The aim of this prospective, multi-center, practice-based cohort study was to analyze factors associated with the success of all-ceramic crowns.All-ceramic crowns placed in a practice-based research network ([Ceramic Success Analysis, AG Keramik) were analyzed. Data from 1254 patients with (mostly in-office CAD/CAM) all-ceramic crowns placed by 101 dentists being followed up for more than 5 years were evaluated. At the last follow-up visit crowns were considered as successful (not failed) if they were sufficient, whereas crowns were considered as survived (not lost) if they were still in function. Multi-level Cox proportional hazards models were used to evaluate the association between a range of predictors and time of success or survival.Within a mean follow-up period (SD) of 7.2(2)years [maximum:15years] 776 crowns were considered successful (annual failure rate[AFR]:8.4%) and 1041 crowns survived (AFR:4.9%). The presence of a post in endodontically treated teeth resulted in a risk for failure 2.7 times lower than that of restorations without a post (95%CI:1.4-5.0;p = 0.002). Regarding the restorative material and adhesive technique, hybrid composite ceramics and single-step adhesives showed a 3.4 and 2.2 times higher failure rate than feldspathic porcelain and multi-step adhesives, respectively (p0.001). Use of an oxygen-blocking gel as well as an EVA instrument resulted in a 1.5-1.8 times higher failure rate than their non-use (p ≤ 0.001).After up to 15years AFR were rather high for all-ceramic crowns. Operative factors, but no patient- or tooth-level factors were significantly associated with failure. The study was registered in the German Clinical Trials Register (DRKS-ID: DRKS00020271).

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES The effects of hypnosis on acute pain have been discussed recently, resulting in increased attention in the dental/maxillofacial field offering new perspectives, especially in emergency situations, trauma, or acute inflammatory situations where conventional pharmaceuticals are contraindicated due to allergies or intolerance reactions. DATA To systematically evaluate and assess the effects of hypnosis on acute dental/facial pain relief. Randomized controlled trials, cohort studies, controlled clinical trials, cross-sectional studies, evaluation, and validation studies, following the PRISMA guidelines, of human subjects of all ages were included. SOURCES Five electronic databases (Cochrane, Embase, MEDLINE via PubMed, LILACS, Scopus) were screened for studies published between 1989 - 2021. A NIH quality-assessment-tool was performed. STUDY SELECTION/RESULTS 27 papers have been included and a meta-analysis was performed. Hypnosis has been reported to reduce intraoperative and postoperative pain as well as the use of analgesics in various dental procedures such as tooth extraction. Highly hypnotizable subjects generally respond better to hypnosis. Different hypnosis techniques were used for pain relief and relaxation. The studies show a large heterogeneity. CONCLUSION Although there are only a small number of studies on the subject so far, evidence can be confirmed for the effects of hypnosis on acute pain relief in dental/maxillofacial area. Despite the promising results, further research is needed. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Hypnosis offers a possible alternative to conventional pain medications for acute dental and maxillofacial pain, especially in cases of allergies or contraindications; it can be easily applied by a trained practitioner.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES The worldwide severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 pandemic challenges adolescents’ mental health. In this study, we aim to compare the number of pediatric ICU (PICU) admissions after suicide attempts during the first German lockdown and one year later during a second, prolonged lockdown with prepandemic years. METHODS A retrospective multicenter study was conducted among 27 German PICUs. Cases RESULTS Total admissions and suicide attempts declined during the first lockdown in 2020 (standardized morbidity ratio 0.74 (95% confidence interval; 0.58–0.92) and 0.69 (0.43–1.04), respectively) and increased in 2021 (standardized morbidity ratio 2.14 [1.86–2.45] and 2.84 [2.29–3.49], respectively). Fatal suicide rates remained stable between 2017 to 2019 and 2020 (1.57 vs 1.48 per 100 000 adolescent years) with monthly numbers showing no clear trend during the course of 2020. CONCLUSIONS This study shows a strong increase in serious suicide attempts among adolescents during the course of the pandemic in Germany. More research is needed to understand the relation between pandemic prevention measures and suicidal ideation to help implement mental health support for adolescents.

