Background: Pheochromocytoma is a rare disease, and its familial occurrence is quite uncommon. The aim of this paper is to report a three-generation phenotypical expression of a case familial occurrence of pheochromocytoma. Case presentation: A 25-year-old female, with a history of adrenalectomy for pheochromocytoma, arrived at the shock room during her third pregnancy with an adrenergic crisis and hypoglycemia. To prevent perinatal complications, the patient was stabilized and the newborn was delivered through a Kerr-type cesarean section. A detailed history revealed that the paternal grandfather of the patient had an unilateral pheochromocytoma, whereas her paternal uncle had a bilateral pheochromocytoma. Additionally, a brother of the patient presented a unilateral pheochromocytoma. Amplicons for PCR assays were designed to span the protein-coding segments of the three Von Hippel–Lindau (VHL) exons, and the PCR products were sequenced using the Sanger method. In the trace of exon 3, we detected in the sample of the proband a heterozygous guanine to adenine transition (NM_000551.4 c. 552G > A) within the protein-coding segment of exon 3 of the VHL gene, which leads to a substitution of the arginine residue at position 161 by a glutamine residue in the encoded peptide (NP_000542.1p.R161Q). This mutation was absent in two unaffected daughters. Conclusion: A VHL mutation was suspected and confirmed in this family that was not transmitted to a fourth generation. We assessed the association between cirrhosis and severe COVID-19-related outcomes among people with laboratory-diagnosed COVID-19 infection in British Columbia, Canada. We used data from the British Columbia (BC) COVID-19 Cohort, a population-based cohort that integrates data on all individuals tested for COVID-19, with data on hospitalizations, medical visits, emergency room visits, prescription drugs, chronic conditions, and deaths in the Canadian province of BC. We included all individuals aged ≥18 who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 by real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction from 1 January 2021 to 31 December 2021. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to assess the associations of cirrhosis status with COVID-19-related hospitalization and with ICU admission. Of the 162,509 individuals who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 and were included in the analysis, 768 (0.5%) had cirrhosis. In the multivariable models, cirrhosis was associated with increased odds of hospitalization (aOR = 1.97, 95% CI: 1.58–2.47) and ICU admission (aOR = 3.33, 95% CI: 2.56–4.35). In the analyses stratified by age, we found that the increased odds of ICU admission among people with cirrhosis were present in all the assessed age-groups. Significance: Continuous-wave functional near-infrared spectroscopy has proved to be a valuable tool for assessing hemodynamic activity in the human brain in a noninvasively and inexpensive way. However, most of the current processing/analysis methods assume the head is a homogeneous medium, and hence do not appropriately correct for the signal coming from the scalp. This effect can be reduced by considering light propagation in a layered model of the human head, being the Monte Carlo (MC) simulations the gold standard to this end. However, this implies large computation times and demanding hardware capabilities. Aim: In this work, we study the feasibility of replacing the homogeneous model and the MC simulations by means of analytical multilayered models, combining in this way, the speed and simplicity of implementation of the former with the robustness and accuracy of the latter. Approach: Oxy- and deoxyhemoglobin (HbO and HbR, respectively) concentration changes were proposed in two different layers of a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based meshed model of the human head, and then these changes were retrieved by means of (i) a typical homogeneous reconstruction and (ii) a theoretical layered reconstruction. Results: Results suggest that the use of analytical models of light propagation in layered models outperforms the results obtained using traditional homogeneous reconstruction algorithms, providing much more accurate results for both, the extraand the cerebral tissues. We also compare the analytical layered reconstruction with MC-based reconstructions, achieving similar degrees of accuracy, especially in the gray matter layer, but much faster (between 4 and 5 orders of magnitude). Conclusions: We have successfully developed, implemented, and validated a method for retrieving chromophore concentration changes in the human brain, combining the simplicity and speed of the traditional homogeneous reconstruction algorithms with robustness and accuracy much more similar to those provided by MC simulations. Standard manual analysis of IVUS to study the impact of anti-atherosclerotic therapies on the coronary vessel wall is done by a core laboratory (CL), the ground truth (GT). Automatic segmentation of IVUS with a machine learning (ML) algorithm has the potential to replace manual readings with an unbiased and reproducible method. The aim is to determine if results from a CL can be replicated with ML methods. This is a post-hoc, comparative analysis of the IBIS-4 (Integrated Biomarkers and Imaging Study-4) study (NCT00962416). The GT baseline and 13-month follow-up measurements of lumen and vessel area and percent atheroma volume (PAV) after statin induction were repeated by the ML algorithm. The primary endpoint was change in PAV. PAV as measured by GT was 43.95 % at baseline and 43.02 % at follow-up with a change of −0.90 % (p = 0.007) while the ML algorithm measured 43.69 % and 42.41 % for baseline and