In various cases, it is desirable to examine and describe fresh rock avalanche deposits, especially where the deposit is subject to rapid change due to the potential melting of a snowy and icy matrix, as is the case for many ice-rock avalanches on glaciers(e.g.,Dufresneetal.2019). This case also differs because the Joffre rock avalanches travelled beyond glaciers into forested terrain, and the second event triggered a debris flood that extended the reach of the landslides (Friele et al. 2020). In this paper, we examine the influence of the 27 October 2012, Mw 7.8 earthquake on landslide occurrence in the southern half of Haida Gwaii (formerly Queen Charlotte Islands), British Columbia, Canada. Our 1350 km2 study area is undisturbed, primarily forested terrain that has not experienced road building or timber harvesting. Our inventory of landslide polygons is based on optical airborne and spaceborne images acquired between 2007 and 2018, from which we extracted and mapped 446 individual landslides (an average of 33 landslides per 100 km2). The landslide rate in years without major earthquakes averages 19.4 per year, or 1.4/100 km2/year, and the annual average area covered by non-seismically triggered landslides is 35 ha/year. The number of landslides identified in imagery closely following the 2012 earthquake, and probably triggered by it, is 244 or an average of about 18 landslides per 100 km2. These landslides cover a total area of 461 ha. In the following years—2013–2016 and 2016–2018—the number of landslides fell, respectively, to 26 and 13.5 landslides per year. In non-earthquake years, most landslides happen on south-facing slopes, facing the prevailing winds. In contrast, during or immediately after the earthquake, up to 32% of the landslides occurred on north and northwest-facing slopes. Although we could not find imagery from the day after the earthquake, overview reconnaissance flights 10 and 16 days later showed that most of the landslides were recent, suggesting they were co-seismic. The Lakelse Lake area in northwestern British Columbia, Canada, has a long history, and prehistory, of rapid sensitive clay landslides moving on very low gradients. However, until now, many landslides have gone undetected. We use an array of modern tools to identify hitherto unknown or poorly known landslide deposits, including acoustic subbottom profiles, multibeam sonar, and LiDAR. The combination of these methods reveals not only landslide deposits, but also geomorphic and sedimentologic structures that give clues about landslide type and mode of emplacement. LiDAR and bathymetric data reveal the areal extent of landslide deposits as well as the orientation of ridges that differentiate between spreading and flowing kinematics. The subbottom profiles show two-dimensional structures of disturbed landslide deposits, including horst and grabens indicative of landslides classified as spreads. A preliminary computer tomography (CT) scan of a sediment core confirms the structures of one subbottom profile. In this study, high resolution surface measurements of diverse slope movements are compared to environmental factors such as ground surface temperature (GST) and snow cover, in order to reveal and compare velocity fluctuations caused by changing environmental conditions. The data cover 2 years (2011-2013) of Global Positioning System (GPS) and GST measurements at 18 locations on various slope movement types within an alpine study site in permafrost (Mattertal, Switzerland). Velocities have been estimated based on accurate daily GPS solutions. The mean annual velocities (MAV) observed at all GPS stations varied between 0.006 and 6.3 ma. MAV were higher in the period 2013 compared to 2012 at all stations. The acceleration in 2013 was accompanied by a longer duration of the snow cover and zero curtain and slightly lower GST. The amplitude (0-600 %) and the timing of the intra-annual variability were generally similar in both periods. At most stations, an annual cycle in the movement signal was observed, with a phase lag of 1-4 months to GST. Maximum velocity typically occurred in late summer and autumn, and minimum velocity in late winter and beginning of spring. The onset of acceleration always started in spring during the snowmelt period. At two stations located on steep rock glacier tongues, overprinted on the annual cycle, short-term peaks of velocity increase, occurred during the snowmelt period, indicating a strong influence of meltwater. The Todagin Creek landslide is located at 57.61° N 129.98° W in Northwest British Columbia. A seismic station 90 km north of the landslide recorded the event at 1643 hours coordinated universal time (UTC; 0943 hours Pacific daylight time (PDT)) on October 3, 2006. The signal verifies the discovery and relative time bounds provided by a hunting party in the valley. The landslide initiated as a translational rock slide on sedimentary rock dipping down slope at 34° and striking parallel to the valley. The landslide transformed into a debris avalanche and had a total volume estimated at 4 Mm. An elevation drop of 771 m along a planar length of 1,885 m resulted in a travel angle (fahrböschung) of 21.3°. The narrowest part of the landslide through the transport zone is 345 m. The widest part of the divergent toe of the landslide reaches a width of 1,010 m. Landslide debris impounded a lake of approximately 32 ha and destroyed an additional 67 ha of forest. The impoundment took 7 to 10 days to fill, with muddied waters observed downstream on October 13. No clear linkage exists with precipitation and