This research sought to examine how the physicochemical characteristics of soy globulins and different processing techniques influence the gel properties of soy yogurt. The goal was to improve these gel properties and rectify any texture issues in soy yogurt, ultimately aiming to produce premium-quality plant-based soy yogurt. In this research study, the investigation focused on examining the impact of 7S/11S, homogenization pressure, and glycation modified with glucose on the gel properties of soy yogurt. A plant-based soy yogurt with superior gel and texture properties was successfully developed using a 7S/11S globulin-glucose conjugate at a 1:3 ratio and a homogenization pressure of 110 MPa. Compared to soy yogurt supplemented with pectin or gelatin, this yogurt demonstrated enhanced characteristics. Objective: To investigate the quality and efficacy of remote at-home rehabilitation for patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) using personalized smart voice-based electronic prescription, and further explore the standardized health management mode of remote family cardiac rehabilitation. Trial design: A multicenter, randomized (1:1), non-blind, parallel controlled study., Methods: A total of 171 patients with CVD who were admitted to 18 medical institutions in China from April 2021 to October 2022 were randomly divided into a treatment group (86 cases) and a control group (85 cases) in a non-blinded experiment, based on the sequence of enrollment. The control group received routine at-home rehabilitation training, and the treatment group received remote feedback-based at-home cardiac rehabilitation management based on routine at-home rehabilitation training. The primary outcome was the difference in VO 2 peak (mL/min/kg) after 12 weeks. A linear mixed model was developed with follow-up as the dependent variable. Age and baseline data were utilized as covariates, whereas hospital and patient characteristics were adjusted as random-effect variables. As the linear mixed model can accommodate missing data under the assumption of random missing data, there was no substitute missing value for quantitative data., Results: A total of 171 participants, with 86 in the experimental group and 85 in the control group, were included in the main analysis. The analysis, which used linear mixing model, revealed significant differences in cardiopulmonary function indexes (VO 2 /kg peak, VO 2 peak, AT, METs, and maximum resistance) at different follow-up time (0, 4, and 12 weeks) in the experimental group ( p  < 0.05). In the control group, there was no significant difference in cardiopulmonary values at different follow-up time (0, 4, and 12 weeks; p  > 0.05). VO 2 /kg peak (LS mean 1.49, 95%CI 0.09-2.89, p  = 0.037) and other indicators of cardiopulmonary function ( p  < 0.05) were significantly different between the experimental group and the control group at week 12. The results were comparable in the complete case analysis., Conclusion: The remote home cardiac rehabilitation management mode using personalized smart voice-based electronic prescription provides several benefits to patients, including improvements in muscle strength, endurance, cardiopulmonary function, and aerobic metabolism. Several clinical trials observed that enzastaurin prolonged QT interval in cancer patients. However, the mechanism of enzastaurin-induced QT interval prolongation is unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the effect and mechanism of enzastaurin on QT interval and cardiac function. The Langendorff and Ion-Optix MyoCam systems were used to assess the effects of enzastaurin on QT interval, cardiac systolic function and intracellular Ca 2+ transient in guinea pig hearts and ventricular myocytes. The effects of enzastaurin on the rapid delayed rectifier (I Kr ), the slow delayed rectifier K + current (I Ks ), transient outward potassium current (I to ), action potentials, Ryanodine Receptor 2 (RyR2) and the sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum Ca 2+ ATPase 2a (SERCA2a) expression and activity in HEK 293 cell system and primary cardiomyocytes were investigated using whole-cell recording technique and western blotting. We found that enzastaurin significantly prolonged QT interval in guinea pig hearts and increased the action potential duration (APD) in guinea pig cardiomyocytes in a dose-dependent manner. Enzastaurin potently inhibited I Kr by binding to the human Ether-à-go-go-Related gene (hERG) channel in both open and closed states, and hERG mutant channels, including S636A, S631A, and F656V attenuated the inhibitory effect of enzastaurin. Enzastaurin also moderately decreased I Ks . Additionally, enzastaurin also induced negative chronotropic action. Moreover, enzastaurin impaired cardiac systolic function and reduced intracellular Ca 2+ transient via inhibition of RyR2 phosphorylation. Taken together, we found that enzastaurin prolongs QT, reduces heart rate and impairs cardiac systolic function. Background: Faba bean ( Vicia faba L) is one of the most important legumes in the world. However, there is relatively little genomic information available for this species owing to its large genome. The lack of data impedes the discovery of molecular markers and subsequent genetic research in faba bean. The objective of this study was to analyze the faba bean transcriptome, and to develop simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers to determine the genetic diversity of 226 faba bean varieties derived from different regions in China., Methods: Faba bean varieties with different phenotype were used in transcriptome analysis. The functions of the unigenes were analyzed using various database. SSR markers were developed and the polymorphic markers were selected to conduct genetic diversity analysis., Results: A total of 92.43 Gb of sequencing data was obtained in this study, and 133,487 unigene sequences with a total length of 178,152,541 bp were assembled. A total of 5,200 SSR markers were developed on the basis of RNA-Seq analysis. Then, 200 SSR markers were used to evaluate polymorphisms. In total, 103 (51.5%) SSR markers showed significant and repeatable bands between different faba bean varieties. Clustering analysis revealed that 226 faba bean materials were divided into five groups. Genetic diversity analysis revealed that the relationship between different faba beans in China was related, especially in the same region. During the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) epidemic, there have been concerns about the impact of vaccines on people's fertility, including the fertility of those who are currently preparing for pregnancy and those who might become pregnant in future. However, there is still a lack of research on the effect of the COVID-19 vaccine on male fertility, and it is not surprising that couples and donors have concerns regarding vaccination. In this study, a retrospective cohort study was conducted to examine semen quality before and after receipt of the inactivated COVID-19 vaccine. There were no statistically significant changes in semen parameters (volume, sperm concentration, progressive motility, and total progressive motile count) after two doses of vaccine (all P > 0.05). In summary, our study updates the most recent studies on the effects of the COVID-19 vaccine on male fertility, and the information from this study could be used to guide fertility recommendations for assisted reproductive technology (ART) patients and donors., Competing Interests: None

