The detailed feeding and feedback mechanisms of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are not yet well known. For low-luminosity and obscured AGN, as well as late-type galaxies, determining the central black hole (BH) masses is challenging. Our goal with the GATOS sample is to study circum-nuclear regions and better estimate BH masses with more precision than scaling relations offer. Using ALMA's high spatial resolution, we resolve CO(3-2) emissions within ~100 pc around the supermassive black hole (SMBH) in seven GATOS galaxies to estimate their BH masses when sufficient gas is present. We study seven bright ($L_{AGN}(14-150\mathrm{keV}) \geq 10^{42}\mathrm{erg/s}$), nearby (<28 Mpc) galaxies from the GATOS core sample. For comparison, we searched the literature for previous BH mass estimates and made additional calculations using the \mbh~ - $\sigma$ relation and the fundamental plane of BH activity. We developed a supervised machine learning method to estimate BH masses from position-velocity diagrams or first-moment maps using ALMA CO(3-2) observations. Numerical simulations with a wide range of parameters created the training, validation, and test sets. Seven galaxies provided enough gas for BH mass estimations: NGC4388, NGC5506, NGC5643, NGC6300, NGC7314, NGC7465, and NGC~7582. Our BH masses, ranging from 6.39 to 7.18 log$(M_{BH}/M_\odot)$, align with previous estimates. Additionally, our machine learning method provides robust error estimations with confidence intervals and offers greater potential than scaling relations. This work is a first step toward an automated \mbh estimation method using machine learning.

Understanding the processes that drive the morphology and kinematics of molecular gas in galaxies is crucial for comprehending star formation and, ultimately, galaxy evolution. Using data obtained with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), we study the behavior of the warm molecular gas at temperatures of hundreds of Kelvin and the cold molecular gas at tens of Kelvin in the galaxy MCG$-$05$-$23$-$16, which hosts an active galactic nucleus (AGN). Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images of this spheroidal galaxy, classified in the optical as S0, show a dust lane resembling a nuclear spiral and a surrounding ring. These features are also detected in CO(2$-$1) and H2, and their morphologies and kinematics are consistent with rotation plus local inward gas motions along the kinematic minor axis in the presence of a nuclear bar. The H2 transitions 0-0 S(3), 0-0 S(4), and 0-0 S(5), which trace warmer and more excited gas, show more disrupted kinematics than 0-0 S(1) and 0-0 S(2), including clumps of high-velocity dispersion (of up to $\sim$ 160 km/s), in regions devoid of CO(2$-$1). The kinematics of one of these clumps, located at $\sim$ 350 pc westward from the nucleus, are consistent with outflowing gas, possibly driven by localized star formation traced by Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) emission at 11.3 ${\mu}$m. Overall, we observe a stratification of the molecular gas, with the colder gas located in the nuclear spiral, ring, and connecting arms, while most warmer gas with higher velocity-dispersion fills the inter-arm space. The compact jet, approximately 200 pc in size, detected with Very Large Array (VLA) observations, does not appear to significantly affect the distribution and kinematics of the molecular gas, possibly due to its limited intersection with the molecular gas disc., Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures, 2. We analyze JWST MIRI/MRS observations of the infrared PAH bands in the nuclear and circumnuclear regions of local AGN from the GATOS Survey. In this work, we examine the PAH properties in the circumnuclear regions of AGN and AGN-outflows, and compare them to those in star-forming regions and the innermost regions of AGN. This study employs 4.9-28.1 micron sub-arcsecond angular resolution data to investigate the properties of PAH in three nearby sources (DL~30-40 Mpc). Our findings align with previous JWST studies, showing that the central regions of AGN show a larger fraction of neutral PAH molecules (i.e. elevated 11.3/6.2 and 11.3/7.7 PAH ratios) compared to star-forming galaxies. We find that the AGN might affect not only the PAH population in the innermost region but also in the extended regions up to ~kpc scales. By comparing our observations to PAH diagnostic diagrams, we find that, in general, regions located in the projected direction of the AGN-outflow occupy similar positions on the PAH diagnostic diagrams as those of the innermost regions of AGN. Star-forming regions that are not affected by the AGN in these galaxies share the same part of the diagram as Star-forming galaxies. We examine the potential of the PAH-H2 diagram to disentangle AGN versus star-forming activity. Our results suggest that in Sy-like AGN, illumination and feedback from the AGN might affect the PAH population at nuclear and kpc scales, in particular, the ionization state of the PAH grains. However, PAH sizes are rather similar. The carriers of the ionized PAH bands (6.2 and 7.7 micron) are less resilience than those of neutral PAH bands (11.3 micron), which might be particularly important for strongly AGN-host coupled systems. Therefore, caution must be applied when using PAH bands as star-formation rate indicators in these systems even at kpc scales, with the ionized ones being more affected by the AGN., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 21 pages, 13 Figures

We present observations of the type-2 Seyfert NGC7172 obtained with the medium-resolution spectrometer (MRS) of the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) on board of the JWST. This galaxy hosts one of the lowest ionised gas mass outflow rates (Mout~0.005 M/yr) in a sample of six AGN with similar bolometric luminosities (log Lbol~44erg/s) within the Galactic Activity, Torus and Outflow Survey (GATOS). We aim to understand the properties of the ionised gas outflow, mainly using the emission lines from the neon transitions, that cover a broad range of ionisation potentials (IP) from ~20 eV to ~130 eV. We applied parametric and non-parametric methods to characterise the line emission and kinematics. The low excitation lines (IP<25eV, e.g.[NeII]) trace the rotating disc emission. The high excitation lines (IP>90eV, e.g.[NeV]), which are likely photoionised exclusively by the AGN, are expanding in the direction nearly perpendicular to the disc of the galaxy, with maximum projected velocities of ~350-500 km/s. In particular, [NeV] and [NeVI] lines reveal a biconical ionised gas outflow emerging N-S from the nuclear region, extending at least ~2.5"N and 3.8"S (projected distance of ~450 and 680 pc). Most of the emission arising in the northern part of the cone was not previously detected due to obscuration. Given the almost face-on orientation of the outflow and the almost edge-on orientation of the galaxy, NGC7172 may be a case of weak coupling. Nevertheless, we found evidence for positive feedback in two distinct outflowing clumps at projected distances of 3.1" and 4.3" (i.e. ~560 and 780 pc) SW from the AGN. We estimated a star formation rate in these regions using the [NeII] and [NeIII] luminosities of 0.08 M/yr, that is ~10% of that found in the circumnuclear ring. The ionisation cones of NGC5728 have a deficit of molecular gas based on millimetre observations of CO(2-1) emission. Although photoionisation from the active nucleus may lead to suppression of this transition, warm molecular gas can still be present. We report the detection of eight mid-infrared rotational H$_2$ lines throughout the central kiloparsec, including the ionisation cones, using integral field spectroscopic observations with JWST/MIRI MRS. The H$_2$ line ratios, characteristic of a power-law temperature distribution, indicate that the gas is warmest where it enters the ionisation cone through disk rotation, suggestive of shock excitation. In the nucleus, where the data can be combined with an additional seven ro-vibrational H$_2$ transitions, we find that moderate velocity (30 km s$^{-1}$) shocks in dense ($10^5$ cm$^{-3}$) gas, irradiated by an external UV field ($G_0 = 10^3$), do provide a good match to the full set. The warm molecular gas in the ionisation cone that is traced by the H$_2$ rotational lines has been heated to temperatures $>200$ K. Outside of the ionisation cone the molecular gas kinematics are undisturbed. However, within the ionisation cone, the kinematics are substantially perturbed, indicative of a radial flow, but one that is quantitatively different from the ionised lines. We argue that this outflow is in the plane of the disk, implying a short 50 pc acceleration zone up to speeds of about 400 km s$^{-1}$ followed by an extended deceleration over $\sim$700 pc where it terminates. The deceleration is due to both the radially increasing galaxy mass, and mass-loading as ambient gas in the disk is swept up., Comment: A&A accepted; 16 pages

We use a sample of 64 nearby (D=7-45 Mpc) disk galaxies including 45 AGN and 19 non-AGN, that have high spatial resolution multiline CO observations obtained with the ALMA and/or PdBI arrays to study the distribution of cold molecular gas in their circumunuclear disks (CND). We analyze whether the concentration of cold molecular gas changes as a function of the X-ray luminosity in the 2-10 keV range ($L_{\rm X}$). We also study the concentration of the hot molecular gas using NIR data obtained for the H2 1-0S(1) line. We find a turnover in the distribution of the cold molecular gas concentration as a function of $L_{\rm X}$ with a breakpoint which divides the sample into two branches: the AGN build-up branch ($L_{\rm X}\leq10^{41.5\pm0.3}$erg/s) and the AGN feedback branch ($L_{\rm X}\geq10^{41.5\pm0.3}$erg/s) . Lower luminosity AGN and non-AGN of the AGN build-up branch show high cold molecular gas concentrations and centrally peaked radial profiles on nuclear ($r\leq50$~pc) scales. Higher luminosity AGN of the AGN feedback branch, show a sharp decrease in the concentration of molecular gas and flat or inverted radial profiles. The cold molecular gas concentration index ($CCI$), defined as the ratio of surface densities at $r\leq50$~pc and $r\leq200$~pc , namely $CCI \equiv$~log$_{\rm 10}(\Sigma^{\rm gas}_{\rm 50}/\Sigma^{\rm gas}_{\rm 200}$), spans a factor ~4-5 between the galaxies lying at the high end of the AGN build-up branch and the galaxies of the AGN feedback branch. The concentration and radial distributions of the hot molecular gas in our sample follow less extreme trends as a function of the X-ray luminosity. The outflowing molecular gas in the circumnuclear disk (CND) of the nearby (D=14 Mpc) AGN-starburst composite galaxy NGC 1068 is considered as a manifestation of ongoing AGN feedback. The large spread of velocities from the outflowing gas is likely driving various kinds of shock chemistry across the CND. We performed a multiline molecular study using CH3OH with the aim of characterizing the gas properties probed by CH3OH in the CND of NGC 1068, and investigating its potential association with molecular shocks. Multi-transition CH3OH were imaged at the resolution of 0.''5-0.''8 with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). We performed non-LTE radiative transfer analysis coupled with a Bayesian inference process in order to determine the gas properties such as the gas volume density and the gas kinetic temperature. The gas densities traced by CH3OH point to $\sim 10^{6}$ cm\textsuperscript{-3} across all the CND regions. The gas kinetic temperature cannot be well constrained in any of the CND regions though the inferred temperature is likely low ($\lesssim 100$ K).The low gas temperature traced by CH3OH suggests shocks and subsequent fast cooling as the origin of the observed gas-phase CH3OH abundance. We also note that the E-/A- isomer column density ratio inferred is fairly close to unity, which is interestingly different from the Galactic measurements in the literature. It remains inconclusive whether CH3OH exclusively traces slow and non-dissociative shocks, or whether the CH3OH abundance can actually be boosted in both fast and slow shocks.

