Existing research recognizes the crucial role played by imagination in giving meaning to our experience, thinking critically and paying attention to difference. By using a design based on what we called 'embodied imagination' (analogical reasoning) and 'narrative imagination' (contributions from universal stories), we conduct an exploratory study in a secondary school in a disadvantaged area of France, including multicultural classes. We aimed to observe how 12-15-year-old students think about conflict and how they manage tensions and conflicts that might arise during the dialogue. We have found, first, that universal stories gave students the opportunity to enrich their vision of conflict, inspiring more sophisticated thought. Secondly, we have observed that when conflicts arise during interactions, building a dialogue community is a real challenge, for teachers and students alike. Some students are able to take on the role of mediator, while others try to establish their role as speaker or find their place in the dialogue. Reflecting on the nature of peer relationships in their dialogue, one student suggests the framework of a "friendly discussion".

The capacity to navigate conflict and solve problems will persist as an essential skill of the future, even if today's students will be doing jobs that haven't been invented yet. What are we doing in schools right now to ensure students have these skills? For nearly a decade, a program called Speak Truth has taught students to use their voices, concerns, and capacity to build bridges as tools for understanding different viewpoints and collaborating to lead change.

Abstract Background Sagittal balance, commonly impaired in lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) patients, is typically assessed using the sagittal vertical axis (SVA) with EOS imaging. However, to limit X-ray exposure and medical costs, it could be interesting to evaluate the capacity of quantified motion analysis to estimate the 3D modeling of SVA in patients with symptomatic LSS. Methods An estimation of the SVA in patients with LSS was performed with 3D motion analysis. SVA and “C7_PSI” (orthogonal horizontal distance between the vertical lines through the markers of the C7 vertebra and the middle of the posterosuperior iliac spine) were measured on 37 LSS patients using EOS radiography and postural and 3D motion analysis, respectively. Multiple stepwise linear regressions were performed with EOS SVA according to age, body mass index, C7_PSI and/or postural variables. Abstract Background The aim of this study (EPIDIAB) was to assess the relationship between epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) and the micro and macrovascular complications (MVC) of type 2 diabetes (T2D). Methods EPIDIAB is a post hoc analysis from the AngioSafe T2D study, which is a multicentric study aimed at determining the safety of antihyperglycemic drugs on retina and including patients with T2D screened for diabetic retinopathy (DR) (n = 7200) and deeply phenotyped for MVC. Patients included who had undergone cardiac CT for CAC (Coronary Artery Calcium) scoring after inclusion (n = 1253) were tested with a validated deep learning segmentation pipeline for EAT volume quantification. Results Median age of the study population was 61 [54;67], with a majority of men (57%) a median duration of the disease 11 years [5;18] and a mean HbA1c of7.8 ± 1.4%. EAT was significantly associated with all traditional CV risk factors. Summary: Background & aims: Olfactory disorders impact mental health, with adverse effects on quality of life, particularly in the area of eating. Despite their high prevalence in the population, olfactory disorders are poorly managed, with patients still lacking easy access to rapid diagnosis and treatment. In this context, the present study offers a new screening tool and compares the efficiency of different olfactory training protocols. Methods: A screening test was set up and different olfactory training paradigms were compared for their effect on the recovery of the sense of smell on the one hand, and quality of life on the other. The study population was composed of post-COVID-19 dysosmic patients (with a loss of more than 6 weeks). Three training protocols were used, differing in terms of number of odors and in format (either lab-supplied odorant kits, or the use of odorants found at home). All three protocols were implemented over a 12-week period. Results: The screening test distinguished dysosmics from normosmics with an accuracy of 73%. During training, 69% of patients completed the evaluation protocol and 77% of them performed more than half of the training sessions, resulting in a 53% completion rate. Olfactory performances improved significantly after training, irrespective of the training paradigm and 59% of patients displayed a clinically significant improvement of their sense of smell. These improvements were positively associated with assiduity along training. Finally, olfactory disorders negatively affected quality of life. After olfactory training, this overall negative impact on quality of life was reduced, especially with regard to the pleasure of eating. Conclusion: This study introduces a new screening tool for olfactory deficits. It also provides important insights into the optimization of olfactory training protocols and their effects on quality of life, and on eating behavior in particular.

