7. Cylinder wakes in shallow oscillatory flow: the coastal island wake problem

Abstract

Topographic complexity on continental shelves is the catalyst that transforms the barotropic tide into the secondary and residual circulations that dominate vertical and cross-shelf mixing processes. Island wakes are one such example that are observed to significantly influence the transport and distribution of biological and physical scalars. Despite the importance of island wakes, to date, no sufficient, mechanistic description of the physical processes governing their development exists for the general case of unsteady tidal forcing. Controlled laboratory experiments are necessary for the understanding of this complex flow phenomena. Three-dimensional velocity field measurements of cylinder wakes in shallow-water, oscillatory flow are conducted across a parameter space that is typical of tidal flow around shallow islands. Previous studies investigated the wake form dependance on $KC=U_0T/D$, where $KC$ is the Keulegan-Carpenter number, $D$ is the island diameter, $U_0$ the tidal velocity amplitude and $T$ the tidal period, and the stability parameter $S=c_fD/h$ where $h$ is the water depth and $c_f$ is the bottom boundary friction coefficient. In this study we demonstrate that when the influence of bottom friction is confined to a Stokes boundary layer the parameter $S=\delta^+/KC$ where $\delta^+=\delta/h$ and $\delta=2\pi\sqrt{2\nu/\omega}$ is the wavelength of the Stokes bottom boundary layer. Three classes of wake form are observed for decreasing wake stability: \emph{(1) Steady Bubble} for $S\gtrsim 0.1$; \emph{(2) Unsteady Bubble} for $0.06\lesssim S \lesssim 0.1$; and \emph{(3) Vortex Shedding} for $S\lesssim 0.06$. Transitions in wake form and wake stability are shown to depend on the magnitude and temporal evolution of the wake return flow. Abstract

New experimental techniques are allowing, for the first time, direct visualization of mass and momentum transport across the sediment-water interface in streams. These experimental insights are catalyzing a renaissance in our understanding of the role stream turbulence plays in a host of critical ecosystem services, including nutrient cycling. In this commentary, we briefly review the nature of stream turbulence and its role in hyporheic exchange and nutrient cycling in streams. A simple process-based model, borrowed from biochemical engineering, provides the link between empirical relationships for grain-scale turbulent mixing and nutrient processing at reach, catchment, continental, and global scales.

Abstract

Water flow on plant canopies determines the partitioning of intercepted rainfall between stemflow and throughflow, yet understanding of these flow processes remains minimally developed. Plant canopies may concentrate intercepted water into rivulets that flow beneath branches. If the rivulets remain attached to branches until they encounter the main tree trunk, they form stemflow. If the rivulets detach from branches, however, they form 'pour points', regions of concentrated throughfall. Here, rivulet flow below uniform cylinders was studied experimentally. Experimental observations were interpreted using hydrodynamic theory to predict the likelihood of a rivulet detaching based on a critical rivulet height (λc$$ {\lambda}_c $$). Predictions of rivulet detachment were explored for a simplified case where water is introduced at known flow rates at a discrete point above a uniform, cylindrical 'branch'. Where the branch was straight, the percentage of trials forming a rivulet, or the rivulet formation rate, increased with increasing branch inclination angle to the horizontal axis. Rivulet formation rates did not vary with flow rate. However, the volume of water collected at the end of the branch, analogous to stemflow, decreased with a higher flow rates due to the formation of flow instabilities. Rivulets forming on straight branches did not detach. Instead, the rivulet stream accelerated and reduced in height as it flowed along the cylinder. Rivulets formed on curved branches detached only when the branch axis after the curve approached the horizontal. Future theoretical and experimental studies can extend this work to improve understanding of more complex surfaces and branch architectures to mechanistically understand canopy interception. 12. Wake structure of an array of cylinders in shallow flow.

