We investigate the properties of cold gas at $10^4~\rm K$ around star-forming galaxies at $z~\sim~1$ using Mg II spectra through radiative transfer modeling. We utilize a comprehensive dataset of 624 galaxies from the MAGG and MUDF programs. We focus on Mg II emission from galaxies and their outskirts to explore the cold gas within galaxies and the circumgalactic medium (CGM). We model Mg II spectra for 167 individual galaxies and stacked data for different stellar mass bins. The Mg II spectrum and surface brightness vary significantly with stellar mass. In low-mass galaxies ($M_*/M_\odot<10^9$), Mg II emission is observed in both core ($R_{\rm p}<$ 10 kpc) and halo regions (10 kpc $10^{10}$), strong core absorption and more extended halo emission are prominent. This indicates that more massive galaxies have more cold gas. Radiative transfer modeling allows us to investigate key parameters such as the Mg II column density $N_{\rm MgII}$ and the outflow velocity $v_{\rm exp}$. We identify a negative correlation between $N_{\rm MgII}$ and $v_{\rm exp}$. Since higher stellar mass galaxies exhibit a higher $N_{\rm MgII}$ and lower $v_{\rm exp}$, this suggests an abundance of slowly moving cold gas in massive galaxies. In addition, the fitting results of halo spectra indicate the presence of intrinsic Mg II absorption and strong anisotropy of the cold gas distribution around massive galaxies. Aims: We aim to observe the transits and occultations of WASP-33b, which orbits a rapidly-rotating $\delta$ Scuti pulsator, with the goal of measuring the orbital obliquity via the gravity-darkening effect, and constraining the geometric albedo via the occultation depth. Methods: We observed four transits and four occultations with CHEOPS, and employ a variety of techniques to remove the effects of the stellar pulsations from the light curves, as well as the usual CHEOPS systematic effects. We also performed a comprehensive analysis of low-resolution spectral and Gaia data to re-determine the stellar properties of WASP-33. Results: We measure an orbital obliquity 111.3 +0.2 -0.7 degrees, which is consistent with previous measurements made via Doppler tomography. We also measure the planetary impact parameter, and confirm that this parameter is undergoing rapid secular evolution as a result of nodal precession of the planetary orbit. This precession allows us to determine the second-order fluid Love number of the star, which we find agrees well with the predictions of theoretical stellar models. We are unable to robustly measure a unique value of the occultation depth, and emphasise the need for long-baseline observations to better measure the pulsation periods., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures. We study the galaxies hosting ultra-strong MgII (USMgII) absorbers at small impact parameters of $\sim$2" (5 - 20 kpc), spanning a redshift range of $0.4 \le z \le 1.7$, using deep, high-resolution images from Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Survey and spectra from SDSS survey. From a total of 418 USMgII absorbers with $W_{2796}\ \ge 3 \mathring{A}$, along 412 quasar sightlines, we detect 50 galaxies based on [O II] $\lambda\lambda$3727,3729 nebular emission detected at $\ge 2\sigma$ level. Utilizing the [O II] emission from the stacked spectrum and employing the best-fit galaxy SED template, we further identify 86 galaxies, leading to a total of 136 bona fide USMgII galaxies. With a prerequisite of having a minimum of four HSC passbands available, we find a detection rate of $\sim$38% at an average impact parameter of 11.4 kpc. We find that galaxies hosting USMgII systems are typically star-forming main sequence galaxies, with 21% exhibiting a starburst nature. The non-zero [O II] emission along the `clear' sightlines, with no stellar counterpart, hints that the USMgII absorbers may likely emanate from the unseen faint galaxies near the quasar. The USMgII absorbers preferentially align along the major and minor axes of the galaxy, which suggests that they originate in the disk or large-scale wind. We show that the distribution of $W_{2796}$ as a function of impact parameter indicates a discernible radial dependence for the `disk' and `wind' subsets, with the observed large scatter in $W_{2796}$ potentially attributed to large-scale outflows. We detect Ly$\alpha$ emission from a ~5 Mpc-long (comoving) portion of the cosmic web hosting an overdensity ($\delta \approx 25$) of 19 Ly$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs) at $z\approx 4$ within the MUSE Ultra Deep Field (MUDF), reaching an average surface brightness (SB) of $5\times 10^{-20}~\rm{erg~s^{-1}~ cm^{-2}~arcsec^{-2}}$. This large-scale structure has an average SB similar to the filament across the two MUDF quasars at $z\approx 3.22$. However, deep multiwavelength data do not show a clear presence of active galactic nuclei, suggesting that the emission is mainly regulated by the underlying gas density. We find $\approx 0.2$ dex higher star formation compared to control samples and a remarkable predominance (5/7) of blue-peaked emission lines in the spectra of the embedded LAEs, indicative of favorable conditions for gas accretion. Lastly, we quantify the contribution of intragalactic gas to the Ly$\alpha$ SB profile at large distances from LAEs. We present the discovery of two mini Neptunes near a 2:1 orbital resonance configuration orbiting the K0 star TOI-1803. We describe their orbital architecture in detail and suggest some possible formation and evolution scenarios. Using CHEOPS, TESS, and HARPS-N datasets we can estimate the radius and the mass of both planets. We used a multidimensional Gaussian Process with a quasi-periodic kernel to disentangle the planetary components from the stellar activity in the HARPS-N dataset. We performed dynamical modeling to explain the orbital configuration and performed planetary formation and evolution simulations. For the least dense planet, we define possible atmospheric characterization scenarios with simulated JWST observations. TOI-1803 b and TOI-1803 c have orbital periods of $\sim$6.3 and $\sim$12.9 days, respectively, residing in close proximity to a 2:1 orbital resonance. Ground-based photometric follow-up observations revealed significant transit timing variations (TTV) with an amplitude of $\sim$10 min and $\sim$40 min, respectively, for planet -b and -c. With the masses computed from the radial velocities data set, we obtained a density of (0.39$\pm$0.10) $\rho_{earth}$ and (0.076$\pm$0.038) $\rho_{earth}$ for planet -b and -c, respectively. TOI-1803 c is among the least dense mini Neptunes currently known, and due to its inflated atmosphere, it is a suitable target for transmission spectroscopy with JWST. We report the discovery of two mini Neptunes close to a 2:1 orbital resonance. The detection of significant TTVs from ground-based photometry opens scenarios for a more precise mass determination. The neutral sodium resonance doublet (Na i D) has been detected in the upper atmosphere of several close-in gas giants, through high-resolution transmission spectroscopy. We aim to investigate whether its variability is linked to the planets' properties, the data quality, or the accuracy of the system parameters used. Using the public code SLOPpy, we extracted the transmission spectrum in the Na i D region of ten gas giants for which a large number of HARPS-N observations are available. We modelled the absorption signals found, performing an MCMC analysis, and converted the measured absorption depth to the corresponding atmospheric height over which most sodium absorption occurs. While two targets (GJ 436 b and KELT-7 b) show no Na i D feature, we found variability in the transmission spectrum of the other targets. Three of them (HD 209458 b, WASP-80 b, and WASP-127 b) present absorption on only some nights, while in the other five targets (HD 189733 b, KELT-9 b, KELT-20 b, WASP-69 b, and WASP-76 b), a significant absorption signal is present on most of the nights analysed. Except for WASP-69 b, the measured absorption depths lead to a ratio of the two Na I D depths that is compatible with or slightly larger than one. As was expected from literature, the relative atmospheric height follows an empirical exponential trend as a function of a scaled product of the planet's equilibrium temperature and surface gravity. We confirm the sodium detection on HD 189733 b, KELT-9 b, KELT-20 b, WASP-69 b, and WASP-76 b. The signal detected in WASP-127 b requires further observations for definitive confirmation. We exclude a planetary origin for the signals found on HD 209458 b and WASP-80 b. The Virgo cluster is the closest richest nearby galaxy cluster. It is in the formation process, with a number of sub-clusters undergoing merging and interactions. Although a great laboratory to study galaxy evolution and cluster formation, its large apparent size and the severe dynamic range limitations due to the presence of the bright radio source Virgo A (M 87) reduced the ability of past wide-area radio surveys to image the region with high sensitivity and fidelity. In this paper we describe the "Virgo Cluster multi-Telescope Observations in Radio of Interacting galaxies and AGN" (ViCTORIA) project. The survey and its data reduction strategy are designed to mitigate the challenges of this field and deliver: images from 42 MHz to 1.7 GHz frequencies of the Virgo cluster, about 60 times deeper than existing data, in full polarisation, and including a blind HI survey that aims at mapping seven times more galaxies than previous experiments and without selection biases. Data have been collected with the Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR) and with MeerKAT in L-band, including polarisation and enough frequency resolution to conduct local HI studies. At the distance of Virgo, current radio instruments have the resolution to probe scales of ~500 pc and the sensitivity to study dwarf galaxies, the most fragile systems given their shallow gravitational potential wells, making Virgo a unique laboratory to study galaxy evolution and AGN feedback in a rich environment. In this work, we present some preliminary results, including high resolution images of the radio emission surrounding M 87, that show that the lobes are filled with filamentary structures. The combination of the presented radio surveys with state-of-the-art optical, UV, X-ray surveys will massively increase the scientific output from the studies of the Virgo cluster, making the ViCTORIA Project's legacy value outstanding., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

