On 19 September 2021, a new monogenetic volcano (Tajogaite) erupted on the island of La Palma (Canary Islands, Spain). After 86 days of strombolian eruption, with emissions of volcanic material, a pyroclastic cone 200 m high and 800 m in diameter was formed. Successive lava flows descended the western slopes and reached the sea on 29 September. On descending the coastal cliffs and entering the sea, the lava flows formed two lava deltas of 75 and 5 ha, on the submarine island shelf, backed by fossilized coastal cliffs. This work presents an approach, using comparative and numerical methods, to estimate the geoheritage value and support the conservation of a new volcanic landscape in an island territory with high anthropic pressure on land uses. In a first phase, a cartographic inventory was made of all the volcanic formations similar to the new volcano in the geological domain of the Canary Islands. In a second phase, their representativeness (A), rarity (R), diversity (D), integrity (I) and observability (O) was quantitatively measured by means of dimensional estimators. The results obtained show that the new volcano presents a geological value of the first order in the context of the Canary Islands, which is one of the most prominent hot-spot archipelago worldwide. Its value is based above all on its high conservation state with respect to the similar volcanoes in the Canary Islands. The high mismatch found between the intrinsic geological value and the environmental protection of this area, justifies the development and application of urgent basic guidelines for its protection, as well as the promotion of geotourism as opposed to alternative land uses.

This study investigated 20 elements in the muscle of 11 cephalopod species caught in the Canary Islands inhabiting from coastal to meso-bathypelagic habitats. Among them, trace element contents from large and elusive cephalopods such as Architeuthis dux, Taningia danae, Lepidoteuthis grimaldii, and Haliphron atlanticus were determined. Statistically significant differences in element concentration were found among class sizes and habitat. Large species that are inhabiting in deepest waters such as Loligo forbesii, A. dux, T. danae, H. atlanticus, and L. grimaldii showed a high load and variability in Fe and Al, while coastal species were characterized by a homogeneous element composition, being the Zn loads highest than other elements. Metal contents in large and elusive cephalopod species were dominated by Fe, Ni, Al, Zn, and Sr, with these species being able to carry important amounts of these elements to predators such as deep-diving odontocetes that reside around the Canary waters.

Climate change causes impacts on the Earth system, negatively influencing biodiversity, habitats and ecosystems, with strong repercussions for human beings. Climate change also has a negative impact on the Geodiversity, which is perceptible on a human time scale in degradation and loss of geoheritage in volcanic islands. Thus it is urgent to develop research to evaluate the effects of climate change and its influence in geoconservation and public use in protected natural areas. It should also be noted that geoheritage is made up mainly of natural elements of a non-renewable nature, the loss of which is irreversible.During the last decades, the economy of the Canary Islands has been closely linked to the public use of its Protected Natural Areas and to the tourism activities related to them. Given the great importance of the geoheritage included into the four National Parks of Canary Islands for multiple tourism sectors and indirectly for other sectors, it is not surprising that it is a matter of concern, and of urgent need, to explore the possible responses of the geosites to the climate change scenarios that several IPCC models have simulated for the coming decades in Spain and, specifically, for the Canary Islands. In this case, where the geosites of the Canary national parks have legal protection, their conservation status is not homogeneous and some are threatened in the short and medium term, with a high risk of degradation, which makes them worthy of forming a 'Red List of geoheritage'.The most threatened geoheritage of the Canary National Parks has been identified in order to assess their vulnerability and risk of degradation due to the impacts of Climate Change. For this purpose, measures have been designed to assess the conservation status of the most threatened geosites whose evolution over time is not well known, including monitoring of active processes triggered by climate change. The use of direct and indirect mitigation measures, including public participation, have been considered to increase their resilience and adaptation.With the 'Red List' geosites, the creation of a Digital Image Bank and full-scale replicas of sedimentary structures, fossils and minerals will be implemented as a preventive conservation measure. This climate change adaptation measure for geoconservation is very innovative and fully replicable and reproducible in other national and international protected natural areas. Mercury is a very dangerous toxic metal that bioaccumulates very easily in organisms, and it migrates through the food web. The specimens studied in this study were Scomber colias. In the results obtained for the years 1973, 1992, and 2021, the concentration of mercury has been decreasing considerably over the decades, starting with 0.23 ± 0.04 mg/kg in 1973, and having less than half in 2021 with 0.11 ± 0.01 mg/kg. This may be due to the laws imposed by the countries against pollution and to a greater extent in the elimination of mercury; thanks to these measures it has been possible to reduce the concentration of mercury by half in S. colias. Otherwise, the conservation and availability of historical collections of living beings should be considered an unvalued source of information which could help to monitor legislation measures launched to ameliorate the human impact on the natural environment.

