Sleep staging plays an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of clinical sleep disorders. The sleep staging standard defines every 30 seconds as a sleep period, which may mean that there exist similar brain activity patterns during the same sleep period. Thus, in this work, we propose a novel time-related synchronization analysis framework named time-related multimodal sleep scoring model (TRMSC) to explore the potential time-related patterns of sleeping. In the proposed TRMSC, the time-related synchronization analysis is first conducted on the single channel electrophysiological signal, i.e., Electroencephalogram (EEG) and Electrooculogram (EOG), to explore the time-related patterns, and the spectral activation features are also extracted by spectrum analysis to obtain the multimodal features. With the extracted multimodal features, the feature fusion and selection strategy is utilized to obtain the optimal feature set and achieve robust sleep staging. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed TRMSC, sleep staging experiments were conducted on the Sleep-EDF dataset, and the experimental results indicate that the proposed TRMSC has achieved better performance than other existing strategies, which proves that the time-related synchronization features can make up for the shortcomings of traditional spectrum-based strategies and achieve a higher classification accuracy. The proposed TRMSC model may be helpful for portable sleep analyzers and provide a new analytical method for clinical sleeping research.

This study introduces the Divergent Selective Focused Multi-heads Self-Attention Network (DSFMANet), an innovative deep learning model devised to automatically predict Hamilton Depression Rating Scale-17 (HAMD-17) scores in patients with depression. This model introduces a multi-branch structure for sub-bands and artificially configures attention focus factors on various branches, resulting in distinct attention distributions for different sub-bands. Experimental results demonstrate that when DSFMANet processes sub-band data, its performance surpasses current benchmarks in key metrics such as mean square error (MSE), mean absolute error (MAE), root mean square error (RMSE), and coefficient of determination (R2). This success is particularly evident in terms of MSE and MAE, where the performance of sub-band data is significantly superior, highlighting the model's potential in accurately predicting HAMD-17 scores. Concurrently, the experiment also compared the model's performance with sub-band and full-band data, affirming the superiority of the selective focus attention mechanism in electroencephalography (EEG) signal processing. DSFMANet, when utilizing sub-band data, exhibits higher data processing efficiency and reduced model complexity. The findings of this study underscore the significance of employing deep learning models based on sub-band analysis in depression diagnosis. The DSFMANet model not only effectively enhances the accuracy of depression diagnosis but also offers valuable research directions for similar applications in the future. This deep learning-based automated approach can effectively ascertain the HAMD-17 scores of patients with depression, thus offering more accurate and reliable support for clinical decision-making.

Objectives. Until now, limited knowledge remains regarding the association among childhood obesity, cognitive behavior, and brain networks. Utilizing a publicly available dataset, we aimed to investigate the relationships between childhood obesity and functional networks during the stop-signal task. Results. Given the huge conflict-monitoring and inhibitory control demands of the task, both enhanced network connectivity and properties were observed under the “No-go” compared to the “Go” condition for both obese and non-obese preadolescents. Obese preadolescents exhibited significantly increased frontal-parietal, frontal-occipital, and frontal-temporal linkages, as well as heightened network efficiency under both “Go” and “No-go” conditions compared to non-obese counterparts. Additionally, significant correlations were found between network connectivity and properties and preadolescents’ body mass index (BMI), with their combination predicting BMI scores successfully. Conclusions. These findings support that childhood obesity is not simply a deviant habit with restricted physical health consequences, but rather associated with the atypical development of frontal-based networks involved in inhibitory control and cognitive performance.

Motor imagery (MI) is a high-level cognitive process that has been widely applied to clinical rehabilitation and brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). However, the decoding of MI tasks still faces challenges, and the neural mechanisms underlying its application are unclear, which seriously hinders the development of MI-based clinical applications and BCIs. Here, we combined EEG source reconstruction and Bayesian nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) methods to construct large-scale cortical networks of left-hand and right-hand MI tasks. Compared to right-hand MI, the results showed that the significantly increased functional network connectivities (FNCs) mainly located among the visual network (VN), sensorimotor network (SMN), right temporal network, right central executive network, and right parietal network in the left-hand MI at the $\beta $ (13-30Hz) and all (8-30Hz) frequency bands. For the network properties analysis, we found that the clustering coefficient, global efficiency, and local efficiency were significantly increased and characteristic path length was significantly decreased in left-hand MI compared to right-hand MI at the $\beta $ and all frequency bands. These network pattern differences indicated that the left-hand MI may need more modulation of multiple large-scale networks (i.e., VN and SMN) mainly located in the right hemisphere. Finally, based on the spatial pattern network of FNC and network properties, we propose a classification model. The proposed model achieves a top classification accuracy of 78.2% in cross-subject two-class MI-BCI tasks. Overall, our findings provide new insights into the neural mechanisms of MI and a potential network biomarker to identify MI-BCI tasks.

Objective: The diversity of electrode placement systems brought the problem of channel location harmonization in large-scale electroencephalography (EEG) applications to the forefront. Therefore, our goal was to resolve this problem by introducing and assessing the reference electrode standardization technique (REST) to transform EEGs into a common electrode distribution with computational zero reference at infinity offline. Methods: Simulation and eye-closed resting-state EEG datasets were used to investigate the performance of REST for EEG signals and power configurations. Results: REST produced small errors (the root mean square error (RMSE): 0.2936–0.4583; absolute errors: 0.2343–0.3657) and high correlations (>0.9) between the estimated signals and true ones. The comparison of configuration similarities in power among various electrode distributions revealed that REST induced infinity reference could maintain a perfect performance similar (>0.9) to that of true one. Conclusion: These results demonstrated that REST transformation could be adopted to resolve the channel location harmonization problem in large-scale EEG applications.

