Filament-motor interactions inside cells play essential roles in many developmental as well as other biological processes. For instance, actin-myosin interactions drive the emergence or closure of ring channel structures during wound healing or dorsal closure. These dynamic protein interactions and the resulting protein organization lead to rich time-series data generated by using fluorescence imaging experiments or by simulating realistic stochastic models. We propose methods based on topological data analysis to track topological features through time in cell biology data consisting of point clouds or binary images. The framework proposed here is based on computing the persistent homology of the data at each time point and on connecting topological features through time using established distance metrics between topological summaries. The methods retain aspects of monomer identity when analyzing significant features in filamentous structure data, and capture the overall closure dynamics when assessing the organization of multiple ring structures through time. Using applications of these techniques to experimental data, we show that the proposed methods can describe features of the emergent dynamics and quantitatively distinguish between control and perturbation experiments.

With the large amounts of available traffic data, it becomes necessary to develop tools that can perform several tasks related to the collected data. These tasks include storing the data in a standard format, filtering the data/flagging suspicious records, processing the data and calculating useful quantitative traffic indices, and finally, visualizing the outcomes. In this paper, a data-driven, yet novel, data-filtering approach was proposed to flag outliers in daily cycling counts at automatic traffic counters (ATCs). The approach was motivated by the spatiotemporal relationship of cycling counts collected at permanent count stations. The proposed approach is flexible because it assumes no prior knowledge about which locations may experience sensor malfunction (i.e., outliers). The approach was tested using a large data set of more than 111,000 daily bicycle volumes collected in 4 years (2016-2019) at more than 60 different permanent count stations in the City of Vancouver, Canada. The approach was validated using complete annual sets of data at four count stations in 2016. Scenarios of undercounting and overcounting were simulated using different percentages of the actual counts. Results of numerical and experimental studies on monitoring and control for optical elements of an electric discharge KrF laser by the method of density-based spatial clustering of applications with noises (DBSCAN) are presented. Different methods of processing digital signals obtained using a position-sensitive detector controlling the position of the optical axis of the laser system are considered. A numerical model of optical system stability is developed based on the DBSCAN method with an additional inclusion of digital signal processing with the use of the cumulative moving average. A technique for correction of controlled mirrors with an accuracy of 60 ± 10 µrad for their return to normal position is proposed and implemented; the alignment time does not exceed 5 min. The removal of volatile methyl siloxanes (VMS) from landfill biogas is crucial for clean energy utilization. VMS are usually found together with aromatic compounds in landfill biogas of which toluene is the major representative. In the present study, two biofilters (BFs) packed with either woodchips and compost (WC) or perlite (PER) were used to study the (co-) removal of octamethyltrisiloxane (L3) and octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) from gas in presence and absence of toluene, used as a representative aromatic compound. The presence of low inlet toluene concentrations (315 ± 19 - 635 ± 80 mg toluene m - 3 ) enhanced the VMS elimination capacity (EC) in both BFs by a factor of 1.8 to 12.6. The highest removal efficiencies for D4 (57.1 ± 1.1 %; EC = 0.12 ± 0.01 gD4 m -3 h - 1 ) and L3 (52.0 ± 0.6 %; EC = 0.23 ± 0.01 gL3 m -3 h - 1 ) were observed in the BF packed with WC. The first section of the BFs (EBRT = 9 min), where toluene was (almost) completely removed, accounted for the majority (87.7 ± 0.6 %) of the total VMS removal. Microbial analysis revealed the impact of VMS and toluene in the activated sludge, showing a clear selection for certain genera in samples influenced by VMS in the presence (X 2 ) or absence (X 1 ) of toluene, such as Pseudomonas (X 1  = 0.91 and X 2  = 12.0 %), Sphingobium (X 1  = 0.09 and X 2  = 4.04 %), Rhodococcus (X 1  = 0.42 and X 2  = 3.91 %), and Bacillus (X 1  = 7.15 and X 2  = 3.84 %). Removing pesticides from biological drinking water filters is challenging due to the difficulty in activating pesticide-degrading bacteria within the filters. Bioaugmented bacteria can alter the filter's microbiome, affecting its performance either positively or negatively, depending on the bacteria used and their interaction with native microbes. We demonstrate that adding specific bacteria strains can effectively remove recalcitrant pesticides, like metaldehyde, yielding compliance to regulatory standards for an extended period. Our experiments revealed that the Sphingobium CMET-H strain was particularly effective, consistently reducing metaldehyde concentrations to levels within regulatory compliance, significantly outperforming Acinetobacter calcoaceticus E1. This success is attributed to the superior acclimation and distribution of the Sphingobium strain within the filter bed, facilitating more efficient interactions with and degradation of the pesticide, even when present at lower population densities compared to Acinetobacter calcoaceticus E1. Furthermore, our study demonstrates that the addition of pesticide-degrading strains significantly impacts the filter's microbiome at various depths, despite these strains making up less than 1% of the total microbial community. The sequence in which these bacteria are introduced influences the system's ability to degrade pesticides effectively. This research shows the potential of carefully selected and dosed bioaugmented bacteria to improve the pesticide removal capabilities of water filtration systems, while also highlighting the dynamics between bioaugmented and native microbial communities. Anaerobically-treated palm oil mill effluent (POME) still has unacceptable properties for water recycling and reuse, with an unpleasant appearance due to the brownish color caused by tannins and phenolic compounds. This study proposes an approach for treating anaerobically-treated POME for water recycling by combining organic precipitation, electrocoagulation (EC), and ion-exchange resin, followed by reverse osmosis (RO) membrane filtration in series. The results indicated that the organic precipitation enhanced the efficiency of EC treatment in reducing the concentrations of tannins, color, and chemical oxygen demand (COD) of the anaerobically-treated POME effluent, with reductions of 95.73%, 96.31%, and 93.96% for tannin, color, and COD, respectively. Moreover, organic precipitation affected the effectiveness of Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ ion removal using ion exchange resin and RO membrane filtration. Without prior organic precipitation, the ion-exchange resin process required a longer contact time, and the RO membrane filtration treatment was hardly effective in removing total dissolved solids (TDS). The common polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane itself is susceptible to membrane fouling, especially biofouling, which is a serious threat. In this study, PVDF membrane was modified with ciprofloxacin (CIP) through co-blending to investigate the filtration properties, bacterial inhibition and fouling resistance. Modified membranes were prepared by adding 0.3 g (M C0.3 ), 0.6 g (M C0.6 ), 0.9 g (M C0.9 ) and 1.2 g (M C1.2 ) CIP per 100 g casting solution. Among these modified membranes, M C0.6 showed the best filtration performances, with the pure water flux stabilized at about 416.67 L/(m 2 ·h) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection of 92.0% at a trans-membrane pressure of 0.1 MPa. The pore size was reduced, the average roughness was reduced to 29.4 nm, the contact angle was lowered to 68.9°, and the hydrophilicity was greatly improved. The width of the