temperature records preceding the landslide, but strong diurnal temperature cycles occurred in the days prior to the event. Abstract: Landslides have long been overlooked or underestimated as important natural disturbance agents. In particular the ecological role of landslides in maintaining biological diversity has been largely ignored. Here we provide a western Canadian (British Columbian) perspective on the influences of landslides on biophysical diversity, which is related in several ways to biological diversity. We recognize several types of biophysical/ecological diversity: site diversity, soil diversity, and the derivative habitat or ecosystem (including aquatic ecosystems) diversity. There are also a variety of landslide types, depending on materials and on the rate and style of movement. We discuss the roles of different landslide types on various aspects of terrestrial diversity. Landslides are simultaneously depositional and erosional processes that influence sites by redistributing materials and changing surface expression — usually creating a complex microtopography that can include very dry ridges and hummocks, and sometimes depressions with standing water. Landslide impacts to site also influence soil and soil development. Portions of landslides with exposed parent material are set back to the initial stages of soil development and ecological succession. Landslides can also change soil density, structure, porosity, surface texture, chemistry and microclimate. By changing site and soil, landslides also influence habitat. Landslides influence habitat diversity by engendering a mosaic of seral stages (often both primary and secondary), and in overwhelmingly forested landscapes often create nodes or hotspots of non-forested habitat and biota. In some areas, like the boreal forest, there is an important interplay between landslides and fire, while on the coast of British Columbia debris and snow avalanches can be the dominant disturbance agent. Low-gradient and deep-seated landslides are often opportunistically colonized by beaver and other water and shrub-loving fauna. Sag ponds and impounded streams provide aquatic habitat — often with standing dead trees. Accelerator radiocarbon dating of 147 charcoal samples recovered from colluvial and alluvial fan deposits at 29 sites was used to reconstruct the Holocene fire history of an inland temperate rainforest watershed in east-central British Columbia (BC), Canada. Radiocarbon dates ranged from 182 to 9558 cal. yr BP, with prominent peaks in the probability distribution of calibrated dates at c. 7100, 3900, 2300, 1600 and 250–1000 cal. yr BP. The inferred median fire return interval (FRI) was 800–1200 cal. yr, depending on the extent of inbuilt age errors resulting from charring of wood pre-dating actual fire ages. This FRI is likely an overestimate, as less severe events may not have created sufficient erosion and slope instability to preserve a record of charcoal in buried soils and slope deposits. Median time since fire was 467 cal. yr based on ages of the uppermost charcoal found at each site, but the severity of heart-rots in the dominant redcedars (Thuja plicata Donn ex D. Don) prevented independent confirmation of stand ages by dendrochronology. Sites with multiple charcoal-containing layers having similar radiocarbon ages can be explained with reference to contemporary post-fire mass-wasting processes. Peaks in fire-related sedimentation probability coincided broadly with periods of higher fire frequency c. 600–1000, 1300–2400 and 3500–4500 cal. yr BP inferred from sedimentary charcoal records at subalpine sites in southwestern BC. Abstract: At least thirty-eight, large, catastrophic landslides, each either larger than 0.5 M m3 or longer than 1 km, have occurred in northern British Columbia in the last three decades. The landslides include low-gradient flowslides in cohesive sediments, long-runout rock slides (rock avalanches), and complex rock slide-flows. The flowslides have occurred in a variety of sediments, including glaciolacustrine silt, clay-rich till, and clay-rich colluvium. The rock failures have happened in weak shale overlain by sandstone and volcanic rocks. The frequency of large landslides in northern British Columbia appears to be increasing, suggesting a link to climate change. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In early July 2002, a large rockslide–debris avalanche occurred on the west slope of the Pink Mountain anticline in northeastern British Columbia (57°04′N; 122°52′W). The slopes have been subjected to previous deformation and landsliding. Pre- and post-slide digital elevation models (DEMs) were created from aerial photography. Approximately 1.04 M m3 of sandstone and shale travelled nearly 2 km from an elevation of 1460 m to 1010 m. The landslide has a fahrböschung of 11.6° and covered 43 ha. The rock debris entrained a certain amount of fine-textured till and colluvium increasing its volume by 15%. This entrainment caused partial liquefaction of the underlying soil thereby enhancing the mobility of the landslide. We used a Bingham rheological model to dynamically model the landslide with excellent correspondence between the analysis of the actual observed behaviour of the landslide. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: A landslide of 2.5 million m3 of sensitive glaciomarine sediments, predominantly silty clays, occurred at Mink Creek near Terrace, British Columbia (54°27′N, 128°37′W) some time between 1 December 1993 and 9 January 1994. We divide the landslide deposit into seven zones, distinguished on the basis of morphological characteristics. We interpret processes of flowing, spreading and sliding, often in succession, as the landslide retrogressed. The landslide is similar to other movements involving sensitive marine sediments, but is unique in that both flowing and spreading occurred, involving multiple rupture surfaces. Thus the landslide may be classified as a composite earth flow–spread. A decade of warm and wet climate preceded the landslide event. Since most global circulation models predict a warmer and wetter future for Terrace, more of these landslides may be expected. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A flowslide involving more than 2.5 million m3 of sensitive glaciomarine sediment occurred near Terrace, British Columbia (54° 27′ N, 128° 37′ W) sometime between 1 December 1993 and 9 January 1994. Geotechnical measurements confirm the presence of quick clay at the site; mineralogical and geochemical investigations reveal its similarities to the quick clays in eastern Canada, Scandinavia, and Japan. Jökulhlaups from lakes dammed by Tulsequah Glacier in northwestern British Columbia have occurred regularly since the early twentieth century. The floods commenced after decades of downwasting and retreat of the glacier from its Holocene maximum position, which it achieved in the nineteenth century. Hydrometric data and other records are used to reconstruct the times and peak discharges of floods from two glacier-dammed lakes. Tulsequah Lake formed in the early 1900s when a tributary glacier separated from Tulsequah Glacier, creating an ice-free embayment between the two. The lake grew rapidly in surface area and volume in the first half of the twentieth century, but later, with continued glacier retreat, it decreased in size. The first jökulhlaups from Tulsequah Lake were the largest. Peak and total discharges decreased as the lake became smaller. Today, Tulsequah Lake is small, and it will disappear completely if Tulsequah Glacier retreats any further. A second lake (Lake No Lake), however, has formed and grown in size as Tulsequah Lake has diminished. Lake No Lake developed from a subglacial water body in a tributary valley, 7 km upglacier from Tulsequah Lake. Like Tulsequah Lake, Lake No Lake rapidly grew in area and volume during its youth, and in the 1970s it began to generate its own jökulhlaups. Lake No Lake appears to be following the same evolutionary path as Tulsequah Lake – its volume is now decreasing due to downwasting of Tulsequah Glacier, and its jökulhlaups are beginning to diminish. As Tulsequah Glacier continues to shrink in response to climatic warming, additional glacier-dammed lakes may form, renewing the cycle of outburst flood activity. Earth's climate is warming and will continue to warm as the century progresses. High mountains and high latitudes are experiencing the greatest warming of all regions on Earth and also are some of the most sensitive areas to climate change, in part because ecosystems and natural processes in these areas are intimately linked to the cryosphere. Evidence is mounting that warming will further reduce permafrost and snow and ice cover in high mountains, which in turn will destabilize many slopes, alter sediment delivery to streams, and change subalpine and alpine ecosystems. This paper contributes to the continuing discussion of impacts of climate change on mountain environments by comparing and discussing processes and trends in the mountains of western Canada and the European Alps. We highlight the effects of physiography and climate on physical processes occurring in the two regions. Processes of interest include landslides and debris flows induced by glacier debuttressing, alpine permafrost thaw, changes in rainfall regime, formation and sudden drainage of glacier- and moraine-dammed lakes, ice avalanches, glacier surges, and large-scale sediment transfers due to rapid deglacierization. Our analysis points out the value of integrating observations and data from different areas of the world to better understand these processes and their impacts. • Climate change is accelerating mass wasting in high mountains. • Deglaciation and permafrost degradation is the main driver of slope instability. • Regional differences are controlled by climate, topography and geology. • Integration of data from different regions can help fill knowledge gaps. Landslides are destructive natural hazards that cause substantial loss of life and impact on natural and built environments. Landslide frequencies are important inputs for hazard assessments. However, dating landslides in remote areas is often challenging. We propose a novel landslide dating technique based on Segmented WAvelet-DEnoising and stepwise linear fitting (SWADE), using the Landsat archive (1985–2017). SWADE employs the principle that vegetation is often removed by landsliding in vegetated areas, causing a temporal decrease in normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). The applicability of SWADE and two previously published methods for landslide dating, harmonic modelling and LandTrendr, are evaluated using 66 known landslides in the Buckinghorse River area, northeastern British Columbia, Canada. SWADE identifies sudden changes of NDVI values in the time series and this may result in one or more probable landslide occurrence dates. The most-probable date range identified by SWADE detects 52% of the landslides within a maximum error of 1 year, and 62% of the landslides within a maximum error of 2 years. Comparatively, these numbers increase to 68% and 80% when