A citation analysis of the first 10 years of "Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta" from 1951 to 1960 is described. A shift from German to English language citations and the emerging importance of the journal in the field, which is undergoing a change resulting from technological innovation, are shown. Abstract: Magmatic systems below volcanoes are often dominated by partially crystalline magma over the long term. Rejuvenation of these systems during eruptive events can impact lava composition and eruption style—sometimes resulting in more violent or explosive activity than would be expected, as was the case at Fissure 17 during Kīlauea’s 2018 eruption. Here, we explore how the crystallinity of unerupted intrusion magmas affect hybrid magma compositions and petrological signatures by constructing phase-equilibria models to evaluate mineral and melt compositions of low-MgO lavas erupted along the East Rift Zone of Kīlauea volcano on 30 to 31 January 1997 (Episode 54, Fissures A-F). We then compare calculated mixing proportions and petrologically derived magma volumes to GPS-based geodetic inversions of ground deformation and intrusion growth in an attempt to reconcile geodetic and petrologically estimated magma volumes. Open-system phase-equilibria thermodynamic models were used to constrain the composition, degree of differentiation, and thermodynamic state of a rift-stored, two pyroxene + plagioclase saturated low-MgO magma body immediately preceding its mixing with high-MgO recharge and degassed drainback (lava lake) magma from Pu‘u‘ō‘ō‘, shortly before fissure activity within Nāpau Crater began on 29 January 1997. Mixing models constructed using the Magma Chamber Simulator reproduce the mineralogy and compositions of Episode 54 lavas within uncertainties and suggest that the identity of the low-MgO magma body may be either variably differentiated remnants of un-erupted magmas intruded into Nāpau Crater in October 1968, or another spatially and compositionally similar magma body. We find that magmas derived from a single, compositionally stratified magma emplaced beneath Nāpau Crater in 1968 can mix with mafic Kīlauea magmas to reproduce average Episode 54 bulk lava, mineralogy and mineral compositions without necessitating the interaction of multiple, low-MgO rift-stored magma bodies to produce Episode 54 lava compositions. Further, by constructing phase equilibria-based mixing models of Episode 54, we can better define the pre-eruptive state of the magmatic system. The resultant mineral assemblages and compositions are consistent with the possibility that the now-fractionated, rift-stored magma body was compositionally stratified and ~ 40% to 50% crystalline at the time of mixing. Finally, we estimate the volume of the low-MgO magma body to be ~7.51 Mm3. Phase-equilibria model results corroborate field and geochemical relationships demonstrating how shallow intrusions at intraplate shield volcanoes can crystallize, evolve, and then be remobilized by new, later batches of mafic magma. Most notably, our MCS models demonstrate that the pre-eruptive conditions of an intrusive body may be recovered by examining mineral compositions within mixed lavas. Discrepancies between the geodetic constraints on volumes of stored rift versus newly intruded (recharge) magma and our best-fit results produced by MCS mixing models (which respectively are mmafic:mlow-MgO ≈ 2 vs. mmafic:mlow-MgO ≈ 0.75) are interpreted to highlight the complex nature of incomplete mixing on more localized scales as reflected in erupted lavas, compared to geodetically constrained volumes that likely reflect large spatial scale contributions to a magmatic system. These dissimilar volume relationships may also help to constrain eruptive versus unerupted volumes in magmatic systems undergoing mixing. By demonstrating the usefulness of MCS in modeling past eruptions, we highlight the potential to use it as a tool to aid in petrologic monitoring of ongoing activity.

Access to synchrotron X-ray facilities has become an important aspect for many disciplines in experimental Earth science. This is especially important for studies that rely on probing samples in situ under natural conditions different from the ones found at the surface of the Earth. The non-ambient condition Earth science program at the Advanced Light Source (ALS), Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, offers a variety of tools utilizing the infra-red and hard X-ray spectrum that allow Earth scientists to probe Earth and environmental materials at variable conditions of pressure, stress, temperature, atmospheric composition, and humidity. These facilities are important tools for the user community in that they offer not only considerable capacity (non-ambient condition diffraction) but also complementary (IR spectroscopy, microtomography), and in some cases unique (Laue microdiffraction) instruments. The availability of the ALS’ in situ probes to the Earth science community grows especially critical during the ongoing dark time of the Advanced Photon Source in Chicago, which massively reduces available in situ synchrotron user time in North America.

Magma ascent and eruption are driven by a set of internally and externally generated stresses that act upon the magma. We present microstructural maps around melt inclusions in quartz crystals from six large rhyolitic eruptions using synchrotron Laue X-ray microdiffraction to quantify elastic residual strain and stress. We measure plastic strain using average diffraction peak width and lattice misorientation, highlighting dislocations and subgrain boundaries. Quartz crystals across studied magma systems preserve similar and relatively small magnitudes of elastic residual stress (mean 53–135 MPa, median 46–116 MPa) in comparison to the strength of quartz (~ 10 GPa). However, the distribution of strain in the lattice around inclusions varies between samples. We hypothesize that dislocation and twin systems may be established during compaction of crystal-rich magma, which affects the magnitude and distribution of preserved elastic strains. Given the lack of stress-free haloes around faceted inclusions, we conclude that most residual strain and stress was imparted after inclusion faceting. Fragmentation may be one of the final strain events that superimposes stresses of ~ 100 MPa across all studied crystals. Overall, volcanic quartz crystals preserve complex, overprinted deformation textures indicating that quartz crystals have prolonged deformation histories throughout storage, fragmentation, and eruption.

Radionuclide transport in smectite clay barrier systems used for nuclear waste disposal is controlled by diffusion, with adsorption significantly retarding transport rates. While a relatively minor component of spent nuclear fuel, 79Se is a major driver of the safety case for spent fuel disposal due to its long half-life (3.3 × 105 yr) and its low adsorption to clay (KD < 10 L/kg), thus a thorough understanding of Se diffusion through clay is critical for understanding the long-term safety of spent fuel disposal systems. Through-diffusion experiments with tritiated water (HTO, conservative tracer) and Se(VI) were conducted with a well-characterized, purified montmorillonite source clay (SWy-2) under a constant ionic strength (0.1 M) and three different electrolyte compositions: Na+, Ca2+, and a Na + -Ca2+ mixture at pH 6.5 in order to probe the effects of electrolyte composition and interlayer cation composition on clay microstructure, Se(VI) aqueous speciation, and ultimately diffusion. The results were modeled using a reactive transport modeling approach to determine values of porosity (ε), De (effective diffusion coefficient), and KD (distribution coefficient for adsorption). HTO diffusive flux was higher in Ca-montmorillonite (De = 1.68 × 10−10 m2 s−1) compared to Na-montmorillonite (De = 7.83 × 10−11 m2 s−1). This increase in flux is likely due to a greater degree of clay layer stacking in the presence of Ca2+ compared to Na+, which leads to larger inter-particle pores. Overall, the Se(VI) flux was much lower than the HTO flux due to anion exclusion, with Se(VI) flux following the order Ca (De = 1.03 × 10−11 m2 s−1) > Na–Ca (De = 2.12 × 10−12 m2 s−1) > Na (De = 1.28 × 10−12 m2 s−1). These differences in Se(VI) flux are due to a combination of factors, including (1) larger accessible porosity in Ca-montmorillonite due to clay layer stacking and smaller electrostatic effects compared to Na-montmorillonite, (2) larger accessible porosity for neutral-charge CaSeO4 species which makes up 32% of aqueous Se(VI) in the pure Ca system, and (3) possibly higher Se(VI) adsorption for Ca-montmorillonite. Through a combination of experimental and modeling work, this study highlights the compounding effects that electrolyte and counterion compositions can have on radionuclide transport through clay. Diffusion models that neglect these effects are not transferable from laboratory experimental conditions to in situ repository conditions.

