Background: Mufangji tang (MFJT) is composed of Ramulus Cinnamomi, Radix Ginseng, Cocculus orbiculatus (Linn.) DC., and Gypsum. In clinical settings, MFJT has been effectively employed in addressing a range of respiratory disorders, notably including pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). However, the mechanism of action of MFJT on PAH remains unknown. Methods: In this study, a monocrotaline-induced PAH rat model was established and treated with MFJT. The therapeutic effects of MFJT on PAH rat model were evaluated. Network pharmacology was conducted to screen the possible targets for MFJT on PAH, and the molecular docking between the main active components and the core targets was carried out. The key targets identified from network pharmacology were tested. Results: Results showed significant therapeutic effects of MFJT on PAH rat model. Analysis of network pharmacology revealed several potential targets related to apoptosis, inflammation, oxidative stress, and vascular remodeling. Molecular docking showed that the key components were well docked with the core targets. Further experimental validation results that MFJT treatment induced apoptosis (downregulated Bcl-2 levels and upregulated Bax levels in lung tissue), inhibited inflammatory response and oxdative stress (decreased the levels of IL-1β, TNF-α, inducible NOS, and malondialdehyde, and increased the levels of endothelial nitric oxide synthase, nitric oxide, glutathione and superoxide dismutase), reduced the proliferation of pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cells (downregulated ET-1 and β-catenin levels and ERK1/2 phosphorylation, increased GSK3β levels). Conclusion: Our study revealed MFJT treatment could alleviate PAH in rats via induction of apoptosis, inhibition of inflammation and oxidative stress, and the prevention of vascular remodeling. Abstract Background This study examined the feasibility of transabdominal intestinal ultrasonography in evaluating acute gastrointestinal injury (AGI). Methods A total of 116 patients were included. Intestinal ultrasonography was conducted daily within 1 week after admission to the intensive care unit. Ultrasonography indicators including intestinal diameter, changes in the intestinal folds, thickness of the intestinal wall, stratification of the intestinal wall, and intestinal peristalsis (movement of the intestinal contents) were observed to determine the acute gastrointestinal injury ultrasonography (AGIUS) score. The gastrointestinal and urinary tract sonography ultrasound (GUTS) protocol score was also calculated. During the first week of the study, the gastrointestinal failure (GIF) score was determined daily. The correlations between transabdominal intestinal scores (AGIUS and GUTS) and the GIF score were analyzed to clarify the feasibility of evaluating AGI through observation of the intestine. The utility of intestinal ultrasonography indicators in predicting feeding intolerance was investigated to improve the ability of clinicians to manage AGI. Fermented broth has a long history of applications in the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. Recently, the use of fermented broth in skin care products is in ascendance. This review investigates the efficacy of fermented broth in inhibiting tyrosinase and melanogenesis. Possible active ingredients and hypopigmentation mechanisms of fermented broth are discussed, and potential applications of fermented broth in the cosmetic industry are also addressed.

