International audience; Starting from the Engadine Panorama – designed by Giovanni Segantini for the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris – this contribution aims at retracing the relationship between perception and representation of some mountain landscapes. The 400 square metres of painted surface of the Engadine Panorama was an artistic synthesis that represented a territory reshaped by imagination. The observer was optically and emotionally engaged through a “script of the landscape”. In this way, the idea of Engadine became a shared narrative, capable of structuring an iconic mythology. Archetypal figures of landscape have progressively been shifted to a more conceptual level. They become backgrounds in the interest of a communication strategy. Advertising has replaced visual arts in conveying images, symbols, ideas, beliefs and behavioural patterns. The bucolic and romantic image of alpine landscape disappears exploring the Apennines’ landscape. How to start a dis-imagining process to renew the relationship between people and their environment and regain knowledge on how to act inside it, restoring the third dimension of the space flattened in the images?

La ricerca si concentra sull’inserimento di grandi infrastrutture nel paesaggio, e sui loro possibili impatti. Per individuarne le specifiche interazioni, è necessario determinare la qualità del paesaggio, suddividendolo oggettivamente in diverse tipologie, considerando caratteri fisici, ecologici e percettivi. E’ stata così sviluppata una metodologia innovativa basata sulla costruzione di una check list, una serie di domande da seguire sia in fase di progettazione sia nella successiva valutazione dell’opera e dei suoi impatti. Ciò porta alla redazione di linee guida per la conservazione del paesaggio, già dal momento della progettazione. Inoltre la check list è uno strumento aperto che permette all’utilizzatore (progettista/ valutatore) di individuare il giusto grado di dettaglio in funzione delle condizioni e dei problemi specifici., IN_BO. The interdependence between human activities and natural environment has shaped the forest landscape in Italy, developing and preserving high ecological,economic and cultural landscape values, especially in mountainous areas where the environmental conditions are harder. The altopiano delle Rocche in Central Italy, including Lucoli, Ovindoli, Rocca di Mezzo and Rocca di Cambio municipalities, is characterized by the conservation of a rich heritage of agricultural and forest biodiversity, which, however, is currently threatened by the extended land abandonment. In the light of this, this territory may be exploited as remarkable case study for sustainable ecological planning and forest management strategies targeted to stop the agricultural and forest biodiversity progressive loss. The recovery of forest and agro-pastoral activities should be included under a multifunctional perspective to improve mountainous areas. A broader ethical framework, which takes into account the intrinsic value of the natural resources,and the participatory approach in the planning process are the cornerstones of the strategy. Distinctively assessing the economic value of the provision of ecosystem services is essential in order to recover and preserve the traditional land uses according to a sustainable rural management.
