Abstract

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is the second most common cause of early-onset dementia after Alzheimer disease (AD). Efforts in the field mainly focus on familial forms of disease (fFTDs), while studies of the genetic etiology of sporadic FTD (sFTD) have been less common. In the current work, we analyzed 4,685 sFTD cases and 15,308 controls looking for common genetic determinants for sFTD. We found a cluster of variants at the MAPT (rs199443; p = 2.5 × 10-12, OR = 1.27) and APOE (rs6857; p = 1.31 × 10-12, OR = 1.27) loci and a candidate locus on chromosome 3 (rs1009966; p = 2.41 × 10-8, OR = 1.16) in the intergenic region between RPSA and MOBP, contributing to increased risk for sFTD through effects on expression and/or splicing in brain cortex of functionally relevant in-cis genes at the MAPT and RPSA-MOBP loci. The association with the MAPT (H1c clade) and RPSA-MOBP loci may suggest common genetic pleiotropy across FTD and progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) (MAPT and RPSA-MOBP loci) and across FTD, AD, Parkinson disease (PD), and cortico-basal degeneration (CBD) (MAPT locus). Our data also suggest population specificity of the risk signals, with MAPT and APOE loci associations mainly driven by Central/Nordic and Mediterranean Europeans, respectively. This study lays the foundations for future work aimed at further characterizing population-specific features of potential FTD-discriminant APOE haplotype(s) and the functional involvement and contribution of the MAPT H1c haplotype and RPSA-MOBP loci to pathogenesis of sporadic forms of FTD in brain cortex.

We provide a new proof of S. Bellenot's characterization of the extreme points of the unit ball $B_J$ of James quasi-reflexive space $J$. We also provide an explicit description of the norm of $J^{**}$ which yields an analogous characterization for the extreme points of $B_{J^{**}}$. In the last part of the paper we describe the set of all extreme points of $B_{J^*}$ and its norm closure. Abstract

Pushing tasks performed by aerial manipulators can be used for contact-based industrial inspections. Underactuated aerial vehicles are widely employed in aerial manipulation due to their widespread availability and relatively low cost. Industrial infrastructures often consist of diverse oriented work surfaces. When interacting with such surfaces, the coupled gravity compensation and interaction force generation of underactuated aerial vehicles can present the potential challenge of near-saturation operations. The blind utilization of these platforms for such tasks can lead to instability and accidents, creating unsafe operating conditions and potentially damaging the platform. In order to ensure safe pushing on these surfaces while managing platform saturation, this work establishes a safety assessment process. This process involves the prediction of the saturation level of each actuator during pushing across variable surface orientations. Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have seen widespread adoption by organizations seeking to identify and hire high-quality job applicants. Yet the volume, variety, and velocity of professional involvement among I-O psychologists remains relatively limited when it comes to developing and evaluating AI/ML applications for talent assessment and selection. Furthermore, there is a paucity of empirical research that investigates the reliability, validity, and fairness of AI/ML tools in organizational contexts. To stimulate future involvement and research, we share our review and perspective on the current state of AI/ML in talent assessment as well as its benefits and potential pitfalls; and in addressing the issue of fairness, we present experimental evidence regarding the potential for AI/ML to evoke adverse reactions from job applicants during selection procedures. We close by emphasizing increased collaboration among I-O psychologists, computer scientists, legal scholars, and members of other professional disciplines in developing, implementing, and evaluating AI/ML applications in organizational contexts.