Toxic metal and trace element levels in the ocean are increasing heterogeneously in the world, which is why it is important to assess their concentrations in organisms of fishing interest. The study of metal concentrations in different fishing grounds is of vital importance for nutritional control. In this study, two fishing grounds have been studied, in the Canary Islands and in Portugal, in each area 50 muscle samples have been taken from each of the studied species, Scomber colias, Sardina pilchardus, and Trachurus species from the Canary Islands (T. picturatus) and Portuguese (T. trachurus). The concentrations of Cd, Pb, Cr, Cu, V and Zn have been analyzed in mg / kg. Cd and Pb concentrations are higher in the species from the Canary Islands and may be linked to the African upwelling inputs, which greatly influence the metal concentrations of the species. The species with the highest concentration of metals and trace elements are influenced by the anthropogenic action of coastal pollution and the natural action of African upwelling and Saharan dust. The Cd and Pb concentrations determined in the muscle tissue of S. colias, T. picturatus, T. trachurus and S. pilchardus are below the maximum permitted limits set by the current legislation, and are, therefore, suitable for human consumption. This work presents the analysis of 20 heavy metals concentrations (Al, B, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, Pb, Sr, V and Zn) in 80 muscle samples of two species widely consumed by humans, such as the European sardine (Sardina pilchardus) and the blue jack mackerel (Trachurus picturatus). Both species have similar metal concentrations, with significant differences in Ba, Ca, Ni, Pb and Mn. Most of the relations between the concentration of metals and the weight of the individuals were negative. All concentrations of toxic heavy metals were lower (than the legislated maximum limits for consumption S. pilchardus: 3.983 mg/kg Al, 0.016 mg/kg Cd, 0.047 mg/kg Pb, and T. picturatus: 5.484 mg/kg Al, 0.011 mg/kg Cd, 0.040 mg/kg Pb). One hundred and ninety-two samples from six species of mollusks classified into the following taxonomic classes: Gastropoda (Patella aspera, Patella candei crenata), Bivalvia (Mytilus galloprovincialis, Ensis directus), and Cephalopoda (Abraliposis morisii, Pyroteuthis margatifera) were investigated. Samples were collected in the Atlantic Ocean (Canary Islands and Galicia). The concentrations of Al, B, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, Pb, Sr, V, and Zn were determined by ICP-OES. Statistical analysis verified that the classes of benthic organisms had the highest concentration of elements. However, the Cephalopoda class had the highest Cd (1.685 ± 0.929 mg/kg) and Pb (0.826 ± 1.104 mg/kg) content. On the other hand, the values obtained in this study were compared with studies conducted in other parts of the world to verify the environmental state of the Atlantic Ocean using the organisms studied as bioindicators.

Currently, there is an increase in marine pollution around the world; the most affected areas are the coastal ones since on the coast is where anthropogenic pollution first acts. Therefore, it is important to have natural bioindicators as organisms that indicate us in the first instance of this pollution. The main objective of the present research is to determine if Patella aspera and Patella candei crenata show statistical differences in their element content in contaminated areas of the Island of Tenerife and to verify if limpets can be good bioindicators of marine pollution by trace elements and non-essential elements. A total of 160 limpets were taken from 4 slopes of the Island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands. The samples were analyzed using the ICP-OES to obtain results of essential trace elements (Cr, Cu, Fe, Li, Ni, and Zn) and non-essential elements (Al, B, Cd, Pb, and V). P. aspera showed a higher concentration of elements than P. candei crenata, and it was in the Buenavista locality where alarming values of Cd 0.658 ± 0.124 mg/kg were observed for P. aspera. These two limpet species have been found to be useful as bioindicators of marine pollution based on the concentrations of metals especially for Cd and Cu.