The CHaracterising ExOPlanet Satellite (CHEOPS) is a partnership between the European Space Agency and Switzerland with important contributions by 10 additional ESA member States. It is the first S-class mission in the ESA Science Programme. CHEOPS has been flying on a Sun-synchronous low Earth orbit since December 2019, collecting millions of short-exposure images in the visible domain to study exoplanet properties. A small yet increasing fraction of CHEOPS images show linear trails caused by resident space objects crossing the instrument field of view. To characterize the population of satellites and orbital debris observed by CHEOPS, all and every science images acquired over the past 3 years have been scanned with a Hough transform algorithm to identify the characteristic linear features that these objects cause on the images. Thousands of trails have been detected. This statistically significant sample shows interesting trends and features such as an increased occurrence rate over the past years as well as the fingerprint of the Starlink constellation. The cross-matching of individual trails with catalogued objects is underway as we aim to measure their distance at the time of observation and deduce the apparent magnitude of the detected objects. As space agencies and private companies are developing new space-based surveillance and tracking activities to catalogue and characterize the distribution of small debris, the CHEOPS experience is timely and relevant. With the first CHEOPS mission extension currently running until the end of 2026, and a possible second extension until the end of 2029, the longer time coverage will make our dataset even more valuable to the community, especially for characterizing objects with recurrent crossings., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, Special Issue of the Journal of Space Safety Engineering

The AU Microscopii planetary system is only 24 Myr old, and its geometry may provide clues about the early dynamical history of planetary systems. Here, we present the first measurement of the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect for the warm sub-Neptune AU\,Mic\,c, using two transits observed simultaneously with VLT/ESPRESSO, CHEOPS, and NGTS. After correcting for flares and for the magnetic activity of the host star, and accounting for transit-timing variations, we find the sky-projected spin-orbit angle of planet c to be in the range $\lambda_c=67.8_{-49.0}^{+31.7}$ degrees (1-$\sigma$). We examine the possibility that planet c is misaligned with respect to the orbit of the inner planet b ($\lambda_b=-2.96_{-10.30}^{+10.44}$ degrees), and the equatorial plane of the host star, and discuss scenarios that could explain both this and the planet's high density, including secular interactions with other bodies in the system or a giant impact. We note that a significantly misaligned orbit for planet c is in some degree of tension with the dynamical stability of the system, and with the fact that we see both planets in transit, though these arguments alone do not preclude such an orbit. TOI-396 is an F6V star ($V\approx6.4$) orbited by three transiting planets. The orbital periods of the two innermost planets are close to the 5:3 commensurability ($P_b \sim3.6$ d and $P_c \sim6.0$ d). To measure the masses of the three planets, refine their radii, and investigate whether planets b and c are in MMR, we carried out HARPS RV observations and retrieved photometric data from TESS. We extracted the RVs via a skew-normal fit onto the HARPS CCFs and performed an MCMC joint analysis of the Doppler measurements and transit photometry, while employing the breakpoint method to remove stellar activity from the RV time series. We also performed a thorough TTV dynamical analysis of the system. Our analysis confirms that the three planets have similar sizes: $R_b=2.004_{-0.047}^{+0.045}R_{\oplus}$; $R_c=1.979_{-0.051}^{+0.054}R_{\oplus}$; $R_d=2.001_{-0.064}^{+0.063}R_{\oplus}$. For the first time, we have determined the RV masses for TOI-396b and d: $M_b=3.55_{-0.96}^{+0.94}M_{\oplus}$ ($\rho_b=2.44_{-0.68}^{+0.69}$ g cm$^{-3}$) and $M_d=7.1\pm1.6M_{\oplus}$ ($\rho_d=4.9_{-1.1}^{+1.2}$ g cm$^{-3}$). Our results suggest a quite unusual system architecture, with the outermost planet being the densest. The Doppler reflex motion induced by TOI-396c remains undetected in our RV time series, likely due to the proximity of $P_c$ to the star's rotation period ($P_{\mathrm{rot}}=6.7\pm1.3$ d). We also discovered that TOI-396b and c display significant TTVs. While the TTV dynamical analysis returns a formally precise mass for TOI-396c ($M_{c,\mathrm{dyn}}=2.24^{+0.13}_{-0.67}M_{\oplus}$), the result might not be accurate owing to the poor sampling of the TTV phase. We also conclude that TOI-396b and c are close to but out of the 5:3 MMR. We present a detailed study of the large-scale shock front in Stephan's Quintet, a byproduct of past and ongoing interactions. Using integral-field spectroscopy from the new William Herschel Telescope Enhanced Area Velocity Explorer (WEAVE), recent 144 MHz observations from the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS), and archival data from the Very Large Array and James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), we obtain new measurements of key shock properties and determine its impact on the system. Harnessing the WEAVE large integral field unit's (LIFU) field of view (90 $\times$ 78 arcsec$^{2}$), spectral resolution ($R\sim2500$) and continuous wavelength coverage across the optical band, we perform robust emission line modeling and dynamically locate the shock within the multi-phase intergalactic medium (IGM) with higher precision than previously possible. The shocking of the cold gas phase is hypersonic, and comparisons with shock models show that it can readily account for the observed emission line ratios. In contrast, we demonstrate that the shock is relatively weak in the hot plasma visible in X-rays (with Mach number of $\mathcal{M} \sim 2 - 4$), making it inefficient at producing the relativistic particles needed to explain the observed synchrotron emission. Instead, we propose that it has led to an adiabatic compression of the medium, which has increased the radio luminosity ten-fold. Comparison of the Balmer line-derived extinction map with the molecular gas and hot dust observed with JWST suggests that pre-existing dust may have survived the collision, allowing the condensation of H$_{2}$ - a key channel for dissipating the shock energy., Comment: 23 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We examine the behavior of the entanglement asymmetry in the ground state of a (1+1)-dimensional conformal field theory with a boundary condition that explicitly breaks a bulk symmetry. Our focus is on the asymmetry of a subsystem $A$ originating from the symmetry-breaking boundary and extending into a semi-infinite bulk. By employing the twist field formalism, we derive a universal expression for the asymmetry, showing that the asymptotic behavior for large subsystems is approached algebraically, with an exponent which is twice the conformal dimension of a boundary condition-changing operator. As a secondary result, we also establish a similar asymptotic behavior for the string order parameter. Hot Jupiters with close-by planetary companions are rare, with only a handful of them having been discovered so far. This could be due to their suggested dynamical histories, leading to the possible ejection of other planets. TOI-2109 b is special in this regard because it is the hot Jupiter with the closest relative separation from its host star, being separated by less than 2.3 stellar radii. Unexpectedly, transit timing measurements from recently obtained CHEOPS observations show low amplitude transit-timing variations (TTVs). We aim to search for signs of orbital decay and to characterise the apparent TTVs, trying to gain information about a possible companion. We fit the newly obtained CHEOPS light curves using TLCM and extract the resulting mid-transit timings. Successively, we use these measurements in combination with TESS and archival photometric data and radial velocity data to estimate the rate of tidal orbital decay of TOI-2109 b, as well as characterise the TTVs using the N-body code TRADES and the photodynamical approach of PyTTV. We find tentative evidence at $3\sigma$ for orbital decay in the TOI-2109 system, when we correct the mid-transit timings using the best-fitting sinusoidal model of the TTVs. We do not detect additional transits in the available photometric data, but find evidence towards the authenticity of the apparent TTVs, indicating a close-by, outer companion with $P_\mathrm{c} > 1.125\,$d. Due to the fast rotation of the star, the new planetary candidate cannot be detected in the available radial velocity (RV) measurements, and its parameters can only be loosely constrained by our joint TTV and RV modelling. TOI-2109 could join a small group of rare hot Jupiter systems that host close-by planetary companions, only one of which (WASP-47 b) has an outer companion. Ram pressure stripping (RPS) is an important process that plays a significant role in shaping the evolution of cluster galaxies and their surrounding environment. Despite its recognized significance, the potential connection between RPS and AGN activity in cluster galaxies remains poorly understood. Recent claims, based on optical emission line diagnostics, have suggested such a connection. Here, we investigate this relationship from an X-ray perspective using a sample of galaxies undergoing RPS in four nearby galaxy clusters - A1656, A1367, A426, and A3627. This study is the first to test such a connection from an X-ray standpoint. Our analysis reveals no signs of enhanced X-ray AGN activity in our sample, with most RPS galaxies ($\sim$ $90\%$) showing X-ray luminosities below $10^{41}$ erg s$^{-1}$ in their central point sources. Moreover, there is no noticeable difference in X-ray AGN activity among RPS galaxies compared to a control sample of non-RPS galaxies, as demonstrated by similar X-ray luminosities observed in their central point sources. While the most luminous X-ray AGN in our sample is found in ESO 137-002, a galaxy undergoing RPS in A3627, there is no evidence for a widespread enhancement of X-ray AGN activity due to RPS. Given the limited sample size of our study, this could also indicate that either the X-ray AGN enhancement from RPS is at most weak, or the timescale for the X-ray AGN enhancement is short. Context. The PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars (PLATO) mission will observe the same area of the sky continuously for at least two years in an effort to detect transit signals of an Earth-like planet orbiting a solar-like star. Aims. We aim to study how short-term solar-like variability caused by oscillations and granulation would affect PLATO's ability to detect and size Earth if PLATO were to observe the Solar System itself. Methods. We injected Earth-like transit signals onto real solar data taken by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) instrument. We isolated short-term stellar variability by removing any variability with characteristic timescales longer than five hours. We then added a noise model for a variety of different stellar magnitudes computed by PlatoSim assuming an observation by all 24 normal cameras. We first compared four different commonly used treatments of correlated noise in the time domain. We then tried to recover pairs of transit signals. Finally, we performed transit fits using realistic priors on planetary and stellar parameters. Results. We find that short-term solar-like variability affects the correct retrieval of Earth-like transit signals in PLATO data. Variability models accounting for variations with typical timescales at the order of one hour are sufficient to mitigate these effects. For bright targets (8.5 - 10.5 mag), the transit signal of an Earth analogue can reliably be detected in PLATO data. For faint targets the results of transit search algorithms have to be verified by transit-fitting algorithms to avoid false positive detections being flagged. For bright targets (V-mag $\leq$ 9.5), the radius of an Earth-like planet orbiting a solar-like star can be correctly determined at a precision of 3% or less, assuming that at least two transit events are observed and the characteristics of the host star are well understood., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Context: Transmission spectroscopy is a powerful tool for understanding exoplanet atmospheres. At optical wavelengths, it makes it possible to infer the composition and the presence of aerosols in the atmosphere. However, unocculted stellar activity can result in contamination of atmospheric transmission spectra by introducing spurious slopes and molecular signals. Aims: We aim to characterise the atmosphere of the transiting exoplanet WASP-69b, a hot Jupiter orbiting an active K star, and characterise the host star's activity levels. Methods: We obtained three nights of spectrophotometric data with the FORS2 instrument on the VLT, covering a wavelength range of 340-1100 nm. We performed retrievals on the full spectrum with combined stellar activity and planet atmosphere models. Results: We directly detect a facula in the form of a hot spot crossing event in one of the transits and indirectly detect unocculted faculae through an apparently decreasing radius towards the blue end of the transmission spectrum. We determine a facula temperature of $\Delta T=+644^{+427}_{-263}$ K for the former and a stellar coverage fraction of around 30% with a temperature of $\Delta T=+231\pm72$ K for the latter. The planetary atmosphere is best fit with a high-altitude cloud deck at 1.4 mbar that mutes atomic and molecular features. We find indications of water and ammonia with $log(H_2O)=-2.01^{+0.54}_{-0.86}$ and $log(NH_3)=-3.4^{+0.96}_{-5.20} respectively and place 3$\sigma$ upper limits on TiO ($10^{-7.65}$) and K ($10^{-7}$). The simultaneous multi-wavelength observations allow us to break the size-contrast degeneracy for facula-crossings, meaning we can obtain temperatures for both the directly and indirectly detected faculae, which are consistent with each other., Comment: Accepted in A\&A, 18 pages, 10 figures

