Embu ,Identity ,Mbeere ,Mau Mau ,Memorialization ,Marginalization - Abstract
This article analyzes the contested historical narrative behind the Mbeere’s role in the Mau Mau movement. Specifically, it explores the role of memorialization and marginalization in reconfiguring this past. With respect to the latter, the Mbeere were ostracized from the Mau Mau movement after the Kenyan Parliament, headed by Dedan Kimathi, sought to consolidate support by encouraging local officials to lobby bordering ethnic groups. As a result, the Mbeere, who were suspected to be pro-government and anti-Mau Mau, faced brutal reprisals from the Kikuyu and the Embu, key players in the movement. Although the physical violence may have ended, the symbolic violence of denial and ostracism persists as the Mau Mau movement’s memory is popularized and commodified through the British government’s acknowledgement of their abuse against Kenyans in the Mau Mau struggle. The dominant history of the Mau Mau rebellion is harrowing for the Mbeere Mau Mau veterans, who in fact existed and fought tenaciously against the British but were subsequently omitted from these narratives. This article draws on oral testimonies and archival sources to explore this history and potential avenues for official recognition and memorialization.

Aspects of parenting including overprotection explain individual differences in child adjustment. This review and meta‐analysis summarizes studies on parental overprotection and internalizing and externalizing problems. To ensure that findings could be compared as systematically as possible, the focus was on studies that used the overprotection scale of the Egna Minnen Beträffande Uppfostran ("Memories of my Parents' Upbringing") (EMBU) questionnaire, a popular instrument to measure parental overprotection. In total, we extracted 176 effects from 29 studies. A modified version of the Newcastle‐Ottawa Scale was used to perform quality assessments for the included studies. Parental overprotection was associated positively with offspring internalizing and externalizing problems, with overall estimates ranging from r =.14 to.18. Moderator analyses suggested that effects of maternal were larger than effects of paternal overprotection. Other factors that moderated the strength of the association between overprotection and maladjustment included whether outcomes were self‐reported or parent‐reported, the design was cross‐sectional or longitudinal, and publication year. Cultural context, age at exposure, and child sex did not explain differences between effect sizes. Most findings were based on cross‐sectional studies and therefore do not constitute proof of causal relations. Many studies were of less‐than‐satisfactory quality regarding representativeness of the sample, descriptions of the data collection, and statistical analyses. There is a clear need for well‐powered longitudinal studies to strengthen inferences about associations between parental overprotection and internalizing and externalizing problems. This article aimed to examine the relationships between Chinese parenting styles and child academic achievement through a meta-analytical review. After literature screening, 54 studies and 793 independent effect sizes that met the inclusion criteria were incorporated into the analysis (n = 24630). According to the results of the study, positive parenting styles like "emotional warmth and understanding" had prominent beneficial effects on child academic achievement, whilst negative ones such as "punishment and harshness", "overinvolvement and overprotection", "preference for the subject", "rejection and denial") were significantly unfavorable for child academic performance. In addition, the relation between parental overinvolvement and overprotection and child academic achievement was moderated by parental roles. Children's ages could moderate the relationships between parenting styles (except for overinvolvement and overprotection) and child academic results. The connection between parental preference for the subject and child academic achievement was moderated by disciplines. The effects of parents' emotional warmth and understanding as well as overinvolvement and overprotection were moderated by times. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Parental rearing behaviours characterised by high levels of rejection and overprotection have been implicated in the development and maintenance of child psychopathology, including paediatric obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD). The Egna Minnen Beträffande Uppfostran (EMBU) is a commonly used measure of perceived parental rearing. Using confirmatory factor analysis, the factor structure of the EMBU child and parent versions were examined in a sample of children and youth with OCD (n = 176), and their mothers (n = 162). Associations between rearing and clinical correlates of OCD were explored. For parents, a 4-factor model provided the best fit. For children, a higher order model was the best fit. Greater parent and child perceived negative rearing behaviours and lower perceived positive behaviours were associated with greater OCD severity, comorbid symptoms and impairment. The EMBU has a conceptually meaningful factor structure and provides a useful measure for assessing perceived rearing behaviours within paediatric OCD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As a result of the increasing constraint in the availability of fresh water for irrigation, wastewater especially sewage effluent is being used for irrigation of agriculture fields, particularly in urban and peri‑urban centers. However, there is increasing concern over the associated potential health risks due to the dietary intake of contaminated vegetables. This study was conducted to analyze the levels of copper, zinc, cadmium and lead in sewage effluent, and in the vegetables and soil irrigated using this sewage effluent. Sewage effluent, soil and plant samples were collected and subjected to acid digestion to extract the heavy metals from the samples. Thereafter, concentration levels of the heavy metals were determined using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). The mean concentrations of 0.484–1.834 mg/L, 1.432–4.612 mg/L, 0.015–0.353 mg/L, 0.011–2.123 mg/L for copper, zinc, cadmium and lead, respectively, were obtained in the sewage effluent which were above the WHO permissible levels in wastewater for irrigation. Due to continuous use of sewage effluent for irrigation, gradual accumulation of heavy metals in the soil could occur which could eventually lead to increased uptake of the heavy metals by the growing vegetables. Therefore, to ensure food safety and the use of sewage effluent for irrigation, we suggest that it is important to conduct continuous monitoring and pollution control.

