun is commonly used as a reference to scale to. However, the validity of the scaling relations depends on the homology between the star under study and the reference star. Solar-like oscillators span a wide range of masses and metallicities, as well as evolutionary phases. Most of these stars are therefore not homologous to the Sun. This leads to errors of up to 10% (5%) in mass (radius) when using the asteroseismic scaling relations with the Sun as the reference. In this paper we derive a reference function to replace the solar-reference value used in the large-frequency-separation scaling relation. Our function is the first that depends on both effective temperature and metallicity, and is applicable from the end of the main sequence to just above the bump on the red giant branch. This reference function improves the estimates of masses and radii determined through scaling relations by a factor of 2, i.e. allows masses and radii to be recovered with an accuracy of 5% and 2%, respectively., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Owing to the remarkable photometric precision of space observatories like Kepler, stellar and planetary systems beyond our own are now being characterized en masse for the first time. These characterizations are pivotal for endeavors such as searching for Earth-like planets and solar twins, understanding the mechanisms that govern stellar evolution, and tracing the dynamics of our Galaxy. The volume of data that is becoming available, however, brings with it the need to process this information accurately and rapidly. While existing methods can constrain fundamental stellar parameters such as ages, masses, and radii from these observations, they require substantial computational efforts to do so. We develop a method based on machine learning for rapidly estimating fundamental parameters of main-sequence solar-like stars from classical and asteroseismic observations. We first demonstrate this method on a hare-and-hound exercise and then apply it to the Sun, 16 Cyg A & B, and 34 planet-hosting candidates that have been observed by the Kepler spacecraft. We find that our estimates and their associated uncertainties are comparable to the results of other methods, but with the additional benefit of being able to explore many more stellar parameters while using much less computation time. We furthermore use this method to present evidence for an empirical diffusion-mass relation. Our method is open source and freely available for the community to use. We present an asteroseismic analysis of the Kepler light curve of MC 8263801, a red-giant star in the open cluster NGC 6866 that has previously been reported to be a helium-burning red-clump (RC) star. We extracted the frequencies of the radial and quadrupole modes from its frequency power spectrum and determined its properties using a grid of evolutionary models constructed with MESA. The oscillation frequencies were calculated using the GYRE code and the surface term was corrected using the Ball & Gizon prescription. We find that the star has a mass of M/M-circle dot = 1.793 +/- 0.072, age t = 1.48 +/- 0.21 Gyr, and radius R/R-circle dot = 10.53 +/- 0.28. By analyzing the internal structure of the best-fitting model, we infer the evolutionary status of the star MC 8263801 as being on the ascending part of the red-giant branch, and not on the RC. This result is verified using a purely asteroseismic diagnostic, the epsilon(c) - Delta nu(c), diagram which can distinguish red-giant branch stars from red-clump stars. Finally, by comparing its age with NGC 6866 (t = 0.65 +/- 0.1 Gyr), we conclude that KIC 8263801 is not a member of this open cluster.

This paper discusses two aspects of current research on the Cepheid period-luminosity (P-L) relation: the derivation of mid-infrared (MIR) P-L relations and the investigation of multi-phase P-L relations. The MIR P-L relations for Cepheids are important in the James Webb Space Telescope era for the distance scale issue, as the relations have potential to derive the Hubble constant within ~ 2% accuracy - a critical constraint in precision cosmology. Consequently, we have derived the MIR P-L relations for Cepheids in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, using archival data from Spitzer Space Telescope. We also compared currently empirical P-L relations for Cepheids in the Magellanic Clouds to the synthetic MIR P-L relations derived from pulsational models. For the study of multi-phase P-L relations, we present convincing evidence that the Cepheid P-L relations in the Magellanic Clouds are highly dynamic quantities that vary significantly when considered as a function of pulsational phase. We found that there is a difference in P-L relations as a function of phase between the Cepheids in each of the Clouds; the most likely cause for this is the metallicity difference between the two galaxies.
