Background: Diaphragm atrophy can contribute to dyspnea in patients with heart failure (HF) with its link to central neurohormonal overactivation. HF medications that cross the blood-brain barrier could act centrally and improve respiratory function, potentially alleviating diaphragmatic atrophy. Therefore, we compared the benefit of central- vs peripheral-acting HF drugs on respiratory function, as assessed by a single cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) and outcomes in HF patients. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted of 624 ambulatory adult HF patients (80% male) with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction ≤ 40% and a complete CPET, followed at a single institution between 2001 and 2017. CPET parameters, and the outcomes all-cause death, a composite endpoint (all-cause death, need for left ventricular assist device, heart transplantation), and all-cause and/or HF hospitalizations, were compared in patients receiving central-acting (n = 550) vs peripheral-acting (n = 74) drugs. Results: Compared to patients who receive peripheral-acting drugs, patients who receive central-acting drugs had better respiratory function (peak breath-by breath oxygen uptake [VO2], P = 0.020; forced expiratory volume in 1 second [FEV1], P = 0.007), and ventilatory efficiency (minute ventilation / carbon dioxide production [VE/VCO2], P < 0.001; end-tidal carbon dioxide tension [PETCO2], P = 0.015; and trend for forced vital capacity [FVC], P = 0.056). Many of the associations between the CPET parameters and drug type remained significant after multivariate adjustment. Moreover, patients receiving central-acting drugs had fewer composite events (P = 0.023), and HF hospitalizations (P = 0.044), although significance after multivariant correction was not achieved, despite the hazard ratio being 0.664 and 0.757, respectively. Conclusions: Central-acting drugs were associated with better respiratory function as measured by CPET parameters in HF patients. This could extend to clinically meaningful composite outcomes and hospitalizations but required more power to be definitive in linking to drug effect. Central-acting HF drugs show a role in mitigating diaphragm weakness. Résumé: Contexte: L’atrophie du diaphragme peut contribuer à la dyspnée chez les personnes atteintes d’insuffisance cardiaque (IC), compte tenu de son lien avec la suractivation neuro-hormonale centrale. Or, les médicaments contre l’IC qui franchissent la barrière hématoencéphalique pourraient exercer une action centrale, améliorer la respiration et ainsi éventuellement atténuer l’atrophie du diaphragme. C’est pourquoi nous avons voulu comparer, au moyen d’une seule épreuve d’effort cardiopulmonaire (EECP), les effets bénéfiques exercés par des médicaments à action périphérique et des médicaments à action centrale sur la fonction respiratoire, de même que l’issue des patients atteints d’IC auxquels ils ont été administrés. Méthodologie: Nous avons réalisé une étude rétrospective auprès de 624 adultes ambulatoires atteints d’IC (80 % d’hommes) dont la fraction d’éjection ventriculaire gauche était réduite (≤ 40 %), qui se sont prêtés à une EECP complète et qui ont été suivis dans le même établissement entre 2001 et 2017. Les paramètres de l’EECP et la mortalité toutes causes confondues, un critère d’évaluation composé (décès toutes causes confondues, nécessité de recourir à un dispositif d’assistance ventriculaire gauche, transplantation cardiaque), et les hospitalisations toutes causes confondues et/ou liées à l’IC ont été comparés entre les patients qui recevaient des médicaments à action centrale (n = 550) et ceux qui recevaient des médicaments à action périphérique (n = 74). Résultats: Comparativement aux patients ayant reçu des médicaments à action périphérique, ceux qui ont reçu des médicaments à action centrale ont bénéficié d’une meilleure fonction respiratoire (consommation maximale d’oxygène [VO2], p = 0,020; volume expiratoire maximal par seconde [VEMS], p = 0,007) et d’une meilleure efficacité ventilatoire (ventilation minute/production de dioxyde de carbone [VE/VCO2], p < 0,001; pression partielle de dioxyde de carbone en fin d’expiration [PETCO2], p = 0,015; et tendance de la capacité vitale forcée [CVF], p = 0,056). De plus, bon nombre des associations entre les paramètres de l’EECP et le type de médicament sont demeurées significatives après ajustement multivarié. Les patients qui ont reçu des médicaments à action centrale ont également présenté moins d’événements faisant partie du critère d’évaluation composé (p = 0,023) et moins d’hospitalisations liées à l’IC (p = 0,044), même si la différence après correction multivariée n’a pas été significative et que les rapports de risques étaient respectivement de 0,664 et de 0,757. Conclusions: Les médicaments à action centrale ont été associés à une meilleure fonction respiratoire, mesurée à l’aide des paramètres d’une EECP, chez les patients atteints d’IC. Ce résultat pourrait également s’appliquer au critère d’évaluation composé et aux hospitalisations, mais une étude plus puissante est nécessaire pour établir un lien cliniquement significatif avec l’effet des médicaments. Les médicaments à action centrale contre l’IC ont donc un rôle à jouer dans la correction de la faiblesse du diaphragme.

The taxonomic status of the freshwater crab Dilocarcinus septemdentatus (Herbst, 1783) is still not well established. Currently, the main issue involves synonymization with D. spinifer H. Milne Edwards, 1853, based on a variation of the angulation of the gonopod apex. These species are distributed along rivers and lakes in northern South America, with disjunct occurrences in central-west Brazil and Argentina. Due to these inconsistencies, an integrative approach was performed to elucidate these questions, with morphological (including NanoCT-Scan) and molecular analysis (Maximum Likelihood Trees, Bayesian Inference, Genetics Distance Matrix, and Haplotype Network), based on mitochondrial markers COI and 16S rRNA. Both analysis revealed and supported the existence of a species complex under the name of D. septemdentatus. Based on the results obtained, we propose the revalidation of D. spinifer, the description of a new species, and the redescription of D. septemdentatus s. str., with a neotype designation for this species. The hypothesis that this species complex originated in the Pebas System, an extensive mega wetland system that existed along the lowlands of Western Amazonia from late Oligocene to late Miocene (c. 23–11 mya) is discussed.

Due to potential alterations in atrial depolarization vectors in canine heart disease, the atrial electrical axis (AEA) may appear altered in patients with atrial remodeling (AR). The aim of this study was to analyze the AEA and P-wave duration in the electrocardiogram of three groups of dogs: healthy patients, cardiac patients without left AR, and cardiac patients with left AR. Of the 56 evaluated dogs, nine were healthy, 27 were cardiac patients without left AR, and 20 were cardiac patients with left AR. The classification of myxomatous mitral valve disease includes stage A, comprising dogs at high risk of developing the condition; stage B, which includes asymptomatic dogs subdivided into B1, with mitral valve regurgitation not yet causing cardiac remodeling, and B2, with sufficient mitral valve regurgitation to cause cardiac remodeling, where treatment is indicated even in the absence of clinical signs; stage C, covering symptomatic dogs; and stage D, including dogs refractory to treatment. Therefore, 27 dogs were in stage B1, two in B2, 15 in C, and three in D. The P-wave duration in the remodeling group (53 milliseconds (ms)) was higher (p=0.0088) than in the group without left AR (46 ms). The P-wave duration in healthy dogs did not differ from that of dogs with and without remodeling. The AEA in healthy animals (43.65±19.79º) was lower (p=0.0015) than in the groups with and without left AR (69.58±18.00º and 63.40±15.89º). Animals without remodeling did not differ from those with remodeling, and despite the difference found in healthy animals, the values were within the normal range for the species, and no cardiac dogs exhibited a deviation of the AEA. Stage D dogs had longer P-wave durations than healthy and stage B1 dogs and did not differ from stage B2 and C groups (p=0.0269). Healthy dogs did not differ from stage B2, C, or D dogs in recording the AEA, only being lower than the B1 dogs (p=0.0120). The AEA and P wave duration are parameters that should not be used to define left AR in dogs with heart disease.