A study conducted by researchers from the University of Embu in Kenya examines the adoption and impact of sustainable agricultural intensification (SAI) practices on smallholder farmers in Eastern and Western Kenya. The study finds that factors such as extension contacts, farm labor availability, household wealth, and education of household heads positively influence the adoption of SAI practices, while renting plots and poor soil quality have negative effects. The results also show that the benefits of SAI practices vary by crop system, region, and cropping year, suggesting the need for locally adaptable and profitable bundles of SAI practices. The study recommends the promotion of participatory extension policies to identify, refine, and disseminate such bundles. [Extracted from the article]

- Abstract
Over the past years, khat (Catha edulis) has been the major cash crop grown in some parts of the Eastern side of Kenya. The leaves from this plant are chewed for their stimulating effect. However, some studies have reported detrimental effects on the users of khat. This research established the level of human exposure due to radiation by natural sources in the khat growing areas of Embu County by measuring the specific activities of 238U, 232Th and 40K,estimate the dose rate absorbed and obtain the hazard indices due to these radionuclides. A total of 30 samples were collected from different areas distributed throughout Embu County, 15 for khat and 15 for soil samples. The samples were then prepared and analyzed using the Thallium activated Sodium Iodide Detector (NaI(Tl). Mean activities for khat leaves were obtained as 875.8±11 Bq/kg, 10.1±1 Bq/kg and 51.1±4 Bq/kg for 40K, 238U and 232Th respectively. The activities of soil in the same region were obtained as 344±12 Bq/kg, 22±11 Bq/kg and 33±5 Bq/kg for 40K, 238U and 232Th respectively. The mean absorbed dose rates obtained for soil was 44±0 nGyh-1 while the average Annual Effective Dose (AED) for ingested radionuclides for khat was 0.45±0.19 mSv/y. Average values of soil hazard indices for soil 0.26, 0.32, 0.70 and 0.76 for external index (Hex), internal index (Hin), gamma index (?) and Excess Lifetime Cancer Risk (ELCR) respectively. All the indices in this work were within the safe limit.

Knowledge Management (KM) is a relatively new and dynamic branch of management within the domain of knowledge. Its objective is to achieve breakthroughs in business performance using thesynergy of people, processes, and technology. It is meant to utilize individual expertise to getmaximum returns for an organization. Researchers and practitioners have already stated that KMshould be an integral part of business strategy in order to out-manage the competition. The generalobjective of this study was to examine how KM practices can reduce knowledge loss in the CountyGovernment of Embu. Its specific objective was to examine whether records management reducesknowledge loss risk. The study used a descriptive survey which is a method of collecting informationby interviewing or administering questionnaires to a sample of individuals. The questionnaires wereadministered to a sample of 42 staff drawn from all the 10 departments based at the Countyheadquarters. Stratified random sampling procedures were applied for this study to overcome theproblem of skewed sampling associated with purposive methods where employees from somedepartments are overrepresented while others are underrepresented. The study concluded that good record management practices can help in reducing knowledge loss risk in the County. The studyrecommends that the County Government should avail enough resources for the purchase of modernequipment for the storage and management of records.

