We study the decay $B^\pm\to \phi K^{\ast\pm}$, followed by the decay of the outgoing vector mesons into two pseudoscalars. The analysis of angular distributions of the decay products is shown to provide useful information about the annihilation contributions and possible tests of factorization., Comment: 9 pages, 1 table

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
We present the Generalized Borel Transform (GBT). This new approach allows one to obtain approximate solutions of Laplace/Mellin transform valid in both, perturbative and non perturbative regimes. We compare the results provided by the GBT for a solvable model of quantum mechanics with those provided by standard techniques, as the conventional Borel sum, or its modified versions. We found that our approach is very efficient for obtaining both the low and the high energy behavior of the model., Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures

Astrophysics ,High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
Despite many efforts to find a reasonable explanation, the origin of the "knee" in the cosmic ray spectrum at energy around 10**15.5 eV remains mysterious. In this letter we suggest that the "knee" may be due to a GZK-like effect of cosmic rays interacting with massive neutrinos in the galactic halo. Simple kinematics connects the location of the "knee" with the mass of the neutrinos, and, while the required interaction cross section is larger than that predicted by the Standard Model, it can be accommodated by a small neutrino magnetic dipole moment. The values for the neutrino parameters obtained from the analysis of existing experimental data are compatible with present laboratory bounds., Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure, uses RevTex

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
Resonance-mediated many body decays of heavy mesons are analyzed. We focus on some particular processes, in which the available phase space for the decay of the intermediate resonance is very narrow. It is shown that the mass selection criteria used in several experimental studies of D and B meson decays could lead to a significant underestimation of branching ratios., Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure

Astrophysics ,High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
The increasing cosmic ray statistics collected by present experiments and the future prospects with new large arrays demand accurate calculations of the extensive air shower parameters. The energy of the primary particle is estimated by ground arrays fitting a lateral distribution function (LDF) to the particle densities at a given observing level. However, the lack of appropriate parameterization for these distributions, able to reproduce the data collected from all arrival directions, makes it difficult the experimental analysis. Starting from analytical LDF for vertical showers we study the atmospheric depth dependence of the shower parameters, which is necessary to obtain the corresponding particle density distributions for inclined showers. In our approach both geometrical and atmospheric attenuation effects producing a lateral asymmetry in non-vertical showers are included. The resulting electron and muon LDF fit very well the Monte Carlo simulated data at all zenith angles., Comment: 35 pages, 12 eps figures; a new section containing comparison with experimental data added, to appear in Astroparticle Physics

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
We reconsider the Euler-Lagrange equation for the Skyrme model in the hedgehog ansatz and study the analytical properties of the solitonic solution. In view of the lack of a closed form solution to the problem, we work on approximate analytical solutions. We show that Pade approximants are well suited to continue analytically the asymptotic representation obtained in terms of a power series expansion near the origin, obtaining explicit approximate solutions for the Skyrme equations. We improve the approximations by applying the 2-point Pade approximant procedure whereby the exact behaviour at spatial infinity is incorporated. An even better convergence to the exact solution is obtained by introducing a modified form for the approximants. The new representations share the same analytical properties with the exact solution at both small and large values of the radial variable r., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures. 1 Reference added

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
The heavy quark potential and particularly the one proposed by Richardson to incorporate both asymptotic freedom and linear confinement is analyzed in terms of a generalized Borel Transform recently proposed. We were able to obtain, in the range of physical interest, an approximate analytical expression for the potential in coordinate space valid even for intermediate distances. The deviation between our approximate potential and the numerical evaluation of the Richardson's one is much smaller than $\Lambda $ of QCD. The $c\overline{c}$ and $b\overline{b}$ quarkonia energy levels agree reasonably well with experimental data for $c$ and $b$ masses in good agreement with the values obtained from experiments., Comment: 9 pages, 3 Table

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
Studies of the influence of different hadronic models on extensive air showers at ultra-high energies are presented. The hadronic models considered are those implemented in the well-known QGSJET and SIBYLL event generators. The different approaches used in both codes to model the underlying physics is analyzed using computer simulations performed with the program AIRES. The most relevant observables for both single collisions and air showers are studied for primary energies ranging from $10^{14}$ eV up to $10^{20.5}$ eV. In addition, the evolution of lateral and energy distributions during the shower development is presented. Our analysis seems to indicate that the behaviour of shower observables does not largely reflect the strong differences observed in single collisions., Comment: 31 RevTex pages - 14 ps figures

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
We have computed semi-inclusive spin asymmetries for proton and deuteron targets including next to leading order (NLO) QCD corrections and contributions coming from the target fragmentation region. These corrections have been estimated using NLO fragmentation functions, parton distributions and also a model for spin dependent fracture functions which is proposed here. We have found that NLO corrections are small but non-negligible in a scheme where gluons are polarised and that our estimate for target fragmentation effects does not modify significantly charged asymmetries but affects the so called difference asymmetries., Comment: Latex, 14 pages, 6 figures in 4 Postcript files