O presente estudo objetivou investigar a relação que diferentes atores envolvidos com a agricultura familiar, residentes em uma comunidade Quilombola no município de Paulistana - Piauí, estabelecem com as atividades agropecuárias. Assim, foi conduzido um estudo de campo para realização de entrevistas com questionário semiestruturado, contendo perguntas objetivas e subjetivas. A maioria (76,47%) dos entrevistados era do sexo feminino, com idade entre 18 e 30 anos, tendo em sua maioria o ensino fundamental incompleto e renda de até 1 salário mínimo. 84,22% dos respondentes confirmaram que seus filhos contribuem com as atividades agropecuárias. Foram identificados 7 adolescentes, entre 12 e 18 anos. 70,58% dos adolescentes relataram realizar atividades agropecuárias e não agrícolas na propriedade familiar. Com relação a intenção de permanecer ou se evadir do ambiente rural, 64,70% afirmaram que pretendem migrar para zona urbana da cidade, a fim de estudar ou buscar melhores oportunidades de trabalho. 92,31% das mulheres responderam se sentir valorizadas pela sociedade e pelas entidades ligadas à agricultura familiar. Por sua vez, 87,5% dos idosos sinalizaram apresentar algum problema de saúde, dentre os quais destacam-se dores na coluna e hipertensão arterial. Portanto, é expressivo o número de crianças desenvolvendo atividades agropecuárias na comunidade rural e, por falta de oportunidades de trabalho e estudo, é elevada a parcela de jovens que não deseja permanecer na comunidade. Além disso, as mulheres desempenham papel importante no contexto da agricultura familiar, participando de maneira ativa das diversas atividades no âmbito da propriedade e da comunidade rural, assim como a população idosa agricultora demonstra problemas de saúde relacionados às suas atividades laborais.

Resumo Fundamento O choque cardiogênico (CC) refratário está associado com altas taxas de mortalidade, e o uso de oxigenação por membrana extracorpórea venoarterial (VA-ECMO, do inglês venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) como uma opção terapêutica tem gerado discussões. Nesse sentido, sua custo-efetividade, principalmente em países de baixa e média renda como o Brasil, continua incerto.Objetivos: Conduzir uma análise de custo-efetividade na perspectiva do Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS) para avaliar a custo-efetividade de VA-ECMO combinado com o tratamento padrão em comparação ao tratamento padrão isolado em pacientes adultos com CC refratário. Métodos Acompanhamos uma coorte de pacientes com CC refratário tratados com VA-ECMO em centros de assistência terciária do sul brasileiro. Coletamos dados de desfechos e custos hospitalares. Realizamos uma revisão sistemática para complementar nossos dados e usamos o modelo de Markov para estimar a razão de custo-efetividade incremental (RCEI) por ano de vida ajustado pela qualidade (QALY) e por ano de vida ganho. Resultados Na análise do caso-base, a VA-ECMO gerou uma RCEI de Int$ 37 491 por QALY. Análises de sensibilidade identificaram o custo de internação, o risco relativo de sobrevida, e a sobrevida do grupo submetido à VA-ECMO como principais variáveis influenciando os resultados. A análise de sensibilidade probabilística mostrou um benefício do uso de VA-ECMO, com uma probabilidade de 78% de custo-efetividade no limiar recomendado de disposição a pagar. Conclusões Nosso estudo sugere que, dentro do SUS, VA-ECMO pode ser uma terapia custo-efetiva para o CC refratário. Contudo, a escassez de dados sobre a eficácia e de ensaios clínicos recentes que abordem seus benefícios em subgrupos específicos de pacientes destaca a necessidade de mais pesquisas. Ensaios clínicos rigorosos, incluindo perfis diversos de pacientes, são essenciais para confirmar a custo-efetividade com uso de VA-ECMO e assegurar acesso igualitário a intervenções médicas avançadas dentro dos sistemas de saúde, especialmente em países com desigualdades socioeconômicas como o Brasil.

Ocypode Weber, 1795 (Brachyura: Ocypodidae) is popularly known as ghost crab, and encompasses 21 valid species, including Ocypode quadrata (Fabricius, 1787). This species has wide distribution along the Atlantic coast of America, from the USA (Massachusetts) to Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul), Central America, and Antilles. Such distribution, along with some biological characteristics of its life cycle and the presence of geographic barriers, could lead to genetic structuring. Herein, we evaluate the hypothesis of the presence of geographic barriers using COI and 16S partial gene fragments. The Maximum Likelihood tree suggests the monophyly of O. quadrata, while the values of intraspecific genetic distance along with the star-shaped haplotype network suggested a lack of genetic structure in Brazilian, Panama, and French Guiana populations, probably caused by larval dispersion. USA and Mexico populations may be a new lineage, but we cannot say it with few sequences and with no morphological characters.

ObjectiveIt was to evaluate changes in lifestyle habits and health behavior among university students in Peru and Mexico during periods of confinement associated with the COVID-19 pandemic and to identify possible relationships between these changes and sociodemographic variables, health status, and technology consumption.MethodsIt was a quantitative, observational, and cross-sectional study conducted among a population of 739 Mexican students and 305 Peruvian students, most of whom were women (n =778, 74.5%) and non-graduates (n =921, 88.2%). The questionnaire scale for changes in lifestyles during the quarantine period has been previously validated.ResultsThe association between sociodemographic factors and dimensions of change in healthy lifestyles was evaluated, and it was shown that gender and country of residence were significant for all dimensions of healthy lifestyle (p < 0.05), except for the level of education, which did not show significance about the change in the dimensions of media consumption (p = 0.875) and physical activity (p = 0.239). Within the dimensions mentioned, it can be stated that women are more likely than men to change their eating habits (adjusted prevalences (aPR) = 1.08, p < 0.001), media consumption (aPR = 1.04, p < 0.001), and physical activity (aPR = 1.02, p < 0.001). Meanwhile, participants from Peru are more likely than participants from Mexico to change physical activity (aPR = 1.14, p < 0.001) and media consumption (aPR = 1.22, p < 0.001). Finally, graduate students were more likely than undergraduate students to change eating habits (aPR = 1.09, p = 0.005) and unhealthy habits (aPR = 1.06, p = 0.030).ConclusionIt was concluded that there were lifestyle changes in Mexican and Peruvian university students in their eating habits, physical activity, internet consumption, and food delivery.

Abstract Brachycephalic breeds of dogs, most of which show signs of the brachycephalic syndrome may have greater parasympathetic stimulation than other breeds, leading to higher values of heart rate variability and vagal tone index. The aim of this study was to establish a computerized electrocardiographic study and an assessment of the vagus sympathetic balance through heart rate variability and vagal tone index of five brachycephalic breeds compared to mesocephalic dogs. IntroductionThis study aimed to describe the evolution of bone regeneration in children with hip osteonecrosis associated with sickle cell disease, treated with bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cell implants at the Professor Edgar Santos University Hospital Complex.Materials and methodsA non-randomized clinical trial was conducted with 48 patients of both sexes, aged between 11 and 18 years, diagnosed with femoral head osteonecrosis secondary to sickle cell disease. Patient selection was based on strict criteria, including confirmed diagnosis of sickle cell anemia and a stage of osteonecrosis compatible with the proposed treatment. Bone regeneration assessment was performed through radiographic examinations and magnetic resonance imaging, following the Ficat & Arlet criteria and the Salter-Thompson classification.ResultsStatistical analysis revealed a significant association between the patients’ age and positive treatment outcomes, suggesting that autologous bone marrow cell implantation is a safe and effective approach in the early stages of osteonecrosis. The majority of patients (87.5%) reported complete pain relief, while 10.42% experienced significant symptom improvement. Only one patient (2.08%) did not observe improvement. The results indicate that cell therapy can regenerate or slow the progression of bone necrosis, reducing the need for more invasive surgical procedures.ConclusionThe study demonstrates the potential of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cell implantation in treating hip osteonecrosis in children with sickle cell disease, emphasizing the importance of long-term monitoring of bone structure stability.