Globally, food is the most basic of all human needs. However, FAO fears that global progress inreducing hunger has slowed and leveled off. In Africa, causes of food insecurity and malnutritionare multi-factorial and interlinked. World health organization asserts that the global food price crisisthreatens public health and jeopardizes the health of the most disadvantaged groups. Over 80 percentof the households in the county depend on rain-fed agriculture and related activities to achievefood security. Only about 60% of the Kenyan population can be said to be currently food secure. EmbuWest Sub County has experienced a fall in food production which is a risk of hunger and malnutrition. Therefore, the study was interested in investigating how the socio-cultural factors affect foodsecurity and nutrition in Embu West Sub County. This will inform policy formulation in Embu Countyand Kenya as a whole. The study used a qualitative research design. A purposive sampling techniquewas used to select the study subjects. Interview schedules were used to collect data. The study foundthat Khat chewing, alcohol uptake, and FGM had a negative impact on food security and nutrition. The study recommends awareness creation on the effects of chewing Khat, alcohol uptake, and FGM inEmbu West Sub County.

- Abstract
Background:Using diagnoses exclusively, comparable evaluations of the empirical evidence relevant to the content can be made. The term holocaust survivor syndrome according to the DSM-IV classification encompasses people with diagnoses of posttraumatic stress disorders and psychopathological symptoms exposed to the Nazi genocide from 1933–1945 identified by Natan Kellermann, AMCHA, Israel (1999).Methods:The relationships between disorders of affectionate parenting and the development of dysfunctional models on one hand, and various psychopathological disorders on the other hand were investigated. Multi-axial assessment based on PTSD diagnosis (APA, 2000) with DSM-IV classification criteria of holocaust survivor syndrome and child survivor syndrome earlier found in holocaust survivors was used as criteria for comparison among Finnish sub-populations.Results:Symptoms similar to those previously described in association with holocaust survivor syndrome and child survivor syndrome were found in the population of Finnish people who had been displaced as children between 1939–1945.Conclusions:Complex PTSD syndrome is found among survivors of prolonged or repeated trauma who have coping strategies intended to assist their mental survival. Surviving Finnish child evacuees had symptoms at similar level to those reported among holocaust survivors, though Finnish combat veterans exhibited good mental adjustment with secure attachment. Introduction. The aim of this study was to identify the relationship between perceived rearing styles and the clinical expression of Eating Disorders (ED). Methods. One hundred and ninety-six patients diagnosed of an ED and 127 healthy student as controls selected from the Nursing College were evaluated for general psychopathology (STAI, BDI II, RSE), and for abnormal eating attitudes (EAT, EDI-II, BITE). The EMBU (‘my memories of upbringing') was administered for the assessment of perceived parental rearing styles and we used a questionnaire to assess familial variables. Results. In relation to the control group, patients with ED perceived greater rejection, overprotection and less warmth than the controls. Patients who perceived greater paternal favoritism, maternal overprotection and low paternal emotional warmth, showed higher levels of anxiety. Paternal affection and maternal attitudes of rejection, overprotection and favoritism were related with lower selfesteem. Regarding abnormal eating attitudes, body dissatisfaction inversely correlated with paternal emotional care and maternal favoritism. The EDI subscales: ineffectiveness, perfectionism and ascetism were associated with parental rejection. Maternal rejection also related with drive for thinness, interoceptive awareness and impulse regulation. Perceived emotional warmth was related with perfectionism. Bulimia subscale and BITE scores were inversely associated with paternal overprotection and affection, and scored significantly higher in paternal favoritism and rejection from both parents. Conclusions. Perceived parental bonding is different in the various subtypes of EDs. Patients diagnosed of Bulimia Nervosa or Eating Disorders Not Otherwise Specified perceived greater rejection, less affection and a greater overprotection than Anorexia Nervosa patients and controls. This paper investigates the gradient nature of acceptability judgements and grammatical variants in the bilectal population of Cyprus, by comparatively discussing the findings of two recent experiments on (i) exhaustivity effects in Cypriot Greek clefts and embu 'it is that'-structures (Leivada et al. 2013) and (ii) clitic placement and how it is affected by lexical and syntactic stimulation (Papadopoulou et al. 2014). The analysis lays emphasis on the intra-dialectal variation observed across speakers' performance in both experiments. Variation is discussed in relation to socio-syntactic aspects of language use, such as (i) the existence of competing grammars (Tsiplakou 2007, in press) and competing motivations (Grohmann & Leivada 2012, to appear) in bilectal environments such as the one in Cyprus, (ii) the notion of gradience existent within a dialect-standard continuum (e.g. Cornips 2006 for Dutch, Leivada et al. 2013 for Greek), and (iii) syntactic/semantic factors that inform our participants' performance. Abstract: This study examined the association between recollected parental child-rearing strategies and individual differences in self-regulation, socio-emotional adjustment, and psychopathology in early adulthood. Undergraduate participants (N =286) completed the EMBU – a measure of retrospective accounts of their parents’ child-rearing behaviors – as well as self-report measures of self-regulation and socio-emotional adjustment across the domains of eating disorder symptoms, physically risky behavior, interpersonal problems, personal financial problems, and academic maladjustment. A subset of participants also completed the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2-Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF). Parental warmth was found to be related to overall better self-regulation and improved interpersonal and academic adjustment. In contrast, both parental rejection and overcontrol were found to be related to general deficits in self-regulation as well as adjustment difficulties and psychopathology. Parental rejection was most closely related to internalizing clinical presentations like anxiety, depression, and