Water and energy consumption and carbon emissions caused by humans have vital impacts on the natural environment. Due to the dramatic global environmental pollution problem, understanding the relationship between these factors is emerging as an important approach to realising sustainable development. However, with the strengthening of interregional trade links, it is difficult to manage and evaluate their relationship. Therefore, from the perspective of regional and industrial sectors, using the multiregional input-output (MRIO) model and social network analysis (SNA), our research explores an innovative analytical methodology to evaluate the characteristics of the energy-water-carbon spatial network, and a scheme is proposed to improve it. The results demonstrate that the characteristics of water scarcity and energy enrichment could lead to a net inflow of the water footprint and a net outflow of the energy and carbon footprints. Moreover, traditional high-energy-consumption industrial sectors contribute significantly to the energy and carbon footprints. The energy-water-carbon spatial network correlation is low and unstable, and it lacks rationalisation and balance in resource-based areas. Network-based energy-water-carbon research provides more insights toward understanding the carbon emission reduction responsibilities of industrial supply chains. Food supply chains hold significant embodied carbon emissions that need to be mitigated and neutralized. This study aimed to explore the historical Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions associated with household food consumption at a local scale i.e. across the eight English regions and the four nations that comprise the United Kingdom (UK). UK EatWell guidelines were used to explore the potential change in emissions and food costs in a scenario of transitions to healthier diets across the study areas. These emissions were calculated based on food consumption data before the advent of the Covid-pandemic i.e. between the years 2001 and 2018. Spatial data analysis was used to explore if the study areas had any significant correlations with respect to the emissions during the study period. The results displayed a potential reduction in GHG emissions for all study areas in the explored scenario. Further impacts include a reduction in household food costs across a majority of the areas during the study period. However, a consistent trend of significant correlations among the study areas was absent. This study concludes that local or regional policymaking should take precedence over national regulations to achieve healthier diets that are both carbon-neutral and affordable for the households. Carbon neutrality and resilience are two of important goals pursued by supply chains today. This study seeks to determine how carbon footprint reduction (CFR) can be achieved in a resilient supply chain from a process integration perspective. Based on contingency theory, we employed the decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) approach to examine the critical influencing factors of process integration using evaluations from academic and professional experts. Our findings reveal that, first, at the strategic level, supply chain collaboration (SCC) and supply chain agility and responsiveness (SCAR) have the highest contributions to process integration. Second, process and control risks have the highest contributions in supply chain risk management; herein, collaborative planning, forecasting, and replenishment (CPFR) holds the highest contribution in the SCC, visibility and velocity have the highest contributions in the SCAR, and supply chain efficiency holds the highest contribution in supply chain flexibility (SCF). Finally, CPFR has a significant influence on both supplier and customer engagement, with supply chain intelligence influencing customer engagement in the SCC. Both the standardisation and parallel processes influence supplier spending in the SCF. This paper will argue that the collapse of advanced industrial society is inevitable on a global scale in the near-term (i.e., in a matter of decades from present), and that, furthermore, it will be irreversible. Industrial society, generally, will be seen as an aberration or anomaly in human history, one costly in terms of human life and suffering, as well as ecological devastation, lasting no more than three hundred years from the start of the Industrial Revolution in Great Britain in 1750 CE to its terminus in circa 2050 CE. Studying glacier changes is essential for understanding global glacier mass balance, patterns in climate change, and the potential consequences they may have. The glaciers of Geladandong Mountain serve as a crucial water source for the Yangtze River and its downstream regions. Any changes in the glacier at the river source will directly impact the ecological environment and water recycling process downstream. This study presents an approach for monitoring Geladandong Mountain glacier elevation changes using ICESat-2 data combined with a Binned Multilevel Regression Fitting Method (BMRFM). We analysed multi-year ICESat-2 data, considering various topographic features, to understand glaciers' annual and seasonal elevation changes. Our research reveals significant spatial heterogeneity in glacier elevation changes, influenced by altitude, slope, and aspect factors. It demonstrates the effectiveness of ICESat-2 in glacier monitoring, offering insights into the impacts of climate change on glacier dynamics. Moreover, the results indicate a predominant trend of ongoing melting at lower altitudes, with a small amount of accretion at higher elevations. Over the last two decades, the overall elevation change rate is −0.23 ± 0.12 metres per year. Seasonal analysis shows substantial glacier thickening from April to August, primarily due to increased precipitation offsetting elevated temperatures. AbstractMicrobially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) is a geotechnical solution with a low ecological footprint. Conducting MICP inside a porous medium can be used for biocementation. Despite many models and tools being published for simulating MICP, a computationally light, easy-to-use, and freely-available simulation tool is lacking. In this work, we present a reactive transport model using the native capabilities of the Phreeqc software (a free and open-source geochemical solver). We model MICP inside a column packed with sands and inoculated with bacteria. Our model is a one-dimensional representation of the column that accounts for the kinetics of precipitation and ureolysis as well as porosity change. We verify our model by simulating previously published MICP experiments to show our model gives reasonably well predictions. Sensitivity analysis of our model’s input parameters and discussions around their range are presented. Additionally, we calculate the supersaturation of calcite as a function of space and time—a feature that could be important for precipitation, but it is commonly ignored in MCIP modeling. Our scripts developed for running simulations are accessible publicly. Background Methods Results Conclusion Replacing single‐use operating theatre equipment with reusables might be one strategy for reducing the carbon footprint of operating theatres. However, in Australia, where the energy mix is predominantly fossil‐fuel‐based, the re‐sterilization of reusables may increase the carbon footprint. We analyzed the financial and environmental impacts of introducing reusable operating theatre