Advanced production systems usually are complex in nature and aim to deal with multiple performance measures simultaneously. Therefore, in most cases, the consideration of a single objective function is not sufficient to properly solve scheduling problems. This paper investigates the multi-objective mixed no-idle flowshop scheduling problem. The addressed optimization case is minimizing makespan subject to an upper bound on total completion time. To solve this problem, we proposed a two-stage iterated greedy and a multi-objective constructive heuristic. Moreover, we developed a new multi-objective improvement procedure focusing on increasing the performance of the developed methods in solving the addressed problem. and a new initialization procedure. We performed several computational tests in order to compare our developed methods with the main algorithms from similar scheduling problems in the literature. It was revealed that the proposed approaches give the best results compared with other state-of-the-art performing methods.

BackgroundPersistent symptoms and exercise intolerance have been reported after COVID-19, even months after the acute disease. Although, the long-term impact on exercise capacity and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is still unclear.Research questionTo assess the long-term functional capacity and HRQoL in patients hospitalized due to COVID-19.Study design and methodsThis is a prospective cohort study, conducted at two centers in Brazil, that included post-discharge COVID-19 patients and paired controls. The cohort was paired by age, sex, body mass index and comorbidities, using propensity score matching in a 1:3 ratio. Patients were eligible if signs or symptoms suggestive of COVID-19 and pulmonary involvement on chest computed tomography. All patients underwent cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) and a HRQoL questionnaire (SF-36) 6 months after the COVID-19. The main outcome was the percentage of predicted peak oxygen consumption (ppVO2). Secondary outcomes included other CPET measures and HRQoL.ResultsThe study sample comprised 47 post-discharge COVID-19 patients and 141 healthy controls. The mean age of COVID-19 patients was 54 ± 14 years, with 19 (40%) females, and a mean body mass index of 31 kg/m2 (SD, 6). The median follow-up was 7 months (IQR, 6.5–8.0) after hospital discharge. PpVO2 in COVID-19 patients was lower than in controls (83% vs. 95%, p = 0.002) with an effect size of 0.38 ([95%CI], 0.04–0.70). Mean peak VO2 (22 vs. 25 mL/kg/min, p = 0.04) and OUES (2,122 vs. 2,380, p = 0.027) were also reduced in the COVID-19 patients in comparison to controls. Dysfunctional breathing (DB) was present in 51%. HRQoL was significantly reduced in post COVID patients and positively correlated to peak exercise capacity.InterpretationHospitalized COVID-19 patients presented, 7 months after discharge, with a reduction in functional capacity and HRQoL when compared to historical controls. HRQoL were reduced and correlated with the reduced peak VO2 in our population.

O eletrocardiograma representa o registro gráfico das fases do ciclo cardíaco e é utilizado para o diagnóstico de arritmias ou distúrbios de condução. No entanto, a confiabilidade dos resultados pode ser influenciada pelo grau de experiência dos avaliadores. Devido à possibilidade de variação de resultados de um mesmo exame entre os ciclos cardíacos e entre analisadores de diferentes níveis de experiência, o estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a variabilidade interobservador e entre ciclos cardíacos durante a avaliação de exames eletrocardiográficos de cães. A pesquisa foi conduzida de forma retrospectiva na Superintendência Unidade Hospitalar Veterinária Universitária da Universidade Federal da Fronteira Sul, Campus Realeza – PR. Para a análise eletrocardiográfica foram selecionados aleatoriamente exames de 50 cães, gravados em arquivos computadorizados durante o período de setembro de 2018 a dezembro de 2019, independente da raça, sexo, idade e peso. Foram avaliados frequência e ritmo cardíaco, durações de onda P, complexo QRS, intervalo PR e intervalo QT, amplitudes de onda P, R e T, e eixo elétrico atrial e ventricular. Os dados foram analisados por teste de normalidade de Shapiro-Wilk, sendo os dados paramétricos analisados por análise de variância seguido por Teste de Tukey e os dados não paramétricos pelo Teste de Kruskal-Wallis, seguido pelo Teste de Dunn. Como última etapa, os dados foram submetidos ao Teste de Coeficiente de Concordância de Kappa. Evidenciou-se variabilidade na interpretação de ritmos cardíacos com discordância de avaliadores de nível baixo e intermediário, diferença da frequência cardíaca máxima do avaliador de baixo nível de experiência que subestimou os valores, obtendo mediana de 105, enquanto o de alto nível obteve mediana de 122 (p=0,0100). Ainda, evidenciou-se superestimação da duração da onda P pelos avaliadores de nível baixo e intermediário, que encontraram medianas de 52 e 51 respectivamente, enquanto o de alto nível obteve mediana de 48 (p=0,0064). Em relação a diferentes ciclos cardíacos, não houve diferenças entre a análise de apenas um ciclo em relação a três ciclos ou a média de três ciclos. Por meio do estudo foi possível evidenciar a variabilidade na interpretação entre avaliadores com diferentes níveis de experiência, em relação a duração da onda P, em que os avaliadores superestimaram os valores e em relação aos graus de concordância que não representaram os níveis de experiência dos avaliadores na análise do todas as variáveis, ressaltando a importância do treinamento e rotina de exames eletrocardiográficos para evitar interpretações e análises equivocadas.

Abstract Aims Studies in cardiogenic shock (CS) often have a heterogeneous population of patients, including those with acute myocardial infarction and acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF‐CS). The therapeutic profile of milrinone may benefit patients with ADHF‐CS. We compared the outcomes and haemodynamic trends in ADHF‐CS receiving either milrinone or dobutamine. Methods and results Patients presenting with ADHF‐CS (from 2014 to 2020) treated with a single inodilator (milrinone or dobutamine) were included in this study. Clinical characteristics, outcomes, and haemodynamic parameters were collected. The primary endpoint was 30 day mortality, with censoring at the time of transplant or left ventricular assist device implantation. A total of 573 patients were included, of which 366 (63.9%) received milrinone and 207 (36.1%) received dobutamine. Patients receiving milrinone were younger, had better kidney function, and lower lactate at admission. In addition, patients receiving milrinone received mechanical ventilation or vasopressors less frequently, whereas a pulmonary artery catheter was more frequently used. Milrinone use was associated with a lower adjusted risk of 30 day mortality (hazard ratio = 0.52, 95% confidence interval 0.35–0.77). After propensity‐matching, the use of milrinone remained associated with a lower mortality (hazard ratio = 0.51, 95% confidence interval 0.27–0.96). These findings were associated with improved pulmonary artery compliance, stroke volume, and right ventricular stroke work index. Conclusions The use of milrinone compared with dobutamine in patients with ADHF‐CS is associated with lower 30 day mortality and improved haemodynamics. These findings warrant further study in future randomized controlled trials.

In this interview, Giunta discusses the process of establishing her own categories, along with other reflections about the legacies left by the Verboamérica exhibition, its impact on subsequent Latin American modern art research and the academia and market's reactions. Giunta also explains how power relations have stopped and revealed projects hidden by the “official” historiography. She closes with an interpretation of Latin American recent history and the present challenges in pursuit of renewal because “change in drops” is no longer a solution.