inhibition circle produced by M C0.6 was 0.35-0.45 mm, and the modified membrane showed good inhibition of non-specific bacteria and algal removal during urban river water filtration. The rejection of BSA was increased by 16.32% compared to the base membrane and the adsorption rate for BSA was reduced by 68.45%. In addition, the removal of conventional pollutants in urban river water by the modified membranes for was also improved. Compared with that of the base membrane, the removal of TN, NH 3 -N, TP and COD by M C0.6 was increased by 10.58%, 12.45%, 15.44% and 13.53%. Organic materials such as bark and biochar can be effective filter materials to treat stormwater. However, the efficiency of such filters in retaining microplastics (MPs) - an emerging stormwater pollutant - has not been sufficiently studied. This study investigated the removal and transport of a mixture of MPs commonly associated with stormwater. Different MP types (polyamide, polyethylene, polypropylene, and polystyrene) were mixed into the initial 2 cm material of horizontal bark and biochar filters of 25, 50, and 100 cm lengths. The MP types consisted of spherical and fragmented shapes in size ranges of 25-900 μm. The filters were subjected to a water flow of 5 mL/min for one week, and the total effluents were analyzed for MPs by μFTIR imaging. To gain a deeper insight, one 100 cm bark filter replica was split into 10 cm segments, and MPs in each segment were extracted and counted. The results showed that MPs were retained effectively, >97%, in all biochar and bark filters. However, MPs were detected in all effluents regardless of filter length. Effluent concentrations of 5-750 MP/L and 35-355 MP/L were measured in bark and biochar effluents, respectively, with >91% of the MP counts consisting of small-sized (25 μm) polyamide spherical particles. Combining all data, a decrease in average MP concentration was noticed with longer filters, likely attributed to channeling in a 25 and 50-cm filter. The analyses of MPs in the bark media revealed that most MPs were retained in the 0-10 cm segment but that some MPs were transported further, with 19% of polyamide retained in the 80-90 cm segment. Dyes are the most ubiquitous organic pollutants in industrial effluents. They are highly toxic to both plants and animals; thus, their removal is paramount to the sustainability of ecosystem. However, they have shown resistance to photolysis and various biological, physical, and chemical wastewater remediation processes. Membrane removal technology has been vital for the filtration/separation of the dyes. In comparison to polymeric membranes, inorganic and mixed matrix (MM) membranes have shown potentials to the removal of dyes. The inorganic and MM membranes are particularly effective due to their high porosity, enhanced stability, improved permeability, higher enhanced selectivity and good stability and resistance to harsh chemical and thermal conditions. They have shown prospects in filtration/separation, adsorption, and catalytic degradation of the dyes. This review highlighted the advantages of the inorganic and MM membranes for the various removal techniques for the treatments of the dyes. Methods for the membranes production have been reviewed. Their application for the filtration/separation and adsorption have been critically analyzed. Their application as support for advanced oxidation processes such as persulfate, photo-Fenton and photocatalytic degradations have been highlighted. The mechanisms underscoring the efficiency of the processes have been cited. Advances in upstream production of biologics-particularly intensified fed-batch processes beyond 10% cell solids-have severely strained harvest operations, especially depth filtration. Bioreactors containing high amounts of cell debris (more than 40% particles <10 µm in diameter) are increasingly common and drive the need for more robust depth filtration processes, while accelerated timelines emphasize the need for predictive tools to accelerate development. Both needs are constrained by the current limited mechanistic understanding of the harvest filter-feedstream system. Historically, process development relied on screening scale-down depth filter devices and conditions to define throughput before fouling, indicated by increasing differential pressure and/or particle breakthrough (measured via turbidity). This approach is straightforward, but resource-intensive, and its results are inherently limited by the variability of the feedstream. Semi-empirical models have been developed from first principles to describe various mechanisms of filter fouling, that is, pore constriction, pore blocking, and/or surface deposit. Fitting these models to experimental data can assist in identifying the dominant fouling mechanism. Still, this approach sees limited application to guide process development, as it is descriptive, not predictive. To address this gap, we developed a hybrid modeling approach. Leveraging historical bench scale filtration process data, we built a partial least squares regression model to predict particle breakthrough from filter and feedstream attributes, and leveraged the model to demonstrate prediction of filter performance a priori. The fouling models are used to interpret and provide physical meaning to these computational models. This hybrid approach-combining the mechanistic insights of fouling models and the predictive capability of computational models-was used to establish a robust platform strategy for depth filtration of Chinese hamster ovary cell cultures. Particulate contamination, the unintentional presence of particles in parenteral fluids, is associated with potential risks such as phlebitis and thrombophlebitis. Recent guidelines recommend the use of filter needles when withdrawing parenteral fluid from vials with a rubber stopper. However, the literature is limited and lacks clarity regarding the advantages of filter needles over conventional needles. The aim of this study was to assess the compliance of parenteral fluids regarding particulate contamination after withdrawing fluid using both conventional needles and filter needles, following the guidelines of European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.) and United States Pharmacopoeia (USP). Visible particles were counted through visual inspection and sub-visible particles were quantified utilizing the light obscuration particle count test. Particle counts for both types of needles were compared to Ph. Eur. and USP standards and differences in particle contamination were assessed using a Mann-Whitney U test. Both types of needles demonstrated compliance with Ph. Eur. and USP standards regarding particulate contamination of visible and sub-visible particles. However, filter needles exhibited a significantly higher particle count for particles with a size of ≥25 µm compared to conventional needles (p = 0.0029). In conclusion, both types of needles demonstrate suitability for aspirating fluid from vials featuring rubber stoppers regarding particulate contamination. Small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) are proven to hold great promise for diverse therapeutic and diagnostic applications. However, batch preparation of sEVs with high purity and bioactivity is a prerequisite for their clinical translations. Herein, we present an electric field assisted tangential flow filtration system (E-TFF), which integrates size-based filtration with electrophoretic migration-based separation to synergistically achieve the isolation of high-quality sEVs from cell culture medium. Compared with the gold-standard ultracentrifugation (UC) method, E-TFF not only improved the purity of sEVs by 1.4 times but also increased the yield of sEVs by 15.8 times. Additionally, the entire isolation process of E-TFF was completed within 1 h, about one-fourth of the time taken by UC. Furthermore, the biological activity of sEVs isolated by E-TFF was verified by co-incubation of sEVs derived from human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUCMSCs) with HT22 mouse hippocampal neuronal cells exposed to amyloid-β (Aβ). The results demonstrated that the sEVs isolated by E-TFF exhibited a significant neuroprotective effect. Overall, the E-TFF platform provides a promising and robust strategy for batch preparation of high-quality sEVs, opening up a broad range of opportunities for cell-free therapy and precision medicine.