Continuous electroencephalogram (cEEG) plays a crucial role in monitoring and postoperative evaluation of critical patients with extensive EEG abnormalities. Recently, the temporal variability of dynamic resting-state functional connectivity has emerged as a novel approach to understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying diseases. However, little is known about the underlying temporal variability of functional connections in critical patients admitted to neurology intensive care unit (NICU). Furthermore, considering the emerging field of network physiology that emphasizes the integrated nature of human organisms, we hypothesize that this temporal variability in brain activity may be potentially linked to other physiological functions. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate network variability using fuzzy entropy in 24-hour dynamic resting-state networks of critical patients in NICU, with an emphasis on exploring spatial topology changes over time. Our findings revealed both atypical flexible and robust architectures in critical patients. Specifically, the former exhibited denser functional connectivity across the left frontal and left parietal lobes, while the latter showed predominantly short-range connections within anterior regions. These patterns of network variability deviating from normality may underlie the altered network integrity leading to loss of consciousness and cognitive impairment observed in these patients. Additionally, we explored changes in 24-hour network properties and found simultaneous decreases in brain efficiency, heart rate, and blood pressure between approximately 1 pm and 5 pm. Moreover, we observed a close relationship between temporal variability of resting-state network properties and other physiological indicators including heart rate as well as liver and kidney function. These findings suggest that the application of a temporal variability-based cEEG analysis method offers valuable insights into underlying pathophysiological mechanisms of critical patients in NICU, and may present novel avenues for their condition monitoring, intervention, and treatment.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder and early diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment. Stable and effective biomarkers are essential for understanding the underlying causes of the disorder and improving diagnostic accuracy. Electroencephalography (EEG) signals have proven to be reliable biomarkers for diagnosing ASD. Extracting stable connectivity patterns from EEG signals helps ensure robustness in ASD diagnostic systems. In this study, we propose a hybrid graph convolutional network framework called Rest-HGCN, which utilizes resting-state EEG signals to capture differential patterns of brain connectivity between normal children and ASD patients using graph learning strategies. The Rest-HGCN combines brain network analysis techniques and data-driven strategies to extract discriminative graph features from resting-state EEG signals. By automatically extracting differential graph patterns from these signals, the Rest-HGCN achieves reliable ASD diagnosis. To evaluate the performance of Rest-HGCN, we conducted ASD diagnosis experiments using k-fold cross-validation on the public ABC-CT resting EEG dataset. The proposed Rest-HGCN model achieved accuracies of 87.12 % and 85.32 % in single-subject and cross-experiment analyses, respectively. The results suggest that Rest-HGCN can effectively capture discriminant graph patterns from resting EEG signals and achieve robust ASD diagnosis. This may provide an effective and convenient tool for clinical ASD diagnosis.

Abstract Gallium-based liquid metal has gained significant attention in conformal flexible electronics due to its high electrical conductivity, intrinsic deformability, and biocompatibility. However, the fabrication of large-area and highly uniform conformal liquid metal films remains challenging. Interfacial self-assembly has emerged as a promising method, but traditional approaches face difficulties in assembling liquid metal particles. Here, we realized the multi-size universal self-assembly (MUS) for liquid metal particles with various diameters (100 cm2) and high floating yield (50–90%). Moreover, the films can be conformally transferred onto complex surfaces such as human skin, allowing for the fabrication of substrate-free flexible devices. This eliminates interference from traditional substrate mechanical responses, making the liquid metal e-tattoo more user-friendly.

Acoustic stimulation is one of the most influential techniques for distressing tinnitus, while how it functions to reverse neural changes associated with tinnitus remains undisclosed. In this study, our objective is to investigate alterations in brain networks to shed light on the enigma of acoustic intervention for tinnitus. We designed a 75-day long-term acoustic intervention experiment, during which chronic tinnitus patients received daily modulated acoustic stimulation with each session lasting 15 days. Every 15 days, professional tinnitus assessments were conducted, collecting both electroencephalogram (EEG) and tinnitus handicap inventory (THI) data from the patients. Thereafter, we investigated the changes in EEG network organizations during continuous acoustic stimulation and their progressive evolution throughout long-term therapy, alongside exploring the associations between the evolving changes of the network alterations and THI. Our current study findings reveal reorganization in alpha/beta long-range frontal-parietal-occipital connections as well as local frontal and parietal-occipital regions induced by acoustic stimulation. Furthermore, we observed a decrease in modulation effects as therapy sessions progressed. These alterations in brain networks reflect the reversal of tinnitus-related neural activities, particularly distress and perception; thus contributing to tinnitus rehabilitation through long-term modulation effects. This study provides unique insights into how long-term acoustic intervention affects the network organizations of tinnitus patients and deepens our understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying tinnitus rehabilitation.

There are plenty of people suffer from limb dysfunction caused by stroke and other factors, and it is of great social significance for the rehabilitation of patients to reconstruct brain movement function and recover voluntary motor control. In the study of EEG and its network, movement has a high activation level on the central nervous system. In the study of EMG and its network, movement has a strong synergistic effect on the peripheral nervous system. Through the study of information coupling, the control feedback mechanism between these two nervous systems can be revealed. Finally, combined with the human-computer interaction rehabilitation theory and closed-loop regulation techniques, this research will help to realize the systematic and comprehensive rehabilitation for stroke hemiplegia patients.

Given a multitude of genetic and environmental factors, when investigating the variability in schizophrenia (SCZ) and the first-degree relatives (R-SCZ), latent disease-specific variation is usually hidden. To reliably investigate the mechanism underlying the brain deficits from the aspect of functional networks, we newly iterated a framework of contrastive variational autoencoders (cVAEs) applied in the contrasts among three groups, to disentangle the latent resting-state network patterns specified for the SCZ and R-SCZ. We demonstrated that the comparison in reconstructed resting-state networks among SCZ, R-SCZ, and healthy controls (HC) revealed network distortions of the inner-frontal hypoconnectivity and frontal-occipital hyperconnectivity, while the original ones illustrated no differences. And only the classification by adopting the reconstructed network metrics achieved satisfying performances, as the highest accuracy of 96.80% ± 2.87%, along with the precision of 95.05% ± 4.28%, recall of 98.18% ± 3.83%, and F1-score of 96.51% ± 2.83%, was obtained. These findings consistently verified the validity of the newly proposed framework for the contrasts among the three groups and provided related resting-state network evidence for illustrating the pathological mechanism underlying the brain deficits in SCZ, as well as facilitating the diagnosis of SCZ.

