The collapse of the imperial statehood of Latvian Republic, the Baltics associated the political future with Russia wherein they elected deputies to the Constituent Assembly. Russian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Israel Petr Stegny discusses the need to respect state sovereignty. Former Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Ivan Ivanov notes the article is not convincing and diplomats are still needed. Aleksandr Orlov, Professor of international relations, notes that diplomats' influence may be decreasing, but they are still important.