follow-up, respectively, with a change of −1.28 % (p < 0.001). Along the most diseased 10 mm segments, GT-PAV was 52.31 % at baseline and 49.42 % at follow-up, with a change of −2.94 % (p < 0.001). The same segments measured by the ML algorithm resulted in PAV of 51.55 % at baseline and 47.81 % at follow-up with a change of −3.74 % (p < 0.001). PAV, the most used endpoint in clinical trials, analyzed by the CL is closely replicated by the ML algorithm. • The risk factors for COVID-19-related hospitalization differ by vaccination status. • The overall risk is more reduced among vaccinated individuals. • Seniors and those with underlying medical conditions may benefit from booster doses. With the uptake of COVID-19 vaccines, there is a need for population-based studies to assess risk factors for COVID-19-related hospitalization after vaccination and how they differ from unvaccinated individuals. We used data from the British Columbia COVID-19 Cohort, a population-based cohort that includes all individuals (aged ≥18 years) who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 by real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction from January 1, 2021 (after the start of vaccination program) to December 31, 2021. We used multivariable logistic regression models to assess COVID-19-related hospitalization risk by vaccination status and age group among confirmed COVID-19 cases. Of the 162,509 COVID-19 cases included in the analysis, 8,546 (5.3%) required hospitalization. Among vaccinated individuals, an increased odds of hospitalization with increasing age was observed for older age groups, namely those aged 50-59 years (odds ratio [OR] = 2.95, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.01-4.33), 60-69 years (OR = 4.82, 95% CI: 3.29, 7.07), 70-79 years (OR = 11.92, 95% CI: 8.02, 17.71), and ≥80 years (OR = 24.25, 95% CI: 16.02, 36.71). However, among unvaccinated individuals, there was a graded increase in odds of hospitalization with increasing age, starting at age group 30-39 years (OR = 2.14, 95% CI: 1.90, 2.41) to ≥80 years (OR = 41.95, 95% CI: 35.43, 49.67). Also, comparing all the age groups to the youngest, the observed magnitude of association was much higher among unvaccinated individuals than vaccinated ones. Alongside a number of comorbidities, our findings showed a strong association between age and COVID-19-related hospitalization, regardless of vaccination status. However, age-related hospitalization risk was reduced two-fold by vaccination, highlighting the need for vaccination in reducing the risk of severe disease and subsequent COVID-19-related hospitalization across all population groups. Background: Computerized clinical decision support systems are used by clinicians at the point of care to improve quality of healthcare processes (prescribing error prevention, adherence to clinical guidelines, etc.) and clinical outcomes (preventive, therapeutic, and diagnostics). Attempts to summarize results of computerized clinical decision support systems to support prescription in primary care have been challenging, and most systematic reviews and meta-analyses failed due to an extremely high degree of heterogeneity present among the included primary studies. The aim of our study will be to synthesize the evidence, considering all methodological factors that could explain these differences, and build an evidence and gap map to identify important remaining research questions. Methods: A literature search will be conducted from January 2010 onwards in MEDLINE, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases. Two reviewers will independently screen all citations, full text, and abstract data. The study methodological quality and risk of bias will be appraised using appropriate tools if applicable. A flow diagram with the screened studies will be presented, and all included studies will be displayed using interactive evidence and gap maps. Results will be reported in accordance with recommendations from the Campbell Collaboration on the development of evidence and gap maps. Discussion: Evidence behind computerized clinical decision support systems to support prescription use in primary care has so far been difficult to be synthesized. Evidence and gap maps represent an innovative approach that has emerged and is increasingly being used to address a broader research question, where multiple types of intervention and outcomes reported may be evaluated. Broad inclusion criteria have been chosen with regard to study designs, in order to collect all available information. Regarding the limitations, we will only include English and Spanish language studies from the last 10 years, we will not perform a grey literature search, and we will not carry out a meta-analysis due to the predictable heterogeneity of available studies. In this letter, we study the impact of the temperature on the resistive switching effect of TiN/Ti/HfO 2 /W metal–insulator-metal devices. An analysis of the conduction mechanisms is made, with the low resistance state being ruled by nearest neighbor hopping, while the conduction in the high resistance state is dominated by Schottky emission. Taking into account the filamentary mechanism behind the resistive switching effect, a thorough analysis of the Schottky emission allows for the calculation of the gap between conductive filament tip and metal electrode in the high resistance state. We report an increase of this gap when temperature lowers below a certain value. Self-management of blood glucose level is part and parcel of diabetes treatment, which involves invasive, painful, and uncomfortable methods. A proper non-invasive blood glucose monitor (NIBGM) is therefore desirable to deal better with it. Microwave resonators can potentially be