somatization, whereas overcontrol was most aligned with increased hypomanic activation and psychoticism. Mediation analyses demonstrated that the relationships between parental child-rearing strategies and socio-emotional adjustment and psychopathology were partially mediated by self-regulation. Future directions are suggested, including basic and translational research related to better understanding the roles of parental child-rearing and self-regulation in the development of internalizing symptoms, activation, and psychotic symptoms. Background: The aim of this study was to identify long-term effects of diagnostic criteria on the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist (PCL-C) for a test group of Finnish evacuees from World War II and compare the outcome effect with a control group of children who lived in Finland during the war in 1939–1945.Methods: 152 participants were recruited by the local leader of the Finnish War Child Association in Sweden and Finland. The selected group answered questions on the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist (PCL-C) and the EMBU (Swedish acronym for “Own Memories of Parental Rearing”).Results: Evidence suggests a link between childhood parental separation and termination of the internalized attachment hierarchy of origin in a detachment process among Finnish evacuees. Based on the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Total (PCL-C) diagnosis an extreme traumatization for 36.7% of the test group subjects was identified, including a hidden Holocaust trauma in the population of Finnish evacuees. Conclusions: The study met the criteria for satisfying global evidence value. Sixty-five years after the end of World War II and in line with other studies on war children, the data show high levels of different trauma exposures from the war with 10.6 higher risk (odds ratio) for the exposed group of Finnish evacuees. Despite some limitations, the data highlight the need for further investigation into different parts of the detachment process among seriously traumatized groups to reveal resilience and other dimensions of importance in professional mental health creation. Since parents' rearing styles may affect adolescents' behavior and socialization, it is relevant to know how some psychological variables are related to parent rearing styles. This study is aimed to explore this point by analysing altogether parents' rearing styles (EMBU-P), social values (social power, order, benevolence, and conservatism-liberalism), Big-five personality traits, and marital satisfaction (consensus, affection, satisfaction, and cohesion) in parents of adolescents. This is a prospective study based in correlational analysis method. It was found that rearing styles defined by warmth and acceptance are related to a responsible and emotionally stable personality profile, high marital satisfaction, and the preference for prosocial values. On the contrary, overprotected and favouring rearing styles are related to low friendliness, low emotional stability and low openness, poor marital adjustment with a lack of cohesion, and social values defined by a lack of benevolence, and the preference for social power. Abstract: This study was designed to investigate the relationships of the socialisation process with the Big-Five personality traits, empathy, parent-rearing styles and social values. The main aim was to detect which variables predict better socialisation outcomes. A socialisation battery for adolescents (BAS-3), the Big-Five Questionnaire (BFQ), Bryant’s Index of Empathy (IECA), the Egna Minnen av Barndoms Uppfostran-My memories of upbringing (EMBU) and a Social Values Inventory (SVI) were applied to 832 Spanish adolescents. Also, 134 parent couples agreed to fill out the version of the socialisation battery for adolescents’ parents (BAS-2). Results show that personality dispositions, parent-rearing styles and social values were related to socialisation reported by children. Patterns of relationships showed that different variables account for different socialisation outcomes. However, when these variables were related to the socialisation outcomes reported by parents, relationships were considerably lower. The implications of the present study are discussed. The aim of the present study was to analyze the psychometric properties of different versions of the EMBU (Egna Minnen av Barndoms Uppfostran – My memories of upbringing) in a non-clinical sample of adolescents. The factor structure of the questionnaire was studied by means of more adequate exploratory and confirmatory factor procedures in order to ascertain which version achieves a better fit to data. The 64-item version of the EMBU was administered to a non-clinical sample of 832 adolescents. Exploratory and Confirmatory factor analyses were carried out for successive versions of 64, 37, 24 and 23 items. The theoretical four-factor structure of the 64-item version is not replicated in a factor analysis through principal axis extraction with direct oblimin rotation. The “Favoring Subject” factor was not found. 37 items present loadings equal to or larger than 0.30 for the “Rejection”, “Emotional Warmth” and “Overprotection” factors. A re-analysis of these items shows a clear three-factor structure. When Arrindell et al.'s (1999 ) 23-item version was analysed, the three expected factors were also found. Confirmatory factor analyses allow us to reduce the 36-item version to a shorter one of 24 items. This last version achieves the best fit to data, including the 23-item version. The new 24-item version improves the construct validity of the EMBU and presents similar reliability coefficients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: This study explores the relationships between memories of parental-rearing (measured through the EMBU), social values and socialised behaviour traits in an adolescent population, and also the psychometric properties of a measure of social values in the adolescent population. Four hundred and eight boys and 424 girls from the general population constituted the sample. Social values were assessed by a new self-report questionnaire composed of 30 items. A previous analysis of this measure revealed a three factor structure (Benevolence, Social power, and Security) with good psychometric properties. Behaviour traits were assessed by the participants’ teachers. Results show that aggressive subjects remember their parents as more rejecting, overprotective, favouring, and less warm. On the contrary, benevolent subjects were more responsible, sensitive, sociable, and their parent-rearing style was seen as warmer. Social values were moderately predicted by Emotional Warmth and Rejection. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

