The South Asian high (SAH) index was defined using the 200 hPa geopotential height for 1973–2019. Of the movements of the SAH center in the north–south, east–west, northwest-southeast, and southwest-northeast directions, the movements in the northwest-southeast direction showed the highest positive correlation with heatwave days (HWDs) in South Korea. Thirteen years with the highest values in the northwestward shift of the SAH (positive SAH years) and 13 years with the highest values in the southeastward shift of the SAH (negative SAH years) were selected from a time series of SAH indices from which the linear trend was removed, and the differences between these two groups were analyzed. An analysis of vertical meridional circulation averaged along 120°–130° E showed that in the latitude zones containing Korea, anomalous downward flows with anomalous high pressures formed in the entire troposphere and coincided with a positive anomaly of air temperature and specific humidity. An analysis of stream flows and geopotential heights showed that in the positive SAH years, anomalous anticyclones developed in Korea, the North Pacific, North America, Western Europe, and the Iranian Plateau. These anticyclones had the wavenumber-5 pattern and showed more distinct barotropic vertical structures at higher altitudes, which resembled the circumglobal teleconnection (CGT) pattern. The maintenance of CGT depends on the interaction between the CGT circulation and the Indian summer monsoon (ISM), which has a major influence on the mid-latitude atmosphere. Strengthening of the ISM results in the formation of upper-level anomalous anticyclones in the northwestern Iranian Plateau and produces continuous downstream cells along the waveguide due to the Rossby wave dispersion. When diabatic heating by Indian summer monsoon precipitation is strengthened, the SAH is strengthened to the northwest of India, and a positive CGT pattern is formed. As a result, anomalous anticyclones formed in all layers of the Korean troposphere, resulting in heatwaves, tropical nights, and droughts exacerbated in South Korea.

Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) generates image features widely used to match objects in different images. Previous work on hardware based SIFT implementation requires excessive internal memory and hardware logic [1]. In this paper, a new hardware organization is proposed to implement SIFT with less memory and hardware cost than the previous work. To this end, a parallel Gaussian filter bank is adopted to eliminate the buffers that store intermediate results because parallel operations allow all intermediate results available at the same time. Furthermore, the processing order is changed from the raster-scan order to the block-by-block order so that the line buffer size storing the source image is also reduced. These techniques trade the reduction of memory size with a slight increase of the execution time and external memory bandwidth. As a result, the memory size is reduced by 94.4%. The proposed hardware for SIFT implementation includes the Descriptor generation block, which is omitted in the previous work [1]. The addition of the hardwired descriptor generation improves the computation speed by about 30 times when compared with the previous work.

In this paper, a new hardware organization is proposed to implement the keypoint detection in SIFT with a less memory and hardware cost than the previous work. To this end, a parallel Gaussian filter bank is adopted to eliminate the buffers that store intermediate results because parallel operations allow all intermediate results available at the same time. The processing order of the vertical filtering ahead of the horizontal operation also reduces the storage space. The computational complexity is reduced by sharing the Gaussian filter bank for multiple octaves. As a result, the memory size is reduced by more than 80 percent without a complexity increase in hardware design.

Hand posture classification is popular in systems that require an effective human-machine interface. Previous classification algorithms suffer from inaccurate results when it is difficult to distinguish a hand from a wrist. To overcome this difficulty, this paper proposes a new algorithm for hand posture classification that uses a histogram of convex defects around the segment of a hand to be classified. As the characteristics of convex defects do not vary significantly depending on inclusion of a wrist, the proposed algorithm does not suffer substantially from a reduced classification accuracy. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm is also rotation-invariant. Experimental results show that the correct classification ratio is 97.06% on average.

The SoC presented in this paper integrates an H.264 encoder with an ISP (Image Signal Processor). It is currently implemented in an FPGA and processes an HD-size (1280 × 720) image at the speed of 15 fps with the operating clock frequency of 50 MHz. In the presented demo system, a Bayer input from a CMOS image is given to the FPGA and the output stream is transmitted through an USB transceiver to a PC that decodes and displays the H.264 stream.
