With the aim of enhance the designability of burning surface, star and wagon wheel fuel types are applied extensively in hybrid rocket motors. However, mechanism of nozzle ablation in hybrid rocket motors with these complex fuel types is unclear, and this increases the difficulty of predicting ablation laws and thrust. This paper intends to investigate spatial distribution characteristics of nozzle ablation in the hybrid rocket motor with various fuel types. According to the principle that the grain port area and grain length are equal, tube, star, single-port wagon wheel, and multi-port wagon wheel grains are designed. Numerical models for combustion flow and thermochemical erosion are established, and three-dimensional numerical simulations are conducted. A firing test for nozzle erosion is conducted, and hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene and 95 % hydrogen peroxide are employed. Errors of throat erosion rate and combustion chamber pressure among simulation results and experimental data are 4 % and 4.25 %, respectively. Calculation results demonstrate that the circumferential distributions of nozzle wall temperature and erosion rate show an obvious correlation with fuel types. The maximum throat erosion rates for star, single-port wagon wheel, and multi-port wagon wheel grains occur at the circumferential position of 0° (star slot, spoke slot, and midpoint of outer edge of wheel hole), while the minimum throat erosion rates locate at the circumferential position of 36° (star root, spoke root, and midline of adjacent wheel holes). The circumferential non-uniformity of throat erosion rate of multi-port wagon wheel grain is the highest. When the grain port area and oxidizer mass flow rate are the same, the throat erosion rate of multi-port wagon wheel grain is the highest, followed by the star grain, and the throat erosion rate of single-port wagon wheel grain is the lowest. • Effect of complex fuel types on spatial characteristics of nozzle erosion is studied. • Firing test of carbon-based nozzle erosion is performed to verify numerical models. • Three-dimensional simulations on erosion in hybrid rocket motors are conducted. • Simulation results agree well with test data. • Ablation mechanism of star, single-port, and multi-port wagon wheel grain is revealed. Structural mass timber has been used more often in buildings over the last 5 years, given its potential to be a sustainable alternative. However, concerns still exist around the fire safety of mass timber structures, and current mass timber building designers must consider a variety of fire protection strategies, including but not limited to noncombustible protection and design for sacrificial char thickness. This research focuses on better understanding how prescriptive code fire protection strategies affect the sustainability goals that have partially driven mass timber use. This paper studies how decisions during early design can reduce embodied carbon (EC), the initial energy use of a structure's construction. Five structural floor system types were modeled parametrically for various levels of fire protection. System types included timber–concrete composites, cross-laminated timber (CLT)–steel hybrids, and all-timber systems. The resulting EC data analysis reveals that all-timber systems perform the best for EC when the fully protected option is used at shorter spans, when the combined approach option is used at midrange spans, and when the fully exposed timber option is used at longer spans. Across all studied systems, the shallowest possible depth occurred for the 10-ft (3.05-m) spanning CLT–steel hybrid systems at 11.5 in. (292 mm) deep for the fully protected system, and the lowest possible EC was 10.5 lb CO2 eq/ft2 (51.3 kg CO2 eq/m2) for the fully protected 10-ft (3.05 m) all-timber system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, there has been considerable focus on ensuring that energy is used in the most efficient manner possible. This is due to the fact that globally, over 70% of energy is generated from fossil fuels. Consequently, the matter of designing and utilizing materials that will negate energy losses within the construction industry is of paramount importance. Simultaneously, the necessity for a sustainable approach to the design and production of materials is strongly emphasized. This paper presents an innovative approach to the use of a combination of mineral and plant-based fillers in polyurethane foam technology as a thermal insulation material with the potential to be used in construction to reduce energy consumption. Polyurethane composites containing fly ash from biomass combustion and the addition of rice, sunflower, and buckwheat husks as plant fillers were proposed. The structure of the obtained materials was studied, and the most important physical properties were analyzed. These included apparent density, dimensional stability, water absorption, and the effects of UV radiation and water influence on the carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen content. Moreover, the mechanical properties of the materials were investigated, including compressive strength and brittleness. Additionally, the foams were subjected to flammability tests using a cone calorimeter. Furthermore, additional parameters were determined, including the limiting oxygen index and the vertical and horizontal flammability tests. Natural fibre-reinforced polymer composite (NFRPC) has been introduced as one of the solutions to overcome the ecological and environmental problems accompanying the widespread usage of polymeric materials in every facet of life. However, the organic nature of both natural fibres (NFs) and polymers increases their flammability behaviour, and this, in turn, limits their application. In this regard, this work concentrates on studying the effect of adding flame retardants (FR) to jute-reinforced epoxy composites (JRECs), either by treating the jute fabric with diammonium phosphate (DAP) or adding DAP powder to the epoxy resin matrix on the flame retardancy performance as well as the mechanical properties. The results showed that the effect of the incorporation method of DAP either to jute fabric or to resin matrix has a significant difference on the flammability test results at low concentrations; however, at higher concentrations, the flame retardancy performance is not affected by the technique of adding FR to the composite system. On the other hand, the mechanical properties are significantly affected by the method of incorporating FR to JRECs at all concentrations. Moreover, the results obtained from JRECs with FR systems were evaluated and compared with the literature by constructing selection charts that relate the flame retardancy level to mechanical properties. The article discusses the concept of Duration of Heating Phase (DHP) and its relevance in assessing the fire performance of structural members during the cooling phase of a fire. The authors argue that the current fire resistance rating (FRR) system, which is based on a heating phase only, fails to capture the thermomechanical effects that occur during the cooling phase and can lead to structural failure. They propose that the DHP concept, which characterizes the burnout resistance of structural members, should be used as a complementary metric in prescriptive regulations. The authors