Towards the end of 2019, a novel coronavirus pneumonia (coronavirus disease 19, COVID-19) caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection emerged in Wuhan. The SARS-CoV-2 virus quickly spread across the globe, seriously affecting public health and economic development of countries worldwide. Currently, antiviral drugs developed for COVID-19 lack strong clinical trial support and the high mutation rate of the virus causes difficulties in vaccine development, thus a complex and delayed large scale role out of an efficacious vaccine. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been used for treating various conditions for thousands of years and has a unique systems theory. It can be individualized into specific therapeutic regimens according to the patients' physical condition, clinical symptoms, and other distinguishing factors. In addition, TCM often has different effects at different disease stages, thus contributing to disease prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation. Existing evidence shows that TCM has efficacy in the treatment of COVID-19. The active ingredients of TCM have various pharmacological properties, including antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory activity, with clinical trials showing that these prescriptions reduce symptoms of COVID-19, promote viral clearance, and ultimately improve survival in infected patients. This article discusses the advantages and mechanisms of TCM in the treatment of COVID-19, hoping to provide a reference platform in the fight against the disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The use of adhesively bonded joints in place of traditional joining techniques such as bolted or rivet joints is becoming greatly popular in recent years. Interfacial stress in the adhesive is critical to the strength of adhesively bonded joints. It is necessary to predict the interfacial stresses accurately to ensure the safety of joints. In this work, an analytical model is explicitly presented to evaluate the stresses in a double lap joint. The equilibrium equations in the adhesive overlap region are derived on the basis of elasticity theory. The governing equations are presented in terms of shear and peel stresses in the adhesive. Analytical solutions are derived for the shear and peel stresses, which are considered to be the main reason for the failure of the double lap joint. To verify the analytical solutions, the finite element method is conducted using the commercial package ANSYS. Results from the analytical solution agree well with finite element results and numerical investigations available in the literature. The effect of the adhesive thickness, shear modulus, adherend Young’s modulus and bonding length on the shear and peel stresses in the adhesive of the double lap joint are studied. Numerical results demonstrate that both the maximum shear and peel stress occur at both ends of the bonding region. The maximum values of the shear and peel stresses increase as the adhesive thickness decreases and as the adhesive shear modulus increases provided that the adhesive thickness is sufficiently small. The simplicity and capability to obtain analytical expressions of the shear and peel stresses for double lap adhesive bonded joints makes the proposed analytical model applicable for the stress analysis and preliminary structural design.

This study was aimed at investigating the antioxidant, whitening, and moisture-retention properties of Lactobacillus rhamnosus spent culture supernatant (Lr-SCS) in cosmetic applications. Results reveal that Lr-SCS effectively and gradually scavenges 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl as well as 2,2-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical cations, and increases reducing power in a dose-dependent manner. Additionally, Lr-SCS can also suppress tyrosinase activity in vitro and effectively promote moisture retention. Heat treatment at 100 °C for 30 min does not influence the functions of Lr-SCS. We conclude that Lr-SCS can be used effectively in skin care cosmetics.

This study investigated the polyphenol content, antioxidant activity, and inhibition ability of mushroom tyrosinase and melanogenesis of Dendrobium tosaense (DT) extract. Ground DT was extracted using deionized water (W) or 50% ethanol (50E) at room temperature (RT) or 50 °C (50T) for 20 min. The 50T + 50E extract exhibited the highest total phenol content 47.0 ± 4.0 mg gallic acid equivalent/g DT extract, the highest level of 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) free-radical scavenging 66.0 ± 3.0 mg Trolox equivalent/g DT extract, and the highest reducing power 12.00 ± 0.50 mg vitamin C equivalent/g DT extract. The RT + W extract had the highest total flavonoid content 110.0 ± 3.0 mg quercetin equivalent/g DT extract. The RT + 50E extract had the lowest half maximal inhibitory concentration 1.30 ± 0.00 mg/mL for 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free-radical scavenging, and the lowest half maximal inhibitory concentration 6.40 ± 0.30 mg/mL for mushroom tyrosinase inhibition activity. DT extracts, especially RT + W and 50T + W, exhibited potent inhibitory effects on melanogenesis of B16/F10 cells. These results demonstrated the application potential of DT extract for skincare.

Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) have attracted a lot of attention during the last decade. VANETs can not only improve driving safety, but also convenience, and support most future Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). Due to the highly dynamic network topology of VANETs, many geographic routing protocols have been proposed and use real-time traffic information as an important metric to select a reliable forwarding path. However, most of the existing works do not describe how to gather real-time traffic. They either assume this information is already available, or can query an existing traffic center. Few studies have noticed this issue but the proposed solutions only consider a small region. In this paper, we propose a Comprehensive Real-Time Traffic Map (CRT Map) to collect wide-ranging real-time traffic information with low overhead. In the design of a CRT Map, the concept of Crowdsensing is adopted. Vehicles cooperatively gather traffic information and share it with each other to construct an overview of the whole road network traffic. In addition, we design a CRT Map Based Routing (CBR), which takes into account the connectivity of consecutive roads in routing decisions. Simulation results show that the CBR can achieve a lower end-to-end delay and a higher packet delivery ratio.