Resumo Fundamento O impacto em longo prazo da hospitalização por COVID-19 sobre a saúde física, mental e cognitiva dos pacientes requer mais investigação. Objetivos Este artigo visa avaliar os fatores associados com a qualidade de vida e desfechos cardiovasculares e não cardiovasculares 12 meses após a internação hospitalar por COVID-19. Métodos Este estudo multicêntrico prospectivo pretende incluir 611 pacientes internados por COVID-19 (NCT05165979). Entrevistas telefônicas centralizadas estão programadas para ocorrer em três, seis, nove e 12 meses após a alta hospitalar. O desfecho primário é definido como o escore de utilidade de qualidade de vida relacionada à saúde avaliada pelo questionário EuroQol-5D-3L (EQ-5D-3L) aos 12 meses. Abstract This study evaluated feasibility statistically and analyzed, during the freezing period, the relationship between brightness temperature (Tb) data of the 37V polarisation and the GR3719 (Gradient Ratio 37V and 19V) obtained by Special Sensor Microwave/Imager from F11 and F13 satellites with sea ice thickness (SIT) data obtained in the Weddell Sea through Antarctic Sea Ice Processes and Climate program. The multiple linear regression (MLR) was applied at 1,520 points, with 70% of these points being randomly separated to generate the MLR and 30% to carry out the validation. To perform the temporal mapping, the MLR was applied only to pixels with sea ice concentration (SIC) ≥ 90%, obtained through the fraction image calculated from the spectral linear mixing model (SLMM) using the Tb in the channels and polarizations 19H, 19V and 37V. The results of the SLMM validation process for estimating the SIC were σ = 10.5%, RMSE = 11.0%, and bias = -2.8%, and the SIT based on the MLR, the results were R² = 0.57, RMSE = 0.268 m, and bias = 0.103 m. In the SIT mapping, we highlight the trend of thickness reduction on the east coast of the Antarctic Peninsula during the period 1992–2009.

Se evaluaron hormigones drenantes, elaborados con cemento portland compuesto, agregados gruesos graníticos, contenidos variables de agregado fino entre 0 y 16 % y de pasta desde 15 % a 25 % e incorporación de aditivos químicos. En estado fresco se evaluó la consistencia mediante el tronco de cono de Abrams y la prueba Hand-Squeeze. En estado endurecido, la resistencia a compresión a 7 y 28 días, la densidad seca aparente, la absorción, el contenido de vacíos, la permeabilidad y el espesor de la pasta circundante al agregado grueso. Se estudió la distribución de tamaño de los poros internos y se realizó una comparación entre la porosidad medida de forma convencional y por medio de análisis de imágenes. La resistencia aumentó con el contenido de finos, con el incremento del contenido de pasta y con el espesor de pasta y simultáneamente, se redujeron el contenido de vacíos y la permeabilidad.

Superconducting hybrid systems are becoming an increasingly important platform to conduct investigations in the field of quantum information processing. Here, the authors report a highly cooperative coupling between the nuclear spin of an Yb(III) molecular complex with a superconducting microwave resonator achieving a large hyperfine-mediated coupling between a resonator mode and the nuclear spin that could be used for the realization and readout of qudits.

Abstract Aim The aim of this study was to investigate the isotopic signature of P. brasiliana captured in three different points along the river flow toward the sea of the Prumirim River, northern coast of the state of São Paulo/Brazil in order to test the hypothesis of similarity between isotopic signature of individuals living in separated areas of the river. Methods We used stable isotope analyses (δ13C and δ15N) at three points of the river and ANOVA and Bayesian Ellipses analyses were performed. Results Our results showed that are a differential isotopic enrichment along the river course in 13C, providing important results on the environmental condition and anthropogenic impacts in the region. In addition, the food biology of P. brasiliana was characterized as a primary consumer corroborating with the detritivores feeding habit observed in previous studies of stomach content analysis. Conclusions Our research, limited to a single area along the northern coast of the state of São Paulo, uncovers intriguing findings that merit replication in other areas within the region. This is particularly crucial given the rising number of anthropogenic influences resulting from urban development, underscoring the need for improved monitoring of these areas.

The macroscopic properties of composite materials depend on the microscopic properties of the constituents and the geometric arrangement of their phases. Therefore, it is essential to predict heterogeneous materials’ mechanical properties by simulating microstructural finite element models. The present article aims to analyze particle reinforced composites composed of spherical alumina inclusions surrounded by a glass matrix using a tridimensional representative volume element. Herein, microstructures are artificially created considering a regular or random arrangement of the inclusions. Two materials systems previously studied in the literature were analyzed. The discretization of the models was performed to have periodic mesh, thus enabling the use of periodic boundary conditions. A finite element model is created using Abaqus software. Numerical results show that the macroscopic properties can be estimated with high accuracy for the temperature where linear matrix behavior stands. The predictions were compared to experimental data from the literature. The models with a regular arrangement of inclusions show a difference inferior to 10%, while random arrangements show a difference inferior to 3.9%. The developed numerical algorithms can be modified to include new features, such as other dispersed phase arrangements or nonlinear material behavior.

Objetive: The present study analyzes environmental, biological and fishing factors incidence in the formation and mortality of the Cachirra event. Methodology: We collected samples from fishing nets used by the fishermen of "arranchaderos" community located in Navio Quebrao Lagoon (NQL). IDEAM provided 2017 climatologic data. Physicochemical variables were measured with Spectroquant SQ 118 and other direct measurement electronic devices. SPSS statistical software version 24.0 was used to analyze data and their relationships. Results: 12 species intervene in the formation of the Cachirra event, predominantly the Mugilidae family. Salinity was the physicochemical variable that most affected the mortality of the species -October (6.0 PSU) and March (67.4 PSU)-. Conclusions: Fishes die according to their susceptibility to salinity changes, being the most susceptible species Cathrorops spixii and Eugerres plumieri, and the most resistant Elops saurus and Mugil liza. The species present in NQL have sizes well below commercial significance and different condition factor values and repletion index values before and after the Cachirra event.

Helicobacter pylori es un carcinógeno tipo I resistente a múltiples antibióticos y con alta prioridad en salud pública. La infección por este microorganismo está influenciada por una interacción compleja entre la genética del huésped, el entorno y múltiples factores de virulencia de la cepa infectante. Afecta al 50 % de la población mundial, provocando afecciones gastroduodenales graves, la mayoría de forma asintomática. El 20 % de los individuos con H. pylori pueden desarrollar a través del tiempo lesiones gástricas preneoplásicas y el 2 % de ellos un cáncer gástrico. Las manifestaciones clínicas gastrointestinales y extragastrointestinales están asociadas a su virulencia y a la respuesta del sistema inmunológico con la liberación de citosinas proinflamatorias, tales como TNF-alfa, IL-6, IL-10 e IL-8, causantes de inflamación aguda y crónica. Múltiples factores de virulencia han sido estudiados como el gen A asociado a la citotoxina (CagA) y la citotoxina vacuolante (VacA), los cuales juegan un rol importante en la aparición del cáncer gástrico. Dada la resistencia cada vez mayor a los antibióticos utilizados, las líneas de estudio en el futuro inmediato deben estar encaminadas en establecer la utilidad de los nuevos antibióticos y la determinación de profagos colombianos en todo el país. Esta revisión tiene como objetivo hacer una puesta al día sobre las características del H. pylori, los mecanismos patogénicos, genes de virulencia, su asociación con el mayor riesgo de cáncer gástrico, farmacorresistencia microbiana y su erradicación.

Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial efficacy of non-thermal atmospheric plasma (NTAP) against Streptococcus mutans biofilms. Resin discs were fabricated, wet-polished, UV sterilized, and immersed in water for monomer extraction (37 °C, 24 h). Biofilms of bioluminescent S. mutans strain JM10 was grown on resin discs in anaerobic conditions for (37 °C, 24 h). Discs were divided into seven groups: control (CON), 2% chlorhexidine (CHX), only argon gas 150 s (ARG) and four NTAP treatments (30 s, 90 s, 120 s, 150 s). NTAP was applied using a plasma jet device. After treatment, biofilms were analyzed through the counting of viable colonies (CFU), bioluminescence assay (BL), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). All NTAP-treated biofilm yielded a significant CFU reduction when compared to ARG and CON. BL values showed that NTAP treatment for 90 s, 120 s or 150 s resulted in statistically significantly lower metabolic activity when compared to the other groups. CHX displayed the lowest means of CFU and BL. SEM showed significant morphological changes in NTAP-treated biofilm. PCR indicated damage to the DNA structure after NTAP treatment. NTAP treatment was effective in lowering the viability and metabolism of S. mutans in a time-dependent manner, suggesting its use as an intraoral surface-decontamination strategy.

The adsorption of lead in aqueous solution onto Acrocomia aculeata pulp was examined. The pulp was characterized in the presence and absence of lead using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TG-DTA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Sulfur and oxygen bonds were responsible for adsorbing lead onto the pulp surface. The TG-DTA profile proved that adding sodium azide increases the pulp’s thermal stability until 200 °C. Adsorption data in batch and column systems were analyzed to understand the pulp adsorption compared to other biomaterials. In the batch experiments, the removal efficiency reached a maximum of 91.9% when a solution of 50 ppm of lead was placed in contact with the pulp for 30 min and fit Freundlich isotherm behavior. In the column experiments, the theoretical maximum adsorption capacity was found to be 11.97 mg g–1; more column data is needed to compare column results to other studies. Further studies to improve the pulp adsorption capacity are needed for it to be a competitive biomaterial for water treatment.

Abstract Background Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CLas) is one the causative agents of greening disease in citrus, an unccurable, devastating disease of citrus worldwide. CLas is vectored by Diaphorina citri, and the understanding of the molecular interplay between vector and pathogen will provide additional basis for the development and implementation of successful management strategies. We focused in the molecular interplay occurring in the gut of the vector, a major barrier for CLas invasion and colonization. Results We investigated the differential expression of vector and CLas genes by analyzing a de novo reference metatranscriptome of the gut of adult psyllids fed of CLas-infected and healthy citrus plants for 1-2, 3-4 and 5-6 days. CLas regulates the immune response of the vector affecting the production of reactive species of oxygen and nitrogen, and the production of antimicrobial peptides. Moreover, CLas overexpressed peroxiredoxin, probably in a protective manner. The major transcript involved in immune expression was related to melanization, a CLIP-domain serine protease we believe participates in the wounding of epithelial cells damaged during infection, which is supported by the down-regulation of pangolin. We also detected that CLas modulates the gut peristalsis of psyllids through the down-regulation of titin, reducing the elimination of CLas with faeces. The up-regulation of the neuromodulator arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase implies CLas also interferes with the double brain-gut communication circuitry of the vector. CLas colonizes the gut by expressing two Type IVb pilin flp genes and several chaperones that can also function as adhesins. We hypothesized biofilm formation occurs by the expression of the cold shock protein of CLas. Conclusions The thorough detailed analysis of the transcritome of Ca. L. asiaticus and of D. citri at different time points of their interaction in the gut tissues of the host led to the identification of several host genes targeted for regulation by L. asiaticus, but also bacterial genes coding for potential effector proteins. The identified targets and effector proteins are potential targets for the development of new management strategies directed to interfere with the successful utilization of the psyllid vector by this pathogen.

O objetivo desta pesquisa é verificar a relação entre o trabalho explícito com a consciência morfológica e a aquisição de vocabulário de alunos adolescentes aprendizes de inglês como língua adicional. Pesquisas como as de Jornlin (2015), Akbulut (2017) e Alsaeedi (2017), entre outras, mostram que a consciência morfológica tem um papel fundamental na aprendizagem de estudantes de inglês como língua adicional. Para atingir o objetivo da pesquisa, foi implementada uma intervenção organizada em torno de jogos e atividades lúdicas autorais. Participaram adolescentes matriculados em um curso de extensão do Núcleo de Línguas Adicionais da Universidade Federal do Pampa. A intervenção ocorreu durante um período de dez semanas, no primeiro semestre de 2019. Os resultados, obtidos a partir de pré-testes e pós-testes de consciência morfológica e vocabulário, apontam que os estudantes obtiveram ganhos em relação à consciência morfológica e ampliaram seus conhecimentos de vocabulário. Dessa maneira, a pesquisa sugere que a intervenção desempenhou um papel significativo no processo de ensino-aprendizagem de inglês como língua adicional.

Abstract Marine shrimps of the genus Thor Kingsley, 1878 are distributed in the eastern and western Atlantic, eastern Pacific, and Indo-West Pacific. Thor manningi Chace, 1972 was originally described from Antigua and since then has been recorded from other Atlantic localities, including the Caribbean Sea, Bermuda, USA, Brazil, and Ascension Island. Specimens previously identified as T. manningi from Panama and Brazil were analyzed using a combination of morphological and molecular approaches. The analyses yielded a new species from the Atlantic coast of Panama, herein described as Thor paulae sp. nov. Moreover, we provide additional morphological observations on T. manningi, mainly regarding mouthparts and pereopods. The new species is morphologically similar to the Pacific Thor cocoensis Wicksten and Vargas, 2001 and Thor marguitae Bruce, 1978. However, it can be separated from them by the carpus of the second pereopod, rostral dorsal dentition, and chela of the first pereopod, respectively. The two species studied here can be easily distinguished by the supraorbital prominence in T. manningi (versus absent in the new species), and the pterygostomial margin rounded and unarmed in T. manningi (versus angular, with tooth in the new species). Thor manningi is morphologically closer to the western Atlantic Thor dobkini Chace, 1972 and Thor floridanus Kingsley, 1878, but can be separated from both by the merus of the first pereopod (T. dobkini) and dactylus of fourth and fifth pereopods (T. floridanus, but with the possibility of overlap). We provide a comparative table with morphological characters of all 17 valid species of Thor, as well as a worldwide identification key to the genus.

Abstract The morphology of the first zoeal stage of Pilumnus vinaceus is described and compared with the zoea I of Pilumnus all species in the literature. Two ovigerous females of P. vinaceus were maintained in the aquarium facilities until the larvae hatch. The larvae of each ovigerous female were dissected using a stereoscopic microscope. The zoea I of P. vinaceus has common characteristics among the Pilumnidae as: [1] antenna of type 2; [2] maxilliped 1 with 2+2+3+3 setae on the basis and with 3,2,1,2,5 setae in the endopod; [3] maxilliped 2 with 1+1+1+1 setae on the basis and 1,1,6 setae on the endopod; [4] telson with furcal rami armed with dorsal and lateral spines. Considering the species of Pilumnus that occur in the western Atlantic, it becomes possible to identify P. vinaceus zoea I by means of the verification of the following characteristics: [1] pleonites with mediolateral processes; [2] number of setae on the antennule. It is however, important to consider that there is still a great deficit in the knowledge about the morphology of the larval forms of the species assigned to Pilumnus and we argue in favor of new descriptions to build a more robust dataset on zoeal morphology characters and use it in a phylogenetic context on the genus.

Traumatic atlanto-occipital dislocation (TAOD) are uncommon injuries associated with high immediate mortality rate and occurs more than twice in children than adults, due to biomechanical properties and immaturity of children's cervical spine. We report a pediatric patient with TAOD, who underwent occipitocervical stabilization and also developed a late hydrocephalus requiring a shunt procedure. A six-year-old boy was admitted to the emergency department after a car accident with refractory cervical pain. A cervical computed tomography (CT) scan showed an anterior C1–C2 level hematoma, and a dynamic CT scan demonstrated an increasing basion-dens interval on extension. Cervical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed discontinuity of the tectorial membrane and diffused hyperintense signal on the left alar ligament. These findings were attributed to TAOD, and an occipitocervical fusion was performed. The pain and neurological status improved after surgery, but after 3 months he returned with persistent vomiting, headache, and a CT scan showing hydrocephalus. Then, a ventriculoperitoneal shunt was performed, improving the symptoms. One year after the injury, the patient remained asymptomatic, and a later radiography demonstrated satisfactory bone fusion. In conclusion, the decision-making process regarding treatment should consider several clinical and radiographic findings. Occipitocervical fusion is the treatment of choice, while hydrocephalus is not an unusual complication in children.