light handles in two NSW hospitals.The effects on cost, waste, and carbon footprint of replacing disposable light handle covers with reusable handles in each hospital were analyzed over 12 months using procurement, waste and sterilization data, and life cycle assessment.Energy requirement for sterilization of reusable handles, increasing alongside weight of the handle, resulted in higher carbon footprint than using disposable covers. At one hospital, using a heavy handle increased carbon emissions sixfold, while the cost of handle sterilization exceeded the cost of disposable covers, resulting in 11% higher cost per use. At the other hospital, using a lighter handle increased carbon emissions by 40% per use, while sterilization cost was less than the cost of disposable covers, resulting in 14.8% lower cost per use. Scenario modelling indicated that sterilizing handles as part of a hollowware set rather than as individual items would significantly reduce cost and carbon footprint. At both hospitals, associated clinical waste was essentially eliminated.Judicious replacement of disposable covers with lightweight yet durable reusable handles can reduce costs, but increases carbon footprint in the current Australian energy context. This review focuses on essential factors influencing nutrient management and the processes that contribute to soil carbon enhancement. Effective management is crucial for the sustainability of pasture-based dairy systems, as herbage biomass significantly influences nutrient cycling and soil organic matter accumulation. For instance, well-managed pastures with high biomass can efficiently recycle nutrients from manure, enhancing plant growth. This process contributes to soil organic carbon buildup, which aids in carbon sequestration. In contrast, poor nutrient management can lead to nutrient imbalances and lower herbage production, reducing carbon storage potential. Moreover, the movement of nutrients below the surface is a critical pathway for enhancing soil health and promoting ecological balance. By implementing sustainable practices and refining nutrient stewardship strategies, pasture-based dairy farmers can significantly advance their sustainability goals. Agriculture plays a pivotal role in Africa, contributing significantly to sustainable farming practices and the establishment of resilient food systems. Within this context, the use of various types of biostimulants, including microbial biostimulants such as Plant Growth-Promoting microorganisms (PGPM) and non-microbial products like Algal extract, humic acid, and protein hydrolysates, as well as biopesticides, emerges as a promising strategy to bolster sustainable agriculture, particularly in the realm of organic berry production. These substances have the potential to enhance crop growth, fortify stress tolerance, and optimize nutrient absorption, benefiting both human health and the environment. This paper aims to explore the opportunities and challenges associated with incorporating plant biostimulants into organic berry production within the African agricultural sector. To achieve this objective, an extensive and comprehensive review encompassing scientific literature, policy documents, and global data was conducted. The primary focus of this review was to investigate the current state of biostimulant adoption in organic berry farming within the African agricultural sector, with a specific emphasis on identifying potential opportunities and discussing the benefits derived from their application. Additionally, we addressed the challenges encountered and proposed practical approaches to achieving sustainable agriculture. The findings and conclusions of our review reveal the transformative potential of biostimulants in organic berry production. The evidence points to remarkable advancements in plant growth, plant health, overall yield, and fruit nutritional quality. By implementing these substances, we can also minimize the ecological footprint of agricultural practices. However, several challenges remain, including limited accessibility, insufficient awareness and knowledge regarding biostimulant usage, and a shortage of research specific to African agriculture. To overcome these challenges and achieve sustainable agriculture, this paper recommends practical approaches such as raising awareness, investing in research and development, and promoting the use of biostimulants through policy interventions and capacity-building programs. The economic development of N-11 countries has been significantly influenced by the contributions of natural resources (NAT) and economic globalization (EG). These countries have been facing drastic environmental problems for several years. Hence, it is imperative to ascertain the environmental ramifications of natural resource extraction activities in the N-11 nations. In doing so, this study examines the impact of gross domestic product (GDP), EG, and NAT on ecological footprints (EF) within the time frame of 1971 to 2022 in the group of N-11 countries. After verifying the cross-sectional dependence, this work found the integration of all variables at first difference. To provide short and long run econometric results; this study utilizes cross sectional autoregressive distributed lag (CS-ARDL). The findings indicate that the presence of NAT rent has a detrimental impact (0.03%) on the ecological quality within the N-11 nations. Moreover, it can be argued that both EG and GDP exhibit environmentally sustainable characteristics over an extended period by (0.03% and − 3.12%) respectively. This study does not provide evidence for the presence of an N-shaped Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) in the N-11 nations. Based on the findings, a policy recommendation is proposed for the nations in question. These countries must immediately implement and enforce robust environmental laws while fostering a heightened sense of environmental consciousness. This introduction explains the significance of the quintessentially Southeast Asian ‘king of fruit’, the durian. In the last nine years or so, durian production has been scaling up from small 4-acre orchards to plantations of 10,000 acres in Malaysia. This has to do with the opening up of the China market for Malaysian whole durians (both nitrogen-frozen and fresh chilled durians) which differ from Thai durians. The rush to open up new plantations through clear-cutting forests has multiple socio-environmental consequences. Yet studies on the ecological and social impact of durian plantations or critiques of the durian Plantationocene and Capitalocene are scarce. This brief essay lays out the context and justifies why there is a need to study the durian and its multiple stakeholders, both human and nonhuman, along the supply chain. Identifying a humanities and social science gap in the research on the durian, the special focus provides new theories to think about the fruit in relation to media, anthropology, Indigenous studies, food, identity and cultural studies. The discharge of wastewater from the mining industry has a critical ecological impact, potentially endangering both soil and marine ecosystems. Alternatively, recovering pure water and valuable materials from these hypersaline streams through a technologically efficient process, would help reduce the ecological impact of the waste, while providing a viable supply chain for raw materials such as magnesium, potassium and others, considered critical to the economy. In this context, this work aimed to simultaneously recover