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is frequently misdiagnosed as Alzheimer’s disease (AD) due to similar clinical symptoms. In this study, we constructed frequency-based multilayer resting-state electroencephalogram (EEG) networks and extracted representative network features to improve the differentiation between AD and FTD. When compared with healthy controls (HC), AD showed primarily stronger delta-alpha cross-couplings and weaker theta-sigma cross-couplings. Notably, when comparing the AD and FTD groups, we found that the AD exhibited stronger delta-alpha and delta-beta connectivity than the FTD. Thereafter, by extracting the representative network features and then applying these features in the classification between AD and FTD, an accuracy of 81.1% was achieved. Finally, a multivariable linear regressive model was built, based on the differential topologies, and then adopted to predict the scores of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scale. Accordingly, the predicted and actual measured scores were indeed significantly correlated with each other ( ${r}$ = 0.274, ${p}$ = 0.036). These findings consistently suggest that frequency-based multilayer resting-state networks can be utilized for classifying AD and FTD and have potential applications for clinical diagnosis.

Accurately decoding motor imagery (MI) brain-computer interface (BCI) tasks has remained a challenge for both neuroscience research and clinical diagnosis. Unfortunately, less subject information and low signal-to-noise ratio of MI electroencephalography (EEG) signals make it difficult to decode the movement intentions of users. In this study, we proposed an end-to-end deep learning model, a multi-branch spectral-temporal convolutional neural network with channel attention and LightGBM model (MBSTCNN-ECA-LightGBM), to decode MI-EEG tasks. We first constructed a multi branch CNN module to learn spectral-temporal domain features. Subsequently, we added an efficient channel attention mechanism module to obtain more discriminative features. Finally, LightGBM was applied to decode the MI multi-classification tasks. The within-subject cross-session training strategy was used to validate classification results. The experimental results showed that the model achieved an average accuracy of 86% on the two-class MI-BCI data and an average accuracy of 74% on the four-class MI-BCI data, which outperformed current state-of-the-art methods. The proposed MBSTCNN-ECA-LightGBM can efficiently decode the spectral and temporal domain information of EEG, improving the performance of MI-based BCIs.

ObjectiveAnti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor encephalitis (anti-NMDARE) is autoimmune encephalitis with a characteristic neuropsychiatric syndrome and persistent cognition deficits even after clinical remission. The objective of this study was to uncover the potential noninvasive and quantified biomarkers related to residual brain distortions in convalescent anti-NMDARE patients.MethodsBased on resting-state electroencephalograms (EEG), both power spectral density (PSD) and brain network analysis were performed to disclose the persistent distortions of brain rhythms in these patients. Potential biomarkers were then established to distinguish convalescent patients from healthy controls.ResultsOppositely configured spatial patterns in PSD and network architecture within specific rhythms were identified, as the hyperactivated PSD spanning the middle and posterior regions obstructs the inter-regional information interactions in patients and thereby leads to attenuated frontoparietal and frontotemporal connectivity. Additionally, the EEG indexes within delta and theta rhythms were further clarified to be objective biomarkers that facilitated the noninvasive recognition of convalescent anti-NMDARE patients from healthy populations.ConclusionCurrent findings contributed to understanding the persistent and residual pathological states in convalescent anti-NMDARE patients, as well as informing clinical decisions of prognosis evaluation.

The brain functions as an accurate circuit that regulates information to be sequentially propagated and processed in a hierarchical manner. However, it is still unknown how the brain is hierarchically organized and how information is dynamically propagated during high-level cognition. In this study, we developed a new scheme for quantifying the information transmission velocity (ITV) by combining electroencephalogram (EEG) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and then mapped the cortical ITV network (ITVN) to explore the information transmission mechanism of the human brain. The application in MRI-EEG data of P300 revealed bottom-up and top-down ITVN interactions subserving P300 generation, which was comprised of four hierarchical modules. Among these four modules, information exchange between visual- and attention-activated regions occurred at a high velocity, related cognitive processes could thus be efficiently accomplished due to the heavy myelination of these regions. Moreover, inter-individual variability in P300 was probed to be attributed to the difference in information transmission efficiency of the brain, which may provide new insight into the cognitive degenerations in clinical neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease, from the transmission velocity perspective. Together, these findings confirm the capacity of ITV to effectively determine the efficiency of information propagation in the brain.

Investigating electromyography (EMG) signals is vital to promote the development of both rehabilitative robots and understanding of the movement neural mechanism. Interactions between various muscle units are paramount to be measured through network analysis, aiming to reveal how information is propagated and integrated. Herein, an EMG network using an epidermal array electrode sleeve to record multichannel EMGs is constructed. Then, a master–slave rehabilitation robot by adopting the EMG network as a feature for movement intention recognition is built. The results demonstrate that the sleeve can record signals with high quality, characterized by better signal robustness and higher movement recognition performance. The different finger movements evoke the specific spatial network patterns, characterized by the dominated hub at the muscle in charge of the corresponding movement, and the proposed EMG network‐based approach consistently achieves the highest recognition accuracy. Moreover, the proposed approach also shows the relatively less influence of signal length and electrode positions on the movement recognition. Finally, the proposed robot system can achieve 98.21% ± 2.37 accuracy for online control. These results provide a novel theoretical and practical basis for neural prosthesis control and hemiplegic hand rehabilitation.