SENSORY perception , *FACTORIALS , *PSYCHOLOGY - Abstract
The most frequently used questionnaires for the characterisation of rearing, the EMBU and the PBI, offer different factorial solutions. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the validity of the construct of both rearing scales. We start with the replies of 738 subjects to the two scales to test their construct validity. The models, which have been internationally accepted, derived from both scales and are subjected to a Structural Equation Modelling Method. Although (from a formal point of view) there is little difference between the two models analysed, the trifactorial model of EMBU shows a closer fit to the data. The trifactorial solution of the EMBU seems more adequate than the bifactorial of the PBI. The origin of the factorial solutions of both models and the consequences of these results are discussed. PARENT-child relationships & psychology , *CHILD rearing - Abstract
A possible link between experiences of dysfunctional parental rearing and late behavioural outcomes could consist of the development of dysfunctional assumptions about self and others in relationship. This hypothesis has previously been addressed in psychiatric patients. Accordingly, the confounding influence of mental status on the endorsement of dysfunctional assumptions cannot be wholly excluded. The present study, in which a community sample of 233 subjects was enrolled, was planned to contribute to clarifying this issue. Subjects completed the EMBU to assess perceptions of parental rearing and two measures of dysfunctional assumptions, or dysfunctional working models: the DAS and the DWM-S. It was predicted that experiences of caring parental rearing would be negatively correlated with scores on both the DAS and the DWM-S. Conversely, it was predicted that experiences of dysfunctional parenting would be positively correlated with scores on the two scales. Both predictions were supported by the results. Perceptions of dysfunctional maternal rearing contribute most to high scores both on the DAS and the DWM-S. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the character and extent of negative thought content in panic disorder (PD) and the relation between thinking and bodily sensations. Content of thinking was explored in several areas, some of which are not exclusively related to anxiety. A structured diagnostic interview (SCID), a self-rating scale (SCL-90R), a sentence construction test (The Incomplete Sentences Blank (ISB)), and an inventory of childhood memories of parental rearing (the EMBU) were administered to 47 PD patients, 15 patients with major depression (MD), and 30 normal subjects. Thus, measures of implicit as well as explicit thinking, measures of thinking on present as well as past issues, and methods allowing negative as well as positive thought content to be expressed, were used. We found that PD was characterized by more negative thinking of anxiogenic, depressive, and dependent nature and less neutral or positive thinking than the normal subjects, primarily in issues related to the present. These negative thoughts were correlated with bodily symptoms. Very few significant differences were found between PD and MD, but a subgroup of PD with comorbidity of MD exceeded the other groups on measures of negative thoughts as well as bodily symptoms. - Abstract
A new inventory aimed at the assessment of perceived parental rearing practices (EMBU) and an inventory aimed at assessing psychogenic needs (CMPS) were completed by 152 healthy subjects of both sexes (108 males and 44 females). The series was comprised of 73 conscripts, 57 medical students, 15 vocational therapy students and 7 staff personnel who were 17-46 years old. Several significant correlations were found between dimensions of parental rearing behaviour and personality characteristics, most of them being consistent with earlier findings by other authors. Although statistically significant, the correlation coefficients were mostly low, leaving a large amount of unexplained variance. The findings of this study support the general assumption that the perception of parental rearing practices is an important factor in the shaping of personality make-up but that other, still unexplored factors might have an even greater importance in the determination of habitual personality characteristics. Parenting Practices are defined as specific strategies and actions that parents use to minimize their children misbehaviours and to promote desired behaviours. The present study aims to assess Parenting Practices in forensic settings with families involved in child protection and in child custody legal processes. This study is based on a sample of 134 participants that answered Egna Minnen Bertraffande Uppfostran – EMBU (The perception’s evaluation questionnaire of Parental Practices) in the Psychological Evaluation Service for Court Consulting from Faculty of Psychology and Education Science’s Community Service Centre. Depending on participants’ age, we used EMBU-own memories of childrearing experiences version, EMBU-parents version and EMBU-children version, with adults replying to a Social Desirability Scale (DESCA) as well. The results suggest that children perceived significantly more emotional warmth from their mothers than from their fathers as assessed with EMBU-children version. In EMBU-own memories of childrearing experiences version, adults don’t seem to recall significant differences between their parents in providing emotional warmth, but they do in the rejection factor, remembering more attempts to change their will and behaviour from their mothers than from their fathers. When comparing families in child protection legal cases and families in child custody legal cases, we only found statistically significant differences at Control Attempts scale from EMBU-Parents version, with parents involved in child protection cases viewing themselves as more controlling towards their children’s behaviour modification. Besides this, we found no statistically significant differences between these two groups.