pure water and mineral salts from mine wastewater by membrane-assisted crystallization (MAC). A prior theoretical study based on thermodynamic parameters attempted to predict salts precipitation at different temperatures. MAC tests were then performed at specific thermal gradients and feed pretreatment conditions, achieving preferential precipitation of solids products of different composition containing large quantities of Ca or Mg/K minerals from the real mine tailing wastewater. Beef production is a major contributor to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and has therefore been placed at the center of global policy and research agendas on climate change mitigation and adaptation. However, detailed quantification of the intensity of beef's contribution to emissions has mostly focused on the farm level. This research uses the calculation of a food miles emissions indicator to analyze the Colombian beef supply network from slaughterhouses to national consumption centers and its emissions between 2019 and 2022, including a network analysis and weighted average source distance (WASD) estimation. The results were compared with emissions from the transport of alternative animal proteins, specifically chicken and pork. The results show that the beef miles emissions indicator in Colombia is equivalent to 0.055330 kg CO2eq/ton of beef/km, which is higher than pork and chicken. These findings highlight the need to develop comprehensive approaches and strategies to reduce emissions from beef production, recognizing the critical role that the beef supply network, transport distances, infrastructure, and technology play in beef-related emissions. The sustainable dietary transitions must account for the varied culinary traditions and regional food cultures to ensure a balanced and culturally sensitive approach. This study aims to explore the impact of regional preferences on culinary culture and examine ways to achieve environmentally friendly dietary transitions in China by considering the differences in the environmental burdens of various cuisines. We investigate the eight Chinese culinary traditions and depict their respective popularity in China at the city level via POI characterization based on ArcGIS. Water, carbon, and ecological footprints are selected to investigate the environmental performance of each type of cuisine. Results show that the eight cuisines vary significantly in spreads of influence and environmental performances. Chuan cuisine is the most widely disseminated cuisine with a relatively low environmental burden. The remaining seven cuisines have limited spreads of influence and are mainly distributed in small cultural regions and the surrounding areas. Hui Cuisine, Zhe Cuisine, and Min Cuisine have the worst environmental performances. This study reveals the significant impact of regional cuisines on the environmental footprint of diets and highlights the necessity of considering this impact when promoting dietary transition, especially in culturally diverse countries. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), including acenaphthene, pose a significant threat to aquatic ecosystems by harming vital organisms such as benthic invertebrates. This study evaluated the impact of environmentally relevant concentrations of acenaphthene on Tubifex tubifex, focusing on sublethal acute toxicity and subchronic biomarker responses. Key biomarkers assessed included histopathological changes and the modulation of antioxidant enzymes: catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione S-transferase (GST), and malondialdehyde (MDA). Additionally, the study examined structure–activity relationships and species sensitivity distribution (SSD). Concentrations exceeding the solubility threshold of acenaphthene (3.9 mg/L) triggered distinct, concentration-dependent behavioral responses in Tubifex tubifex, such as clumping, mucus secretion, and body wrinkling. Prolonged exposure exacerbated these behavioral dysfunctions, while subchronic exposure resulted in significant histopathological alterations, including epithelial hyperplasia, inflammation, edema, fibrosis, and degenerative changes. The edematic appearance of the body wall suggested a potential immune response to exposure. Furthermore, increased activities of CAT, SOD, and GST indicated oxidative stress in the worms. The study found a 1.5-fold increase in CAT and GST activity, a fivefold increase in SOD, and a striking 100-fold increase in MDA levels compared to controls, signifying an overwhelmed antioxidant defense system and potential cellular disruption. The SSD curve revealed hazard concentrations (HC50 and HC90), indicating that Tubifex tubifex exhibited lower sensitivity to acenaphthene compared to other taxa. In silico analysis and read-across models confirmed the potential of acenaphthene to induce significant oxidative stress upon exposure. The correlation between biomarker responses and structure–activity relationship analysis highlighted the aromatic nature of acenaphthene as a key factor in generating reactive metabolites, inhibiting antioxidant enzymes, and promoting redox cycling, ultimately contributing to adverse outcomes. These findings, coupled with behavioral responses and SSD curve inferences, underscore the importance of the solubility threshold of acenaphthene as a critical benchmark for evaluating its ecological impact in aquatic environments. Introduction: This study investigates the complex relationship between economic growth, remittances (REM), export earnings (EEs), infrastructural development (IFD), and environmental sustainability (ES) in Bangladesh over the period from 1990 to 2020. Framed within the context of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis, the research explores how these factors influence environmental outcomes and contributes to ongoing discussions on sustainable development. Methods: Utilizing advanced time-series modeling techniques, including autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) and nonlinear ARDL (NARDL), this study applies unit root tests and co-integration analysis to examine the data. These methods allow for a detailed assessment of both short- and long-term relationships between the variables in question. Results: The findings confirm the EKC hypothesis, showing that economic growth initially leads to increased carbon emissions and environmental degradation, but further development contributes to environmental improvements. Remittances, however, significantly exacerbate carbon emissions and ecological degradation. On the other hand, technological innovation (TI) demonstrates a negative association with carbon emissions and ecological footprint (EF), highlighting its potential in supporting sustainable development. The impacts of export earnings and infrastructural development on environmental sustainability are mixed, with infrastructural growth in particular linked to environmental degradation. Discussion: The study's results underscore the importance of targeted policy interventions to balance economic growth with environmental sustainability. Policymakers should focus on mitigating the environmental impacts of remittance inflows and fostering technological innovation to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Summary Here, we developed and applied models to quantitatively reconstruct forest cover and biomass changes at three lakes in northwestern Amazonia over the past > 1500 yr. We used remotely sensed data and a modern dataset of 50 Amazonian lakes to