How galaxies regulate nuclear growth through gas accretion by supermassive black holes (SMBHs) is one of the most fundamental questions in galaxy evolution. One potential way to regulate nuclear growth is through a galactic wind that removes gas from the nucleus. It is unclear whether galactic winds are powered by jets, mechanical winds, radiation, or via magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) processes. Compact obscured nuclei (CONs) represent a significant phase of galactic nuclear growth. These galaxies hide growing SMBHs or unusual starbursts in their very opaque, extremely compact (r $<$ 100 pc) centres. They are found in approximately 30 % of the luminous and ultra-luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG and ULIRG) population. Here, we present high-resolution ALMA observations ($\sim$30 mas, $\sim$5 pc) of ground-state and vibrationally excited HCN towards ESO 320-G030 (IRAS 11506-3851). ESO 320-G030 is an isolated luminous infrared galaxy known to host a compact obscured nucleus and a kiloparsec-scale molecular wind. Our analysis of these high-resolution observations excludes the possibility of a starburst-driven wind, a mechanically or energy driven active galactic nucleus (AGN) wind, and exposes a molecular MDH wind. These results imply that the nuclear evolution of galaxies and the growth of SMBHs are similar to the growth of hot cores or protostars where gravitational collapse of the nuclear torus drives a MHD wind. Nuclear regions of ultraluminous and luminous infrared galaxies (U/LIRGs) are powered by starbursts and/or active galactic nuclei (AGNs). These regions are often obscured by extremely high columns of gas and dust. Molecular lines in the submillimeter windows have the potential to determine the physical conditions of these compact obscured nuclei (CONs). We aim to reveal the distributions of HCN and HCO$^+$ emission in local U/LIRGs and investigate whether and how they are related to galaxy properties. Using ALMA, we have conducted sensitive observations of the HCN J=3--2 and HCO$^+$ J=3--2 lines toward 23 U/LIRGs in the local Universe (z < 0.07) with a spatial resolution of ~0.3" (~50--400 pc). We detected both HCN and HCO$^+$ in 21 galaxies, only HCN in one galaxy, and neither in one galaxy. The global HCN/HCO$^+$ line ratios, averaged over scales of ~0.5--4 kpc, range from 0.4 to 2.3, with an unweighted mean of 1.1. These line ratios appear to have no systematic trend with bolometric AGN luminosity or star formation rate. The line ratio varies with position and velocity within each galaxy, with an average interquartile range of 0.38 on a spaxel-by-spaxel basis. In eight out of ten galaxies known to have outflows and/or inflows, we found spatially and kinematically symmetric structures of high line ratios. These structures appear as a collimated bicone in two galaxies and as a thin spherical shell in six galaxies. Non-LTE analysis suggests that the high HCN/HCO$^+$ line ratio in outflows is predominantly influenced by the abundance ratio. Chemical model calculations indicate that the enhancement of HCN abundance in outflows is likely due to high-temperature chemistry triggered by shock heating. The superb image quality, stability and sensitivity of the JWST permit deconvolution techniques to be pursued with a fidelity unavailable to ground-based observations. We present an assessment of several deconvolution approaches to improve image quality and mitigate effects of the complex JWST point spread function (PSF). The optimal deconvolution method is determined by using WebbPSF to simulate JWST's complex PSF and MIRISim to simulate multi-band JWST/Mid-Infrared Imager Module (MIRIM) observations of a toy model of an active galactic nucleus (AGN). Five different deconvolution algorithms are tested: (1) Kraken deconvolution, (2) Richardson-Lucy, (3) Adaptive Imaging Deconvolution Algorithm, (4) Sparse regularization with the Condat-V\~u algorithm, and (5) Iterative Wiener Filtering and Thresholding. We find that Kraken affords the greatest FWHM reduction of the nuclear source of our MIRISim observations for the toy AGN model while retaining good photometric integrity across all simulated wavebands. Applying Kraken to Galactic Activity, Torus, and Outflow Survey (GATOS) multi-band JWST/MIRIM observations of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 5728, we find that the algorithm reduces the FWHM of the nuclear source by a factor of 1.6-2.2 across all five filters. Kraken images facilitate detection of a SE to NW $\thicksim$2".5 ($\thicksim$470 pc, PA $\simeq$115\deg) extended nuclear emission, especially in the longest wavelengths. We use JWST/MIRI MRS spectroscopy of a sample of six local obscured type 1.9/2 active galactic nuclei (AGN) to compare their nuclear mid-IR absorption bands with the level of nuclear obscuration traced by X-rays. This study is the first to use sub-arcsecond angular resolution data of local obscured AGN to investigate the nuclear mid-IR absorption bands with a wide wavelength coverage (4.9-28.1 $\mu$m). All the nuclei show the 9.7 $\mu$m silicate band in absorption. We compare the strength of the 9.7 and 18 $\mu$m silicate features with torus model predictions. The observed silicate features are generally well explained by clumpy and smooth torus models. We report the detection of the 6 $\mu$m dirty water ice band (i.e., a mix of water and other molecules such as CO and CO$_2$) at sub-arcsecond scales ($\sim$0.26 arcsec at 6 $\mu$m; inner $\sim$50 pc) in a sample of local AGN with different levels of nuclear obscuration in the range log N$_{\rm H}^{\rm X-Ray}$(cm$^{-2}$)$\sim22-25$. We find a good correlation between the 6 $\mu$m water ice optical depths and N$_{\rm H}^{\rm X-Ray}$. This result indicates that the water ice absorption might be a reliable tracer of the nuclear intrinsic obscuration in AGN. The weak water ice absorption in less obscured AGN (log N$_H^{X-ray}$ (cm$^{-2}$)$\lesssim$23.0 cm$^{-2}$) might be related to the hotter dust temperature ($>$T$_{sub}^{H_2O}\sim$110 K) expected to be reached in the outer layers of the torus due to their more inhomogeneous medium. Our results suggest it might be necessary to include the molecular content, such as, H$_2$O, aliphatic hydrocarbons (CH-) and more complex PAH molecules in torus models to better constrain key parameters such as the torus covering factor (i.e. nuclear obscuration)., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 13 pages, 12 Figures

We analyze JWST/NIRSpec observations of the CO rovibrational v=1-0 band at 4.67um around the dust-embedded southern active galactic nucleus (AGN) of NGC3256 (d=40Mpc; L(IR)=10^11.6 Lsun). We classify the CO v=1-0 spectra into three categories based on the behavior of P- and R-branches of the band: (a) both branches in absorption toward the nucleus; (b) P-R asymmetry (P-branch in emission and R-branch in absorption) along the disk of the galaxy; and (c) both branches in emission in the outflow region above and below the disk. In this paper, we focus on the outflow. The CO v=1-0 emission can be explained by the vibrational excitation of CO in the molecular outflow by the bright mid-IR ~4.7um continuum from the AGN up to r~250pc. We model the ratios between the P(J+2) and R(J) transitions of the band to derive the physical properties (column density, kinetic temperature, and CO-to-H2 conversion factor, alpha_CO) of the outflowing gas. We find that the 12CO v=1-0 emission is optically thick for J<4, while the 13CO v=1-0 emission remains optically thin. From the P(2)/R(0) ratio, we identify a temperature gradient in the outflow from >40K in the central 100pc to <15K at 250pc sampling the cooling of the molecular gas in the outflow. We used three methods to derive alpha_CO in eight 100pc (0.5") apertures in the outflow by fitting the P(J+2)/R(J) ratios with non-LTE models. We obtain low median alpha_CO factors (0.40-0.61) x 3.2e-4/[CO/H2] Msun (K km/s/pc2)^-1 in the outflow regions. This implies that outflow rates and energetics might be overestimated if a ULIRG-like alpha_CO, which is 1.3-2 times larger, is assumed. The reduced alpha_CO can be explained if the outflowing molecular clouds are not virialized. We also report the first extragalactic detection of a broad (sigma=0.0091um) spectral feature at 4.645um associated with aliphatic deuterium on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (D_n-PAH)., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A.17 pages, 13 figures