Oxidative stress, including Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation-induced skin damage, is involved in numerous diseases. This study demonstrates that water extract of Eclipta prostrata L. (WEP) has a potent effect in scavenging 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), superoxide radicals, and chelating ferrous ion, exhibiting IC50 values of 0.23 mg/mL, 0.48 mg/mL, and 1.25 mg/mL, respectively. The WEP total phenol content was 176.45 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g sample. Chlorogenic acid, a component of the plant's active ingredients, was determined by HPLC and antioxidative assay. However, no caffeic acid, stigmasterol, or wedelolactone was present in WEP. WEP absorbs both UVA and UVB irradiation, and furthermore, the extract shows a dose-dependent response in the protection of HaCaT human keratinocytes and mouse fibroblasts 3T3 cells against UVB-induced cytotoxicity, which may result from a synergistic effect between chlorogenic acid and other active components present in WEP.

We investigated the kinetics of 4N-acetyl-pentapeptides, Ac-P1, Ac-P2, Ac-P3, and Ac-P4, regarding inhibition of mushroom tyrosinase activity. The peptides sequences of Ac-P1, Ac-P2, Ac-P3, and Ac-P4 were Ac-RSRFK, Ac-KSRFR, Ac-KSSFR, and Ac-RSRFS, respectively. The 4N-acetyl-pentapeptides were able to reduce the oxidation of L-DOPA by tyrosinase in a dose-dependent manner. Of the 4N-acetyl-pentapeptides, only Ac-P4 exhibited lag time (80 s) at a concentration of 0.5 mg/mL. The tyrosinase inhibitory effects of Ac-P4 (IC50 0.29 mg/mL) were more effective than those of Ac-P1, Ac-P2, and Ac-P3, in which IC50s were 0.75 mg/mL, 0.78 mg/mL, and 0.81 mg/mL, respectively. Kinetic analysis demonstrated that all 4N-acetyl-pentapeptides were mixed-type tyrosinase inhibitors. Furthermore, 0.1 mg/mL of Ac-P4 exhibited significant melanogenesis inhibition on B16F10 melanoma cells and was more effective than kojic acid. The melanogenesis inhibition of Ac-P4 was dose-dependent and did not induce any cytotoxicity on B16F10 melanoma cells.

This is the first study to investigate the biological activities of fermented extracts of Rhodiola rosea L. (Crassulaceae) and Lonicera japonica Thunb. (Caprifoliaceae). Alcaligenes piechaudii CC-ESB2 fermented and ethanol extracts of Rhodiola rosea and Lonicera japonica were prepared and the antioxidative activities of different concentrations of samples were evaluated using in vitro antioxidative assays. Tyrosinase inhibition was determined by using the dopachrome method with L-DOPA as substrate. The results demonstrated that inhibitory effects (ED50 values) on mushroom tyrosinase of fermented Rhodiola rosea, fermented Lonicera japonica, ethanol extract of Lonicera japonica, and ethanol extract of Rhodiola rosea were 0.78, 4.07, 6.93, and >10 mg/ml, respectively. The DPPH scavenging effects of fermented Rhodiola rosea (ED50 = 0.073 mg/ml) and fermented Lonicera japonica (ED50 = 0.207 mg/ml) were stronger than effects of their respective ethanol extracts. Furthermore, the scavenging effect increases with the presence of high content of total phenol. However, the superoxide scavenging effects of fermented Rhodiola rosea was less than effects of fermented Lonicera japonica. The results indicated that fermentation of Rhodiola rosea and Lonicera japonica can be considered as an effective biochemical process for application in food, drug, and cosmetics.