Grain filling affects grain weight and quality and is among the most critical factors in determining the yield and quality of cereal crops. Though hybrids have larger panicles and numerous spikelets with a larger sink capacity than conventional varieties, data on the grain filling commonalities and differences between foxtail millet varieties with different panicle types remain sparse. In this study, we found that "Zhang Gu 13" (ZG, large panicle) exhibits a significantly higher panicle weight than "Yu Gu 18" (YG, conventional panicle) at the early stage of grain filling, but the weight of YG increased rapidly and gradually overtook ZG during the middle stages. A temporal expression pattern analysis demonstrated that the genes involved in photosynthesis, metabolic pathways, and phenylpropanoid biosynthesis were downregulated, while those related to peroxisome function, purine metabolism, and zeatin biosynthesis were upregulated during grain filling in both varieties. A total of 6,832 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified in both varieties, with the majority identified at the early and late stages. A Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis further revealed that the upregulated DEGs in YG were associated with gibberellin (GA) biosynthesis, ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters, and plant hormone signal transduction. Photosynthesis-related DEGs, such as photosystem and antenna proteins, were significantly upregulated in ZG. Background: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is an important health threat in China to which direct acting antivirals (DAAs) are very effective. In 2019, another novel DAA glecaprevir/pibrentasvir (GLE/PIB) was officially approved. Knowledge of its cost-effectiveness would be informative for clinical decision-making but has not been evaluated. This study aims to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of GLE/PIB to inform policy-making on drug reimbursement and HCV eradication., Methods: Markov models were developed from the payers' perspective and simulated the lifetime experience of adult patients chronically infected with HCV genotype 1 or genotype 2. Two regimens, GLE/PIB and pegylated interferon (pegIFN) plus ribavirin (RBV), were compared in cost and quality adjusted life years (QALY) with both outcomes being discounted to 2020 values. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) was computed to reflect the incremental benefit of GLE/PIB versus pegIFN + RBV. The robustness of the model outcomes was examined using deterministic and probabilistic sensitivity analysis (PSA) to identify influential parameters and to assess the probability of GLE/PIB being cost-effective. The GDP per capita in China in 2019 ($10,275) was used as the threshold for cost-effectiveness., Results: For the entire target population, GLE/PIB was the dominant regimen attaining a cost-saving of $255 and 1.17 more QALYs relative to pegIFN + RBV. The finding was more pronounced for HCV genotype 1 infection by saving $1,656 and creating 1.37 more QALYs. At the $10,275 threshold, the probability of GLE/PIB being cost-effective was 99.32% overall and 99.85% for HCV genotype 1 infection. The age of starting DAA treatment, price of pegIFN + RBV, cost of cirrhosis treatment and duration of the GLE/PIB regimen were the five most influential factors. For the patients with HCV genotype 2 infection, the ICER of GLE/PIB was $12,914/QALY with 95% confidence interval of $4,047/QALY to $37,640/QALY. The GLE/PIB regimen statistically cannot be ruled out as a cost-effective option for HCV genotype 2 infection., Conclusions: GLE/PIB is a cost-effective strategy to treat chronic HCV genotype 1 and HCV genotype 2 infection in China. This regimen should be initiated at a younger age to maximize its value. To achieve national eradication, it may be timely to consider replacing pegIFN + RBV with DAAs, such as GLE/PIB, as the first-line treatment.