provide evidence from studies and experiments to support the applicability and validity of the DHP concept. The design of Type B radioactive transport package should be able to withstand the fire accident scenario in transportation accident conditions. For the simulation of the fire scenario, there are mainly three methods: pool fire test, furnace test and thermal radiation test. This paper tried to carry out the fire test with the furnace method that the conditions in the furnace can be more carefully controlled. The paper described the requirements of fire test, test conditions and measurement test methods and analysed the temperature change of fire site and the heat flux data of the surface of the package during the fire test. In order to realize the online diagnosis and prediction of gasoline engine fire faults, this paper proposes an improved misfire fault detection algorithm model based on YOLOv8 for sound signals of gasoline engines. The improvement involves substituting a C2f module in the YOLOv8 backbone network by a BiFormer attention module and another C2f module substituted by a CBAM module that combines channel and spatial attention mechanisms which enhance the neural network's capacity to extract the complex features. The normal and misfire sound signals of a gasoline engine are processed by wavelet transformation and converted to time–frequency images for the training, verification, and testing of convolutional neural network. The experimental results show that the precision of the improved YOLOv8 algorithm model is 99.71% for gasoline engine fire fault tests, which is 2 percentage points higher than for the YOLOv8 network model. AbstractIn order to reach the fire protection standard for new energy vehicle battery packs, the incorporation of SiO2 aerogel particles as a functional filler in the nitrogen and phosphorus fire-retardant system is necessary due to the inadequate mechanical properties. The effects of SiO2 aerogel on the properties of the coatings for the electric car battery pack were investigated by fire protection test, thermogravimetric analysis, limited oxygen index, UL-94 vertical test, combustion test, mechanical properties test, and weathering resistance test. The backside temperature fireproof coatings containing 1.5% SiO2 aerogel was effectively reduced to 250.2 ± 0.1 °C and the residual weight of the coating reached 32.61 ± 0.01%. The composition and structure of the carbon layer were analyzed further. Especially, the weight loss percentage of the fireproof coating is only 5.87 ± 0.02% in the water resistance test. Although cotton is the most common polymer in daily life, its limited use is due to its propensity to catch fire. To solve this issue, we developed an innovative flame‐retardant aluminum phosphate‐supported, chitosan‐linked expandable graphite composite (CAlPEG). The CAlPEG was synthesized by the reaction of natural graphite, aluminum phosphate, and chitosan biopolymer in a one‐pot method. When CAlPEG was coated with cotton fabric and exposed to continuous flame, the fabric did not catch fire up to 760 s, whereas only expandable graphite (EG), aluminum phosphate (AIP), and CS, coated cotton fabric burned within 20 s. Flame‐retardant proficiency of CAlPEG‐coated cloth was confirmed by flame tests such as a limiting oxygen index (LOI) and vertical flammability test. The blank cotton has 17% LOI and is completely burnt out. On the other hand, the as‐prepared composite has a 43% LOI rating, which denotes a high level of flame retardancy. The VFT test result showed the formation of a 3 cm char, which confirms the flame‐retardant material possesses self‐extinguishing qualities. The article develops a new method for utilizing bioresources such as chitosan and offers fresh perspectives on the environmentally friendly synthesis of phosphorylated EG‐linked chitosan on the AlPO4 matrix. Silk fibroin was used to enhance the properties of the fireproof coating, ensuring the safe evacuation of occupants in a fire accident. The effects of biomaterial on the properties of the coatings were investigated by fire protection test, thermogravimetric analysis, limited oxygen index, vertical flame test, water resistance test, and mechanical properties test. The carbon layers were characterized after the fire protection test by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy to analyze the microstructure and chemical composition. The results show that the coating with 6% SF demonstrated the best fire protection, thermal stability, and water resistance. Translation abstract A supermarket made of infra‐lightweight concrete – Proof of stability for a fire wallInfra‐lightweight concrete (ILC) is a special form of lightweight concrete which, due to its low density, possesses improved thermal insulation properties in comparison to normal concrete. ILC facilitates the construction of monolithic, single‐layer building skins without any added thermal insulation or facade cladding. This way, the building components are effectively simplified in comparison to conventionally insulated concrete members and the recyclability is significantly improved. In addition to that, structural elements made of ILC have a reduced CO2 footprint in comparison to conventional composite elements of the building envelope. After 15 years of research and several completed construction projects in the housing and education sector, a commercial retail building has been realized. For this project, an individual approval for a firewall built out of ILC was obtained based on a fire test in combination with a transfer concept based on calculations. This article demonstrates the transfer concept as well as a simplified structural analysis concept for the proof of stability developed for the special application of a firewall. This study investigates the applicability of eco-friendly silicone materials with improved flame retardancy as interior materials for Korean urban railway vehicles, focusing on developing nonslip pads for seats made of non-combustible materials. Fire safety standards vary worldwide, necessitating country-specific testing and analysis. For application to the interior of railway vehicles in Korea, technical standards for the flame-retardant performance of railway vehicles were evaluated, and nonslip pads for seats were tested by comparing two types of flame-retardant silicone. In addition to fire property testing on a specimen basis, experimental verification was performed on a full chair assembly including silicone pads. Passenger comfort testing through pressure measurements was also conducted alongside fire safety performance testing The actual fire test showed that the maximum average heat release rate value was about 20% lower than the standard's upper limit. In the frame of a research project, the structural behaviour in fire of cross-laminated timber rib panels were studied based on numerical investigations. The floor system consists of cross-laminated timber plates rigidly bonded to glued-laminated timber ribs. The numerical investigations comprised uncoupled thermo-mechanical simulations of two types of finite element models, a beam system and a flexible-in-shear multi-layered part, to investigate the influence of the effective width in fire. All models were validated against the experimental results of previously tested full-scale fire resistance tests. A parametric