used for such a purpose. Following the positive results from an in vitro previous work, a portable device based upon a microwave resonator was developed and assessed in a multicenter proof of concept. Its electrical response was analyzed when an individual's tongue was placed onto it. The study was performed with 352 individuals during their oral glucose tolerance tests, having four measurements per individual. The findings revealed that the accuracy must be improved before the diabetes community can make real use of the device. However, the relationship between the measuring parameter and the individual's blood glucose level is coherent with that from previous works, although with higher data dispersion. This is reflected in correlation coefficients between glycemia and the measuring magnitude consistently negative, although small, for the different datasets analyzed. Further research is proposed, focused on system improvements, individual calibration, and multitechnology approach. The mesquite tree (Prosopis laevigata) is characteristic of the vegetation in the arid regions of Mexico and other parts of the world. This tree has socioeconomic value for its seeds are used to produce flour and to feed small species livestock in rural homes backyards (named solares. in Mexico). Mesquite is also valued for its flowers and wood. The objective of the study was to quantify the pod yield of mesquite (kg MS ha-1), characterizing its morphology and analyze its chemical composition in six municipalities of the Potosino highlands of México. The experimental design was completely random, with a sample size of three trees per municipality, in six municipalities of the state of San Luis Potosí. The morphological characterization and the evaluation of the chemical composition allowed to identify three variants (A, B, C) of mesquite pods. The estimated mesquite pod yield was 3.7 Mg ha-1 at an average density of 194 trees per hectare. The normal diameter (DN) was the variable that determined the response in the pod yield (R2=0.927; p£0.05). The average mesquite pod yield was considered appropriate, given the prevailing climatic conditions in the region (400 mm precipitation and 18 °C mean temperature). Regardless of the variant, the best attributes of the mesquite pod were high content of non-structural carbohydrates (48.7%), medium level of protein (9.1%), and low level (26.7%) of neutral detergent fiber (FDN). The values are comparable to those of other conventional ingredients used for feeding cattle, therefore, they can be recommended to complement the diet of minor livestock in the Potosino highlands. The model developed to estimate pod yield of the mesquite tree (P. laevigata) from its normal diameter and height was reliable (>90%) in these municipalities and conditions of the state of San Luis Potosi, Mexico. With high temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell systems gradually penetrating the commercial market, material manufacturing processes demand re-evaluation for big scale production. Three different methods for electrode production are compared in terms of their suitability and performance. Homogeneity, reproducibility and durability of coated electrodes using hydrogen as well as wet reformate fuel in selected cases are investigated. This shows that the slot-die process has clear advantages in comparison to spraying and tape casting with regard to upscaling potential and film homogeneity. Abstract Global studies have assessed the importance of elastic thickness (T e) on orogenic evolution, showing that the style and nature of upper crustal shortening are influenced by the inherited lithospheric strength. Thus, pioneer works have identified that the upper crustal deformation style in the easternmost sector of the Central Andes in South America are related to the elastic thickness (T e). There, the thick-skinned and pure-shear style of Santa Bárbara system was initially related to the existence of low T e values. In contrast, the thin-skinned and simple-shear style of deformation in the Subandean system involves high T e values. However, more recent T e studies in the Central Andes present conflicting results which lead to question this straightforward relation. Results from these studies show a strong dependence on the applied methodology hampering the general understanding of the lithospheric thermo-mechanical state of the Central Andes. To contribute to this issue, we perform a high-resolution T e map, using forward modeling by solving flexural equation of infinite plate model in two dimensions. To achieve this, the crust-mantle interface was calculated using a high-resolution gravity anomaly dataset which combines satellite and terrestrial data, and an average density contrast. Additionally, the gravity anomaly and the foreland basin depth in the Central Andes were best predicted by considering that lower crustal rocks fill the space deflected downward in the plate model. The obtained T e values show an inverse correlation with previous heat flow studies, and a strong spatial correlation with the styles and mechanisms of deformation in the easternmost sector of the Central Andes. In the Santa Bárbara system T e values less than 10 km predominate, whereas in the Subandean system high T e values were observed. Such high values correlate with the orogenic curvature and with an shallower gravity Moho zone, which breaks the regional trend of the Central Andes. This shallower gravity Moho is linked to a high-gravity anomaly located in the east part of the Eastern Cordillera and Subandean system. These results are also correlated with a high-velocity zone in the upper mantle previously found by receiver functions studies. This correlation could indicate changes in the