We present hydrodynamic simulations of the interstellar medium (ISM) within the circumnuclear disk (CND) of a typical AGN-dominated galaxy influenced by mechanical feedback from an active galactic nucleus(AGN). The simulations are coupled with the CHIMES non-equilibrium chemistry network to treat the radiative-cooling and AGN-heating. A focus is placed on the central 100 pc scale where AGN outflows are coupled to the ISM and constrained by observational Seyfert-2 galaxies. AGN-feedback models are implemented with different wind-velocity and mass-loading factors. We post-process the simulation snapshots with a radiative-transfer code to obtain the molecular emission lines. We find that the inclusion of an AGN promotes the formation of CO in clumpy and dense regions surrounding supermassive-blackholes (SMBH). The CO(1-0) intensity maps ($<$6 Myr) in the CND seem to match well with observations of NGC 1068 with a best match for a model with 5000 $\rm km/s$ wind-velocity and a high mass-loading factor. We attempt to discern between competing explanations for the apparent counter-rotating gas disk in the NGC 1068 through an analysis of kinematic maps of the CO line emission. We suggest that mechanical AGN-feedback could explain the alignment-stability of position-angle across the different CND radii around the SMBH through momentum and energy loading of the wind. It is the wind-velocity that drives the disk out of alignment on a 100 pc scale for a long period of time. The position-velocity diagrams are in broad agreement with the predicted Keplerian rotation-curve in the model without-AGN, but the AGN models exhibit a larger degree of scatter, in better agreement with NGC 1068 observations., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures. We present new ALMA observations of the CO(3-2) transition and 854micron continuum at 0.06-0.3" resolution, together with new VLT/SINFONI observations of NGC7172. This is a luminous (bolometric luminosity of ~10^44 erg/s) Seyfert galaxy that belongs to the Galaxy Activity, Torus, and Outflow Survey (GATOS). The CO(3-2) observations reveal the presence of a highly inclined cold molecular gas ring with an approximate radius of 3-4"~540-720 pc, which is likely associated with an inner Lindblad resonance of a putative stellar bar. There are noncircular motions in the VLT/SINFONI [SiVI]1.96micron and H2 at 2.12micron, and ALMA CO(3-2) velocity fields. After subtracting the stellar velocity field, we detected [SiVI] blueshifted velocities of a few hundred km/s to the south of the AGN. They trace outflowing ionized gas outside the plane of the galaxy and out to projected distances of ~200 pc. The CO(3-2) position-velocity diagram along the kinematic minor axis displays noncircular motions with observed velocities of up to ~150 km/s. Assuming that these are taking place in the disk of the galaxy, the observed velocity signs imply that the molecular gas ring is not only rotating but also outflowing. We derived an integrated cold molecular gas mass outflow rate of ~40 Msun/yr for the ring. Using the 854micron map, we resolved a 32 pc radius torus with a gas mass of 8x10^5 Msun. These torus properties are similar to other Seyfert galaxies in the GATOS sample. We measured a decreased cold molecular gas concentration in the nuclear-torus region relative to the circumnuclear region when compared to other less luminous Seyfert galaxies. We conclude that the effects of AGN feedback in NGC7172, which are likely caused by the AGN wind and/or the moderate luminosity radio jet, are seen as a large-scale outflowing molecular gas ring and accompanying redistribution of molecular gas in the nuclear regions., Comment: Accepted for publication to A&A

We present a spatially-resolved study of the ionised gas in the central 2 kpc of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 2110 and investigate the role of its moderate luminosity radio jet (kinetic radio power of $P_\mathrm{jet} = 2.3 \times 10^{43}\mathrm{erg\ s^{-1}}$). We use new optical integral-field observations taken with the MEGARA spectrograph at GTC. We fit the emission lines with a maximum of two Gaussian components, except at the AGN position where we used three. Aided by existing stellar kinematics, we use the observed velocity and velocity dispersion of the emission lines to classify the different kinematic components. The disc component is characterised by lines with $\sigma \sim 60-200\ \mathrm{km\ s^{-1}}$. The outflow component has typical values of $\sigma \sim 700\ \mathrm{km\ s^{-1}}$ and is confined to the central 400 pc, which is coincident with linear part of the radio jet detected in NGC 2110. At the AGN position, the [O III]$\lambda$5007 line shows high velocity components reaching at least $1000\ \mathrm{km\ s^{-1}}$. This and the high velocity dispersions indicate the presence of outflowing gas outside the galaxy plane. Spatially-resolved diagnostic diagrams reveal mostly LI(N)ER-like excitation in the outflow and some regions in the disc, which could be due to the presence of shocks. However, there is also Seyfert-like excitation beyond the bending of the radio jet, probably tracing the edge of the ionisation cone that intercepts with the disc of the galaxy. NGC 2110 follows well the observational trends between the outflow properties and the jet radio power found for a few nearby Seyfert galaxies. All these pieces of information suggest that part of observed ionised outflow in NGC 2110 might be driven by the radio jet. However, the radio jet was bent at radial distances of 200 pc (in projection) from the AGN, and beyond there, most of the gas in the galaxy disc is rotating., Comment: 25 pages, 22 figures, 3 tables. The factor relating CO emission to molecular hydrogen column density, XCO, is still subject to uncertainty, in particular at low metallicity. Here, to quantify XCO at two different spatial resolutions, we exploit a dust-based method together with ALMA 12-m and ACA data and HI maps of three nearby metal-poor starbursts, NGC625, NGC1705, and NGC5253. Dust opacity at 250pc resolution is derived based on dust temperatures estimated by fitting two-temperature modified blackbodies to Herschel PACS data. By using the HI maps, we are then able to estimate dust-to-gas ratios in the atomic-gas dominated regions, and infer total gas column densities and H2 column densities as the difference with HI. Finally, from the ACA CO(1-0) maps, we derive XCO. We use a similar technique with 40 pc ALMA 12-m data for the three galaxies, but instead derive dust attenuation at 40 pc resolution from reddening maps based on VLT/MUSE data. At 250 pc resolution, XCO $\sim$ 10^22 - 10^23 cm^-2 / K.km/s, 5-1000 times the Milky Way value, with much larger values than would be expected from a simple metallicity dependence. Instead at 40 pc resolution, XCO again shows large variation, but is roughly consistent with a power-law metallicity dependence, given the Z $\sim$ 1/3 Zsun metal abundances of our targets. The large scatter in both estimations could imply additional parameter dependence, that we have investigated by comparing XCO with the observed velocity-integrated brightness temperatures, ICO, as predicted by recent simulations. Indeed, larger XCO is significantly correlated with smaller ICO, but with slightly different slopes and normalizations than predicted by theory. Such behavior can be attributed to the increasing fraction of CO-faint H2 gas with lower spatial resolution. HNCO and SiO are well known shock tracers and have been observed in nearby galaxies, including the nearby (D=3.5 Mpc) starburst galaxy NGC 253. The simultaneous detection of these two species in regions where the star formation rate is high may be used to study the shock history of the gas. We perform a multi-line molecular study using these two shock tracers (SiO and HNCO) with the aim of characterizing the gas properties. We also explore the possibility of reconstructing the shock history in NGC 253's Central Molecular Zone (CMZ). Six SiO transitions and eleven HNCO transitions were imaged at high resolution $1''.6$ (28 pc) with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) as part of the ALCHEMI Large Programme. Both non-LTE radiative transfer analysis and chemical modelling were performed in order to characterize the gas properties, and to investigate the chemical origin of the emission. The non-LTE radiative transfer analysis coupled with Bayesian inference shows clear evidence that the gas traced by SiO has different densities and temperatures than that traced by HNCO, with an indication that shocks are needed to produce both species. Chemical modelling further confirms such a scenario and suggests that fast and slow shocks are responsible for SiO and HNCO production, respectively, in most GMCs. We are also able to infer the physical characteristics of the shocks traced by SiO and HNCO for each GMC. Radiative transfer and chemical analysis of the SiO and HNCO in the CMZ of NGC 253 reveal a complex picture whereby most of the GMCs are subjected to shocks. We speculate on the possible shock scenarios responsible for the observed emission and provide potential history and timescales for each shock scenario. Higher spatial resolution observations of these two species are required in order to quantitatively differentiate between scenarios.