Abstract

We present an analysis of Sun-as-a-star observations from four different high-resolution, stabilized spectrographs -- HARPS, HARPS-N, EXPRES, and NEID. With simultaneous observations of the Sun from four different instruments, we are able to gain insight into the radial velocity precision and accuracy delivered by each of these instruments and isolate instrumental systematics that differ from true astrophysical signals. With solar observations, we can completely characterize the expected Doppler shift contributed by orbiting Solar System bodies and remove them. This results in a data set with measured velocity variations that purely trace flows on the solar surface. Direct comparisons of the radial velocities measured by each instrument show remarkable agreement with residual intra-day scatter of only 15-30 cm/s. This shows that current ultra-stabilized instruments have broken through to a new level of measurement precision that reveals stellar variability with high fidelity and detail. We end by discussing how radial velocities from different instruments can be combined to provide powerful leverage for testing techniques to mitigate stellar signals., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication

The disjointly non-singular ($DNS$) operators $T\in L(E,Y)$ from a Banach lattice $E$ to a Banach space $Y$ are those operators which are strictly singular in no closed subspace generated by a disjoint sequence of non-zero vectors. When $E$ is order continuous with a weak unit, $E$ can be represented as a dense ideal in some $L_1(\mu)$ space, and we show that each of $T\in DNS(E,Y)$ admits an extension $\overline{T}\in DNS(L_1(\mu),PO)$ from which we derive that both $T$ and $T^{**}$ are tauberian operators and that the operator $T^{co}: E^{**}/E\to Y^{**}/Y$ induced by $T^{**}$ is an (into) isomorphism. Also, using a local variation of the notion of $DNS$ operator, we show that the ultrapowers of $T\in DNS(E,Y)$ are also $DNS$ operators. Abstract

The Athena X-ray Integral Unit (X-IFU) is the high resolution X-ray spectrometer, studied since 2015 for flying in the mid-30s on the Athena space X-ray Observatory, a versatile observatory designed to address the Hot and Energetic Universe science theme, selected in November 2013 by the Survey Science Committee. Based on a large format array of Transition Edge Sensors (TES), it aims to provide spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopy, with a spectral resolution of 2.5 eV (up to 7 keV) over an hexagonal field of view of 5 arc minutes (equivalent diameter). The X-IFU entered its System Requirement Review (SRR) in June 2022, at about the same time when ESA called for an overall X-IFU redesign (including the X-IFU cryostat and the cooling chain), due to an unanticipated cost overrun of Athena. In this paper, after illustrating the breakthrough capabilities of the X-IFU, we describe the instrument as presented at its SRR, browsing through all the subsystems and associated requirements. We then show the instrument budgets, with a particular emphasis on the anticipated budgets of some of its key performance parameters. Finally we briefly discuss on the ongoing key technology demonstration activities, the calibration and the activities foreseen in the X-IFU Instrument Science Center, and touch on communication and outreach activities, the consortium organisation, and finally on the life cycle assessment of X-IFU aiming at minimising the environmental footprint, associated with the development of the instrument. Thanks to the studies conducted so far on X-IFU, it is expected that along the design-to-cost exercise requested by ESA, the X-IFU will maintain flagship capabilities in spatially resolved high resolution X-ray spectroscopy, enabling most of the original X-IFU related scientific objectives of the Athena mission to be retained. Abstract

We study operators on the Kalton-Peck Banach space $Z_2$ from various points of view: matrix representations, examples, spectral properties and operator ideals. For example, we prove that there are non-compact, strictly singular operators acting on $Z_2$, but the product of two of them is a compact operator. Among applications, we show that every copy of $Z_2$ in $Z_2$ is complemented, and each semi-Fredholm operator on $Z_2$ has complemented kernel and range, the space $Z_2$ is $Z_2$-automorphic and we give a partial solution to a problem of Johnson, Lindenstrauss and Schetchman about strictly singular perturbations of operators on $Z_2$.