develop generalized linear models that predict aboveground biomass, using phytolith morphotypes and forest cover as predictor variables. Also, we applied a published beta regression model to predict forest cover within 200 m of each lake, using Poaceae phytoliths. Charcoal and maize phytoliths were analysed to identify past land use. Results showed forest cover and biomass changes at our study sites ranged between 48–84% and 142–438 Mg ha−1, respectively. Human occupation was discontinuous, with major changes in forest cover and biomass coinciding with periods of land use. Forest cover and biomass decreased notably after fire (at all sites) or cultivation events (Lakes Zancudococha, Kumpaka). The timing and ecological impact of past land use were spatially and temporally variable. Our results suggest past human impact was small‐scaled and heterogenous in northwestern Amazonia, with a significant impact of fire on forest cover and biomass changes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT Antibiotic pollution in hydrophytic ecosystems has aroused widespread notice due to its adverse impact on both the ecological environment and human physical well‐being. Thus, the development of effective antibiotic detection materials is not only urgently needed but is also challenging. Herein, the luminescent metal–organic framework [Mn3/2(HBCTC)·5H2O] (1) was successfully synthesized based on [9,9′‐bicarbazole]‐3,3′,6,6′‐tetracarboxylic acid (H4BCTC) under solvothermal conditions. Compound 1 can be employed as a fluorescent probe to detect antibiotic difloxacin hydrochloride (DIF) in water, demonstrating a remarkable linear relationship between fluorescence intensity ratio I0/I and the concentration of DIF (0–40 μM), with Ksv of 79,405 M−1 and LOD of 114 nM. More importantly, 1 represents the first fluorescent sensing material based on MOF for the detection of DIF, exhibiting exceptional selectivity, sensitivity, and anti‐interference capability. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations in 2015 represent the current perceptions of humans regarding understanding and monitoring development. Achieving all 17 goals simultaneously is unrealistic. Considering the interconnected nature of SDGs, identifying their critical dimensions, goals, indicators, and mutual relationships is necessary. In addition, with increasing reservations about the sustainability of SDGs, it is crucial to explore consistency across different dimensions to ensure policy coherence in maximizing synergies and minimizing trade-offs. Our study employed multiple factor analysis (MFA) and hierarchical clustering on principal components (HCPC) to investigate these issues and analyze the results based on the public value (PV) theory. The results indicated that the Human Development Index (HDI) and gross domestic product per capita (GDPP) constitute the first principal component (PC) and are determinants in differentiating country clusters. However, they contradict environmental indicators such as CO2 emissions per capita and ecological footprint gha per person (EFP) and have low synergy with the Happy Planet Index (HPI). Additionally, the relationships between income level, inequality, and environmental quality correspond to a combined Kuznets curve and an environmental Kuznets curve (EKC). Moreover, governance capacity has become increasingly crucial in sustainable development, particularly in the capability to prioritize different PVs in a timely and strategic manner. Finally, despite the novelty of EFP and HPI, they cannot reveal the entire development story. Background: It is common practice to classify waste from the operating theater as "clinical". The development of sustainable policies could have a significant impact. In the first phase, our study aims to measure general surgery waste and to assess the potential financial and carbon savings of appropriate recycling. Based on this information, we will plan for a second phase in which educational interventions will be put in place to promote waste segregation in surgical environments. Methods: We conducted a preliminary cognitive audit of the most common general surgery procedures to examine the types and quantity of waste produced. We calculated the economic and environmental impacts of disposing of waste treated as clinical or general, and we measured how much of it could actually be recycled. Then, we attempted a projection of the savings we could expect if recycling policies were implemented. Results: We found that more than 30% of total waste was actually recyclable. Considering a projection based on annual procedures performed in our hospital, we estimated that for each kind of surgical procedure, we could expect a reduction of the carbon footprint by approximately 6%, and an average 3% reduction in costs every year, only by improving waste segregation in the general surgery operating rooms. Conclusion: There could be a great potential for reducing environmental and economic footprint of the operating rooms by promoting waste recycling protocols. The Drosophilid family comprises over 4000 species, with several species posing potential threats to agriculture, as identified by the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organisation (EPPO). Among these species, Drosophila suzukii, Zaprionus tuberculatus and Z. indianus have received attention due to their geographic expansion and potential risks to crops. This research aims to consolidate global data on Z. tuberculatus hosts, with a specific focus on this species' presence in Brazil's Federal District, its first reported location in the Americas. Reviewing existing literature and conducting fieldwork, we identified 61 plant species from 25 botanical families as potential hosts for Z. tuberculatus worldwide, from which 23 species are new hosts. It was noted that Z. tuberculatus had a high density on certain fruits, raising concerns about its potential as a pest. The presence of Z. tuberculatus alongside other pest species, such as Z. indianus and Drosophila suzukii, highlights the complexity of invasive species' interactions and their ecological impacts. Today there is a wealth of data available detailing the climate impact of our actions, including the ${\rm CO}_2$ CO 2 emissions from academic flying. Despite this, such data is hard to engage with in the abstract, leading to little practical action. In this paper, we investigate how to support processes of collectively working through and making sense of environmental data about academic flying through data physicalisation. Drawing on the results from a series of workshops with stakeholders at our own university, in which we have designed and deployed a data physicalisation of flight data, we describe this process and discuss lessons learned with a focus on material, engagement with data and ethics. In this paper, we examine how traditional life-cycle assessment (LCA) for bio-based and compostable plastics overlooks issues surrounding carbon sequestration and microplastic persistence. To outline biased comparisons drawn from these omitted environmental impacts, we provide, as an example, a comparative LCA for compostable biobased vs. non-compostable fossil-based materials. In doing so we (1) demonstrate the proper way to capture carbon footprints to make fair comparisons and (2) identify the overlooked issues of microplastics and the need for non-persistent alternatives. By ensuring accurate biogenic carbon capture, key contributors to CO2 evolution are properly identified, allowing well-informed changes