Objective:. To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of drain fluid lipase as an early predictor of postoperative pancreatic fistula and establish the most appropriate day for their measure. Background:. Clinically relevant postoperative pancreatic fistula remains a potentially life-threatening complication after pancreatic surgery. Early detection strategies remain key to reduce both the incidence and the burden of pancreatic fistula. Methods:. The LIPAse DRAIN (LIPADRAIN) study is a multicenter, prospective diagnostic study conducted in 7 tertiary university hospitals. Drain fluid values to detect clinically relevant postoperative pancreatic fistula from postoperative day 1 to postoperative day 6 were evaluated using receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. A biomarker was considered to be relevant for clinical use if its area under the curve (AUC) was greater than 0.75. Results:. Of the 625 patients included in the analysis, clinically relevant postoperative pancreatic fistula occurred in 203 (32%) patients. On postoperative days 3 and 4, drain fluid lipase was a reliable biomarker to detect clinically relevant postoperative pancreatic fistula (AUC: 0.761; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.761–0.799 and AUC: 0.784; 95% CI: 0.743–0.821, respectively). On postoperative day 3, with a threshold of 299 units/L, drain fluid lipase yielded a negative predictive value of 51%, sensitivity of 78%, and specificity of 63% for the detection of clinically relevant postoperative pancreatic fistula. Conclusions:. In this multicenter prospective study, drain fluid lipase is a reliable biomarker at postoperative days 3 and 4 for the diagnosis of clinically relevant postoperative pancreatic fistula after pancreatic surgery and should be systematically measured on postoperative day 3.

Purpose Survivors after acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are at high risk of developing respiratory sequelae and functional impairment. The healthcare crisis caused by the pandemic hit socially disadvantaged populations. We aimed to evaluate the influence of socio-economic status on respiratory sequelae after COVID-19 ARDS. Methods We carried out a prospective multicenter study in 30 French intensive care units (ICUs), where ARDS survivors were pre-enrolled if they fulfilled the Berlin ARDS criteria. For patients receiving high flow oxygen therapy, a flow [greater than or equal to] 50 l/min and an FiO.sub.2 [greater than or equal to] 50% were required for enrollment. Socio-economic deprivation was defined by an EPICES (Evaluation de la Précarité et des Inégalités de santé dans les Centres d'Examens de Santé - Evaluation of Deprivation and Inequalities in Health Examination Centres) score [greater than or equal to] 30.17 and patients were included if they performed the 6-month evaluation. The primary outcome was respiratory sequelae 6 months after ICU discharge, defined by at least one of the following criteria: forced vital capacity < 80% of theoretical value, diffusing capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide < 80% of theoretical value, oxygen desaturation during a 6-min walk test and fibrotic-like findings on chest computed tomography. Results Among 401 analyzable patients, 160 (40%) were socio-economically deprived and 241 (60%) non-deprived; 319 (80%) patients had respiratory sequelae 6 months after ICU discharge (81% vs 78%, deprived vs non-deprived, respectively). No significant effect of socio-economic status was identified on lung sequelae (odds ratio (OR), 1.19 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.72-1.97]), even after adjustment for age, sex, most invasive respiratory support, obesity, most severe P/F ratio (adjusted OR, 1.02 [95% CI 0.57-1.83]). L’objectif de cette étude est d’observer les conduites langagières et conceptuelles des élèves qui, engagés dans un dialogue philosophique entre pairs, sont amenés à argumenter et à problématiser. Ils parviennent à remettre en doute les opinions des autres ou leurs propres opinions afin de construire des points de vue. En fonction de la situation d’énonciation ou de co-énonciation, et du type d’activité menant au doute, les points de vue peuvent être justifiés ou pas encore explicités, ils peuvent s’opposer à ceux des autres ou encore être nuancés ou suspendus. Notre contribution commence par donner le cadre général dans lequel s’inscrit la discussion philosophique analysée ainsi que le contexte de sa réalisation. Elle esquisse par la suite les repères théoriques et les choix méthodologiques permettant de proposer un modèle d’analyse du doute qui fait appel aux actes philosophiques, à la modalisation et aux rôles actantiels argumentatifs (Proposant, Opposant et Tiers). Des extraits du corpus illustrent les propos. Nous envisageons ce modèle comme un outil pour explorer les conditions d’expression du doute dans une discussion philosophique et dégager des critères nécessaires pour distinguer un dialogue philosophique d’un débat argumentatif. Le modèle devra être testé sur d’autres discussions afin d’être ajusté et validé.

Surface pattern formation of Smart Cut™ silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrates is investigated using a new process derived from this technology. The local control of SOI surface roughness is achieved by using hetero-temperature surface activated bonding to introduce locally bespoke shear stresses into bonded silicon wafers. The finite element method is used to back up experimental measurements of these large deformations to determine the amount of shear stresses introduced into the structure, and to determine its impact on the fracture mechanism. Choroidal melanoma (CM) is the most common malignant ocular tumor in adults. The current treatment of metastatic CM is limited by the intrinsic resistance of CM to conventional systemic therapies. Immunotherapy alone or in association with cytotoxic treatment became a realist option treatment. Advancements in molecular biology have resulted in the identification of a number of promising prognostic and therapeutic targets. Herein, we report a rare case of 36-year-old patient with metastatic CM who presented a good long response to treatment with double immunotherapy reaching 3 years of overall survival, which has never been described in the literature.

