In recent decades, the fish stocks have been increasingly depleted, due mainly to the overfishing and illegal fishing. The perception of excessive fishing capacity led in the early 2000s to a review of the Common Fisheries Policy and the approval of regulations aimed at recovering depleted fish stocks and achieving greater sustainability in the sector. At the same time, the environmental awareness of consumers has grown, resulting in a greater attention towards sustainable products. Despite the new trend in consumption, few scholars have so far focused on consumer habits of sustainable fish products (Kirby and Ward, 2014; Asche et al., 2015; Asche and Bronnmann, 2017). To fill this gap, the aim of this study is to explore the main factors affecting the intention of consumers to choice sustainable fish products.METHODOLOGYTo achieve this purpose, a questionnaire was developed based on previous empirical studies on this topic (Grunert et al., 2011; Panda et al., 2020; Kiluchi-Uehara et al., 2016) and conveyed through the main social networks. The survey was carried out in Italy and Spain, two of the most important EU fish producers countries (EUMOFA, 2020), during the period January-February 2020. At the end of the survey, we obtained 324 complete questionnaires, with reference to the Italian market, and 289 for the Spanish one. The data obtained concerned information on the frequency of fish consumption, quality attributes of the purchased products, the values and beliefs of consumers, as well as their socioeconomic characteristics. Then, we performed two Probit regression models, respectively for the Italian and Spanish samples, in order to identify the main factors affecting the intention of consumers to choose sustainable fish products.RESULTSResults reveal a greater willingness of Italian consumers (82.1% of the respondents) to choose sustainable fish products, than Spanish consumers (69.2%). Furthermore, the research suggests that those who claim to have strong values of environmental protection and those who are sensitive to altruistic values are more likely to choose seafood produced in a sustainable way. Similarly, the importance associated to the presence of eco-labels on purchased fish products affects positively the intention of consumers to make seafood choices more sustainable. With reference to the socio-economic variables, younger consumers show a greater probability to choose sustainable fish products.CONCLUSIONSThe paper presents interesting evidence on the intention of the consumers to commit themselves to make seafood choices more sustainable, showing the main factors affecting this behaviour. Furthermore, the results of the study provide practical implications. On the one hand, the work suggests new insights for entrepreneurs and fish industry operators to define their marketing plans based on the characteristics of consumers. On the other hand, findings provide to policy makers hints for defining awareness campaigns among the population, aimed to increase sustainable purchasing choices by consumers. Despite this, the research is not without limitations, due to the online sampling method, which does not provide a representative sample of the investigated populations. For this reason, future research could extend the investigation to a wider audience and other European countries.

This study analyses the impact of third-party voluntary certifications on the asset of wineries operating in the Southern Italian regions. The study carried out both quantitative and qualitative approaches, with data extracted from the AIDA Bureau van Dijk International Database (including performance indicators). The analysed sector belongs to 11.02 ‘Manufacture of wine from grape’ of the Statistical classification of economic activities in the European Community (NACE). The econometric elaboration (regression) was carried out by means of STATA software 14. Comparing certified and no certified wineries, results show a better asset performance of certified wineries, confirmed by a positive relationship between higher revenues and bigger size. The adoption of voluntary certifications requires the presence of highly qualified people, capable of managing innovations of product or process. Wine managers should consider that the expected impacts of the adoption of voluntary certification are not independent from both targeted business scopes and institutional context where the winery operates, being strictly linked to specific market and seller strategic decisions, including customer centricity approaches. For what in our knowledge, this work is the first attempt in investigating the impact of voluntary certifications in the Sicilian wine industries. Results are thus of relevant importance and originality and able to suggest new insights on business assets management for the wine industry, enabling managers to better approach the decision to get certified through sustainable standards.