We present new observations from CHEOPS and TESS to clarify the architecture of the planetary system hosted by the old Galactic thick disk star TOI-561. Our global analysis, which also includes previously published photometric and radial velocity data, incontrovertibly proves that TOI-561 is hosting at least four transiting planets with periods of 0.44 days (TOI-561 b), 10.8 days (TOI-561 c), 25.7 days (TOI-561 d), and 77.1 days (TOI-561 e) and a fifth non-transiting candidate, TOI-561f with a period of 433 days. The precise characterisation of TOI-561's orbital architecture is interesting since old and metal-poor thick disk stars are less likely to host ultra-short period Super-Earths like TOI-561 b. The new period of planet -e is consistent with the value obtained using radial velocity alone and is now known to be $77.14399\pm0.00025$ days, thanks to the new CHEOPS and TESS transits. The new data allowed us to improve its radius ($R_p = 2.517 \pm 0.045 R_{\oplus}$ from 5$\%$ to 2$\%$ precision) and mass ($M_p = 12.4 \pm 1.4 M_{\oplus}$) estimates, implying a density of $\rho_p = 0.778 \pm 0.097 \rho_{\oplus}$. Thanks to recent TESS observations and the focused CHEOPS visit of the transit of TOI-561 e, a good candidate for exomoon searches, the planet's period is finally constrained, allowing us to predict transit times through 2030 with 20-minute accuracy. We present an updated version of the internal structure of the four transiting planets. Atmospheric characterization is key to understanding exoplanetary systems, offering insights into the planets current and past conditions. By analyzing key lines like H alpha and the He I triplet, we can trace the evolution of planets through atmospheric photo-evaporation. While ultra-hot Jupiters have been the focus for years, attention is shifting toward smaller, colder planets, which are more challenging to study due to weaker signals, requiring more precise techniques. This study aims to characterize the atmosphere of TOI-5398 b, a warm Saturn with a 10.59-day orbit around a young (650 Myr) G-type star. The system also hosts a smaller inner planet, TOI-5398 c, with a 4.77-day orbit. Both planets are ideal for atmospheric studies due to their proximity to the host star, which drives strong photo-evaporation, especially in planet b, whose high transmission spectroscopy metric (288) makes it a prime target. We analyzed data from a transit observed with the HARPS-N and GIANO-B high-resolution spectrographs, using cross-correlation and single-line analysis to search for atomic species. During this observation, planet c was also transiting, so we investigated the source of the signals. Based on photo-evaporation models, we attribute the signal mainly to planet b, which is expected to lose more mass. We detected H alpha and He I triplets, key markers of photo-evaporation, corresponding to atmospheric heights of 2.33 Rp and 1.65 Rp, respectively. The ATES models supported our observations, predicting a similar He I absorption for planet b and suggesting an He/H ratio of 1/99. Ultra-hot Jupiters (UHJs) are gas giant planets orbiting close to their host star, with equilibrium temperatures exceeding 2000 K, and among the most studied planets in terms of their atmospheric composition. Thanks to a new generation of ultra-stable high-resolution spectrographs, it is possible to detect the signal from the individual lines of the species in the exoplanetary atmospheres. We employed two techniques in this study. First, we used transmission spectroscopy, which involved examining the spectra around single lines of FeII. Then we carried out a set of cross-correlation studies for two UHJs: KELT-9b and KELT-20b. Both planets orbit fast-rotating stars, which resulted in the detection of the strong Rossiter-McLaughlin (RM) effect and center-to-limb variations in the transmission spectrum. These effects had to be corrected to ensure a precise analysis. Using the transmission spectroscopy method, we detected 21 single lines of FeII in the atmosphere of KELT-9b. All of the detected lines are blue-shifted, suggesting strong day-to-night side atmospheric winds. The cross-correlation method leads to the detection of the blue-shifted signal with a signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of 13.46. Our results are in agreement with models based on non-local thermodynamical equilibrium (NLTE) effects, with a mean micro-turbulence of nu_mic = 2.73 +/- 1.5 km/s and macro-turbulence of nu_mac = 8.22 +/- 3.85 km/s. In the atmosphere of KELT-20b, we detected 17 single lines of FeII. Considering different measurements of the systemic velocity of the system, we conclude that the existence of winds in the atmosphere of KELT-20b cannot be determined conclusively. The detected signal with the cross-correlation method presents a S/N of 11.51. We present new ALMA continuum and spectral observations of the MUSE Ultra Deep Field (MUDF), a $2\times 2$ arcmin$^2$ region with ultradeep multiwavelength imaging and spectroscopy hosting two bright $z\approx 3.22$ quasars used to study intervening gas structures in absorption. Through a blind search for dusty galaxies, we identified a total of seven high-confidence sources, six of which with secure spectroscopic redshifts. We estimate galaxy dust and stellar masses ($M_{\rm dust}\simeq 10^{7.8-8.6}\,M_{\odot}$, $M_{\star}\simeq 10^{10.2-10.7}\,M_{\odot}$), as well as star formation rates (${\rm SFR}\simeq 10^{1.2-2.0}\,M_{\odot}\,{\rm yr^{-1}} $) which show that most of these galaxies are massive and dust-obscured similar to coeval (sub-)millimeter galaxies. All six spectroscopically-confirmed galaxies are within $500~\rm km~s^{-1}$ of metal absorption lines observed in the quasar sightlines, corresponding to $100\%$ association rate. We also find that four of these galaxies belong to groups in which they are among the most massive members. Within the multiple group galaxies associated to the same absorption system, the ALMA sources are not always the closest in projection, but they are often aligned with the gaseous structures in velocity space. This suggests that these massive galaxies occupy the center of the potential well of the gas structures traced in absorption. However, albeit the low number density of sources identified with ALMA, our study may indicate that absorbers seem to infrequently originate in the inner circumgalactic medium of these galaxies. A direct link between large-scale environment and galaxy properties is very well established in the local universe. However, very little is known about the role of the environment for galaxy growth before the peak of the cosmic star formation history at $z>3$ due to the rarity of high-redshift, overdense structures. Using a combination of deep, multiwalength observations, including MUSE, JWST, Chandra, HST and ground-based imaging, we detect and study the properties of a population of star-forming galaxies in the field of a hyperluminous quasar at $z\approx3.25$ associated with the giant Ly$\alpha$ nebula MQN01. We find that this region hosts one of the largest overdensity of galaxies found so far at $z>3$, with $\rho/\bar{\rho}=53\pm17$ within $4\times4\rm\,cMpc^2$ and $|\Delta v|<1000\rm\,km\,s^{-1}$ from the quasar, providing a unique laboratory to study the link between overdense regions and galaxy properties at high redshift. Even in these rare overdense regions, galaxies are forming stars at a rate consistent with the main sequence at $z\approx3$, demonstrating that their SFR is regulated by local properties correlated with their stellar mass rather than by their environment. However, the high-mass-end of the stellar mass function is significantly elevated with respect to that of galaxies in the field at $\log(M_\star/{M_\odot})\gtrsim10.5$, suggesting that massive galaxies in overdense regions build-up their stellar mass earlier or more efficiently than in average regions of the universe. Finally, the overdensity of color-selected Lyman break galaxies observed on larger scales, across $\approx24\times24\rm\,cMpc^2$, is found to be aligned toward the structure traced by the spectroscopically-confirmed galaxies identified with MUSE in the inner $4\times4\rm\,cMpc^2$, suggesting that this highly overdense region could further extend up to a few tens of comoving Mpc., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures. We search for the galaxies associated with the intervening MgII absorbers over a redshift range of $0.4 \le z \le 1.0$ using imaging data from DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys and measure the redshift based on direct detection of nebular emission in the background quasar spectra from SDSS survey. We find 270 MgII absorbers associated with strong [O II] nebular emissions, at $2.5\sigma$ level. Among them, for 213 MgII absorbers, we detect an absorber host galaxy at impact parameters of $4 \le \rho \le 16$ kpc, including a galaxy pair associated with three absorbers, with best-fit galaxy SED model based on multi-passband photometric data from DESI Legacy Imaging surveys, supplemented with the infrared VISTA and unWISE imaging surveys. The detection rate of MgII absorber host with strong [O II] nebular emission in the finite SDSS fiber of 2--3 arcsec diameter increases from 0.2% to $\sim$3% with increasing equivalent width from $0.3$\r{A} to $\sim$ 3.5\r{A}, which remains near-constant across the probed redshift range. The associated MgII host galaxies exhibit a wide range of stellar mass from 7.94 $\le \rm log(M_{\star}/M_{\odot}) \le $ 11.11, with an average star-formation rate (SFR) of $ 5.81 \rm M_{\odot}\ yr^{-1}$. The MgII absorber hosts selected based on [O II] nebular emission mostly exhibit active star-forming systems including 13.4% starburst systems, but 10.2% with suppressed SFR. The near-constant absorption strength at low-impact parameters suggests a high gas covering fraction. We find that the MgII equivalent width ($W_{2796}$) positively correlates with SFR and specific-SFR, likely indicate their wind origin. Exploring SMBH population in protoclusters offers valuable insights into how environment affects SMBH growth. However, research on AGN within these areas is still limited by the small number of protoclusters known at high redshift and by the availability of associated deep X-ray observations. To understand how different environments affect AGN triggering and growth at high redshift, we investigated the X-ray AGN population in the field of the MUSE Quasar Nebula 01 (MQN01) protocluster at z ~3.25. This field is known for hosting the largest Lya nebula in the Borisova+16 sample, and one of the largest overdensities of UV-continuum selected and sub-mm galaxies found so far at this redshift. We conducted a ultra deep Chandra X-ray survey (634 ks) observation of the MQN01 field and produced a comparative analyses of the properties of the X-ray AGNs detected in MQN01 against those observed in other selected protoclusters, such as Spiderweb and SSA22. By combining the X-ray, deep MUSE and ALMA data of the same field, we identified six X-ray AGNs within a volume of 16 cMpc^2 and \pm 1000 km/s, corresponding to an X-ray AGN overdensity of ~1000. This overdensity increases at the bright end, exceeding what was observed in the Spiderweb and SSA22 within similar volumes. The AGN fraction measured in MQN01 is significantly higher (f_AGN > 20%) than in the field and increases with stellar masses, reaching a value of 100% for log(M*/Msun) > 10.5. Lastly, we observe that the average specific accretion rate (\lambda_sBHAR) for SMBH populations in MQN01 is higher than in the field and other protoclusters, generally increasing as one moves toward the center of the overdensity. Observational studies showed that galaxy disks are already in place in the first few billion years of the universe. The early disks detected so far, with typical half-light radii of 3 kiloparsecs at stellar masses around 10^11 M_sun for redshift z~3, are significantly smaller than today's disks with similar masses, in agreement with expectations from current galaxy models. Here, we report observations of a giant disk at z=3.25, when the universe was only 2 billion years old, with a half-light radius of 9.6 kiloparsecs and stellar mass of 3.7^+2.6_-2.2x10^11 M_sun. This galaxy is larger than any other kinematically-confirmed disks at similar epochs and surprisingly similar to today's largest disks regarding size and mass. JWST imaging and spectroscopy reveal its spiral morphology and a rotational velocity consistent with local Tully-Fisher relation. Multi-wavelength observations show that it lies in an exceptionally dense environment, where the galaxy number density is over ten times higher than the cosmic average and mergers are frequent. The discovery of such a giant disk suggests the presence of favorable physical conditions for large-disk formation in dense environments in the early universe, which may include efficient accretion of gas carrying coherent angular momentum and non-destructive mergers between exceptionally gas-rich progenitor galaxies., Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures; submitted