to formulations that can reduce the environmental impact of greenhouse gas emissions. In a complimentary manner, we summarize the growing research surrounding microplastic persistence and toxicity. We highlight the fundamental ability and the growing number of studies that show that industrial composting can completely mineralize certified compostable materials. This mineralization exists as a viable solution to combat microplastic persistence, currently an absent impact category in LCA. In summary, we propose a new paradigm in which the value proposition of biobased materials can be accurately captured while highlighting compostables as a solution for the increasing microplastic accumulation in the environment. The increasing environmental concerns of conventional antifouling coatings have led to the exploration of novel and sustainable solutions to address the biofouling caused by Limnoperna fortunei. As a rapidly expanding invasive species, the fouling process of Limnoperna fortunei is closely associated with microbial fouling, posing significant threats to the integrity of aquatic infrastructure and biodiversity. This review discusses recent progress in the development of non-toxic, eco-friendly antifouling coatings that are designed to effectively resist biofouling without using toxic chemicals. Recent research has focused on developing novel non-toxic coatings that integrate natural bioactive components with advanced material technologies. These formulations not only meet current environmental standards and exhibit minimal ecological impact, but also possess significant potential in preventing the attachment, growth, and reproduction of Limnoperna fortunei. This review aims to provide scientific guidance by proposing effective and sustainable solutions to address the ecological challenges presented by Limnoperna fortunei. The insights gained from current research not only reveal novel antifouling methods, but also identify key areas for further investigation aimed at enhancing performance and environmental compatibility. The paper presents experimental studies on the effect of co-combustion of aviation kerosene with hydrogen in the GTM400 turbojet engine on the change in the carbon footprint generated by the engine in relation to its standard operation without hydrogen in the fuel. This research is in line with current research and development trends carried out in the EU, linking them to the issues of the European Green Deal, the Fit for 55 directive and current environmental trends in aviation and energy. The main objective of the research was to check the effect of hydrogen co-combustion in a turbojet engine on the change of the carbon footprint, while a secondary objective was to verify the impact of higher exhaust gas temperatures generated by the new, high-calorific fuel on the secondary generation of nitrogen oxides (NOx), especially in the thermal mechanism, as an undesirable effect. The research shows that the co-combustion of hydrogen with aviation kerosene in a turbojet engine reduces the carbon footprint (reduction of CO2 maximum of 15% and CO emissions maximum of 24%), but also increases the emission of nitrogen oxides (NOx) maximum of 58%, including those generated in the thermal mechanism (significant increase in the temperature of exhaust gases), moreover, the increase in nitrogen oxide emissions is proportional to the amount of co-combusted hydrogen, which is directly related to the stoichiometry of the combustion process. The main conclusion of the research is that technologies for the combustion or co-combustion of hydrogen in turbojet engines require further research and development, mainly on the side of the use of excess exhaust gas temperature generated during combustion and methods of reducing secondary nitrogen oxides. Purpose: The European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) Green Paper aims to address the challenge of environmental sustainability in intensive care and proposes actionable strategies for integrating sustainability into intensive care unit (ICU) stakeholder actions. Methods: The ESICM Executive Committee appointed a task force of topic experts and ESICM committee representatives to develop the ESICM Green Paper. The task force convened biweekly from January to June 2024, identifying key domains for environmental sustainability and prioritizing actions. Drafts were iteratively refined and approved by the ESICM Executive Committee. Results: Climate change will impact activities in intensive care in many ways, but also the impact of ICU activities on the environment is considerable; drivers for this include extensive resource use and waste generation in ICUs from energy consumption, use of disposable items, and advanced therapies for critically ill patients. The ESICM Green Paper outlines a structured approach for ICUs to reduce their environmental impact, emphasizing energy efficiency, waste reduction, and sustainable procurement. Furthermore, it endorses the need for awareness and education among healthcare professionals, integration of sustainability into research, and sustainable policies within scientific societies. Conclusions: The ESICM Green Paper reviewed the relevance of climate change to intensive care and provided suggestions for clinical practice, research, education, and ESICM organizational domains. It underscores that reducing intensive care's ecological footprint can coexist with high-quality patient care. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted medical conferences, where restrictions on public gatherings resulted in the postponement or cancellation of in-person meetings. Virtual events emerged as a substitute, providing a mechanism for scientific collaboration and continuing medical education with the additional benefit of low environmental impact. However, digital events may not meet all the needs of delegates, such as professional networking and social connection. In this report, we describe the methods used to minimise the carbon footprint of the 2023 Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists' Annual Scientific Meeting, a conference with approximately 2000 in-person and 500 virtual delegates. A core group led the initiative, with all conference participants invited to contribute to this goal. A prospective prediction of carbon generation was undertaken, followed by the implementation of strategies to minimise and then measure the total carbon footprint of the event. Post-event calculations assessed the conference as better than carbon-neutral; however, delegate travel was not included in the analysis and therefore this result is tempered. Off-site workshops including virtual offerings were also not included in the analysis. We encourage medical conference organisers to collaborate with all stakeholders to embed low carbon-generation choices for their meetings where education, networking and social needs are also met. Of the total carbon footprint of Australia, 7% is attributed to healthcare. In the UK, inhalational agents make up 5% of the healthcare carbon footprint. This systematic review aims to determine which methods of education about the environmental impact of inhalational anaesthetic agents can be utilised to promote behaviour change, reducing the anaesthetic-related carbon footprint. This systematic review sourced records from CINAHL, EMBASE, ERIC, JBI and MEDLINE from 1970 to March 2022. The search identified 589 records, 13 of which met eligibility criteria after the screening process, in which 10 of these records were