Quality and environmental management systems have become prominent business strategic tools to address social and environmental problems. Several voluntary certification schemes have been developed in various economic sectors, as well as in the food one. Nevertheless, it remains unclear if a positive business profitability exists as a consequence of their adoption. Aims of this work was to compare two specific groups of firms operating in the wine industry, certified and non certified ones, in order to verify the existence of a positive impact directly belonging to the adoption of environmental and food safety proactive approaches. To this scope, a sample of 173 cellars located in the Southern Regions of Italy has been considered. Our findings demonstrate how the adoption of voluntary certifications positively influence some of the profitability ratios of firms. Moreover, a linkage of such profitability with firm size, leading to an interpretation mainly focused on specific trade channels managerial choices. This work suggests interesting inputs for academics as well as for wine managers, highlighting an environmental pro-active input typical of internationalization and trade channels strategies and policies in enabling not only the market diffusion of such kind of green tools but also the achievement of targeted positive profitability ratios. © 2016, SRAC - Societatea Romana Pentru Asigurarea Calitatii. Purpose This study aims to explore and describe the main enabling factors affecting the implementation of blockchain technology (BCT) in a strategic sector such as the wine industry, as well as the motivation behind this choice. Design/methodology/approach In light of the novelty of the phenomenon studied, a case study approach was adopted analyzing three Italian wineries. A conceptual framework, based on the dynamic capabilities, absorptive capacity and dominant logic theories, was developed. Primary and secondary data were collected. Findings Results show that wineries working in a highly dynamic and competitive market invest more in knowledge acquisition and internal assimilation and less in transformation and exploitation of acquired knowledge, in particular preferring to outsource the application phase of BCT. The particularity of the wine industry, indeed, demonstrates the existence of hybrid alternatives in which exploration and exploitation processes can be balanced. These findings confirm the value of the conceptual framework developed to explain how wineries implement BCT in their business. Research limitations/implications The present work must be considered in light of the research scope and its qualitative nature. Practical implications Findings suggest that the adoption of BCT depends on the wineries’ ability to invest more in effective knowledge management systems to acquire and assimilate knowledge internally and in managerial skills and dominant logic that become strategic resources that can improve their innovation performance. Originality/value Compared to previous studies on BCT adoption in the wine industry, this work helps us to better understand how wineries implement BCT as it focuses on their ability to acquire, manage and capitalize on the flow of knowledge, as a strategic resource, which forms the basis for creating dynamic capabilities and value. Findings are of interest to develop strategies aimed to ensure the effectiveness of this innovation in a strategic sector.

PurposeThis systematic review aims to investigate how geographical cues affect wine consumers' behaviors, with reference to the New and Old Worlds, and accordingly, how are recent consumption patterns and new consumer profiles modifying roles of geographical cues?Design/methodology/approachThis work employed a systematic literature review methodology on the extant literature published from 2009 to 2019.FindingsResults, summarized in a conceptual framework, emphasize five thematic areas on how geographical cues should be considered for future research and for new marketing strategies to capture consumers of New and Old World wines. Consumers' wine knowledge, socio-ethno-demographic factors, consumption settings, labeling strategies and the use of medals and awards on labels emerged as relevant factors to deal with consumer's risk-reduction strategies.Research limitations/implicationsThe main limit is the adoption of a systematic review method.Practical implicationsResults suggest that wine managers should invest in acquiring more knowledge about consumers' profiles in both Worlds for their marketing campaigns, labeling and advertisement strategies. Although geographical cues are considered relevant in consumers' buying decisions, extrinsic cues are also increasingly acceptable, and there should be more investment in publicizing geographical attributes around the world.Originality/valueThis is the first review focusing exclusively on the role of geographical cues on consumer's behavior toward New and Old World wine producers.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore how a food and beverage packaging company manages internal and external stakeholders to achieve sustainable innovation outcomes, as well as to contribute to the spread of sustainability paths along the supply chain, on which it operates. Design/methodology/approach A case study approach was chosen and applied multiple methods of semi-structured interviews and a documentation review. Findings Results reveal a structured stakeholder relationship management, according to which the packaging company acts through a stakeholder engagement process to both acquire and share new knowledge to address stakeholder pressure. Co-creation models result in a winning strategy to exploit knowledge, above all in a supply chain context, where actors should act as a part of a strictly interlinked system, involving external stakeholders (also suppliers) and internal stakeholders in joint eco-innovation projects. The case study shows the potential strategic role of a packaging company in affecting relevant actors of the supply chain through the promotion of a sustainability culture. Research limitations/implications The first limitation is linked to the chosen case study approach, which does not allow for results to be generalized. Future works could arrange panel data analysis to investigate in depth the behavior of several packaging companies regarding stakeholder relationship management. Practical implications Managerial implications mainly underline that, to fully address market stakeholder pressure, managers should recognize the relevance of acquiring and sharing new knowledge from external sources, without underestimating the need to integrate it with internal stakeholders (employees) for its exploitation. Originality/value The present work is original for the food and beverage industry, with specific attention on the packaging sector, which, until today, has been widely investigated regarding food and waste loss reduction strategies, but less often from the perspective of stakeholder relationship management in addressing sustainability.