Background The study was aimed to describe caries prevalence and severity and health inequalities among Italian preschool children with European and non-European background and to explore the potential presence of a social gradient. Methods The ICDAS (International Caries Detection and Assessment System) was recorded at school on 6,825 children (52.8% females). Caries frequency and severity was expressed as a proportion, recording the most severe ICDAS score observed. Socioeconomic status (SES) was estimated by mean a standardized self-submitted questionnaire filled-in by parents. The Slope Index of Inequality (SII) based on regression of the mid-point value of caries experiences score for each SES group was calculated and a social gradient was generated, children were stratified into four social gradient levels based on the number of worst options. Multivariate regression models (Zero-Inflated Negative Binomial logistic and logistic regression) were used to elucidate the associations between all explanatory variables and caries prevalence. Results Overall, 54.4% (95%CI 46.7–58.3%) of the children were caries-free; caries prevalence was statistically significant higher in children with non-European background compared to European children (72.6% vs 41.6% p p = 0.03). A statistically significant trend was observed for ICDAS 5/6 score and the worst social/behavioral level (Z = 5.24, p p = 0.01) to caries prevalence. The purpose of this study was to determine the accessory canal filling potential of vertical and lateral condensation techniques in simulated root canals. A total of 130 prepared transparent, straight-simulated root canals with nine accessory canals (0.02 mm), prepared at different levels from the apical, were obturated with vertical (n = 100) and 30 lateral condensation (n = 30) techniques. 50.33% of the accessory canals obturated with vertical condensation were completely filled with gutta-percha; 37.78% completely filled with gutta-percha and sealer. 61.11% of the accessory canals were completely filled with sealer only using the lateral condensation technique. The vertical condensation technique filled the accessory canals more frequently than the lateral condensation techniques. The lateral condensation technique was not capable of delivering gutta-percha to any of the accessory canals. The apical third showed the lowest accessory canal filling frequency with both techniques.

Introduction The aim of this study was to investigate the root canal system morphology of maxillary first premolars by means of micro–computed tomographic imaging in a Swiss-German population. Methods The root canal configuration (RCC) of 115 maxillary first premolars (Mx1Ps) were investigated by means of micro–computed tomographic imaging and 3-dimensional imaging. The RCC and the physiological foramina results are described by a 4-digit system code. Results Twelve different RCCs were observed in 30 single-rooted Mx1Ps; 2-2-2/2 (30.0%), 1-2-2/2 (13.3%), 1-2-1/2 (10%), and 2-2-1/2 (10.0%) were the most frequent ones. Seven different RCCs were observed in 2-rooted Mx1Ps (n = 81) in which the 1-1-1/1 (56.8%), 1-1-1/2 (29.6%), and 1-1-2/2 (8.6%) in the buccal root and 1-1-1/1 (92.6%) and 1-1-1/2 (6.2%) in the palatal root RCCs appeared most frequently. Three-rooted Mx1Ps (n = 4) showed a 1-1-1/1 (100.0%) RCC in all roots. The buccal root canal in 2-rooted Mx1Ps had 1 physiological foramen in 59.3% and 2 in 40.7% and 1 to 6 accessory foramina in 38.2%. The palatal root canal showed 1 physiological foramen in 93.8% and 2 in 6.2% and 1 to 2 accessory foramina in 14.8%. Single-rooted Mx1Ps showed 1 physiological foramen in 10.0%, 2 in 70.0%, 3 in 13.3%, and 4 in 6.7% and 1 to 3 accessory foramina in 46.7%. Conclusions The results of this study provide detailed morphologic RCC information of Mx1Ps in a Swiss-German population. Single-rooted Mx1Ps showed morphologic diversifications more frequently than 2- or 3-rooted Mx1Ps. Within 2-rooted Mx1Ps, the buccal root had higher RCC variety, accessory canals, and foramina number than the palatal root.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of different cleansing solutions on the retention of precision attachments. A precision attachment patrix was embedded into acrylic resin and the matrix was placed onto the patrix. The red (high retention, 8 N), yellow (regular retention, 6 N), and green (reduced retention, 4 N) plastic matrixes of the attachments (n = 32) were soaked in three different denture cleansing solutions (sodium laureth sulfate, sodium bicarbonate-sodium perborate, sodium bicarbonate) for a duration simulating 6 months of clinical use. The control group was soaked in tap water. A universal testing machine was used to measure the retention values of attachments after they were soaked in denture cleansers. The retention values were compared among the groups with repeated-measures analysis of variance followed by the Tukey HSD test (p = 0.05). Yellow attachments were affected by sodium laureth sulfate, sodium bicarbonate-sodium perborate, and water (p = 0.012). Green attachments’ retention increased after immersion in sodium laureth sulfate (p = 0.04) and water (p = 0.02). Red attachments’ retention increased after immersion in sodium laureth sulfate or sodium bicarbonate-sodium perborate (p = 0.045). Water did not affect the retention of red attachments. Because sodium bicarbonate tablets did not affect the retention of attachments, clinicians may recommend their use as a cleanser. Clinicians also may inform patients using fixed and removable partial prostheses with precision attachments of a possible increase in retention after the use of sodium laureth sulfate or when using sodium bicarbonate-sodium perborate with yellow and red attachments.