Aims: The effect of increasing dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) on rumen fermentation and ruminal microbial community in dairy cows under heat stress (HS) conditions were evaluated., Methods and Results: This study was performed as a two-period cross-over design during the summer season, with eight lactating dairy cows randomly distributed to either a control DCAD diet (CON: 33·5 mEq/100 g DM) or high DCAD diet (HDCAD: 50·8 mEq/100 g DM). Throughout the present study, the temperature and humidity index (THI; 80·2 ± 4·29) was generally elevated above the threshold (THI = 72) that is reported to cause HS in lactating dairy cows. Rumen liquid samples were collected on 15 and 21 d during each 21 d-period. The absolute concentration of ruminal total volatile fatty acid (TVFA) in HDCAD treatment was significantly (P < 0·05) higher than those in the control, whilst the ruminal pH, NH 3 -N, and VFA molar percentages were unaffected through increasing DCAD. Furthermore, the copy numbers of the cellulolytic bacteria Ruminococcus albus and Ruminococcus flavefaciens in rumen fluid significantly (P < 0·05) rose along with the increment of DCAD. Although the Alpha diversity indexes and the bacterial microbiota structure were unaffected, increasing DCAD significantly (P < 0·05) enriched the phylum Fibrobacteres and genus Fibrobacter in the microflora of rumen fluid, whilst the genera Flexilinea and Dubosiella were the most differentially abundant taxa in the control., Conclusions: Increasing DCAD under HS conditions resulted in a greater concentration of total VFA without affecting rumen bacteria diversity or structure, although the enrichment of some cellulolytic/hemicellulolytic bacteria was observed., Significance and Impact of the Study: The present study provides information on the modulation of rumen fermentation and microbial community through the increment of DCAD in Holstein dairy cows under HS conditions., (© 2020 The Society for Applied Microbiology.)

Gout is a common inflammatory arthritis associated with various comorbidities, such as cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome. Xanthine oxidase inhibitors (XOIs) have emerged as effective substances to control gout. Much attention has been given to the search for natural XOIs. In this study, a molecular database of natural XOIs was created for modeling purposes. Quantitative structure-activity relationship models were developed by combining various machine learning approaches and three descriptor pools. The models revealed several features of XOIs, including hydrophobicity and steric molecular structures. Experimental results showed the xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitory activity of predicted compounds. Vanillic acid was identified as a promising new XOI candidate, with an IC50 of 0.593 μg mL-1. The functions of hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions in XO activity inhibition were confirmed by molecular docking. This study fills knowledge gaps pertaining to the discovery of natural XOIs and to the interaction mechanisms between XOIs and XO.