R&D teams' internationalization attracts interests from different research-streams. However, the decision on what type of R&D structure is more convenient to invest in may differ, based on several factors, such as risk-taking propensity and internal resource availability. With an aim to enrich the extant literature and to provide practical insights for managers working in the wine industry, this case study explores the determinants of an Italian family-owned winery that attempts to keep a balance between its internal and external R&D teams' decision, using an integrated theoretical framework based on the transaction costs and the resource-based view theory. The optimal R&D solution based on an accurate costs vs benefits analysis leads the firm to hire highly qualified staff to manage its internal R&D unit, as well as to complement the unit with complementary resource that can be accessed through external R&D knowledge sources.

Researchers, environmentalists, as well as fisheries and retailers, have been focusing their attention on the design, use and effects that fish ecolabels have on sustainability. The fish processing industry and large retailers have rapidly adopted several market-based standards, with consequences for two major stakeholders: fishermen and consumers. Although the standards have shown rather positive results, from the perspectives of marine biodiversity conservation, the fish industry and trade, it is not clear how they are able to support a change in people’s awareness about sustainability. For this reason, the present work reviews and analyses the literature, produced in the last ten years, regarding two international, private and voluntary ecolabels in the fish industry: FOS and MSC. The results confirm the relevant role these ecolabels are playing in promoting awareness about sustainable fish, describing the terms of this ongoing change and also proposing new insights from the literature to further reinforce this process. In particular, a multi-stakeholder approach is suggested for the production side so as to better exploit the sustainable potential of the system inaugurated by the ecolabel, while, for the consumption side to further spread knowledge about marine stock status and ecolabels’ meaning and scope, which would accelerate the ongoing process.

Since the adoption of the EU Directive, 2001/77/EC, the production of electricity from renewable energy sources has progressed. Apart from the indicative target proposed by the Directive, actually no other tools of policy monitoring exist. To fill this gap, we propose a dynamic method able to capture this multidimensional phenomenon, providing an assessment tool to measure the technical efficiency performances of EU countries in the photovoltaic sector (1996–2010). Results show how technical efficiencies of countries are, from one hand, due to problems belonging to the economic and political contexts in which they operate, on the other hand driven by specific political support schemes adopted. By taking into consideration the EU interest for a common system focused on a harmonized support schemes framework, our findings suggest the necessity of a further strengthening on the monitoring tools to be used, in order to suitably assess the different faces of the political arrangements that need to be considered to this scope.

Over the past few years, public attention has focused on the quality and safety control, traceability, and environmental issues surrounding food products. Several mandatory public standards and private voluntary schemes worldwide have been developed to address these concerns. Using survey data, this paper analyses the key factors affecting the adoption of voluntary quality standards in the wine industry and the existence of a relationship between the adoption of voluntary quality standards and economic performance, measured in terms of labour productivity and marketing behaviour. The survey involved 89 cellars, of which 68 were non-certified and 21 had one or more food quality certifications. Using the data collected, an index based on Euclidean distances was constructed to compare economic performance between certified and non-certified firms. The findings provide evidence that internal motivations drive entrepreneurs to adopt voluntary standards and that wineries adopting voluntary standards exhibit better economic performance than non-certified wine firms. From a managerial viewpoint, these results suggest that although the adoption of voluntary quality certifications does not have a direct effect in terms of a labour productivity increase, it entails a business management improvement. For policymakers, the results suggest a need to develop policies and establish more stable financial assistance for the internationalisation of wine firms, thereby supporting them through this transition.