Hypnosis is a commonly used therapy option in dentistry and medicine for fear and pain reduction. Nevertheless, it is viewed very critically, as there is still insufficient evidence for a treatment effect. Specific phobia of dental treatment and dental anxiety are prevalent conditions that can cause an oral health impairment. This paper critically reviews 19 clinical trials aimed at reducing dental anxiety and fear avoidance in adults, published in peer-reviewed journals between 1979 and 2021. The search identified 257 papers; 223 were selected after removing duplicates. A total of 188 articles were excluded after title and abstract evaluation; 35 full text articles were assessed for eligibility. Another 10 papers were discharged after full text evaluation, as these were case reports and questionnaires. Six papers were discharged due to the lack of a comparable scale to measure dental anxiety. The following treatment techniques were reviewed: various forms of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), relaxation training, benzodiazepine premedication, self-hypnosis by audio therapy, hypnotherapy, hypnosis, and nitrous oxide sedation. CBT delivered in a variety of formats, including one-session treatment, showed the most evidence for the efficacy of reducing anxiety. A wide heterogeneity of methods allowed only the inclusion of five studies to the performed meta-analysis, showing contrasting results for the application of hypnosis. The main reason for this issue is the great variety in methods used, making a distinct assessment of hypnotic interventions difficult. However, the results of the systematic review are promising in that hypnosis can also be regarded as powerful and successful method for anxiety reduction, while there are also studies with a small or even slightly negative effect. Therefore, further research is needed. Within the limitations of the current study, a more consistent use of methods to examine anxiety for hypnosis research is recommended.

To assess whether the treatment of children with oral midazolam and pediatric hypnosis techniques can improve the compliance in consecutive sessions, a retrospective longitudinal practice-based observational study was designed and carried out. A total of 311 children between 3 and 12 years of age were treated under hypnosis and sedation with midazolam (0.40 mg/kg body weight). Treatments were performed in one to a maximum of three sessions. A total of 183 children received one, 103 received two and 25 children received three treatment sessions. The behavior of the children during the sessions was examined by means of the Venham score. The self-evaluation of the children was based on the Wong-Baker Scale. Child behavior using midazolam and hypnosis techniques showed little difference and good compliance between the sessions. Venham scores did not increase significantly regarding total treatment from the first (0.99 ± 1.41) to the second (1.17 ± 1.39) and to the third session (1.27 ± 1.20) (

Dentists are on the frontline of infection, especially when it comes to respiratory viruses like the new coronavirus. The purpose of this paper is to conduct a scoping review to better understand dentists' risk awareness, awareness of COVID-19 symptoms, preventive measures, and effective methods of COVID-19 infection prevention and management. This paper systematically assesses the published literature on dentistry and COVID-19. Various electronic databases including Ovid MEDLINE, Scopus, Embase, and MEDLINE via PubMed were searched up to 9 September 2021. Overall, 39 papers were included. Almost the entirety of dentists (94.5%) reported awareness of the three most common COVID-19 symptoms, and a risk awareness score of about 90% was shown, while 88.2% of dentists reported adopting preventive measures. More than 50% did not want to treat infected people. While 70.3% of dentists recommended usage of N95 masks, the rate of dentists using them was below 40%. Sufficient awareness of risks during the pandemic was found in dentists. Although they were using preventive measures, there remains upside potential for adopting all recommended measures. Further, the usage of N95 masks is improvable, even though the benefit of wearing them could not be confirmed.