study analysed the composite cross‐sections' effective width in fire for a parameter range expected in practice and gave proposals depending on the thickness of the CLT layers. The mechanical material behavior of mild steels is reversible in the cooling phase of natural fires, which is proven by experimental evidence. For the material behavior of high-strength steels during cooling, no results are yet available. The paper provides the first comprehensive test program on the constitutive material behavior of high-strength steels S690QL and S960QL as well as mild steel S355 J2 + N in the case of natural fires. It is elaborated that the mechanical material behavior of high-strength steels in the cooling phase differs from the behavior in the heating phase and is not reversible due to phase changes of the microstructure. A constitutive material model for structural fire design purposes is developed on the basis of experimental data and the soundness and reliability of the model are proven by a statistical study that systematically evaluates the deviation of the model prediction from the test data. Recent experimental evidence has shown that wood–steel–wood dowel-type connections exhibit a semi-rigid behaviour even after 90 min of fire exposure. Because a semi-rigid behaviour influences the bending moment distribution among structural members, considering the moment–rotation relationships within frame analyses in which structural members are modelled as beam elements can enable a realistic fire response analysis that is significantly simpler than the three-dimensional finite element method. This study proposes an analytical methodology that accounts for the thermo-mechanical behaviour of timber and dowels, enabling the simulation of the non-linear moment–rotation relationships under fire conditions. The proposed analytical model divides dowels into a series of elements on an elastoplastic foundation and performs a direct stiffness method in a time-incremental procedure using an element stiffness matrix derived from beam-on-elastic-foundation theory. This study also presents the results of load-carrying tests on timber frames with dowel-type connections performed under ambient and fire conditions. The analytical results were consistent with the fire test results. Additionally, the analyses were also performed under three conditions in which the dowels were rigid, linear elastic, and elastoplastic bodies. These three results converged to the same value after 65 min of heating, which suggests that the ultimate states of beams with dowel-type connections exposed to fire can be modelled by assuming that dowels are rigid bodies. Concrete-filled hollow section (CFHS) columns with a solid steel core have gained popularity in the construction of tall buildings due to their robust load-bearing capacity, slender design, ease of prefabrication, and exceptional structural fire resistance. In this research paper, we introduce an innovative approach aimed at enhancing the structural performance of these columns. Our method involves replacing the solid steel core with high-strength bar bundles and substituting concrete with grout to achieve superior fire resistance. These modified columns are referred to as "bar-bundle columns." The paper presents the results of extensive fire tests conducted on three bar-bundle columns, each with different bar-bundle sizes, quantities, and configurations. Additionally, we determine the temperature-dependent material properties of the high-strength steel used for reinforcing bars and the thermal properties of the grout used as a filler through standard experimental tests, which are crucial for numerical simulations. An advanced nonlinear finite element model is describe which is capable of predicting the fire behavior of bar-bundle columns. Finally, this numerical model is employed to conduct parametric analyses and propose a simplified design model for bar-bundle columns under fire conditions.Our findings indicate that the bar-bundle configuration and using grout as a filler significantly delays the heating of the steel core, resulting in enhanced fire resistance when compared to CFHS columns with a solid steel core. The simplified method proposed in this study can be used to estimate the fire resistance of slender bar bundles, but further experimental testing could further refine and improve its accuracy. The fire resistance and the thermomechanical behaviour of Steel–Timber Composite (STC) beams are studied through 4 fire tests. 35 non-loaded reduced specimens and 2 mechanically loaded real-scale beams were tested considering standard fire conditions (ISO 834 temperature-time curve). The tested configurations consist of various steel profiles associated with timber elements in such a way that steel is fully or partially protected from fire. Timber is used as a fire-protective material since it has a low thermal conductivity and a predictable charring rate. The fire tests on non-loaded reduced specimens allowed us to investigate a wide variety of configurations and to identify key parameters. It is found that full timber protection is very efficient as steel remains below 250°C during 35 or 70 min when timber protection is respectively 30 or 50 mm thick. Moreover, timber moisture is found to have a beneficial impact on steel temperature, while hollow sections favour timber combustion and steel heating during the cooling phase. The full-scale mechanically loaded fire tests highlight the importance of assembly joints because deflection can open them, which accelerates the heating of steel. Finally, an 81 min fire resistance was measured for an STC beam with a 45 mm thick timber protection. These findings contribute to better understand the behaviour of steel–timber structural elements in fire situations. It appears that a judicious mixing of timber and steel can significantly improve the fire performance of these structural elements. Using bolts as shear connectors of the steel–concrete composite beams enables prefabricated assembly and makes it possible to demountable and reuse the prefabricated components. However, studies on the fire resistance of prefabricated demountable composite beams (PDCBs) connected by bolts are limited. In this paper, four full-scale fire resistance tests were conducted to investigate the fire resistance of PDCBs connected by shear bolts with profiled sheet ribs parallel to the steel beam. Experimental observations, heating curves, deformation curves, and critical temperatures of specimens were obtained through fire-resistant tests. Test results show that the shear failure of bolted connectors occurred in the partially connected PDCBs instead of in the fully connected ones. Under the same load ratio, the fire resistance limit of PDCBs with fire protection was 4.4 times that of PDCBs without fire protection. The temperatures of the upper flanges of the steel beams in the PDCBs were overestimated by the existing codes. Moreover, numerical heat transfer analysis was carried out to investigate the effect of concrete slab thickness, concrete moisture content and steel beam upper flange dimensions on the temperature distribution of the steel beam upper flange. Global fire performance of structures in fire is proven to be more advantageous in many cases of engineering practice than the prescriptive fire resistance based on isolated structural member