This study examines the evolution in development of Intra-European Union agri-food export during the period 2000–2011. By using Data Envelopment Window Analysis, this paper at first provides a more comprehensive picture on agri-food trade performance of sampled New Member States, focusing the attention on the pre and post phase of the enlargement process. Two specific country case studies will be released, revealing different patterns of performance among New EU Member States. The majority of New EU Member States differed in their approach in benefiting from the opportunity to enter into the EU enlarged market, and some of theme preferred to strengthen established trade relations with a past group of partner countries. In the future, the increase in the export flows of quality products together with the ability to enter new end-markets within the EU will largely depend on the agri-food sector units’ abilities to efficiently compete and sustain competitiveness in the European and global markets. The overall performance could be improved by strengthening the quality side of exported goods, to better comply with EU quality standards and to acquire a more competitive advantage in the single market.

Nelle sue opere Giuseppe Pitrè dedica ampio spazio alla documentazione storica in funzione della comprensione delle forme del presente etnografico, non mancando di ipotizzare certe relazioni tra antico e presente e giungendo anche a considerare le espressioni religiose pre-cristiane ( come orizzonte di riferimento privilegiato per comprendere e spiegare le forme, quando non gli stessi significati e funzioni, delle pratiche e delle credenze “popolari”. Nell’istituire tali collegamenti col più remoto passato, Pitrè riprende le idee, nel suo tempo di grande fortuna, diffuse dalla “scuola mitologica” e da quella “evoluzionista”. Nelle pagine di Pitrè, osserva Cocchiara, «corre insistente una premessa: che le tradizioni siciliane sono l’eco di antiche civiltà, monumenti archeologici del pensiero, reliquie del passato». Il mondo “pagano”, precisa Cocchiara, «gli si rivela soprattutto quand’egli affronta le tradizioni oggettive.

Il materiale linguistico dei testi popolari raccolti da Pitrè è materia viva. I suoi narratori sono parlanti reali, radicati nelle rispettive comunità delle quali ripropongono i tratti linguistici – nella loro specificità e autenticità – che lo studioso deve saper cogliere e rappresentare “immediatamente”. Ma, raccogliendo e trascrivendo i testi di "Fiabe novelle e racconti popolari siciliani", Pitrè, più che con «la parola», si trova a operare con “il parlato”. Operando, dunque, sul piano “etnotestuale”, il suo materiale linguistico, assimilabile, per certi versi, a un corpus di parlato spontaneo, postula di essere osservato e rappresentato dalla prospettiva "sintattica" e non soltanto da quella strettamente "lessicale" (come nel caso dei lessicografi). La necessità di rappresentare le varie caratteristiche fonetico-fonologiche e sintattiche dei diversi dialetti dei "Racconti", induce il demologo ad andare al di là di un modello dialettale astratto e koineizzante, di superare, cioè, quello che egli definisce «dialetto in generale» per confrontarsi con le «parlate in particolare». E poiché l’ancoraggio delle differenze linguistiche ai singoli dialetti in cui sono narrate le novelle, le fiabe e i racconti è ancoraggio ai luoghi in cui quei dialetti sono parlati, la variabilità linguistica con cui Pitrè si confronta – sia sul piano metalinguistico e che su quello “operativo” – è di ordine essenzialmente diatopico. La sua riflessione sulla variabilità fa sì che lo studioso palermitano possa ben essere considerato un pioniere della varietistica. E, inoltre, se, come è vero, la sua opera, di descrizione (nella "Grammatica") e "fomalizzazione" (nelle trascrizioni delle "Fiabe") della variabilità diatopica siciliana resta altamente innovativa rispetto alla tradizione (come Osserva A. Varvaro, «i glottologi si erano spesso serviti dei materiali raccolti dai flolcloristi, ma era assai vero il contrario»), Pitrè offre anche una delle più importanti lezioni della dialettologia novecentesca, quella per la quale cultura tradizionale e cultura dialettale non possono e non devono essere disgiunte.

