This article is an abridged version of a report by an advisory council to the German government on the psychosocial problems facing refugee families from war zones who have settled in Germany. It omits the detailed information contained in the report about matters that are specific to the German health system and asylum laws, and includes just those insights and strategies that may be applicable to assisting refugees in other host countries as well. The focus is on understanding the developmental risks faced by refugee children when they or family members are suffering from trauma-related psychological disorders, and on identifying measures that can be taken to address these risks. The following recommendations are made: recognizing the high level of psychosocial problems present in these families, providing family-friendly living accommodations, teaching positive parenting skills, initiating culture-sensitive interventions, establishing training programs to support those who work with refugees, expanding the availability of trained interpreters, facilitating access to education and health care, and identifying intervention requirements through screening and other measures. Background: Child maltreatment is because of its prevalence and consequences one of the main reasons for global health inequalities and a major public health problem. The medical field offers many opportunities to support affected children. However, there is often very limited awareness concerning child protection beyond a few engaged professionals. The present work aims to survey the state of knowledge and capacities in view of child protection in the medical field and explores health professionals' perspectives on a potential need for action. Methods: From 06/2016 until 02/2021 3,360 health professionals were interviewed. Using quantitative and qualitative items the questionnaire gathered demographic and professional background information as well as assessments regarding the awareness of child protection, capacities in child protection among health professionals and training offers in medicine. Results: The analysis indicated that the topic child protection in medicine is not as present as the high prevalence demands it. The majority (94.0%; n = 3,159) of the probands stated that they need more knowledge and capacities regarding child protection in medicine. More than half of the probands assessed the importance of the issue child protection as low among health professionals. The reasons cited included child protection as being an uncomfortable topic, unwillingness among managers, and a lack of training on the topic. Conclusions: It turned out that there is too little awareness and importance regarding child protection in the medical field. Hence, it is difficult to ensure an adequate care for those affected. Child protection topics should be made mandatory in the training curricula of all health professionals as well as quality standards for prevention and intervention should be implemented in medical institutions. Hintergrund: Schwere psychische Erkrankungen bei Eltern erhöhen das Risiko für Vernachlässigung, Misshandlung oder sexuellen Missbrauch („adverse childhood experiences“, ACE) der Kinder.Fragestellung: Darstellung der aktuellen Situation von Kinderschutzfragen in der erwachsenenpsychiatrischen Versorgung in Deutschland und das Ableiten von Bedarfen und potenziellen Lösungsstrategien.Material und Methode: Anhand einer selektiven Literaturrecherche werden Bedarfe und die aktuelle Situation in Deutschland dargestellt sowie potenzielle Lösungsstrategien aufgezeigt. Ergänzt wird die Analyse durch eine deskriptive Auswertung konkreter Beratungsanfragen an die Medizinische Kinderschutzhotline.Ergebnisse: Trotz des bekannten umfassenden Einflusses psychischer Erkrankungen von Eltern auf ihre Kinder wird bei erwachsenenpsychiatrischen Patienten bisher nicht systematisch erfasst, ob sie minderjährige Kinder zu versorgen haben. Es mangelt an systematischer und umfassender Unterstützung für diese Familien. Von allen Anrufen bei dem Projekt der Medizinischen Kinderschutzhotline machen Anrufe aus dem Bereich der Erwachsenenpsychiatrie und -psychosomatik mit Abstand den höchsten Anteil aus dem Bereich der Erwachsenenmedizin aus.Schlussfolgerungen: Eine verstärkte Aufmerksamkeit gegenüber Kinderschutzthemen ist im Bereich der erwachsenenpsychiatrischen Behandlung notwendig. Children and adolescents are a vulnerable group to develop post-traumatic stress symptoms after natural or man-made disasters. In the light of increasing numbers of refugees under the age of 18 years worldwide, there is a significant need for effective treatments. This meta-analytic review investigates specific psychosocial treatments for children and adolescents after man-made and natural disasters. In a systematic literature search using MEDLINE, EMBASE and PsycINFO, as well as hand-searching existing reviews and contacting professional associations, 36 studies were identified. Randomand mixed-effects models were applied to test for average effect sizes and moderating variables. Overall, treatments showed high effect sizes in pre-post comparisons (Hedge's g = 1.34) and medium effect sizes as compared with control conditions (Hedge's g = 0.43). Treatments investigated by at least two studies were cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), narrative exposure therapy for children (KIDNET) and classroom- based interventions, which showed similar effect sizes. However, studies were very heterogenic with regard to their outcomes. Effects were moderated by type of profession (higher level of training leading to higher effect sizes). A number of effective psychosocial treatments for child and adolescent survivors of disasters exist. CBT, EMDR, KIDNET and classroom-based interventions can be equally recommended. Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the self-reported stability of psychopathic traits in adolescents in residential care (both child welfare and juvenile justice placed juveniles) and potential influencing factors. Methods: We applied the Youth Psychopathic traits Inventory (YPI) in a sample of 162 adolescents (M = 15.0 years, SD = 1.3) over a mean time interval of 11 months (min. 6, max. 21 months, SD = 3.14). Results: There was no significant difference in YPI total score nor in the three underlying dimensions Grandiose-Manipulative (GM), Callous-Unemotional (CU), and Impulsive-Irresponsible (II) between t1 and t2. Furthermore, approximately 70% of the adolescents showed no clinically significant reliable change on the YPI total score (as measured with the reliable change index), 15% improved, 15% deteriorated. The strongest predictor for psychopathic traits at t2 were psychopathic traits at t1. Additional predictors for higher levels of general psychopathic traits was male sex, for CU-traits male sex and lower levels of internalizing mental health problems, and for II-traits higher levels of externalizing mental health problems. Generally, the three reliable change groups (increase, no change, decrease) did not seemed to differ on relevant factors. Conclusions: Our results add to the findings that psychopathic traits are relatively stable in this at-risk group over approximately a 1-year time interval. Background: Interface management after inpatient care for mentally ill children and adolescents has been proven to be a breaking point in good transition of care between child and adolescent psychiatry, social welfare services, schools, job centre and the judicial system. Criteria for successful discharge management do not exist in child and adolescent psychiatry. Aim of the study ASpeKT was to survey parents on their perception of interface management and to derive recommendations for discharge management. Methods: Data regarding interface management were retrieved from parents (T3, n = 124, T4, n = 81) 6 months (T3) and 12 months (T4) after discharge. Results: The parents stated that accessible help after discharge from inpatient treatment is essential for stability and requires a good coordination. Parents named that they perceived helpful for successful interface management: a case manager, early round table meetings, support in returning to school, seamless access to outpatient follow-up appointments as well as information on further treatment options and contact data. Conclusion: From the perspective of affected families a proactive early individual and reliable care coordination by a constant contact person is essential for a good discharge management. Hintergrund: Kinder psychisch erkrankter Eltern sind aufgrund deren Erkrankung vielfältigen Belastungen ausgesetzt. Altersspezifische präventive Maßnahmen und Interventionen sind notwendig, um das Risiko für Kinder, selbst zu erkranken, zu minimieren.Fragestellung: Erfassung evidenzbasierter Präventionsangebote auf nationaler und internationaler Ebene für Kinder unterschiedlicher Altersgruppen zwischen 3 und 14 Jahren mit depressiven oder angsterkrankten Eltern.Material und Methode: Anhand einer systematischen Literaturrecherche wurden aktuelle Präventions- und Interventionsmaßnahmen für die benannte Zielgruppe erfasst und hinsichtlich Altersspezifität und Evidenz analysiert.Ergebnisse: Aus 107.573 Publikationen konnten 43 Interventionen ermittelt werden, von denen nach Bewertung der Evidenz der Ansätze 25 Projekte in die Analyse eingeschlossen wurden. Für die verschiedenen Altersklassen werden die jeweils am besten evaluierten Projekte vorgestellt.Schlussfolgerung: Es gibt eine Vielzahl von Projekten, diese sind jedoch mehrheitlich nicht ausreichend evaluiert bzw. psychometrisch abgesichert. Die wenigen gut evaluierten Projekte für Kinder entsprechen allerdings weitgehend den altersspezifischen Bedürfnissen. Die evaluierten Projekte im Kindergartenalter sind elternbezogen und beziehen sich auf Elemente des Elterntrainings. Für Schulkinder gibt es verschiedene präventive Angebote, die insbesondere die Stärkung von Ressourcen bei Kindern adressieren, wie etwa die Verbesserung des Selbstwertes und die Entwicklung von Copingstrategien. Die Projekte für Jugendliche beziehen sich auf die eigene Entwicklung der Jugendlichen mit psychoedukativen Elementen, Verbesserung sozialer Beziehungen u.s.w. Background: Studies have shown that youths with high psychopathic traits have an earlier onset of delinquent behavior, have higher levels of delinquent behavior, and show higher rates of recidivism than youths with low psychopathic traits. Furthermore, psychopathic traits have received much attention as a robust indicator for delinquent and aggressive behavior in both boys and girls. However, there is a notable lack of research on gender differences in the relationship between psychopathic traits and delinquent behavior. In addition, most of the studies on psychopathic traits and delinquent behavior were conducted in high-risk samples. Therefore, the first objective of the current study was to investigate the relationship between psychopathic traits and specific forms of self-reported delinquency in a