Adequate endodontic diagnostic is essential when making a therapy decision. Radiographic imagining acquisition methods (IAMs) are fundamental apical lesions of endodontic (ALE) origin diagnose tool. Thus, the aim of this research was to compare the simulated apical lesions (SALs) diagnose potential of digital intraoral radiography (DIR) and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), if there is a relationship between the IAMs, SALs-depth and their correct diagnose likelihood in human mandibular specimens' datasets. 1024 SALs were prepared in cancellous and cortical bone with different penetration depths. The SALs-stages were radiographed with CBCT and DIR. The IAMs were randomly evaluated by 16 observers in two trials. Possible SAL findings were analyzed according to a five-point scale. The null hypothesis established that SALs detection accuracy does not differ between CBCT and DIR. Significantly differences (first 0.935 and second trial 0.960) were found for the CBCT area under the curve when compared with the DIR (first 0.859 and second trial 0.862) findings. SALs of smaller size were earlier detected by CBCT. In SALs without cortical involvement the probability of detection increased from 90 to 100%. The SALs-depth had the highest detectability influence on cancellous bone lesions and CBCT SALs detectability was 84.9% higher than with DIR images. The CBCT diagnose reproducibility was higher than the one of DIR (Kappa CBCT 75.7-81.4%; DIR 53.4-57.1%). Our results showed that CBCT has a higher SALs IAM diagnosing accuracy and that SALs detection accuracy incremented as the SALs-size increased.

OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to examine the typical personality traits of dentists and to discuss critically their influence on the necessary characteristics for a good dentist-patient relationship. METHODS Two groups were invited via e-mail to participate the study in 2015-2020. One group consisted of German dentists (DENT N=580). The other group was formed by German speaking psychotherapists from Germany, Austria and Switzerland (DACH N=1.027). The Personality Styles and Disorder Inventory was used in its short form (PSDI-S) via online survey. The normalization sample (NORM N=3.392) of the PSDI-S was used to compare the results with a normative sample. RESULTS Dentists differed in 10 out of 14 personality styles from the normalization sample (NORM), and in 13 out of 14 personality styles compared with the psychotherapists (DACH). Female dentists differed in 7 out of 14 personality styles to their male colleagues. CONCLUSIONS The most significant differences in personality styles were willful (PN), spontaneous (BL), reserved (SZ), ambitious (NA), optimistic (RH) and conscientious (ZW), which seem to be necessary for a good dentist-patient relationship and dental procedures. The expression of personality styles is most likely to influence the choice, delivery and cost as well as patient perception of treatment. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Dentist's personality has an important impact on the interpersonal, which influences the dentist-patient relationship and its therapeutic outcome.

INTRODUCTION Bacteria and/or toxin residuals in the furcation areas of mandibular and maxillary molars can be the cause of persistent periapical tissue inflammation before or after an endodontic treatment. METHODS The objective of this ex vivo study was to investigate the frequency of interradicular canals and diverticula in first and second mandibular and first and second maxillary molars by means of micro-computed tomographic imaging. Five hundred thirteen extracted molars, 211 mandibular molars and 302 maxillary molars, were included in this investigation. The area between the pulp chamber floor (PCF) and the furcation area was examined, and the data obtained were evaluated with imaging software that generated the corresponding 3-dimensional images. The results were analyzed by means of descriptive statistics. RESULTS Interradicular canals were observed in 2.8% and 0.3% of the mandibular and maxillary molars, respectively. The diverticula (blind-ended interradicular canals) originated either at the furcation area or at the PCF. The diverticula frequency observed in mandibular molars was 3.3% (PCF) and 4.3% (bifurcation). The maxillary molar diverticula frequency observed was 2.0% (trifurcation), with none of them originating at the PCF. Altogether (n = 513) diverticula originated more frequently from the PCF (59.1%) than from the furcation area (40.9%). CONCLUSIONS Although interradicular canals as well as diverticula were observed in a relatively small number of the investigated molars, practitioners should always be aware of their existence because without an adequate chemical debridement/disinfection of the pulp chamber root canal system, successful endodontic treatment could be compromised in up to 10% of the cases.