This paper analyses the evolution of sustainable economic development inequality in Italy as regards the efforts made by each administrative Region, as a response to the main EU policies issued by the environmental and energy sector. For this purpose a multidimensional generalization of the Gini index has been performed, taking into account two different dimensions (energy and environment), in a time frame of six years (2008-2013). The multidimensional Gini results confirm the positive effect recorded by certain EU policies in determining a reduction in the inequality levels among the Italian Regions. A counterfactual analysis further underlined the relevant role played by the energetic dimension against the environmental one in strengthening Regional performances

L'articolo guarda alle dinamiche della femminilizzazione delle migrazioni analizzate dalla principale letteratura sul tema per come esse si declinano nel contesto siciliano contemporaneo. la difficoltà di pervenire a una effettiva "integrazione" delle donne in Sicilia è narrata a partire dalla critica dello stesso concetto di "integrazione" e attraverso da una serie di interviste in profondità che analizzano la condizione di donne migranti con storie e provenienze molto differenti tra loro. Le interviste sono state raccolte nelle Provincie di Palermo e di Ragusa.

This paper investigates the role of the Friend of the Sea (FOS) scheme as a market tool for sustainable competitive advantage. To capture this effect, we apply a theoretical framework based on the stakeholder theory (SHT) and the natural-resource-based view (NRBV) to two case studies each in Italy and Spain. Our model allows us to explain the main factors determining an effective and competitive sustainable business model in the fishery sector. The results confirm the relevant influence of market forces in acquiring FOS certification and the role of the same as a counterpart to state authority.

During the last three decades, the European Union (EU) commitment towards the Renewable Energy Sources (RES) market penetration has been very complex, involving several aspects pertaining to the economic and political action of Member States. This paper seeks to overview the historical development of the legislative EU framework, including a description of the main financial programmes established and managed by the EU Directorates General. Moreover, the work will proceed with the picture of some Investment Funds, ad hoc created for RES undertakings, and managed by the European Investment Bank (EIB) in collaboration with the EU or other foreign Bank Institutes. The delicate matter of State aid is discussed, paying particular attention to the transition from 1999 to the recent EU Guidelines (2014/2020), as these wider scopes could lead to an effective and well functioning European Energy Single Market. Focusing the attention on three case-studies, we have produced final remarks on the correct functioning of the EU political framework, giving attention to important improvements needed at infrastructural level. The EU awareness of the power grid limits, that are currently recorded in Europe has lead to further reforms of the legislation, as shown by the new EU Guidelines that will probably support Member States in dealing with the infrastructure challenge.

In the last few decades an increasing emphasis of public and private organization on quality and safety control, on traceability of food products and on environmental issues, has been registered. Mandatory public standards and private voluntary today drive this process in order to assure food safety and traceability standards. The aim of this work is to analyze the main reasons that drives some Sicilian wineries in the adoption of quality voluntary standards, and comparing their economic attitudes and performance with those firms not certified. Results show a very similar performance patterns among the two groups of firms, highlighting a series of differences that are not directly attributable to the possession, or not, of certifications, but on the opening level together with structured net of sale agents. This findings suggests that it should be necessary to segment the overall firm turnover in order to find any possible effect. This results are justified by the specificities of the wine sector.