Ram pressure stripping of the spiral galaxy ESO 137-001 within the highly dynamical intracluster medium (ICM) of the Norma cluster lead to spectacular extraplanar CO, optical, H$\alpha$, UV, and X-ray emission. The Halpha and X-ray tails extend up to 80 kpc from the galactic disk. Dynamical simulations of the ram pressure stripping event are presented to investigate the physics of the stripped gas and its ability to from stars, to predict HI maps, and to constrain the orbit of ESO 137-001 within the Norma cluster. Special care was taken for the stripping of the diffuse gas. In a new approach, we analytically estimate the mixing between the intracluster and interstellar media. Different temporal ram pressure profiles and the ICM-ISM mixing rate were tested. Three preferred models show most of the observed multi-wavelength characteristic of ESO 137-001. Our highest-ranked model best reproduces the CO emission distribution, velocity for distances <~ 20 kpc from the galactic disk, and the available NUV observations. The second and third preferred models reproduce best the available X-ray and Halpha observations of the gas tail including the Halpha velocity field. The angle between the direction of the galaxy's motion and the galactic disk is between 60 and 75 degrees. Ram pressure stripping thus occurs more face-on. The existence of a two-tail structures is a common feature in our models. It is due to the combined action of ram pressure and rotation together with the projection of the galaxy on the sky. Our modelling of the Halpha emission caused by ionization through thermal conduction is consistent with observations. HI emission distributions for the different models are predicted. Based on the 3D velocity vector derived from our dynamical model we derive a galaxy orbit, which is close to unbound., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A. Hot Jupiters are giant planets subject to intense stellar radiation. The physical and chemical properties of their atmosphere makes them the most amenable targets for the atmospheric characterization. In this paper we analyze the photometry collected during the secondary eclipses of the hot Jupiter WASP-3 b by CHEOPS, TESS and Spitzer. Our aim is to characterize the atmosphere of the planet by measuring the secondary eclipse depth in several passbands and constrain the planetary dayside spectrum. Our update of the stellar and planetary properties is consistent with previous works. The analysis of the occultations returns an eclipse depth of 92+-21 ppm in the CHEOPS passband, 83+-27 ppm for TESS and >2000 ppm in the IRAC 1-2-4 Spitzer passbands. Using the eclipse depths in the Spitzer bands we propose a set of likely emission spectra which constrain the emission contribution in the \cheops and TESS passbands to approximately a few dozens of parts per million. This allowed us to measure a geometric albedo of 0.21+-0.07 in the CHEOPS passband, while the TESS data lead to a 95\% upper limit of $\sim$0.2. WASP-3 b belongs to the group of ultra-hot Jupiters which are characterized by low Bond albedo (<0.3+-0.1), as predicted by different atmospheric models. On the other hand, it unexpectedly seems to efficiently recirculate the absorbed stellar energy, unlike similar highly irradiated planets. To explain this inconsistency, we propose that other energy recirculation mechanisms may be at play other than advection (for example, dissociation and recombination of H_2). Another possibility is that the observations in different bandpasses probe different atmospheric layers, making the atmospheric analysis difficult without an appropriate modeling of the thermal emission spectrum of WASP-3 b, which is not feasible with the limited spectroscopic data available to date.