including the two most-probable landslide date ranges, respectively. Harmonic modelling detects 79% of the landslides with a maximum error of 1 year, and 82% of the landslides with a maximum error of 2 years, but requires expert judgement and a well-developed seasonal vegetation cycle in contrast to SWADE. LandTrendr, originally developed for mapping deforestation, only detects 42% of landslides within a maximum error of 2 years. SWADE provides a promising fully automatic method for landslide dating, which can contribute to constructing landslide frequency-magnitude distributions in remote areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the USA, climate change is expected to have an adverse impact on slope stability in Alaska. However, to date, there has been limited work done in Alaska to assess if changes in slope stability are occurring. To address this issue, we used 30-m Landsat imagery acquired from 1984 to 2016 to establish an inventory of 24 rock avalanches in a 5000-km2 area of Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve in southeast Alaska. A search of available earthquake catalogs revealed that none of the avalanches were triggered by earthquakes. Analyses of rock-avalanche magnitude, mobility, and frequency reveal a cluster of large (areas ranging from 5.5 to 22.2 km2), highly mobile (height/length < 0.3) rock avalanches that occurred from June 2012 through June 2016 (near the end of the 33-year period of record). These rock avalanches began about 2  years after the long-term trend in mean annual maximum air temperature may have exceeded 0 °C. Possibly more important, most of these rock avalanches occurred during a multiple-year period of record-breaking warm winter and spring air temperatures. These observations suggested to us that rock avalanches in the study area may be becoming larger because of rock-permafrost degradation. However, other factors, such as accumulating elastic strain, glacial thinning, and increased precipitation, may also play an important role in preconditioning slopes for failure during periods of warm temperatures. Radiocarbon and dendrochronological dating of glacially overridden stumps and detrital wood indicates that two outlet glaciers of the Juneau Icefield advanced shortly before the 'Little Ice Age'. Tulsequah Glacier advanced to within 2.4 km of its all-time Holocene limit between ad 865 and ad 940. Llewellyn Glacier, one of the largest glaciers in British Columbia, advanced sometime between ad 300 and ad 500, and reached to within 400 m of its Holocene limit between ad 1035 and ad 1210, well before the climactic, 'classical' 'Little Ice Age' advances of the past several centuries. Our data show that some glaciers in western North America were extensive and expanding at times when alpine glaciers have, in the past, been assumed to be restricted. The evidence raises questions about how to define the time of the beginning of the 'Little Ice Age' and, perhaps more importantly, about the utility of the term. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dissected colluvial sediments on a Peace River terrace at Bear Flat, northeast British Columbia enclosed a late Pleistocene micromammalian faunule. The fossil remains, including a few loosely articulated skulls and mandibles, were dominated by taiga voles (Microtus xanthognathus). The Bear Flat site constitutes the second fossil occurrence in the region of this elusive species, which is unknown in British Columbia in historic times. The late Pleistocene age, determined by accelerator mass spectrometry directly on taiga vole bone collagen, is consistent with the ages of widespread taiga vole records peripheral to the Laurentide ice sheet in western, mid-western, and eastern North America. The presence of allo-chronous remains within a comprehensively dated sedimentary sequence provides a cautionary note about straightforward acceptance of relative stratigraphic dating. The retreat of glaciers in response to global warming has the potential to trigger landslides in glaciated regions around the globe. Landslides that enter fjords or lakes can cause tsunamis, which endanger people and infrastructure far from the landslide itself. Here we document the ongoing movement of an unstable slope (total volume of 455 × 106 m3) in Barry Arm, a fjord in Prince William Sound, Alaska. The slope moved rapidly between 2010 and 2017, yielding a horizontal displacement of 120 m, which is highly correlated with the rapid retreat and thinning of Barry Glacier. Should the entire unstable slope collapse at once, preliminary tsunami modeling suggests a maximum runup of 300 m near the landslide, which may have devastating impacts on local communities. Our findings highlight the need for interdisciplinary studies of recently deglaciated fjords to refine our understanding of the impact of climate change on landslides and tsunamis. Plain Language Summary: Climate warming and the resulting retreat of glaciers may destabilize mountain slopes, triggering landslides. For those landslides that enter fjords, the induced tsunamis are a significant hazard to coastal communities. Despite this risk, most periglacial landslides have been detected only after the event. Using satellite data, we detect a large, slow‐moving landslide in Barry Arm, Alaska, and assess its hazard potential. The volume of the landslide is estimated to be 8 times larger than the 17 June 2017 Karrat Fjord landslide in Greenland, which generated a tsunami and killed four people. We found that the Barry Arm landslide moved rapidly between 2010 and 2017, while Barry Glacier