Low carbon aldehydes and ketones are typical substances harmful to human body produced during cigarette smoking. Their contents in cigarette smoke are important indicators for evaluating its toxicity and the filtration effect of cigarette filter tips, which provides important guidance for its rational design. In this work, MXene membrane with unique lamellar structure was synthesized and loaded onto glass fiber filters to achieve effective enrichment of low carbon aldehydes and ketones. Compared to commercial Cambridge filters, the MXene-loaded filters exhibited higher extraction efficiency towards low-carbon aldehydes and ketones, making viable the detection of butyraldehyde, which was not detected by that enriched with Cambridge filters. Therefore, a MXene-based membrane enrichment-HPLC method was developed for the determination of low-carbon aldehydes and ketones in cigarette smoke with detection limits ranging from 0.133 μg/mL to 0.285 μg/mL. The applicability of the method was verified by analyzing three different types of filter cigarettes with the concentration in the range of 0.5-140 μg/branch for all the analytes, which were in good agreement with the manufacturer's results. Rapid population growth intensifies water scarcity, highlighting the importance of treatment technologies such as reverse osmosis and membrane filtration to ensure safe drinking water and preserve resources. The use of polystyrene as a filter for polluted water is valuable due to its porous surface, efficiently retaining impurities. The system, a tubular reactor with a mixed polystyrene bed, underwent evaluations with varying particle sizes, flow rates and times, operating in dead-end mode and series system without recirculation with theoretical residence times between 180 and 360 min. The study, divided into two phases, optimized the system in the first phase, characterizing the filter bed and carrying out maintenance for 360 min at 0.5 L/min. Phase two evaluated the performance of the reactor in treating wastewater with flow rates of 0.5 and 1 L/min for 180 min. Under the best conditions of Phase I, 55% of Escherichia coli and turbidity were deactivated, not meeting potability standards. In Phase II, there was efficiency in the removal of several parameters, such as chemical oxygen demand (78.26%), total phosphorus (75%), nitrate (73.42%), ammonia (73.13%), nitrite (69.33%), potassium (70.83%), and sodium (68.75%). Development of low-cost and reliable reactors demanding minimal supervision is a need-of-the-hour for sewage treatment in rural areas. This study explores the performance of a multi-stage sponge-filled trickling filter (SPTF) for sewage treatment, employing polyethylene (PE) and polyurethane (PU) media. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) and nitrogen transformation were evaluated at hydraulic loading rates (HLRs) ranging from 2 to 6 m/d using synthetic sewage as influent. At influent COD of ∼350 mg/L, PU-SPTF and PE-SPTF achieved a COD removal of 97% across all HLRs with most of the removal occurring in the first segments. Operation of PE-SPTF at an HLR of 6 m/d caused substantial wash-out of biomass, while PU-SPTF retained biomass and achieved effluent COD < 10 mg/L even at HLR of 8-10 m/d. The maximum Total Nitrogen removal by PE-SPTF and PU-SPTF reactors was 93.56 ± 1.36 and 92.24 ± 0.66%, respectively, at an HLR of 6 m/d. Simultaneous removal of ammonia and nitrate was observed at all the HLRs in the first segment of both SPTFs indicating ANAMMOX activity. Currently, the most effective way to improve the anti-fouling performance of water treatment separation membrane is to enhance the hydrophilicity of the membrane surface, but it can still cause contamination, leading to the occurrence of flux reduction. The construction of a strong hydration layer to resist wastewater contamination is still a challenging task. In this study, a defect-free hydration layer barrier was achieved by grafting chitosan polysaccharide derivatives (CS-SDAEM) on the membrane, which achieved in effective fouling prevention and low flux decline rate. A layer of tannic acid-coated carbon nanotubes (TA@CNTs) has been uniformly deposited on the commercial PVDF membrane so that the surface was rich in -COOH groups, providing sufficient reaction sites. These reactive groups facilitate the grafting of amphiphilic polymers onto the membrane. This modification strategy achieved in enhancing the antifouling performance. The modified membrane achieved low contamination rate with DR of 16.9 % for wastewater filtration, and the flux recovery rate was above 95 % with PWF of 1100 (L·m -2 ·h -1 ). Preparing bio-based air filtration membrane through green electrospinning strategy is a vital approach to alleviating environmental and energy crises. However, the development of related biomaterials and method for regulating membrane structure are still lacking. In this study, ethyl cellulose (EC) bimodal nanofibrous membrane was prepared by electrospinning using ethanol and water as solvents to achieve high-performance air filtration. A new strategy for bimodal fiber molding based on molecular weight modulation was proposed. The EC polymer chains with medium molecular weights were subject to the highest degree of inhomogeneity of solvent intrusion, and there were significant differences in viscous forces "microscopically", leading to the formation of bimodal structure by inhomogeneous stretching of the jet. The well-defined bimodal structure endowed EC membrane with excellent air filtration performance. The filtration efficiency for PM 0.3 , pressure drop, quality factor were 99.11 %, 42.2 Pa, and 0.112 Pa -1 , respectively. Compared to the commonly used zein, EC cost just 12.77 %, and its solution had a 50 % longer shelf life, making it a more desirable biomaterial. Activated carbon filters are used for the removal of hazardous gases from the air. This research applied vibrational spectroscopy methods, including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy to characterize hydrogen sulfide adsorption on impregnated carbon materials with metals having reactivity toward hydrogen sulfide. The Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy results demonstrated the formation of a new chemical bond between the impregnating metals and the sulfur, indicated by the appearance of a new band at 618 cm -1 . The Raman spectra results showed that for the copper-impregnated activated carbon with the highest hydrogen sulfide adsorption capacity, a new vibrational band at 475 cm -1 evolved, indicating a copper-sulfur bond. In addition, upshifts in the carbon D sub-bands were observed after efficient hydrogen sulfide adsorption, along with a larger area of the approximately 1500 cm -1 band. Therefore, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy combination can potentially indicate H 2 S adsorption on impregnated activated carbon filters.