properties of the lower crustal rocks that justify the shallower gravity Moho zone and explain in part the highest T e values. Cheese whey is a byproduct of the cheese industry and contains high concentrations of organic matter. Anaerobic digestion (AD) technology is an attractive solution to whey disposal since it allows the reduction of organic matter and simultaneously generates energy via biogas. The biological degradation of cheese whey is characterized by an unstable operation. A critical operational issue in the AD treatment of cheese whey is the tendency of rapid acidification of the waste requiring robust monitoring and control systems for reliable and efficient operation. Recent studies show that techniques based on fractal analysis of time series can be used for the indirect monitoring of critical variables of AD process (i. e., COD, VFA and methane production) for agro-industrial wastewaters. In this work, the application of the fractal analysis of pH time series obtained from an up-flow digester for cheese whey treatment is presented. The results suggest that fractal analysis can be applied to the indirect monitoring of a representative and high strength dairy wastewater. Furthermore, although the complex phenomena underlying in pH in the AD of cheese whey, the fractal analysis can unveil correlations of fractal parameters with key process variables. Neurocysticercosis is a nervous system infection caused by the larvae (cysticercus) of the pork tapeworm (Taenia solium). Neurocysticercosis is the primary cause of acquired epilepsy worldwide and, therefore, a global public health problem. On the other hand, T. solium taeniasis/cysticercosis is one of very few infectious diseases considered to be potentially eradicable. Recently, a large-scale elimination program in Tumbes, Peru, demonstrated the feasibility of interrupting transmission. Based on these advances, a series of initial guidelines are proposed aimed at setting out the foundations for regional and national taeniasis/cysticercosis control programs, with simple and feasible local interventions as a starting point. Hyperspectral imaging requires handling a large amount of multidimensional spectral information. Hyperspectral image acquisition, processing and storage are computationally and economically expensive and in most cases, slow processes. In recent years, optical architectures have been developed for acquisition of spectral information in compressed form by using a small set of measurements coded by a spatial modulator. This work formulates a processing scheme that allows the measurements acquired by such compressive sampling systems to be used to perform spectral detection of targets by adapting traditional detection algorithms for use in the compressive sampling model and shows that the performance is comparable with that obtained by detection processes without compression. The Spearman's law of diminishing returns (SLODR) contends that a general factor of cognitive ability ( g ) is more efficient to account for individual differences in intellectual performance in low ability than in high ability groups. Several works support the SLODR, albeit other studies have questioned it with one of the main criticisms being the splitting up between low and high ability groups. This study evaluates the SLODR with data from the chess domain with the Amsterdam chess test (ACT). Chess ability relates closely with several cognitive abilities that load in g , whereas the Elo chess rating is a robust quantitative indicator of chess skill that is suitable to determine differentiated ability groups. A structural equation model with five subtests from the ACT for low and high Elo chess rating groups indicated a better overall model fit for the low ability group. Factor invariance analyses about the variance explained by g , residual variances, and g -loadings, indicated that the highest variation between low and high chess ability groups arose in the model constraining equal g -loadings between both groups. For optimal application of Nesidiocoris tenuis as a biological control agent, adequate field management and programmed mass rearing are essential. Mathematical models are useful tools for predicting the temperature-dependent developmental rate of the predator. In this study, the linear model and nonlinear models Logan type III, Lactin and Brière were estimated at constant temperatures and validated at alternating temperatures and under field conditions. N. tenuis achieved complete development from egg to adult at constant temperatures between 15 and 35°C with high survivorship (>80%) in the range 18–32°C. The total developmental time decreased from a maximum at 15°C (76.74 d) to a minimum at 33°C (12.67 d) and after that, increased to 35°C (13.98 d). Linear and nonlinear developmental models all had high accuracy (Ra2 >0.86). The maximum developmental rate was obtained between 31.9°C (Logan type III and Brière model for N1) and 35.6°C (for the egg stage in the Brière model). Optimal survival and the highest developmental rate fell within the range 27–30°C. The field validation revealed that the Logan type III and Lactin models offered the best predictions (95.0 and 94.5%, respectively). The data obtained on developmental time and mortality at different temperatures are useful for mass rearing this predator, and the developmental models are valuable for using N. tenuis as a biological control agent. The Mexican rice borer, Eoreuma loftini (Dyar) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), is one of the most important pests of sugarcane, Saccharum officinarum L., in Mexico, but the population dynamics of the adult are not known for conditions in the state of Morelos. During the 2013 season, 11,282 adult