In questo contributo, muovendo dalla storia del pensiero sociologico, all’interno della quale il concetto di integrazione – declinato anche con espressioni quali ‘ordine sociale’, ‘solidarietà sociale’, ‘inclusione’ e ‘coesione sociale’ – ha un posto centrale ed una lunga vicenda, cercheremo di rifl ettere criticamente su di esso e sulle sue implicazioni. Il nostro obiettivo è far comprendere l’importanza di tenere in considerazione la storicità di questo concetto, che spesso diamo per scontata o non consideriamo affatto; sottolineare il ruolo che le scienze sociali e la sociologia hanno avuto nel determinare, e reiterare, un’idea di integrazione prevalentemente basata sulla nozione di ordine sociale ed evidenziare la necessità di rifl ettere, dunque, sui criteri epistemologici che la stessa sociologia utilizza; mostrare che siamo davanti ad una dimensione talmente problematica, e subordinata alla variabilità storica, per cui il concetto di integrazione dovrebbe essere problematizzato rispetto all’uso scontato che se ne fa nella società contemporanea, soprattutto ad opera dei media tradizionali, dei new media e, attraverso questi, del senso comune; fornire, infine, strumenti critici che consentano di andare oltre i luoghi comuni e le paure diffuse relativamente alla convivenza tra autoctoni e immigrati. Infine, anche attraverso questo lavoro di disamina storica, cercheremo di mettere in discussione il concetto stesso di integrazione, attraverso il quale si dà per ovvio il fatto che la società sia già integrata al suo interno. La sociologia, infatti, nel suo sviluppo storico, ha fornito molte volte uno stabile fondamento a questa idea dell’integrazione, prescindendo dalla storicità dei suoi oggetti di analisi e provando a rendere universali e astratti, come se fossero astorici, alcuni concetti e categorie, spesso attribuendovi, come nel caso della defi nizione di società in Durkheim ad esempio, qualità superiori e avulse dagli individui che li pongono in essere. Ciò ha contribuito a diffondere l’idea, nel senso comune e nell’opinione pubblica, che alcuni processi sociali abbiano delle regolarità simili ai processi naturali, deresponsabilizzando in tal maniera il ruolo stesso che gli individui hanno – o potrebbero avere – per la costruzione di altre forme di legame sociale e di mutamento sociale. Il risultato è quello di pensare alla società come se fosse dotata di una sua identità chiusa, circondata da stabili confi ni, anziché come l’esito di relazioni o di libere associazioni di individui, per quanto composite, conflittuali e problematiche.

Our work aim is to produce an overview of food irradiation technology at European Union level, with a focus on the Italian context, by specifying the legislative background, detection methods and labelling obligations. We highlight how consumers are too often misinformed about this technology and its benefits. For this purpose, a series of tools aimed at improving the amount of information have been proposed, allowing the consumer to make a free choice about whether or not to buy irradiated food based on the correct information received, independent from socio-economic factors. Finally, we show the common effort at EU and International level, represented by the ISO 14470:2011 quality standard.

This paper, based on transaction costs theory, represents a contribution to the existing literature, and a first step towards a more in depth study, aimed to identify the more important transaction costs able to influence the strategic choices of firms. In particular, this approach has been used to evaluate, through a telephone survey, the influence of transaction costs on the sale channels choice made by a small sample of Sicilian firms active in the Ornamental Plants economic sub-sector. Results show that transaction costs increase moving from direct sale to the sale to wholesalers and large scale retail (LSR) channels, confirming our starting hypothesis. In particular, information and negotiation costs are higher for those firms that sell to intermediaries and/or LSR. For this last channel results show the relevance of monitoring costs too. Our results have implications on the organizational model of firms and on the opportunity that a cooperative model is able to offer also in this economic sub-sector.

The European Union (EU) has been committed to promoting Renewable Energy Sources (RES) since 1985, focusing its attention on the financial coordination needed to support the sector, and the possibility of harmonizing support scheme systems. Starting from this assumption, the aim of this study is to provide, by means of STATIS together with windows DEA analysis, a response about which kind of support schemes have worked best in a sample of 11 EU Member States over the last 15 years in terms of Photovoltaic overall installed capacity, the most expensive RES technology.

Il saggio esplora le dinamiche di subalternità/intimità che si definiscono nelle relazioni di cura fra anziani e badanti. Attraverso un novero di interviste a testimoni significativi, l'autrice approfondisce i nessi che circoscrivono l'asimmetria di potere, costitutiva di ogni rapporto subordinato, e la differenza di status sociale, sullosfondo di un più generale senso di intimità personale che si contestualizza – parafrasando un noto libro di C.E. Gadda ‒ nella “cognizione del dolore” di cui la famiglia del soggetto bisognoso di cure al pari della badante, ha consapevolezza.