Membrane fouling by monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) is one of the main challenges in virus-filtration processes. Previous publications attributed membrane fouling to the presence of mAb aggregates in the solution, which block the membrane pores. This fouling mechanism can be solved by a prefilter; however, it was shown that there are mAbs that severely foul the membranes (reduce permeability by 90% and more) even after prefiltering the aggregates, while other mAbs foul the membrane weakly (reduce permeability by ~10% and less). Unfortunately, the differences between the fouling- and the nonfouling mAbs have never been convincingly explained. To get a deeper insight on these differences, we measured the fouling of chemically modified Isoprene-Styrene-4-vinylpyridine (ISV) membranes (TeraPore Technologies) by 8 mAbs exhibiting different hydrophobicity and charge. The results show that mAb solutions with low concentration of aggregates foul ISV membranes via an adsorptive mechanism, and the adsorption is driven mainly by hydrophobic forces between the mAb and the membrane. The charge of the mAbs plays a secondary role in fouling. The transformation of salvianolic acid B brought on by heat treatment recovery of ethanol eluent, which is a difficult problem in pharmaceutical technology, affects the purity of raw material when the medicinal raw material salvianolic acid B is purified by resin. Ultrasonic-assisted nanofiltration separation (UANS) was first employed to improve efficiency of resource utilization by regulating rejection and separating salvianolic acid B and rosmarinic acid from organic pharmaceutical wastewater. The rejection was related to three variables: ultrasonic power, pH, and ethanol concentration. But there were differences in the effects of variables on the rejections of salvianolic acid B and rosmarinic acid. The rejections of rosmarinic acid and salvianolic acid B showed a decreasing trend with an increase in ultrasonic power or a decrease in pH; however, when the concentration of ethanol was increased from 5 % to 35 %, the salvianolic acid B rejection increased from 84.96 % to 96.60 % and the rosmarinic acid rejection decreased from 35.09 % to 17.51 %. On the basis of response surface methodology (RSM), the optimal UANS parameters for solution conditions involving different ethanol concentrations are as follows: 10 % ethanol solution (ultrasonic power 500 W and pH 6.15), 20 % ethanol solution (ultrasonic power 500 W and pH 6.54), and 30 % ethanol solution (ultrasonic power 460 W and pH 6.34). The molecular proportions of salvianolic acid B were 10.75 %, 7.13 %, and 8.27 % in 10 %, 20 %, and 30 % ethanol wastewater, while the molecular proportions of rosmarinic acid were 40.52 %, 33.83 %, and 69.87 %, respectively. And the recoveries of salvianolic acid B in 10 %, 20 %, and 30 % ethanol wastewater were 93.56 %, 95.04 %, and 97.30 %, respectively, while the recoveries of rosmarinic acid were 3.19 %, 2.27 %, and 0.56 %. The molecular proportion and the rejection are correlated exponentially. In comparison with conventional nanofiltration separation (CNS), UANS is able to resolve the conflict between rosmarinic acid and salvianolic acid B in pharmaceutical wastewater, as well as enhance resource recycling and separation efficiency to prevent pollution of the environment from pharmaceutical wastewater. Experiments using UANS at different power intensities suggest that the ultrasonic at a power intensity of 46-50 W/L and the power density of 0.92-1.00 W/cm 2 may resolve the separation conflict between rosmarinic acid and salvianolic acid B. The coating of filter media with silver is typically achieved by chemical deposition and aerosol processes. Whilst useful, such approaches struggle to provide uniform coating and are prone to blockage. To address these issues, an in situ method for coating glass fibers is presented via the dopamine-mediated electroless metallization method, yielding filters with low air resistance and excellent antibacterial performance. It is found that the filtration efficiency of the filters is between 94 and 97% and much higher than that of silver-coated filters produced using conventional dipping methods (85%). Additionally, measured pressure drops ranged between 100 and 150 Pa, which are lower than those associated with dipped filters (171.1 Pa). Survival rates of Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis bacteria exposed to the filters decreased to 0 and 15.7%±1.49, respectively after 2 h, with no bacteria surviving after 6 h. In contrast, survival rates of E. coli and B. subtilis bacteria on the uncoated filters are 92.5% and 89.5% after 6 h. Taken together, these results confirm that the in situ deposition of silver onto fiber surfaces effectively reduces pore clogging, yielding low air resistance filters that can be applied for microbial filtration and inhibition in a range of environments., (© 2024 The Authors. This study introduces an innovative approach for enhancing oil-water emulsion separation using a polyethersulfone (PES) membrane embedded with a nanocomposite of graphene oxide (GO) and silver oxide (AgO). The composite membrane, incorporating PES and polyvinyl chloride (PVC), demonstrates improved hydrophilicity, structural integrity and resistance to fouling. Physicochemical characterization confirms successful integration of GO and AgO, leading to increased tensile strength, porosity and hydrophilicity. Filtration tests reveal substantial improvements in separating various oils from contaminated wastewater, with the composite membrane exhibiting superior efficiency and reusability compared to pristine PES membranes. Membrane fouling is the major factor that restricts the furtherly widespread use of membrane bioreactor (MBR). As a new generation of MBR, biofilm membrane bioreactor (BF-MBR) demonstrates high treatment efficiency and low sludge growth rate, however the filtration performance improvement and membrane fouling control are still the challenges for its further development. This work investigated the filtration performance using resistance in series model and membrane fouling control via threshold flux for BF-MBR. At first, the flux behavior and filtration resistance under various operating conditions, including agitation speed, membrane and TMP, were explored by resistance in series model. Because of the desirable anti-fouling capacity, UP100 and UP030 had the high threshold flux (100 and 90 L m -2 h -1 ) and low irreversible fouling resistance (1 and 1.3 × 10 -10  m -1 ). Higher shear stress produced by higher agitation speed could reduce membrane fouling, while greatly promote the threshold flux (138 L m -2 h -1 ) and membrane cleaning efficiency (96%). Moreover, increasing shear stress or selecting membrane with large pore size could decrease the fouling rate and raise the threshold flux. As for TMP, high TMP reduced the removal rate for organic and nutrient, and enhanced the irreversible fouling. Besides, the aerobic-BF-MBR (101 L m -2 h -1 and 1.3 × 10 -10  m -1 ) with lower foulant concentration had a better filtration performance than anoxic-BF-MBR (90 L m -2 h -1 and 1.5 × 10 -10  m -1 ). Additionally, the long-term tests with 10 cycles were conducted to evaluate the industrial application value of BF-MBR (45-58 L m -2 h -1 ). Researches on the advanced nitrogen (N) removal of municipal tailwater always overlooked the value of refractory degradable dissolved organic matter (R-DOM). In this study, a novel electric field coupled iron‑carbon biofilter (E-ICBF) was utilized to explore the performance and microbial changes with polyethylene glycol (PEG) as the representative R-DOM. Results demonstrated that the removal efficiencies of E-ICBF for nitrate nitrogen (NO 3 - -N), ammonia nitrogen (NH 4 + -N), and total nitrogen (TN) improved by 28.76 %, 12.96 %, and 28.45 %, compared to quartz sand biofilter (SBF). Moreover, removal efficiencies of NO 3 - -N and TN in E-ICBF with R-DOM went up by 12.11 % and 14.02 % compared