Human cognition is usually underpinned by intrinsic structure and functional neural co-activation in spatially distributed brain regions. Owing to lacking an effective approach to quantifying the covarying of structure and functional responses, how the structural–functional circuits interact and how genes encode the relationships, to deepen our knowledge of human cognition and disease, are still unclear. Here, we propose a multimodal covariance network (MCN) construction approach to capture interregional covarying of the structural skeleton and transient functional activities for a single individual. We further explored the potential association between brain-wide gene expression patterns and structural–functional covarying in individuals involved in a gambling task and individuals with major depression disorder (MDD), adopting multimodal data from a publicly available human brain transcriptomic atlas and 2 independent cohorts. MCN analysis showed a replicable cortical structural–functional fine map in healthy individuals, and the expression of cognition- and disease phenotype-related genes was found to be spatially correlated with the corresponding MCN differences. Further analysis of cell type-specific signature genes suggests that the excitatory and inhibitory neuron transcriptomic changes could account for most of the observed correlation with task-evoked MCN differences. In contrast, changes in MCN of MDD patients were enriched for biological processes related to synapse function and neuroinflammation in astrocytes, microglia, and neurons, suggesting its promising application in developing targeted therapies for MDD patients. Collectively, these findings confirmed the correlations of MCN-related differences with brain-wide gene expression patterns, which captured genetically validated structural–functional differences at the cellular level in specific cognitive processes and psychiatric patients.

Background: As a novel approach for people to directly communicate with an external device, the study of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) has become well-rounded. However, similar to the real-world scenario, where individuals are expected to work in groups, the BCI systems should be able to replicate group attributes. Methods: We proposed a 4-order cumulants feature extraction method (CUM4-CSP) based on the common spatial patterns (CSP) algorithm. Simulation experiments conducted using motion visual evoked potentials (mVEP) EEG data verified the robustness of the proposed algorithm. In addition, to freely choose paradigms, we adopted the mVEP and steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) paradigms and designed a multimodal collaborative BCI system based on the proposed CUM4-CSP algorithm. The feasibility of the proposed multimodal collaborative system framework was demonstrated using a multiplayer game controlling system that simultaneously facilitates the coordination and competitive control of two users on external devices. To verify the robustness of the proposed scheme, we recruited 30 subjects to conduct online game control experiments, and the results were statistically analyzed. Results: The simulation results prove that the proposed CUM4-CSP algorithm has good noise immunity. The online experimental results indicate that the subjects could reliably perform the game confrontation operation with the selected BCI paradigm. Conclusions: The proposed CUM4-CSP algorithm can effectively extract features from EEG data in a noisy environment. Additionally, the proposed scheme may provide a new solution for EEG-based group BCI research.

Time-varying directed electroencephalography (EEG) network is the potential tool for studying the dynamical causality among brain areas at a millisecond level; which conduces to understanding how our brain effectively adapts to information processing, giving inspiration to causality- and brain-inspired machine learning. Currently, its construction still mainly relies on the parametric approach such as multivariate adaptive autoregressive (MVAAR), represented by the most widely used adaptive directed transfer function (ADTF). Restricted by the model assumption, the corresponding performance largely depends on the MVAAR modeling which usually encounters difficulty in fitting complex spectral features. In this study, we proposed to construct EEG directed network with multivariate nonparametric dynamical Granger causality (mndGC) method that infers the causality of a network, instead, in a data-driven way directly and therefore avoids the trap in the model-dependent parametric approach. Comparisons between mndGC and ADTF were conducted both with simulation and real data application. Simulation study demonstrated the superiority of mndGC both in noise resistance and capturing the instantaneous directed network changes. When applying to the real motor imagery (MI) data set, distinguishable network characters between left- and right-hand MI during different MI stages were better revealed by mndGC. Our study extends the nonparametric causality exploration and provides practical suggestions for the time-varying directed EEG network analysis.

Medication therapy seems to be an effective treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD). However, although the efficacies of various medicines are equal or similar on average, they vary widely among individuals. Therefore, an understanding of methods for the timely evaluation of short-term therapeutic response and prediction of symptom improvement after a specific course of medication at the individual level at the initial stage of treatment is very important. In our present study, we sought to identify a neurobiological signature of the response to short-term antidepressant treatment. Related brain network analysis was applied in resting-state electroencephalogram (EEG) datasets from patients with MDD. The corresponding EEG networks were constructed accordingly and then quantitatively measured to predict the efficacy after eight weeks of medication, as well as to distinguish the therapeutic responders from non-responders. The results of our present study revealed that the corresponding resting-state EEG networks became significantly weaker after one week of treatment, and the eventual medication efficacy was reliably predicted using the changes in those network properties within the one-week medication regimen. Moreover, the corresponding resting-state networks at baseline were also proven to precisely distinguish those responders from other individuals with an accuracy of 96.67% when using the spatial network topologies as the discriminative features. These findings consistently provide a deeper neurobiological understanding of antidepressant treatment and a reliable and quantitative approach for personalized treatment of MDD.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is associated with the impaired integrating and segregating of related information that is expanded within the large-scale brain network. The varying ASD symptom severities have been explored, relying on their behaviors and related brain activity, but how to effectively predict ASD symptom severity needs further exploration. In this study, we aim to investigate whether the ASD symptom severity could be predicted with electroencephalography (EEG) metrics. Based on a publicly available dataset, the EEG brain networks were constructed, and four types of EEG metrics were calculated. Then, we statistically compared the brain network differences among ASD children with varying severities, i.e., high/low autism diagnostic observation schedule (ADOS) scores, as well as with the typically developing (TD) children. Thereafter, the EEG metrics were utilized to validate whether they could facilitate the prediction of the ASD symptom severity. The results demonstrated that both high- and low-scoring ASD children showed the decreased long-range frontal-occipital connectivity, increased anterior frontal connectivity and altered network properties. Furthermore, we found that the four types of EEG metrics are significantly correlated with the ADOS scores, and their combination can serve as the features to effectively predict the ASD symptom severity. The current findings will expand our knowledge of network dysfunction in ASD children and provide new EEG metrics for predicting the symptom severity.