The finite temperature and finite density dependence of the neutron-proton mass difference is analysed in a purely hadronic framework where the $\rho-\omega $ mixing is crucial for this isospin symmetry breakdown. The problem is handled within Thermo Field Dynamics. The present results, consistent with partial chiral and charge symmetry restoration, improve the experimental data fit for the energy difference between mirror nuclei., Comment: 17 pages, revtex file

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
A method is presented to extract the tau neutrino helicity, or equivalently, the chirality parameter $\gamma_{\mathrm{VA}}$, independent of any tau polarization which may be present. The method is thus well-suited to measurements using taus produced from the $Z^0$ and is complementary to analyses using tau correlations since it provides the sign of the chirality parameter which is otherwise unavailable without recourse to lower energy experiments where taus are unpolarized. Results of Monte Carlo studies and comments regarding the use of the technique in experiments are also included., Comment: 13 pages, uuencoded postscript file

We analyze spin dependent parton distributions consistent with the most recent measurements of the spin dependent deep inelastic scattering structure functions and obtained in the framework of the spin dilution model. Predictions for the doubly polarised proton-proton Drell-Yan asymmetry, for the high $p_{T}$ photon production mechanism and $J/\Psi$ excitation are calculated using these distributions and are shown to be particularly adequate to unveil the polarisation of partons in the proton., Comment: 13 pages and 7 figures (not included, available upon request DEFLO@venus.fisica.edu.ar)

Three months of data taken by the Engineering Array Surface Detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory have been analyzed with the aim of setting a procedure for the study of showers at E_0 ~ 10^18 eV. We present the results, concerning: (i) the selection procedure and the check of its efficiency; (ii) the event rate and its stability; (iii) the characteristics of such events (i.e., angular direction, energy estimator S(1000), rise time vs core distance, correlation with pressure) showing their consistency with the expectations. The performances of the whole Surface Detector of the Auger Observatory are discussed., Comment: Talk given at 28th International Cosmic Ray Conferences (ICRC 2003), Tsukuba, Japan, 31 Jul - 7 Aug 2003

The Pierre Auger Southern Observatory in Argentina has begun taking data as it is being developed up to a final enclosed area of 3000 square kilometres. A key aspect of the project is to provide information on the origin of the highest energy cosmic rays through understanding the arrival directions of those particles. To avoid claims of a spurious anisotropy detection because trials have not been properly accounted, the Auger Collaboration has agreed 'a priori' to the analysis prescription presented here. It specifies the following: 1. The accumulation time for the (future) data set to be analyzed. 2. The anisotropy 'targets', each assigned a chance probability level. 3. The analysis procedure for each trial. A positive result will be claimed for any target search only if its chance probability is less than its assigned level. The levels are chosen so that the total chance probability for one or more positive results is 0.001. Exploratory searches beyond this prescription will be encouraged, but the Auger Collaboration will not assign any confidence level to anisotropies that may be discovered that way. Any such discovery would identify a good target for a prescription to be used with a subsequent Auger data set., 4 pages

Major uncertainties in the fluorescence energy measurement come from the precision of various atmospheric transmission, air Cerenkov subtraction, light multiple-scattering and cloud corrections. The Auger program for atmospheric monitoring, designed to measure these corrections and to minimize these uncertainties, is summarized in this paper., Four (4) pages, and three (3) EPS figures. The absolute calibration of an air fluorescence detector (FD) is an important element in correctly determining the energy of detected cosmic rays. The absolute calibration relates the flux of photons of a given wavelength at the detector aperture to the electronic signal recorded by the FD data acquisition system. For the Auger FDs, the primary absolute calibration method uses a diffusive surface which is placed in front of a telescope aperture to uniformly illuminate the telescope field of view with a known light signal. This single-wavelength measurement (375 nm) will be made at intervals of several months until the stability of the telescopes is determined. The relative wavelength dependence of the calibration is determined through independent measurements. The error in absolute calibration at a single wavelength is estimated to be less than 10%. Two other absolute calibration methods are used to provide an independent verification of the primary measurement. The stability of the calibration with time is monitored nightly by a relative calibration system. In this paper we will provide descriptions of the absolute and relative calibration methods used by the Auger air fluorescence observatory. Results from the calibration of the Auger Engineering Array telescopes will also be presented., Comment: 4 pages, no figures. Presented at the 28th International Cosmic Ray Conference

The Pierre Auger Observatory is a``hybrid'' UHECR detector. The surface detector (SD) and air fluorescence detector (FD) of the observatory are designed for observation of cosmic ray showers in coincidence, with a 10% duty cycle. The resulting data are expected to be superior in quality to those of either the SD or FD operating individually. Hybrid operation, triggering, data acquisition, and event reconstruction were successfully demonstrated during the prototype phase of the project. This paper focuses on 75 hybrid events recorded during a four month period of running with the prototype detectors in late 2001 and early 2002. The geometric technique for reconstruction of the hybrid events is described and its advantages over the traditional FD-only method are demonstrated. A lateral distribution for the water Cherenkov signals, derived from these data, is presented., Comment: Talk given at 28th International Cosmic Ray Conferences (ICRC 2003), Tsukuba, Japan, 31 Jul - 7 Aug 2003