testing. Hybrid fire simulation (HFS) is a novel well-suited method trending in recent years for analysis of global performance of structures in fire. In the principles of this method, the part of a structure which has unknown behavior or is uncertain to be numerically modeled (subjected to fire) would be physically tested, while the rest of the structure is numerically simulated. HFS method enables capturing the beneficial interaction mechanisms evolving between fire-exposed structural members and the adjacent cooler substructure. Due to the continuous temperature increase in a fire test and the existing thermal inertia as well as the rate- and temperature-dependent material behavior of structures exposed to fire, a real-time performance in hybrid fire simulation counts as a necessity. This challenge is more critical for hybrid fire simulations with higher applied heating rates relevant to structural fire engineering. Within scope of this paper, (a) a robust and rigorous approach for real-time HFS is presented; (b) a series of proof-of-concept studies of different hybrid fire simulations with various applied heating rates are carried out for a thermomechanical benchmark problem; (c) the important results of four representative hybrid fire simulations with relevant heating rates to structural fire engineering are discussed; (d) the importance of an appropriate calculation method for stiffness update of the fire-exposed structural member over HFS procedure is highlighted, and e) the precision and accuracy of the applied HFS approach with respect to interface error and real-time degree are evidenced. The paper describes the outcomes of the analysis of a steel braced frame protected with spray-applied fire resistive material and subjected to fires following earthquake (FFE). Nonlinear time-history analyses were performed in order to evaluate the seismic response. Then, the post-earthquake fire ignitions within selected compartments were considered based on the damage suffered by the structure, which was estimated according to the inter-storey drift ratio and floor acceleration. Natural fire curves were determined by means of zone models. Thus, compartmentation and opening characteristics were included in the analysis. Finally, thermomechanical analyses were completed and failure criteria based on the column and beam displacement and rate of displacement were investigated. The results of the probabilistic analyses were used to produce fragility functions to evaluate the probability of exceeding a limit state conditioned on an intensity measure in the context of FFE. This research study concerns an experimental, budget-friendly, electricity-powered apparatus for bench-scale fire testing. The apparatus consists of various elements, of which the most important are ceramic heating pads, used to impose heat fluxes on exposed surfaces of specimens. The test method allows to control the heating pads' temperature and to adjust the distance between the heating pads and the specimen to obtain well-defined heat fluxes up to 50–60 kW/m2. Higher heat fluxes and temperatures can be obtained by setting the heating pads in full power mode, with or without the use of a thermal shield, which can lead to heat fluxes up to 150 kW/m2. The heating and thermal boundary conditions imposed by the apparatus are characterised and discussed, and the thickness of the convective boundary layer at the heating pads' surface is estimated significantly lower than in the case of gas-fired radiant panels. The performance of the apparatus is analysed for various conditions: controlling the temperature of the heating pads, in an open environment or with the presence of thermal shields, and in full power mode. A few examples of application of the apparatus to fire test typical construction materials (steel and glass) are also presented. These results emphasise the well-defined heating conditions in temperature-controlled mode. A simple design method typically applies a Fire Resistance Rating (FRR) to structural components in isolation based on their performance in the fire test. This approach naturally assumes that the interaction between these components does not degrade their fire performance. To assess the reliability of this assumption, this paper numerically investigated the fire performance of continuous steel columns, incorporating the effects coming from connected steel beams and composite slabs. A 3-step numerical validation, using ABAQUS and following a recommended general simulation process, confirmed the numerical model's accuracy for this research through agreement with experimental tests. The simulation results founded that the well-designed interior column subassemblage, T4-90, failed to reach the designed FRR. This is due to compression coming from the continuous bending beam through the beam bottom flange, significantly weakening the column performance. Rib stiffeners between column flanges are proposed to enhance resistance to contact forces from beam flanges during severe fires. However, the simulation found that the steel columns with rib stiffeners might fail immediately after reaching the FRR. Thus, this research introduced the concept of 'reserve fire resistance' (authentic fire resistance to FRR) to evaluate structural steel elements' resilience to fires exceeding the specified FRR, aligning with the concept of reserve capacity of structural resilience to earthquakes. Based on this concept, new limiting temperature design equations were proposed and validated for steel columns derived from their performance, which yielded an average reserve fire resistance of 1.30 herein. The use of advanced materials, such as ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC), and slender cross-sectional shapes in bridge girders can result in high susceptibility to shear failure during fire exposure. Shear limit state is usually not considered in fire design, which can be a major risk for I-shaped girders with slender webs. This paper presents the development of an approach to evaluate the shear capacity of UHPC bridge girders during fire through extension of room temperature capacity equations to elevated temperatures. Four types of standard AASHTO concrete bridge girders are analyzed under both standard and hydrocarbon fire scenarios. The output results are utilized to evaluate the progression of temperatures and deflections throughout fire exposure, as well as estimate degradation in flexural and shear capacities. Results show that the fire resistance of UHPC bridge girders are significantly affected by fire severity and concrete mass and that these factors should be taken into consideration in fire design of UHPC bridge girders. Tolerance gaps in wood connections are unavoidable, for reasons of constructability and the effects of natural shrinkage in timber elements with changing moisture content. During a fire, these gaps may lead to a substantial heat transfer to the metal connectors that are considered heat protected being embedded by the wooden components of the connection. Aluminium connectors are popular due to their ease of production and assembly, but they are particularly vulnerable to elevated temperatures. This study investigates the effects of tolerance gaps on the fire performance of aluminium connectors in beam-to-column/wall shear connections. Reduced-scale experiments were designed to