quickly thinned and retreated from the landslide area. If the entire unstable slope would collapse, it could generate a tsunami with a runup up to 300 m in the vicinity of the landslide with hazardous waves reaching local communities in Prince William Sound, which is frequently visited by fishermen, tourists, and cruise ships. Our study highlights the need to systematically assess the emerging hazards of landslides and tsunamis influenced by climate change. Two catastrophic landslides occurred in quick succession on 13 and 16 May 2019, from the north face of Joffre Peak, Cerise Creek, southern Coast Mountains, British Columbia. With headscarps at 2560 m and 2690 m elevation, both began as rock avalanches, rapidly transforming into debris flows along middle Cerise Creek, and finally into debris floods affecting the fan. Beyond the fan margin, a flood surge on Cayoosh Creek reached bankfull and attenuated rapidly downstream; only fine sediment reached Duffey Lake. The toe of the main debris flow deposit reached 4 km from the headscarp, with a travel angle of 0.28, while the debris flood phase reached the fan margin 5.9 km downstream, with a travel angle of 0.22. Photogrammetry indicates the source volume of each event is 2–3 Mm3, with combined volume of 5 Mm3. Lidar differencing, used to assess deposit volume, yielded a similar total result, although error in the depth estimate introduced large volume error masking the expected increase due to dilation and entrainment. The average velocity of the rock avalanche-debris flow phases, from seismic analysis, was ~ 25–30 m/s, and the velocity of the 16 May debris flood on the upper fan, from super-elevation and boulder sizes, was 5–10 m/s. The volume of debris deposited on the fan was ~ 104 m3, 2 orders of magnitude less than the avalanche/debris flow phases. Progressive glacier retreat and permafrost degradation were likely the conditioning factors; precursor rockfall activity was noted at least ~6 months previous; thus, the mountain was primed to fail. The coalescence and subsequent divergence of glaciers near the McLeod Lake map area during the last (Fraser) glaciation are recorded by landforms, ice-flow indicators, and the distribution of sediments. Ice initially flowed into the study area from the northwest, with at least one fluctuation in the ice-front position. Ice flow during glacial maximum was generally to the northeast and transitioned to the east during deglaciation. The Quaternary stratigraphic record spans the Fraser Glaciation and is represented by a sequence of advance glaciolacustrine sediments, multiple till units, retreat glaciolacustrine and glaciofluvial sediments, and associated postglacial aeolian material. The surficial geology is dominated by thick, streamlined till that thins where relief is high. Glaciofluvial outwash occurs mostly in northeast- and southeast-trending meltwater channels, while ice-contact glaciofluvial deposits and ablation till occur in depressions throughout the region. Extensive glaciolacustrine deposits blanket low-lying regions in the southern parts of the study area. Meltwater and ice-flow features suggest that deglaciation in the region was dominantly frontal retreat and that ice was largely active as it retreated through the study area. Postglacial aeolian activity was brief; optical dating on K-feldspar from aeolian landforms indicates that the landforms had stabilized by between 8.71-10.71 and 12.3-14.3 ka, and provides minimum ages for ice retreat. The data from the study area are evaluated with similar data from adjacent regions to develop an ice-flow history, and refine the conceptual model of deglaciation for the northern Interior Plateau. The frequency of large supraglacial landslides (rock avalanches) occurring in glacial environments is thought to be increasing due to feedbacks with climate warming and permafrost degradation. However, it is difficult to (i) test this; (ii) establish cause–effect relationships; and (iii) determine associated lag-times, due to both temporal and spatial biases in detection rates. Here we applied the Google Earth Engine supraglacial debris input detector (GERALDINE) to Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve (GLBA), Alaska. We find that the number of rock avalanches (RAs) has previously been underestimated by 53 %, with a bias in past detections towards large area RAs. In total, GLBA experienced 69 RAs during 1984–2020, with the highest frequency in the last three years. Of these, 58 % were deposited into the accumulation zone and then sequestered into the ice within two years. RA sources clustered spatially at high elevations and around certain peaks and ridges, predominantly at the boundary of modelled permafrost likelihood. They also clustered temporally, occurring mainly between May and September when air temperatures were high enough to initiate rock-permafrost degradation mechanisms. There was a chronic background debris supply from RAs, with at least one RA occurring in all but nine years; however, a debris rich period during 2012–2016 was driven by three large RAs delivering 44 % of all (1984–2020) debris (by area). Comparable investigation of slope-failures in other remote currently glaciated regions is lacking. If RA rates are similar elsewhere, especially the bias towards emplacement onto/into accumulation zones, their contribution to glacial sediment budgets has been globally underestimated. We mapped landslide susceptibility in Kamyaran city of Kurdistan Province, Iran, using a robust deep-learning (DP) model based on a combination of extreme learning