Abstract The development of stretchable electronics could enhance novel interface structures to solve the stretchability–conductivity dilemma, which remains a major challenge. Herein, we report a nano‐liquid metal (LM)‐based highly robust stretchable electrode (NHSE) with a self‐adaptable interface that mimics water‐to‐net interaction. Based on the in situ assembly of electrospun elastic nanofiber scaffolds and electrosprayed LM nanoparticles, the NHSE exhibits an extremely low sheet resistance of 52 mΩ sq−1. It is not only insensitive to a large degree of mechanical stretching (i.e., 350% electrical resistance change upon 570% elongation) but also immune to cyclic deformation (i.e., 5% electrical resistance increases after 330 000 stretching cycles with 100% elongation). These key properties are far superior to those of the state‐of‐the‐art reports. Its robustness and stability are verified under diverse circumstances, including long‐term exposure to air (420 days), cyclic submersion (30 000 times), and resilience against mechanical damages. The combination of conductivity, stretchability, and durability makes the NHSE a promising conductor/electrode solution for flexible/stretchable electronics for applications such as wearable on‐body physiological signal detection, human–machine interaction, and heating e‐skin.

The current evolution of ‘cloud neuroscience’ leads to more efforts with the large-scale EEG applications, by using EEG pipelines to handle the rapidly accumulating EEG data. However, there are a few specific cloud platforms that seek to address the cloud computational challenges of EEG big data analysis to benefit the EEG community. In response to the challenges, a WeBrain cloud platform (https://webrain.uestc.edu.cn/) is designed as a web-based brainformatics platform and computational ecosystem to enable large-scale EEG data storage, exploration and analysis using cloud high-performance computing (HPC) facilities. WeBrain connects researchers from different fields to EEG and multimodal tools that have become the norm in the field and the cloud processing power required to handle those large EEG datasets. This platform provides an easy-to-use system for novice users (even no computer programming skills) and provides satisfactory maintainability, sustainability and flexibility for IT administrators and tool developers. A range of resources are also available on https://webrain.uestc.edu.cn/, including documents, manuals, example datasets related to WeBrain, and collected links to open EEG datasets and tools. It is not necessary for users or administrators to install any software or system, and all that is needed is a modern web browser, which reduces the technical expertise required to use or manage WeBrain. The WeBrain platform is sponsored and driven by the China-Canada-Cuba international brain cooperation project (CCC-Axis, http://ccc-axis.org/), and we hope that WeBrain will be a promising cloud brainformatics platform for exploring brain information in large-scale EEG applications in the EEG community.

Flexible strain sensors play vital role in human–machine interaction. Despite their vast development, a strain sensor having broad strain sensing range, ultralow detection limit, and negligible hysteresis still remains a challenge. Herein, a liquid metal (LM)‐based stretchable resistive strain sensor, prepared by selective wetting and transferring process to attain improved compatibility between LM and polydimethylsiloxane substrate, is reported. This sensor exhibits broad strain sensing range (105%), with ultralow detection limit (0.05%), minimal hysteresis, fast response time (58 ms), and excellent repeatability. When practically demonstrated, this sensor successfully monitored various human activities, such as blink motion monitoring, voice intensity differentiation, heartbeat and wrist pulse monitoring. Moreover, when the current sensor is used in the form of smart kneecap and smart glove, it efficiently detected various human gestures, which confirms its great application potential in the fields of human health and motion monitoring, human–machine interface, and virtual reality applications.

Abstract The multi‐mode pain‐perceptual system (MMPPS) is essential for the human body to perceive noxious stimuli in all circumstances and make an appropriate reaction. Based on the central sensitization mechanism, the MMPPS can switch between different working modes and thus offers a smarter protection mechanism to human body. Accordingly, before injury MMPPS can offer warning of excessive pressure with normal pressure threshold. After injury, extra care on the periphery of damage will be activated by decreasing the pressure threshold. Furthermore, the MMPPS will gradually recover back to a normal state as damage heals. Although current devices can realize basic functions like damage localization and nociceptor signal imitating, the development of a human‐like MMPPS is still a great challenge. Here, a bio‐inspired MMPPS is developed for prosthetics protection, in which all working modes is realized and controlled by mimicking the central sensitization mechanism. Accordingly, the system warns one of a potential injury, identifies the damaged area, and subsequently offers extra care. The proposed system can open new avenues for designing next‐generation prosthetics, especially make other smart sensing systems operate under complete protection against injuries.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental brain disorders in childhood. Despite extensive researches, the neurobiological mechanism underlying ADHD is still left unveiled. Since the deficit functions, such as attention, have been demonstrated in ADHD, in our present study, based on the oddball P3 task, the corresponding electroencephalogram (EEG) of both healthy controls (HCs) and ADHD children was first collected. And we then not only focused on the event-related potential (ERP) evoked during tasks but also investigated related brain networks. Although an insignificant difference in behavior was found between the HCs and ADHD children, significant electrophysiological differences were found in both ERPs and brain networks. In detail, the dysfunctional attention occurred during the early stage of the designed task; as compared to HCs, the reduced P2 and N2 amplitudes in ADHD children were found, and the atypical information interaction might further underpin such a deficit. On the one hand, when investigating the cortical activity, HCs recruited much stronger brain activity mainly in the temporal and frontal regions, compared to ADHD children; on the other hand, the brain network showed atypical enhanced long-range connectivity between the frontal and occipital lobes but attenuated connectivity among frontal, parietal, and temporal lobes in ADHD children. We hope that the findings in this study may be instructive for the understanding of cognitive processing in children with ADHD.

In the above article [1], to track the loss of consciousness (LOC) induced by general anesthesia (GA), we first developed the multi-channel cross fuzzy entropy method to construct the time- varying networks, whose temporal fluctuations were then explored and quantitatively evaluated. Since time-varying network topologies were found to fluctuate from long-range frontal-occipital to short-range prefrontal-frontal connectivity during the LOC period, a new parameter, i.e., the long-range connectivity (LRC) that measured the number of frontal-occipital connectivity, was accordingly calculated and then investigated between the coherence (COH) and cross fuzzy entropy (C-FuzzyEn) approaches, as displayed in Fig. 1. The distinct time-varying fluctuations of both approaches were indeed found within this period, where only C-FuzzyEn effectively captured the consciousness fluctuation induced by the GA.