study the temperature evolution of aluminium connectors during standard fire exposure for 1 mm and 6 mm tolerance gaps, as well the mitigation effects of additional intumescent fire protection in a 6 mm tolerance gap connection. For the 6 mm gap, the temperature of the connector increased much faster, reaching 286 ± 36°C after 80 min, at which time the connector with a 1 mm gap had only reached 97 ± 1°C. The addition of intumescent protection in a 6 mm gap case led to lower temperatures in the connection, in comparison to an equivalent tolerance gap without protection. Subsequently, two additional loaded fire tests were performed, for 6 mm and 22 mm tolerance gaps without fire protection, to investigate the critical failure mode of the connectors. In these cases, the failure occurred in the connectors at 87 min and 32 min, respectively, when their average temperatures reached approximately 315°C. Fire resistance of timber structures is mainly investigated by ISO 834 standard fire resistance tests. In the tests, specimens are heated in accordance with prescribed standard time–temperature curve and the time to failure is measured, but no information is available with regard to the behaviours during post-heating period. In case of timber constructions, post-heating behaviour is important because the self-burning continues during cooling period. To investigate the behaviour during cooling period, fire resistance tests of larch Glue Laminated Timber walls were carried out. The wall thickness was 100 mm. The walls were heated in accordance with ISO 834 for 60 min. After heating, the furnace was supplied with fresh air at various rates. By changing the air supply rate, eight experiments were carried out. Behaviours, such as self-burning, were observed and recorded by video. Heat release rates by self-burning were measured by the oxygen consumption technique. Time-dependent temperature and water content values were measured at internal points of the specimen. As a result, the post-heating self-burning behaviour depended on the rate of air supply. In case of large air supply rate, self-burning was intense right after the end of heating, which increased the deterioration of surface layer. However, the self-burning ceased earlier because the furnace was cooled down rapidly due to the large amount of supplied air. The charred depth was smaller. In case of small air supply rate, self-burning was relatively mild because the oxygen was not enough in furnace gas. However, the decrease of furnace temperature was slow because the air supply rate was small. As a result, charring of specimen was deep if the air supply rate was less than the border of ventilation-control and fuel control. In case of very small air supply rate, self-burning is reduced due to the lack of oxygen. After heating and cooling, the glowing combustion continued at the surface in case of small air supply rate. The present standards for finding the fire ratings of reinforced concrete (RC) columns are restricted to pristine elements, as the age or corrosion-related deteriorations are yet to be addressed. An experimental investigation was conducted to examine the impact of corrosion on the fire performance of reinforced concrete columns. This investigation studied two normal-strength concrete (NSC) and two high-strength concrete (HSC) RC columns. Out of these four columns, one NSC and one HSC column were corroded by a specifically designed accelerated corrosion setup for the target corrosion of 20%, while the remaining columns were the control specimens and were kept uncorroded. After completing the desired exposure time for the accelerated corrosion, both columns and their companion non-corroded columns were tested in a fire furnace simulating the standard ISO-834 fire. The experimental results showed that corrosion has a significant influence on the fire performance of the RC columns. The result indicates that the fire rating of the corroded HSC column drops considerably. Nevertheless, there exists a subtle enhancement in the behavior of the corroded NSC column when exposed to fire, indicating the need for further research in this regard. The effects of corrosion cracks and spalling on the fire resistance of the corroded RC columns were also noted in this study. Slim-floor-type of steel-timber hybrid floor systems which use steel beams contained within the depth of the cross-laminated timber (CLT) floor slab offer many benefits, but there is still very little research available on the fire resistance performance of these systems. In the study presented in this paper two furnace tests and numerical simulations have been conducted to investigate the thermal profiles of the steel member and CLT slabs and to obtain information on the temperature development and charring of the hybrid beam section when it is exposed to standard fire conditions. Also, the effects of intumescent fire protection on temperatures and charring performance were investigated. Numerical 2D thermal simulations for unprotected and protected cases were conducted using SAFIR software, and the agreement between experiments and numerical-analysis predictions were in general very good. The results show that intumescent protection reduces the temperatures of the steel and CLT components as well as charring depth significantly, and the start of charring at CLT slab support may be delayed if intumescent paint protection thicker than that required for the load bearing steel member is used. The result also showed that CLT temperatures exceed 100°C already in the early stages of the fire which decrease the strength and stiffness properties of CLT much before the start of charring. To understand sandwich panel behaviour under fire, expensive full-scale tests, or potentially more efficient fire-structure simulations can be carried out. However, these simulations have only been demonstrated to work for specific applications, either on the global scale (a fire on a simple panel) or on the small scale (a temperature load on a single screw connection), often loaded by a standard fire curve. In this paper, the quality of simulations for combined situations is investigated, i.e. a furnace fire on a set of panels including details and connections. First two existing tests are introduced, a sandwich panel façade test and a studs bolt test, followed by the presentation of their basic fire-structure simulations. In general, the heat transfer analyses agree well with the tests, whereas the structural response analyses need investigation: For the first test, out-of-plane deflections are overestimated at the beginning of the test. A parameter study indicates that this is most likely due to adhesive decomposition, resulting in face delamination and related instabilities. For the second test, the basic simulation does not show any failure, whereas the test failed by vertical bearing. However, with a two-scale model the ultimate load is estimated, and increasing vertical displacements and the onset of vertical bearing are predicted. It is concluded that future tests should include more simulation-relevant measurements. Also, global-scale models need to include features specific to the structure to be simulated, only known after tests and basic simulations, and connections may be decisive for global-scale behaviour, which can be incorporated by a two-scale model. Finally, the tests exhibited