machine (ELM), deep belief network (DBN), back propagation (BP), and genetic algorithm (GA). A total of 118 landslide locations were recorded and divided in the training and testing datasets. We selected 25 conditioning factors, and of these, we specified the most important ones by an information gain ratio (IGR) technique. We assessed the performance of the DP model using statistical measures including sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, F1-measure, and area under-the-receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Three benchmark algorithms, i.e., support vector machine (SVM), REPTree, and NBTree, were used to check the applicability of the proposed model. The results by IGR concluded that of the 25 conditioning factors, only 16 factors were important for our modeling procedure, and of these, distance to road, road density, lithology and land use were the four most significant factors. Results based on the testing dataset revealed that the DP model had the highest accuracy (0.926) of the compared algorithms, followed by NBTree (0.917), REPTree (0.903), and SVM (0.894). The landslide susceptibility maps prepared from the DP model with AUC = 0.870 performed the best. We consider the DP model a suitable tool for landslide susceptibility mapping. Quantifying the contribution of sediment delivered to rivers by landslides is needed to assess a river's sediment load in regions prone to mass wasting. Monitoring such events, however, remains difficult. This study utilised six years of remotely sensed imagery (PlanetScope and RapidEye, Imagery courtesy of Planet Labs, Inc., San Francisco, CA, USA), topographic surveys, and field observation to examine a hydro-geologically controlled, retrogressive landslide near a tributary to the Peace River, British Columbia. The slide has been active since 2014, delivering large amounts of sediment to the Peace River, visible in a persistent plume. Here, we quantify the landslide's sediment contribution to the Peace River, assess the hydro-meteorological drivers of plume variability, and test whether plume activity can be directly linked to landslide activity for monitoring purposes. Our results show that the landslide on average delivered 165,000 tonnes of sediment per year, a seven-fold increase of the tributary's regular load and near half of the Peace River's load at this location. Due to continuous erosion of landslide material, sediment supply is steady and fuelled by repeated failures. Using thresholding, the identification of 'high' plume activity was possible, which positively correlated with the water level in a nearby reservoir, a proxy for the state of groundwater in this region. We reason that 'high' plume activity is linked to increased groundwater pressure because landslide activity is groundwater-controlled and failures fuel sediment delivery to the Peace River. Unusual channel-amphitheatre landforms are present in Late Pleistocene–early Holocene, subaqueous fan and delta deposits in the glacial Lake Fraser basin, central British Columbia. The lake formed during the decay of the last Cordilleran Ice Sheet and drained ~11,500 years ago during a large outburst flood. The fronts of a delta and two subaqueous fans consisting of silt to fine sand are marked by branching networks of wide, nearly flat channels that terminate upstream in digitate, steep-walled amphitheatres. We propose that these channel-amphitheatre landforms formed by liquefaction flowslides that were induced by the rapid drawdown of glacial Lake Fraser during the outburst flood. Similar geomorphic forms, which we believe also to be associated with rapid drawdowns of large Late Pleistocene–early Holocene lakes, occur elsewhere in North America. A recent tailings dam failure and an intentional breaching of a 100-year-old hydroelectric dam provide insights into the processes responsible for the landforms. By using geomechanical analysis, we show how rapid lake drawdown can trigger liquefaction flowslides in deposits of silt to fine sand. The Late Wisconsinan deglaciation period was a time of rapid climate adjustment that resulted in the widespread transition from proglacial/paraglacial conditions to non-glacial settings favourable for plant and animal colonization. Establishing the timing of this transitional period in northeastern British Columbia provides constraints on the rate in which the biomes adapted during this interval of rapid climate change. Preserved aeolian landforms (geomorphic) and macrofossil assemblages (biological) are complementary proxies for interpreting climate amelioration. Paraglacial aeolian dunes in the Kiskatinaw dune field developed following the retreat of glacial Lake Peace which formed after the separation of the Cordilleran and Laurentide ice sheets. These parabolic sand dunes are vegetation-anchored landforms that indicate plant colonization bio-morphologically influenced aeolian activity during stabilization. Optical dating established that stabilization occurred about 10.8 ± 0.3 ka ago (weighted mean of six ages), around the same time interval in which vegetation transitioned from herb and shrub tundra to forest tundra, then to a boreal parkland. Radiocarbon ages from macrofossil assemblages at the Flatbed River section infer paraglacial conditions likely persisted to around 12 000 cal yrs BP and the site had characteristics of a forest tundra. At that time, the Flatbed River was a dry floodplain that transitioned to a pond setting in a boreal parkland after 12 447–11 941 cal yrs BP and before 11 690–11 279 cal yrs BP. The site transitioned from pond