The chemical and isotopic characteristics of a solidified pluton represent the integration of magmatic and sub-solidus processes operating across a range of spatial and temporal scales during pluton construction, crystallization, and cooling. Disentangling these processes and understanding where chemical and isotopic signatures were acquired requires the combination of multiple tools tracing processes at different time and length scales. We combine whole-rock oxygen and Sr-Nd isotopes, zircon oxygen isotopes and trace elements, and mineral compositions with published high-precision U-Pb zircon geochronology to evaluate differentiation within the bimodal Guadalupe Igneous Complex, Sierra Nevada, California (USA). The complex was constructed in ~300 k.y. between 149 and 150 Ma. Felsic magmas crystallized as centimeter- to meter-sized segregations in gabbros in the lower part of the complex and as granites and granophyres structurally above the gabbros. A central mingling zone separates the mafic and felsic units. Pluton-wide δ18O(whole-rock), δ18O(zircon), and Sr-Nd isotopic ranges are too large to be explained by in situ, closed-system differentiation, instead requiring open-system behavior at all scales. Low δ18O(whole-rock) and δ18O(zircon) values indicate assimilation of hydrothermally altered marine host rocks during ascent and/or emplacement. In situ differentiation processes operated on a smaller scale (meters to tens of meters) for at least ~200 k.y. via (1) percolation and segregation of chemically and isotopically diverse silicic interstitial melt from a heterogeneous gabbro mush; (2) crystal accumulation; and (3) sub-solidus, high-temperature, hydrothermal alteration at the shallow roof of the complex to modify the chemical and isotopic characteristics. Whole-rock and mineral chemistry in combination with geochronology allows deciphering open-system differentiation processes at the outcrop to pluton scale from magmatic to sub-solidus temperatures over time scales of hundreds of thousands to millions of years.

The past decades have witnessed the increased applications of induced polarization (IP) method in the critical zone studies with ubiquitous clay minerals. Although IP outperforms traditional electrical and electromagnetic methods through its unique ability to measure quadrature conductivity, the nonlinearity that quadrature conductivity behaves with salinities and frequencies greatly tortures IP practitioners, as (a) salinity-dependency makes the quadrature conductivity a varyingly unstable parameter to quantitatively estimate hydraulic properties and clay content; (b) frequency-dependent Cole-Cole and Debye/Warburg decomposition models, although mathematically sound, physically mingle the properties of pore water and clay minerals and are empirical in nature. From basic principles, we demonstrate that quadrature conductivity remains a hybrid property involving both clay and water, and develop relevant models to distinguish them. Our models are validated by theories, experiments, simulations, and comparisons, all of which proclaim considerable advantages over previous models and offer the prospect of quantitative applications.

Abstract: The crystal structure and bonding environment of K2Ca(CO3)2 bütschliite were probed under isothermal compression via Raman spectroscopy to 95 GPa and single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction to 12 and 68 GPa, respectively. A second order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state fit to the X-ray data yields a bulk modulus, $${K}_{0}=46.9$$ K 0 = 46.9 GPa with an imposed value of $${K}_{0}^{\prime}= 4$$ K 0 ′ = 4 for the ambient pressure phase. Compression of bütschliite is highly anisotropic, with contraction along the c-axis accounting for most of the volume change. Bütschliite undergoes a phase transition to a monoclinic C2/m structure at around 6 GPa, mirroring polymorphism within isostructural borates. A fit to the compression data of the monoclinic phase yields $${V}_{0}=322.2$$ V 0 = 322.2  Å3$$,$$ , $${K}_{0}=24.8$$ K 0 = 24.8 GPa and $${K}_{0}^{\prime}=4.0$$ K 0 ′ = 4.0 using a third order fit; the ability to access different compression mechanisms gives rise to a more compressible material than the low-pressure phase. In particular, compression of the C2/m phase involves interlayer displacement and twisting of the [CO3] units, and an increase in coordination number of the K+ ion. Three more phase transitions, at ~ 28, 34, and 37 GPa occur based on the Raman spectra and powder diffraction data: these give rise to new [CO3] bonding environments within the structure.

Sedimentary basins provide a deep time archive of tectonic and Earth-surface processes that can be leveraged by detrital mineral U-Pb dating and geochemistry to track paleogeography, magmatism, and crustal evolution. Zircon preserves the long-term (billions of years) record of supercontinent cycles; however, it is biased toward preserving felsic crustal records. Detrital rutile complements the detrital zircon record by providing constraints on the time and temperature of rifting and mafic magmatism, metamorphism, exhumation of the middle and lower crust, subduction, and amagmatic orogenesis. We use detrital zircon U-Pb and detrital rutile U-Pb geochronology and trace element analysis of Permian to Eocene siliciclastic rocks in the southern Pyrenees to capture supercontinent cycles of ocean basins opening and closing. Detrital rutile age spectra show peaks at ca. 100 Ma associated with rifting and hyperextension in the Pyrenean realm, 200 Ma associated with the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province, and 330 Ma, 375 Ma, and 400 Ma associated with subduction and Rheic Ocean crust formation. Zr-in-rutile thermometry and rutile Cr-Nb systematics provide further insight into metamorphic facies (peak metamorphic temperatures) and source rock lithology (mafic versus felsic affinity). Detrital zircon age spectra have peaks at ca. 300 Ma, 450 Ma, and 600 Ma associated with major orogenic events and felsic magmatism, and Th/U ratios provide information on relative zircon formation temperatures. Comparison of these independent records shows that detrital rutile reflects rifting, magma-poor orogenesis, and oceanic lithospheric processes, while detrital zircon detects continental lithospheric processes. Integrated detrital zircon and rutile data sets archive past geological events across multiple Wilson cycles.

The paleogeography of Laurentia throughout the Neoproterozoic is critical for reconstructing global paleogeography due to its central position in the supercontinent Rodinia. We develop a new paleomagnetic pole from red siltstones and fine-grained sandstones of the early Neoproterozoic Jacobsville Formation which is now constrained to be ca. 990 Ma in age. High-resolution thermal demagnetization experiments resolve detrital remanent magnetizations held by hematite. These directions were reoriented within siltstone intraclasts and pass intraformational conglomerate tests—giving confidence that the magnetization is detrital and primary. An inclination-corrected mean paleomagnetic pole position for the Jacobsville Formation indicates that Laurentia's motion slowed down significantly following the onset of the Grenvillian orogeny. Prior rapid plate motion associated with closure of the Unimos Ocean between 1,110 and 1,090 Ma transitioned to slow drift of Laurentia across the equator in the late Mesoproterozoic to early Neoproterozoic. We interpret the distinct position of this well-dated pole from those in the Grenville orogen that have been assigned a similar age to indicate that the ages of the poles associated with the Grenville Loop likely need to be revised to be younger due to prolonged exhumation.