males were caught, with the largest number of adults trapped on the eastern and western sides of the state. Two population peaks were observed, the first during the dry season (February-June) and the second during the rainy season (October- December). This paper presents a transversal study with a predominantly qualitative methodological profile that describes the evolution of academic self-concepts during adolescence. The sample consisted of 150 young people from various schools in the state of Sinaloa: fifty students per age group (twelve, fifteen, and eighteen years old), divided equally between males and females. Three instruments were used: a) a Piagetian critical clinical interview, b) self-concept questionnaire form 5, and c) profile of self-perceptions. The results show that change undergone in the academic self-concept has a flexible nature during adolescence and decreases at age fifteen; as in other studies, no differences by gender were seen. In spite of their provisional nature, the results may serve in the design of strategies that contribute to configuring adolescents' self-concept, that improve their performance as students, and that stimulate their personal development. The description of the scenes that draw the acquisition and transmission of their gifts become the study universe. This white paper states that in ritual specialists, the specificity of each other is in the process of collective knowledge that establishes them. Its recognition is forged not only in the techniques and ideas that stigmatize those who do "well" or that promote the "bad". Instead, this is where specialists develop relationships with themselves and with the community. That is, the mutual recognition is given to the type of relationship that is established and named it names. Human taeniasis as well as porcine and human cysticercosis — caused by the pork tapeworm Taenia solium — are ancient diseases. The fact that pigs were considered impure in the ancient Greece and that the Koran prohibited the consumption of pork, were likely related to the knowledge that cysticercosis may affect swine. Evidence suggests that human cysticercosis was also present in the ancient Egypt and Rome. During the Renaissance, the causative agent was properly identified and human cases were recognized. Confirmation that both taeniasis and cysticercosis were caused by the same parasite was provided during the 19th Century by German pathologists. During the 20th Century, bouts of human cysticercosis in non-endemic regions left us valuable lessons on the mechanisms of disease acquisition and spread. These included a large series of neurocysticercosis cases in the United Kingdom that occurred after the return of troops stationed in India (which demonstrated that symptoms may occur years after infection), the epidemic of cysticercosis-related epilepsy in the Ekari people of Papua New Guinea occurring after the gift of pigs with cysticercosis received from Indonesia (demonstrating the fast establishment of endemic transmission and the impact of cysticercosis in epilepsy frequency), and the occurrence of neurocysticercosis among members of an Orthodox Jewish community of New York City, related to Latin American Taenia carriers working in their houses (highlighting the fact that cysticercosis transmission do not require the presence of infected pigs). Although, electromechanical transients or transient stability studies are fundamental for the understanding of the dynamical behavior of electrical power systems, this type of studies are usually ignored when dealing with industrial power systems. Analysis of this type of studies is a valuable source of information for determining the need for corrective actions with the aim of improving the overall system's performance. In this paper, the dynamic behavior of an industrial power system with on-site generation and interconnected with transmission system of the public utility, following the fault occurrence on the interconnection transformer, is analyzed. Background Coronary plaque size modification, by either local (device) or systemic treatments, has been the target for many years. Methods From ABSORB Cohort A (Absorb BVS 1.0), ABSORB Cohort B (Absorb BVS 1.1), SPIRIT FIRST (Multi-Link Vision vs. Xience V) & SPIRIT II (Xience V vs. Taxus), we calculated the total plaque area (vessel minus lumen area – thus it comprises both compartments – the plaque behind struts and the neointima.) changes by IVUS. Results A total of 313 patients were included. Comparison-at-6-month follow-up: All devices induced an increase in the total plaque area. The largest increase occurred with Vision and Taxus stents as compared to other devices [Absorb BVS (1.0 and 1.1) and Xience V], (p = 0.0002). Comparison-at-2-year follow-up: Absorb BVS 1.1 had a larger increase from post procedure in total plaque compared to Absorb BVS 1.0, Xience V and Taxus (p = 0.0499). However, in Absorb BVS 1.1 total plaque showed a reduction of 2.2% from 1 to 3 years. Specifically, the total plaque in the sequential cohorts of Absorb BVS 1.1 increased 16.2% from baseline to 2 years (Cohort B1) while at 3 years this increase is only 5% compared to baseline (Cohort B2). Conclusions Local devices affect coronary plaque size differently and it depends on the platform (metallic vs. polymeric) and on whether it is a bare — or drug eluting stent. Background A major goal of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination is to prevent severe outcomes (hospitalizations and deaths). We estimated the effectiveness of messenger RNA (mRNA) and ChAdOx1 COVID-19 vaccines against severe outcomes in 4 Canadian provinces between December 2020 and September 2021. Methods We conducted this multiprovincial, retrospective, test-negative