to bog after 10 149–9771 cal yrs BP, coincident with the onset of boreal forest conditions that were established by 9901–9607 cal yrs BP. Biome succession recorded at the Flatbed River section and the stabilization of sand dunes indicates that the site transitioned from a paraglacial setting associated with tundra to a non-glacial setting characterized by a boreal forest environment over approximately 2 ka (ca. 12.0–9.7 ka ago). However, the change from tundra to parkland forest conditions took <500 years (ca. 12.0–11.5 ka ago). With the development of remote sensing algorithms and increased access to satellite data, generating up-to-date, accurate land use/land cover (LULC) maps has become increasingly feasible for evaluating and managing changes in land cover as created by changes to ecosystem and land use. The main objective of our study is to evaluate the performance of Support Vector Machine (SVM), Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Maximum Likelihood Classification (MLC), Minimum Distance (MD), and Mahalanobis (MH) algorithms and compare them in order to generate a LULC map using data from Sentinel 2 and Landsat 8 satellites. Further, we also investigate the effect of a penalty parameter on SVM results. Our study uses different kernel functions and hidden layers for SVM and ANN algorithms, respectively. We generated the training and validation datasets from Google Earth images and GPS data prior to pre-processing satellite data. In the next phase, we classified the images using training data and algorithms. Ultimately, to evaluate outcomes, we used the validation data to generate a confusion matrix of the classified images. Our results showed that with optimal tuning parameters, the SVM classifier yielded the highest overall accuracy (OA) of 94%, performing better for both satellite data compared to other methods. In addition, for our scenes, Sentinel 2 date was slightly more accurate compared to Landsat 8. The parametric algorithms MD and MLC provided the lowest accuracy of 80.85% and 74.68% for the data from Sentinel 2 and Landsat 8. In contrast, our evaluation using the SVM tuning parameters showed that the linear kernel with the penalty parameter 150 for Sentinel 2 and the penalty parameter 200 for Landsat 8 yielded the highest accuracies. Zrebar Lake is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Iran and it plays an important role in the ecosystem of the environment, while its desiccation has a negative impact on the surrounded ecosystem. Despite this, this lake provides an interesting recreation setting in terms of ecotourism. The prediction and forecasting of the water level of the lake through simple but practical methods can provide a reliable tool for future lake water resource management. In the present study, we predict the daily water level of Zrebar Lake in Iran through well-known decision tree-based algorithms, including the M5 pruned (M5P), random forest (RF), random tree (RT) and reduced error pruning tree (REPT). We used five different water input combinations to find the most effective one. For our modeling, we chose 70% of the dataset for training (from 2011 to 2015) and 30% for model evaluation (from 2015 to 2017). We evaluated the models' performances using different quantitative (root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), coefficient of determination (R2), percent bias (PBIAS) and ratio of the root mean square error to the standard deviation of measured data (RSR)) and visual frameworks (Taylor diagram and box plot). Our results showed that water level with a one-day lag time had the highest effect on the result and, by increasing the lag time, its effect on the result was decreased. This result indicated that all the developed models had a good prediction capability, but the M5P model outperformed the others, followed by RF and RT equally and then REPT. Our results showed that these algorithms can predict water level accurately only with a one-day lag time in water level as an input and they are cost-effective tools for future predictions. The blocking of river courses by mass movements is very common in mountainous areas with deep and narrow valleys. Landslide dams may pose serious threats to people and their livelihoods downstream in the case of abrupt dam failure. Since the publication of benchmark reviews of Costa and Schuster (1988) and Korup (2002) , there is a growing number of studies focusing on the formation, stability, and short-term impacts of landslide dams. This review combines the insights of all these studies, builds on current concepts of landslide dams, and suggests ways to unify terminologies and classifications. We furthermore present a new worldwide database compiled from literature data. It contains 410 landslide dams >1 million m3 in volume that were formed since 1900 since these have the most complete data entries. These data show that dam longevity is, among other factors, correlated with the type of landslide forming the dam. Those formed by rock/debris avalanches and rockslides have longest lifespans. However, the influence of landslide type or material on dam longevity decreases with time after dam formation. To ensure consistency in the next database generation, we suggest guidelines for data collection to provide a solid basis for evaluating dam stability and governing factors. A preliminary classification matrix for landslide dam stability that combines topographic setting and the internal structure of the dam body is another outcome of our review. Furthermore, an evaluation of the various geomorphic stability