- Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study was to examine comorbid psychiatric disorders, family functioning, and parental psychiatric symptoms in children and adolescents with chronic dermatological diseases and compare them with those of healthy controls. Materials and Methods: The research sample consisted of patients between the age of 9 and 18 years (n = 45) with alopecia areata, vitiligo, or psoriasis and a control group (CG) of healthy children and adolescents of the same age (n = 42). The psychiatric diagnoses of cases were established using Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School Aged Children Present-Lifetime Version. Family assessment device (FAD) was used to evaluate family functioning levels. Parental psychiatric symptom levels were obtained by the Symptom Checklist-90-R. Results: Children and adolescents with chronic dermatological diseases had significantly higher rates of any anxiety disorders and any axis I comorbid psychiatric disorders than healthy controls after adjusting for socioeconomic status (P < 0.05). There were no significant differences in parental psychiatric symptom levels and family functioning levels between two groups; however, families of patients with comorbid psychiatric disorders had significantly higher scores in problem-solving and communication subscales of the FAD when compared to those of patients without psychiatric disorders and CG. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that children and adolescents with chronic dermatological diseases have higher risk for anxiety disorders. When psychiatric disorders co-occur with the dermatological disease in children and adolescents, they may adversely affect the family functioning, in the domains of problem-solving and communication skills. Domestic violence is violence or other abuse by one person against another in cohabitation or marriage. It isn't surprise that women and children are world's most victimized person due to domestic violence. Because, they are often powerless. In fact, domestic violence is not physical violence alone. Also women can be victimized by psychological, sexual or economical violence in marriage. Domestic violence, causes disturbance in mental health and life quality of women. Also exposure to violence increases use of medical services in these women, and even impairs long term mental development of their children. Children who witness to domestic violence may suffer from some behavioral and emotional disturbance. Furthermore these children may be the perpetration or experiencing of violence later in life. Domestic violence against women is risk factor for depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder in these women. Therefore, questioning domestic violence in women who come to psychiatry clinic for getting help due to these reasons is crucial. The aim of this study was to review domestic violence against women, frequency, variables and the effect of domestic violence on women exposed to domestic violence and their children. Objective: This study is aimed to compare socio-demographic variables, perinatal characteristics, developmental stages, comorbid medical illnesses between children and adolescents with neurodevelopmental psychiatric disorders and non-neurodevelopmental psychiatric disorders. Methods: In this study, the files of 2981 children and adolescents referred to our, child psychiatry outpatient clinic between January 2015 and September 2016, were examined retrospectively. The data of DSM 5 based psychiatric diagnosis, mean ages, gender, parental work status and education levels, perinatal characteristics, such as a birth week, birth weight, time of speech and walking, frequent comorbid medical conditions such as epilepsy, cardiac disease and asthma, were obtained. Results: The findings showed that children most often had attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and anxiety disorders were the second common health problem. The mean ages and working rates of parents, education level of the mothers were significantly lower in children with a neurodevelopmental psychiatric disorder (n=1502) than children with non-neurodevelopmental disorder (n=690) and no psychiatric diagnosis (n=376) (p<0.05). Younger age, male gender, the requirement of neonatal intensive care unit, speech and walking delay and presence of comorbid epilepsy were associated with a neurodevelopmental psychiatric disorder. Conclusion: Knowing socio-demographic, developmental, medical and perinatal variables associated with neurodevelopmental and non-neurodevelopmental psychiatric disorders may help us to develop preventive interventions. Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of parental attachment styles and parental inattentiveness symptoms on social responsiveness problem scores of school age children diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Methods: One hundred and seventy-nine children with ADHD diagnosed between 7 and 12 years and their parents were the sample of the study. The Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children - Present and Lifetime Version was used to determine the presence of psychiatric disorders in the children. Parents were asked to fill out the Parental Attachment Scale, Wender Utah Rating Scale, and Social Responsiveness Scale. Results: As a result of the path analysis, it was shown that avoidant and ambivalent attachment levels of mothers had a significant increase effect on the levels of social responsiveness of children and mothers' attention deficit symptoms mediated this effect. The attachment style scores of fathers were not correlated with social responsiveness of children. Conclusion: In children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder comorbid with social responsiveness problems, it is recommended to consider the attachment patterns of parents, especially mothers, and possible attention deficit symptoms. Objective: The aim of this study is to examine whether there is a difference between genders in terms of psychiatric diagnoses and symptom levels in epileptic children and adolescents. Methods: Diagnostic interviews were conducted with epileptic children and adolescents aged 6-17 and their parents who referred to child and adolescent psychiatry outpatient clinic by a child psychiatrist. Depressive symptom levels of children were obtained by Child Depression Inventory and hyperactivity, inattentiveness, conduct, oppositional and anxiety levels were examined by Conner's Teacher and Parent Rating Scales. Results: Because of the psychiatric evaluations of the children, the incidence of anxiety disorders was significantly higher in females than males. Males had significantly higher levels of teacher reported hyperactivity than females. Female gender was shown to be an independent risk factor for anxiety disorders. It was found that the level of hyperactivity increased, as age decreased and male gender was an independent risk factor for hyperactivity problem. Discussion: Our study shows that while epileptic girls are especially at risk for anxiety disorders, boys for hyperactivity problems. It is proposed to develop preventive and supportive approaches to psychiatric problems that are likely to be seen according to gender in children and adolescents with epilepsy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The aims of this study were to compare