La distribución, abundancia y composición específica de la Familia Sapphirinidae (Copepoda Cyclopoida) es estudiada en 46 estaciones oceanográficas alrededor de las islas Canarias durante la campaña oceanográfica CANARIAS 85 a bordo del buque oceanográfico Taliarte. Las pescas se llevaron a cabo con una red triple WP2 de 200 micrómetros de luz de malla, capturándose 226 ejemplares: 134 del género Sapphirina, 89 de Copilia y 3 de Vettoria. Las especies más abundantes fueron C. quadrata, S. metallina y S. nigromaculata. Existe gradiente creciente este-oeste en abundancia y número de especies, coincidente con el carácter tropical de la familia y el gradiente de temperatura superficial del archipiélago canario.

Marine fishes are exposed to great human-induced alterations due to the indiscriminate discharges into the sea, increasing marine pollution. For this study, 324 specimens of Sardina pilchardus from the Canary Islands were analized during a period of 2 years (June 2016 to May 2018). The concentration of 11 metals and trace elements (Al, B, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Li, Ni, Pb, V and Zn) was determined in each individual using the Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) technique. Statistical analyses were carried out considering the following factors: oceanographic season, maturity of the gonads in the seasons, size of the specimens. Sardina pilchardus specimens captured in the hot season presented higher Ni, Li and Pb levels than the specimens caught in the cold season. Immature specimens had higher concentration in more metals than the mature specimens. This fact may be due to the fact that these specimens require a much higher metabolic rate due to their growth and do not detoxify like mature specimens. This work investigates whether a submarine volcanic eruption off El Hierro (Canary Islands) in October 2011 influenced the metal contents of two deep water cephalopod species: Abraliopsis morisii and Pyroteuthis margaritifera. This was assessed by comparing metal contents in specimens collected off the island of El Hierro and in the neighbouring islands of La Palma and Tenerife during an experimental deep water fishing trip. The concentration of 20 heavy metals was analyzed in 180 specimens of A. morisii and P. margaritifera collected around the three islands to test for inter-island differences for each species and metal. While both species showed geographical differences in metal concentrations, the main finding was that A. morisii could be a bioindicator species for metals such as Li, Sr and Ca.

The Canary Islands are home to many cetacean species, many of which are resident species. The present work aims to analyze, for the first time to the best of the authors’ knowledge, the macronutrients, micronutrients and trace elements and toxic heavy metals in muscle and liver tissue of six species of stranded cetaceans in the Canary Islands. The study species were: Tursiops truncatus, Stenella frontalis, Delphinus delphis, Grampus griseus, Globicephala macrorynchus and Physeter macrocephalus. Statistical analysis studied the significant differences between the concentrations in muscle and liver tissues, with the differences in element content depending on the type of diving and length of the species. The results indicate that there are differences between muscle and liver for Ca, Cd, Co, Cu, K, Mg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sr, V and Zn. Deep-diving animals differ in their concentrations of Cr, Cu, Mg, Mn, Mo, and Zn with respect to shallow-diving animals in muscle and in liver in Al, B, Cr, K, Mn and Mo. As for the differences between sex, the males present differences in their concentrations of B, Cd, K and Mg in muscle tissue with respect to the females, while differences in the liver were only detected in the Fe content. The study of the correlations shows that as the size of the animal increases, the concentration of Cd increases while the concentrations of Al, Cu and Zn decrease. The specimens foraging in shallower waters had the highest concentration of the macronutrient.