We examine the prevalence of truncated star-forming disks in the Virgo cluster down to $M_* \simeq 10^7 ~\text{M}_{\odot}$. This work makes use of deep, high-resolution imaging in the H$\alpha$+[NII] narrow-band from the Virgo Environmental Survey Tracing Ionised Gas Emission (VESTIGE) and optical imaging from the Next Generation Virgo Survey (NGVS). To aid in understanding the effects of the cluster environment on star formation in Virgo galaxies, we take a physically-motivated approach to define the edge of the star-forming disk via a drop-off in the radial specific star formation rate profile. Comparing with the expected sizes of normal galactic disks provides a measure of how truncated star-forming disks are in the cluster. We find that truncated star-forming disks are nearly ubiquitous across all regions of the Virgo cluster, including beyond the virial radius (0.974 Mpc). The majority of truncated disks at large clustercentric radii are of galaxies likely on first infall. As the intra-cluster medium density is low in this region, it is difficult to explain this population with solely ram-pressure stripping. A plausible explanation is that these galaxies are undergoing starvation of their gas supply before ram-pressure stripping becomes the dominant quenching mechanism. A simple model of starvation shows that this mechanism can produce moderate disk truncations within 1-2 Gyr. This model is consistent with `slow-then-rapid' or `delayed-then-rapid' quenching, where the early starvation mode drives disk truncations without significant change to the integrated star formation rate, and the later ram-pressure stripping mode rapidly quenches the galaxy. K2-24 is a planetary system composed of two transiting low-density Neptunians locked in an almost perfect 2:1 resonance and showing large TTVs, i.e., an excellent laboratory to search for signatures of planetary migration. Previous studies performed with K2, Spitzer and RV data tentatively claimed a significant non-zero eccentricity for one or both planets, possibly high enough to challenge the scenario of pure disk migration through resonant capture. With 13 new CHEOPS light curves (seven of planet -b, six of planet -c), we carried out a global photometric and dynamical re-analysis by including all the available literature data as well. We got the most accurate set of planetary parameters to date for the K2-24 system, including radii and masses at 1% and 5% precision (now essentially limited by the uncertainty on stellar parameters) and non-zero eccentricities $e_b=0.0498_{-0.0018}^{+0.0011}$, $e_c=0.0282_{-0.0007}^{+0.0003}$ detected at very high significance for both planets. Such relatively large values imply the need for an additional physical mechanism of eccentricity excitation during or after the migration stage. Also, while the accuracy of the previous TTV model had drifted by up to 0.5 days at the current time, we constrained the orbital solution firmly enough to predict the forthcoming transits for the next ~15 years, thus enabling an efficient follow-up with top-level facilities such as JWST or ESPRESSO., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, 8 tables. We present near-infrared observations, acquired with the Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) on board of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), of a Ly$\alpha$ double-clumped emitting nebula at $z \approx 3.25$ associated with a damped Ly$\alpha$ absorber (DLA). With the WFC3/F160W data we observe the stellar continuum around $3600$ $\mathring{\rm A}$ in the rest frame for a galaxy embedded in the West clump of the nebula, $G_{\rm W}$, for which we estimate a star formation rate SFR$_{G_{\rm W}} = 5.0 \pm 0.4$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ and maximum stellar mass M$_{G_{\rm W}} < 9.9 \pm 0.7 \times 10^9$ M$_\odot$. With the enhanced spatial resolution of HST, we discover the presence of an additional faint source, $G_{\rm E}$, in the center of the East clump, with a star formation rate of SFR$_{G_{\rm E}} = 0.70 \pm 0.20$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ and maximum stellar mass M$_{G_{\rm E}} < 1.4 \pm 0.4 \times 10^9$ M$_\odot$. We show that the Ly$\alpha$ emission in the two clumps can be explained by recombination following in-situ photoionization by the two galaxies, assuming escape fractions of ionizing photons of $\lesssim 0.24$ for $G_{\rm W}$ and $\lesssim 0.34$ for $G_{\rm E}$. The fact that $G_{\rm W}$ is offset by $\approx 8$ kpc from the West clump does not fully rule out the presence of additional fainter star-forming sources that would further contribute to the photon budget inside this $\approx 10^{12}$ M$_\odot$ galaxy group that extends over a region encompassing over $30 \times 50$ kpc., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, 1 table. We analysed six primary transits of the ultra-hot Jupiter KELT-9,b obtained with the HARPS-N high-resolution spectrograph in the context of the Global Architecture of Planetary Systems (GAPS2) project, to characterise the atmosphere via single-line analysis. We extracted the transmission spectrum of each individual line by comparing the master out-of-transit spectrum with the in-transit spectra and computing the weighted average of the tomography in the planet reference frame. We corrected for the centre-to-limb variation and the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect by modelling the region of the star disc obscured by the planet during the transit and subtracting it from the master-out spectrum. We detected all six observable lines of the Balmer series within the HARPS-N wavelength range, from H$\alpha$ to H$\zeta$, with a significance exceeding 5$\sigma$. We focussed on metal species, detecting Na I, Ca I, Ca II, Fe I, Fe II, Mg I, Ti II, Sc II, and Cr II lines. This is the first detection in the atmosphere of an exoplanet of H$\epsilon$ and H$\zeta$ lines, as well as of individual lines of Sc II and Cr II. Our detections are supported by a comparison with published synthetic transmission spectra of KELT-9b obtained accounting for non-local thermodynamic equilibrium effects. The results underline the presence of a systematic blueshift due to night-side to day-side winds. The single-line analysis allowed us not only to assess the presence of atomic species in the atmosphere of KELT-9 b, but also to further characterise the local stratification of the atmosphere. Coupling the height distribution of the detected species with the velocity shift retrieved, we acknowledged the height distribution of night-side to day-side winds. Moreover, the study of the rotational broadening of different species supports the prediction of a tidally locked planet rotating as a rigid body.