Abstract

Although there is a range of approaches for classifying the wake structure behind an array of obstacles, these approaches provide inconsistent results across different array systems. This motivates the present study to integrate and reconcile these approaches into one that is consistent across different systems. This new, transferable classification approach is based on the dimensionless flow blockage of the array and the wake stability parameter. To demonstrate this approach, a series of laboratory experiments was conducted to characterise the wake structure behind an array of emergent cylinders across a practically relevant parameter space that has not previously been explored. Two arrays with the same values of flow blockage and wake stability parameters but different sizes display the same wake structure, demonstrating the controlling influence of these two parameters on the wake structure. This approach classifies four different wake structures, which are distinct in that they display differences in instantaneous and time-averaged flow fields, temporal velocity oscillations, shear layer growth and the length of the steady wake region. The dependence of the wake structure on the two parameters is a consequence of (i) the controlling influence of blockage on the fraction of incident flow passing through the array and (ii) the ability of shallowness to suppress wake instabilities and, to a lesser extent, also influence the velocity through the array. This paper provides a predictive framework for the wake structure based on knowledge of the array geometry, and the depth and velocity of incident flow across the entire relevant practical parameter space. Video abstractAt Mistaken Point, Newfoundland, Canada, rangeomorph "fronds" dominate the earliest (579-565 million years ago) fossil communities of large (0.1 to 2 m height) multicellular benthic eukaryotes. They lived in low-flow environments, fueled by uptake [1-3] of dissolved reactants (osmotrophy). However, prokaryotes are effective osmotrophs, and the advantage of taller eukaryotic osmotrophs in this deep-water community context has not been addressed. We reconstructed flow-velocity profiles and vertical mixing using canopy flow models appropriate to the densities of the observed communities. Further modeling of processes at organismal surfaces documents increasing uptake with height in the community as a function of thinning of the diffusive boundary layer with increased velocity. The velocity profile, produced by canopy flow in the community, generates this advantage of upward growth. Alternative models of upward growth advantage based on redox/resource gradients fail, given the efficiency of vertical mixing. In benthic communities of osmotrophs of sufficient density, access to flow in low-flow settings provides an advantage to taller architecture, providing a selectional driver for communities of tall eukaryotes in contexts where phototropism cannot contribute to upward growth. These Ediacaran deep-sea fossils were preserved during the increasing oxygenation prior to the Cambrian radiation of animals and likely represent an important phase in the ecological and evolutionary transition to more complex eukaryotic forms.

Abstract

Natural reefs (coral or rocky) protect a substantial length of the world's coastlines from coastal flooding and erosion through the attenuation of incident surface wave energy. Artificial reef structures can be designed to provide similar levels of coastal protection to natural reefs, as well as other engineered structures (e.g., breakwaters), while also creating new habitat for marine organisms and offering other beneficial ecosystem services. A detailed physical modelling study was conducted to investigate wave transformation over porous artificial reef structures using arrays of 1:5.8 scaled reef modules (MMA Offshore Limited Bombora reef modules) in a 54 m long and 1.5 m wide wave flume at the University of Western Australia Coastal and Offshore Engineering Laboratory. Wave heights, velocities and force time series were measured across the reef to quantify the attenuation of wave energy by dissipation (by wave breaking and drag forces) and reflection, and its variation over a range of incident wave conditions, water levels and reef layouts (varying reef widths, module porosity, number of modules and module row spacing). Using the force time series and wave attenuation measurements, an approach is developed to isolate how wave dissipation is partitioned between wave breaking and drag force contributions. From these results, predictive tools are developed to quantify the performance of given reef layouts and outline how to optimise different wave attenuation mechanisms. The results highlight the relative significance of wave breaking and dissipation by drag forces to wave attenuation across porous reef structures, and how the spacing between module rows within reefs can be optimised to enhance wave attenuation. Abstract

Background: Multislice computed tomography (MSCT) increased detection of solitary pulmonary nodules (SPNs), changing the management based on radiological and clinical factors. When 18-fluorine fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography combined with computed tomography ( 18 F-FDG-PET/CT) was considered for the evaluation of nodules, the maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) more than 2.5 is used frequently as a cut off for malignancy. The purpose of this study is to evaluate SUVmax PET/CT and pulmonary attenuation patterns at MSCT in patients with SPN according to morphological and pathological characteristics of the lesion. Methods: A retrospective study on 1,592 SPN patients was carried out following approval by the Italian Registry of VATS Lobectomies. Results: All patients underwent VATS lobectomy. On histologic examination, 98.1% had primary or second metachronous primary lung cancers. In addition, 10.7% presented occult lymph node metastases (pN1 or pN2) on histological examination. Nodule attenuation on CT was associated with the histology of the lesion (p= 0.030); in particular, pure ground glass opacities (pGGOs) and partially solid nodules were related to adenocarcinomatous histotypes. Conversely, a significant relationship between SUVmax and age, nodule size, pathological node status (pN) was found (P=0.007, P=0.000 and P=0.002 respectively). Conclusions: Nodule attenuation can predict the histology of the lesion whereas SUVmax may relate to the propensity to lymph node metastases.