Waterlogging, an abiotic stress, severely restricts crop yield in various parts of the world. Thus, we conducted a meta-analysis of 2,419 comparisons from 115 studies to comprehensively evaluate the overall change in crop yield induced by waterlogging in the global region. The results suggested that waterlogging obviously decreased crop yield by 32.9% on average, compared with no waterlogging, which was a result of a reduced 1,000-grain weight (13.67%), biomass (28.89%), plant height (10.68%), net photosynthetic rate ( P n , 39.04%), and leaf area index (LAI, 22.89%). The overall effect of a waterlogging regime on crop yield is related to the crop type; the crop yield reduction varied between wheat (25.53%) and cotton (59.95%), with an overall average value of 36.81% under field conditions. In addition, we also found that compared with no waterlogging, waterlogging in the reproductive growth stage (41.90%) caused a greater yield reduction than in the vegetative growth stage (34.75%). Furthermore, decreases in crop yield were observed with an extension in the waterlogging duration; the greatest decreases in crop yield occurred at 15 < D ≤ 28 (53.19 and 55.96%) under field and potted conditions, respectively. Background and Purpose: A recently proposed pre-dementia syndrome, motoric cognitive risk (MCR) syndrome, is characterized by cognitive complaints and slow gait, and increases the risk of dementia and mortality. The aim of the present study was to explore the prevalence of and factors associated with MCR syndrome in elderly community-dwelling Chinese subjects., Methods: The Ningbo Community Study on Aging recruited 953 Chinese community-dwelling participants aged ≥ 65 years from November 2016 to March 2017. Handgrip, Five-Times-Sit-to-Stand (FTSS) test time and body composition, as well as comprehensive geriatric evaluation, were measured as potentially independent factors associated with MCR syndrome., Results: The prevalence of MCR syndrome was 12.8% in men and 12.6% in women, and high prevalence of MCR syndrome was not associated with age or sex. Multiple logistic regression analysis by sex showed that a 1-SD increase in FTSS test time in males and females was associated with 45% (95% confidence intervals, 19-76; P < 0.01) and 20% (95% confidence intervals, 9-33; P < 0.01) higher risk of having MCR syndrome, respectively, whereas handgrip strength was inversely correlated with MCR syndrome in males [odds ratio (OR), 0.91; P = 0.02] but not females (P = 0.06). Moreover, the relationship of arm fat mass and MCR syndrome was statistically significant in both sexes (OR, 1.69-1.77), but leg fat mass was only associated with MCR syndrome (OR, 1.56; P = 0.02) in men., Conclusions: Handgrip, FTSS test time and body composition were associated in a sex-specific manner with MCR syndrome in elderly community-dwelling Chinese subjects. Flavonoids are important active ingredients of traditional Chinese medicine, mainly with cardiovascular, anti-liver injury, antioxidant, antispasmodic, and estrogen-like effects. These compounds have obvious effects on the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Macrophage-derived foam cells are the key medium in the process of atherosclerosis(AS). In plaque, allserum lipids, serum lipoproteins, and various pro-or anti-inflammatory stimulating factors, chemokines, and small bioactive molecules can significantly affect the macrophage phenotype and induce stronger pro-inflammatory or anti-inflammatory properties. Studies have shown that some flavonoids can be used for macrophages through different pathways and mechanisms, playing an anti-atherosclerosis effect to different degrees, including promotion of cholesterol efflux from macrophages, anti-foaming of macrophages, inhibition of secretion of inflammatory factors, and antioxidant modified low density lipoprotein(ox-LDL)-induced apoptosis of macrophages. Related gene regulation inclu-ded ATP-binding cassette transporter A1(ABCA1), ATP-binding cassette transporter G1(ABCG1), Toll-like receptor(TLR), and scavenger receptor(SR). In this article, we would review the recent research progress of flavonoids on anti-atherosclerosis effect me-diated by macrophage. It is expected to provide new treatment strategies for AS-related cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, and provide research ideas and development directions for the use of related natural medicines and design of new products.