high-risk sample for juvenile delinquency as well as in a general population sample. The second objective was to examine the influence of gender on this relationship. Finally, we investigated whether the moderating effect of gender was comparable in the high-risk sample for juvenile delinquency and the general population sample. Methods: Participants were 1220 adolescents of the German-speaking part of Switzerland (N = 351 high-risk sample, N = 869 general population sample) who were between 13 and 21 years of age. The Youth Psychopathic traits Inventory (YPI) was used to assess psychopathic traits. To assess the lifetime prevalence of the adolescents' delinquent behavior, 15 items derived from a self-report delinquency instrument were used. Logistic regression analyses were used to examine the relationship between gender, psychopathic traits and self-reported delinquency across both samples. Results: Our results demonstrated that psychopathic traits are related to non-violent and violent offenses. We found no moderating effect of gender and therefore we could not detect differences in the moderating effect of gender between the samples. However, there was a moderating effect of sample for the relationship between the callous and unemotional YPI scale and non-violent offenses. In addition, the regression weights of gender and sample were, for non-violent offenses, reduced to non-significance when adding the interaction terms. Conclusions: Psychopathic traits were found to be present in a wide range of youths (i.e., high-risk as well as general population sample, young children as well as adolescents, boys as well as girls) and were related to delinquent behavior. The influence of age and YPI scales on self-reported delinquency was more robust than the influence of gender and sample. Therefore, screening for psychopathic traits among young children with psychosocial adjustment problems seems relevant for developing effective intervention strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Child maltreatment (CM) has severe effects on psychological and physical health. The hypothalamicpituitary- adrenal (HPA) axis, the major stress system of the body, is dysregulated after CM. The analysis of cortisol and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) in scalp hair presents a new and promising methodological approach to assess chronic HPA axis activity. This study investigated the effects of CM on HPA axis activity in the last trimester of pregnancy by measuring the two important signaling molecules, cortisol and DHEA in hair, shortly after parturition. In addition, we explored potential effects of maternal CM on her offspring's endocrine milieu during pregnancy by measuring cortisol and DHEA in newborns' hair. Methods: CM was assessed with the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ). Cortisol and DHEA were measured in hair samples of 94 mothers and 30 newborns, collected within six days after delivery. Associations of maternal CM on her own and her newborn's cortisol as well as DHEA concentrations in hair were analyzed with heteroscedastic regression models. Results: Higher CM was associated with significantly higher DHEA levels, but not cortisol concentrations in maternal hair. Moreover, maternal CM was positively, but only as a non-significant trend, associated with higher DHEA levels in the newborns' hair. Conclusions: Results suggest that the steroid milieu of the mother, at least on the level of DHEA, is altered after CM, possibly leading to non-genomic transgenerational effects on the developing fetus in utero. Indeed, we observed on an explorative level first hints that the endocrine milieu for the developing child might be altered in CM mothers. These results need extension and replication in future studies. The number of underage refugees arriving in Germany has rapidly increased since 2015. Many of these children and adolescents have been and still are, exposed to a large number of stressful circumstances. The group of those helping refugee minors is heterogeneous with both volunteers and professional workers from the fields of child welfare and healthcare services. Easily applicable instruments to assess both burdens and resources are needed in order to plan appropriate interventions. This paper focuses on instruments for assessing the circumstances of refugee minors and includes pilot data of an online-based screening instrument to assess burdens and resources (providing online resource and trauma assessment for refugees, PORTA). Field application was tested by the staff of a clearing and preclearing institution with 33 cases and good practical feasibility was reported. Applying a simple to use screening instrument for refugee minors and their helpers, which is available in several languages creates the possibility of a shared definition of problems and solutions and is beneficial to helpers (e.g. volunteers, youth welfare services and medical doctors) as well as refugee minors. Background: There is growing evidence that it is important to have well-standardized procedures for identifying the mental health needs of youths in welfare and juvenile justice institutions. One of the most widely used tools for mental health screening in the juvenile justice system is the Massachusetts Youth Screening Instrument-second version (MAYSI-2). To contribute to the body of research examining the utility of the MAYSI-2 as a mental health screening tool; the first objective of the current study was to examine the relationship between the MAYSI-2 