We characterize, for the first time, the average extended emission in multiple lines ([OII], [OIII], and Hbeta) around a statistical sample of 560 galaxies at z~0.25-0.85. By stacking the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) 3D data from two large surveys, the MUSE Analysis of Gas around Galaxies (MAGG) and the MUSE Ultra Deep Field (MUDF), we detect significant [OII] emission out to ~40 kpc, while [OIII] and Hbeta emission is detected out to ~30 kpc. Via comparisons with the nearby average stellar continuum emission, we find that the line emission at 20-30 kpc likely arises from the disk-halo interface. Combining our results with that of our previous study at z~1, we find that the average [OII] surface brightness increases independently with redshift over z~0.4-1.3 and with stellar mass over M* ~10^{6-12} Msun, which is likely driven by the star formation rate as well as the physical conditions of the gas. By comparing the observed line fluxes with photoionization models, we find that the ionization parameter declines with distance, going from log q (cm/s) ~7.7 at <=5 kpc to ~7.3 at 20-30 kpc, which reflects a weaker radiation field in the outer regions of galaxies. The gas-phase metallicity shows no significant variation over 30 kpc, with a metallicity gradient of ~0.003 dex/kpc, which indicates an efficient mixing of metals on these scales. We present intial results associating galaxies in the MUSE Ultra Deep Field (MUDF) with gas seen in absorption along the line-of-sight to two bright quasars in this field, to explore the dependence of metals in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) on galaxy properties. The MUDF includes $\sim$140h of VLT/MUSE data and 90 orbits of HST/G141M grism observations alongside VLT/UVES spectroscopy of the two quasars and several bands of HST imaging. We compare the metal absorption around galaxies in this field as a function of impact parameter, azimuthal angle and galaxy metallicity across redshifts 0.5 $<$ z $<$ 3.2. Due to the depth of our data and a large field-of-view, our analysis extends to low stellar masses ($<$ $10^{7}$ M$_{\odot}$) and high impact parameters ($>$ 600 kpc). We find a correlation between absorber equivalent width and number of nearby galaxies, but do not detect a significant anti-correlation with impact parameter. Our full sample does not show any significant change in absorber incidence as a function of azimuthal angle. However, we do find a bimodality in the azimuthal angle distribution of absorption at small impact parameters ($<$2 r$_{vir}$) and around highly-star-forming galaxies, possibly indicating disk-like accretion and biconical outflows. Finally, we do not detect any systematic deviation from the fundamental metallicity relation (FMR) among galaxies with detected absorption. We report the spectroscopic confirmation and fundamental properties of TOI-757 b, a mini-Neptune on a 17.5-day orbit transiting a bright star ($V = 9.7$ mag) discovered by the TESS mission. We acquired high-precision radial velocity measurements with the HARPS, ESPRESSO, and PFS spectrographs to confirm the planet detection and determine its mass. We also acquired space-borne transit photometry with the CHEOPS space telescope to place stronger constraints on the planet radius, supported with ground-based LCOGT photometry. WASP and KELT photometry were used to help constrain the stellar rotation period. We also determined the fundamental parameters of the host star. We find that TOI-757 b has a radius of $R_{\mathrm{p}} = 2.5 \pm 0.1 R_{\oplus}$ and a mass of $M_{\mathrm{p}} = 10.5^{+2.2}_{-2.1} M_{\oplus}$, implying a bulk density of $\rho_{\text{p}} = 3.6 \pm 0.8$ g cm$^{-3}$. Our internal composition modeling was unable to constrain the composition of TOI-757 b, highlighting the importance of atmospheric observations for the system. We also find the planet to be highly eccentric with $e$ = 0.39$^{+0.08}_{-0.07}$, making it one of the very few highly eccentric planets among precisely characterized mini-Neptunes. Based on comparisons to other similar eccentric systems, we find a likely scenario for TOI-757 b's formation to be high eccentricity migration due to a distant outer companion. We additionally propose the possibility of a more intrinsic explanation for the high eccentricity due to star-star interactions during the earlier epoch of the Galactic disk formation, given the low metallicity and older age of TOI-757., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 26 pages, 14 figures, 6 tables

More than 30% of white dwarfs exhibit atmospheric metals, which are understood to be from recent or ongoing accretion of circumstellar debris. In cool white dwarfs, surface motions should rapidly homogenise photospheric abundances, and the accreted heavy elements should diffuse inward on a timescale much longer than that for surface mixing. The recent discovery of a metal scar on WD0816-310 implies its magnetic field has impeded surface mixing of metals near the visible magnetic pole. Here, we report the discovery of a second magnetic, metal-polluted white dwarf, WD2138-332, which exhibits periodic variability in longitudinal field, metal line strength, and broadband photometry. All three variable quantities have the same period, and show remarkable correlations: the published light curves have a brightness minimum exactly when the longitudinal field and line strength have a maximum, and a maximum when the longitudinal field and line strength have a minimum. The simplest interpretation of the line strength variability is that there is an enhanced metal concentration around one pole of the magnetic field; however, the variable line-blanketing cannot account for the observed multi-band light curves. More theoretical work is required to understand the efficiency of horizontal mixing of the accreted metal atoms, and the origin of photometric variability. Because both magnetic, metal-polluted white dwarfs that have been monitored to date show that metal line strengths vary in phase with the longitudinal field, we suggest that metal scars around magnetic poles may be a common feature of metal-polluted white dwarfs., Comment: A&A Letters (in press)

We present new near-ultraviolet (NUV, $\lambda$ = 2479 $-$ 3306 $\r{A}$) transmission spectroscopy of KELT-9b, the hottest known exoplanet, obtained with the Colorado Ultraviolet Transit Experiment ($CUTE$) CubeSat. Two transits were observed on September 28th and September 29th 2022, referred to as Visits 1 and 2 respectively. Using a combined transit and systematics model for each visit, the best-fit broadband NUV light curves are R$_{\text{p}}$/R$_{\star}$ $=$ 0.136$_{0.0146}^{0.0125}$ for Visit 1 and R$_{\text{p}}$/R$_{\star}$ $=$ 0.111$_{0.0190}^{0.0162}$ for Visit 2, appearing an average of 1.54$\times$ larger in the NUV than at optical wavelengths. While the systematics between the two visits vary considerably, the two broadband NUV light curves are consistent with each other. A transmission spectrum with 25 $\r{A}$ bins suggests a general trend of excess absorption in the NUV, consistent with expectations for ultra-hot Jupiters. Although we see an extended atmosphere in the NUV, the reduced data lack the sensitivity to probe individual spectral lines.

