This newly revised edition is intended to serve as a practical tool for school administrators, physical education department heads, architects, planning consultants, and all others interested in planning new areas and facilities or checking the adequacy of those already in use. Chapter input was solicited from carefully chosen leaders in the field of athletic facility planning as well as from outstanding architects. Efforts were made to incorporate the most recent advances in facility planning and construction. Certain program areas, such as planning for the handicapped, were expanded, while outdated or irrelevant materials were deleted. The following topics are covered in separate chapters: (1) the planning process; (2) indoor facilities; (3) outdoor facilities; (4) swimming pools; (5) encapsulated spaces and stadiums; (6) service areas; (7) facilities for recreation, parks, and open spaces; (8) planning for the handicapped; and (9) trends in facility design. The book is illustrated with photographs and diagrams of the facilities discussed and selected references are cited at the end of each chapter. Appendixes include state requirements for school construction; checklists for building service, and security and safety planning; and supplementary photographs and figures. (MLF)

Before the lecture, Springfield College's twelfth president Richard Flynn gave a short speech on Humanics. The lecture was coordinated by Springfield College Provost and Vice President Jean Wyld. She introduced past Distinguished Professor of Humanics who were present that day, including Dr. Jean Ross, professor Herb Zettl, Dr. Joel Cohen, Dr. Janice Eldridge, Dr. Martin Dosick, Dr. Elizabeth Evans, Dr. Margaret Lloyd, professor Joel Dearing, Dr. Peter Polito, Dr. Barbara Jensen, Dr. Delight Champagne, Dr. Frank Torre, professor Dottie Zenaty, professor Charles Redmond, professor Ron Maggio, and Dr. Mimi Murray. Dr. Petitpas's lecture was titled "I Wonder What Would Happen If..."., Dr. Albert Petitpas holds an Ed.D. in Counseling Psychology from Boston University and an M. Ed. in College Counseling from Northeastern University. Dr. Petitpas taught and has done research in Athletic Counseling and Career Development at Springfield College from 1978. Dr. Petitpas was the Director of the National Football Foundation Center for Youth Development Through Sport. Dr. Petitpas main interests were in youth development through sport, career development, transitions, and the role of counseling in the application of sport psychology. This video shows a lecture given by Springfield College's twelfth president Richard Flynn. Dr. Flynn was introduced by SC faculty member Dr. Richard Davila. The lecture served as an introduction for the International Humanics Day event, which was held on March 28, 2007. The event was coordinated by Springfield College Provost and Vice President Jean Wyld and it was part of a series that Dr. Davila put on when he was Springfield College's Distinguished Professor of Humanics in 2006-2007., Richard D. Davila works at Springfield College as both a tenured professor and the Associate Dean and Campus Director at the Springfield College School of Human Services in Tampa, Florida. He earned his B.A. from Beacon College, his M.S.W. at the University of Connecticut in West Hartford, and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut, School of Education Psychology. While serving at the college from 1999 to 2013, Flynn expanded enrollment, developed new doctoral programs, led the most successful fundraising campaign in the college’s history, and grew student activities. He also improved the school’s financial standing, enhanced community relations, and revitalized the school’s relationship with its long-standing partner, the YMCA. Under his leadership, the college opened six new facilities and renovated thirteen existing facilities. This pamphlet, titled “Traveling into the New Millennium—Let’s Enjoy the Journey,” contains the inauguration response of Richard B. Flynn, Springfield College’s twelfth president. He gave this response during his inauguration event on October 24, 1999. Dr. Flynn spends most of the speech thanking his family, the faculty, the Springfield College community, and the board of trustees. He also names a few of the important people and milestones that brought fame to the campus since its founding. This video shows a lecture given by the Dr. Robert Barkman, who served as Springfield College’s Distinguished Professor of Humanics during the 2010-2011 academic year. The lecture, titled “It’s Not About the Banjo, It’s About the Student,” was given on April 12, 2011 at 4 p.m. in the Appleton Auditorium at the Fuller Arts Center. The video opens with Dr. Jean A. Wyld, the school’s vice president of academic affairs and professor of biology, welcoming the audience and introducing Dr. Richard B. Flynn, Springfield College’s twelfth president. Dr. Flynn then announces the school’s outstanding reaccreditation, thanks a number of professors, and describes the objectives of the Humanics Lecture Series. Dr. Flynn ends by discussing the history of Humanics. Dr. Wyld then recognizes the Distinguished Professors of Humanics who are present and describes Dr. Barkman’s contributions. Dr. Barkman begins his lecture, which is accompanied by a powerpoint, with a clip of Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the USA.” He follows by acknowledging his family, friends, and coworkers. During his year as Distinguished Professor of Humanics, Dr. Barkman spoke with both students and faculty about teaching. Based on the transcripts, he created a word cloud, which he shared along with quotes during the lecture. Dr. Barkman then describes the purpose and outcomes of the 2011 Faculty Institute. At twenty-nine minutes into the video, he begins to show series of eleven videos. In the first video, he explains the importance of teaching students critical thinking. In the second video, Ruth West describes how she prepares herself to teach. The third video shows Elizabeth Montemagni talking about her relationship with her students. This is a video of "The Man Who Plants Trees," a lecture given by Dr. Charles Redington, a biology professor at Springfield College, during the 2013 Humanics Lecture Series. Dr. Redington was named the Distinguished Professor of Humanics for the 2012-2013 academic year. The video begins with an introduction from Jean A. Wyld, the school’s vice president of academic affairs and professor of biology. After her, Dr. Richard Flynn (Springfield College’s twelfth president) describes the history of Humanics, the work completed by Charles Redington, and the night’s schedule of events. Jean Wyld then takes the stage again to recognize the previous Distinguished Professors of Humanics who are present. Dr. Redington begins his lecture by describing his early involvement with the YMCA as well as Springfield College’s international roots. He explains the importance of trees across a variety of religions and cultures, and the antiquity of trees in natural history. Trees, for Dr. Redington, serve as a metaphor for Humanics, which has roots across the world due to the school's international student body. Dr. Redington then plays a clip of a video of that shows flowers, plants, and the author Michael Pollan, who is farming. After the video clip, Dr. Redington discusses plant neurobiology and how he incorporates the Humanics philosophy into his general ecology curriculum. At this point in the presentation, Dr. Redington leads the audience on a field trip outside to visit a nearby tree. As a part of the work he completed as a Distinguished Professor of Humanics, Dr. Redington labeled trees around campus with their scientific and common names. The labels also had QR codes that linked to the Wikipedia page describing that species. His goal was to plant a tree native to each country from which Springfield College had an alumni.