and the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children, Present and Lifetime version (K-SADS-PL) in a sample of Swiss youths in welfare and juvenile justice institutions using a cross-sectional design. Secondly, as the sample was drawn from the French-, German- and Italian-speaking parts of Switzerland, the three languages were represented in the total sample and consequently differences between the language regions were analyzed as well. The third objective was to examine gender differences in this relationship. Methods: Participants were 297 boys and 149 girls (mean age = 16.2, SD = 2.5) recruited from 64 youth welfare and juvenile justice institutions in Switzerland. The MAYSI-2 was used to screen for mental health or behavioral problems that could require further evaluation. Psychiatric classification was based on the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children, Present and Lifetime version (K-SADS-PL). Binomial logistic regression analysis was used to predict (cluster of) psychiatric disorders from MAYSI-2 scales. Results: The regression analyses revealed that the MAYSI-2 scales generally related well to their corresponding homotypic (cluster of) psychiatric disorders. For example, the alcohol/drug use scale identified the presence of any substance use disorder and the suicide ideation scale identified youths reporting suicide ideation or suicide attempts. Several MAYSI-2 scales were also related to heterotypic (cluster of) psychiatric disorders. For example, the MAYSI-2 scale alcohol/drug use, was positively related to any disruptive disorder. Furthermore, the results revealed gender differences in the relationship between the MAYSI-2 and K-SADS-PL (e.g., in the boys' subsample no MAYSI-2 scale was significantly related to any affective disorder; whereas, in the girls' subsample the MAYSI-2 scales depressed-anxious and somatic complaints were significantly related to any affective disorder). Conclusions: Overall, The MAYSI-2 seems to serve well as a first-stage screen to identify service needs for youths in welfare and juvenile justice institutions in Switzerland. Introduction: Adolescent transitions to adulthood are a vulnerable phase for the development of mental illnesses. Additionally, there are often disruptions in psychiatric care delivery during the transition phase, potentially leading to a considerable treatment delay with a high risk of early chronification. Thus, the health care system and professionals in both child and adolescent psychiatry and adult psychiatry should be given greater consideration to the transition phase. Objectives: The aim of the project ProTransition is the development of an online course for health care professionals to give in-depth knowledge of "transition psychiatry", practical guidance and to sensitize them for the special challenges and needs of young adults with mental illness. Methods: The online-course is being developed at theDepartment of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry/Psychotherapy, Ulm and is expected to start in May 2021. It comprises e.g. special psychopathology of emerging adulthood, clinical interventions for adolescents with mental illness or legal aspects. An innovative and multididactical approach with specialized texts, case-studies, online-chats and interviews with experts and young people is applied. Additionally, user satisfaction with the online course will be evaluated. Results: On the basis of the gained experiences, ideas for new transition-psychiatric treatment models will be derived. The accompanying research will point out the status quo and the course-related increasing knowledge of health care professionals regarding transition psychiatry. First results are expected in November 2021. Conclusions: As transition psychiatry is facing great difficulties and challenges, professionals should be adequately educated. Introduction: German mental health care providers report to encounter many cases of NSSI in their professional context, but only around 50% know about the treatment guidelines for NSSI of children and adolescents. Many consider professional training about NSSI as necessary for themselves. In response to this need, within the project Star Train different strategies of dissemination of the content of the guidelines were developed. Objectives: This study aims at comparing the effectiveness of different strategies of dissemination: printed material, e-learning and blended-learning. Methods: Participants were randomly assigned to one of three different learning formats: printed material, e-learning, and blended-learning. Via online-survey participants provide preand post-training self-assessments of their knowledge of NSSI, practical skills, self-efficacy in handling cases of NSSI and attitudes towards NSSI and those affected. Additionally a multiple-choicetest of NSSI is assessed. For data-analyses between-group and within-group comparisons were conducted using a mixed design ANOVA. To ensure quality of learning formats, user-satisfaction was surveyed. Results: Data of the pretest-posttest comparison group design show that knowledge, practical skills, and self-efficacy in handling cases of NSSI raise for all participants and that attitudes towards NSSI and those affected are improved. There is no difference between the learning formats, thus all participants profit equally from their education. User satisfaction is high. Conclusions: Results of this study suggest that the developed different training strategies can contribute equally