the levels quality of life and perceived parental attitude in children and adolescents at high risk for schizophrenia with offspring of parents without any psychiatric disorder, and to investigate the factors affecting parental attitudes perceived by children and quality of life of children. Meth-ods: The psychiatric assessments of parents with schizophrenia who have been followed up in the Community Mental Health Center and that of healthy parents were done by a psychiatrist. Diagnostic interview with the children, within the age range of 7-16 years, was conducted by a child psychiatrist. Children and adolescents were asked to fill out self-report scales relevant to perceived parental attitudes and quality of life. Results: The levels of emotional and social functioning and the levels of parental acceptance/interest were significantly lower in the high risk group when compared to the control group. Children in the high risk group defined their parents as 'negligent' at a higher rate than the control group. There was a significant effect of sociodemographic variables such as parental educa-tion level and paternal vocational status on the quality of life scores. When compared to children of fathers with schizophrenia, children of mothers with schizophrenia had much lower quality of life scores. The duration of parental illness and the duration of hospitalization were negatively correlated with the quality of life of children. Discussion: Our study demonstrated that offspring of parents with schizophrenia had a high risk of being neglected by their parents, and a decline in their quality of life, especially in the social and emotional aspects. Preventive interventions including development of positive relationships with their parents, are crucial for children at genetic high risk for schizophrenia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: In this study, it was aimed to examine variables that predict exposure to dating violence, student's views about violence and to determine differences with non-dating violence in terms of mental problems. Methods: Eight hundred and forty-eight college girls were included in the study by random sampling. A questionnaire assessing sociodemographic and violence related variables and scales assessing depression, anxiety, thought of suicide and suicidal behavior were filled by students. Psychiatric diagnostic interview was conducted with students who had been physically abused during the past 12 months. Results: The frequency of dating physical violence for the whole group was 3.7% (n=31) and the frequency of psychological violence by flirting was 24.8% (n=210). As a result of the logistic regression analysis, it was shown that staying in dormitories had a predictive effect on dating violence. Significant differences were found in depression, anxiety and suicide scores between students who were exposed to dating and non-dating violence. There was no significant difference in the rates of psychiatric disorder among girls who were exposed to physical violence by dating and non-dating in the last 12 months. Discussion: Our study is the first study in the related literature to compare rates of psychiatric disorders, to assess the level of depression, anxiety and suicidality in college girls who were exposed to dating and/or non-dating violence. The predictive effect of staying in dormitories on dating violence is a remarkable finding and can be examined with multicentre, large sample studies. Physical violence negatively affects mental health regardless of the perpetrator's closeness. Development of programs to prevent physical abuse is important. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Based on the hypothesis that women who exposed to physical violence had lower education and income levels than those who did not, and those who got married earlier and had marriage with unwanted people had higher psychiatric disorders, the aims of this study were to determine risk factors for domestic violence and predictors of psychiatric impairment in women exposed to domestic violence. Socio-demographic data and exposure to physical violence and sexual coercion for participants were evaluated by a structured questionnaire. Depression scores of the women were evaluated by Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and anxiety scores were evaluated by Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). Suicidal ideas of the subjects were evaluated by 17 item Suicide Intent Scale and their suicide plans, attempts, thoughts, and risk of recurrence were evaluated by 4 item Suicidal Behavior Questionnaire. Results: 65,5% of the women (n=262) reported no violence, 19,3% (n=77) reported violence only from their spouses, 5,2% (n=21) reported violence from people other than spouse, and 10% (n=40) reported physical violence from both their spouses and other people. Logistic regression analysis showed that employment status of spouses, presence of medical/psychiatric illness in spouses, the acceptance of the view that 'Husbands can sometimes beat' by women and presence of psychiatric illness in women predicted domestic violence against these women from their spouses. Logistic regression analysis also revealed that education level, and presence of physical or sexual violence from their spouses predicted development of psychiatric disorders in women survivors of domestic violence. Conclusion: This study showed that opinion of women about domestic violence, presence of a psychiatric disorder in women, employment status of spouse, and presence of a medical/psychiatric illness in spouse predicted physical violence against these women. In addition, education level of women, and presence of domestic violence from their spouses predicted development of psychiatric disorder. Knowing the factors that trigger physical violence and related psychiatric impairments is really important for development of preventive and therapeutic interventions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of child himself, his/her family and abuse related variables on psychiatric disorders that can occur following sexual abuse in children and adolescents who were referred for forensic examination to child and adolescent psychiatry outpatient clinic. Method: File informations of 77 cases of sexual abuse who referred to Tekirdağ State Hospital, child psychiatry clinic between January 2011 and September 2013 were reviewed retrospectively. Sociodemographic characteristics, mental disorders and abuse-related variables were determined. Results: It was found that there was a significant relationship between presence of Axis 1 psychiatric diagnosis and the victim's age, parents' level of education, type of sexual abuse and perpetrator-victim closeness. As a result of regression analysis which examining the effect of all of these variables on psychiatric diagnosis, other variables except for father's education level has lost its significance. Conclusion: Our study supports that sexual abuse is a risk factor alone for the precence of psychiatric diagnosis independent from the effects of all other factors. Child sexual abuse is one of the most preventable causes of mental illness and behavioral disorders. Increasing the knowledge of children and adolescents and their parents will help to reduce the incidence of sexual abuse throughout the community. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