In order to investigate the impact of radio jets on the interstellar medium (ISM) of galaxies hosting active galactic nuclei (AGN), we present subarcsecond resolution Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) CO(2-1) and CO(3-2) observations of the Teacup galaxy. This is a nearby ($D_{\rm L}$=388 Mpc) radio-quiet type-2 quasar (QSO2) with a compact radio jet ($P_{\rm jet}\approx$10$^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$) that subtends a small angle from the molecular gas disc. Enhanced emission line widths perpendicular to the jet orientation have been reported for several nearby AGN for the ionised gas. For the molecular gas in the Teacup, not only do we find this enhancement in the velocity dispersion but also a higher brightness temperature ratio (T32/T21) perpendicular to the radio jet compared to the ratios found in the galaxy disc. Our results and the comparison with simulations suggest that the radio jet is compressing and accelerating the molecular gas, and driving a lateral outflow that shows enhanced velocity dispersion and higher gas excitation. These results provide further evidence that the coupling between the jet and the ISM is relevant to AGN feedback even in the case of radio-quiet galaxies., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures. Molecular line ratios, such as HCN(1-0)/HCO$^+$(1-0) and HCN(4-3)/CS(7-6), are routinely used to identify active galactic nuclei (AGN) activity in galaxies. Such ratios are, however, hard to interpret as they are highly dependent on the physics and energetics of the gas, and hence can seldom be used as a unique, unambiguous diagnostic. We used the composite galaxy NGC 1068 as a `laboratory' to investigate whether molecular line ratios between HCN, HCO$^+$, and CS are useful tracers of AGN-dominated gas and determine the origin of the differences in such ratios across different types of gas. Such a determination will enable a more rigorous use of such ratios. First, we empirically examined the aforementioned ratios at different angular resolutions to quantify correlations. We then used local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) and non-LTE analyses coupled with Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling in order to determine the origin of the underlying differences in ratios. We propose that at high spatial resolution (< 50 pc) the HCN(4-3)/CS(2-1) is a reliable tracer of AGN activity. We also find that the variations in ratios are not a consequence of different densities or temperature but of different fractional abundances, yielding to the important result that it is essential to consider the chemical processes at play when drawing conclusions from radiative transfer calculations. From analyses at varying spatial scales, we find that previously proposed molecular line ratios, as well as a new one, have varying levels of consistency. We study molecular outflows in a sample of 25 nearby (z< 0.17, d<750 Mpc) ULIRG systems (38 individual nuclei) as part of the "Physics of ULIRGs with MUSE and ALMA" (PUMA) survey, using ~400 pc (0.1-1.0" beam FWHM) resolution ALMA CO(2-1) observations. We used a spectro-astrometry analysis to identify high-velocity (> 300 km/s) molecular gas disconnected from the galaxy rotation, which we attribute to outflows. In 77% of the 26 nuclei with $\log L_{IR}/L_{\odot}>11.8$, we identifid molecular outflows with an average $v_{out}= 490$ km/s, outflow masses $1-35 \times 10^7$ $M_{\odot}$, mass outflow rates $\dot{M}_{out}=6-300$ $M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, mass-loading factors $\eta = \dot{M}_{out}/SFR = 0.1-1$, and an average outflow mass escape fraction of 45%. The majority of these outflows (18/20) are spatially resolved with radii of 0.2-0.9 kpc and have short dynamical times ($t_{dyn}=R_{out}/v_{out}$) in the range 0.5-2.8 Myr. The outflow detection rate is higher in nuclei dominated by starbursts (SBs, 14/15=93%) than in active galactic nuclei (AGN, 6/11=55%). Outflows perpendicular to the kinematic major axis are mainly found in interacting SBs. We also find that our sample does not follow the $\dot{M}_{out}$ versus AGN luminosity relation reported in previous works. In our analysis, we include a sample of nearby main-sequence galaxies (SFR = 0.3-17 $M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$) with detected molecular outflows from the PHANGS-ALMA survey to increase the $L_{IR}$ dynamic range. Using these two samples, we find a correlation between the outflow velocity and the SFR, as traced by $L_{IR}$ ($v_{out} \propto SFR^{0.25\pm0.01})$, which is consistent with what was found for the atomic ionised and neutral phases. Using this correlation, and the relation between $M_{out}/R_{out}$ and $v_{out}$, we conclude that these outflows are likely momentum-driven., Comment: 27 pages, 23 figures; Appendix: 49 pages, 41 figures. Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are carbon-based molecules that are ubiquitous in a variety of astrophysical objects and environments. In this work, we use JWST/MIRI MRS spectroscopy of three Seyferts to compare their nuclear PAH emission with that of star-forming regions. This study represents the first of its kind using sub-arcsecond angular resolution data of local luminous Seyferts (Lbol>10^44.46 erg/s) on a wide wavelength coverage (4.9-28.1 micron). We present an analysis of their nuclear PAH properties by comparing the observed ratios with PAH diagnostic model grids, derived from theoretical spectra. Our results show that a suite of PAH features is present in the innermost parts (~0.45 arcsec at 12 micron; in the inner ~142-245 pc) of luminous Seyfert galaxies. We find that the nuclear regions of AGN lie at different positions of the PAH diagnostic diagrams, whereas the SF regions are concentrated around the average values of SF galaxies. In particular, we find that the nuclear PAH emission mainly originates in neutral PAHs. In contrast, PAH emission originating in the SF regions favours ionised PAH grains. The observed PAH ratios in the nuclear region of AGN-dominated galaxy NGC 6552 indicate the presence of larger-sized PAH molecules compared with those of the SF regions. Therefore, our results provide evidence that the AGN have a significant impact on the ionization state (and probably the size) of the PAH grains on scales of ~142-245 pc., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures. We present JWST/MIRI MRS spectroscopy of NGC7319, the largest galaxy in the Stephan's Quintet, observed as part of the Early Release Observations (ERO). NGC7319 hosts a type 2 active galactic nucleus (AGN) and a low-power radio jet (L_1.4GHz=3.3x10^22 W Hz^-1) with two asymmetric radio hotspots at 430 pc (N2) and 1.5 kpc (S2) projected distances from the unresolved radio core. The MRS data suggest that the molecular material in the disk of the galaxy decelerates the jet and causes this length asymmetry. We find enhanced emission from warm and hot H_2 (T_w=330+-40 K, T_h=900+-60 K) and ionized gas at the intersection between the jet axis and dust lanes in the disk. This emission is coincident with the radio hotspot N2, the hotspot closer to the core, suggesting that the jet-interstellar medium (ISM) interaction decelerates the jet. Conversely, the mid-infrared emission at the more distant hotspot is fainter, more highly ionized, and with lower H_2 excitation, suggesting a more diffuse atomic environment where the jet can progress to farther distances. At the N2 radio hotspot, the ionized gas mass (M_ion=(2.4-12)x10^5 Msun) is comparable to that of the warm H_2, but the former is more turbulent (sigma_ion~300 vs. sigma_H2~150 km/s), so the mechanical energy of the ionized gas is ~1.3-10 times higher. From these estimates, we find that only <1% of the jet energy remains as mechanical energy in these two ISM phases at N2. We also find extended (r>0.3-1.5 kpc) high-ionization emission ([MgV], [NeVI], and [NeV]) close to the radio hotspots. This initial analysis of NGC7319 shows the potential of MIRI/MRS to investigate the AGN feedback mechanisms due to radio jets and their radiation field in the, often heavily dust-enshrouded, central regions of galaxies. The accretion rates needed to fuel the central black hole in a galaxy can be achieved via viscous torques in thick disks and rings, which can be resolved by millimetre interferometry within the inner ~20pc of the active galaxy NGC1068 at comparable scales and sensitivity to single dish observations of the Circumnuclear Disk (CND) in the Galactic Center. To interpret observations of these regions and determine the physical properties of their gas distribution, we present a modelling effort that includes (i) a simple dynamical simulations involving partially inelastic collisions between disk gas clouds, (ii) an analytical model of a turbulent clumpy gas disk calibrated by the dynamical model and observations, (iii) local turbulent and cosmic ray gas heating and cooling via H2O, H2, and CO emission, and (iv) determination of the molecular abundances. We also consider photodissociation regions (PDR) where gas is directly illuminated by the central engine. We compare the resulting model datacubes of the CO, HCN, HCO+, and CS brightness temperatures to available observations. In both cases the kinematics can be explained by one or two clouds colliding with a pre-existing ring, in a prograde sense for the CND and retrograde for NGC1068. And, with only dense disk clouds, the line fluxes can be reproduced to within a factor of about two. To avoid self-absorption of the intercloud medium, turbulent heating at the largest scales, comparable to the disk height, has to be decreased by a factor of 50-200. Our models indicate that turbulent mechanical energy input is the dominant gas heating mechanism within the thick gas disks. In N1068, while the bulk of the AGN X-ray radiation is absorbed in a layer of Compton-thick gas inside the dust sublimation radius, the optical/UV radiation may enhance the molecular line emission from photodissociation regions by ~50% at the inner edge of the gas ring., Comment: 36 pages, 32 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present new CO(2-1) observations of a representative sample of 24 local (z$<$0.02) luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) obtained at high spatial resolution ($<$100 pc) from ALMA. We derive the effective radii of the CO(2-1) and the 1.3 mm continuum emissions using the curve-of-growth method. LIRGs show an extremely compact cold molecular gas distribution (median R$_{CO}$ $\sim$0.7 kpc), which is a factor 2 smaller than the ionized gas, and 3.5 times smaller than the stellar size. The molecular size of LIRGs is similar to that of early-type galaxies (R$_{CO}\sim$1 kpc) and about a factor of 6 more compact than local Spirals of similar stellar mass. Only the CO emission in low-z ULIRGs is more compact than these local LIRGs by a factor of 2. Compared to high-z (1$<$z$<$6) systems, the stellar sizes and masses of local LIRGs are similar to those of high-z MS star-forming galaxies (SFG) and about a factor of 2-3 lower than sub-mm galaxies (SMG). The molecular sizes of high-z MS SFGs and SMGs are larger than those derived for LIRGs by a factor of $\sim$3 and $\sim$8, respectively. These results indicate that while low-z LIRGs and high-z MS-SFGs have similar stellar masses and sizes, the regions