to a better understanding and enhance skills of professionals regarding NSSI. Introduction: Information about therapeutic serum levels of fluoxetine (FLX) and its major metabolite norfl uoxetine (NORFLX) in children and adolescents is scarce. Methods: Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) of FLX was routinely performed in 71 subjects treated for a major depressive disorder (MDD) (10-60 mg/d FLX, median: 20 mg/d). Correlations between serum concentration and dosage, age, gender, smoking habits and adverse events were analysed. Results: Serum concentrations of the active moiety (FLX + NORFLX) ranged from 21 to 613 ng/mL (mean concentration of 213 ± 118 ng/mL, median: 185 ng/mL). High inter-individual variability in serum concentrations of the active moiety of FLX at each dosage level was observed and no relationship between serum concentration and clinical outcome was found. Apart from smoking, none of the factors tested had a significant effect on the serum concentration. Discussion: It was shown that serum concentrations of the active moiety of FLX in children and adolescents seem to be similar to those in adults, with a high level of inter-individual variation. Background: Traumatization in childhood can result in lifelong health impairment and may have a negative impact on other areas of life such as education, social contacts and employment as well. Despite the frequent occurrence of traumatization, which is reflected in a 14.5 percent prevalence rate of severe child abuse and neglect, the economic burden of the consequences is hardly known. The objective of this prevalence-based cost-of-illness study is to show how impairment of the individual is reflected in economic trauma follow-up costs borne by society as a whole in Germany and to compare the results with other countries' costs. Methods: From a societal perspective trauma follow-up costs were estimated using a bottom-up approach. The literature-based prevalence rate includes emotional, physical and sexual abuse as well as physical and emotional neglect in Germany. Costs are derived from individual case scenarios of child endangerment presented in a German cost-benefit-analysis. A comparison with trauma follow-up costs in Australia, Canada and the USA is based on purchasing power parity. Results: The annual trauma follow-up costs total to a margin of EUR 11.1 billion for the lower bound and to EUR 29.8 billion for the upper bound. This equals EUR 134.84 and EUR 363.58, respectively, per capita for the German population. These results conform to the ones obtained from cost studies conducted in Australia (lower bound) and Canada (upper bound), whereas the result for the United States is much lower. Conclusion: Child abuse and neglect result in trauma follow-up costs of economically relevant magnitude for the German society. Although the result is well in line with other countries' costs, the general lack of data should be fought in order to enable more detailed future studies. Guidelines for the treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults advocate methylphenidate as first-line treatment. The aim of this study was to review the effectiveness of methylphenidate treatment of adult ADHD and to examine the influence of methods on meta-analytic results. Electronic databases were searched to identify clinical trials comparing methylphenidate with placebo in the treatment of adult ADHD. Studies were summarised with meta-analytic methods. Subgroup analyses were conducted with respect to parallel group versus cross-over trials and self versus observer ratings. The relationship between dosage and effect size was explored by weighted regression analysis. The results were tested for publication bias, and several sensitivity analyses were performed. Findings and methods were compared with a previous meta-analysis. Eighteen studies met the inclusion criteria of which 16 were included in the meta-analysis. The overall effect size (d = 0.42) was significantly different from zero, but was only half the size expected on the basis of a previous meta-analysis. No significant differences could be observed in the subgroup analyses. The regression analysis showed no significant influence of mean daily dose on effect size. These results contradict findings of a previous meta-analysis and challenge guideline recommendations. Methodological issues in meta-analyses are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background. This study examined the prevalence of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), suicide attempts, suicide threats and suicidal ideation in a German school sample and compared the rates with a similar sample of adolescents from the midwestern USA by using cross-nationally validated assessment tools. Method. Data were provided from 665 adolescents (mean age 14.8 years, S.D.