Miocene strata of the Claremont, Orinda, and Moraga formations of the Berkeley Hills (California Coast Ranges, USA) record sedimentation and volcanism during the passage of the Mendocino triple junction and early evolution of the San Andreas fault system. Detrital zircon laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) age spectra indicate a change in sedimentary prove nance between the marine Claremont formation (Monterey Group) and the terrestrial Orinda and Moraga Formations associated with uplift of Franciscan Complex lithologies. A sandstone from the Claremont formation produced a detrital zircon chemical abrasion–isotope dilution–thermal ionization mass spec trometry (CA-ID-TIMS) maximum depositional age of 13.298 ± 0.046 Ma, indicating younger Claremont deposition than previously interpreted. A trachydacite tuff clast within the uppermost Orinda Formation yielded a CA-ID-TIMS U-Pb zircon date of 10.094 ± 0.018 Ma, and a dacitic tuff within the Moraga Formation produced a CA-ID-TIMS U-Pb zircon date of 9.974 ± 0.014 Ma. These results indicate rapid progression from subsidence in which deep-water siliceous sediments of the Claremont formation were deposited to uplift that was followed by subsidence during deposition of terrestrial sediments of the Orinda Forma tion and subsequent eruption of the Moraga Formation volcanics. We associate the Orinda tuff clast and Moraga volcanics with slab-gap volcanism that followed the passage of the Mendocino triple junction. Given the necessary time lag between triple junction passage and the removal of the slab that led to this volcanism, subsidence associated with ca. 13 Ma Claremont sedimentation and subsequent Orinda to Moraga deposition can be attributed to basin formation along the newly arrived transform boundary.

The Snake River Plain (SRP) volcanic province overlies the track of the Yellowstone hotspot, a thermal anomaly that extends deep into the mantle. Most of the area is underlain by a basaltic volcanic province that overlies a mid-crustal intrusive complex, which in turn provides the long-term heat flux needed to sustain geothermal systems. Previous studies have identified several known geothermal resource areas within the SRP. For the geothermal study presented herein, our goals were to: (1) adapt the methodology of Play Fairway Analysis (PFA) for geothermal exploration to create a formal basis for its application to geothermal systems, (2) assemble relevant data for the SRP from publicly available and private sources, and (3) build a geothermal PFA model for the SRP and identify the most promising plays, using GIS-based software tools that are standard in the petroleum industry. The study focused on identifying three critical resource parameters for exploitable hydrothermal systems in the SRP: heat source, reservoir and recharge permeability, and cap or seal. Data included in the compilation for heat source were heat flow, distribution and ages of volcanic vents, groundwater temperatures, thermal springs and wells, helium isotope anomalies, and reservoir temperatures estimated using geothermometry. Reservoir and recharge permeability was inferred from the analysis of stress orientations and magnitudes, post-Miocene faults, and subsurface structural lineaments based on magnetics and gravity data. Data for cap or seal included the distribution of impermeable lake sediments and clay-seal associated with hydrothermal alteration below the regional aquifer. These data were used to compile Common Risk Segment maps for heat, permeability, and seal, which were combined to create a Composite Common Risk Segment map for all southern Idaho that reflects the risk associated with geothermal resource exploration and identifies favorable resource tracks. Our regional assessment indicated that undiscovered geothermal resources may be located in several areas of the SRP. Two of these areas, the western SRP and Camas Prairie, were selected for more detailed assessment, during which heat, permeability, and seal were evaluated using newly collected field data and smaller grid parameters to refine the location of potential resources. These higher resolution assessments illustrate the flexibility of our approach over a range of scales.

Cave carbonate minerals are an important terrestrial paleoclimate archive. A few studies have explored the potential for applying carbonate clumped isotope thermometry to speleothems as a tool for constraining past temperatures. To date, most papers utilizing this method have focused on mass-47 clumped isotope values (Δ47) at a single location and reported that cave carbonate minerals rarely achieve isotopic equilibrium, with kinetic isotope effects (KIEs) attributed to CO2 degassing. More recently, studies have shown that mass-47 and mass-48 CO2 from acid digested carbonate minerals (Δ47 and Δ48) can be used together to assess equilibrium and probe KIEs. Here, we examined 44 natural and synthetic modern cave carbonate mineral samples from 13 localities with varying environmental conditions (ventilation, water level, pCO2, temperature) for (dis)equilibrium using Δ47-Δ48 values, in concert with traditional stable carbon (δ13C) and oxygen (δ18O) isotope ratios. Data showed that 19 of 44 samples exhibited Δ47-Δ48 values indistinguishable from isotopic equilibrium, and 18 (95 %) of these samples yield Δ47-predicted temperatures within error of measured modern temperatures. Conversely, 25 samples exhibited isotopic disequilibria, 13 of which yield erroneous temperature estimates. Within some speleothem samples, we find Δ47-Δ48 values consistent with CO2 degassing effects, however, the majority of samples with KIEs are consistent with other processes being dominant. We hypothesize that these values reflect isotopic buffering effects on clumped isotopes that can be considerable and cannot be overlooked. Using a Raleigh Distillation Model, we examined carbon and oxygen isotope exchange trajectories and their relationships with dual clumped isotope disequilibria. Carbon isotope exchange is associated with depletion of both Δ47 and Δ48 relative to equilibrium, while oxygen isotope exchange is associated with enrichment of both Δ47 and Δ48 relative to equilibrium. Cave rafts collected from proximate locations in Mexico exhibit the largest average departures from equilibrium (ΔΔ47¯ = −0.032 ± 0.007, ΔΔ48¯ = −0.104 ± 0.035, where ΔΔi is the measured value – the equilibrium value). This study shows how the Δ47-Δ48 dual carbonate clumped isotope framework can be applied to a variety of tcave carbonate mineral samples, enabling identification of isotopic equilibria and therefore quantitative application of clumped isotope thermometry for paleoclimate reconstruction, or alternatively, constraining the mechanisms of kinetic effects.

Abstract: Foraminifera are unicellular organisms that inhabit the oceans. They play an important role in the global carbon cycle and record valuable paleoclimate information through the uptake of trace elements such as strontium into their calcitic shells. Understanding how foraminifera control their internal fluid composition to make calcite is important for predicting their response to ocean acidification and for reliably interpreting the chemical and isotopic compositions of their shells. Here, we model foraminiferal calcification and strontium partitioning in the benthic foraminifera Cibicides wuellerstorfi and Cibicidoides mundulus based on insights from inorganic calcite experiments. The numerical model reconciles inter-ocean and taxonomic differences in benthic foraminifer strontium partitioning relationships and enables us to reconstruct the composition of the calcifying fluid. We find that strontium partitioning and mineral growth rates of foraminiferal calcite are not strongly affected by changes in external seawater pH (within 7.8–8.1) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC, within 2100–2300 μmol/kg) due to a regulated calcite saturation state at the site of shell formation.

Drier and hotter conditions linked with anthropogenic climate change can increase wildfire frequency and severity, influencing terrestrial and aquatic carbon cycles at broad spatial and temporal scales. The impacts of wildfire are complex and dependent on several factors that may increase terrestrial deposition and the influx of dissolved organic matter (DOM) from plants into nearby aquatic systems, resulting in the darkening of water color. We tested the effects of plant biomass quantity and its interaction with fire (burned vs. unburned plant biomass) on dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration and degradation (biological vs. photochemical) and DOM composition in 400 L freshwater ponds using a gradient experimental design. DOC concentration increased nonlinearly with plant biomass loading in both treatments, with overall higher concentrations (>56 mg/L) in the unburned treatment shortly after plant addition. We also observed nonlinear trends in fluorescence and UV-visible absorbance spectroscopic indices as a function of fire treatment and plant biomass, such as greater humification and specific UV absorbance at 254 nm (a proxy for aromatic DOM) over time. DOM humification occurred gradually over time with less humification in the burned treatment compared to the unburned treatment. Both burned and unburned biomass released noncolored, low molecular weight carbon compounds that were rapidly consumed by microbes. DOC decomposition exhibited a unimodal relationship with plant biomass, with microbes contributing more to DOC loss than photodegradation at intermediate biomass levels (100-300 g). Our findings demonstrate that the quantity of plant biomass leads to nonlinear responses in the dynamics and composition of DOM in experimental ponds that are altered by fire, indicating how disturbances interactively affect DOM processing and its role in aquatic environments.