Purpose Antibiotic exposure among hospitalized children is very high. With inappropriate antimicrobial use resulting in increased rates of antimicrobial resistance, the implementation of antibiotic stewardship programs is critically needed. This survey study aimed to identify current practice and knowledge about antibiotic stewardship and infection control among paediatricians in tertiary care paediatric hospitals in and around Munich, Germany. Methods A prospective cross-sectional study based on an anonymous questionnaire, structured into different sub-sections regarding antibiotic use, antimicrobial resistance, antibiotic stewardship and infection control, was conducted between 1st of May and 30th of June 2016 in five paediatric hospitals. Results In total, 111 paediatricians across all grades were eligible for participation. The overall proportion of correct answers for all sub-sections of the survey ranged from 54.1% correct answers in the antibiotic handling and bacterial resistance section to 72.9% correct answers in the hospital hygiene/infection control section. In general, knowledge across all categories was similar for junior doctors, middle-grade doctors or consultants. Advocating empiric use of narrow-spectrum instead of broad-spectrum antibiotics was considered to be the most difficult measure to implement in daily practice (36.9%). De-escalation from broad-spectrum empirical therapy to targeted treatment was considered the easiest measure to achieve (43.2%). Conclusion Our results demonstrate that principles of antimicrobial stewardship and aspects of hospital hygiene/infection control are not satisfactorily known among hospital-based paediatricians in and around Munich. We identified four important target areas for future educational interventions that should play a more prominent role in both pre- and postgraduate medical training.

Objectives: The aim of this RCT was to compare the caries preventive efficacy and the slowing down of previous caries lesions of toothpastes containing fluoride biomimetic hydroxyapatite (HA) complex compared to sodium monofluorophosphate fluoridated toothpastes in Italian schoolchildren. To validate this hypothesis a triple-blind randomized clinical trial was designed. Methods: In total 610 children (4-5 and 6-7 years) were enrolled. Four toothpastes, two containing fluoride-substituted hydroxyapatite (HAF) (1000 and 1450 ppmF) and magnesium-, strontium-, carbonate-substituted hydroxyapatite, in a chitosan matrix and two Mono fluoridated toothpastes (1000 and 1450 ppmF) were randomly administered during 24 months to two groups with younger children (Gyoung) and to two groups with older children (Gold), those containing 1450 ppmF. ICDAS was used to score lesions as initial (up to score 2), moderate (scores 3-4) and severe (scores 5-6). The children were instructed to brush for two minutes three times/day. Caries examination was repeated at 12 and 24 months. The efficacy of the treatment was assessed by calculating the reduction in Risk Ratio (RR) and the number needed to treat (NNT). Results; Overall, 518 patients (Gyoung = 268; Gold = 250) concluded the trial. The drop-rate was 11.84% for Gyoung and 17.22% for Gold. The caries increment at 24-month evaluation was statistically lower in the primary dentition in the HAF arms compared to the traditional fluoridated arms (0.18 vs 0.27 p = 0.04 in Gyoung and 0.16 vs 0.30 p = 0.01 in Gold for severe lesions). In the permanent dentition (Gold), caries increase was also statistically lower in the HAF arm, both for initial and severe lesions (0.09 vs 0.17 p = 0.02 and 0.18 vs 0.28 p = 0.01, respectively). In primary dentition, children receiving HAF Toothpaste had a RR of 39% (Gyoung) and 38% (Gold), compared to children receiving traditional Toothpastes. The RR in the permanent dentition was 29% in children treated with HAF toothpaste. Conclusions; The use of toothpastes containing biomimetic hydroxyapatite and fluoride reduces caries increment in children over a period of 2 years more than traditional fluoridated toothpastes. The main goal of an endodontic treatment is a complete debridement of the root canal system; however, currently mechanical shaping and chemical cleaning procedures for this purpose have deemed non-satisfactory.The efficacy of peracetic acid (PAA; 0.5, 1.0, 2.0%), as a root canal irrigation solution, against Enterococcus faecalis (DSM 20478) and Parvimonas micra (DSM 20468) when compared with the one of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCI; 1.0, 3.0, 5.0%), chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX; 0.12, 0.2, 2.0%) and 0.9% NaCI (as a control solution) was in vitro investigated with the agar diffusion and direct contact methods. The inhibition zone diameters observed with the agar diffusion test were determined. The viable bacterial counts (CFU/ml) were calculated with the direct method.The agar diffusion test showed that all three root canal irrigation solutions had an efficacy against E. faecalis at all concentrations. The largest inhibition zone diameters against E. faecalis were observed with 5.0% NaOCI. At all three concentrations of PAA, NaOCI, and CHX, the inhibition zone diameter increased with increase in concentration. For P. micra, PAA had a similar inhibition zone diameter despite a concentration increase. In contrast, for NaOCI and CHX, the inhibition zone diameter increased with increasing concentration. 2.0% CHX produced the largest inhibition zone diameter against P. micra. For E. faecalis, only the comparison between 2.0% PAA and 5.0% NaOCI showed statistical significance (p = 0.004). For P. micra the efficacy comparison between the lowest, middle, and highest concentrations of each solution, a statistical significance (p 0.05) was found for all three solutions. After direct contact with PAA, NaOCI and CHX, no viable bacteria could be determined for either P. micra or E. faecalis.PAA had a similar antibacterial efficacy as the one of NaOCl and CHX when in direct contact with E. faecalis and P. micra. In the agar diffusion test, PAA showed a similar antibacterial efficacy as the one of CHX and a lower one as the one of NaOCl for E. faecalis.

Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, diabetes, cancer and diseases of the oral cavity such as caries or periodontitis represent a global and highly relevant problem due to demographic and epidemiological changes. They are not only responsible for millions of deaths worldwide, but also cause relevant costs for national economies arise for the health care of societies. Assuming that oral health and general health are directly linked, emerging interactions between systemic and oral diseases are increasingly being researched. Common important risk factors have implications for economic, social, and moral determinants of health. Interdisciplinarily trained oral health professionals are needed to address the excessively high rates of oral disease inequities. The main reason that oral disease is still a global health problem is the link to mainly individual subjective high-risk approaches, which is traditionally transmitted resulting in high costs and low effectiveness. A paradigm shift for a public health approach is proposed and needed for the population that integrates other health professionals who deal with NCDs and care for patients. Oral care, like physical activity, is one of the most important lifestyle-related determinants of health. Widespread recognition of these facts is critical to both reducing the impact of oral and non-oral NCDs. A multi-sectoral, comprehensive and integrated approach is therefore necessary. The focus should be on social, environmental and population strategies, but should also support individual strategies.

Introduction The aim of this study was to examine the root canal system morphology of mandibular incisors by means of micro–computed tomographic imaging. Methods The root canal configuration, physiological foramina, frequency of accessory and connecting canals, and the size and shape of the physiological foramina of 125 mandibular incisors were investigated by means of micro-CT and 3-dimensional imaging software. Root canal configuration of the coronal, middle, and apical thirds and the physiological foramina number are described by a 4-digit system code. Results The most frequent root canal configurations were 1-1-1/1 (56%), 1-2-1/1 (17.6%), and 1-1-1/2 (10.4%); 9 additional different root canal configurations were observed. Single-rooted incisors showed in 80% 1, in 16% 2, and in 4% 3 physiological foramina, respectively. Accessory canals were found in only 13.6% of the investigated teeth. Connecting canals were observed in 36% of the sample, most often in root canal configurations 1-2-1/1 (12.8%) and 2-2-1/1 (7.2%). The morphologic dimensions of a total of 146 physiological foramina were measured. Their mean wide and narrow diameters were 0.24 mm (standard deviation = 0.1 mm) and 0.23 mm (standard deviation = 0.08 mm) when only 1 physiological foramen was present. The physiological foramen shapes observed were oval (56%), round (28.8%), and irregular (15.2%). Conclusions The study provides detailed information about the root canal morphology of anterior teeth in a German population. Within the limitations of the study, the authors recommend according to results obtained in this investigation a final physiological foramen preparation size of ISO 30-35; yet, such a decision should be carefully considered on an individual basis.