Respiration chambers share one analyzer working in parallel, and methane (CH 4 ) concentrations have to be measured at certain intervals. The maximum and minimum values in the kinetics of CH 4 emissions can be missed during the interval between measurements, which may influence the quantification of CH 4 emissions. Chambers must be opened for morning feeding and cleaning, which causes a loss of CH 4 data. Calculation methods are needed to estimate the lost CH 4 emission data, which may influence the estimated amount of daily CH 4 emissions. In this study, we measured the CH 4 emissions of 10 growing Chinese Holstein dairy heifers in respiration chambers. Methane concentrations were measured every 0.5 min to obtain the 23-h kinetics of CH 4 emissions, which were further selected at different intervals between measurements (i.e., 5, 30, 60, 120, 180, and 240 min) to evaluate the effects of interval on quantification of CH 4 emissions. The missing 1-h kinetics of CH 4 emissions before feeding were not measured, and 2 calculation methods were used to estimate the missing 1-h kinetics of CH 4 emissions: mean value of measuring period (the mean method) and the nearest value of measurement just before chamber opening (the nearest method). The results showed that the rates of CH 4 emission from 10 heifers varied from 4.56 to 11.42 g/h. The increment of intervals decreased maximum rate of CH 4 emission and increased minimum rate of CH 4 emission. Interval caused less than 5% of the difference in measuring CH 4 emissions. Although the mean method had greater estimated daily CH 4 emission than the nearest method, the difference was within 3%. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy, safety and remission rates of pruritus of bezafibrate and UDCA combination therapy in the treatment of refractory PBC. Methods: PubMed, Embase, The Cochrane Library databases, Science direct, Web of Science, CBM, WangFang Data, CNKI, VIP databases were searched to collect randomized controlled trials, crossover trials and self-control clinical trials of combination therapy of UDCA and bezafibrate with UDCA monotherapy for PBC up to June, 2018. RevMan 5.3 software was used for meta-analysis. Two evaluators independently screened the literature, extracted the data, and evaluated the risk of bias of relevant study. Results: Eleven studies, including 465 patients were included. Ursodeoxycholic acid combined with bezafibrate had greatly improved liver biochemical indicators ( P < 0.01) and pruritus scores in patients with refractory primary biliary cholangitis ( MD = -2.97, 95% CI : -4.34~ -1.60, P < 0.01). However, there was no statistically significant differences in adverse events ( RR = 1.28, 95% CI : 0.96 to 1.70, P = 0.09), and mortality rate ( RR = 2.58, 95% CI : 0.57 to 11.73, P = 0.22) between the two groups. Conclusion: Ursodeoxycholic acid combined with bezafibrate may improve the biochemical response and pruritus score of refractory PBC, but has no significant effect on adverse events and mortality rate.

Background: Several previous researches had found artery stiffness associated skeletal muscle mass, but not considering muscle strength and physical performance, which also were compositions of sarcopenia. This study aims to reveal the relationship of artery stiffness and sarcopenia using the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia criteria., Methods: Study was performed on 1002 Chinese community dwelling participants aged ≥65 years from November 2016 to March 2017. Body composition, muscle strength, physical performance, and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) considering as artery stiffness index were measured., Results: In multiple regression analysis, baPWV was associated with handgrip (β=-0.13, P=0.04) and Relative skeletal muscle mass index (ASM/Ht2) (β=-0.02, P<0.01), but not with 4-meter velocity (P=0.21). Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that 1-SD (3.50m/s) increased in baPWV was still associated with a 11% (CI, 4%-20%; P<0.01) higher odds of being sarcopenia. In the gender subgroup analysis, the relationship of baPWV and sarcopenia remain significant in men (OR, 1.23; 95% CI, 1.07-1.42, P<0.01), but not in women (P=0.07)., Conclusions: High brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity is associated with sarcopenia in Chinese community-dwelling elderly, with gender differences., Competing Interests: None of the authors declares a conflict of interest