conference abstracts. Education curricula focused on inhalational agent choice (69%), lowering the fresh gas flow during maintenance anaesthesia (69%), encouraging alternatives such as total intravenous anaesthesia (23%) and/or switching off the gas on transfer (8%). The most common teaching techniques utilised in education curricula were didactic lectures (85%), visual prompts (54%), emails (46%), and conversation forums (31%). All but one study reported a positive relationship between teaching sessions and behavioural change resulting in lower inhalational anaesthetic use by participants and their organisations, reducing healthcare-associated emissions. This systematic review has demonstrated that single education sessions as well as multi-focused, multimodal education curricula on the topic of greener anaesthesia can be beneficial in promoting behavioural change. Island ecosystems are particularly susceptible to the impacts of invasive species. Many rare and endangered species that are endemic to islands are negatively affected by invasions. Past studies have shown that the establishment of non‐native species on islands is related to native plant richness, habitat heterogeneity, island age, human activity, and climate. However, it is unclear whether the factors promoting establishment (i.e. the formation of self‐sustaining populations) also promote subsequent invasion (i.e. spread and negative impacts). Using data from 4308 non‐native plant species across 46 islands and archipelagos globally, we examined which biogeographic characteristics influence established and invasive plant richness using generalized linear models nested within piecewise structural equation models. Our results indicate that anthropogenic land use (i.e. human modification) is strongly associated with establishment but not invasion, that climate (maximum monthly temperature) is strongly associated with invasion but not establishment, and that habitat heterogeneity (represented by maximum elevation and island area) is strongly associated with both establishment and invasion. Island isolation explains native plant richness well, but is not associated with established and invasive plant richness, likely due to anthropogenic introductions. We conclude that anthropogenic land use on islands is likely to be a proxy for the number of introductions (i.e. propagule pressure), which is more important for establishment than invasion. Conversely, islands with more diverse habitats and favorable (warm) climate conditions are likely to contain more available niche space (i.e. 'vacant niches') which create opportunities for both establishment and invasion. By evaluating multiple stages of the invasion process, we differentiate between the biogeographic characteristics that influence plant establishment (which does not necessarily lead to ecological impacts) versus those that influence subsequent plant invasion (which does lead to negative impacts). The carbon footprint of devices to deliver inhaled respiratory medications has come into focus as climate change has been identified as a worldwide emergency. Metered dose inhalers (MDIs) contain hydrofluorocarbons that have significant global warming potential compared to dry powder inhalers (DPIs) and soft mist inhalers (SMIs), which do not use a propellant gas. A 12‐month pharmacy inpatient dispensing audit demonstrated that inpatient MDI use significantly outweighed that of DPIs and SMIs and accounted for approximately 99% of inhaler‐related greenhouse gas emissions at our hospital. The United States (US) as the second leading economy in global ecological pollution has become a fertile ground for a rigorous analysis of the ecological neutrality using load capacity factor (LCF) and carbon‐based consumption (CCO2). This is important for the global drive of achieving environmental sustainability by 2050. The LCF is one of the most comprehensive ecological proxies that incorporate the biocapacity and ecological footprint. In this context, this research examines the effect of natural resources, technological innovation, renewable energy and financial globalization on ecological neutrality in the US for the date spanning from 1990 to 2021. Using the novel augmented auto‐regressive distributive lag (AARDL) model, the empirical findings of this study indicate that (i) natural resources, renewable energy, and technological innovation promote ecological neutrality by increasing LCF and decreasing CCO2 emissions; (ii) financial globalization and economic growth mitigate the LCF and increase CCO2 emissions; and (iii) a causal effect is observed among technological innovation, natural resources, renewable energy, CCO2 and LCF. In light of the findings, this study recommends several crucial measures for ecological neutrality targets set out in sustainable development goals (SDGs) 7 and 13, respectively. Tailocins, phage tail-like bacteriocins, are bacterial protein complexes that kill neighboring bacteria, thereby suppressing competitors. The specificity of tailocins depends on their tail fibers, which bind to the target cell's outer membrane, especially binding to specific lipopolysaccharide (LPS) components in a lock-and-key manner. This LPS binding defines the range of bacteria that tailocins can kill. Tailocin genomic loci exhibit differential rates of evolution, with conserved genes involved in structural components and variable genes, such as the tail fibers, determining specificity. The maintenance of diverse tailocin variants over time is likely driven by balancing selection, contributing to long-term persistence within bacterial populations. A tradeoff exists between evolving resistance to tailocins and colonizing the host. Tailocin specificity can be easily modified by swapping tail fibers. Phage tail-like bacteriocins (tailocins) are protein complexes produced by bacteria with the potential to kill their neighbors. Widespread throughout Gram-negative bacteria, tailocins exhibit extreme specificity in their targets, largely killing closely related strains. Despite their presence in diverse bacteria, the impact of these competitive weapons on the surrounding microbiota is largely unknown. Recent studies revealed the rapid evolution and genetic diversity of tailocins in microbial communities and suggest that there are constraints on the evolution of specificity and resistance. Given the precision of their targeted killing and the ease of engineering new specificities, understanding the evolution and ecological impact of tailocins may enable the design of promising candidates for novel targeted antibiotics. Heat extremes are becoming more frequent and severe owing to contemporary climate change, and the observed ecological impacts from past extremes are expected to be exceeded by current and future heat extremes. Although the vulnerabilities of species to heat extremes are increasingly being investigated, the resulting dynamics of populations and communities, including various response stages during and after heat extremes, are rarely considered. Several biological mechanisms can buffer ecological responses at different response stages (exposure, resistance, recovery), but also induce debts that become apparent at later stages. These debts amplify and extend ecological responses over longer periods, especially with sequential climatic (or other disturbance) events. Integrating mechanisms across response stages, with their associated ecological debts, is key to identifying settings where large heat-induced ecological impacts are most likely. Heat