The Alaunian Seefeld Member of the Upper Triassic, a dark grey laminated and bituminous dolomitic limestone succession outcropping near the Wiestal-reservoir lake northeast of Hallein (Salzburg, Austria) is known for its extremely rich ‘ganoid’ fish fauna since more than a century. A privately initiated excavation that took place from 2012 to 2014 yielded far more than a thousand well-preserved fish fossils recovered largely from five mm-thin fossil horizons. The actinopterygian assemblage is dominated by several growth stages of the highly variable ginglymodian Paralepidotus ornatus, allowing for a documentation of ontogenetic transformations in cranial and postcranial morphology, dentition and squamation patterns, associated with habitat and dietary shifts. Small-sized swarm-fishes such as the macrosemiid Legnonotus and the teleost Pholidophorus are rather common members of the assemblage, while the occurrence of the ginglymodian Semiolepis, the dapediid Dandya, the dwarfish pycnodont Eomesodon and the large predatory ‘palaeopterygian’ Saurichthys is restricted to rare individuals. A single scale of a large-sized coelacanth, a well-preserved, small lobster-like decapod, plant remains and coaly gagate derived from disarticulated driftwood belong to rare associated finds. Both the perfect preservation of all fossils and the bituminous laminated dolomitic limestones barren of microfossils argue for a deposition under anoxic conditions, most probably due to salinity stratification. The occurrence of complete swarms, partly showing isoorientation of fish carcasses in distinct layers, speaks in favour of recurrent and rapid mortality events triggered by upwelling anoxic bottom water, most likely released by severe tropical storms.

Studies of brain-plasticity changes in hypnosis using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), positron-emission-tomography (PET) and electroencephalography (EEG) were reviewed. The authors found evidence in those studies that hypnosis is a powerful and successful method for inhibiting the reaction of the fear circuitry structures. Limitations of the studies were critically discussed, and implications for future research were made. The authors are currently using a portable fNIRS apparatus to integrate the scanning device into real life situations in medical practice. Their aim is to disentangle the neuronal mechanisms and physiological correlates in patients with severe fear of medical treatments when directly confronted with anxiety-provoking stimuli and to assess the effects of a brief hypnosis. Drawing on evidence from several technological modalities, neuroimaging and physiological studies pave the road to a better scientific understanding of neural mechanisms of hypnosis.

Owing to the physical properties of copper and its alloys it is challenging to achieve good surface quality and low porosity by the widely used laser-based additive manufacturing processes. This paper deals with the role of alloy composition, powder size and process parameters in additive manufacturing with laser beam melting machine (with power up to 100 W). Test parts were produced in pure copper and CuNiSi(Cr) alloys. The porosity was investigated as a function of different process parameters and powder size ranges. The effects of the alloy physical properties (reflectivity, thermal conductivity, melting range and surface tension) are discussed. Moreover, the effect of thermal treatment on the properties of CuNiSi parts was assessed in conventional two-step heat treatments.