study among community-dwelling adults aged ≥18 years in Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia, and Manitoba using linked provincial databases and a common study protocol. Multivariable logistic regression was used to estimate province-specific vaccine effectiveness against COVID-19 hospitalization and/or death. Estimates were pooled using random-effects models. Results We included 2 508 296 tested participants, with 31 776 COVID-19 hospitalizations and 5842 deaths. Vaccine effectiveness was 83% after a first dose and 98% after a second dose against both hospitalization and death (separately). Against severe outcomes, effectiveness was 87% (95% confidence interval [CI], 71%–94%) ≥84 days after a first dose of mRNA vaccine, increasing to 98% (95% CI, 96%–99%) ≥112 days after a second dose. Vaccine effectiveness against severe outcomes for ChAdOx1 was 88% (95% CI, 75%–94%) ≥56 days after a first dose, increasing to 97% (95% CI, 91%–99%) ≥56 days after a second dose. Lower 1-dose effectiveness was observed for adults aged ≥80 years and those with comorbidities, but effectiveness became comparable after a second dose. Two doses of vaccines provided very high protection for both homologous and heterologous schedules and against Alpha, Gamma, and Delta variants. The aim of this research was to study the effects of seasons (rainy and dry) on the composition of the fatty acids (FAs) in milk of Creole goats in a semiintensive production system. Milk sampling was carried out in the dry season (June) and just after the rainy season (November) in an arid region of Baja California Sur, Mexico. The goat diet was composed of native species it grazed on in the rangeland, as well as hayed forages with some supplements containing approximately equal amounts of sorghum and maize. The results for different types of FAs in goat milk showed that there were no significant differences in saturated, polyunsaturated, branched, and omega-6 FAs, with differences for monounsaturated and omega-3 FAs. In terms of individual FAs, the majority of changes were not significant. The FA constituents showed that significant differences existed for C12:0, C23:0, C14:1 n-5, C14:1 n-7, C18:1 n-9, C18:3 n-3 cis, C22:5 n-3, and C22:6 n-3, and 2 branched fatty acids, C12:0 iso and C15:0 anteiso. The rest showed a trend of higher quantities of FAs during the rainy season, but it was not significant. [Re(CO)3([9]aneS3)][BAr′4] ( 1), prepared by reaction of ReBr(CO)5, 1,4,7-trithiacyclononane ([9]aneS3) and NaBAr′4, forms stable, soluble supramolecular adducts with chloride ( 2), bromide, methanosulfonate ( 3) and fluoride ( 4) anions. These new species were characterized by IR, NMR spectroscopy and, for 2 and 3, also by X-ray diffraction. The results of the solid state structure determinations indicate the formation of CH⋅⋅⋅X hydrogen bonds between the anion (X) and the exo-CH groups of the [9]aneS3 ligand, in accord with the relatively large shifts found by 1H NMR spectroscopy in dichloromethane solution for those hydrogens. The stability of the chloride adduct contrasts with the lability of the [9]aneS3 ligand in allyldicarbonyl molybdenum complexes recently studied by us. With fluoride, in dichloromethane solution, a second, minor neutral dimeric species 5 is formed in addition to 4. In 4, the deprotonation of a CH group of the [9]aneS3 ligand, accompanied by CS bond cleavage and dimerization, afforded 5, featuring bridging thiolates. Compounds [Mo(η3-methallyl)(CO)2(TpyN)][BAr′4] ( 6) and [Mo(η3-methallyl)(CO)2(TpyCH)][BAr′4] ( 7) were synthesized by the reactions of [MoCl(η3-methallyl)(CO)2(NCMe)2], NaBAr′4 and tris(2-pyridyl)amine (TpyN) or tris(2-pyridyl)methane (TpyCH) respectively, and characterized by IR and 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy in solution, and by X-ray diffraction in the solid state. Compound 6 undergoes facile substitution of one of the 2-pyridyl groups by chloride, bromide, and methanosulfonate anions. Stable supramolecular adducts were formed between 7 and chloride, bromide, iodide, nitrate, and perrhenate anions. The solid state structures of these adducts ( 12- 16) were determined by X-ray diffraction. Binding constants in dichloromethane were calculated from 1H NMR titration data for all the new supramolecular adducts. The signal of the bridgehead CH group is the one that undergoes a more pronounced downfield shift when tetrabutylammonium chloride was added to 7, whereas smaller shifts were found for the 2-pyridyl C(3)H groups. Solar energy has become one of the most promising renewable energies and is the most widely used nowadays. In order to achieve an optimum performance, both photovoltaic and solar thermal applications are required to track the position of the sun throughout the day and year in the most effective way possible to avoid a high negative impact on the system efficiency. The present paper attempts to describe a novel semipassive solar tracking concentrator (SPSTC) in which, in order to track the sun, two independent arrays of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) prisms are implemented to refract sunlight by rotating said prisms, thus being able to redirect solar radiation as desired. The first set is responsible for eliminating one of the directional components of the solar radiation; the task is achieved by rotating the prisms within the array at a specific angle. The second set deals with another of the sunlight's directional components, transforming its direction into a completely perpendicular pattern to the array. Having downward vertical radiation makes it possible to implement a stationary Fresnel lens to concentrate the solar radiation for any application desired. Increasing proofs that the global climate