extremes have become the new norm in the Anthropocene. Their potential to trigger major ecological responses is widely acknowledged, but their unprecedented severity hinders our ability to predict the magnitude of such responses, both during and after extreme heat events. To address this challenge we propose a conceptual framework inspired by the core concepts of ecological stability and thermal biology to depict how responses of populations and communities accumulate at three response stages (exposure, resistance, and recovery). Biological mechanisms mitigating responses at a given stage incur associated costs that only become apparent at other response stages; these are known as 'ecological debts'. Aims: Healthcare accounts for 5% of global greenhouse gas emissions, with medicines making a sizeable contribution. Product‐level medicine emission data is limited, hindering mitigation efforts. To address this, we created Medicine Carbon Footprint (MCF) Classifier, to estimate, standardize, stratify and visualize medicine carbon footprints. Methods: We used molecular weight and chemical structure to estimate the process mass intensity and global warming potential of the active pharmaceutical ingredient in small molecule medicines. This allowed us to estimate medicine carbon footprints per dose, which we categorized into MCF Ratings, accessible via a searchable web application, MCF Formulary. We performed comparison and sensitivity analyses to validate the ratings, and stratification analyses by therapeutic indication to identify priority areas for emission reduction interventions. Results: We generated standardized medicine carbon footprints for 2214 products, with 38% rated LOW, 35% MEDIUM, 25% HIGH and 2% VERY HIGH. These products represented 2.2 billion NHS England prescribed doses in January 2023, with a total footprint of 140 000 tonnes CO2e, equivalent to the monthly emissions of 940 000 cars. Notably, three antibiotics—amoxicillin, flucloxacillin and penicillin V—contributed 15% of emissions. We estimate that implementing the recommended 20% antibiotic prescription reduction could save 4200 tonnes CO2e per month, equivalent to removing 29 000 cars. Conclusions: Standardized medicine carbon footprints have utility in assessing and addressing the carbon emissions of medicines, and the potential to inform and catalyse changes needed to align better healthcare and net zero commitments. The ecological impact of dreissenid mussel (e.g., quagga and zebra) populations and their empty shells on native fauna in large rivers and lakes has been extensively studied. However, there is limited information on their effects in small wadable streams. Although established mussel populations in these systems are uncommon, their shells are found in high densities in benthic environments and may adversely impact stream communities. Shell densities were quantified using quadrats in two wadable streams to assess impacts on native benthic macroinvertebrates and fish. Eight reaches of each river were sampled, four with dreissenids and four without, totaling 16 locations. Macroinvertebrate and fish communities were characterized using diversity and environmental tolerance indices. Shell densities were significantly higher in dreissenid-invaded sites compared to sites with only native bivalves in both rivers. Dense shell beds had degraded biological conditions with fewer sensitive macroinvertebrates, but bed density did not affect overall macroinvertebrate or fish diversity. These findings differ from lake and large river studies, which found a greater impact of dreissenid shell deposition on macroinvertebrate and fish diversity than we observed in small wadable streams. Thus, a different approach to management and restoration may be necessary to maintain a natural community composition in wadable streams. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The potential threat of fisheries on seabed carbon is a topic of growing concern, yet existing literature presents inconsistencies leaving experts divided on the topic. We conducted a global meta‐analysis to synthesize the current knowledge and quantify how demersal fishing impacts various biogeochemical properties. Direct impact studies revealed overall reductions in chlorophyll‐a (Chl‐a, 17%), phaeopigments (24%), and proteins (32%). Effects on these reactive compounds were more pronounced on surface sediment (0–2 cm), where the impact on total organic carbon (TOC) also became significant, demonstrating the effect of gear penetration, and highlighting that sampling strategies combining sediment layers can mask observed effects. Current velocity and primary productivity significantly influenced the direction and magnitude of fishing impacts. Trawling‐induced subsurface reductions of TOC in low‐energy habitats may affect carbon sequestration due to the preferential removal of semi‐reactive carbon. Intriguingly, fishing intensity gradient studies showed an average increase in TOC in chronically fished areas, possibly reflecting fishing preferences for meso‐eutrophic grounds. We estimate a ~300‐day recovery period post‐fishing for Chl‐a, though values for other parameters are less certain. Limited data on seasonality, gear types, and an under‐representation of studies in tropical and deep‐sea areas pose challenges to quantifying global scale geochemical impacts of demersal fisheries. Knowledge gaps persist in understanding the fate of disturbed organic matter including its mineralization, transport, and sequestration. Nonetheless, our insights and estimates provide foundational knowledge that can contribute to science‐based approaches for spatial fisheries management while preserving natural carbon dynamics on the seabed. England's 10 national parks are renowned for their landscapes, wildlife, and recreational value. However, surface waters in the national parks may be vulnerable to pollution from human‐use chemicals, such as active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), because of factors like ineffective wastewater treatment, seasonal tourism, a high proportion of elderly residents, and the presence of low‐flow water bodies that limit dilution. The present study determined the extent of API contamination in the English national parks by monitoring 54 APIs in 37 rivers across all national parks over two seasons. Results were compared to existing data sets for UK cities and to concentration thresholds for ecological impacts and antimicrobial resistance selection. Results revealed widespread contamination of the national parks, with APIs detected at 52 out of 54 sites and in both seasons. Thirty‐one APIs were detected, with metformin, caffeine, and paracetamol showing the highest mean concentrations and cetirizine, metformin, and fexofenadine being the most frequently detected. While total API concentrations were generally lower than seen previously in UK cities, locations in the Peak District and Exmoor had higher concentrations than most city rivers. Fourteen locations had concentrations of either amitriptyline, carbamazepine, clarithromycin, diltiazem, metformin, paracetamol, or propranolol above levels of concern for fish, invertebrates, and algae or for selection for antimicrobial resistance. Therefore, API pollution of the English national parks appears to pose risks to ecological health and potentially human health through recreational water use. Given that these parks are biodiversity hotspots with protected ecosystems, there is an urgent need for improved monitoring and management of