The main purpose of this study is to identify the relations between mother´s and father´s parental rearing using a retrospective perception of the individual´s childhood and adolescence, so we can verify the relation with the personality dimensions, nowadays as an adult. The focus of this study is the relation of the emotional warmth dimension with the personality dimensions amiability and openness to experience. We used the Inventory for Assessing Memories of Parental Rearing Behavior (EMBU) adapted by Canavarro (1996) and the Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI) of Personality adapted by Lima (2002). The results of this study showed that: there is a positive correlation between emotional warmth with openness to experience and amiability, there is a positive correlation between nowadays relation with the parents and the emotional warmth received by the parents in childhood, and there is a positive relation between the socioeconomic status and the emotional warmth from both parents during childhood. We have concluded that there are factors other than the parental rearing that help the development of personality as an adult., Orientação: Bárbara Gonzalez

The socio-economic status of family has an effect on the mental health. Individuals from “low-S.E.S” families are more prone to depression and anxiety disorders. This study observes the relation between perceived parenting style and depressive moods in Turkish adolescents from 3 different S.E.S levels. A total of 150 subjects representing 3 different S.E.S levels were given the “My Memories of Upbringing”, Children Depression Inventory, and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory tests. Results indicate that school guidance and psychological counseling services should develop policies addressing parents for giving insight about their parenting style which in turn might result in preventive mental healthcare.

