Abstract

International audience; Hermite subdivision schemes act on vector valued data that is not only considered as functions values of a vector valued function from R to R r , but as evaluations of a function and its consecutive derivatives. Starting with data on r (Z), r = d + 1, interpreted as function value and d = r − 1 consecutive derivatives, we compute successive iterations to define values on r (2 −n Z) and an r-vector valued limit function for whose first component C d-smoothness is generally expected. In this paper, we construct Hermite subdivision schemes such that, beginning with the same data, it is possible to reach a limit function with smoothness d +p for any p > 0. The result is obtained with a generalized Taylor factorization and a smoothness condition for vector subdivision schemes.

Abstract

International audience; This chapter first highlights the significant energy consumption of existing wired communication networks. It considers various means of operating such networks more efficiently. Then, the chapter examines the components that make up a wired communications network and their differing characteristics between the access and core, as well as patterns of traffic behavior. The chapter focuses on static (network planning) and dynamic (traffic-engineering) schemes that can be used to reduce the energy consumption of networks. It also pays attention to a number of challenges/open research questions that need to be resolved before the implementation of such schemes. These include issues with migration and resilience. The chapter then deals with economic-, regulatory-, and business-related methods. Finally, it focuses on the architecture of communication networks and the corresponding relationship with energy usage.

Abstract

International audience; Neural crest (NC) cells are a multipotent, highly migratory cell population that generates most of the components of the peripheral nervous system (PNS), including the glial Schwann cells (SC) and boundary cap (BC) cells. These latter cells are located at the interface between the central nervous system and PNS, at the exit/entry points of ventral motor/dorsal sensory axons and give rise to all SC in the nerve roots and to a subset of nociceptive neurons and satellite cells in the dorsal root ganglia. In the present study we have compared BC cells with two closely related cell types, NC and Schwann cell precursors (SCpr), by RNA profiling. This led to the definition of a set of 10 genes that show specific expression in BC cells and/or in their derivatives along the nerve roots. Analysis of the expression of these genes during mouse development revealed novel features, of those most important are: (i) dorsal and ventral nerve root BC cell derivatives express different sets of genes, suggesting that they have distinct properties; (ii) these cells undergo major modifications in their gene expression pattern between embryonic days 14.5 and 17.5, possibly linked to the SCpr-immature Schwann cell transition; (iii) nerve roots SC differ from more distal SC not only in their origins and locations, but also in their gene expression patterns. In conclusion, the identification of these novel makers opens the way for a detailed characterization of BC cells in both mouse and man.

Abstract

The quality of compiler-optimized code for high-performance applications is far behind what optimization and domain experts can achieve by hand. Although it may seem surprising at first glance, the performance gap has been widening over time, due to the tremendous complexity increase in microprocessor and memory architectures, and to the rising level of abstraction of popular programming languages and styles. This paper explores in-between solutions, neither fully automatic nor fully manual ways to adapt a computationally intensive application to the target architecture. By mimicking complex sequences of transformations useful to optimize real codes, we show that generative programming is a practical means to implement architecture-aware optimizations for high-performance applications.This work explores the promises of generative programming languages and techniques for the high-performance computing expert. We show that complex, architecture-specific optimizations can be implemented in a type-safe, purely generative framework. Peak performance is achievable through the careful combination of a high-level, multi-stage evaluation language–MetaOCaml–with low-level code generation techniques. Nevertheless, our results also show that generative approaches for high-performance computing do not come without technical caveats and implementation barriers concerning productivity and reuse. We describe these difficulties and identify ways to hide or overcome them, from abstract syntaxes to heterogeneous generators of code generators, combining high-level and type-safe multi-stage programming with a back-end generator of imperative code.

Abstract

International audience; The quality of compiler-optimized code for high-performance applications lags way behind what optimization and domain expertscan achieve by hand. This paper explores in-between solutions,besides fully automatic and fully-manual code optimization. Thiswork discusses how generative approaches can help the design andoptimization of supercomputing applications. It outlines early results and research directions, using MetaOCaml for the design ofa generative tool-box to design portable optimized code. We alsoidentify some limitations of the MetaOCaml system. We finallyadvocate for an offshoring approach to bring high-level and safemetaprogramming to imperative languages.

For a probability measure $P$ on $\R^d$ and $n\!\! \in \! \N$ consider $e_n = \inf \displaystyle \int \min_{a \in \alpha} V(\| x-a \| )dP(x)$ where the infimum is taken over all subsets $\alpha$ of $\R^d$ with $\mbox{card} (\alpha) \leq n$ and $V$ is a nondecreasing function. Under certain conditions on $V$, we derive the precise $n$-asymptotics of $e_n$ for nonsingular and for (singular) self-similar distributions $P$ and we find the asymptotic performance of optimal quantizers using weighted empirical measures.

International audience; Most imperative languages only offer arrays as "first-class" datastructures. Other data structures, especially recursive datastructures such as trees, have to be manipulated through explicitlymanagement of memory. On the other hand, recursion in the flow ofcontrol also is an open problem in automatic parallelization. To helpand solve this problem, this paper proposes a data flow analysis forboth data and control recursive structures.