Decision-making plays an essential role in the interpersonal interactions and cognitive processing of individuals. There has been increasing interest in being able to predict an individual’s decision-making response (i.e., acceptance or rejection). We proposed an electroencephalogram (EEG)-based computational intelligence framework to predict individual responses. Specifically, the discriminative spatial network pattern (DSNP), a supervised learning approach, was applied to single-trial EEG data to extract the DSNP feature from the single-trial brain network. A linear discriminate analysis (LDA) trained on the DSNP features was then used to predict the individual response trial-by-trial. To verify the performance of the proposed DSNP, we recruited two independent subject groups, and recorded the EEGs using two types of EEG systems. The performances of the trial-by-trial predictors achieved an accuracy of 0.88 ± 0.09 for the first dataset, and 0.90 ± 0.10 for the second dataset. These trial-by-trial prediction performances suggested that individual responses could be predicted trial-by-trial by using the specific pattern of single-trial EEG networks, and our proposed method has the potential to establish the biologically inspired artificial intelligence decision system.

Epileptic seizures are considered to be a brain network dysfunction, and chronic recurrent seizures can cause severe brain damage. However, the functional brain network underlying recurrent epileptic seizures is still left unveiled. This study is aimed at exploring the differences in a related brain activity before and after chronic repetitive seizures by investigating the power spectral density (PSD), fuzzy entropy, and functional connectivity in epileptic patients. The PSD analysis revealed differences between the two states at local area, showing postseizure energy accumulation. Besides, the fuzzy entropies of preseizure in the frontal, central, and temporal regions are higher than that of postseizure. Additionally, attenuated long-range connectivity and enhanced local connectivity were also found. Moreover, significant correlations were found between network metrics (i.e., characteristic path length and clustering coefficient) and individual seizure number. The PSD, fuzzy entropy, and network analysis may indicate that the brain is gradually impaired along with the occurrence of epilepsy, and the accumulated effect of brain impairment is observed in individuals with consecutive epileptic bursts. The findings of this study may provide helpful insights into understanding the network mechanism underlying chronic recurrent epilepsy.

Drought is a common natural disaster in barley production, which restricts the growth and development of barley roots and caryopses seriously, thereby decreasing yield and debasing grain quality. However, mechanisms for how drought stress affects barley caryopses and roots development under drought stress are unclear. In this paper, Suluomai1 was treated with drought from flowering to caryopses mature stage. The morphological and structural changes in roots growth and caryopses development of barley were investigated. Drought stress increased root/shoot ratio and eventually led to the 20.16% reduction of ear weight and 7.75% reduction of 1,000-grain weight by affecting the biomass accumulation of roots and caryopses. The barley roots under drought had more lateral roots while the vessel number and volume of roots decreased. Meanwhile, drought stress accelerated the maturation of caryopses, resulting in a decrease in the accumulation of starch but a significant increase of protein accumulation in barley endosperm. There was a significantly positive correlation (0.76) between the area of root vessel and the relative area of protein in endosperm cells under normal condition and drought increased the correlation coefficient (0.81). Transcriptome analysis indicated that drought induced differential expressions of genes in caryopses were mainly involved in encoding storage proteins and protein synthesis pathways. In general, drought caused changes in the morphology and structure of barley roots, and the roots conveyed stress signals to caryopses, inducing differential expression of genes related to protein biosynthesis, ultimately leading to the increase in the accumulation of endosperm protein. The results not only deepen the study on drought mechanism of barley, but also provide theoretical basis for molecular breeding, high-yield cultivation and quality improvement in barley.

The P300 event-related potential (ERP) varies across individuals, and exploring this variability deepens our knowledge of the event, and scope for its potential applications. Previous studies exploring the P300 have relied on either electroencephalography (EEG) or functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We applied simultaneous event-related EEG-fMRI to investigate how the network structure is updated from rest to the P300 task so as to guarantee information processing in the oddball task. We first identified 14 widely distributed regions of interest (ROIs) that were task-associated, including the inferior frontal gyrus and the middle frontal gyrus, etc. The task-activated network was found to closely relate to the concurrent P300 amplitude, and moreover, the individuals with optimized resting-state brain architectures experienced the pruning of network architecture, i.e. decreasing connectivity, when the brain switched from rest to P300 task. Our present simultaneous EEG-fMRI study explored the brain reconfigurations governing the variability in P300 across individuals, which provided the possibility to uncover new biomarkers to predict the potential for personalized control of brain-computer interfaces.

People living with schizophrenia (SCZ) experience severe brain network deterioration. The brain is constantly fizzling with non-linear causal activities measured by electroencephalogram (EEG) and despite the variety of effective connectivity methods, only few approaches can quantify the direct non-linear causal interactions. To circumvent this problem, we are motivated to quantitatively measure the effective connectivity by multivariate transfer entropy (MTE) which has been demonstrated to be able to capture both linear and non-linear causal relationships effectively. In this work, we propose to construct the EEG effective network by MTE and further compare its performance with the Granger causal analysis (GCA) and Bivariate transfer entropy (BVTE). The simulation results quantitatively show that MTE outperformed GCA and BVTE under varied signal-to-noise conditions, edges recovered, sensitivity, and specificity. Moreover, its applications to the P300 task EEG of healthy controls (HC) and SCZ patients further clearly show the deteriorated network interactions of SCZ, compared to that of the HC. The MTE provides a novel tool to potentially deepen our knowledge of the brain network deterioration of the SCZ.