Abstract

Context.--Pseudocarcinomatous urothelial hyperplasia (PCUH) architecturally and cytologically mimics cancer. The urine cytology features of PCUH have not been described. Objective.--To describe PCUH features in urine cytology. Design.--We reviewed urine cytology cases with concurrent PCUH tissue specimens from 5 academic institutions and classified them by using The Paris System criteria. Results.--Thirty-nine patients included 31 men and 8 women with a mean age of 67 years (range, 39-87 years). All patients had prior pelvic irradiation, and most presented with hematuria (n = 27). The specimens included voided urine (n = 16); bladder washing (n = 11); and urine, not otherwise specified (n = 12). The specimen preparation included cytospin (n = 29) and ThinPrep (n = 10). Original interpretations were negative for high-grade urothelial carcinoma (n = 28), atypical urothelial cells (AUCs; n = 10), and high-grade urothelial carcinoma (HGUC; n = 1). Twenty-five urine specimens (64%) had findings of PCUH. These specimens were moderately cellular and composed of sheets, cohesive groups, or isolated urothelial cells. Nucleoli were present in 23 cases. The nuclear membrane was smooth to irregular (n = 9), smooth (n = 8), and irregular (n = 8). The chromatin was glassy (n = 8), vesicular (n = 7), hyperchromatic (n = 7), and vesicular to finely granular (n = 3). The cytoplasm varied from dense squamoid, to finely vacuolated, to vacuolated. Nucleomegaly was observed in all 25 specimens, and nuclearcytoplasmic ratio greater than 0.5 was seen in 11 of 25 cases (44%). The background contained acute inflammation (n = 14), was clean (n = 9), and contained red blood cells (n = 2). All cases originally interpreted as AUCs and HGUC had PCUH features. Conclusions.--PCUH urine features can overlap with AUCs, HGUC, and other nonurothelial malignancies. In our cohort, 44% (11 of 25) of urine specimens with PCUH changes were initially misclassified. Recognition of cytologic features of PCUH is important to avoid overcalling reactive changes. Abstract

In 1973, Diestel published his seminal paper `Grothendieck spaces and vector measures' that drew a connection between Grothendieck spaces (Banach spaces for which weak- and weak*-sequential convergences in the dual space coincide) and vector measures. This connection was developed in his book with J. Uhl Jr. `Vector measures'. Additionally, Diestel's paper included a section with several open problems about the structural properties of Grothendieck spaces, and only half of them have been solved to this day. The present paper aims at synthetically presenting the state of the art at subjectively selected corners of the theory of Banach spaces with the Grothendieck property, describing the main examples of spaces with this property, recording the solutions to Diestel's problems, providing generalisations/extensions or new proofs of various results concerning Grothendieck spaces, and adding to the list further problems that we believe are of relevance and may reinvigorate a better-structured development of the theory., Comment: 55 pp., accepted for publication in Japanese Journal of Mathematics

Abstract

An operator $T$ from a Banach lattice $E$ into a Banach space is disjointly non-singular ($DN$-$S$, for short) if no restriction of $T$ to a subspace generated by a disjoint sequence is strictly singular. We obtain several results for $DN$-$S$ operators, including a perturbative characterization. For $E=L_p$ ($1< p<\infty$) we improve the results, and we show that the $DN$-$S$ operators have a different behavior in the cases $p=2$ and $p\neq 2$. As an application we prove that the strongly embedded subspaces of $L_p$ form an open subset in the set of all closed subspaces.

Abstract

A closed subspace $S$ of $\ell_\infty$ is said to be a \emph{$\ell_\infty$-Grothendieck subspace} if $c_0\subset S$ (hence $\ell_\infty\subset S^{**}$) and every $\sigma(S^*,S)$-convergent sequence in $S^*$ is $\sigma(S^*,\ell_\infty)$-convergent. Here we give examples of closed subspaces of $\ell_\infty$ containing $c_0$ which are or fail to be $\ell_\infty$-Grothendieck.

Abstract

We show that the Kottman constant $K(\cdot)$, together with its symmetric and finite variations, is continuous with respect to the Kadets metric, and they are log-convex, hence continuous, with respect to the interpolation parameter in a complex interpolation schema. Moreover, we show that $K(X)\cdot K(X^*)\geqslant 2$ for every infinite-dimensional Banach space $X$. We also consider the isomorphic Kottman constant (defined as the infimum of the Kottman constants taken over all renormings of the space) and solve the main problem left open in [CaGoPa17], namely that the isomorphic Kottman constant of a twisted-sum space is the maximum of the constants of the respective summands. Consequently, the Kalton--Peck space may be renormed to have Kottman's constant arbitrarily close to $\sqrt{2}$.