=0.66, range 14-17 years) in a school setting. Students completed the Self-Harm Behavior Questionnaire (SHBQ), the Ottawa Self-Injury Inventory (OSI) and a German version of the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale (CES-D). Results. A quarter of the participants (25.6%) endorsed at least one act of NSSI in their life, and 9.5% of those students answered that they had hurt themselves repetitively (more than four times). Forty-three (6.5%) of the students reported a history of a suicide attempt. No statistically significant differences were observed between the German and US samples in terms of self-injury or suicidal behaviors. Conclusions. By using the same validated assessment tools, no differences were found in the prevalence and characteristics of self-injury and suicidal behaviors between adolescents from Germany and the USA. Suicide is among the leading causes of death among adolescents and suicide risk is particularly high after discharge from psychiatric inpatient care. Therefore, interventions to reduce suicidal thoughts and behaviours (STBs) among adolescents discharged from psychiatric inpatient care are integral for successful suicide prevention among this group. However, such interventions are scarce. EMIRA aims to close this important gap in mental health services by developing an ecological momentary intervention (i.e., intervention delivered in real-time and within one’s natural setting) consisting of a personalized, automatically triggered crisis support smartphone app to reduce STBs after discharge from psychiatric inpatient care among adolescents aged 14-21 years at risk for suicide. First, we will conduct qualitative interviews with adolescents aged 14-21 years who previously experienced STBs, their parents and health care providers to identify their intervention needs and safety concerns regarding ecological momentary assessment (EMA). Next, we will investigate the short-term variability of STBs and their cognitive and physiological risk factors among adolescents aged 14-21 years using EMA (app-based self-report + wrist worn device). Based on our results and past research we will develop a personalized crisis support smartphone app (mobile safety planning) that is not only self-accessible but starts automatically based on the presence of pre-identified STB risk factors. Finally, we will conduct two consecutive studies to test the feasibility, efficacy and cost-effectiveness of the developed ecological momentary intervention in reducing STBs after discharge from psychiatric inpatient care among adolescents aged 14-21 years at risk for suicide. Methylphenidate (MPH) is the most common used drug in child and adolescent psychiatry. Despite of this fact, however, little is known about its exact pharmacological mechanisms. Here we investigated the toxic effects of MPH in vitro in human embryonic kidney (HEK-293) cells stably expressing the human dopamine transporter (HEK-hDAT cells) and in cultured rat embryonic (E14.5) mesencephalic cultures. MPH alone (up to 1 mM) affected neither the growth of HEK-hDAT cells nor the survival of dopaminergic (DA) neurons in primary cultures after treatment up to 72 h. No differences in neuronal arborisation or in the density of synapses were detected. 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium (MPP+) showed no toxic effect in HEK-293 cells, but had significant toxic effects in HEK-hDAT cells and DA neurons. MPH (1 µM – 1 mM) dose-dependently reduced this cytotoxicity in HEK-hDAT cells and primary mesencephalic DA neurons. The presented results show that application of MPH alone does not have any toxic effect on DA cells in vitro. The neurotoxic effects of MPP+ could be significantly reduced by co-application of MPH, an effect that is most likely explained by MPH blocking the DAT. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examined the discriminant validity of the German version of CBCL in two large samples of referred and non-referred children and adolescents which were matched for age, sex and socio-economic status. The combined sample that was used for statistical analysis consists of 2,058 referred and 2,058 non-referred boys and girls between 4 and 18 years of age (mean age: referred boys=10.9 years, non-referred boys=10.9 years, referred girls=11.3 years, non-referred girls=11.1 years). Referral status was used as validity criterion. Statistical procedures included Odds Ratios, Total Predictive Values, ROC analyses and discriminant analyses. Results indicated that the discriminant validity of the German version of CBCL is comparable to the original English version. With the use of CBCL Total Problem Score as predictor (cut-off T≥ 60) 83.8 % of children and adolescents could correctly be classified (sensitivity 83.6 %, specificity 83.9 %). Symptoms of the “Attention Problems Scale” show the highest discriminative power to distinguish between disturbed and undisturbed children and adolescents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The efficacy and safety of atomoxetine, the only licensed non-stimulant pharmacological treatment option for ADHD in Europe, is well investigated in clinical trials, the long-term effects in the developing brain still remain elusive. In vitro studies prove that besides the well-known inhibition of the norepinephrine transporter (NET) atomoxetine acts as a blocker of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor. Here we present an in vivo study carried out to investigate atomoxetine’s effect in the maturing rat brain. Methods: Pregnant Crl:SD(CD) rats were treated with atomoxetine (3 mg/kg, i.p.) and sodium chloride (0.9%, i.p.), for the period equivalent to human second to third trimenon of pregnancy. After the end of treatment hippocampus, prefrontal cortex, mesencephalon and striatum from embryos and dams were isolated for analysis of gene expression. Results: Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) analysis revealed altered expression of genes of the monoaminergic and glutamatergic system in both embryos and dams. Discussion: This study gives hints that atomoxetine might alter transcriptional regulation of genes of the monoaminergic and glutamatergic system in an age-dependent manner.