L'immigrazione e la eterogeneità etnica e razziale rappresentano un fenomeno tipico dell'era contemporanea con il quale le società devono fare i conti molto seriamente. Il confronto culturale e politico su questa tematica è molto facilmente esposto alla emotività, alle strumentalizzazioni e alle paure. D'altra parte una politica di integrazione richiede una forte consapevolezza dei problemi generati dalla eterogeneità etnica e razziale sulla coesione sociale attuale. Per orientare la politica alla costruzione di una società capace di accoglienza e costruita su forme di identità e di solidarietà aperte e più ampie è necessario creare oggi le condizioni perché l'immigrazione e l'eterogeneità etnica e razziale non generino conflitti. Le ricerche che abbiamo esaminato mostrano chiaramente che laddove aumenta la varietà della composizione culturale di una popolazione, si riduce la fiducia delle persone e dunque la disponibilità a cooperare e partecipare. Abbiamo però anche visto che se l'incremento della eterogeneità etnica avviene in un clima valoriale e normativo orientato positivamente verso l'immigrazione e la posizione lavorativa e sociale degli immigrati non è condizionata dall'essere immigrato ma dal titolo di studio e dalle sue capacità allora non ci sarà alcun effetto sulla fiducia, sulla disponibilità a cooperare e dunque sul capitale sociale complessivo.

Aim of this work is, firstly, to produce a synthetic indicator able to identify the main factors that allowed the Photovoltaic (“PV” since now) diffusion from 1996 (PV wide diffusion starting date) to 2010, in 14 selected countries (on the basis of the best performance at EU level, showed by the time series considered) and, secondly, we want to evaluate the technical efficiency of these countries in terms of efficient resources utilization and cost efficiency. For this scope a two steps analysis is performed. In the first step, by using the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) technique, we will identify specific weights of the variables considered for each year, and the roles (in terms of weight) played, by each of them, yearly. In the second step, by using a DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) model, we will calculate the efficiency scores of 14 EU Member States (EU codes: AT, BE, BG, CZ, DK, FI, FR, DE, EL, IT, NL, ES, SE, and UK). In the first step, we will consider a set of 20 indicators concerning the diffusion of PV, from those concerning the usual electricity demand level/sources, to specific indicators concerning the solar irradiation intensity, modules costs, PV market growth and government financial support schemes. Expected results of the work are, firstly, a detailed analysis able to explain the evolution trend in 14 EU countries (the best performers in the EU PV sector); second, the production of a synthetic indicator able to identify the main variables that allowed the PV diffusion during the years considered; third, a detailed overview on EU solar energy supporting schemes implemented by the 14 EU countries; finally, using the scores of efficiency, the production of a useful tool to be used to measure the attractiveness of PV investments within each EU country considered. Moreover, our work foresees the achievement of important socio-economic impacts: from the role played by the PV sector to produce new job opportunities, to the improvement of attractiveness of Foreigner Direct Investments above all in those sunrich EU countries. Strictly connected to this last point, is the discussion concerning the role of convergence regions (and structural funds available for them) and the related strategic use of structural funds towards the PV’s goals. As a consequence of the heavy worldwide economic crisis, several EU countries are implementing spending review procedures; in this context we put our work, by informing policy makers about the economic potential of PV deployment as well as the government funding schemes role. A final consideration concerns the need to work towards a graduated match between PV labour demand and PV labour supply that, actually, results far to be reached: secondary schools and Universities are invited to play an active role in bridging the gap. Finally, the results reached with this work will fit with 2 of 7 EU 2020 flagships: from one hand, with the flagship an “Agenda for new skills and jobs” by equipping people with the right skills for the jobs of today and tomorrow and, from the other hand, with the flagship “Resource Efficient Europe”.

The process of market globalization has led to a redefinition of business models in order to compete in domestic and international markets. In the current competitive scenario, the survival of companies is linked to their ability to reduce or contain the sum of both production and transaction costs. The aim of this paper is to identify the existence of similar organizational models of a sample of Sicilian firms active in the Ornamental Plants sector based on those transaction costs that they support in relation to the sales channel and the other human and firm characteristics. Using a clustering procedure, we identified four well-distinct organizational models whose formation is influenced not only by the physical and economic size of firms but also by the transaction costs experimented. A reconsideration of these models, both in cooperatives and in small firms managed by young entrepreneurs, is needed.