Multiple studies, which studied cortical generators and cerebral networks of P300 based on electroencephalogram (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging, have investigated the possible mechanism underlying the inter-subject variability of P300 component. However, few studies have investigated the large-scale networks of P300 as well as the potential relationships between large-scale networks and P300, particularly in EEG signal. When using group independent component analysis (gICA) to investigate the large-scale EEG networks, some resting-state networks, such as the default mode network, have been observed, while the related task-state networks (TSNs) of P300 are still unknown. In this paper, we estimated the time courses of cortical voxels following EEG source localization and then adopted gICA at the group level to identify the related P300-TSNs. Thereafter, we constructed and further investigated the potential relationships between the properties of functional network connectivity (FNC) and P300 amplitude. Our findings revealed six best-fit common functional networks that participated in the generation of P300, namely, the primary visual network, visual network, central executive network, left parietal network, attention network, and sensorimotor network. Specifically, the FNC properties significantly related to the P300 amplitude, as well as some FNC connections. In addition, when using FNC properties to classify the high- and low-amplitude groups, a relatively high-classification accuracy of 87.26% for linear discriminant analysis and of 86.31% for support vector machine were achieved. These findings confirmed the validation of gICA in mining large-scale networks in cortical EEG and may help us better understand the inter-subject P300 variability.

Despite the P300 event-related potential (ERP) differences between distinct stimulus sequences, the effect of stimulus sequence on the brain network is still left unveiled. To uncover the corresponding effect of stimulus sequence, we thus investigated the differences of functional brain networks, when a target (T) or standard (S) stimulus was presented preceding another T as background context. Results of this study demonstrated that, when an S was first presented preceding a T (i.e., ST sequence), the P300 experiencing large amplitude was evoked by the T, along with strong network architecture. In contrast, if a T was presented in advance [i.e., target-to-target (TT) sequence], decreased P300 amplitude and attenuated network efficiency were demonstrated. Additionally, decreased activations in regions, such as inferior frontal gyrus and superior frontal gyrus were also revealed in TT sequence. Particularly, the effect of stimulus sequence on P300 network could be quantitatively measured by brain network properties, the increase in network efficiency corresponded to large P300 amplitude evoked in P300 task.

The accurate identification of an attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) subject has remained a challenge for both neuroscience research and clinical diagnosis. Unfortunately, the traditional methods concerning the classification model and feature extraction usually depend on the single-channel model and static measurements (i.e., functional connectivity, FC) in the small, homogenous single-site dataset, which is limited and may cause the loss of intrinsic information in functional MRI (fMRI). In this study, we proposed a new two-stage network structure by combing a separated channel convolutional neural network (SC-CNN) with an attention-based network (SC-CNN-attention) to discriminate ADHD and healthy controls on a large-scale multi-site database (5 sites and n = 1019). To utilize both intrinsic temporal feature and the interactions of temporal dependent in whole-brain resting-state fMRI, in the first stage of our proposed network structure, a SC- CNN is used to learn the temporal feature of each brain region, and an attention network in the second stage is adopted to capture temporal dependent features among regions and extract fusion features. Using a “leave-one-site-out” cross-validation framework, our proposed method obtained a mean classification accuracy of 68.6% on five different sites, which is higher than those reported in previous studies. The classification results demonstrate that our proposed network is robust to data variants and is also replicated across sites. The combination of the SC-CNN with the attention network is powerful to capture the intrinsic fMRI information to discriminate ADHD across multi-site resting-state fMRI data.

Surface electromyography (sEMG) sensors are widely used in the fields of ergonomics, sports science, and medical research. However, current sEMG sensors cannot recognize the various exercise intensities efficiently because of the strain interference, low conductivity, and poor skin-conformability of their electrodes. Here, we present a highly conductive, strain-insensitive, and low electrode−skin impedance elastic sEMG electrode, which consists of a three-layered structure (polydimethylsiloxane/galinstan + polydimethylsiloxane/silver-coated nickel + polydimethylsiloxane). The bottom layer of the electrode consists of vertically conductive magnetic particle paths, which are insensitive to stretching strain, collect sEMG charge from human skin, and finally transfer it to processing circuits via an intermediate layer. Our skin-friendly electrode exhibits high conductivity (0.237 and 1.635 mΩ·cm resistivities in transverse and longitudinal directions, respectively), low electrode−skin impedance (47.23 kΩ at 150 Hz), excellent strain-insensitivity (10% change of electrode−skin impedance within the 0−25% strain range), high fatigue resistance (>1500 cycles), and good conformability with skin. During various exercise intensities, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of our electrode increased by 22.53 dB, which is 206% and 330% more than that of traditional Ag/AgCl and copper electrode, respectively. The ability of our electrode to efficiently recognize various exercise intensities confirms its great application potential for the field of sports health.

Recently, scalp electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) multimodal fusion has been pursued in an effort to study human brain function and dysfunction to obtain more comprehensive information on brain activity in which the spatial and temporal resolutions are both satisfactory. However, a more flexible and easy-to-use toolbox for EEG–fMRI multimodal fusion is still lacking. In this study, we therefore developed a freely available and open-source MATLAB graphical user interface toolbox, known as the Neuroscience Information Toolbox (NIT), for EEG–fMRI multimodal fusion analysis. The NIT consists of three modules: (1) the fMRI module, which has batch fMRI preprocessing, nuisance signal removal, bandpass filtering, and calculation of resting-state measures; (2) the EEG module, which includes artifact removal, extracting EEG features (event onset, power, and amplitude), and marking interesting events; and (3) the fusion module, in which fMRI-informed EEG analysis and EEG-informed fMRI analysis are included. The NIT was designed to provide a convenient and easy-to-use toolbox for researchers, especially for novice users. The NIT can be downloaded for free at http://www.neuro.uestc.edu.cn/NIT.html, and detailed information, including the introduction of NIT, user’s manual and example data sets, can also be observed on this website. We hope that the NIT is a promising toolbox for exploring brain information in various EEG and fMRI studies.