Global trends of ocean warming, deoxygenation, and acidification are not easily extrapolated to coastal environments. Local factors, including intricate hydrodynamics, high primary productivity, freshwater inputs, and pollution, can exacerbate or attenuate global trends and produce complex mosaics of physiologically stressful or favorable conditions for organisms. In the California Current System (CCS), coastal oceanographic monitoring programs document some of this complexity; however, data fragmentation and limited data availability constrain our understanding of when and where intersecting stressful temperatures, carbonate system conditions, and reduced oxygen availability manifest. Here, we undertake a large data synthesis to compile, format, and quality-control publicly available oceanographic data from the US West Coast to create an accessible database for coastal CCS climate risk mapping, available from the National Centers for Environmental Information (accession 0277984) at 10.25921/2vve-fh39 (Kennedy et al., 2023). With this synthesis, we combine publicly available observations and data contributed by the author team from synoptic oceanographic cruises, autonomous sensors, and shore samples with relevance to coastal ocean acidification and hypoxia (OAH) risk. This large-scale compilation includes 13.7 million observations from 66 sources and spans 1949 to 2020. Here, we discuss the quality and composition of the synthesized dataset, the spatial and temporal distribution of available data, and examples of potential analyses. This dataset will provide a valuable tool for scientists supporting policy- and management-relevant investigations including assessing regional and local climate risk, evaluating the efficacy and completeness of CCS monitoring efforts, and elucidating spatiotemporal scales of coastal oceanographic variability.

Right-lateral transform motion associated with the Pacific-North American plate boundary in the modern-day San Francisco Bay Area occurs across a series of sub-parallel fault zones. Much of this motion is accommodated east of the San Andreas Fault by the faults of the East Bay fault system. A major tool for reconstructing the spatial and temporal history of fault motion is the correlation of offset Neogene volcanic rocks. These Neogene volcanics within the California Coast Ranges formed in association with the slab gap that grew as the Mendocino Triple Junction migrated northward. Some of the volcanic centres have been variably offset by subsequent strike-slip faulting. A felsic volcanic unit exposed in Berkeley, CA, known as the Northbrae rhyolite has variably been interpreted to be one of these Neogene volcanic units or to be a Mesozoic volcanic unit associated with the Coast Range ophiolite. A new U-Pb zircon date of 11.10 (Formula presented.) 0.09 Ma confirms the Neogene volcanic interpretation. This date is indistinguishable from previously published Ar/Ar dates from the Burdell Mountain volcanics of the North Bay region as well as a new U-Pb zircon date of 11.07 (Formula presented.) 0.10 Ma. In addition to the indistinguishable ages, similarities in bulk lithology, zircon crystallization/dissolution textures, and zircon trace element geochemistry are consistent with these rhyolites being associated with the same volcanic centre. This correlation implies that 40 (Formula presented.) 5 km of right-lateral offset occurred to the west of the modern-day position of the Hayward-Rodgers Creek fault zone. This offset represents (Formula presented.) 20% of the total offset along the East Bay fault system. A proto-Hayward Fault with a different geometry than that of the present-day played a significant role in the evolution of the fault system. This result highlights the dynamic spatiotemporal variability of strike-slip faults along transform margins.

The long-standing assumption that aboveground plant litter inputs have a substantial influence on soil organic carbon storage (SOC) and dynamics has been challenged by a new paradigm for SOC formation and persistence. We tested the importance of plant litter chemistry on SOC storage, distribution, composition, and age by comparing two highly contrasting ecosystems: an old-growth coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) forest, with highly aromatic litter, and an adjacent coastal prairie, with more easily decomposed litter. We hypothesized that if plant litter chemistry was the primary driver, redwood would store more and older SOC that was less microbially processed than prairie. Total soil carbon stocks to 110 cm depth were higher in prairie (35 kg C m-2) than redwood (28 kg C m-2). Radiocarbon values indicated shorter SOC residence times in redwood than prairie throughout the profile. Higher amounts of pyrogenic carbon and a higher degree of microbial processing of SOC appear to be instrumental for soil carbon storage and persistence in prairie, while differences in fine-root carbon inputs likely contribute to younger SOC in redwood. We conclude that at these sites fire residues, root inputs, and soil properties influence soil carbon dynamics to a greater degree than the properties of aboveground litter.

ImportanceThe ability to detect extracellular environmental conditions is a fundamental property of all life forms. Because microbial two-component sensor systems convert information about extracellular conditions into biochemical information that controls their behaviors, we evaluated how two-component sensor systems evolved within the deep Earth across multiple sites where abiotic and biotic properties vary. We show that these sensor systems remain abundant in microbial consortia at all subterranean sampling sites and observe correlations between sensor system abundances and abiotic (dissolved organic carbon variation) and biotic (consortia diversity) properties. These results suggest that multiple environmental properties may drive sensor protein evolution and highlight the need for further studies of metagenomic and geochemical data in parallel to understand the drivers of microbial sensor evolution.