to methanol. Additionally, both PEG and the electric field reduced the microbial richness and diversity. However, PEG promoted the increase of denitrifying bacteria abundance including unclassified&#95;f&#95;Comamonadaceae, Thauera, and unclassified&#95;f&#95;Gallionellaceae. The electric field improved the abundances of genes related to N removal (hao, nasC, nasA, nifH, nifD, nifK) and PEG further enhanced the effect. The abundances of key enzymes [EC:1.7.5.1], [EC:1.7.2.1], [EC:1.7.2.4], and [EC:1.7.2.5] decreased due to the addition of PEG and the electric field mitigated the negative influence. Biotrickling filter (BTF) is often used for purification of waste gas from swine houses, with vital information still needed regarding interaction effects among multiple gas pollutants removal and also the formation of byproducts especially nitrous oxide (N 2 O, a strong greenhouse gas) due to the relative high NH 3 concentration level compared to other gases. In this study, gas removal and N 2 O production were compared between two BTFs, where the inlet gas of BTF-1 contained NH 3 and H 2 S while p-cresol was additionally supplied to BTF-2. At inlet load (IL) between 3.67 and 18.91 g m -3 h -1 , removal efficiencies of NH 3 exceeded 95% for both BTFs. As alternative strategy, adding thiosulfate improved H 2 S removal. Interestingly, presence of p-cresol to some extent promoted H 2 S removal at IL of 0.56 g m -3 h -1 possibly due to effect on pH value of circulating solution. Similar to NH 3 , removal efficiencies of p-cresol were higher than 95% at an average IL of 2.98 g m -3 h -1 . Gas residence time, pH of circulating solution and inlet loading were identified as key factors affecting BTF performance, but the response of individual gas compound to these factors was not consistent. Overall, p-cresol enhanced N 2 O generation although the effects were not always significant. High-throughput sequencing results showed that Proteobacteria accounted for the largest proportion of relative abundance and BTF-2 had much richer microbial diversity compared to BTF-1. Thermomonas, Comamonas, Rhodanobacter and other bacterial genus capable of denitrification were detected in both BTFs, and their corresponding abundances in BTF-2 (10.9%, 8.7% and 5.2%) were all greater than those in BTF-1 (0.4%, 0.3% and 2.0%), indicating that more denitrification may occur within BTF-2 and higher N 2 O could have been generated. In this research, the interactions of two azo dyes, Methyl Orange (MO) and Eriochrome Black T (EBT), with dissolved organic matter (DOM) in surface water were studied, emphasizing their removal using nano-filtration membranes (NF-270 and NF-90). High-Performance Size Exclusion Chromatography (HPSEC) findings indicated that the dyes' molecular weight in deionized (DI) water ranged from 500 to 15k Dalton (Da), adjusting peak intensities with Jingmi River (JM) water Beijing. Notably, when dyes were diluted in JM water, ultraviolet (UV 533 & 466 , and UV 254 ), together with total organic carbon (TOC) parameters, revealed color removal rates of 99.49% (EBT), 94.2% (MO), 87.6% DOM removal, and 86% TOC removal for NF-90. The NF-90 membrane demonstrated a 75% flux decline for 50 mL permeate volume due to its finer pore structure and higher rejection effectiveness. In contrast, the NF-270 membrane showed a 60% decline in flux under the same conditions. Attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) analysis of dye-treated membranes in JM water revealed that the NF-270 showed a CC bond peak at 1660 cm -1 across various samples, while analyzing NF-90, the peaks at 1400 cm -1 , 1040 cm -1 , 750 cm -1 , and 620 cm -1 disappeared for composite sample removal. The hydrophobicity of each membrane is measured by the contact angle (CA), which identified that initial CAs for NF-270 and NF-90 were 46 0 and 70 0 , respectively, that were rapidly declined but stabilized after a few seconds of processing. Thermophilic semi-continuous composting (TSC) is effective for kitchen waste (KW) treatment, but large amounts of NH 3 -rich odorous gas are generated. This study proposes a TSC-biofiltration (BF) two-stage process. Compost from the front-end TSC was used as the packing material in the BF to remove NH 3 from the exhaust gas. The BF process was effective in removing up to 83.7 % of NH 3 , and the NH 3 content was reduced to < 8 ppm. Seven days of BF improved the quality of the product from TSC by enhancing the germination index to 134.6 %, 36.5 % higher than that in the aerated-only group. Microbial community analysis revealed rapid proliferation and eventual dominance in the BF of members related to compost maturation and the nitrogen cycle from Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Bacteroidetes. Lentiviral vectors (LVs) are used in advanced therapies to transduce recipient cells for long term gene expression for therapeutic benefit. The vector is commonly pseudotyped with alternative viral envelope proteins to improve tropism and is selected for enhanced functional titers. However, their impact on manufacturing and the success of individual bioprocessing unit operations is seldom demonstrated. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study on the processability of different Lentiviral vector pseudotypes. In this work, we compared three envelope proteins commonly pseudotyped with LVs across manufacturing conditions such as temperature and pump flow and across steps common to downstream processing. We have shown impact of filter membrane chemistry on vector recoveries with differing envelopes during clarification and observed complete vector robustness in high shear manufacturing environments using ultra scale-down technologies. The impact of shear during membrane filtration in a tangential flow filtration-mimic showed the benefit of employing higher shear rates, than currently used in LV production, to increase vector recovery. Likewise, optimized anion exchange chromatography purification in monolith format was determined. The results contradict a common perception that lentiviral vectors are susceptible to shear or high salt concentration (up to 1.7 M). As global effects of water scarcity raise concerns and environmental regulations evolve, contemporary wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) face the challenge of effectively removing a diverse range of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) from municipal effluents. This study focuses on the assessment of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), specifically UV-C/H 2 O 2 and UV-C/Chlorine, for the removal of 14 target CECs in municipal secondary effluent (MSE, spiked with 10 μg L -1 of each CEC) or in the subsequent MSE nanofiltration retentate (NF R , no spiking). Phototreatments were carried out in continuous mode operation, with a hydraulic retention time of 3.4 min, using a tube-in-tube membrane photoreactor. For both wastewater matrices, UV-C photolysis (3.3 kJ L -1 ) exhibited high efficacy in removing CECs susceptible to photolysis, although lower treatment performance was observed for NF R . In MSE, adding 10 mg L -1 of H 2 O 2 or Cl 2 enhanced treatment efficiency, with UV-C/H 2 O 2 outperforming UV-C/Chlorine. Both UV-C/AOPs eliminated the chronic toxicity of MSE toward Chlorella vulgaris. In the NF R , not only was the degradation of target CECs diminished, but chronic toxicity to C. vulgaris persisted after both UV-C/AOPs, with UV-C/Chlorine increasing toxicity due to potential toxic by-products. Nanofiltration permeate (NF P ) exhibited low CECs and microbial content. A single chlorine addition effectively controlled Escherichia coli regrowth for 3 days, proving NF P potential for safe reuse in crop irrigation (<1 CFU/100 mL for E. coli; <1 mg L -1 for free chlorine). The significant increase in product titers, coupled with the growing focus on continuous bioprocessing, has renewed interest in using precipitation as a low-cost alternative to Protein A chromatography for the primary capture of monoclonal