Among the thousands of exoplanets discovered to date, approximately a few hundred gas giants on short-period orbits are classified as "lonely" and only a few are in a multi-planet system with a smaller companion on a close orbit. The processes that formed multi-planet systems hosting gas giants on close orbits are poorly understood, and only a few examples of this kind of system have been observed and well characterised. Within the contest of multi-planet system hosting gas-giant on short orbits, we characterise TOI-1130 system by measuring masses and orbital parameters. This is a 2-transiting planet system with a Jupiter-like planet (c) on a 8.35 days orbit and a Neptune-like planet (b) on an inner (4.07 days) orbit. Both planets show strong anti-correlated transit timing variations (TTVs). Furthermore, radial velocity (RV) analysis showed an additional linear trend, a possible hint of a non-transiting candidate planet on a far outer orbit. Since 2019, extensive transit and radial velocity observations of the TOI-1130 have been acquired using TESS and various ground-based facilities. We present a new photo-dynamical analysis of all available transit and RV data, with the addition of new CHEOPS and ASTEP+ data that achieve the best precision to date on the planetary radii and masses and on the timings of each transit. We were able to model interior structure of planet b constraining the presence of a gaseous envelope of H/He, while it was not possible to assess the possible water content. Furthermore, we analysed the resonant state of the two transiting planets, and we found that they lie just outside the resonant region. This could be the result of the tidal evolution that the system underwent. We obtained both masses of the planets with a precision less than 1.5%, and radii with a precision of about 1% and 3% for planet b and c, respectively., Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures, Accepted for publication by Astronomy and Astrophysics

Multiplanetary systems spanning the radius valley are ideal testing grounds for exploring the proposed explanations for the observed bimodality in the radius distribution of close-in exoplanets. One such system is HIP 29442 (TOI-469), an evolved K0V star hosting two super-Earths and a sub-Neptune. We observe HIP 29442 with CHEOPS for a total of 9.6 days, which we model jointly with 2 sectors of TESS data to derive planetary radii of $3.410\pm0.046$, $1.551\pm0.045$ and $1.538\pm0.049$ R$_\oplus$ for planets b, c and d, which orbit HIP 29442 with periods of 13.6, 3.5 and 6.4 days. For planet d, this value deviates by more than 3 sigma from the median value reported in the discovery paper, leading us to conclude that caution is required when using TESS photometry to determine the radii of small planets with low per-transit S/N and large gaps between observations. Given the high precision of these new radii, combining them with published RVs from ESPRESSO and HIRES provides us with ideal conditions to investigate the internal structure and formation pathways of the planets in the system. We introduce the publicly available code plaNETic, a fast and robust neural network-based Bayesian internal structure modelling framework. We then apply hydrodynamic models to explore the upper atmospheric properties of these inferred structures. Finally, we identify planetary system analogues in a synthetic population generated with the Bern model for planet formation and evolution. Based on this analysis, we find that the planets likely formed on opposing sides of the water iceline from a protoplanetary disk with an intermediate solid mass. We finally report that the observed parameters of the HIP 29442 system are compatible with both a scenario where the second peak in the bimodal radius distribution corresponds to sub-Neptunes with a pure H/He envelope as well as a scenario with water-rich sub-Neptunes., Comment: 30 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Filaments connecting halos are a long-standing prediction of cold dark matter theories. We present a detection of the cosmic web emission connecting two quasar-host galaxies at redshift z ~3.22 in the MUSE Ultra Deep Field (MUDF). The very deep observations unlock a high-definition view of the filament morphology, a measure of the transition radius between the intergalactic and circumgalactic medium, and the characterization of the surface brightness profiles along the filament and in the transverse direction. Through systematic comparisons with simulations, we validate the filaments' typical density predicted in the current cold dark-matter model. Our analysis of the MUDF field, an excellent laboratory for quantitatively studying filaments in emission, opens a new avenue to constrain the physical properties of the cosmic web and to trace the distribution of dark matter on large scales., Comment: 4 main figures and 1 table; 7 extended data figures; 1 extended data table

The WHT Enhanced Area Velocity Explorer (WEAVE) is a new, massively multiplexing spectrograph. This new instrument will be exploited to obtain high S/N spectra of $\sim$25000 galaxies at intermediate redshifts for the WEAVE Stellar Population Survey (WEAVE-StePS). We test machine learning methods for retrieving the key physical parameters of galaxies from WEAVE-StePS-like spectra using both photometric and spectroscopic information at various S/Ns and redshifts. We simulated $\sim$105000 galaxy spectra assuming SFH with an exponentially declining star formation rate, covering a wide range of ages, stellar metallicities, sSFRs, and dust extinctions. We then evaluated the ability of the random forest and KNN algorithms to correctly predict such parameters assuming no measurement errors. We checked how much the predictive ability deteriorates for different S/Ns and redshifts, finding that both algorithms still accurately estimate the ages and metallicities with low bias. The dispersion varies from 0.08-0.16 dex for ages and 0.11-0.25 dex for metallicity, depending on the redshift and S/N. For dust attenuation, we find a similarly low bias and dispersion. For the sSFR, we find a very good constraining power for star-forming galaxies, log sSFR$\gtrsim$ -11, where the bias is $\sim$ 0.01 dex and the dispersion is $\sim$ 0.10 dex. For more quiescent galaxies, with log sSFR$\lesssim$ -11, we find a higher bias, 0.61-0.86 dex, and a higher dispersion, $\sim$ 0.4 dex, for different S/Ns and redshifts. Generally, we find that the RF outperforms the KNN. Finally, the retrieved sSFR was used to successfully classify galaxies as part of the blue cloud, green valley, or red sequence. We demonstrate that machine learning algorithms can accurately estimate the physical parameters of simulated galaxies even at relatively low S/N=10 per angstrom spectra with available ancillary photometric information., Comment: 19 pages, 10 + 2 figures, 4 tables, accepted in A&A

We present a novel dataset that extends our view of the cosmic gas around z$\approx$3-4 Ly$\alpha$ emitting galaxies (LAEs) in the Muse Analysis of Gas around Galaxies (MAGG) survey by tracing a cool and enriched gas phase through 47 MgII absorbers identified in newly-obtained VLT/XSHOOTER near-infrared quasar spectra. Jointly with the more ionized gas traced by CIV systems and the neutral HI from previous work, we find that LAEs are distributed inside cosmic structures that contain multiphase gas in composition and temperature. All gas phases are a strong function of the large-scale galaxy environment: the MgII and the CIV strength and kinematics positively correlate with the number of associated galaxies, and it is $\approx$3-4 times more likely to detect metal absorbers around group than isolated LAEs. Exploring the redshift evolution, the covering factor of MgII around group and isolated LAEs remains approximately constant from z$\approx$3-4 to z<2, but the one of CIV around group galaxies drops by z<2. Adding the cool enriched gas traced by the MgII absorbers to the results we obtained for the HI and CIV gas, we put forward a picture in which LAEs lie along gas filaments that contain high column-density HI systems and are enriched by strong CIV and MgII absorbers. While the MgII gas appears to be more centrally concentrated near LAEs, weaker CIV systems trace instead a more diffuse gas phase extended up to larger distances around the galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication on A&A

PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA's M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2 R_(Earth)) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5 %, 10 %, 10 % for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO's target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile at the beginning of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases.

CHEOPS is a space telescope specifically designed to monitor transiting exoplanets orbiting bright stars. In September 2023, CHEOPS completed its nominal mission and remains in excellent operational conditions. The mission has been extended until the end of 2026. Scientific and instrumental data have been collected throughout in-orbit commissioning and nominal operations, enabling a comprehensive analysis of the mission's performance. In this article, we present the results of this analysis with a twofold goal. First, we aim to inform the scientific community about the present status of the mission and what can be expected as the instrument ages. Secondly, we intend for this publication to serve as a legacy document for future missions, providing insights and lessons learned from the successful operation of CHEOPS. To evaluate the instrument performance in flight, we developed a comprehensive monitoring and characterisation programme. It consists of dedicated observations that allow us to characterise the instrument's response. In addition to the standard collection of nominal science and housekeeping data, these observations provide input for detecting, modelling, and correcting instrument systematics, discovering and addressing anomalies, and comparing the instrument's actual performance with expectations. The precision of the CHEOPS measurements has enabled the mission objectives to be met and exceeded. Careful modelling of the instrumental systematics allows the data quality to be significantly improved during the light curve analysis phase, resulting in more precise scientific measurements. CHEOPS is compliant with the driving scientific requirements of the mission. The evolution of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) is closely connected to their host galaxies and surroundings. Via feedback processes, AGN can counteract the cooling of the intracluster medium (ICM) and suppress star formation in their host galaxies. Radio observations at low frequencies provide a glimpse into the history of AGN activity. The Virgo cluster is a substantial reservoir of nearby galaxies and provides an ideal laboratory for the study of AGN as well as their feedback mechanisms. The aim of our work is to characterise the AGN population within the Virgo cluster down to low radio luminosities, constrain the AGN duty cycle and investigate environmental feedback in cluster member galaxies. We analyse 144 MHz and 1.3 GHz radio observations of early-type galaxies from the ACS Virgo Cluster Survey (ACSVCS) taken with LOFAR and MeerKAT. We detect 12 of these galaxies at 144 MHz, 5 of which show clearly extended radio emission. The radio luminosity shows a strong dependence on the stellar mass of the host galaxy, in agreement with previous results. As a notable outlier, the massive elliptical galaxy NGC 4365 ($M_* = 2.2 \times 10^{11} M_\odot$) is not detected as a compact source in the LOFAR observations. Instead, it is surrounded by diffuse, low-surface brightness emission, which hints towards a past phase of stronger nuclear activity. Furthermore, we find a cavity in NGC 4472 (= M 49) inflated by the wide-angle tail only visible in the LOFAR data, which implies that the cavity was created by a past outburst. The corresponding cavity power is of the same order of magnitude as the jet power in the present duty cycle of the AGN., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures

HIP 41378 d is a long-period planet that has only been observed to transit twice, three years apart, with K2. According to stability considerations and a partial detection of the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect, $P_\mathrm{d} = 278.36$ d has been determined to be the most likely orbital period. We targeted HIP 41378 d with CHEOPS at the predicted transit timing based on $P_\mathrm{d}= 278.36$ d, but the observations show no transit. We find that large ($>22.4$ hours) transit timing variations (TTVs) could explain this non-detection during the CHEOPS observation window. We also investigated the possibility of an incorrect orbital solution, which would have major implications for our knowledge of this system. If $P_\mathrm{d} \neq 278.36$ d, the periods that minimize the eccentricity would be $101.22$ d and $371.14$ d. The shortest orbital period will be tested by TESS, which will observe HIP 41378 in Sector 88 starting in January 2025. Our study shows the importance of a mission like CHEOPS, which today is the only mission able to make long observations (i.e., from space) to track the ephemeris of long-period planets possibly affected by large TTVs., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

RiGs are the result of the impact between two galaxies, with one of them passing close to the centre of the other, piercing its gaseous and stellar disc. In this framework, the impact generates a shock wave front that propagates within the disc of the target galaxy soon after the encounter, producing a characteristic expanding ring-shaped structure. RiGs represent one of the most extreme environments in which we can study the physical properties of galaxies and the transformations they undergo during collisions. The paradigm RiG is the Cartwheel galaxy at z = 0.03. This galaxy has been the object of both theoretical and observational studies, but the details of the mechanisms that lead to its peculiar morphology and physical properties are still far from clear. We performed a spatially resolved analysis as a function of galactocentric distance, exploiting spectroscopic data from MUSE observations combined with photometric data covering a large wavelength range, from GALEX to JWST/MIRI. Using FIF of the stellar spectra, an analysis of the nebular emission, and joint full spectral and photometry fitting, we derived physical parameters and SFHs in four spatially distinct regions of the galaxy. We find that, apart from the peculiar morphology, a large fraction of the Cartwheel galaxy is not affected by the recent impact from the companion bullet, and retains the characteristics of a typical spiral galaxy. The outer ring is strongly affected by the recent impact, and is completely dominated by stars formed not earlier than 400 Myr ago. Our picture suggests that the collision shock wave, while moving forward to the external region of the galaxy, drags the already formed stars, sweeping the inner areas outwards, as proposed by recent collision models. The TOI-178 system consists of a nearby late K-dwarf transited by six planets in the super-Earth to mini-Neptune regime, with radii ranging from 1.2 to 2.9 earth radius and orbital periods between 1.9 and 20.7 days. All planets but the innermost one form a chain of Laplace resonances. The fine-tuning and fragility of such orbital configurations ensure that no significant scattering or collision event has taken place since the formation and migration of the planets in the protoplanetary disc, hence providing important anchors for planet formation models. We aim to improve the characterisation of the architecture of this key system, and in particular the masses and radii of its planets. In addition, since this system is one of the few resonant chains that can be characterised by both photometry and radial velocities, we aim to use it as a test bench for the robustness of the planetary mass determination with each technique. We perform a global analysis of all available photometry and radial velocity. We also try different sets of priors on the masses and eccentricity, as well as different stellar activity models, to study their effects on the masses estimated by each method. We show how stellar activity is preventing us from obtaining a robust mass estimation for the three outer planets using radial velocity data alone. We also show that our joint photo-dynamical and radial velocity analysis resulted in a robust mass determination for planets c to g, with precision of 12% for the mass of planet c, and better than 10% for planets d to g. The new precisions on the radii range from 2 to 3%. The understanding of this synergy between photometric and radial velocity measurements will be valuable during the PLATO mission. We also show that TOI-178 is indeed currently locked in the resonant configuration, librating around an equilibrium of the chain.

The current standard model of cosmology successfully describes a variety of measurements, but the nature of its main ingredients, dark matter and dark energy, remains unknown. Euclid is a medium-class mission in the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) that will provide high-resolution optical imaging, as well as near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, over about 14,000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky. In addition to accurate weak lensing and clustering measurements that probe structure formation over half of the age of the Universe, its primary probes for cosmology, these exquisite data will enable a wide range of science. This paper provides a high-level overview of the mission, summarising the survey characteristics, the various data-processing steps, and data products. The TOI-421 planetary system contains two sub-Neptune-type planets and is a prime target to study the formation and evolution of planets and their atmospheres. The inner planet is especially interesting as the existence of a hydrogen-dominated atmosphere at its orbital separation cannot be explained by current formation models without previous orbital migration. We jointly analysed photometric data of three TESS sectors and six CHEOPS visits as well as 156 radial velocity data points to retrieve improved planetary parameters. We also searched for TTVs and modelled the interior structure of the planets. Finally, we simulated the evolution of the primordial H-He atmospheres of the planets using two different modelling frameworks. We determine the planetary radii and masses of TOI-421 b and c to be $R_{\rm b} = 2.64 \pm 0.08 \, R_{\oplus}$, $M_{\rm b} = 6.7 \pm 0.6 \, M_{\oplus}$, $R_{\rm c} = 5.09 \pm 0.07 \, R_{\oplus}$, and $M_{\rm c} = 14.1 \pm 1.4 \, M_{\oplus}$. We do not detect any statistically significant TTV signals. Assuming the presence of a hydrogen-dominated atmosphere, the interior structure modelling results in both planets having extensive envelopes. While the modelling of the atmospheric evolution predicts for TOI-421 b to have lost any primordial atmosphere that it could have accreted at its current orbital position, TOI-421 c could have started out with an initial atmospheric mass fraction somewhere between 10 and 35%. We conclude that the low observed mean density of TOI-421 b can only be explained by either a bias in the measured planetary parameters (e.g. driven by high-altitude clouds) and/or in the context of orbital migration. HAT-P-67 b is one of the lowest-density gas giants known to date, making it an excellent target for atmospheric characterization through the transmission spectroscopy technique. In the framework of the GAPS large programme, we collected four transit events, with the aim of studying the exoplanet atmosphere and deriving the orbital projected obliquity. We exploited the high-precision GIARPS observing mode of the TNG, along with additional archival TESS photometry, to explore the activity level of the host star. We performed transmission spectroscopy, both in the VIS and in the nIR wavelength range, and analysed the RML effect both fitting the RVs and the Doppler shadow. Based on the TESS photometry, we redetermined the transit parameters of HAT-P-67 b. By modelling the RML effect, we derived a sky-projected obliquity of ($2.2\pm0.4$){\deg} indicating an aligned planetary orbit. The chromospheric activity index $\log\,R^{\prime}_{\rm HK}$, the CCF profile, and the variability in the transmission spectrum of the H$\alpha$ line suggest that the host star shows signatures of stellar activity and/or pulsations. We found no evidence of atomic or molecular species in the VIS transmission spectra, with the exception of pseudo-signals corresponding to Cr I, Fe I, H$\alpha$, Na I, and Ti I. In the nIR range, we found an absorption signal of the He I triplet of 5.56$^{+0.29}_{-0.30}$%(19.0$\sigma$), corresponding to an effective planetary radius of $\sim$3$R_p$ (where $R_p\sim$2$R_J$) which extends beyond the planet's Roche Lobe radius. Owing to the stellar variability, together with the high uncertainty of the model, we could not confirm the planetary origin of the signals found in the optical transmission spectrum. On the other hand, we confirmed previous detections of the infrared He I triplet, providing a 19.0$\sigma$ detection.
