Social media has become an important part of our lives with the widespread use of the internet. On Facebook, the largest social media platform, people with similar interests can establish a group and communicate with each other. There are Facebook collegial groups created by teachers in many countries. The research aims to identify the similarities and differences of science teachers' share content on Facebook groups. In the study, the case pattern was adopted which is one of the qualitative research methods. as a data source, two Facebook groups established by science teachers in Turkey and Europe which were determined through criteria sampling were analyzed for one-month shares. 341 posts of science teachers' group in Turkey were analyzed by analysis method, 396 posts in Europe were subjected to descriptive analysis. Analysis results are presented in tables and compared. Based on the research results we can say science teachers in Turkey focus on course content while the ones in Europe are more interested in professional and personal development, scientific developments, and academic activities. The research results were compared with the education systems of countries, teacher training policies, and other studies in the field, and various suggestions were made. The study group of this research, which is planned to develop the Sustainable Scale of Earthquake Awareness, consists of the students studying at Duzce University in the academic year 2018-2019. 276 volunteer individuals (213 females, 63 males) participated to the research group determined by random sampling method. For confirmatory factor analysis, 434 female and 129 male volunteer students participated. 839 students, 647 of them were females (77,12%) and 192 of them were males (22,88%), supported the study. As a result of the exploratory factor analysis which is completed after testing the suitability of the data for analysis, the scale was constituted of three sub-factors consisting of 22 items. The factors that make up the scale explain 46,393% of the variance. The sub-factors of the scale were named based on the knowledge about the earthquake. The suitability of the obtained model was 0.072 for RMSEA; 0.90 for NFI, 0,89 for GFI, 0.063 for RMR and 0.86 for AGFI. As a result of the reliability analysis, the internal consistency coefficient (Cronbach alpha) of the scale was determined as 0.884. It is thought that this developed scale will provide support as a tool for educational purposes. It is recommended to carry out different researches that can help to investigate the awareness level about the earthquake with different variables.

It is important to create positive attitudes and enough knowledge for preservice science teachers about renewable energy for future. The aim of this research was to show the correlation between renewable energy knowledge and subdimensions of attitude towards renewable energy with Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The research was conducted by the analysis of 1145 pre-service teachers' answers to questionnaires data using SEM. Two questionnaires used for data collection which first was renewable energy knowledge scale that Cronbach's alpha was 0.82 and the second was renewable energy attitude scale that Cronbach's alpha was 0.87. Initially, Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin and Bartlett's tests were done with SPSS to test appropriateness of subdimensions to factor analysis. Exploratory factor analysis was done for the subdimensions that were seen to be suitable for factor analysis and then structural model was tested with LISREL. At the end of the SEM test, it was found that there are positive relations between renewable energy knowledge of preservice teachers and their attitudes towards renewable energy. The more knowledge and attitudes about renewable energy can be improved, the more positive attitudes and behaviors will be provided to individuals and the efficient use of renewable energy types will be realized.

The purpose of this study is to identify the factors that affect the secondary school students' attitudes in science. This study was conducted using survey method. The sample of the study was 503 students from four different secondary schools in Bartin and Düzce. Data were obtained using the Survey of Factors Affecting Students' Science Attitudes (SFASSA) and the Survey to Determine the Degree of Importance of Categories Affecting Students' Science Attitudes (SDDICASSA). Qualitative data were subjected to a content analysis. For the analysis of the quantitative data, descriptive analysis was used. According to the results of the study, teacher is the most important category affecting the students' science attitudes.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of scientific studies on students' scientific literacy and attitude towards science course. For the study, a middle school science study group was established by randomly selecting 30 students from the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. Participating students were given information about the programme. Students worked regularly for 12 weeks on topics of scientific research and held discussions on them. Students did research on information they collected during interviews. As a result, many students involved in the science group studies were able to increase their skills through discussion and exchange of views. Before the application, the students in the program were given a test which incorporated scientific literacy and attitude towards science course. Their attitudes about science were assessed and scored using a questionnaire. During the program of study, students were provided with discussion topics by the researcher. An additional goal was to encourage student participation in scientific processes. Twelve weeks after the application, the students were given the same questionnaire and test again. The data obtained were analysed using an SPSS program. Statistical results indicated that the students' scientific literacy had increased significantly, and that their attitudes towards science were more positive. In terms of both gender and class level of the students, a significant difference emerged after the application, when compared to before the application.