Jeremy Gauthier et al. present the chromosome scale assembly of the genome of the parasitic wasp C. congregata and show that bracovirus genes have colonized all ten chromosomes. Comparison with genome scaffolds of another wasp reveals a striking stability of these regions over ~53 million years, suggesting strong evolutionary constraints.

La arquitectura del denominado “primer renacimiento español” se caracteriza por la combinación de elementos de origen medieval (ya sea del gótico como del mudéjar) con las nuevas influencias del renacimiento italiano. Hasta aquí reseñamos un tema conocido, pero casualmente, a partir de dos recientes visitas a un ejemplo excepcional, el Palacio Avellaneda, nos han surgido una serie de reflexiones acerca del período y de su tratamiento en la historiografía que proponemos compartir. Se ha interpretado tradicionalmente a estas obras como fenómenos donde huellas del pasado medieval se proyectan en un presente signado por la novedad renacentista. Entendemos, por el contrario que los elementos mudéjares no conforman una huella o sombra de un fenómeno pasado sino una componente presente en la cultura española cuyos rasgos, lejos de ser accesorios o superficiales, definen la estructura a partir de la cual dichos edificios han sido concebidos. El Palacio Avellaneda refleja esta problemática de manera sorprendentemente clara comunicando la complejidad y contradicción de una sociedad bifronte. Comunicación, complejidad, contradicción. Salta a la vista que esta aproximación no sería posible sin el aporte del recientemente fallecido Robert Venturi, proponemos pues una relectura en clave “Venturiana” de la obra y su período.

PURPOSEHead and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) incidence is high in South America, where recent data on survival are sparse. We investigated the main predictors of HNSCC survival in Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Colombia.METHODSSociodemographic and lifestyle information was obtained from standardized interviews, and clinicopathologic data were extracted from medical records and pathologic reports. The Kaplan-Meier method and Cox regression were used for statistical analyses.RESULTSOf 1,463 patients, 378 had a larynx cancer (LC), 78 hypopharynx cancer (HC), 599 oral cavity cancer (OC), and 408 oropharynx cancer (OPC). Most patients (55.5%) were diagnosed with stage IV disease, ranging from 47.6% for LC to 70.8% for OPC. Three-year survival rates were 56.0% for LC, 54.7% for OC, 48.0% for OPC, and 37.8% for HC. In multivariable models, patients with stage IV disease had approximately 7.6 (LC/HC), 11.7 (OC), and 3.5 (OPC) times higher mortality than patients with stage I disease. Current and former drinkers with LC or HC had approximately 2 times higher mortality than never-drinkers. In addition, older age at diagnosis was independently associated with worse survival for all sites. In a subset analysis of 198 patients with OPC with available human papillomavirus (HPV) type 16 data, those with HPV-unrelated OPC had a significantly worse 3-year survival compared with those with HPV-related OPC (44.6% v 75.6%, respectively), corresponding to a 3.4 times higher mortality.CONCLUSIONLate stage at diagnosis was the strongest predictor of lower HNSCC survival. Early cancer detection and reduction of harmful alcohol use are fundamental to decrease the high burden of HNSCC in South America.

Lexical Expansion is a recurring theme in historical linguistics and sociolinguistics. As far as we know, the present study is the first attempt to pursuit the subject through an experimental approach. In the present paper, we report the results of a lexical decision test based on loan words from English that accept affixes from Brazilian Portuguese (eg. clipagem, cropar). A CRT regression tree indicates that participants recognize these words better than pseudowords. However, their responses are slower and cannot be compared to responses for English or for Brazilian Portuguese words.

Abstract Macrobrachium candango Mantelatto, Pileggi, Pantaleão, Magalhães, Villalobos and Álvarez, 2021 is an endemic shrimp species to the Brazilian Central-West region (Brasília, Federal District). The present study aims to analyze the relative growth, morphometry, morphological sexual maturity, and fecundity of this species. Specimens were collected from tributaries of the Paranoá Lake hydrographic basin, Brasília, during sporadic periods between 1983 and 2012. Relative growth was analyzed for different structures (carapace, abdomen, second abdominal pleura, merus, carpus, and propodus). The laterality and heterochely patterns were evaluated based on the dimensions of the propodus length. Fecundity was calculated as the average total number of eggs per female and egg size was measured to obtain the volume. There were differences in relative growth (p < 0.05) of the structures analyzed between juveniles and adults, and distinct allometric patterns were observed between the life stages, which could reflect the habit of these animals at each developmental stage. No pattern of laterality and heterochely was observed between the chelipeds of the animals analyzed (p > 0.05). The lack of laterality may indicate that this species directs energy to the smallest propodus when the largest propodus is injured. Egg volume ranged from 4.41 to 7.71 mm3, and fecundity ranged from 38 to 61 eggs, indicating a life cycle with abbreviated larval development. The characteristics presented herein are unprecedented for M. candango and present relevant information needed to assess the conservation status of this species, which is currently threatened.

PurposeThe coronavirus-2019 (COVID-19) infection is associated with a high risk of complications and death among heart transplant recipients. However, most cohorts are from high-income countries, while data from Latin America are sparse.MethodsThis is a retrospective cohort of heart transplant recipients followed at a hospital in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, between March 1st 2020 and October 1st 2021.ResultsOf the 62 heart transplant recipients on follow-up, 21 (34%) were infected by COVID-19, 58 (36–63) years of age, 67% male, body mass index of 26 (23-29) kg/m2, 48% with hypertension, 43% with chronic kidney disease, 5% with diabetes, within 2 (1–4) years of post-transplant follow-up. At presentation, the main symptoms were fever (62%), myalgia (33%), cough (33%), headache (33%), and dyspnea (19%). Hospitalization was required for 13 (62%) patients, with a time from first symptoms to the admission of 5 (1–12) days. In 38%, supplementary oxygen was needed, 19% required intensive care, and 10% mechanical ventilation. Three (14%) were infected after at least a first dose of COVID-19 vaccine. The main complications were bacterial pneumonia (38%), renal replacement therapy (19%), sepsis (10%) and venous thromboembolism (10%). Immunosuppression therapy was modified in 48%, with a reduction in the majority (89%). Two (10%) patients died in the hospital due to refractory hypoxemia and multiple organ dysfunction. The incidence of COVID-19 among transplant patients was comparable to the general population in the State of Rio Grande do Sul with a peak in December 2020.ConclusionHeart transplant recipients shown a high rate of COVID-19 infection in Southern Brazil, with typical symptom presentation in most cases. There was an elevated rate of hospitalization, supplementary oxygen support, and complications. In-hospital lethality among infected heart transplanted recipients was similar to previously reported data worldwide despite the high rates of infection in Latin America.