of current star formation (traced by the ionized gas) and of potential star-formation (traced by the molecular gas) are substantially smaller in LIRGs, and constrained to the central kpc region. High-z galaxies represent a wider population but their star-forming regions are more extended, even covering the overall size of the host galaxy. High-z galaxies have larger fractions of gas than low-z LIRGs, and therefore the formation of stars could be induced by interactions and mergers in extended disks or filaments with large enough molecular gas surface density involving physical mechanisms similar to those identified in the central kpc of LIRGs., Comment: 36 pages, 20 figures, 8 tables. We present a CO(3-2) study of four systems composed of six (ultra) luminous infrared galaxies (U/LIRGs), located at 0.28 < z < 0.44, that straddle the transition region between regular star forming galaxies and starbursts. These galaxies benefit from previous multi-wavelength analysis allowing in depth exploration of an understudied population of U/LIRGs at a time when the universe is experiencing a rapid decline in star formation rate density. We detect CO(3-2) emission in four targets and these galaxies fall between the loci of regular star forming galaxies and starbursts on the Kennicutt-Schmidtt relation. Compared to low luminosity LIRGs and high luminosity ULIRGs at similar redshifts, we find they all have similar molecular gas budgets with the difference in their star formation rates (SFR) driven by the star formation efficiency (SFE). This suggests that at these redshifts large molecular gas reservoirs must coincide with an increased SFE to transition a galaxy into the starburst regime. We studied the structure and kinematics and found our four detections are either interacting or have disturbed morphology which may be driving the SFE. One of the CO(3-2) non-detections has a strong continuum detection, and has been previously observed in H$\alpha$, suggesting an unusual interstellar medium for a ULIRG. We conclude that our sample of transitioning U/LIRGs fill the gap between regular star forming galaxies and starbursts, suggest a continuous change in SFE between these two populations and the increased SFE may be driven by morphology and differing stages of interaction., Comment: 19 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

In the nearby (D=14 Mpc) AGN-starburst composite galaxy NGC 1068, it has been found that the molecular gas in the Circum-nuclear Disk (CND) is outflowing, which is a manifestation of ongoing AGN feedback. The outflowing gas has a large spread of velocities, which likely drive different shock chemistry signatures at different locations in the CND. We perform a multi-line molecular study using two shock tracers, SiO and HNCO, with the aim to determine the gas properties traced by these two species, and explore the possibility of reconstructing the shock history in the CND. Five SiO transitions and three HNCO transitions were imaged at high resolution $0''.5-0''.8$ with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). We performed both LTE and non-LTE radiative transfer analysis coupled with Bayesian inference process in order to characterize the gas properties, such as molecular gas density and gas temperature. We found clear evidence of chemical differentiation between SiO and HNCO, with the SiO/HNCO ratio ranging from greater than one on the east of CND to lower than one on the west side. The non-LTE radiative transfer analysis coupled with Bayesian inference confirms that the gas traced by SiO has different densities - and possibly temperatures - than that traced by HNCO. We find that SiO traces gas affected by fast shocks while the gas traced by HNCO is either just affected by slow shocks or not shocked at all. A distinct differentiation between SiO and HNCO has been revealed in our observations and the further analysis of the gas properties traced by both species, which confirms the results from previous chemical modelings., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We analyse the influence of the dynamical environment on the star formation (SF) relations of the dense molecular gas in the starburst (SB) ring of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068. We used ALMA to image the emission of the 1-0 transitions of HCN and HCO+ with a resolution of 56 pc. We also used ancillary data of CO(1-0) at a resolution of ~100 pc, and CO(3-2) and its underlying continuum emission at ~40 pc. These observations allow us to probe a range of molecular gas densities (n(H2)~10$^{3-5}cm^{-3}$). The SF rate (SFR) is derived from Pa$\alpha$ line emission imaged by HST/NICMOS. We analysed how SF relations change depending on the choice of aperture sizes and molecular gas tracer. The scatter in the Kennicutt-Schmidt relation is about a factor of two to three lower for the HCN and HCO+ lines compared to CO(1-0) for a common aperture. Correlations lose statistical significance below a critical spatial scale $\approx$300-400 pc. The SF efficiency of the dense molecular gas (SFEdense) shows a scattered distribution as a function of the HCN luminosity (L'(HCN)) around a mean value of $\simeq0.01$Myr$^{-1}$. An alternative prescription for SF relations, linking the SFEdense and the boundedness of the gas measured by the parameter b$\equiv\Sigma$dense/$\sigma^2$, where $\Sigma$dense is the dense molecular gas surface density and $\sigma$ the velocity dispersion, resolves the degeneracy associated with the SFEdense-L'(HCN) plot. We identify two branches in the SFEdense-b plot that correspond to two dynamical environments in the SB ring, which are defined by their proximity to the bar-ring interface region. This region corresponds to the crossing of two density wave resonances, where an increased rate of cloud-cloud collisions would favour an enhanced compression of molecular gas. We present CO(2-1) and adjacent continuum observations of 7 nearby radio-quiet type-2 quasars (QSO2s) obtained with ALMA at ~0.2" resolution (370 pc at z~0.1). The CO morphologies are diverse, including disks and interacting systems. Two of the QSO2s are red early-type galaxies with no CO(2-1) detected. In the interacting galaxies, the central kpc contains 18-25% of the total cold molecular gas, whereas in the spirals it is only 5-12%. J1010+0612 and J1430+1339 show double-peaked CO morphologies which do not have optical counterparts. Based on our analysis of the ionized and molecular kinematics and mm continuum emission, these CO morphologies are most likely produced by AGN feedback in the form of outflows, jets, and/or shocks. The CO kinematics of the QSO2s are dominated by rotation but also reveal noncircular motions. According to our analysis of the kinematics, these noncircular motions correspond to molecular outflows mostly coplanar with the CO discs in four of the QSO2s, and either to a coplanar inflow or vertical outflow in the case of J1010+0612. These outflows represent 0.2-0.7% of the QSO2s' total molecular gas mass and have maximum velocities of 200-350 km/s, radii from 0.4 to 1.3 kpc, and outflow rates of 8-16 Msun/yr. These properties are intermediate between those of the mild molecular outflows measured for Seyferts, and the fast and energetic outflows of ULIRGs. This suggests that it is not only AGN luminosity that drives massive molecular outflows. Other factors such as jet power, coupling between winds, jets, and/or ionized outflows and the CO discs, and amount or geometry of dense gas in the nuclear regions might be also relevant. Thus, although we do not find evidence for a significant impact of quasar feedback on the total molecular gas reservoirs and SFRs, it appears to be modifying the distribution of cold molecular gas in the central kpc of the galaxies., Comment: 29 pages including 18 figures, 7 tables and appendices. We analyse the star formation (SF) relations in a sample of 16 nearby luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) with more than 2800 regions defined on scales of 90 to 500 pc. We used ALMA to map the distribution of the cold molecular gas traced by the J = 2-1 line of CO and archival Pa\alpha HST/NICMOS imaging to trace the recent SF. In four objects, we find two different branches in the Kennicutt-Schmidt relation at 90 pc scales, suggesting the existence of a duality in this relation. The two branches correspond to two different dynamical environments within each galaxy. One branch, which corresponds to the central region of these galaxies 90% of the regions are located at radii < 0.85 kpc), shows higher gas and star formation rate surface densities with higher velocity dispersion. The other branch, which shows lower molecular gas and SF rate surface densities, corresponds to the more external disk regions (r $\sim$ 1 kpc). Despite the scatter, the SF efficiency of the galaxies with a dual behaviour increases with increasing boundedness as measured by the b parameter (b $\equiv$ $\Sigma_{H_{2}}$/$\sigma^{2}$ $\propto$ $\alpha_{vir}^{-1}$). At larger spatial scales (250 and 500 pc), the duality disappears. We used the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), covering a nearly contiguous 289 GHz frequency range between 84.2 and 373.2 GHz, to image the continuum and spectral line emission at 1.6\arcsec ($\sim 28$ pc) resolution down to a sensitivity of $30-50$ mK. This article describes the ALMA Comprehensive High-resolution Extragalactic Molecular Inventory (ALCHEMI) Large Program. We focus on the analysis of the spectra extracted from the $15''$ ($\sim255$ pc) resolution ALMA Compact Array data. We model the molecular emission assuming local thermodynamic equilibrium with 78 species detected. Additionally, multiple hydrogen and helium recombination lines are identified. Spectral lines contribute 5 to 36\% of the total emission in frequency bins of 50 GHz. We report the first extragalactic detections of C$_2$H$_5$OH, HOCN, HC$_3$HO, and several rare isotopologues. Isotopic ratios of carbon, oxygen, sulfur, nitrogen and silicon were measure with multiple species. Infrared pumped vibrationaly excited HCN, HNC, and HC$_3$N emission, originating in massive star formation locations, is clearly detected at low resolution, while we do not detect it for HCO$^+$. We suggest high temperature conditions in these regions driving a seemingly "carbon-rich" chemistry which may also explain the observed high abundance of organic species close to those in Galactic hot cores. The $L_{vib}/L_{IR}$ ratio is used as a proxy to estimate a $3\%$ contribution from proto super star cluster to the global infrared emission. Measured isotopic ratios with high dipole moment species agree with those within the central kiloparsec of the Galaxy, while those derived from $\rm^{13}C^{18}O$ are a factor of 5 larger, confirming the existence of multiple ISM components within NGC 253 with different degrees of nucleosynthesis enrichment. We mapped the kinetic temperature structure of two massive star-forming regions, N113 and N159W, in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We have used $\sim$1\hbox{$\,.\!\!