Abstract: The Cross-Hosgri slope is a bathymetric lineament that crosses the main strand of the Hosgri fault offshore Point Estero, central California. Recently collected chirp seismic reflection profiles and sediment cores provide the basis for a reassessment of Cross-Hosgri slope origin and the lateral slip rate of the Hosgri fault based on offset of the lower slope break of the Cross-Hosgri slope. The Cross-Hosgri slope is comprised of two distinct stratigraphic units. The lower unit (unit 1) overlies the post–Last Glacial Maximum transgressive erosion surface and is interpreted as a Younger Dryas (ca. 12.85–11.65 ka) shoreface deposit based on radiocarbon and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) ages, Bayesian age modeling, seismic facies, sediment texture, sediment infauna, and heavy mineral component. The shoreface was abandoned and partly eroded during rapid sea-level rise from ca. 11.5 to 7 ka. Unit 2 consists of fine sand and silt deposited in a midshelf environment when the rate of sea-level rise slowed between ca. 7 ka and the present. Although unit 2 provides a thin, relatively uniform cover over the lower slope break of the older shoreface, this feature still represents a valuable piercing point, providing a Hosgri fault slip rate of 2.6 ± 0.8 mm/yr. Full-waveform processing of chirp data resulted in significantly higher resolution in coarser-grained strata, which are typically difficult to interpret with more traditional envelope processing. Our novel combination of offshore radiocarbon and OSL dating is the first application to offshore paleoseismic studies, and our results indicate the utility of this approach for future marine neotectonic investigations.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the metal geochemistry and contamination assessment of the metals such as Fe, Co, Cd, Pb, Ni, Zn, Mg, Ca, and Sr from the surface sediment samples collected from seven stations from a tropical mangrove area in the Southwest coast of India. Metals like Ni and Fe were found in higher concentrations but never exceeded the contamination level in all the seasons whereas Cd was highly contaminated in all the seasons as well as stations. Pollution levels were measured using the indices including contamination Factor (CF), potential ecological risk coefficient (Eir), Enrichment Factor (EF), geoaccumulation index (Igeo), Pollution load index (PLI), Contamination degree (Cdegree), modified contamination degree (mCd) and Hazard Quotient (HQ). However, the level of contamination highlighted Cd has the maximum risk factors from the selected study area. All stations are contaminated by anthropogenic inputs. The pollution load index (PLI) revealed Pazhayangady, Valapattanam, Dharmadom (stations 1,2 and 3), Kumbalam (station5) and Munroe Thuruth (station 7) showed the presence of polluted sediments (PLI> 1). Our current knowledge regarding the distribution patterns of ancient and recent recycled materials, as well as the origin of intraplate basalts in the eastern Asia Big Mantle Wedge (BMW), is limited. To address this, we conducted a detailed geochemical analysis of olivine melt inclusions (OLMI) in nephelinite samples. The normal OLMIs detected in our investigation exhibit geochemical features that closely resemble those of the hosting nephelinite, indicating a consistent association with a carbonated mantle source. Additionally, we identified a distinct group of anomalous OLMIs that displayed different geochemical characteristics from the hosting nephelinite but showed similarities to regional alkali basalts sourced from pyroxenite. The observed geochemical diversity in the nephelinite OLMIs suggests an interaction between deeply derived carbonated melts originating from the flattened Pacific slab in the mantle transition zone and pyroxenite in the lithospheric mantle. Carbonated fluid‐fluxed melting is key to basalt formation in the BMW. In order to better understand the distribution patterns of recycled materials and the origin of intraplate basalts within the Eastern Asia BMW, we have focused on studying the Cenozoic basalts from the eastern North China region. Initially, it was believed that these basalts were formed through decompression melting of the mantle caused by back‐arc extension associated with the subduction of the Pacific plate. However, recent studies have revealed unique characteristics of these basalts, such as high water content and isotopic values that differ from those of the depleted mantle. This suggests a possible connection between the basalts and decarbonation and dehydration processes occurring within the stagnant subducted slab in the MTZ. According to the proposed model, carbonated melts/fluids released from the stagnant slab interacted with the lithospheric mantle, resulting in the transformation of the melts and the involvement of pyroxenite in the lithospheric mantle. The pyroxenite forms through ancient melt metasomatism events. This interaction ultimately leads to the generation of basalts with a wide range of SiO2 content. With the advent of new terminologies to categorize and characterize the simple and complex monogenetic volcanoes, also came the semantic issues, which caused a predicament for the usage of terms like simple, complex, polycyclic, polymagmatic, complex monogenetic volcanoes with polygenetic inheritance. To analyse and validate this nomenclature, we studied an overlapping volcanic structure located south of the present‐day town of Irapuato, Central Mexico, that appears to be a monogenetic complex at first sight. Field observations, tephra stratigraphy, petrography and geochemistry of the tephra deposits confirms that the structure is in fact a cluster of three simple (San Joaquin tuff ring and two scoria mounds) and one complex, polycyclic, polymagmatic (La Sanabria‐San Roque tuff ring) monogenetic volcanoes formed by independent events, governed by distinct conduits and magma bodies of different origin (subduction‐related, OIB and E‐MORB origin) and separated by different tephra sequences of dissimilar components and depositional characteristics. We estimate the magma volumes (using the juvenile content and their vesicularity percentage) to be at 0.40–1.31 × 108, 0.25 × 108 and 0.42–0.90 × 108 m3 for San Joaquin, La Sanabria and San Roque, reckoning an eruption duration of 77 and 48 and 81 days, respectively (considering an average eruption rate of 6 m3/s from the well‐documented shallow crater (<30 m), Ukinrek maars in Alaska) occurring within the age range of 40–70 k years (crater diameter and depth ratio). This study not only aided to validate the above‐mentioned terms for monogenetic volcanoes, but also reconsider a few of them and avoid confusion with the polygenetic counterparts. The Cadomian basement of SW Iberian Massif appears in the so-called Ossa-Morena Complex, which contains several allochthonous terranes that are key for deciphering the evolution of the Gondwana margin during the Neoproterozoic. In this context, the Calzadilla Ophiolite represents the remnants of an oceanic Ediacaran lithosphere formed by a boninitic mafic crust that overlies a serpentinized ultramafic section, the latter being the biggest outcrop of Cadomian serpentinites in Europe. In this work, the petrological and geochemical nature of the mantle section is analysed, as well as the tectonothermal evolution of both, the mafic crust and the ultramafic section. The algebraic analysis of whole rock geochemistry of the serpentinites indicates that the protolith corresponds to harzburgite. The geochemical fingerprint of the serpentinites, as well as the primary spinel crystals composition, shows that peridotites underwent high degrees of partial melting (up to 16%) in a forearc setting. Thermodynamic modelling and average PT methods were applied to serpentinites and mafic dykes from the ultramafic section as well as to amphibolites from the mafic section, both of which experienced progradation up to 4–5 kbar and 525–575°C. According to the data, the protoliths of the Calzadilla Ophiolite were formed in a peri-Gondwanan arc system developed during the subduction of oceanic crust below Gondwana. The roll-back of the subducting slab would induce the opening of the forearc basin at c. 602 Ma, protolith age of amphibolites from crustal section, with an extensive partial melting of the mantle wedge and the formation of boninitic-affinity magmas that constitute the mafic section of the Calzadilla Ophiolite. Metasomatism and serpentinization of the mantle wedge would occur via melt- and fluid–rock interactions. A compression-dominated stage at c. 540 led to the emplacement of the Calzadilla Ophiolite onto the Cadomian magmatic arc, with the development of the amphibolite-facies metamorphic imprint. The Rare Earth Element (REE) geochemistry of siliciclastic sediment in the Ilaje area, eastern Dahomey basin, southwestern Nigeria was conducted to determine the provenance, geotectonic setting as well the REE economic potential in the