complex behaviour across different scales, and modifications and improvements of the simulations increased their fidelity. Therefore fire-structure simulations should always be verified with tests and compared with basic simulations, and modifications in the simulation models should be anticipated. This paper used full-scale experimental tests to study fine water mist system to extinguish fires in the electrical compartment of utility tunnel after cable fires. It used a 250 kW propane burner to ignite the cable. A high-pressure water mist system was implemented for cable fire extinguishing tests. The volume flow rate of fine water spray varied between 7 L/min and 10 L/min. The effect of different water mist volume flow rates on fire extinguishing in the electrical compartment of utility tunnel was investigated. In four cases, the ventilation speed of utility tunnels varied from 0 m/s to 1.2 m/s. The temperature above the ignition source and the lateral temperature distribution at different positions of the ignition source were measured. The effect of different longitudinal ventilation speeds on the fire extinguishing efficiency in the electrical compartment of utility tunnel were studied. The results showed that high-pressure water mist could reduce the internal temperature of the electrical compartment in utility tunnel to below 100 ℃ within 300 seconds. The high-pressure water mist system had good effects in reducing temperature and preventing re-ignition. This experimental study aimed to investigate the structural fire behaviour of damaged glulam beam connections retrofitted using self-tapping screws (STS). Four full-size glulam beam-end bolted connections with wood–steel–wood connection configurations using four or six bolts arranged in two different bolt patterns were examined. All connections were retrofitted using STS after being deliberately damaged through physical testing until failure. In a subsequent stage, the retrofitted connections were experimentally tested under standard fire exposure while subjected to the maximum design load of the weakest, undamaged, unreinforced connection configuration. The influence of the application of STS in terms of preventing wood-splitting propagation and maintaining reasonable fire resistance for the retrofitted connections was experimentally investigated and proven in this study. Results show that the retrofitted glulam beam connections maintained a minimum of approximately 67% of the failure time of identical but undamaged, unreinforced connections under standard fire exposure. The hybrid rocket motor (HRM) emerges as a promising propulsion system offering thrust adjustment at a low cost. Prior research has indicated that the inclusion of micro Al additives enhances HRM performance, yet a comprehensive investigation remains absent. Thus, this study aims to explore the impact of Al particle additive content and size variation on the characteristics of hybrid rocket motors (HRMs) through experiments and simulations. Firing tests are conducted on HRMs employing unadulterated HTPB, 38 % additive Al (2 μm), and 58 % Al (2 μm). Experimental findings reveal enhancements of 12.6 % and 33.9 % in regression rate, and 2.5 % and 8.0 % in specific impulse for the 38 % Al and 58 % Al fuel configurations, respectively, compared to the base case. Subsequently, a numerical two-phase combustion model is built to analyze the inner flow field characteristics. The high consistency between experimental and simulation results validates the efficacy of the numerical approach employed. Following this, a series of simulations covering Al content ranging from 0 % to 58 % and Al particle sizes from 0.4 μm to 75 μm is conducted. Simulation outcomes indicate that specific impulse and combustion efficiency enhancements correlate with the increase in Al mass fraction for particles with diameters under 35 μm. However, high Al content proves detrimental to specific impulse and combustion efficiency when particle diameter exceeds 35 μm. Additionally, regression rate and thrust demonstrate an increase with Al content, albeit the rate of increment diminishes with larger Al particles. This study reveals the essential load-bearing characteristics of the steel–concrete composite floor system under fire conditions applying the structural stressing state theory. Firstly, the strain data in the entire process of the fire test are modeled as state variables which can present the slab's stressing state evolution characteristics. Then, the state variables are used to build the stressing state mode and the parameter characterizing the mode. Further, the Mann–Kendall criterion is adopted to detect the leap points in the evolution curves of the characteristic parameters during the entire fire exposure process. Also, the evolution curves of the stressing state modes are investigated to verify the leap profiles around the leap/characteristic points. Finally, the detected leap points are defined as the failure starting points and elastoplastic branching points, which is unseen in past research focusing on the failure endpoint defined at the ultimate load-bearing state of the composite floor system. The failure starting point and the elastoplastic branching point are the embodiment of natural law from quantitative change to quality change in a system rather than an empirical and statistical judgment. Hence, both characteristic points avoidably exist in the strain data of the composite floor system undergoing the fire process, which can be revealed through the proper modeling methods and update the existing theories and methods on structural analysis and design in fire. Original timber stairwell doors in historic masonry apartment buildings of architectural heritage value can be found in the larger cities of Norway. In Oslo, there are around 4000 such buildings, of which many still hold preserved original stairwell doors. The doors often have glass with decorative patterns in the upper parts, and timber panels on the lower part. Old residential buildings are vulnerable to fire due to the building construction and need fire protection upgrades. The stairwell doors are critical elements to prevent fire spread and to keep evacuation routes safe, so their function and condition are important to the level of fire protection in the building. The research work in this paper aims to find retrofit methods for upgrading the fire resistance of these types of doors so they maintain their integrity and insulating properties for up to 30 minutes, at the same time as they maintain their architectural expression. The upgrades must be as little intrusive and destructive as possible. Intermediate scale tests were carried out in a fire resistance test furnace, using different door configurations. The tests lasted between 30 minutes and 42 minutes, with a thermal exposure from the standard time/temperature curve described in EN 1363–1. The results from the tests showed that 40 mm thick laminated wood could withstand up to 30 minutes of fire exposure, thin timber panels could be upgraded using stone wool and robust gypsum boards type R, and that fire-resistant glass could be mounted on the inside of the original glass in different ways. Visual observations indicate that adding smoke seals inside the door leaf are effective for stopping cold and hot smoke. Extensive vehicle fires threatening suspension