^{\prime\prime}$}6\,($\sim$0.4\,pc) resolution measurements of the para-H$_2$CO\,$J_{\rm K_ aK_c}$\,=\,3$_{03}$--2$_{02}$, 3$_{22}$--2$_{21}$, and 3$_{21}$--2$_{20}$ transitions near 218.5\,GHz to constrain RADEX non-LTE models of the physical conditions. The gas kinetic temperatures derived from the para-H$_2$CO line ratios 3$_{22}$--2$_{21}$/3$_{03}$--2$_{02}$ and 3$_{21}$--2$_{20}$/3$_{03}$--2$_{02}$ range from 28 to 105\,K in N113 and 29 to 68\,K in N159W. Distributions of the dense gas traced by para-H$_2$CO agree with those of the 1.3\,mm dust and \emph{Spitzer}\,8.0\,$\mu$m emission, but do not significantly correlate with the H$\alpha$ emission. The high kinetic temperatures ($T_{\rm kin}$\,$\gtrsim$\,50\,K) of the dense gas traced by para-H$_2$CO appear to be correlated with the embedded infrared sources inside the clouds and/or YSOs in the N113 and N159W regions. The lower temperatures ($T_{\rm kin}$\,$<$\,50\,K) are measured at the outskirts of the H$_2$CO-bearing distributions of both N113 and N159W. It seems that the kinetic temperatures of the dense gas traced by para-H$_2$CO are weakly affected by the external sources of the H$\alpha$ emission. The non-thermal velocity dispersions of para-H$_2$CO are well correlated with the gas kinetic temperatures in the N113 region, implying that the higher kinetic temperature traced by para-H$_2$CO is related to turbulence on a $\sim$0.4\,pc scale. The dense gas heating appears to be dominated by internal star formation activity, radiation, and/or turbulence. It seems that the mechanism heating the dense gas of the star-forming regions in the LMC is consistent with that in Galactic massive star-forming regions located in the Galactic plane., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Observations of chemical species can provide an insight into the physical conditions of the emitting gas but it is important to understand how their abundances and excitation vary within different heating environments. C$_2$H is a molecule typically found in PDR regions of our own Galaxy but there is evidence to suggest it also traces other regions undergoing energetic processing in extragalactic environments. As part of the ALCHEMI ALMA large program, the emission of C$_2$H in the central molecular zone of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253 was mapped at 1.6 " (28 pc) resolution and characterized to understand its chemical origins. Spectral modelling of the N=1-0 through N=4-3 rotational transitions of C$_2$H was used to derive the C$_2$H column densities towards the dense clouds in NGC 253. Chemical modelling, including PDR, dense cloud, and shock models were then used to investigate the chemical processes and physical conditions that are producing the molecular emission. We find high C$_2$H column densities of $\sim 10^{15} cm^{-3}$ detected towards the dense regions of NGC 253. We further find that these column densities cannot be reproduced by assuming that the emission arises from the PDR regions at the edge of the clouds. Instead, we find that the C$_2$H abundance remains high even in the high visual extinction interior of these clouds and that this is most likely caused by a high cosmic-ray ionization rate., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We compare mid-IR and ALMA far-IR images of 12 nearby Seyferts selected from GATOS. The mid-IR unresolved emission contributes more than 60% of the nuclear emission in most galaxies. By contrast, the ALMA 870micron continuum emission is mostly resolved and typically along the torus equatorial direction (Paper I, Garcia-Burillo et al. 2021). The Eddington ratios and nuclear hydrogen column densities NH of half the sample are favorable to launching polar and/or equatorial dusty winds, according to simulations. Six show mid-IR extended emission in the polar direction as traced by the NLR and perpendicular to the ALMA emission. In a few, the nuclear NH might be too high to uplift large quantities of dusty material along the polar direction. Five galaxies have low NH and/or Eddington ratios and thus polar dusty winds are not likely. We generate new CAT3D-WIND disk-wind model images. At low wind-to-disk cloud ratios the far-IR model images have disk- and ring-like morphologies. The X-shape associated with dusty winds is seen better in the far-IR at intermediate-high inclinations for the extended-wind configurations. In most models, the mid-IR emission comes from the inner part of the disk/cone. Extended bi-conical and one-sided polar mid-IR emission is seen in extended-wind configurations and high wind-to-disk cloud ratios. When convolved to our resolution, the model images reproduce qualitative aspects of the observed morphologies. Low-intermediate wind-to-disk ratios are required to account for the large fractions of unresolved mid-IR emission. This work and Paper I provide observational support for the torus+wind scenario. The wind component is more relevant at high Eddington ratios and/or AGN luminosities, and polar dust emission is predicted at NH of up to $10^{24}$cm$^{-2}$. We present the first results of the Galaxy Activity, Torus and Outflow Survey (GATOS), a project aimed at understanding the properties of the dusty molecular tori and their connection to the host galaxy in nearby Seyfert galaxies. Our project expands the range of AGN luminosities and Eddington ratios covered by previous surveys of Seyferts conducted by ALMA and allows us to study the gas feeding and feedback cycle in a combined sample of 19 Seyferts. We used ALMA to obtain new images of the emission of molecular gas and dust using the CO(3-2) and HCO+(4-3) lines as well as their underlying continuum emission at 870 microns with high spatial resolutions (0.1'' ~ 7 - 13 pc) in the CND of 10 nearby (D < 28 Mpc) Seyfert galaxies. Our new ALMA observations detect 870 micron continuum and CO line emission from spatially resolved disks located around the AGN in all the sources. The bulk of the continuum flux can be accounted for by thermal emission from dust in the majority of the targets. For most of the sources the disks show a preponderant orientation perpendicular to the AGN wind axes, as expected for dusty molecular tori. The median diameters and molecular gas masses of the tori are ~ 42 pc, and ~ 6 x 10**5 Msun, respectively. We find a positive correlation between the line-of-sight gas column densities responsible for the absorption of X-rays and the molecular gas column densities derived from CO towards the AGN in our sources. The radial distributions of molecular gas in the CND of our combined sample show signs of nuclear-scale molecular gas deficits. We also detect molecular outflows in the sources that show the most extreme nuclear-scale gas deficits in our sample. We analyze high-resolution (400pc) 220GHz continuum and CO(2-1) ALMA observations of a representative sample of 23 local (z<0.165) ULIRG systems (34 individual nuclei) as part of the "Physics of ULIRGs with MUSE and ALMA" (PUMA) project. The deconvolved half-light radii of the 220GHz continuum sources are between <60-350 pc (median 90pc). We associate these regions with the regions emitting the bulk of the infrared luminosity. The good agreement, within a factor of 2, between the 220GHz fluxes and the extrapolation of the infrared gray-body, and the small synchrotron and free-free contributions support this assumption. The cold molecular gas emission sizes, r_CO, are 60-700 pc and are similar in advanced mergers and early interacting systems. On average, r_CO are 2.5 times larger than the continuum. We derive L_IR and cold molecular gas surface densities: log Sigma(L_IR)=11.5-14.3 Lsun/kpc^2 and log Sigma(H2)=2.9-4.2 Msun/pc^2. Assuming that the L_IR is produced by star-formation, this corresponds to median Sigma(SFR)=2500 Msun/yr/kpc^2 which would imply extremely short depletion times, <1-15 Myr, and unphysical SF efficiencies >1 for 70% of the sample. Therefore, this favors the presence of obscured AGN that could dominate the L_IR. We also classify the ULIRG nuclei in two groups: (a) compact nuclei (r<130 pc) with high mid-IR excess emission found in optically classified AGN; and (b) nuclei following a relation with decreasing mid-IR excess for decreasing r. 60% of the interacting nuclei lie in the low end (<130 pc) of this relation, while only 30% of the advanced mergers do so, suggesting that in the early interaction phases the activity occurs in more compact and obscured regions. About two thirds of the nuclei are above the Eddington limit which is consistent with the detection of massive outflows in local ULIRGs and the potential role of radiation pressure in the launching process., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Some luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs and ULIRGs) host extremely compact and dusty nuclei. The intense infrared radiation arising from warm dust in these sources is prone to excite vibrational levels of molecules such as HCN. This results in emission from the rotational transitions of vibrationally excited HCN (HCN-vib), with the brightest emission found in compact obscured nuclei (CONs). We aim to establish how common CONs are in the local Universe, and whether their prevalence depends on the luminosity or other properties of the host galaxy. We have conducted an Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) survey of the rotational J=3-2 transition of HCN-vib in a sample of 46 far-infrared luminous galaxies. Compact obscured nuclei are identified in 38 percent of ULIRGs, 21 percent of LIRGs, and 0 percent of lower luminosity galaxies. We find no dependence on the inclination of the host galaxy, but strong evidence of lower IRAS 25 to 60 {\mu}m flux density ratios (f25/f60) in CONs compared to the rest of the sample. Furthermore, we find that CONs have stronger silicate features (s9.7{\mu}m) but similar PAH equivalent widths (EQW6.2{\mu}m) compared to other galaxies. In the local Universe, CONs are primarily found in (U)LIRGs. High resolution continuum observations of the individual nuclei are required to determine if the CON phenomenon is related to the inclinations of the nuclear disks. The lower f25/f60 ratios in CONs as well as the results for the mid-infrared diagnostics investigated are consistent with large dust columns shifting the nuclear radiation to longer wavelengths, making the mid- and far-infrared "photospheres" significantly cooler than the interior regions. Gas phase Elemental abundances in Molecular CloudS (GEMS) is an IRAM 30m Large Program designed to estimate the S, C, N, and O depletions and gas ionization degree, X(e-), in a set of star-forming filaments of Taurus, Perseus and Orion. Our immediate goal is to build up a complete database of molecular abundances that can serve as an observational basis for estimating X(e-) and the C, O, N, and S depletions through chemical modeling. We observed and derived the abundances of 14 species (13CO, C18O, HCO+, H13CO+, HC18O+, HCN, H13CN, HNC, HCS+, CS, SO, 34SO, H2S, and OCS) in 244 positions, covering the AV 3 to 100 mag, n(H2) a few 10$^{3}$ to 10$^6$ cm$^{-3}$, and Tk 10 to 30 K ranges in these clouds, avoiding protostars, HII regions, and outflows. A statistical analysis is carried out to identify general trends between different species and with physical parameters. Relations between molecules reveal strong linear correlations which define three different families: (1) 13CO and C18O; (2) H13CO+, HC18O+, H13CN, and HNC; and (3) the S-bearing molecules. The abundances of the CO isotopologs increase with the gas kinetic temperature until TK 15 K. For higher temperatures, the abundance remains constant with a scatter of a factor of 3. The