Objective: To explore the impact of growing up with a parent with a bipolar disorder. First, we compared parental rearing behavior perceived by young adult offspring of bipolar parents with parental rearing behavior perceived by same aged young adults from the general population. Secondly, we examined the associations between perceived parental rearing behavior and parental psychopathology and psychopathology in offspring.Method: Subjects were 129 offspring of 80 bipolar parents and their spouses and 1122 young adults from the general population. In offspring the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV was used to assess DSM-IV diagnoses and the EMBU was used to assess perceived parental rearing in both groups. Results: In general, offspring growing up in a family with a bipolar parent perceived their mothers as less rejecting, more emotionally warm and less overprotecting and their fathers as less emotionally warm and less overprotecting compared with young adults from the general population. Perceived rejection was related to psychopathology in offspring. Conclusion: Overall, parental rearing in families with a parent with a bipolar disorder is not more dysfunctional, as perceived by their offspring, than in families from the general population. Offspring with a bipolar disorder perceive their parents as more rejecting.

To investigate the epidemiologic profile of elderly persons who do or do not participate in influenza vaccination campaigns and to identify the variables that bear an influence on participation. Method. A cross-sectional population-based study was performed using data on individuals aged 60 years or older who were living in the municipalities of São Paulo, Itapecerica da Serra, Embu, Taboão da Serra, Campinas and Botucatu, Brazil, in 2001 and 2002. A stratified random sample of 1 908 elderly individuals was selected by means of two-stage cluster sampling. Exploratory data analysis was performed, including bivariate analysis and multiple logistic regression. Results. Sixty-six percent of the elderly subjects reported having received vaccination against influenza. After adjustment, the following factors were found to be associated with having received vaccination, based on self-report: age (OR = 1.47; 95% CI = 1.09 to 1.99), self-reported hypertension (OR = 1.39; 95% CI = 1.03 to 1.87) and educational level (OR = 0.64; 95% CI = 0.41 to 0.98). The highest number of vaccinated individuals was observed in the group = 70 years of age and in the hypertension group. Individuals with 9 or more years of schooling reported less adherence to influenza vaccination. Conclusions. The results suggest the need for campaigns to make information on the benefits of influenza vaccination more easily accessible to the elderly and health professionals. The short(s)-EMBU (Swedish acronym for Egna Minnen Betraffande Uppfostran [My memories of upbringing]) consists of 23 items, is based on the early 81-item EMBU, and was developed out of the necessity of having a brief measure of perceived parental rearing practices when the clinical and/or research context does not adequately permit application of time-consuming test batteries. The s-EMBU comprises three subscales: Rejection., Emotional Warmth, and (Over)Protection. The factorial and/or construct validity and reliability of the s-EMBU were examined in samples comprising a total of 1950 students from Australia, Spain, and Venezuela. The data were presented for the three national groups separately. Findings confirmed the cross-national validity of the factorial structure underlying the s-EMBU. Rejection by fathers and mothers was consistently associated with high trait-neuroticism and low self-esteem in recipients of both sexes in each nation, as was high parental emotional warmth with high femininity (humility). The findings on factorial validity are in keeping with previous ones obtained in East Germany, Greece, Guatemala, Hungary, Italy, and Sweden. The s-EMBU is again recommended for use in several different countries as. a reliable, functional equivalent to the original 81-item EMBU.

The Attachment Theory (Bowlby, 1990) sets forth the importance of parental involvement (Rock, Mota, & Matos, 2011) and how it affects the self-esteem of the adult subject (Demidenko, Tasca, Kennedy, & Bissada, 2010).The main purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between attachment, memories of parental care and self-esteem. This research allowed us to recognize the distinction between secure and insecure individuals and how these patterns relate to the presented variables. For this aim a sample of 200 individuals were used, 45 (22.5%) were male and 155 (77.5%) females, ranging in age from 18 to 59 years (SD=10.00). For this investigation a socio-demographic questionnaire was prepared and also applied three measures: Escala de Vinculação do Adulto (EVA; Canavarro., 1995), Memórias de Infância (EMBU; Canavarro., 1996; 1999) and Questionário de Autoestima Global de Rosenberg (RSES; Faria., 2000). The results suggest statistically significant differences between Secure and Insecure subjects in the parental rearing behaviour and self-esteem. A relationship among the variables attachment, parental rearing behavior and self-esteem were also found. This work recognized the influence and importance of attachment in the parental care and consequent development of self-esteem in the adult subject., Orientação: Fernanda Salvaterra

The factorial stability and reliability of the 23-item s(hort)-EMBU previously demonstrated to be satisfactory in samples of students from Greece, Guatemala. Hungary and Italy, were extended with 791 students from East-Germany and Sweden. Previous findings on factorial validity, internal reliability and correlations among scales were replicated. The 23-item form thus continues to be recommended as a reliable functional equivalent to the early 81-item EMBU, when the clinical and/or research context does nor adequately permit application of time-consuming test batteries.