is changing exist, principally for the variations of temperature and no knowing to those changes that are produced the answers of the plants. The objective of the present work was to estimate the influence that would cause to itself on the flowering of sugar cane to increase the temperature at the heartland of Cuba. The variety used C86-12 itself for it (the half a flowering's indicator), the one that drank in 26 points located in different representative areas of the region of study, to the one that determined to him his intensity of flowering and associated with data of the half a temperature of the month of September (variable that the flowering at the region limits) using two scenes (normal and I enlarge 2 Celsius ). The valors of flowering and half a temperature of the region of study were represented in maps, constructed using the program Surfe v 8, 0 with the method of little grate Kriging. As a result it was found that the bigger quantity of bloomed varieties is produced at the mountains and bordering areas, under the normal oscillation of temperature, but when this increases 2 Celsius, the optimal limits itself toward the higher areas, the ones that more are scarce at the survey area, therefore the zones where a flowering is not produced, increase which limits the use of this region for the improvement of the cultivation in Cuba if they produce 2 Celsius's increases in the half a temperature of the month of September. The objective of the present work was to define the influence that you produce the photo period and the solar radiation on the date of flowering of the sugar cane with intentions of his use in the genetic improvement of the cultivation at the central region of Cuba. Abstract Introduction: Traffic accidents (TA) cause 1.23 million deaths each year worldwide while between 20 and 50 million persons are injured each year. In 2011 in Medellin, Colombia, there were 307 traffic deaths and 23,835 injured with 411 accidents for each 10,000 vehicles. Objective: The purpose of the study was to describe the epidemiologic and clinical characteristics, as well as the quality of life and disability outcomes for those injured in traffic accidents in Medellin. Methods: This prospective, descriptive, cross-sectional study collected data from 834 patients that were classified with the New Injury Severity Score (NISS) , the WHODAS-II (Disability Assessment) Scale and the SF-36 Health Survey. Results: Three-fourths (75.8%) of the patients were male. Eighty-one percent of patients were involved in motorcycle accidents, with 45.6% suffering moderate trauma, and 32.6% experiencing severe trauma. Of the patients with severe trauma, 8.5% were not wearing helmets. Half of the sample (49.7%) injured their extremities. The WHODAS-II domains most affected were: Activities outside the home (62.0 %), Housework (54.3%) and Moving in one's environment (45.2 %). Quality of life areas affected were: Physical role (20.3), Body pain (37.3 %) Emotional role (44.1%), Physical functioning (52.6 %). Conclusions: Patients with more severe injuries had higher levels of disability and a worse quality of life. Motorcycles made up a large proportion of traffic accidents in this city and mitigation strategies to reduce this public health problem should particularly focus on this high-risk group. Abstract: Objectives: We compared the incidence of late increase in hs-cTnI between ACS and non-ACS patients treated with standard of care with or without darapladib. Methods: A total of 323 (161 ACS and 162 non-ACS patients) were included. High sensitivity troponin I was measured at baseline and at 4, 13, 26 and 52 weeks. Results: ACS patients had statistically higher hs-cTnI values during longer term follow-up at which these patients were no longer in the acute setting of myocardial ischemia, but were regarded to have stable CAD (mean hsTnI value in ACS patients: 1.180 versus 0.886 ng/L in non-ACS patients, p = 0.02). Multivariate logistic regression revealed three predictors of any 2-fold increase in hs-cTnI levels compared to the previous visit when interactions were not considered. Treatment with darapladib (adjusted OR 0.53; 95% CI: 0.30–0.92) and initial presentation with ACS (adjusted OR 0.42; 95% CI: 0.23–0.77) were associated with less frequent occurrence of a 2-fold increase in hs-cTnI levels. In contrast, diabetes was associated with a higher incidence of 2-fold increases in hs-cTnI levels (adjusted OR 2.20; 95% CI: 1.04–4.64). Logistic regression to predict any 2-fold increase in hs-cTnI by ACS status showed that in the ACS group, treatment with darapladib decreased the risk of elevation of hs-cTnI (OR 0.219; 95% CI: 0.087, 0.553, p = 0.0013). Conclusion: In patients with ACS, treatment with darapladib is associated with less increase in cardiac troponin I compared to standard of care alone. Flowering is a concatenation of physiological complex processes in which various factors take place. The objective of the present work was to define the influence of the environment-genotypes interaction on the flowering of sugar cane, for its use in the genetic improvement of crops. 