antibody (mAb) products. In this work, a commercially relevant mAb was purified from clarified cell culture fluid using a tubular flow precipitation reactor with dewatering and washing provided by tangential flow microfiltration. The particle morphology was evaluated using an inline high-resolution optical probe, providing quantitative data on the particle size distribution throughout the precipitation process. Data were obtained in both a lab-built 2-stage countercurrent washing system and a commercial countercurrent contacting skid that provided 4 stages of continuous washing. The processes were operated continuously for 2 h with overall mAb yield of 92 ± 3% and DNA removal of nearly 3 logs in the 4-stage system. The high DNA clearance was achieved by selective redissolution of the mAb using a low pH acetate buffer. Host cell protein clearance was 0.59 ± 0.08 logs, comparable to that based on model predictions. This study addresses the urgent issue of water pollution caused by iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) ions. It introduces an innovative approach using graphene oxide (GO) and GO-decorated polyethersulphone (PES) membranes to efficiently remove these ions from contaminated water. The process involves integrating GO into PES membranes to enhance their adsorption capacity. Characterization techniques, including scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared, and contact angle measurements, were used to assess structural and surface properties. The modified membranes demonstrated significantly improved adsorption compared to pristine PES. Notably, they achieved over 94% removal of Mn 2+ and 93.6% of Fe 2+ in the first filtration cycle for water with an initial concentration of 100 ppm. Continuous filtration for up to five cycles maintained removal rates above 60%. This research advances water purification materials, offering a promising solution for heavy metal ion removal. This research shows the detailed comparison of Raman and near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy as Process Analytical Technology tools for the real-time monitoring of a protein purification process. A comprehensive investigation of the application and model development of Raman and NIR spectroscopy was carried out for the real-time monitoring of a process-related impurity, imidazole, during the tangential flow filtration of Receptor-Binding Domain (RBD) of the SARS-CoV-2 Spike protein. The fast development of Raman and NIR spectroscopy-based calibration models was achieved using offline calibration data, resulting in low calibration and cross-validation errors. Raman model had an RMSEC of 1.53 mM, and an RMSECV of 1.78 mM, and the NIR model had an RMSEC of 1.87 mM and an RMSECV of 2.97 mM. Furthermore, Raman models had good robustness when applied in an inline measurement system, but on the contrary NIR spectroscopy was sensitive to the changes in the measurement environment. By utilizing the developed models, inline Raman and NIR spectroscopy were successfully applied for the real-time monitoring of a process-related impurity during the membrane filtration of a recombinant protein. Biofiltration systems harbored and disseminated antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), when confronting antibiotic-contained wastewater. Biochar, a widely used environmental remediation material, can mitigate antibiotic stress on adjoining microbes by lowering the availability of sorbed antibiotics, and enhance the attachment of denitrifiers. Herein, bench-scale biofiltration systems, packed with commercial biochars, were established to explore the pivotal drivers affecting ARG emergence. Results showed that biofiltration columns, achieving higher TN removal and denitrification capacity, showed a significant decrease in ARG accumulation (p < 0.05). The relative abundance of ARGs (0.014 ± 0.0008) in the attached biofilms decreased to 1/5-folds of that in the control group (0.065 ± 0.004). Functional analysis indicated ARGs' accumulation was less attributed to ARG activation or horizontal gene transfer (HGT) driven by sorbed antibiotics. Most denitrifiers, like Bradyrhizobium, Geothrix, etc., were found to be enriched and host ARGs. Nitrosative stress from deficient denitrification was demonstrated to be the dominant driver for affecting ARG accumulation and dissemination. Metagenomic and metaproteomic analysis revealed that nitrosative stress promoted the conjugative HGT of ARGs mainly via increasing the transmembrane permeability and enhancing the amino acid transport and metabolism, such as cysteine, methionine, and valine metabolism. Using respiratory protective equipment is one of the relevant preventive measures for infectious diseases, including COVID-19, and for various occupational respiratory hazards. Because experienced discomfort may result in a decrease in the utilization of respirators, it is important to enhance the material properties to resolve suboptimal usage. We combined several technologies to produce a filtration material that met requirements set by a cross-disciplinary interview study on the usability of protective equipment. Improved breathability, environmental sustainability, and comfort of the material were achieved by electrospinning poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) nanofibers on a thin foam-formed fabric from regenerated cellulose fibers. The high filtration efficiency of sub-micron-sized diethylhexyl sebacate (DEHS) aerosol particles resulted from the small mean segment length of 0.35 μm of the nanofiber network. For a particle diameter of 0.6 μm, the filtration efficiency of a single PEO layer varied in the range of 80-97 % depending on the coat weight. The corresponding pressure drop had the level of 20-90 Pa for the airflow velocity of 5.3 cm/s. Using a multilayer structure, a very high filtration efficiency of 99.5 % was obtained with only a slightly higher pressure drop. Oyster reefs near estuarine channels have experienced substantial mortality over the last decades, primarily due to bank erosion, potentially exacerbated by boat activity. Using aerial imagery, we measured bank erosion along the Intracoastal Waterway and its main tributaries in the Guana-Tolomato-Matanzas estuary, finding that erosion outweighs progradation. This notably threatens oyster reefs and their filtration capabilities. By modeling the impact of bank erosion on oyster habitats and filtration using hydrodynamic, water quality, and particle tracking models, we observed a 12% filtration reduction due to reef mortality. Erosion results in an exponential decrease in reef area and filtration services, due to the removal of channel-adjacent reefs, which play a critical role in water filtration. If current erosion rates continue, simulations suggest a potential 20% filtration reduction over 100 years, potentially worsening water quality. The demand for new products derived from agro-industrial residues has increased recently. Furthermore, vinasse, a wastewater from ethanol production, needs treatment to be reused in the sugarcane industry, reducing industrial water consumption. This study performed vinasse filtration with charcoal from industrial sugarcane residues and used filtered molasses dilution in ethanolic fermentation. There were five treatments in randomized blocks with three repetitions. The treatments included deionized water and natural vinasse as positive and negative controls, respectively, and filtered vinasse from charcoal made from bamboo, sugarcane bagasse, and straw. Hence, fermentation for ethanol production was performed. Compared with natural vinasse, filtered vinasse with all types of charcoal showed lower soluble solids, total residual reducing sugars, higher ethanol concentrations, and greater fermentative efficiency. Filtered vinasse from bagasse and straw charcoals had efficiencies of 81.14% and 77.98%, respectively, in terms of ethanol production, which are close to those of deionized water (81.49%). In a hypothetical industry, vinasse charcoal