sediments. Geochemical analysis results (ppm) revealed the concentration of La varies from 1.87–21.47 while Ce ranges from 1.16–45.98. Others include; Pr (1.07–39.56), Nd (0.71–26.02), Sm (0.42–12.51), Eu (0.20–4.66), Gd (0.27–8.79), Tb (0.29–3.97), Dy (0.28–3.62), Ho (0.22–2.76), Er (0.29–2.64), Tm (0.33–3.83), Yb (0.37–3.75) and Lu (0.29–3.03) respectively while the ∑REE ranges from 2.25 to 6686.75 ppm. The REE normalization plot is characterized by an inclined shape depletion indicating depletion trend. The patterns show an enriched Light Rare Earth Elements (LREE) and Heavy Rare Earth Element (HREE) pattern indicating upper continental crust sourced materials. The plot also revealed a negative Eu anomaly which may be associated with plagioclase fractionation in the acidic source rocks. The potential threat of fisheries on seabed carbon is a topic of growing concern, yet existing literature presents inconsistencies leaving experts divided on the topic. We conducted a global meta‐analysis to synthesize the current knowledge and quantify how demersal fishing impacts various biogeochemical properties. Direct impact studies revealed overall reductions in chlorophyll‐a (Chl‐a, 17%), phaeopigments (24%), and proteins (32%). Effects on these reactive compounds were more pronounced on surface sediment (0–2 cm), where the impact on total organic carbon (TOC) also became significant, demonstrating the effect of gear penetration, and highlighting that sampling strategies combining sediment layers can mask observed effects. Current velocity and primary productivity significantly influenced the direction and magnitude of fishing impacts. Trawling‐induced subsurface reductions of TOC in low‐energy habitats may affect carbon sequestration due to the preferential removal of semi‐reactive carbon. Intriguingly, fishing intensity gradient studies showed an average increase in TOC in chronically fished areas, possibly reflecting fishing preferences for meso‐eutrophic grounds. We estimate a ~300‐day recovery period post‐fishing for Chl‐a, though values for other parameters are less certain. Limited data on seasonality, gear types, and an under‐representation of studies in tropical and deep‐sea areas pose challenges to quantifying global scale geochemical impacts of demersal fisheries. Knowledge gaps persist in understanding the fate of disturbed organic matter including its mineralization, transport, and sequestration. Nonetheless, our insights and estimates provide foundational knowledge that can contribute to science‐based approaches for spatial fisheries management while preserving natural carbon dynamics on the seabed. The granitic rocks in the Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, southern Thailand, SE Asia Tin Belt, comprise gneissic biotite monzogranite, porphyritic muscovite–biotite monzogranite, and porphyritic biotite monzogranite. Comprehensive field observations, petrography, mineral chemistry, and geochemistry establish gneissic biotite monzogranites as part of the Central Belt Granites (CBGs), while porphyritic muscovite–biotite monzogranite and porphyritic biotite monzogranite as part of the Western Belt Granites (WBGs). CBG and WBG granitic units exhibit peraluminous, alkali-calcic, and magnesian magmatic series traits, reflecting an S-type granite character resulting from crustal partial melting. Significantly, scatter correlations in variation diagrams, combined with the enrichment of Cs, Rb, Th, U, Pb, Nd, and P, and the depletion of Ba, Nb, and Ti contents, point towards an S-type granite signature formed during collisional events. Crystallization conditions reveal CBG gneissic biotite monzogranite encountered P–T conditions of 2.97–3.85 kbar/680°C–733°C/11.1–14.4 km, while WBG’s porphyritic muscovite–biotite monzogranite and porphyritic biotite monzogranite experienced 2.73–4.15 kbar/628°C–732°C/10.2–15.5 km and 2.47–3.80 kbar/651°C–728°C/9.2–14.2 km, respectively. Geochronological data indicate that CBG’s gneissic biotite monzogranite was emplaced from Early Cretaceous collision (128–119 Ma) of Indochina and Sibumasu terranes, while WBG’s porphyritic muscovite–biotite monzogranite and porphyritic biotite monzogranite were formed during the syn-collision of Sibumasu and West Burma terranes during Early Cretaceous (121–111 Ma) to Paleocene. The Nagaland-Manipur ophiolites (NMO), part of the Phanerozoic (538.8–0 Ma) Tethyan ophiolites, occur in the NNE-SSW trending Indo-Myanmar Orogenic Belt (IMOB), northeast India. The NMO hosts both high-Al (0.46 < Cr# < 0.53) and high-Cr chromitites (0.71 < Cr# < 0.79). These chromitite bodies are hosted in lherzolite, harzburgite, and dunite and show various textures, including massive, disseminated, nodular, and granular. The high-Al chromitite compositions in conjunction with the calculated Al2O3[melt] (15.66–16.39 wt.%), TiO2[melt] (0.65–0.94 wt.%), and FeO/MgO[melt] (0.65–0.83 wt.%) values indicate that they were derived from the tholeiitic melt that formed at the mid-ocean ridge centre through low-degree partial melting. In contrast, the high-Cr chromitites, coupled with the Al2O3[melt] (11.24–12.99 wt.%), TiO2[melt] (0.21–0.33 wt.%), and FeO/MgO[melt] (0.58–1.54) values show similar geochemical affinities to those derived from boninitic melts produced by partial melting of already depleted mantle due to the subduction of oceanic plate in a supra-subduction zone environment. The total platinum group element (PGE) contents (60–190 ppb) of high-Al chromitites are lower than the total PGE contents (118–2341 ppb) in high-Cr chromitites. Chondrite-normalized PGE patterns in high-Al chromitites are flat from Os to Rh and negatively sloping from Rh to Pd, whereas high-Cr chromitites show strongly fractionated chondrite-normalized PGE patterns. Total PGE contents and low Pd/Ir ratios (0.02–0.64) of chromitites are consistent with typical ophiolitic chromitites. Mineral chemistry and PGE systematics suggest that NMO chromitites were generated in two separate tectonic settings. Thus, we argue that the upper mantle of the NMO of the IMOB has been modified by a substantial amount of supra-subduction zone components after initially being formed in a mid-ocean ridge tectonic environment. The Salina Cruz and Puerto Ángel beach areas in the Gulf of Tehuantepec, Mexican Pacific coast represent an important economic sector of the region. In this study, the mineralogy and geochemistry of bulk sediments, and geochronology of 400 detrital zircons recovered from the beach sediments were analysed to investigate their origin. The sediments are abundant in quartz, feldspar, ilmenite, cordierite, aragonite and anorthite. The chemical index of weathering revealed a moderate to intense weathering in the source area. The chondrite normalized REE patterns of bulk sediments are similar to the found in the Upper Continental Crust, suggesting the derivation of sediments from felsic igneous rocks. The REE patterns of zircons and the trace elemental ratios reveal a continental crust origin. Zircon U–Pb ages in the Salina Cruz beach were represented by Proterozoic (~545.1–1314.1 Ma; n = 170) and Cenozoic (~0.01–66 Ma; n = 20). The Puerto Ángel beach was abundant in Proterozoic zircon grains (~600.9–1171.4 Ma; n = 109) and followed by Mesozoic grains (~73.78–246.9 Ma; n = 40). The comparison of zircon U–Pb ages of this study with probable source rocks reveals that the Oaxaquia Terrane and Chiapas Massif Complex were the major contributors of Proterozoic zircons to the coastal areas. Similarly, the results indicate that the Cenozoic zircons were contributed by the Chiapas Massif Complex, coastal batholith and Cuicateco Terrane. The analysis of the ASTC1 sediment core from the south Aegean Sea region offers critical insights into the complex interplay of geological and climatic factors over the Holocene period. The data reveals fluctuating climatic conditions during the last 8.7 ka as seen through the elemental concentrations obtained by XRF core scanning combined with a qualitative mineral analysis within a robust chronological framework. Short-term fluctuations in both Ti/Al and Zr/Si ratios suggest brief oscillations of increased aridity which partially coincide with the Holocene "Rapid Climate Change" events (RCCs). Among them, the most pronounced in our record are those centered between 8.5–8 ka, 3–2.5 ka (Greek Dark Ages), and 0.6–0.3 ka (Little Ice Age). The arid and humid events identified in the sediment record align with major archaeological periods in Greece, suggesting a potential influence of climatic conditions on the development and decline of civilizations in the region. Moreover, a general arid trend as of 6 ka toward the present was evidenced in our record and aligns with other high-resolution climatic data from the Northern Hemisphere, suggesting climatic teleconnections. Spectral analysis of the ASTC1 record reveals cyclical climate patterns with periodicities of approximately 2500, 1200, and 550 years, which coincide with the Bond and Hallstatt