The purpose of this study was to discover the views of teacher candidates on the use of Slowmation in education. Fifty-one students from the Primary School Teaching Program took part in the study. An explanatory approach to the combined method, which enables both quantitative and qualitative research, was used in the study. In order to collect the quantitative data, the teacher candidates were surveyed using the Slowmation Opinion Scale. For the collection of the qualitative data, six of the teacher candidates were asked semi-structured questions during a focus group interview. The teacher candidates prepared slowmations devoted to elementary 4th and 5th grade biology subjects. The prepared slowmations were presented and the survey was carried out. In light of the data obtained, a focus group interview was conducted and the data compiled from the scale was expanded. According to the data, the student teachers defined the slowmations as enjoyable, rewarding, educational, creative, informative and stimulating. According to the qualitative data, on the other hand, they remarked that slowmations should be used in accordance with course requirements and would be more effective when implemented on groups of younger learners. They also stated that preparing slowmations had been difficult initially, particularly in the designing of the subject to be presented.

We propose a new shrinkage and variable selection method in linear regression, which is based on triple shrinkage on the regression coefficients. The new estimation method contains the ridge, lasso and elastic net as special cases. The term based on the shrunken estimator in the new method can provide estimates with a smaller length depending on the size of a new tuning parameter compared to the elastic net, maintaining the variable selection feature in the case of multicollinearity. The new estimator has the property of the grouping effect similar to that of the elastic net. The well-known coordinate descent algorithm is used to compute the coefficient path of the new estimator, efficiently. We conduct real data analysis and simulation studies to compare the new estimator with several methods including the lasso and elastic net. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