El objetivo de la investigación fue determinar la competitividad de la tara peruana en el comercio internacional en el período 2010-2018, considerando las teorías de: World Economic Forum – WEF (2018), Cann 2016), Gómez (2017), Cordero (2005), Porter 2008), Daniels, Radebaugh, y Sullivan (2013), Lerma y Márquez (2010), con un proceso metodológico que definió un estudio exploratorio por los datos fragmentados existentes que se recolectaron y seleccionaron de instituciones gubernamentales: Ministerio de Agricultura y Riego-MINAGRI (2009, 2010, 2017 a, 2017 b), Ministerio de Agricultura y Riego-MINAGRI y Servicio Nacional Forestal y de Fauna Silvestre-SERFOR (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019), Sistema Integrado de Información de Comercio Exterior- SIICEX (2019), Superintendencia Nacional de Aduanas y de Administración TributariaSUNAT (2019) y particulares: Sociedad Nacional de Industrias-SIN (2018), así como, por los escasos estudios acerca de la unidad de análisis, complementado con métodos de análisis de contenido y frecuencia. Los resultados concluyen que la tara peruana no es competitiva debido que mientras su producción fue descendente desde el año 2010 (32736 TM) hasta el 2018 (25866 TM) su valor FOB tuvo un alza permanente desde el año 2010 (27075.9) a 39228. 49 el año 2018, que el cálculo de Costo de los Recursos Domésticos (CRD) analizo por el factor precio indicando que sólo el año 2016 manifestó competitividad porque el precio internacional por Kg. fue de cerca de $3.00 dólares americanos en relación al precio doméstico de S/. 1.51 nuevos soles, además, por no cumplir satisfactoriamente los 12 pilares del enfoque de competitividad del World Economic Forum-WEF (2018); que permiten reflexionar acerca del tránsito de la estructura de exportación basada en ventajas comparativas a su transformación sustentada en ventajas competitivas que el país andino tramita.

Este artigo tem como objetivo socializar resultados de um trabalho acadêmico produzido no âmbito de duas disciplinas de um curso de Licenciatura em Educação do Campo, com proposta de um estudo de natureza histórica, visando à (re)constituição da história de uma comunidade rural, nas vozes dos sujeitos locais. Para isso, contou-se com o referencial teórico-metodológico da História Oral e com a realização de entrevistas semiestruturadas com dois moradores da Comunidade Aurora, município de Rio Pardo de Minas-MG. Buscou-se constituir uma versão da história da Comunidade, remontando aos seus primeiros moradores para poder compreender, em suas narrativas, os aspectos pertinentes à cultura, religião e educação daquele território. Como resultado, percebeu-se que a Comunidade Aurora, apesar de não ser reconhecida como sendo tradicional, salienta características peculiares quanto ao modo de ser e viver no campo, com implicações importantes na formação de futuros professores em Educação do Campo.

Entender os fatores climáticos que possam afetar a formação do gelo marinho no Oceano Austral é de fundamental importância para estudos climatológicos globais, principalmente para a região extratropical. Porém, encontram-se limitações para a coleta de dados meteorológicos “in situ” devido a dificuldades logísticas na instalação e manutenção periódica de estações meteorológicas na Antártica. Diante disto, o sensoriamento remoto está possibilitando o fornecimento de informações por meio de imagens satelitais e modelos de reanálise atmosférica para entender o impacto das mudanças climáticas sobre o gelo marinho. Este trabalho apresenta o estado da arte sobre a influência dos principais fatores climáticos na formação, localização e duração do gelo marinho na Antártica com o emprego de sensores remotos e modelos de reanálise atmosférica

Background: Despite the various treatment protocols available, survival evaluation is a fundamental criterion for the definition of surgical management; there are still many inconsistencies in the literature on this topic, especially in terms of the value of surgery and its morbidity in patients with very short survival. Objective: The objective was to analyze the association of clinical, oncological, and surgical factors in the survival of patients undergoing spinal surgery for spinal metastases (SM). Materials and Methods: A retrospective cohort of forty patients who were surgically treated at our institution for SM between 2010 and 2018 were included in the study. We applied the prognostic scales of Tomita and Tokuhashi in each patient and evaluated the systemic status using Karnofsky Performance Scale (KPS) and Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group Performance Scale. Survival rate in months was estimated using the Kaplan–Meier curve, with death considered as primary outcome and, for the evaluation of the association between the variables, the Chi-square test, Fisher's exact test, or Fisher–Freeman–Halton test was applied for better survival. The level of statistical significance was considered as 5% (P ≤≤ 0.05). Results: The mean survival was 8.4 months. Patients with KPS 70 had a mean survival of 14.48 months (P = 0.04). The mean survival of patients classified as ECOG 2 was 7.05 months (95% confidence interval [CI]: 3.4–10.7), and that of patients classified as ECOG 3 and 4 was 1.24 months (95% CI: 0.8–1.59). The mean survival rate among the patients with unresectable metastases in other organs was 6.3 months (95% CI: 3.9–8.9), while the survival rate of those who did not have metastases was 13.8 months (95% CI: 10.0–17.68; P = 0.022). Conclusion: Survival was associated with the preoperative functional status defined by the KPS and ECOG scales and with the presence of nonresectable visceral metastases.

O propósito do trabalho foi verificar a qualidade fisiológica das sementes da fisális (Physalis peruviana L.) tendo em vista que a cultura vem se destacando e ganhando espaço no mercado brasileiro como uma alternativa de diversificação na produção agrícola para os agricultores familiares. Foram realizados dois experimentos, sendo o primeiro avaliando a temperatura e a luminosidade na germinação das sementes, e o segundo avaliando a influência do tempo de armazenamento das sementes na germinação e vigor. Foram aplicados os testes de germinação, teste a frio sem terra e envelhecimento acelerado para verificar o comportamento em diferentes períodos de armazenamento (zero, 30, 60, 120, 180 e 240 dias). Em ambas as avaliações se aplicaram o Delineamento Inteiramente Casualizado (DIC), sendo que os resultados entre a germinação e temperatura foram submetidos à ANOVA, e entre a germinação e o período de armazenamento analisados também pela ANOVA e aplicado a regressão polinomial, ambas ao nível de significância de 5%. A pesquisa constatou que o percentual de germinação é maior aos 28 dias após a semeadura, na temperatura de 20º C, entretanto, não diferem estatisticamente entre as avaliações realizadas aos 21 e 28 dias, nas temperaturas 20, 25 e 30º C. Já o período de armazenamento apresentou correlação linear negativa no potencial fisiológico das sementes.

Introduction: Tooth whitening procedures are under continuous investigation to improve esthetic outcomes and reduce bleaching sensitivity (BS) precipitating from treatments. During the dental bleaching process it is known that the release of free radicals degrades the organic pigment molecules of the tooth and with this an amount of energy is released. Nonetheless, previous studies have never investigated the temporal correlation between of pH and electric potential (EP) generated in this treatment. Objectives: Therefore, the objective of the present study was to investigate temporal variations of pH and EP associated with three different commercially available bleaching gels and the correlation levels between parameters of interest to provide relevant information regarding the kinetics of oxidation reactions in dental bleaching procedures. Methods: The study was divided into 3 groups (n = 9) in function of hydrogen peroxide concentration (either 6%, 15% and 35%). The temporal evolution of pH and EP values were determined using a highly-accurate and previously calibrated pH meter at specific time-points (5, 10, 15 and 30 min). Results: Data obtained were submitted to one-way ANOVA of repeated measures with Bonferroni post-test (α = 0.05). The results of the study showed difference in the factor gel concentration (p < 0,0001), time (p < 0,0001) and interaction (gel/time) (p = 0.002) while throughout the intervals evaluated the groups remained relatively stable and without significant difference in the intragroup variation of pH (p < 0.05) and in EDP only with significant difference in the 5 min interval of the 35% concentration. A 2nd order polynomial relationship test showed high correlation levels. Conclusion: It can thus be concluded that there is a negative relationship between EP and pH variation in the different gel concentrations. Clinical significance: The findings of the present study suggest that bleaching gels of higher concentration may provoke BS that are more intense and durable due to significant electric depolarization of neuronal extensions of pulpal tissues.