filtration and charcoal regeneration should prevent 84.12% of water consumption from environmental resources. Wastewater reuse is one of the crucial water resources in Egypt due to the ongoing need to increase water resources and close the supply-demand gap. In this study, a new coagulant has been investigated before sand filters as an advanced wastewater treatment method. The sand filter pilot was run at a hydraulic loading rate of 0.75 m/h and two different dosages of three coagulants (Alum, FeCl 3 , and Ferrate VI) were selected using the jar tests. The sand filter without coagulant removed 12% of BOD 5 and 70% of turbidity. Applying in-line coagulation before the sand filter provided effluents with better quality, especially for turbidity, organics, and microorganisms. Ferrate provided the highest removal of turbidity (90%) and BOD 5 (93%) at very low dosages and lower costs compared with other coagulants, however, it adversely impacted both conductivity and dissolved solids. A significant effect on reducing bacteria was obtained with 40.0 mg/L of alum. The treatment of raw foul air that could escape to the atmosphere from the head space of the incoming wastewater sewer lines into a Southern California Water Resource Recovery Facility was evaluated by using a 1/20th scale pilot unit consisting of three different granular activated carbon filter technologies, operating side by side, under similar operating conditions, each having an average 3.8-s contact time. The three activated carbon filters contained each 0.07 m 3 of coconut, coal, and coconut mixed with permanganate media. The foul air entering the granular activated carbon filters contained 82% to 83% relative humidity. No moisture removal mechanism was used prior to treatment. The removal of six different odor characters from eight chemical odorants present in the foul air were assessed. These were rotten egg (hydrogen sulfide), rotten vegetables (methyl mercaptan), canned corn (dimethyl sulfide), rotten garlic (dimethyl disulfide), earthy/musty (2-methyl isoborneol and 2-isopropyl 3-methoxy pyrazine), and fecal (skatole and indole). This is the first time a study evaluates the removal of specific odors by simultaneously employing sensory analyses using the odor profile method, which defines the different odor characters and intensities, together with chemical analyses of the odorants causing these odors. The results show that the three granular activated carbon filters, before hydrogen sulfide breakthrough, provided significant improvement in odor intensity and odorant removal. Breakthrough was reached after 57 days for the coconut mixed with permanganate, 107 days for the coconut, and 129 days for the coal granular activated carbon filter. Breakthrough (the critical saturation point of the activated carbon media) was considered reached when the hydrogen sulfide percentage removal diminished to 90% and continued downward. The coconut mixed with permanganate granular activated carbon filter provided the best treatment among the media tested, achieving very good reduction of odorants, as measured by chemical analyses, and reasonable removal of odor intensities, as measured by the odor profile method. The coconut mixed with permanganate granular activated carbon is recommended for short-term odor control systems at sewer networks or emergency plant maintenance situations given its shorter time to breakthrough compared with the other granular activated carbons. The coal and coconut granular activated carbon filters are generally used as the last stage of an odor treatment system. Because of the observed poor to average performance in removing odorants other than hydrogen sulfide, the treatment stage(s) prior to the use of these granulated activated carbons should provide a good methyl mercaptan removal of at least 90% in order to avoid the formation of dimethyl disulfide, which, in the presence of moisture in the carbon filter, emit the characteristic rotten garlic odor. The differences observed between the performances based on odorant removal by chemical analysis compared with those based on sensorial analyses by the odor profile method indicate that both analyses are required to understand more fully the odor dynamics. Although the isolation and counting of small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) are essential steps in sEV research, an integrated method with scalability and efficiency has not been developed. Here, we present a scalable and ready-to-use extracellular vesicle (EV) isolation and counting system (EVics) that simultaneously allows isolation and counting in one system. This novel system consists of (i) EVi, a simultaneous tandem tangential flow filtration (TFF)-based EV isolation component by applying two different pore-size TFF filters, and (ii) EVc, an EV counting component using light scattering that captures a large field-of-view (FOV). EVi efficiently isolated 50-200 nm-size sEVs from 15 µL to 2 L samples, outperforming the current state-of-the-art devices in purity and speed. EVc with a large FOV efficiently counted isolated sEVs. EVics enabled early observations of sEV secretion in various cell lines and reduced the cost of evaluating the inhibitory effect of sEV inhibitors by 20-fold. Using EVics, sEVs concentrations and sEV PD-L1 were monitored in a 23-day cancer mouse model, and 160 clinical samples were prepared and successfully applied to diagnosis. Developing eco-friendly, cost-effective, and efficient methods for treating water pollutants has become paramount in recent years. Biopolyelectrolytes (BPEs), comprising natural polymers like chitosan, alginate, and cellulose, have emerged as versatile tools in this pursuit. This review offers a comprehensive exploration of the diverse roles of BPEs in combating water contamination, spanning coagulation-flocculation, adsorption, and filtration membrane techniques. With ionizable functional groups, BPEs exhibit promise in removing heavy metals, dyes, and various pollutants. Studies showcase the efficacy of chitosan, alginate, and pectin in achieving notable removal rates. BPEs efficiently adsorb heavy metal ions, dyes, and pesticides, leveraging robust adsorption capacity and exceptional mechanical properties. Furthermore, BPEs play a pivotal role in filtration membrane techniques, offering efficient separation systems with high removal rates and low energy consumption. Despite challenges related to production costs and property variability, their environmentally friendly, biodegradable, renewable, and recyclable nature positions BPEs as compelling candidates for sustainable water treatment technologies. Electrochemical filtration can not only enrich low concentrations of pollutants but also produce reactive oxygen species to interact with toxic pollutants with the assistance of a power supply, making it an effective strategy for drinking water purification. In addition, the application of electrochemical filtration facilitates the reduction of pretreatment procedures and the use of chemicals, which has outstanding potential for maximizing process simplicity and reducing operating costs, enabling the production of safe drinking water in smaller installations. In recent years, the research on electrochemical filtration has gradually increased, but there has been a lack of attention on its application in the removal of low concentrations of pollutants from low conductivity water. In this review, membrane substrates and electrocatalysts used to improve the performance of electrochemical membranes are briefly summarized. Meanwhile, the application prospects of emerging single-atom catalysts in electrochemical filtration are also presented. Thereafter, several electrochemical advanced oxidation processes coupled with membrane filtration are described, and the related working mechanisms and their advantages and shortcomings used in drinking water purification are illustrated. Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) are an essential class of biotherapeutics. A platform process is used for mAb development to ensure clinically safe and stable molecules. Regulatory authorities ensure that mAb production processes include sufficient viral clearance steps to achieve less than one virus particle per million doses of product. Virus filtration is used for size-based removal of enveloped and nonenveloped viruses during downstream processing of mAbs. Process development in mAb purification relies on empirical approaches and often includes adsorptive prefiltration to mitigate virus filter fouling. Opportunities for molecular-level prediction of mAb filterability are needed to plug the existing knowledge gap in downstream processing. A molecular-level approach to understanding the factors influencing mAb filterability may reduce process development time, material loss, and processing costs due to oversized virus filters. In this work, pH step gradient fractionation was applied on polished bulk mAb feed to obtain concentrated pools of fractionated mAb variants. Biophysical properties and quality attributes of fractionated pools, including oligomeric state (size), isoelectric point profile, diffusion interaction parameters, and glycoform profile, were determined using bioanalytical methods. Filterability (loading and throughput) of fractionated pools were evaluated. Temperature is a significant operational parameter of denitrifying filter (DF), which affects the microbial activity and the pollutants removal efficiency. This study investigated the influence of temperature on performance of advanced synergistic nitrogen removal (ASNR) of partial-denitrification anammox (PDA) and denitrification, consuming the hydrolytic and oxidation products of refractory organics in the actual secondary effluent (SE) as carbon source. When the test water temperature (TWT) was around 25, 20, 15 and 10 °C, the filtered effluent total nitrogen (TN) was 1.47, 1.70, 2.79 and 5.52 mg/L with the removal rate of 93.38%, 92.25%, 87.33% and 74.87%, and the effluent COD cr was 8.12, 8.45, 10.86 and 12.29 mg/L with the removal rate of 72.41%, 66.17%, 57.35% and 51.87%, respectively. The contribution rate of PDA to TN removal was 60.44%∼66.48%, and 0.77-0.96 mg chemical oxygen demand (COD cr ) was actually consumed to remove 1 mg TN. The identified functional bacteria, such as anammox bacteria, manganese oxidizing bacteria (MnOB), hydrolytic bacteria and denitrifying bacteria, demonstrated that TN was removed by the ASNR, and the variation of the functional bacteria along the DF layer revealed the mechanism of the TWT affecting the efficiency of the ASNR. Prefiltration before chromatographic analysis is critical in the monitoring of environmental micropollutants (MPs). However, in an aqueous matrix, such monitoring often leads to out-of-specification results owing to the loss of MPs on syringe filters. Therefore, this study investigated the loss of seventy MPs on eight different syringe filters by employing Random Forest, a machine learning algorithm. The results indicate that the loss of MPs during filtration is filter specific, with glass microfiber and polytetrafluoroethylene filters being the most effective (<20%) compared with nylon (>90%) and others (regenerated-cellulose, polyethersulfone, polyvinylidene difluoride, cellulose acetate, and polypropylene). The Random Forest classifier showed outstanding performance (accuracy range 0.81-0.95) for determining whether the loss of MPs on filters exceeded 20%. Important factors in this classification were analyzed using the SHapley Additive exPlanation value and Kruskal-Wallis test. The results show that the physicochemical properties (LogKow/LogD, pKa, functional groups, and charges) of MPs are more important than the operational parameters (sample volume, filter pore size, diameter, and flow rate) in determining the loss of most MPs on syringe filters. However, other important factors such as the implications of the roles of pH for nylon and pre-rinsing for PTFE syringe filters should not be ignored. Oily wastewater treatment is a major problem for a large variety of industrial sectors. Membrane filtration is quite promising for oil-in-water emulsion treatment by virtue of numerous eminent advantages. Here, microfiltration carbon membranes (MCMs) were prepared by the blends of phenolic resin (PR)/coal as precursor materials for efficient removal of emulsified oil from oily wastewater. The functional groups, porous structure, microstructure, morphology and hydrophilicity of the MCMs were analysed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, bubble-pressure method, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope and water contact angle, respectively. The effect of coal amount in precursor materials on the structure and properties of MCMs was mainly investigated. Under operation at 0.02 MPa for trans-membrane pressure and 6 mL min -1 for feed flowrate, the optimal oil rejection and water permeation flux are correspondingly attained to 99.1% and 21,388.5 kg m -2  h -1  MPa -1 for MCMs made by the precursor containing 25% coal. Besides, the anti-fouling ability of the as-prepared MCMs is greatly improved in comparison with the one merely made by PR. In summary, the result indicates that the as-prepared MCMs are very promising for oily wastewater treatment.

Apple polyphenols are one of the major bioactive compounds in apple products and have strong anti-inflammatory effects and the ability to prevent chronic diseases with health benefits. The development of apple polyphenol products is dependent on the extraction, purification and identification of apple polyphenols. The extracted polyphenols need to be further purified to improve the concentration of the extracted polyphenols. This review, therefore, presents the studies on the conventional and novel methods for polyphenols purification from apple products. The different chromatography methods, as one of the most widely used conventional purification methods, for polyphenol purification from various apple products are introduced. In addition, the perspective of the adsorption-desorption process and membrane filtration technique in enhancing the purification of polyphenols from apple products are presented in this review. The advantages and disadvantages of these purification techniques are also discussed and compared in depth. However, each of the reviewed technologies has some disadvantages that need to be overcome, and some mechanisms need to be further identified. Therefore, more competitive polyphenols purification techniques need to emerge in the future. It is hoped that this review can provide a research basis for the efficient purification of apple polyphenols, which can facilitate their application in various fields.

The construction and modification of a Graphene Oxide (GO) membrane, incorporating polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) cross-linked with maleic acid (MA) and supported by a nylon membrane, have been successfully completed. Systematic variations in PVA and MA concentrations were conducted to achieve membranes with favorable characteristics, stability, and excellent desalination performance. Optimization studies utilizing the Central Composite Design (CCD) revealed that the most optimal desalination results were obtained with 10 mL of PVA (0.1 mg mL -1 ) and 0.9 M of MA (GO-MA 0.9 -PVA 10 /Nylon membrane). Experimental findings demonstrated that the inclusion of PVA and MA resulted in an increased interlayer distance of GO and enhanced membrane stability. The addition of PVA increases GO membrane hydrophilicity, while the addition of MA reduces membrane hydrophilicity. The GO-MA 0.9 -PVA 10 /Nylon membrane exhibited the highest desalination performance, boasting a rejection value exceeding >99.9% and a permeance of 18.76 kg m -2 .h -1 under 1% NaCl feed at a temperature of 50 °C. This membrane demonstrated consistent desalination performance stability over an extended period of up to 70 h. Moreover, it exhibited durability through 8 cycles of 24-h usage with washing treatment.