bridges in the last decade have aroused an emerging demand to estimate the fire safety of hanger systems. One of the paramount tasks for evaluating the fire resistance of hangers is to calculate their temperatures. However, as plans always lag behind events, no competent temperature calculation methods are available now for engineers, whether vehicle fire models, thermal boundaries on hanger surfaces, or cross-sectional heat transfer formulations. This paper addresses these three issues and then proposes an integrated framework for assessing the thermal response of hanger systems subjected to vehicle fires. Vehicular fires were classified into five grades, adapted to cars, buses, light goods trucks, medium goods trucks, and tanker trucks, respectively. This hierarchy was validated using 16 full-scale vehicle fire tests in opening or tunnel conditions. An empirical formulation of thermal radiation developed for pool fires was adopted to envelope the heat flux applied by passenger vehicle fires on the hanger surface and was validated using five tests. Radiation from truck fires was constructed using a cuboid solid radiative flame. The spatial heat fluxes surrounding Grade-5 vehicle fires typified by tanker fires were computed using the computational fluid dynamics method validated by two large-scale outdoor trench fires. With these quantitative thermal boundaries on hanger exteriors, the transient temperature across the hanger section was derived using the lumped capacitance method, validated by finite-element models in various scenarios. As a multigrade temperature estimation methodology proposed for hangers subjected to vehicle fires, this method is easy to implement. Recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) is increasingly being used in the construction of structural elements. However, the performance of RAC elements under fire is usually considered to be inferior to that of normal concrete (NC) elements. This study investigates the fire behavior of RAC composite steel slabs with and without openings. Ten slabs of size of 1.0 m × 2.2 m were cast either with no opening, one or two circular openings, and one or two square openings. Five of the slabs were manufactured with 100% RAC, while the other five slabs were made with NC. The concrete slabs were loaded and subjected to fire tests at a temperature of about 900°C for 120 min. Test results show that RAC composite slabs have lower stiffness (thus larger mid‐span deflections) under fire exposure compared to their counterpart NC slabs. In terms of the recorded temperature–time curves, RAC slabs showed similar performance to that of NC slabs. The ratio of soffit temperature to the temperature at the top of slab was considerably smaller for RAC slabs compared to NC slabs. RAC slabs also showed more spalling than NC slabs. Experimental test results were numerically verified using PyroSim® software with the two showing good agreement. A series of new design charts for composite RAC slabs with desired fire endurance are proposed. Despite the mechanical and physical properties of polyurethane foams (PUF), their application is still hindered by high inflammability. The elaboration of effective, low-cost, and environmentally friendly fire retardants remains a pressing issue that must be addressed. This work aims to show the feasibility of the successful application of natural nanomaterials, such as halloysite nanotubes and nanocellulose, as promising additives to the commercial halogen-free, fire-retardant triphenyl phosphate (TPP) to enhance the flame retardance of open-cell polyurethane foams. The nanocomposite foams were synthesized by in situ polymerization. Investigation of the mechanical properties of the nanocomposite PUF revealed that the nanoscale additives led to a notable decrease in the foam's compressibility. The obtained results of the flammability tests clearly indicate that there is a prominent synergetic effect between the fire-retardant and the natural nanoscale additives. The nanocomposite foams containing a mixture of TPP (10 and 20 parts per hundred polyol by weight) and either 10 wt.% of nanocellulose or 20 wt.% of halloysite demonstrated the lowest burning rate without dripping and were rated as HB materials according to UL 94 classification. Incidents of waste and biofuel fires are common at all stages of the waste recycling chain and have grave implications for business, employees, firefighters, society, and environment. An early detection of waste and biofuel fires in the smouldering stage could save precious lives, resources, and our environment. Existing fire detection methodologies e.g. handheld temperature sensors, IR cameras, gas sensors, and video and satellite-based monitoring techniques have inherent limitations to efficiently detect smouldering fires. An attempt was made to explore the potential of electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) as an alternate tool to address the problem. In the experiments an externally powered resistive wire was employed to initiate the smouldering fire inside the test material (wood pellets, wood shavings, wood fines). Time series of ERT that followed the initiation and development of smouldering were recorded using an automated monitoring instrument setup. The actual geometry of the experimental sample container and electrode setup was integrated in the 3D finite element method (FEM) model grid to perform inverse numerical modelling (inversion) and to develop resistivity tomographic images. The study shows a sharp increase in ratio of resistivity (R / R o ≥ 50 %) in the test material in the region of smouldering hotspot and demonstrates the potential use of ERT technique for the detection of smouldering hotspots in silos and pile storage of organic material such as wood-based fuels, wood waste, coal, municipal solid waste (MSW), recyclables etc. More research is however required for enabling the use of this technique at the practical scale for different storage conditions. In order to investigate the acoustic oscillation characteristics of gas–liquid pintle rocket engines and elucidate the path by which spray combustion process provides energy to the combustor pressure oscillation, a LOX/GCH4 pintle engine with rectangular combustor was designed. By adding transverse velocity disturbance for the first time, the acoustic response of spray combustion process was simulated, and the effect of excitation amplitude on acoustic response was researched. Numerical results show that the adopted transverse velocity disturbance can excite the first-order transverse acoustic oscillation with same excitation frequency in the engine combustor. The acoustic response maintenance mechanism under extrinsic excitation is summarized for pintle engines. Besides, the temperature distribution inside the engine combustor tends to be uniform, and the low-frequency oscillation caused by the flame transverse swing gradually disappears. The amplitude of combustor pressure oscillation is dominated by excitement amplitude and phase difference between the pressure and heat release in combustion reaction region. In addition, the time-averaged combustor pressure can be amplified mainly by transverse velocity disturbance. Because fire safety cannot be measured directly, building regulation uses test ratings to determine whether materials and products meet societal expectations. Fire