- Abstract
Kenya is considered to be a developing country. This means that basic needs such as nutrition are not met for an extended period of time (www, Sida 1, 2012). Approximately half of the population is living under the poverty line (www, CIA 1, 2012). Agriculture is the largest sector in the country, employing 75% of the population. These are thereby directly dependent on the sufficiency of outputs received. This makes efficient, easy-accessible and cheap agricultural practices an important matter in order to improve food security. Maize is the prime staple food commodity in Kenya and represents a substantial share of people’s nutritional intake. It exist a number of improved maize seeds on the market, that grow plants with a better pest resistance and provides a higher yield for the farmers. This study is the result of questionnaire based interviews with 52 small scale Kenyan farmers. The study was located to two separated areas; Bondo in western Kenya, and Kibugu in central Kenya. The questionnaire captured the farmers’ use and perceived importance of the use of soil-fertility enhancing practices and improved seeds. Willingness to pay for two types of improved maize seeds was measured through a payment card. It was required to use different seeds for the two areas due to diverse climate conditions. Through the results a number of factors was determined that decides how farmer choose which practices to use. Those were familiarity, monetary cost, accessibility, time consumption and social acceptance. Practices that already were used to a large extent received high importance while expensive and time consuming practices received low importance. Farmers have constraints in their production which sometimes prevent them from using the practices wished for. These are mainly time, money and for Kibugu also the amount of land. The Willingness to pay for the seeds was 98 Kenya Shillings per kilogram for Kibugu and 87 for Bondo. Lantbrukarna uttryckte a

49. CROSS-NATIONAL VALIDITY OF DIMENSIONS OF FAMILY FUNCTIONING - 1ST EXPERIENCES WITH THE DUTCH VERSION OF THE MCMASTER FAMILY ASSESSMENT DEVICE (FAD)

The present study describes the first psychometric findings obtained in The Netherlands with the Dutch version of the Family Assessment Device (FAD) which was originally developed in the Anglo-American cultural context. In a sample of community volunteers, confirmatory analysis (multiple-group method) provided evidence of factorial validity of the FAD measuring constructs. Only 3 out of 60 items were found to be biased and had to be deleted from their a priori defined scales. Reliability and homogeneity indices pertaining to each FAD dimension were good. Despite (very) high correlations among FAD factors/scales, further analyses were focused on determining their convergent and divergent validity which offered good support for such. A higher-order analysis which incorporated reliable scales of the FAD and the Family Environment Scale yielded a two-factor composition: General Family Functioning and Family Influence/Power and Integration. There was evidence to support the viewpoint that a general measure of family functioning may be utilized which is broader in terms of content than the already existing subscale measure termed General Functioning. In line with findings pointing to the ability of the FAD to distinguish between families of psychiatric patients and nonclinical families, the great majority of the FAD subscales, especially Problem Solving and General Functioning, were found to correlate with psychological symptom states as assessed with the Symptom Checklist-90-R. Specific subscales were found to be affected by educational level, while none were affected by sex, age, or religious affiliation. All in all, the findings confirm the further use of the FAD in the Dutch national context.

The relationship consistently found between adult depression and recalled parental rearing styles cannot, as yet, confirm that early parenting plays a role in the etiology of depression. Memories of adverse childhood experiences may be epiphenomena of depression. The connotative meaning of questionnaire items assessing recalled parenting may be an important moderator variable in this respect. In the present study the connotation of the items of two frequently used questionnaires measuring memories of parental rearing styles (i.e. the Parental Bonding Instrument and the EMBU) were evaluated by independent raters. With high interrater-agreement, it was shown that most items and subscales have a very clear positive or negative connotation. Comparisons across the two instruments revealed that homologous subscales do not differ from one another in terms of connotative meaning. Implications and suggestions for future research in this area are discussed.