Based on the ecological environment features of Loess Plateau, we examined field microclimate characteristics and yield of four different intercropping patterns for proso millet (P) and mung bean (M) including 2:2, 4:2, 4:4, 2:4. The results showed that, compared with monoculture, intercropping increased plant height, leaf area index (LAI) and chlorophyll content (SPAD) of proso millet in its late growth stage, while LAI and SPAD of mung bean decreased due to the shade of the high proso millet. Mung bean appeared spindly growth for a while by increasing the plant height. Moreover, upper canopy illumination and air temperature during grain filling stage of proso millet decreased under intercropping conditions, but relative humidity substantially increased. These changes regulated soil temperature and light leakage, which decreased under intercropping systems, and thereby led to a cold and wet ecological environment. Poor atmospheric and light conditions formed a relative closure growth environment for mung bean, which suppressed its growth. The panicles, spike length, grain mass per plant and 1000-grain mass of proso millet under 2P2M, 4P2M, 4P4M and 2P4M treatments was significantly increased by 7.5%-45.0%, 2.2%-12.2%, 35.4%-94.0% and 2.3%-4.7%, respectively. This caused a 5.6%-20.7% increase of yield than the mono-culture. The branch number, pods per plant, grain mass per plant and 100-grain mass in mung bean were decreased under different intercropping treatments, and the yield was significantly reduced by 34.8%. Land equivalent ratios (LER) of each intercropping pattern were all greater than 1. Among them, LER of 2P4M was the maximum (1.86), and 2P4M treatment held relatively reasonable composite configuration. Our results suggested that 2:4 ratio of proso millet/mung bean intercropping patterns performed better than other ratios on the Loess Plateau.

A series of investigations have been performed regarding microRNA (miRNA, miR) of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients. However, most of these used microarray with neither validation by PCR nor any follow-up on the biological mechanism implicated by findings. Further, there were rarely any analyses linking clinical phenotype of de novo, drug-naive patients to cellular pathogenic mechanism(s) to date. Microarray screening followed by validation via quantitative PCR (Q-PCR) assays and the relationship between miRNAs and phenotypic indices were evaluated. Additionally, the cellular mechanism of miRNAs through effects of β-site amyloid precursor protein (APP) cleaving enzyme (BACE1) was assessed. We identified 2 specific differentially expressed (DE) miRNAs (miR-339 and miR-425) as potential diagnostic biomarkers for AD and revealed that these DE miRNAs could be involved in modulating the pathogenesis of AD via BACE1 protein inhibition. The findings presented here reveal a detailed snapshot of the profile of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) miRNA changes in AD patients, association with clinical phenotype, and potential roles in cellular pathogenesis.

C-repeat-binding factor (CBF)/dehydration-responsive element (DREB) transcription factors play key roles in plant stress responses. However, little information is available on the regulation of CBF/DREB expression. In this study, we isolated and characterized the FeDREB1 promoter sequence from the common buckwheat accession Xinong 9976. To identify the upstream region of the FeDREB1 gene required for promoter activity, we constructed a series of FeDREB1 promoter deletion derivatives. Each deletion construct was analyzed through Agrobacterium-mediated transient transformation in tobacco leaves treated with 4°C cold or drought stress. Promoter-beta-glucuronidase fusion assays revealed that the pCD1 (-270 bp) deletion in the upstream region of FeDREB1 could activate expression of the GUS gene at 4°C. The pCD1 (-270 bp), pCD2 (-530 bp), and pCD3 (-904 bp) deletion induced low-level GUS expression under drought stress. However, the pCD4 (-1278 bp) deletion clearly activated GUS gene expression. Our results suggest that sections pCD1 (-270 bp) and pCD4 (-1278 bp) in the FeDREB1 gene promoter are new sources of induced promoters for adversity-resistance breeding in plant genetic engineering.