80 varieties were used for this purpose, which were planted in three representative areas of the Central region of Cuba (Guayos, Buenos Aires and Mayarí), and some flowering variables, interesting for the improvement of the crop, were studied (intensity, date and masculine fertility) during 12 years (from 1996 to 2007). Years were grouped for its similitude of bloomed varieties just like genotypes, the CLUSTER analysis was used in all cases. An ANOVA factorial (genotype, locality and year) was applied to all genotypes that bloomed at last one year in the three localities, in order to define the environment-genotype interaction of the flowering variables. In cases in which interaction occurred it was represented using the method of main additive effects and multiplicative interactions (AMMI). As a result, we found that locality was the main source of variation, the one that had the highest influence in the majority of flowering variable in the studied area. Different variables have been proposed to explain the migration phenomenon; recently, environmental degradation has been increasingly prevalent in the literature as a determinant of migration. According to Jha and Wha lley (2003), the environment-migration relationship can be theoretically demonstrated using the traditional Harris-Todaro (1970) model of rural and urban migration, in which the unemployment variable, if interpreted as damage, can be replaced by pollution. The poor flowering and the differences in the date of exit of the flower in commercial varieties of sugar cane at Guayos's locality make hard the realization of crossbreedings, which is why objective of this work is to propose a strategy that it enable to increase them. Several experiments, that they executed themselves in areas of the seat of the National Center of Hybridization, located in Guayos got on for it and included two dates of plantation, two dose of fertilizers, two methods of sheets, use of irrigation and Ethrel in the inductive stage and Fitomás-E, in the stage after inductive of the flower. You used a control with the methodology in use of handling of the flower for this locality for all of the cases, and they measured the bloomed varieties, intensity of flowering and date or days to start of flowering, the one with which an analysis of variance was used and when it was significant the stockings through Tukey's proof compared . As a result it was found that flowering increased in with use irrigation, than the Fitomás-E you advanced the date of exit of the flower, in the meantime than July's and January's plantations, the cut of sheets, the application of Ethrel and of fertilizers, you delay it. These combined results can be used to enlarge the time of flowering and served as base stops a strategy that it enables proposes the quantity of crossbreedings at Guayos's locality increasing. Traffic accidents (TA) are a problem for global public health and may cause serious consequences on people and generate high economic costs. Causes include excessive speed, inexperience and driver distraction and lack of distance between vehicles. In Medellin, there are few studies on TA. The objective was to describe characteristics of time, place and vehicle of the 25,635 TA occurred in Medellín (1999-2008) that caused injuries that were treated at a third level hospital. It is a retrospective study of 29,676 secondary data attentions. The TA occurred more frequently in the evenings, weekends, resulting in motorcycles and in the center of the city. Overall mortality was 1.5%. Knowledge of the variables involved in the TA can facilitate the formulation of specific policies to reduce the increasing road accidents in the city. New molybdenum(0), molybdenum(II), manganese(I), rhenium(I), silver(I), and copper(I) complexes with the 1,3,5-tris(thiocyanatomethyl)mesitylene [Ms(CH2SCN)3] ligand have been synthesized and characterized by IR, NMR, and by X-ray diffraction (except for the rhenium complex). The Ms(CH2SCN)3 ligand coordinated with the molybdenum, manganese, and rhenium carbonyl fragments as a tripodal chelate. With copper and silver, dimeric dicationic species were obtained instead, with the Ms(CH2SCN)3 ligand acting simultaneously as a bidentate chelate and bridge. The [(Cu(Ms(CH2SCN)3))2][BAr'4]2 (BAr'4 = tetra(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)borate) product is an excellent catalyst for cyclopropanation and aziridination of alkenes and cyclopropenation ot alkynes by means of carbene- and nitrene-transfer reactions. [Display omitted] In this work, we have studied the set and the reset transitions in hafnium oxide-based metal–insulator-metal ReRAM devices using a capacitor discharge. Instead of applying a conventional voltage or current signal, we have discharged a capacitor through the devices to perform both transitions. In this way, both transitions are shown to be controllable. An accumulative process is observed if we apply consecutive discharges, and, when increasing the capacitor voltage in each discharge, the transitions between both resistance states are complete. Abstract: Advances in the field of neurocysticercosis continue to shape our understanding of the disease and our efforts to control it. Several attempts have been made to eradicate the disease with active interventions such as changing domestic pig-raising practices, mass chemotherapy of porcine cysticercosis and taeniasis, selective detection and treatment of taeniasis, and community health education. Moreover, ongoing progress in the diagnosis of taeniasis and the development of a porcine vaccine against cysticercosis in Australia, Mexico and Peru has yielded at least one effective vaccine that is currently available. Thus far, however, attempted interventions have only been successful in temporarily disrupting transmission of the disease. Controlled data on the efficacy and acceptability of the different interventions is urgently needed to provide a base-line schematic for intervention which could later be tailored to each particular endemic scenario. We report the case of a 57 year-old female patient with a history of exposure to fertilizes and thrombocyosis under treatment with hidroxiurea, who suffers a generalizated dermatoses characterized by nodules and papules, associated with systemic symptoms; laboratory examination showed pancitopenia, blasts in peripheral blood and increased LDH.