cycles. The phase relation of these cycles in our record, the Greenland ice record, and the North Atlantic Drift ice indices show that colder conditions in the higher latitudes are expressed as events of enhanced aridity in our record and generally in the lower latitudinal regions. Bulk geochemistry, Sr, Nd, and O–H isotope systematics are reported for the first time on banded iron formation (BIF)-hosted high-grade iron ore at the north-western segment of Congo Craton (CC). Located in Mbalam iron ore district, Southern Cameroon, Metzimevin iron ore deposit is a hematite-magnetite BIF system, dominated by SiO2 + Fe2O3 (97.1 to 99.84 wt%), with low concentrations of clastic elements e.g., Al2O3, TiO2, and HFSE, depicting a nearly pure chemical precipitate. The REE + Y signature of the iron deposit displays strong positive Eu anomaly, strong negative Ce anomaly, and chondritic to superchondritic Y/Ho ratios, suggestive of formation by mixed seawater-high temperature hydrothermal fluids in oxidising environment. The 87Sr/86Sr ratios of the BIF are higher than the maximum 87Sr/86Sr evolution curves for all Archean reservoirs (bulk silicate earth, Archean crust and Archean seawater), indicating involvement of continentally-derived components during BIF formation and alteration. The ƐNd(t) (+ 2.26 to + 3.77) and Nd model age indicate that chemical constituents for the BIF were derived from undifferentiated crustal source, between 3.002 and 2.88 Ga. The variable and diverse O and H isotope data (− 1.9‰ to 17.3‰ and − 57‰ to 136‰ respectively) indicate that the Metzimevin iron ore formed initially from magmatic plumes and later enriched by magmatic-metamorphic-modified meteoric fluids. Mass balance calculations indicate mineralisation by combined leaching and precipitation, with an average iron enrichment factor of > 2.67 and SiO2 depletion factor of > 0.99. This is associated with an overall volume reduction of 28.27%, reflecting net leaching and volume collapse of the BIF protholith. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mantle plumes related to Large Igneous Provinces have been linked to continental break‐up and validated by the outpouring of mafic‐ultramafic magmas that range from continental flood basalt magmatism to submarine plateau volcanism. This study presents a new set of geochemical and mineralogical data on mafic magmatic rocks from the Sylhet Trap of the Shillong Plateau, northeast India. The investigated mafic rocks (basalt and dolerite) are predominantly sub‐alkaline‐tholeiitic, composed of bytownite+labradorite and diopside+augite, with ophitic to sub‐ophitic and glomeroporphyritic textures, the dark interstitial region of much finer grains consisting of opaque minerals and devitrified glass. The mafic rocks of Sylhet Trap show light rare earth elements enrichment with (La/Yb)N ratio (1.92–2.86) and (La/Sm)N ratio (1.11–1.40), an almost flat pattern of heavy rare earth elements along with mild europium anomalies (Eu/Eu*= 0.94–1.11). Trace element characteristics suggest their affinity towards enriched mid‐oceanic ridge basalt and generated from low degree of partial melting of spinel source with minor involvement of crustal contamination. The similarity in geochemical characteristics of the investigated mafic rocks with the magmatism of Rajmahal Traps, eastern Peninsular India, Abor Volcanics, eastern Himalaya, along with Bunbury Basalt of western Australia and Cona Mafic exposed in southeastern Tibet, suggests their genetic linkage with mantle plume activities. Thus, we argue that the magmatic event of the Sylhet Trap is related to the Kerguelen mantle plume activity that played a significant role in the fragmentation of eastern Gondwana during the Lower Cretaceous period, giving rise to Greater India, Antarctica and northwest Australia. A flare‐up of granitoids occurred at 465–445 Ma in the South Altyn Tagh, synchronously with the exhumation of subducted continental crust. Nevertheless, it remains enigmatic whether a petrogenetic connection exists between them. Here, we report a 454–451 Ma monzogranite pluton, which is characterized by abundant inherited zircons, located in the northern margin of the South Altyn Tagh high‐pressure (HP)—ultrahigh‐pressure (UHP) metamorphic terrane. U–Pb ages and Hf–O isotopic compositions of inherited and synmagmatic zircons are investigated to trace the source rocks and petrogenesis of this pluton. The inherited zircons (zircons that predate the magmatism) exhibit a wide range of ages from 2618 to 484 Ma, displaying three major peaks at 1800–1100 Ma, 1000–800 Ma and 500 Ma. By comparing these inheritance age patterns with zircon spectra of main (meta‐)sedimentary sequences and the widespread Early Neoproterozoic granites (presently as granitic gneisses) in South Altyn Tagh, along with zircon εHf(t) and whole‐rock Nd isotopic composition, we argue that the main source rocks of the studied monzogranite are Early Neoproterozoic granitic gneisses and Late Mesoproterozoic paragneisses from the South Altyn Tagh HP–UHP metamorphic terrane. The ca. 500 Ma inherited zircons have a metamorphic origin, which is simultaneous with the peak metamorphic ages of HP–UHP metamorphic rocks in the Altyn Tagh Complex. These observations indicate that the source rocks of the monzogranite pluton are the subducted continental crust, which underwent metamorphism at ca. 500 Ma and followed by partial melting at 454–451 Ma. In addition, synmagmatic zircons exhibit variable δ18O and εHf(t) values ranging from 5.4 to 11.7‰ and from −19 to +10.3, respectively, indicating a minor contribution of mantle‐derived melts in the formation of the monzogranite. Given the studied pluton and contemporaneous extensive granitoids (465–445 Ma), characterized by similar geochemistry and source rocks, are synchronous with the final exhumation of subducted South Altyn Tagh continental crust, we propose that the reworking of exhumed continental crust at middle to lower crustal depths is their main petrogenesis. The Neotethyan Sanandaj–Sirjan Zone of western Iran has recorded major magmatic activities due to its continental arc tectonic setting during the Mesozoic. The Varcheh mafic intrusions were less‐studied plutons in the northern Sanandaj–Sirjan Zone (SSZ). Field evidence, petrography, geochemistry and U–Pb geochronological data were used to determine petrographic composition, geochemical nature, crystallization age and also to suggest a conceptual tectonomagmatic model for their emplacement. Small plutonic bodies are dominantly composed of monzogabbro that have intruded into the Cretaceous sedimentary rocks. Based on U–Pb zircon datings, these rocks have crystallized at 125–118 Ma in late Early Cretaceous (Barremian–Aptian), and are older than the supposed ages reported on geological maps. Varcheh rocks are not just typical calc‐alkaline rocks and some show alkaline affinity. Negative anomalies in Nb–Ta–Ti and enrichments in some large‐ion lithophile elements on spider diagrams are consistent with a subduction‐zone setting. Potential deep source for magma generation is partial melting of subcontinental lithospheric mantle wedge above a subducting slab of oceanic lithosphere. The spaces for the Varcheh mafic intrusions are accommodated by dominant dextral strike‐slip movement in a continental arc experiencing extension during late Early Cretaceous subduction. According to the zircon U–Pb geochronology results in this paper and previous U–Pb ages in the northern part of the SSZ, the mid‐Cretaceous magmatism reveals a significant NW‐ward younging trend and migration of the magmatic arc from the Barremian–Aptian in south‐east to the Albian–Cenomanian in the north‐west. The mineral chemistry, whole-rock geochemistry, 40Ar / 39Ar dating and Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf isotopes of the Eocene Narman (Erzurum) Volcanic rocks in the southeast of the Eastern Pontides Orogenic Belt (EPOB, NE Türkiye) were investigated. The Narman Volcanites consist of basaltic dyke, basaltic lava, and basaltic volcanic breccia facies. Volcanites contain plagioclase (An34-80), clinopyroxene (Wo38-47En41-50Fs5-18), and olivine (Fo68-90) as phenocrystals with magnetite/titanomagnetite microphenocrysts. New 40Ar-39Ar ages suggest that these volcanic rocks erupted between 44.5 ± 0.1 and 43.4 ± 0.1 Ma, within the Middle Eocene (Lutetian). Narman Volcanites have calcalkaline character, with medium-high K content. Volcanites are enriched in large ion lithophile elements (LILE) and light rare earth elements (LREE), while they are depleted in terms of high field strength elements (HFSE). Chondrite-normalized rare earth element distributions have concave shape with moderate enrichment (LaN/LuN = 2.78–7.99), leading to consideration that the magmas forming the volcanics derived from similar sources. Isotopically, the rocks in the Narman Volcanites have low-medium initial 87Sr/86Sr values (0.70405–0.70485), initial 143Nd/144Nd values (0.512606–0.512848) and positive Ndi (+0.5 – +5.2). Depleted mantle Nd model ages were TDM1 = 0.29–0.62 Ga and TDM2 =0.43–0.83 Ga. (206Pb/204Pb)i, (207Pb/204Pb)i, and (208Pb/204Pb)i values vary in the ranges of 18.246–18.709, 15.578–15.616, and 38.225–38.791, respectively. The initial (176Hf/177Hf)i ratios for the volcanites are between 0.282770 and 0.283013, while the εHf values range from +7.6 to +9. All the evidence supports the conclusion that the parental magma for the rocks probably derived from an enriched lithospheric mantle, previously metasomatized by fluids derived from subducted slab during asthenospheric upwelling, due to fragmented asymmetric delamination in a postcollisional extensional tectonic environment. Identifying source orogens for syn-orogenic sediments in dispersed fragments of a supercontinent provides key information on the tectonic evolution of the orogens involved in supercontinent assembly and on paleogeographic reconstruction. An approach using U-Pb geochronology and trace elements of multiple detrital minerals including zircon, rutile, apatite, and monazite has major advantages over detrital zircon studies alone. Application of this multi-pronged approach to Ediacaran and Cambrian clastic sedimentary rocks from the West Cathaysia terrane of the South China block demonstrates that these rocks were deposited in two distinct, but overlapping, syn-orogenic basins related to the assembly of eastern Gondwana. The Ediacaran rocks have detritus likely sourced from the Paterson Petermann orogen (PPO) in Australia, and the dominant 650–600 Ma populations and trace element compositions of detrital rutile and apatite indicate a significant Ediacaran thermal and high-pressure metamorphic event in the orogen. The appearance of Cambrian and Tonian detrital rutile and apatite populations in the Cambrian rocks indicates derivation from a different source orogen characterized by multiple thermal events, most likely the Kuunga-Pinjarra orogen (KPO). Our data suggest that West Cathaysia was located adjacent to both the PPO and the KPO and support the hypothesis that the PPO was a collisional, rather than a long-lived post-Grenvillian intraplate, orogen. Our data also suggest a poly-metamorphic history for the poorly preserved northern part of the KPO and a larger expanse of Greater India. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The results of detailed mineralogical and geochemical studies of precious metals from ultrabasic rocks of the Ariadnoe massif (Sikhote-Alin orogenic belt) are presented. The presence of several varieties of gold with different ratios of Ag, Cu, and Hg has been revealed. Isoferroplatinum predominates among platinum minerals. The isotopic composition of ultrabasite sulfides corresponds to the mantle source, while basites are characterized by isotope–light sulfur, indicating the possibility of participation in the oreogenesis of crustal rocks. Isotope-carbon analysis of igneous rocks indicates that they contain derivatives of deep fluids and isotope-light biogenic matter of sedimentary rocks. The presented data show that mantle and crustal processes were involved in the formation of ore-bearing intrusions of ultrabasic–basic rocks. The association of ilmenite, gold, and platinum in ultrabasites and basites, a derivative of these processes, can serve as a search criterion for the detection of industrially promising sources of strategic metals. The Jiao-Liao-Ji Belt (JLJB) is one of the Paleoproterozoic orogenic belts within the North China Craton (NCC), whose tectonic evolution is still controversial due to multiple magmatic/metamorphic events after its formation. To tackle this controversy, we conducted petrological, geochronological, geochemical and zircon Hf isotopic studies for the meta-mafic rocks from the North Liaohe Group (NLG) in the central JLJB. 207Pb/206Pb weighted average ages of 1849 ± 36 Ma and 1853 ± 13 Ma indicate that the protoliths of the amphibolites in the Shisixian area formed at ca. 1.85 Ga. Geochemically, the amphibolites belong to tholeiitic series; while the meta-gabbros can be divided into the low-Ti and high-Ti types: the former belongs to calc-alkaline series, whereas the latter belongs to tholeiitic series. The high-Ti rocks are enriched in light rare earth elements (LREEs) and large-ion lithophile elements (LILEs; e.g., Ba, K and Pb), and depleted in heavy rare earth elements (HREEs) and high field strength elements (HFSEs; e.g., Nb, Ta, P and Ti). These rocks display slightly positive εHf(t) values (+1.40 to +2.02). The low-Ti meta-gabbros were most likely derived from the partial melting of the enriched lithospheric mantle in the spinel stability field, which was metasomatized by subduction-related fluids and/or melts with significant contamination of crustal material, while the amphibolites and high-Ti meta-gabbros were derived from partial melting of depleted asthenospheric mantle in the spinel stability field, which was metasomatized by limited subduction-related fluids and/or melts, coupled with fractional crystallization. The lithological and geochemical characteristics show that the low-Ti meta-gabbros formed in a magmatic arc environment, the high-Ti rocks formed in the later stage of a back-arc basin; while the amphibolites formed in a post-collisional extensional environment. Combined with literature data, we suggest that the JLJB experienced a process from subduction, collision, to extension: At ca. 2.2–2.1 Ga back-arc basin opened via southward subduction of an oceanic plate followed by northward subduction at ca. 2.1–1.91 Ga, and subsequently closed to form the JLJB at ca. 1.91 Ga, which led to the Longgang-Nangrim continental collision, and post-collision extension occurred at ca. 1.85 Ga along with the collapse of the collisional orogen. The scientific question of precisely determining the northern boundary of the Qinling Orogenic Belt (QOB) with regard to the southern segment of the North China Craton (S-NCC) has been controversial and unresolved, as it is heavily covered by loess and lacks some geological evidence. In order to identify the concrete northern boundary of the QOB, this paper first reports the metabasalt discovered in the Qianhe River Basin in Northwestern China, on the foundation of petrography, mineralogy, geochronology and geochemistry analyses. Detailed regional geological survey presents that the Qianhe metabasalt (QMB) is in unconformable contact with the Mesoproterozoic Gaoshanhe Group. Moreover, there is the new laser ablation (LA) inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) U-Pb dating for magmatic zircons that yielded a weighted mean age of 450 ± 9 Ma, revealing that the QMB occurred in the Late Ordovician rather than that in the Mesoproterozoic period as previously considered. Both major and trace elements show that the samples are characterized by the back-arc basin (BAB) basalt affinity. In addition, combined with the regional geology analysis, it stands to reason that the QMB is very similar to those of Ordovician Caotangou Group along the northern QOB (N-QOB). Accordingly, it is illuminated that the QMB belonging to the N-QOB, is more likely originated from the back-arc basin setting, and truly defines the QOB's northern boundary in this segment, which has prominent geoscientific significance for determining the tectonic boundary in the heavily loess-covered regions. Prior model construction is a fundamental component in geophysical inversion, especially Bayesian inversion. The prior model, usually derived from available geological information, can reduce the uncertainty of model characteristics during the inversion. However, the prior geological data for inferring a prior distribution model are often limited in real cases. Our work presents a novel framework to create 3D geophysical prior models using soil geochemistry and borehole rock sample measurements. We focus on the Bayesian inversion, which enables encoding of knowledge and multiple non-geophysical data into the prior. The new framework developed in our research comprises three main parts, namely correlation analysis, prior model reconstruction, and Bayesian inversion. We investigate the correlations between surface and subsurface geochemical features, as well as the correlation between geochemistry and geophysics, using canonical correlation analysis for the surface and borehole geochemistry. Based on the resulting correlations, we construct the prior susceptibility model. The informed prior model is then tested using geophysical forward modeling and outlier detection methods. In this test, we aim to falsify the prior model, which happens when the model cannot predict the field geophysical observation. To obtain the posterior models, the reliable prior models are incorporated into a Bayesian inversion framework. Using a real case of exploration in the Central African Copperbelt, we illustrate the workflow of constructing the high-resolution 3D stratigraphic model conditioned on soil geochemistry, borehole data, and airborne geophysics.