A field experiment with two broomcorn millet varieties Longmi 8 (strong drought-resistant variety) and Jinmi 4 (drought-sensitive variety) was conducted to compare their differences in growth, field microclimate and photosynthetic capacity from anthesis to maturity under different fertility conditions. The results showed that, fertilization decreased canopy temperature, air temperature, soil temperature, illumination, but improved the relative humidity among broomcorn millet plants compared with the non-fertilization treatment. With an increase of the fertilizer level, the plant height, SPAD, LAI, net photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance, intercellular CO2 concentration in broomcorn millet showed an increasing trend, which of the high fertilization treatment were 9.2%, 15.1%, 56.6%, 17.8%, 24.6%, 14.2%, 29.7% higher than those of non-fertilization treatment, respectively. Compared with Jinmi 4, Longmi 8 showed a cold wet characteristic, with lower canopy temperature, air temperature, soil temperature; illumination, and higher plant height, LAI, SPAD and relative humidity during grain filling. Moreover, each photosynthetic index of Longmi 8 slowly decreased and extended the period of leaf photosynthetic function so as to accumulate more photosynthetic products.

The objective of this study was to explore the effects of mulching patterns on soil water, growth, photosynthetic characteristics, grain yield and water use efficiency (WUE) of broomcorn millet in the dryland of Loess Plateau in China. In a three-year field experiment from 2011 to 2013, we compared four different mulching patterns with traditional plat planting (no mulching) as the control (CK). The mulching patterns included W ridge covered with common plastic film + intredune covered with straw (SG), common ridge covered with common plastic film + intredune covered with straw (LM), double ridges covered with common plastic film + intredune covered with straw (QM), and the traditional plat planting covered with straw (JG). The results showed that the soil water storage in 0-100 cm layer was significantly higher in all mulching patterns than in CK, particularly in SG then followed by LM, QM and JG, and the differences among the mulching patterns reached a significant level at the different growth stages of broomcorn millet. Among all mulching patterns, SG had the greatest effect on the growth and photosynthesis of broomcorn millet, respectively increasing the yield and WUE by 55.9% and 64.9% over CK, and the differences among the mulching patterns also reached a significant level. Therefore, SG was recommended as an efficient planting pattern for broomcorn millet production in the dryland of Loess Plateau in China.

To explore the border effect and physiological characteristic of broomcorn millet growing under different film mulching on ridge-furrow for harvesting rainwater models in the semi-arid region of Northern Shaanxi, China, a three-year field experiment was conducted with four different widths of ridge and furrow, and the bare land flat sowing as the control (NM). The width of ridge and furrow varied as ridge: furrow = 40 cm: 40 cm (P40), 60 cm: 60 cm (P60), 80 cm: 80 cm (P80), and 100 cm:100 cm (P100). The results showed that the wider the width of furrow and ridge was, the stronger the border advantage and the border effect index of the yield were. With the increase in width of furrow and ridge, the yield increasing effect of side rows increased with the maximum of 207.7%, and the yield increasing effect of middle rows decreased with the minimum of 10.3%. P60 reached the highest yield within three years. The yield contribution rate of side rows was higher than that of middle rows (P < 0.05). The chlorophyll contents, Ch1 a/Ch1 b, and photosynthetic rate of side rows were higher than those of middle rows among the different harvesting rainwater models. The wider the width of furrow and ridge was, the stronger the photosynthetic capacity of side rows was, and the weaker the photosynthetic capacity of middle rows was. The optimal type of ridge and furrow was P60 in the semi-arid region of Northern Shaanxi.

Objective: To study on the dispersion of daidzein with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and its effects on the aqueous solubility, dissolution rate and bioavailability of daidzein., Methods: The solid dispersion of daidzein at various daidzein to PVP ratios were obtained via the solvent evaporation method and characterized by differential scanning calorimetry and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. In addition,the bioavailability of free daidzein as well as its solid dispersion were studied in mice., Results: It was found that the daidzein solubility in the solid dispersion form was 8 times greater than that of the free drug in water at (37 +/- 0.1) degrees C. Meanwhile,the daidzein dissolution rate was significantly increased after dispersing with PVP. The results of the bioavailability showed that both Cmax and AUC value of daidzein solid dispersion were about 5 times larger than unprocessed daidzein, implying that the rate-limiting step in daidzein absorption may be the dissolution process., Conclusions: The results in this work reveal the substantial advantages of adopting polyvinylpyrrolidone dispersion as an oral preparation to improve daidzein bioavailability.