Removal of esthetic restorations leads to loss of tooth structure and the extent of the loss is difficult to estimate due to exact-shade matching. This randomized double-blinded in vitro study aimed examining the influence of a white-opaque flowable composite depth marker as an optical removal aid for tooth substance preservation and shortened restoration removal time.Class II cavities (n = 100) in extracted healthy mandibular molars (n = 50, two runs) were prepared, filled, and the restoration removed. Tooth weight and volume (before and after) and removal time were measured and remnants visually documented. An optimal tooth shade-matched flowable composite liner was used as control.Tooth structure loss was significantly lower using a white-opaque liner. ObjectiveTo compare the number of accident- and injury-related admissions to pediatric intensive care units (PICU) during the first German COVID-19 lockdown with previous years. To investigate if shifts in types of accidents or injuries occurred, especially regarding non-accidental injuries.DesignRetrospective observational multicenter study.Setting37 German PICUs.Patients1444 children and adolescents < 18 years admitted to German PICUs due to trauma or injuries during the first German lockdown period (16.3.-31.5.2020) and during the same periods of the years 2017-2019.InterventionsNone.Measurements and main resultsStandardized morbidity ratios (SMR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated for the severity of disease, admission reasons, types of accidents, injury patterns, surgeries and procedures, and outcomes. Disease severity did not differ from previous years. We found an increase in ingestions (SMR 1.41 (CI 0.88 – 2.16)) and a decrease in aspirations (0.77 (0.41 – 1.32)) and burns (0.82 (0.59 – 1.12)). The total number of admissions for trauma remained constant, but traffic accidents (0.76 (0.56 – 1.01) and school/kindergarten accidents (0.25 (0.05 – 0.74) decreased. Household (1.32 (1.05 – 1.64)) and leisure accidents (1.32 (1.05 – 1.65)) increased. Injured structures did not change, but less neurosurgeries (0.69 (0.42 – 1.07)) and more visceral surgeries (2.00 (1.14 – 3.24)) were performed. Non-accidental non-suicidal injuries declined (0.85 (0.50 – 1.37)). Suicide attempts increased in adolescent boys (1.57 (0.58 – 3.42)), while there was a decrease in adolescent girls (0.86 (0.53 – 1.31)).ConclusionsOur study showed shifts in trauma types and associated surgeries during the lockdown period that are generally in line with current literature. The decreased number of non-accidental non-suicidal injuries we observed does not suggest a fundamental increase in severe child abuse during the lockdown period. The decrease in suicide attempts among adolescent girls confirms previous findings, while the increase among boys has not been described yet and deserves further investigation.

Oral healthcare is organized subsidiarily and independently by nation states in Europe and also within the EU and consequently, major differences between the nation states and the various oral healthcare systems in Europe are present. The socialization in the respective catchment area can have an impact on the job choice and the perception of employment opportunities of different professional groups. Therefore, the purpose of this survey was to elucidate the influence of different oral healthcare systems on students living or studying in the respective catchment area. A questionnaire (in English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish) with 18 different components was administered. Data on gender, age, country of origin, university, semester, nationality, expected time of graduation, and forecast for future professional practices were gathered. In addition, 3851 students participated (2863 f/988 m). The sample distribution was uneven with predominantly Bismarckian and Southern European System participants. The National oral health care system was statistically significantly linked (p &lt, 0.01) to the ownership period of a dental practice. Students in Bismarckian and Nordic systems tended to find their own practice earlier than in the Beverdigian system or Southern European and Transitional—East European systems. An association between the oral health care system and vocational training was inhomogeneous, but also significantly different (p &lt, 0.01). The majority (47.51%, n = 1555) would like to work in their own practice, 18.95% (n = 621) want to establish a practice with two or more owners. It was striking that no student would like to work in the investor practice/practice chain of both Nordic, Beveridgian and Transitional—East European countries systems (p &lt, 0.01). The oral health care system in which a dental student grows up/resides/studies influences the career choice/perception of future professional practice.

Using multi-modal brain imaging techniques we found pronounced changes in neuronal activity after hypnotic trance induction whereby state changes seem to occur synchronously with the specific induction instructions. In clinical patients, hypnosis proved to be a powerful method in inhibiting the reaction of the fear circuitry structures. The aim of the present paper is to critically discuss the limitations of the current neuroscientific research database in the light of a debate in defining relevant hypnotic constructs and to suggest ideas for future research projects. We discuss the role of hypnotic suggestibility (HS), the impact of hypnotic inductions and the importance of the depth of hypnotic trance. We argue that future research on brain imaging studies on the effects of hypnosis and hypnotherapy should focus on the analysis of individual cross-network activation patterns. A most promising approach is to simultaneously include physiological parameters linked to cognitive, somatic, and behavioral effects.

This clinical case report demonstrates the successful application of hypnosis in an anxious four-year-old boy in whom two primary molars were treated with a composite filling. The almost 16-minute pediatric dental treatment was performed without complications and without interruptions. It could be shown that hypnosis can be used for the pediatric dental treatment of decayed primary tooth lesions. In the specific individual case hypnosis was not only used adjuvant but as an alternative to local anesthesia. A dental anxiety reducing effect and an elimination of pain perception were observed, so that the treatment was possible without anesthesia. It was also found that the communication and rapport between the practitioner and the four-year-old child were improved using hypnosis. There is still a need for high quality studies on the numerous positive effects that hypnosis has on pediatric dental treatment.