resistance constitutes the most enduring means of gauging fire safety, providing ratings for how elements of structure perform in a standard furnace test. Although it has long been known that this test is unrepresentative of real building fires, fire resistance testing remains central to building regulation because it has proved useful. This utility stems not just from the perceived value of the test metric as a proxy for building fire safety, but also from its role as a boundary object that facilitates regulation amongst diverse practitioners. Although fire science has developed greatly since the fire resistance test standard was defined, fire scientists are no longer a relevant social group; closure around the test standard is now widely embedded in regulations and industry practice. Advances in fire science offer the prospect of first principles fire safety engineering that can enable bespoke building solutions that are more optimised than those embedded in the conservative one-size-fits-all regulations based on fire resistance, but adherence to the fire resistance approach means most practitioners lack sufficient knowledge to make safe use of new design methods. Testing orientated to fundamental understanding has been neglected, presenting an obstacle to the innovative solutions required for the built environment in the twenty-first century. The hydrocarbon temperature–time curve is widely used instead of the standard curve to describe the temperature in the environment of structural surfaces exposed to fire in oil and gas chemical facilities and tunnels. This paper presents calculations of the ratio of time to reach critical temperatures at different nominal fire curves for steel structures such as bulkheads and columns with different types of fireproofing. The thermophysical properties of the fireproofing materials were obtained by solving the inverse heat conduction problem using computer simulation. It was found that the time interval for reaching critical temperatures in structures with different types of fireproofing in a hydrocarbon fire decreased, on average, by a factor of 1.2–1.7 compared to the results of standard fire tests. For example, for decks and bulkheads with mineral wool fireproofing, the K-factor of the ratio of the time for reaching the critical temperature of steel under the standard curve to the hydrocarbon curve was 1.30–1.62; for plaster, it was 1.56; for cement boards, it was 1.34; for non-combustible coatings, it was 1.38–2.0; and, for epoxy paints, it was 1.71. The recommended values of the K-factor for fire resistance up to 180 min (incl.) were 1.7 and, after 180 min, 1.2. The obtained dependencies would allow fireproofing manufacturers to predict the insulation thickness for expensive hydrocarbon fire experiments if the results of fire tests under standard (cellulosic) conditions are known. The Metro Tunnel is a Victorian Government funded infrastructure project which will create a new end‐to‐end rail line from Sunbury in the west to Cranbourne/Pakenham in the south east, with bigger and better trains, next generation signaling technology and five new underground stations. This article provides a detailed summary of the structural fire testing requirements for the platform tunnel side wall and arch lining in the Metro Tunnel's State Library and Town Hall stations. Contrasted to building fires, tunnel fires are more significant within a few minutes due to the confined space which can cause concrete spalling and jeopardize the bearing capacity of the tunnel, which is a significant concern to designers. The catastrophic European tunnel fire events in 1999 and 2001 led to the development of innovative regulations and recommendations, including guidelines endorsed by the European Federation of National (EFNARC 132F r3:2006) and Efectis R0695:2020. This paper explains the methodology taken to design the fire rated concrete test for the platform tunnel side wall and arch lining in the State Library and Town Hall stations of Melbourne's Metro Tunnel Project for structural stability for the period of a serious fire event. For the first time, uniaxial loading (500T) was applied to five large‐scale flat concrete panels (1800 × 1800 × 400 mm) which are normally unloaded during fire exposure and exposed to the RABT ZTV (rail) fire curve. The first testing program investigated the influence of polypropylene dosage in the concrete mix design and its effect on the magnitude and severity of concrete spalling. The results indicated that the recommended 2.0 kg/m3 polypropylene dosage requirement as specified by Eurocode is conservative. Concrete mix designs with a stable aggregate and the correct curing regime can mitigate spalling at significantly lower polypropylene dosage rates. The water pooling effect was evident during the fire testing and the surface cracking that developed was vertical to the surface, allowing for the release of the pore water pressure build‐up. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a highly flammable material, and enhancing its flame retardancy to pass the glow wire test is a great challenge. In this work, the melamine salt of tannic phosphate (MTP) was synthesized, characterized, and combined with PVA at 8, 10, 13, and 15 wt%. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) results indicated that MTP enhanced the char formation of PVA at 750°C. Flammability tests showed that low concentrations of MTP can enhance the flame retardancy of PVA. The limiting oxygen index (LOI) of PVA increased from 18.8% to 39.9% in the PVA/15%MTP composite. The vertical flame spread test (UL94V) showed that PVA/13%MTP, and PVA/15%MTP composites achieved V0 rating. Glow wire test data indicated that PVA/10%MTP, PVA/13%MTP, and PVA/15%MTP composites had a glow wire flammability index (GWFI) of 960°C/2 mm. Moreover, all the composites passed the needle flame test when the flame application time was 120 s. PVA/15%MTP composite showed very good UV protection and an increase in sound absorption coefficient magnitude compared with pure PVA. Timber–concrete composite (TCC) structure system is most frequently used in large-span structures. Recently, a performance-based fire safety design method named improved travelling fires methodology (iTFM), which is suitable for long-span structures, has been developed. In this article, an energy-based time equivalent method (EBTEM) is proposed, while its effectiveness is experimentally verified. The proposed method can be used to evaluate the fire resistance of the TCC structures subjected to iTFM fires. The results indicated that the damage degree at different spatial positions of the TCC structure under the same fire size was different, and the location with the least and most serious damages occurs towards the beginning and middle of the fire path, respectively. The results show that this difference in damage degree mainly depends on the fire size, and the difference becomes less pronounced as the fire size increases. Concomitantly, it can be obtained that the damage degree under the different fire sizes was different, and the smaller the fire size, the greater the damage degree. Hence, when the EBTEM is adopted to design the TCC structures exposed to iTFM fires, the setting of fire protection target is largely determined by the actual fire size. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