Abstract Background While not traditionally included in the conceptual understanding of circulation, the interstitium plays a critical role in maintaining fluid homeostasis. Fluid balance regulation is a critical aspect of septic shock, with a well-known association between fluid balance and outcome. The regulation of transcapillary flow is the first key to understand fluid homeostasis during sepsis. Main text Capillary permeability is increased during sepsis, and was classically considered to be necessary and sufficient to explain the increase of capillary filtration during inflammation. However, on the other side of the endothelial wall, the interstitium may play an even greater role to drive capillary leak. Indeed, the interstitial extracellular matrix forms a complex gel-like structure embedded in a collagen skeleton, and has the ability to directly attract intravascular fluid by decreasing its hydrostatic pressure. Thus, interstitium is not a mere passive reservoir, as was long thought, but is probably major determinant of fluid balance regulation during sepsis. Up to this date though, the role of the interstitium during sepsis and septic shock has been largely overlooked. A comprehensive vision of the interstitium may enlight our understanding of septic shock pathophysiology. Overall, we have identified five potential intersections between septic shock pathophysiology and the interstitium: 1. increase of oedema formation, interacting with organ function and metabolites diffusion; 2. interstitial pressure regulation, increasing transcapillary flow; 3. alteration of the extracellular matrix; 4. interstitial secretion of inflammatory mediators; 5. decrease of lymphatic outflow. Conclusions We aimed at reviewing the literature and summarizing the current knowledge along these specific axes, as well as methodological aspects related to interstitium exploration.

Abstract Light emission of europium (Eu3+) ions placed in the vicinity of optically resonant nanoantennas is usually controlled by tailoring the local density of photon states (LDOS). We show that the polarization and shape of the excitation beam can also be used to manipulate light emission, as azimuthally or radially polarized cylindrical vector beam offers to spatially shape the electric and magnetic fields, in addition to the effect of silicon nanorings (Si-NRs) used as nanoantennas. The photoluminescence (PL) mappings of the Eu3+ transitions and the Si phonon mappings are strongly dependent of both the excitation beam and the Si-NR dimensions. The experimental results of Raman scattering and photoluminescence are confirmed by numerical simulations of the near-field intensity in the Si nanoantenna and in the Eu3+-doped film, respectively. The branching ratios obtained from the experimental PL maps also reveal a redistribution of the electric and magnetic emission channels. Our results show that it could be possible to spatially control both electric and magnetic dipolar emission of Eu3+ ions by switching the laser beam polarization, hence the near field at the excitation wavelength, and the electric and magnetic LDOS at the emission wavelength. This paves the way for optimized geometries taking advantage of both excitation and emission processes.

In humans, the amygdala and piriform cortex are 2 important brain structures involved in hedonic odor processing. Although the affective processing of odors in these 2 structures has been extensively studied in the past, the way in which each tested individual contributes to the observed global pattern remains little understood at this stage. The purpose of this study is to examine whether exceptional pattern extraction techniques can improve our understanding of hedonic odor processing in these brain areas while paying particular attention to individual variability. A total of 42 volunteers participated in a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study in which they were asked to smell 6 odors and describe their hedonic valence. Classical univariate analyses (statistical parametric mapping) and data mining were performed on the fMRI data. The results from both analyses showed that unpleasant odors preferentially activate the anterior part of the left piriform cortex. Moreover, the data mining approach revealed specific patterns for pleasant and unpleasant odors in the piriform cortex but also in the amygdala. The approach also revealed the contribution of each of the 42 individuals to the observed patterns. Taken together, these results suggest that the data mining approach can be used—with standard fMRI analyses—to provide complementary information regarding spatial location and the contribution of individuals to the observed patterns.

Abstract Background The genome of measles virus consists of a non-segmented single-stranded RNA molecule of negative polarity, which is encapsidated by the viral nucleoprotein (N) within a helical nucleocapsid. The N protein possesses an intrinsically disordered C-terminal domain (aa 401–525, NTAIL) that is exposed at the surface of the viral nucleopcapsid. Thanks to its flexible nature, NTAIL interacts with several viral and cellular partners. Among these latter, the Interferon Regulator Factor 3 (IRF-3) has been reported to interact with N, with the interaction having been mapped to the regulatory domain of IRF-3 and to NTAIL. This interaction was described to lead to the phosphorylation-dependent activation of IRF-3, and to the ensuing activation of the pro-immune cytokine RANTES gene. Results After confirming the reciprocal ability of IRF-3 and N to be co-immunoprecipitated in 293T cells, we thoroughly investigated the NTAIL-IRF-3 interaction using a recombinant, monomeric form of the regulatory domain of IRF-3. Using a large panel of spectroscopic approaches, including circular dichroism, fluorescence spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, we failed to detect any direct interaction between IRF-3 and either full-length N or NTAIL under conditions where these latter interact with the C-terminal X domain of the viral phosphoprotein. Furthermore, such interaction was neither detected in E. coli nor in a yeast two hybrid assay. Conclusion Altogether, these data support the requirement for a specific cellular environment, such as that provided by 293T human cells, for the NTAIL-IRF-3 interaction to occur. This dependence from a specific cellular context likely reflects the requirement for a human or mammalian cellular co-factor.