abundances of H13CO+, HC18O+, H13CN, and HNC are well correlated with each other, and all of them decrease with molecular hydrogen density, following the law n(H2)$^{-0.8\pm0.2}$. The abundances of S-bearing species also decrease with n(H2) at a rate of (S-bearing/H)gas n(H2)$^{-0.6\pm0.1}$. The abundances of molecules belonging to groups 2 and 3 do not present any clear trend with gas temperature. At scales of molecular clouds, the C18O abundance is the quantity that better correlates with the cloud mass. We discuss the utility of the 13CO/C18O, HCO+/H13CO+, and H13CO+/H13CN abundance ratios as chemical diagnostics of star formation in external galaxies., Comment: 28 pages, 22 figures. CS is among the most abundant gas-phase S-bearing molecules in cold dark molecular clouds. It is easily observable with several transitions in the millimeter wavelength range, and has been widely used as a tracer of the gas density in the interstellar medium in our Galaxy and external galaxies. Chemical models fail to account for the observed CS abundances when assuming the cosmic value for the elemental abundance of sulfur. The CS+O -> CO + S reaction has been proposed as a relevant CS destruction mechanism at low temperatures, and could explain the discrepancy between models and observations. Its reaction rate has been experimentally measured at temperatures of 150-400 K, but the extrapolation to lower temperatures is doubtful. Here we calculate the CS+O reaction rate at temperatures <150 K which are prevailing in the interstellar medium. We performed ab initio calculations to obtain the three lowest PES of the CS+O system. These PESs are used to study the reaction dynamics, using several methods to eventually calculate the CS+O thermal reaction rates. We compare the results of our theoretical calculations for 150-400 K with those obtained in the laboratory. Our detailed theoretical study on the CS+O reaction, which is in agreement with the experimental data obtained at 150-400 K, demonstrates the reliability of our approach. After a careful analysis at lower temperatures, we find that the rate constant at 10 K is negligible, which is consistent with the extrapolation of experimental data using the Arrhenius expression. We use the updated chemical network to model the sulfur chemistry in TMC1 based on molecular abundances determined from GEMS project observations. In our model, we take into account the expected decrease of the cosmic ray ionization rate along the cloud. We report on Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) observations of CO(3-2) emission in the Seyfert2/starburst galaxy NGC1808, at a spatial resolution of 4pc. Our aim is to investigate the morphology and dynamics of the gas inside the central 0.5kpc and to probe the nuclear feeding and feedback phenomena. We discovered a nuclear spiral of radius 1"=45pc. Within it, we found a decoupled circumnuclear disk or molecular torus of a radius of 0.13"=6pc. The HCN(4-3) and HCO$\rm^+$(4-3) and CS(7-6) dense gas line tracers were simultaneously mapped and detected in the nuclear spiral and they present the same misalignment in the molecular torus. At the nucleus, the HCN/HCO$^+$ and HCN/CS ratios indicate the presence of an active galactic nucleus (AGN). The molecular gas shows regular rotation, within a radius of 400pc, except for the misaligned disk inside the nuclear spiral arms. The computations of the torques exerted on the gas by the barred stellar potential reveal that the gas within a radius of 100pc is feeding the nucleus on a timescale of five rotations or on an average timescale of ~60Myr. Some non-circular motions are observed towards the center, corresponding to the nuclear spiral arms. We cannot rule out that small extra kinematic perturbations could be interpreted as a weak outflow attributed to AGN feedback. The narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy IRAS17020+4544 is one of the few sources where both an X-ray ultra-fast outflow and a molecular outflow were observed to be consistent with energy conservation. However, IRAS17020+4544 is less massive and has a much more modest active galactic nucleus (AGN) luminosity than the other examples. Using recent CO(1-0) observations with the NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA), we characterised the molecular gas content of the host galaxy for the first time. We found that the molecular gas is distributed into an apparent central disc of 1.1x10^9 Msun, and a northern extension located up to 8 kpc from the centre with a molecular gas mass M_H2~10^8 Msun. The molecular gas mass and the CO dynamics in the northern extension reveal that IRAS 17020+4544 is not a standard spiral galaxy, instead it is interacting with a dwarf object corresponding to the northern extension. This interaction possibly triggers the high accretion rate onto the super massive black hole. Within the main galaxy, which hosts the AGN, a simple analytical model predicts that the molecular gas may lie in a ring, with less molecular gas in the nuclear region. Such distribution may be the result of the AGN activity which removes or photodissociates the molecular gas in the nuclear region (AGN feedback). Finally, we have detected a molecular outflow of mass M_H2=(0.7-1.2)x10^7 Msun in projection at the location of the northern galaxy, with a similar velocity to that of the massive outflow reported in previous millimeter data obtained by the Large Millimeter Telescope., Comment: Published in MNRAS, Volume 501, Issue 1, Pages 219-228

Tidal dwarf galaxies (TDGs) are gravitationally bound condensations of gas and stars formed during galaxy interactions. Here we present multi-configuration ALMA observations of J1023+1952, a TDG in the interacting system Arp 94, where we resolve CO(2-1) emission down to giant molecular clouds (GMCs) at 0.64" ~ 45pc resolution. We find a remarkably high fraction of extended molecular emission (~80-90%), which is filtered out by the interferometer and likely traces diffuse gas. We detect 111 GMCs that give a similar mass spectrum as those in the Milky Way and other nearby galaxies (a truncated power law with slope of -1.76+/-0.13). We also study Larson's laws over the available dynamic range of GMC properties (~2 dex in mass and ~1 dex in size): GMCs follow the size-mass relation of the Milky Way, but their velocity dispersion is higher such that the size-linewidth and virial relations appear super-linear, deviating from the canonical values. The global molecular-to-atomic gas ratio is very high (~1) while the CO(2-1)/CO(1-0) ratio is quite low (~0.5), and both quantities vary from north to south. Star formation is predominantly taking place in the south of the TDG, where we observe projected offsets between GMCs and young stellar clusters ranging from ~50pc to ~200pc; the largest offsets correspond to the oldest knots, as seen in other galaxies. In the quiescent north, we find more molecular clouds and a higher molecular-to-atomic gas ratio (~1.5); atomic and diffuse molecular gas also have a higher velocity dispersion there. Overall, the organisation of the molecular ISM in this TDG is quite different from other types of galaxies on large scales, but the properties of GMCs seem fairly similar, pointing to near universality of the star-formation process on small scales., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We study the multi-phase feedback processes in the central ~3 kpc of the barred Sy 2 galaxy NGC 5643. We use observations of the cold molecular gas (ALMA CO(2-1)) and ionized gas (MUSE IFU). We study different regions along the outflow zone which extends out to ~2.3 kpc in the same direction (east-west) as the radio jet, as well as nuclear/circumnuclear regions in the host galaxy disk. The deprojected outflowing velocities of the cold molecular gas (median Vcentral~189 km s^-1) are generally lower than those of the outflowing ionized gas, which reach deprojected velocities of up to 750 km s^-1 close to the AGN, and their spatial profiles follow those of the ionized phase. This suggests that the outflowing molecular gas in the galaxy disk is being entrained by the AGN wind. We derive molecular and ionized outflow masses of ~5.2x10^7 Msun and 8.5x10^4 Msun and molecular and ionized outflow mass rates of ~51 Msun yr^-1 and 0.14 Msun yr^-1. Therefore, the molecular phase dominates the outflow mass and outflow mass rate, while the outflow kinetic power and momentum are similar in both phases. However, the wind momentum load for the molecular and ionized outflow phases are ~27-5 and <1, which suggests that the molecular phase is not momentum conserving while the ionized one most certainly is. The molecular gas content (~1.5x10^7 Msun) of the eastern spiral arm is approximately 50-70% of the content of the western one. We interpret this as destruction/clearing of the molecular gas produced by the AGN wind impacting in the host galaxy. The increase of the molecular phase momentum implies that part of the kinetic energy from the AGN wind is transmitted to the molecular outflow. This suggest that in Sy-like AGN such as NGC 5643, the radiative/quasar and the kinetic/radio AGN feedback modes coexist and may shape the host galaxies even at kpc-scales via both positive and (mild) negative feedback., Comment: 26 pages, 21 figures, 5 tables. We used high-spatial resolution (70 pc; 0.3") CO multi-transition (1-0, 2-1, 4-3, and 6-5) ALMA data to study the physical conditions and kinematics of the cold molecular outflow in the local LIRG ESO320-G030 (d=48 Mpc, log LIR/Lsun=11.3). ESO320-G030 is a double-barred isolated spiral, but its compact and obscured nuclear starburst (SFR~15 Msun/yr; Av~40 mag) resembles those of more luminous ULIRGs. In the outflow, the 1-0/2-1 ratio is enhanced with respect to the rest of the galaxy and the CO(4-3) transition is undetected. This indicates that the outflowing molecular gas is less excited than the gas in the nuclear starburst (launching site) and the galaxy disk. Non-LTE radiative transfer modeling reveals that the properties of the outflow molecular clouds differ from those of the nuclear and disk clouds: The kinetic temperature is lower (~9 K) in the outflow, and the outflowing clouds have lower column densities. Assuming a 10^-4 CO abundance, the large internal velocity gradients, 60^+250_-45 km/s/pc, imply that the outflowing molecular clouds are not bound by self-gravity. All this suggests that the life-cycle (formation, collapse, dissipation) of the disk clouds might differ from that of the outflowing clouds which might not be able to form stars. The low Tkin of the molecular outflow remains constant up to 1.7 kpc. This indicates that the heating by the hotter ionized outflow phase is not efficient and may favor the survival of the outflow molecular phase. The velocity structure of the outflow shows a 0.8 km/s/pc velocity gradient between 190-560 pc and then a constant maximum velocity (~750 km/s) up to 1.7 kpc. This is compatible with a pure gravitational evolution of the outflow under certain mass outflow rate and launching velocity variations. Alternatively, ram pressure acceleration and cloud evaporation could explain the observed kinematics and size of the molecular phase., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Submillimetre and millimetre observations are important in probing the properties of the molecular gas and dust around obscured