One of the quality control parameters of ethanol fuel is pH, established by the Brazilian standard ABNT NBR 10891, whose scope is specific for hydrated ethanol fuel, and by the American standard ASTM D 6423, which focuses on anhydrous ethanol fuel. This study presented a modified and optimized structure using a single solvent, both for the glass electrode and the external reference electrode, to minimize the presence of the liquid junction potential for measuring the pH of hydrated ethanol fuel. The Box–Behnken design enabled us to determine the optimal condition expected for the new measurement system, which was compared with the systems proposed by the standard references and the turning range of acid–base indicators using parametric and nonparametric tests. The results revealed that the pH values obtained by the different systems are statistically different, and that only the values obtained by this proposal are suitable for the pH range found by the indicators. The optimized electrode presented an adequate response sensitivity to the Nernst equation, having an operational behavior adequate for the modified and optimized glass electrode for pH measurements in hydrated ethanol fuel.

Experimental adhesives with functional nitrogen-doped titanium dioxide nanoparticles (N_TiO2) have been shown to display improved properties. However, these materials have not been characterized regarding their degree of conversion (DC), biaxial flexure strength (BFS), surface roughness (SR), elastic modulus (EM), and long-term antibacterial functionalities. Experimental adhesives were synthesized by dispersing N_TiO2 (10%, 20%, or 30%, v/v%) into OptiBond Solo Plus (OPTB, Kerr Corp., USA). Unpolymerized adhesives (volume = 50 μL/drop, n = 3/group) were individually placed onto a heated (37 °C) attenuated total reflectance (ATR) monolithic diamond crystal (Golden Gate, Specac). The spectra of composites were obtained with a Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer (Nicolet IS50; 500–4500 cm−1; resolution = 4 cm−1, 10 internal scans/spectrum) before and after polymerization. Disk-shaped specimens (diameter = 6.0 mm, thickness = 0.5 mm) for BFS (n = 12/group), SR and EM (n = 3/group), and for antibacterial testing (n = 18/group/time-point) were fabricated and photopolymerized (1 min each; 385–515 nm, 1000 mW/cm2; VALO). DC values (%) were calculated from pre- and post-polymerization spectra using the two-frequency method and tangent-baseline technique. BFS was assessed using a universal testing machine (Instron 68TM-5, crosshead speed = 1.27 mm/min, 25 °C). SR and EM were investigated using an atomic force microscope (Multimode 8) with aluminum-coated silicon probes (8 nm pyramidal tip, spring constant 40 N/m, Bruker). Antibacterial testing was performed by growing Streptococcus mutans biofilms (UA159-ldh, 37 °C, microaerophilic) on the surfaces of specimens for 24 h and then measuring the relative luminescence units (RLU) with a Biotek Synergy HT multi-well plate reader. Results demonstrate that experimental materials containing 10%, 20%, and 30% of N_TiO2 displayed higher levels of DC, had better mechanical properties, and were able to exert strong and durable antibacterial properties without visible light irradiation and after extended periods of simulated shelf-life and aging in PBS. The reported experimental materials are expected to increase the service lives of polymer-based bonded restorations by decreasing the incidence of secondary caries.

The Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri, is the vector of the bacterium “Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus” (Las), associated with the devastating, worldwide citrus disease huanglongbing. In order to explore the molecular interactions of this bacterium with D. citri during the vector acquisition process, cDNA libraries were sequenced on an Illumina platform, obtained from the gut of adult psyllids confined in healthy (H) and in Las-infected young shoots (Las) for different periods of times (I = 1/2 days, II = 3/4 days, and III = 5/6 days). In each sampling time, three biological replicates were collected, containing 100 guts each, totaling 18 libraries depleted in ribosomal RNA. Reads were quality-filtered and mapped against the Chinese JXGC Las strain and the Floridian strain UF506 for the analysis of the activity of Las genome and SC1, SC2, and type 3 (P-JXGC-3) prophages of the studied Las strain. Gene activity was considered only if reads of at least two replicates for each acquisition access period mapped against the selected genomes, which resulted in coverages of 44.4, 79.9, and 94.5% of the JXGC predicted coding sequences in Las I, Las II, and Las III, respectively. These genes indicate an active metabolism and increased expression according to the feeding time in the following functional categories: energy production, amino acid metabolism, signal translation, cell wall, and replication and repair of genetic material. Pilins were among the most highly expressed genes regardless of the acquisition time, while only a few genes from cluster I of flagella were not expressed. Furthermore, the prophage region had a greater coverage of reads for SC1 and P-JXGC-3 prophages and low coverage in SC2 and no indication of activity for the lysis cycle. This research presents the first descriptive analysis of Las transcriptome in the initial steps of the D. citri gut colonization, where 95% of Las genes were active.

The present pilot study had the objective to determine the effects of transcutaneous and transmucosal laser irradiation on arterial blood pressure (ABP), glucose (Glu) triglycerides (Tg), total cholesterol (Ch), high-density level cholesterol (HDL) and low-density cholesterol (LDL) immediately after treatment (T0) and after 30 (T30) and 60 (T60) days. Patients (n = 36) were selected and randomly distributed into 6 groups (n = 6/group; [G1] negative control, [G2] radial artery transcutaneous laser irradiation [G3] radial artery transcutaneous irradiation, [G4] transmucosal sublingual irradiation, [G5] transmucosal intra-nasal irradiation and [G6] extended radial artery transcutaneous irradiation). Blood exams were performed at T0, T30 and T60. Systolic and diastolic pressure results have indicated that patients' pressures ranged from 90 mmHg (P22, T30, G4) to 189 mmHg (P16, T0, G3) and 54 mmHg (P21, T60, G4) to 175 mmHg (P16, T30, G3). Levels of Glu at T30 and T60 varied from 5.53% (G1) to -5.78% (G6) and 1.21 (G2) to -8.69 (G6), respectively. Data was statistically assessed for normality and homogeneity of variances using the F-statistic and Bartlett's tests. Significant differences were determined using One-Way ANOVA and Fischer post hoc tests. Results indicated that treatments investigated can be safely used as an adjunct method to regulate blood pressure, glucose, triglycerides and cholesterol.

Esta entrevista aborda o tema da educação, tendo como fio condutor a formação e a trajetória intelectual do autor da Teoria da Subjetividade em uma abordagem cultural-histórica, Fernando González Rey. Mais que uma entrevista convencional, tratou-se de um diálogo, que aborda a riqueza e a densidade do pensamento vivo do autor. Por meio de sua perspectiva da subjetividade, a educação encontra-se permanentemente articulada à geração de relações e espaços sociais voltados ao desenvolvimento subjetivo. Indivíduos, grupos sociais e instituições articulam-se complexamente na organização dos processos educativos, que se encontram, por um lado, indissociados da história e da cultura e, por outro, voltados para a construção do porvir.

The purpose of this work consists of an application of remote sensing indices such as NDSI and NDSW and geoprocessing analyzes to map an occurrence of water, percolation and moist snow zones, as well as an identification of the characteristic altitudes of each snow zone mapped in the Dundee Island located on the Antarctic Peninsula. For this, a Sentinel-2 image representative of an ablation period corresponding to the end of summer of 2016 was used. As a result an interaction between the NDSI and NDSW indexes allowed a distinction and delimitation of the different zones of snow. As geoprocessing analyzes that involved an overlapping of the land cover classification from the indices, with the altimetric data from the Digital Elevation Model ASTER GDEM, allowed an identification of some bands altimetry characteristic of each zoning. Data base analysis was identified with 17.87% of the total area of the island for the class of moist snow and 81.15% as zone of snow in percolation. However, these results prove the effectiveness of the methodology used based on images of the MSI sensor of the Sentinel-2 satellite in the mapping of the several snow areas in the study area, bringing together geoprocessing tools.