INTRODUCTION: The arrival times of ambulances to the scene are a significant health quality indicator in terms of patient health and the public's trust in the system. In this study, it was reviewed whether complaints regarding ambulances are concentrated on certain days, hours, months, diagnoses, and triage codes. This study aims to contribute to the missing part of the literature and to improve emergency health services. Using these evaluations, pre-hospital health services can be assessed and required corrections can be implemented. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a retrospective registrational study. Complaints sent to the 112 head physician offices by petitions and to SABIM (Ministry of Health Communication Centre) and CIMER (Republic of Türkiye Presidency's Communication Centre) online regarding the late arrival of ambulances in Ankara Province between 1 January 2021 and 31 December 2023 were reviewed. The data analysis was conducted using IBM SPSS 27.0 (Armonk, NY, USA: IBM Corp.). RESULTS: The study included 161 complaints sent within three years. Of the complaints, 54.3% were made by males. The highest number of complaints was received in the summer months and the lowest number was in November. The highest number of complaints was made on Fridays. In 2022, the command reaction times were shorter than in the other years. Reaction and case arrival times in off-site cases were longer compared to those for in-site cases. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, significant data were obtained about the active and effective use of 112 emergency ambulance services. Schedules should be drawn up taking into consideration the weekends and times when the number of patients is greater. Strategic arrangements can be made to utilize resources by reviewing previous data and complaints about ambulance systems. Such evaluations can be important sources for improving emergency healthcare services. Conducting these assessments and tasks regularly will inform future improvements such as reduced case transport times, reduced command reaction times and better pre-hospital care. Objective: This study retrospectively evaluates Ankara Emergency Medical Services' (EMS) prehospital responses to firearm injuries concerning demographic characteristics, response times, and outcomes. Materials and Methods: Data were extracted from the Ankara EMS database (ASOS) encompassing firearm injury cases from January 1, 2019, to December 31, 2023, totaling 2,764 cases. Descriptive statistics were analyzed across years, focusing on EMS response times. Results: Of the 2,764 cases analyzed, 92.1% involved male patients and 7.9% female patients. Most incidents (71.2%) occurred on weekdays compared to weekends (28.8%). Soft tissue traumas accounted for 53.5% of cases, followed by interhospital transports (21.3%), medical cases (13.7%), and suicides (11.4%). Regarding outcomes, 65.6% of cases were transported to a hospital, 21.3% underwent interhospital transfers, and 11.4% were declared dead on arrival. The average call center response time was 324.6 seconds, ambulance team response time was 45.1 seconds, and time to scene arrival averaged 502.9 seconds. Conclusion: Ankara EMS demonstrated prompt and effective responses to firearm injuries, predominantly involving male patients. Most cases were directed to training and research hospitals, highlighting these institutions' pivotal role in EMS operations. Teacher roles and classroom discourses have great influence on classroom discussions within the context of socio-scientific issues. Investigation of teacher roles and classroom discourses is of great importance in the construction of the classroom environment in which students can support their views and the reasons underlying their views through scientific data in cases such as Covid-19 requiring decision-making at community level. The purpose of the current study is to investigate the roles adopted by science teachers in bringing the socio-scientific issue of Covid-19 vaccine into their classrooms and whether the communicative approach they employed and the teacher roles they adopted complied with the discourses they drew on in their classes. The study employed the case study design, one of the qualitative research methods and the study group was comprised of three science teachers and the students in their classes. As the data sources, video-recordings of the teachers' lessons and the vignettes related to the roles adopted by the teachers in addressing socio-scientific issues were used. The similarities and differences between the roles adopted by the teachers and the discourses used by them were examined and the communicative approach used by the teachers in their lessons was analyzed through discourse analysis. It was found that the reasons proposed by the three science teachers to explain why they adopted these roles complied with their discourses used in the classes. It was observed that the more experienced teachers offered more opportunities for their students to talk in their classes (used dialogical discourse) and that the roles adopted by all the teachers and the discourses used by them in their classes were consistent with each other. Students are required to speak scientifically and actively participate in science lessons. Cancer classification and gene selection are important applications in DNA microarray gene expression data analysis. Since DNA microarray data suffers from the high-dimensionality problem, automatic gene selection methods are used to enhance the classification performance of expert classifier systems. In this paper, a new penalized logistic regression method that performs simultaneous gene coefficient estimation and variable selection in DNA microarray data is discussed. The method employs prior information about the gene coefficients to improve the classification accuracy of the underlying model. The coordinate descent algorithm with screening rules is given to obtain the gene coefficient estimates of the proposed method efficiently. The performance of the method is examined on five high-dimensional cancer classification datasets using the area under the curve, the number of selected genes, misclassification rate and F-score measures. The real data analysis results indicate that the proposed method achieves a good cancer classification performance with a small misclassification rate, large area under the curve and F-score by trading off some sparsity level of the underlying model. Hence, the proposed method can be seen as a reliable penalized logistic regression method in the scope of high-dimensional cancer classification. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Variable selection approaches are often employed in high-dimensionality and multicollinearity problems. Since lasso selects variables by shrinking the coefficients, it has extensive use in many fields. On the other, we may sometime have extra information on the model. In this case, the extra information should be considered in the estimation procedure. In this paper, we propose a stochastic restricted lasso estimator in linear regression model which uses the extra information as stochastic linear restrictions. The estimator is a generalization of mixed estimator with L1 type penalization. We give the coordinate descent algorithm to estimate the coefficient vector of the proposed method and strong rules for the coordinate descent algorithm to discard variables from the model. Also, we propose a method to estimate the tuning parameter. We conduct two real data analyses and simulation studies to compare the new estimator with several estimators including the ridge, lasso and stochastic restricted ridge. The real data analyses and simulation studies show that the new estimator enjoys the automatic variable selection property of the lasso while outperforms standard methods, achieving lower test mean squared error. This study introduces a new distribution, a Lehmann-type exponentiated distribution, which is built upon the unit exponentiated half-logistic distribution. The analytical characteristics of the proposed distribution, like moments, moment-generating function, quantiles, and stress-strength reliability, are explored in detail. The renowned maximum likelihood estimation method is employed for the statistical inference of the distribution’s parameters. A computer experiment is run to explore the performance of the maximum likelihood estimates of the distribution parameters under diverse scenarios. Additionally, the practicality and efficacy of the distribution are illustrated through a numerical example using a real-world dataset. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of cooperative learning on the science lessons achievement of primary school students and to designate their views on cooperative learning process. 135 sixth-grade students attending the same school took part in the study. The model of this study was the Solomon four-group model. In the study, the Cooperative Learning Process Scale and the Science Achievement Test were used to collect data. In the light of the findings, the cooperative learning activities done in the experimental group have meaningfully increased the student achievement in comparison to the control group. According to the findings, it was determined that the activities were prepared appropriately to the cooperative learning and that they were organised considering the basic principles of cooperative learning. 85.07 per cent of the students have stated that the activities done were appropriate for high level cooperative learning.