Prodigiosin is a bacterial metabolite with potent anticancer activity, which is attributed to its proapoptotic effect selectively active in malignant cells. Still, the molecular mechanisms whereby prodigiosin induces apoptosis remain largely unknown. In particular, the role of survivin, a vital inhibitor of apoptosis, in prodigiosin-induced apoptosis has never been addressed before and hence was the primary goal of this study. Our results showed that prodigiosin dose-dependently induced down-regulation of survivin in multiple breast carcinoma cell lines, including MCF-7, T-47D and MDA-MB-231. This down-regulation is mainly regulated at the level of transcription, as prodigiosin reduced the levels of both survivin mRNA and survivin promoter activity but failed to rescue survivin expression when proteasome-mediated degradation is abolished. Importantly, overexpression of survivin rendered cells more resistant to prodigiosin, indicating an essential role of survivin down-regulation in prodigiosin-induced apoptosis. In addition, we found that prodigiosin synergistically enhanced cell death induced by paclitaxel, a chemotherapy drug known to up-regulate survivin that in turn confers its own resistance. This paclitaxel sensitization effect of prodigiosin is ascribed to the lowering of survivin expression, because prodigiosin was shown to counteract survivin induction by paclitaxel and, notably, the sensitization effect was severely abrogated in cells that overexpress survivin. Taken together, our results argue that down-regulation of survivin is an integral component mediating prodigiosin-induced apoptosis in human breast cancer cells, and further suggest the potential of prodigiosin to sensitize anticancer drugs, including paclitaxel, in the treatment of breast cancer.

Background: Molecular adsorbents recirculating system (MARS) liver support therapy is the development of albumin dialysis. This study was to assess the successful application of MARS artificial liver support therapy as a bridge to re-transplantation in two cases of long anhepatic duration., Methods: MARS therapy was given after failure plasma-exchange (PE) treatment, which resulted in circulatory derangement and acute renal dysfunction in a 36-year-old male patient. Finally his uncontrolled anhepatic condition led to a successful re-transplantation. In another 48-year-old man who was diagnosed as having primary nonfunction (PNF) during the liver transplantation, 10-hour MARS treatment contributed to smooth bridging of his anhepatic phase., Results: The two anhepatic patients were bridged for 26 and 17 hours respectively to re-transplantation with MARS therapy., Conclusion: Our experience proves that MARS artificial liver can be an effective support for long time bridging PNF until re-transplantation is available.

Objective: To study the influence of Jieyu Huoxue Decoction on rehabilitation of patients with depression after cerebral infarction., Methods: Fifty four patients suffered from the depression after acute cerebral infarction were randomly divided into three groups: depression control group, fluoxetine treated group and Jieyu Huoxue Decoction treated group. Eighteen patients of cerebral infarction without depression were enrolled in the no depression control group randomly. The Zung self-rating depression scale (SDS), the modified Edinburgh-Scandinavia stroke scale (MESSS) and the activities of daily living (ADL) were evaluated before treatment, 30 and 60 days after treatment., Results: After 30 and 60 days of treatment, SDS evaluation of the Jieyu Huoxue Decoction treated group showed significant difference as compared with the condition before treatment and that of the depression control group (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01), MESSS evaluation and ADL evaluation also showed significant difference as compared with the condition before treatment and that of the depression control group (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01); there was no obvious difference between the fluoxetine treated group and the Jieyu Huoxue Decoction treated group, but the Jieyu Huoxue Decoction treated group showed fewer symptoms and less side effect., Conclusion: Jieyu Huoxue Decoction can not only relieve depression after cerebral infarction, but also improve neurological functions.