active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and their feedback. With very high-resolution (0."02x0."03 (2x3 pc)) ALMA 345 GHz observations of CO 3-2, HCO$^+$ 4-3, HCN 4-3 $\nu_2$=1$f$, and continuum we have studied the molecular outflow and nucleus of the extremely radio-quiet lenticular galaxy NGC1377. The outflow is resolved, revealing a 150 pc long, clumpy, high-velocity, collimated molecular jet. The molecular emission is emerging from the spine of the jet with an average diameter of 3-7 pc. A narrow-angle, rotating molecular wind surrounds the jet and is enveloped by a larger-scale, slower CO-emitting structure. The jet and narrow wind are turbulent ($\sigma>$40 kms$^{-1}$) and have steep radial gas excitation gradients. The jet shows velocity reversals that we propose are caused by precession, or episodic directional changes. We suggest that an important process powering the outflow is magneto-centrifugal driving. In contrast, the large-scale CO-envelope may be a slow wind, or cocoon that stems from jet-wind interactions. An asymmetric, nuclear r$\sim$2 pc and hot (>180 K) dust structure with a high molecular column density, N(H$_2$)$\sim1.8 \times 10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$, is detected in continuum and vibrationally excited HCN. Its luminosity is likely powered by a buried AGN. The mass of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) is estimated to $\sim9\times10^6$ M$_\odot$ and the SMBH of NGC1377 appears to be at the end of an intense phase of accretion. The nuclear growth may be fuelled by low-angular momentum gas inflowing from gas ejected in the molecular jet and wind. Such a feedback-loop of cyclic accretion and outflows would be an effective process in growing the nuclear SMBH. We present results from Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of CS from the nearby galaxy NGC 1068 ($\sim14$ Mpc). This Seyfert 2 barred galaxy possesses a circumnuclear disc (CND, $r\sim200$ pc) and a starburst ring (SB ring, $r\sim1.3$ kpc). These high-resolution maps ($\sim0.5$", $\sim35$ pc) allow us to analyse specific sub-regions in the galaxy and investigate differences in line intensity ratios and physical conditions, particularly those between the CND and SB ring. Local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) analysis of the gas is used to calculate CS densities in each sub-region, followed by non-LTE analysis conducted using the radiative transfer code RADEX to fit observations and constrain gas temperature, CS column density and hydrogen density. Finally, the chemical code UCLCHEM is used to reconstruct the gas, allowing an insight into its origin and chemical history. The density of hydrogen in the CND is found to be $\geq10^5$ cm$^{-2}$, although exact values vary, reaching $10^6$ cm$^{-2}$ at the AGN. The conditions in the two arms of the SB ring appear similar to one another, though the density found ($\sim10^4$ cm$^{-2}$) is lower than in the CND. The temperature in the CND increases from east to west, and is also overall greater than found in the SB ring. These modelling methods indicate the requirement for multi-phase gas components in order to fit the observed emission over the galaxy. We investigate the relation between the detection of the $11.3\,\mu$m PAH feature in the nuclear ($\sim 24-230\,$pc) regions of 22 nearby Seyfert galaxies and the properties of the cold molecular gas. For the former we use ground-based (0.3-0.6" resolution) mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectroscopy. The cold molecular gas is traced by ALMA and NOEMA high (0.2-1.1") angular resolution observations of the CO(2-1) transition. Galaxies with a nuclear detection of the $11.3\,\mu$m PAH feature contain more cold molecular gas (median $1.6\times 10^7\,M_\odot$) and have higher column densities ($N({\rm H}_2) = 2 \times 10^{23}\,{\rm cm}^{-2}$) over the regions sampled by the mid-IR slits than those without a detection. This suggests that molecular gas plays a role in shielding the PAH molecules in the harsh environments of Seyfert nuclei. Choosing the PAH molecule naphthalene as an illustration, we compute its half-life in the nuclear regions of our sample when exposed to 2.5keV hard X-ray photons. We estimate shorter half-lives for naphthalene in nuclei without a $11.3\,\mu$m PAH detection than in those with a detection. The Spitzer/IRS PAH ratios on circumnuclear scales ($\sim$ 4" $\sim$ 0.25-1.3kpc) are in between model predictions for neutral and partly ionized PAHs. However, Seyfert galaxies in our sample with the highest nuclear H$_2$ column densities are not generally closer to the neutral PAH tracks. This is because in the majority of our sample galaxies, the CO(2-1) emission in the inner $\sim$ 4" is not centrally peaked and in some galaxies traces circumnuclear sites of strong star formation activity. Spatially resolved observations with the MIRI medium-resolution spectrograph (MRS) on the James Webb Space Telescope will be able to distinguish the effects of an active galactic nucleus (AGN) and star formation on the PAH emission in nearby AGN., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Sulphur is one of the most abundant elements in the Universe. Surprisingly, sulphuretted molecules are not as abundant as expected in the interstellar medium, and the identity of the main sulphur reservoir is still an open question. Our goal is to investigate the H$_{2}$S chemistry in dark clouds, as this stable molecule is a potential sulphur reservoir. Using millimeter observations of CS, SO, H$_{2}$S, and their isotopologues, we determine the physical conditions and H$_{2}$S abundances along the cores TMC 1-C, TMC 1-CP, and Barnard 1b. The gas-grain model Nautilus is then used to model the sulphur chemistry and explore the impact of photo-desorption and chemical desorption on the H$_2$S abundance. Our model shows that chemical desorption is the main source of gas-phase H$_2$S in dark cores. The measured H$_{2}$S abundance can only be fitted if we assume that the chemical desorption rate decreases by more than a factor of 10 when $n_{\rm H}>2\times10^{4}$. This change in the desorption rate is consistent with the formation of thick H$_2$O and CO ice mantles on grain surfaces. The observed SO and H$_2$S abundances are in good agreement with our predictions adopting an undepleted value of the sulphur abundance. However, the CS abundance is overestimated by a factor of $5-10$. Along the three cores, atomic S is predicted to be the main sulphur reservoir. We conclude that the gaseous H$_2$S abundance is well reproduced, assuming undepleted sulphur abundance and chemical desorption as the main source of H$_2$S. The behavior of the observed H$_{2}$S abundance suggests a changing desorption efficiency, which would probe the snowline in these cores. Our model, however, overestimates the observed gas-phase CS abundance. Given the uncertainty in the sulphur chemistry, our data are consistent with a cosmic elemental S abundance with an uncertainty of a factor of 10., Comment: 23 pages, 16 figures

AGN-driven outflows are believed to play an important role in regulating the growth of galaxies mostly via negative feedback. However, their effects on their hosts are far from clear, especially for low and moderate luminosity Seyferts. To investigate this issue, we have obtained cold molecular gas observations, traced by the CO(2-1) transition, using the NOEMA interferometer of five nearby (distances between 19 and 58 Mpc) Seyfert galaxies. The resolution of approx. 0.3-0.8 arcsec (approx. 30-100 pc) and field of view of NOEMA allowed us to study the CO(2-1) morphology and kinematics in the nuclear regions (approx. 100 pc) and up to radial distances of approx. 900 pc. We have detected CO(2-1) emission in all five galaxies with disky or circumnuclear ring like morphologies. We derived cold molecular gas masses on nuclear (approx. 100 pc) and circumnuclear (approx. 650 pc) scales in the range from $10^6$ to $10^7$M$_{\odot}$ and from $10^7$ to $10^8$ $M_{\odot}$, respectively. In all of our galaxies the bulk of this gas is rotating in the plane of the galaxy. However, non-circular motions are also present. In NGC 4253, NGC 4388 and NGC 7465, we can ascribe the streaming motions to the presence of a large-scale bar. In Mrk 1066 and NGC 4388, the non-circular motions in the nuclear regions are explained as outflowing material due to the interaction of the AGN wind with molecular gas in the galaxy disk. We conclude that for an unambiguous and precise interpretation of the kinematics of the cold molecular gas we need a detailed knowledge of the host galaxy (i.e., presence of bars, interactions, etc) as well as of the ionized gas kinematics and the ionization cone geometry., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 23 pages, 17 figures

We present the highlights from our recent study of 22 local (z$<$0.025) type-1 LINERs from the Palomar Survey, on the basis of optical long-slit spectroscopic observations taken with TWIN/CAHA, ALFOSC/NOT and HST/STIS (Cazzoli et al. 2018). Our goals were threefold: (a) explore the AGN- nature of these LINERs by studying the broad (BLR-originated) H$\alpha$ component; (b) derive a reliable interpretation for the multiple narrow components of emission lines by studying their kinematics and ionisation mechanism (via standard BPTs); (c) probe the neutral gas in the nuclei of these LINERs for the first time. We investigate the role of dense Mpc-scale environments in processing molecular gas of cluster galaxies as they fall into the cluster cores. We consider $\sim20$ luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) in intermediate-$z$ clusters, from the Hershel Lensing Survey and the Local Cluster Substructure Survey. They include MACS J0717.5+3745 at $z=0.546$ and Abell 697, 963, 1763, and 2219 at $z=0.2-0.3$. We have performed far infrared to ultraviolet spectral energy distribution modeling of the LIRGs, which span cluster-centric distances within $r/r_{200}\simeq0.2-1.6$. We have observed the LIRGs in CO(1$\rightarrow$0) or CO(2$\rightarrow$1) with the Plateau de Bure interferometer and its successor NOEMA, as part of five observational programs carried out between 2012 and 2017. We have compared the molecular gas to stellar mass ratio $M(H_2)/M_\star$, star formation rate (SFR), and depletion time ($\tau_{\rm dep}$) of the LIRGs with those of a compilation of cluster and field star forming galaxies. The targeted LIRGs have SFR, $M(H_2)/M_\star$, and $\tau_{\rm dep}$ that are consistent with those of both main sequence (MS) field galaxies and star forming galaxies from the comparison sample. However we find that the depletion time, normalized to the MS value, increases with increasing $r/r_{200}$, with a significance of $2.8\sigma$, which is ultimately due to a deficit of cluster core LIRGs with $\tau_{\rm dep}\gtrsim\tau_{\rm dep,MS}$. We suggest that a rapid exhaustion of the molecular gas reservoirs occurs in the cluster LIRGs and is effective in suppressing their star formation. This mechanism may explain the exponential decrease of the fraction of cluster LIRGs with cosmic time. The compression of the gas in LIRGs, possibly induced by intra-cluster medium shocks, may be responsible for the short depletion timescales, observed in a large fraction of cluster core LIRGs., Comment: 26 pages, 10 figures, 5 tables, A&A in press