Cognitive deficits in schizophrenia are correlated with the dysfunctions of distinct brain regions including anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and prefrontal cortex (PFC). Apart from the dysfunctions of the intrinsic connectivity of related areas, how the coupled neural populations work is also crucial in related processes. Twenty-four patients with schizophrenia (SZs) and 24 matched healthy controls (HCs) were recruited in our study. Based on the electroencephalogram (EEG) datasets recorded, the Dynamic Causal Modeling (DCM) was then adopted to estimate how the brain architecture adapts among related areas in SZs and to investigate the mechanism that accounts for their cognitive deficits. The distinct winning models in SZs and HCs consistently emphasized the importance of ACC in regulating the elicitations of P300s. Specifically, comparing to that in HCs, the winning model in SZs uncovered a compensatory pathway from dorsolateral PFC to intraparietal sulcus that promised the SZs' accomplishing P300 tasks. The findings demonstrated that the “disconnectivity hypothesis” is helpful and useful in explaining the cognitive deficits in SZs, while the brain architecture adapted with related compensatory pathway promises the limited brain cognitions in SZs. This study provides a new viewpoint that deepens our understanding of the cognitive deficits in schizophrenia.

Periodic visual stimulation can evoke the steady-state visual potential (SSVEP) in the brain. Owing to its superior characteristics, the SSVEP has been widely used in neural engineering and cognitive neuroscience studies. However, the underlying mechanisms of the SSVEP are not well understood. In this study, we introduced a brain reconfiguration methodology to explore the possible mechanisms of the SSVEP. The EEG data from five periodic stimuli consistently indicated that the periodic visual stimulation could induce resting-state brain network reconfiguration and that the responses evoked by the stimuli were correlated to the network reconfiguration indexes. For each stimulus frequency, larger response amplitudes corresponded to higher reconfiguration indexes from the resting-state network to a stimulus-evoked network. These findings demonstrate that an external periodic visual stimulation can induce the modification of intrinsic oscillatory activities by reconfiguring resting-state activity at a network level, which could facilitate the responses evoked by the stimulus. These findings provide new insights into the response mechanisms of periodic visual stimulation.

A central issue in cognitive science is understanding how learning induces cognitive and neural plasticity, which helps illuminate the biological basis of learning. Research in the past few decades showed that action video gaming (AVG) offered new, important perspectives on learning-related cognitive and neural plasticity. However, it is still unclear whether cognitive and neural plasticity is observable after a brief AVG session. Using behavioral and electrophysiological measures, this study examined the plasticity of visual selective attention (VSA) associated with a 1 h AVG session. Both AVG experts and non-experts participated in this study. Their VSA was assessed prior to and after the AVG session. Within-group comparisons on the participants' performance before and after the AVG session showed improvements in response time in both groups and modulations of electrophysiological measures in the non-experts. Furthermore, between-group comparisons showed that the experts had superior VSA, relative to the non-experts, prior to the AVG session. These findings suggested an association between the plasticity of VSA and AVG. Most importantly, this study showed that the plasticity of VSA was observable after even a 1 h AVG session.

Reference electrode standardization technique (REST) has been increasingly acknowledged and applied as a re-reference technique to transform an actual multi-channels recordings to approximately zero reference ones in electroencephalography/event-related potentials (EEG/ERPs) community around the world in recent years. However, a more easy-to-use toolbox for re-referencing scalp EEG data to zero reference is still lacking. Here, we have therefore developed two open-source MATLAB toolboxes for REST of scalp EEG. One version of REST is closely integrated into EEGLAB, which is a popular MATLAB toolbox for processing the EEG data; and another is a batch version to make it more convenient and efficient for experienced users. Both of them are designed to provide an easy-to-use for novice researchers and flexibility for experienced researchers. All versions of the REST toolboxes can be freely downloaded at http://www.neuro.uestc.edu.cn/rest/Down.html, and the detailed information including publications, comments and documents on REST can also be found from this website. An example of usage is given with comparative results of REST and average reference. We hope these user-friendly REST toolboxes could make the relatively novel technique of REST easier to study, especially for applications in various EEG studies.

One of the most fundamental issues during an EEG study is choosing an available neutral reference. The infinity zero reference obtained by the reference electrode standardization technique (REST) has been recommended and used for its higher accuracy. This paper examined three traditional references, the average reference (AR), the linked mastoids reference (LM), and REST, in the study of the EEG center of mass (CM) using simulated and real ERPs. In the simulation, the relative error of REST was the smallest among the references. As for the ERP data with the visual oddball paradigm, the dynamic CM trajectory and its traveling velocity obtained by REST characterized three typical stages in spatial domain and temporal speed metrics, which provided useful information in addition to the distinct ERP waveform in the temporal domain. The results showed that the CM traveling from the frontal to parietal areas corresponding to the earlier positive components (i.e., P200 and P250), stays temporarily at the parietal area corresponding to P300 and then returns to the frontal area during the recovery stage. Compared with REST, AR, and LM not only changed the amplitude of P300 significantly but distorted the CM trajectory and its instantaneous velocity. As REST continues to provide objective results, we recommend that REST be used in future EEG/ERP CM studies.

The neuronal synchronous discharging may cause an epileptic seizure. Currently, most of the studies conducted to investigate the mechanism of epilepsy are based on EEGs or functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) recorded during the ictal discharging or the resting-state, and few studies have probed into the dynamic patterns during the inter-ictal discharging that are much easier to record in clinical applications. Here, we propose a time-varying network analysis based on adaptive directed transfer function to uncover the dynamic brain network patterns during the inter-ictal discharging. In addition, an algorithm based on the time-varying outflow of information derived from the network analysis is developed to detect the epileptogenic zone. The analysis performed revealed the time-varying network patterns during different stages of inter-ictal discharging; the epileptogenic zone was activated prior to the discharge onset then worked as the source to propagate the activity to other brain regions. Consistence between the epileptogenic zones detected by our proposed approach and the actual epileptogenic zones proved that time-varying network analysis could not only reveal the underlying neural mechanism of epilepsy, but also function as a useful tool in detecting the epileptogenic zone based on the EEGs in the inter-ictal discharging.