indices proposed in the literature regarding their suitability and limitations in assessing dam formation and stability shows that they predict the probability of dam formation reasonably well, but that their application to longevity estimates requires further assessment. The geomorphic impacts of landslide dams in the short-, medium- and long-term are summarized and illustrated with key examples. Finally, for a better understanding of the factors controlling dam stability, we recommend to (1) include dam composition and sedimentary structures in future case studies, (2) maintain and update the worldwide database for sound statistical analyses, (3) refine landslide dam stability indices and test them for different landslide types, and (4) study hazard cascades related to multiple dams in one watershed. We manually detected and mapped 66 landslides from Landsat imagery over a 33-year period from 1985 to 2017 in the Buckinghorse River region, British Columbia, Canada. We semi-automatically determined landslide timing using the cumulative difference (CD) between the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and a fitted harmonic sinusoidal curve (CDNDVI). The semi-automated dating method was capable of determining the timing of 80% of the landslides using CDNDVI and 85% of the landslides after detrending CDNDVI (dCDNDVI). The CDNDVI method generally detects landslides too early and the dCDNDVI method is generally too late. Mean absolute errors (in days) are lower for the dCDNDVI (208 and 188) than the CDNDVI (227 and 267), respectively. This study, however, has many examples of extreme outliers with very large errors (>1000 days). Our method is portable to other remote regions as long as vegetation anomalies can be used as an indicator for landslide activity. We conclude that the timeseries of images available in the Landsat Archive are useful for landslide mapping, but the pixel size limits the size of the landslides that can be mapped. Mapping flood-prone areas is a key activity in flood disaster management. In this paper, we propose a new flood susceptibility mapping technique. We employ new ensemble models based on bagging as a meta-classifier and K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) coarse, cosine, cubic, and weighted base classifiers to spatially forecast flooding in the Haraz watershed in northern Iran. We identified flood-prone areas using data from Sentinel-1 sensor. We then selected 10 conditioning factors to spatially predict floods and assess their predictive power using the Relief Attribute Evaluation (RFAE) method. Model validation was performed using two statistical error indices and the area under the curve (AUC). Our results show that the Bagging–Cubic–KNN ensemble model outperformed other ensemble models. It decreased the overfitting and variance problems in the training dataset and enhanced the prediction accuracy of the Cubic–KNN model (AUC=0.660). We therefore recommend that the Bagging–Cubic–KNN model be more widely applied for the sustainable management of flood-prone areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We used a novel hybrid functional machine learning algorithm to predict the spatial distribution of landslides in the Sarkhoon watershed, Iran. We developed a new ensemble model which is a combination of a functional algorithm, stochastic gradient descent (SGD) and an AdaBoost (AB) Meta classifier namely ABSGD model to predict the landslides. The model incorporates 20 landslide conditioning factors, which we ranked using the least-square support vector machine (LSSVM) technique. For the modeling, we considered 98 landslide locations, of which 70% (79) were used for training and 30% (19) for validation processes. Model validation was performed using sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, the root mean square error (RMSE) and the area under the receiver operatic characteristic (AUC) curve. We also used soft computing benchmark models, including SGD, logistic regression (LR), logistic model tree (LMT) and functional tree (FT) algorithms for model validation and comparison. The selected conditioning factors were significant in landslide occurrence but distance to road was found to be the most important factor. The ABSGD model (AUC= 0.860) outperformed the LR (0.797), SGD (0.776), LMT (0.740) and FT (0.734) models. Our results confirm that the combined use of a functional algorithm and a Meta classifier prevents over-fitting, reduces noise and enhances the power prediction of the individual SGD algorithm for the spatial prediction of landslides. Glacial retreat in recent decades has exposed unstable slopes and allowed deep water to extend beneath some of those slopes. Slope failure at the terminus of Tyndall Glacier on 17 October 2015 sent 180 million tons of rock into Taan Fiord, Alaska. The resulting tsunami reached elevations as high as 193 m, one of the highest tsunami runups ever documented worldwide. Precursory deformation began decades before failure, and the event left a distinct sedimentary record, showing that geologic evidence can help understand past occurrences of similar events, and might provide forewarning. The event was detected within hours through automated seismological techniques, which also estimated the mass and direction of the slide - all of which were later confirmed by remote sensing. Our field observations provide a benchmark for modeling landslide and tsunami hazards. Inverse and forward modeling can provide the framework of a detailed understanding of the geologic and hazards implications of similar events.