pharmaceutical pollution and pollution more generally not only in national parks in England but also in similar environments across the world. Climate change poses a major threat to human health, with significant contributions from healthcare systems, with the UK National Health Service (NHS) accounting for 4% of national CO 2 emissions. Radiology departments, with high energy consumption from heating, ventilation, cooling (HVAC), and scanners, also contribute significantly. Workstations, though less power-intensive than scanners, are numerous and offer an avenue for emission reduction potential. This study investigates the impact of an automatic power-off/on protocol for radiology workstations at an acute hospital trust on energy consumption, carbon emissions, and financial savings. Data from 88 reporting workstations were collected on power usage, CO 2 emissions, and the associated energy cost before and after implementing an automatic shutdown protocol, which ensured workstations were turned off out of hours and over weekends. Average weekly workstation on-time fell from 148 to 75.5 hours, resulting in an annual energy saving of 17 MWh, equivalent to a reduction of 3.4 tonnes CO 2 equivalent and a financial saving of £5000. No complaints or issues with workflow disruption were reported. This intervention demonstrates a significant reduction in emissions and energy costs without workflow disruption, offering an easy and replicable sustainability measure for radiology departments. While savings are modest compared to HVAC and scanner emissions, the protocol's simplicity and effectiveness in addressing human factors in power management highlight its potential. Broader application across hospital networks could yield substantial environmental and financial benefits. A new structural typology of a Steel-Reinforced Wooden (SRW) purlin made of rectangular laminated wood and C-section type cold-formed steel is presented in this article. The steel C-section profile is fitted onto the wooden purlin so that both work together as a composite unit. Although the wooden sections are weaker and have a lower elastic modulus than the steel sections, the overall dimensions of the SRW purlins are no larger than the steel C-section purlin sizes. The SRW purlins also form lighter structures than either plain steel or wooden purlins and they therefore have lower CO2 emissions. In addition, lighter purlins reduce the load on the main structure, which in turn reduces the material needed for the main structure of the building. So, reinforcement of the wooden purlin with steel sections within certain areas notably improved performance when compared with ordinary single-material purlins. The use of the SRW purlins can, therefore, improve the overall sustainability of a building. The improvements were analyzed in terms of sustainability and lower weight, as a function of span length and design load. The behaviors of the single material purlins and the SRW purlin were also compared. Both material strength and deformation design criteria and their influence were studied using an analytical approach based on loading and span length. The simple, innovative, and reliable design procedure described in this study ensured compliance with all technical requirements. Many emerging dyeing technologies have recently entered laboratory research or industrial production phases. However, only a few studies have evaluated and compared the environmental impact of different dyeing systems. This study calculated the carbon footprint of low-pressure anhydrous dyeing for polyester and compared with conventional water bath dyeing. The results showed that the carbon footprint of the anhydrous dyeing process was 1670 kgCO2 eq/1000 kg polyester. Steam occupied the most significant proportion, accounting for 55.5%, followed by electricity at 35.5%. The waste has the lowest environmental impact, with 0.55%. Uncertainty analyses showed that the data and results in this article were reliable. The results of the sensitivity analyses indicated that more attention should be paid to the data quality of steam and electricity. Compared with the traditional water bath dyeing process, the low-pressure anhydrous dyeing system can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 30% and, more importantly, can avoid almost all the consumption of clean water. This anhydrous dyeing system can save water and reduce carbon emissions, which is of positive significance to the sustainable development of the textile and fashion industry. Aquaculture systems globally face significant environmental challenges, particularly concerning wastewater management. This review explores the innovative application of oxygenic photosynthetic microorganisms (OPhMs), specifically microalgae and cyanobacteria, as a sustainable solution for wastewater treatment within these systems. OPhMs offer a dual role in wastewater treatment by removing harmful pollutants such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and heavy metals, while simultaneously improving water quality through oxygenation. We evaluate the integration of OPhMs into existing aquaculture operations, considering key factors such as system design, operational conditions, and economic viability. Additionally, we discuss the potential of algal biomass as a secondary resource for producing biofuels, animal feed, and other bio-products, contributing to the circular economy model. Our findings highlight the ability of OPhM systems to significantly reduce the ecological footprint of aquaculture while recovering valuable resources. However, challenges such as process stability, especially under low-temperature conditions, and the efficiency of biomass harvesting, require further research. This study provides a comprehensive framework for future development and optimization of OPhM-based wastewater treatment systems to improve the sustainability of aquaculture operations. Studying the relationship between grain planting and the environment is an important means to promote sustainable production. This study takes wheat, a typical grain crop in the Yarkant River oasis irrigation district, the fourth largest agricultural irrigation district in China, as an example to analyze the relationship and changing trends between wheat yield and water footprint (WF), and carbon footprint (CF) from 2001 to 2020. The study found that during the research period, wheat yield, W F g r e e n , b l u e , W F g r e y , and CF showed a fluctuating but significantly upward trend. Decoupling analysis indicates that the overall decoupling trend between wheat yield and water footprint and carbon footprint is not obvious. This suggests that the rapid development of wheat production in the Yarkant River Oasis has also led to significant water resource consumption, pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions. Among the three sub–irrigation districts, the Shache sub–irrigation district has the best decoupling state, reflecting that the increase in wheat yield in Shache did not lead to more water resource consumption and pollution which is may due to its abundant water resources and agriculture development. Further analysis found that the use of nitrogen fertilizers and irrigation electricity have contributed to water resource pressure and greenhouse gas emissions. This study reveals that there are significant environmental risks in the current wheat planting in the Yarkant River oasis irrigation district, but it also points out the direction for green development in the irrigation district.