Due to increased environmental pollution, monitoring of contaminants in the environment and marine organisms is a fundamental tool for assessing the existence of risk from their consumption to human health. The levels of toxic heavy metals (Cd, Pb, and Al), trace and essential metals (B, Ba, Co, Cu, Cr, Fe, Li, Mn, Mo, Ni, Sr, V, and Zn), and macronutrients (Ca, K, Mg, Na) in two species of fish for human consumption were quantified in the present study. Eighty samples of muscle tissue and 80 samples of liver tissue belonging to two species of Osteichthyes fish; Sarpa salpa and Chelon labrosus were analyzed. The studied specimens were caught on the northern coast of Gran Canaria (Canary Islands) with fishing rods. As they caught from the shore, they are suitable samples for assessing the toxic levels of representative species caught by local amateur fishermen. The results show that both species are fit for human consumption since they have toxic levels of heavy metals (Cd, Pb, and Al) which are below the maximum established levels; however, the toxic levels of the liver samples are several orders of magnitude higher than the muscle samples, so we discourage their regular consumption. The risk assessment indicated that the two species of fish are safe for the average consumer; however, if the livers of these species are consumed, there could be risks because they exceed the PTWI for Pb and the TWI for Cd.

Studies of the content of heavy metals and trace elements in fish and other marine organisms are of great importance to know the state of the marine ecosystem. This study has been carried out in northwestern African waters, Scomber colias being the target species, sampling a total of 345 specimens over 2 years. For the determination of metals and trace elements (Al, B, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Li, Ni, Pb, V, and Zn) in the muscle, the ICP-OES (inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry) was used. In the statistical study, the factors (oceanographic and maturity in the seasons, size of the specimens) were used. The samples sampled in the cold season that had high concentrations of metals may be due to the influence that African upwelling has on the Canary Islands. The metallic contents of our samples are lower than those found in the studies in Mauritania and Morocco due to the greater influence that upwelling has in these areas., Sí

All marine organisms bio-accumulate metals and trace elements in a different way, and there are great differences depending on the level of taxonomic classes. A total of 660 samples of 22 species of different taxonomic class types have been used for this study, all samples were measured with atomic emission spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma (ICP-OES), the mammalian class has the highest concentration of Zn (17.215 ± 13.750 mg/kg w.w) and of Fe (86.215 ± 49.495 mg/kg w.w), these values being much higher than the other classes, and the cephalopods have the highest concentration in heavy metals such as Cd (0.963 ± 1.056 mg/kg w.w) and Pb (0.466 ± 0.909 mg/kg w.w). All the classes presented significant differences among each other, each class presents some ranges of each metal different to the other classes. Based on the present study, the ecological preferences and the taxonomical classification give differential metal content patterns for marine organisms, thus showing the importance of this study for the preparation of environmental plans to check the state of the marine ecosystem., Sí

Marine organisms are exposed to great changes caused by man due to discharges into the oceans, so the study of marine pollution is of great value for each ecosystem. For this study, 963 specimens of pelagic fish have been collected, of which 345 are Scomber colias, 294 are Trachurus picturatus and 324 are Sardina pilchardus, it was wanted to study the development and ontogeny in the three species observing if there were variations in their metallic content. The study covered a total of 2 years, from June 2016 to May 2018.16 samples of each species were studied each month, during the 2 years of sampling, from the samplings carried out by the Canary Islands Oceanographic Center of the Spanish Institute Oceanography (COC-IEO) in the markets of the Island of Tenerife. The concentration of 11 anthropic metals was determined in each sample using the Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) technique. Statistical studies were carried out with factors such as the oceanographic season, and the level of maturity of the gonads. S. colias was the species that presented the highest concentration in a greater number of metals. S. pilchardus presents higher concentration in Cu, Li and Zn, in the warm season. These are metals of a very anthropic character on coasts; This species tends to get closer to the coasts compared to the other two and is the cause of its higher concentration in these metals due to the influence of pollution linked to the coast. Electricity losses in electric power systems are one of the main challenges for the electric power industry worldwide. Although to some extent electricity losses are inevitable, effective actions must be sought to solve this problem, to reduce both technical and non-technical losses. Consequently, this article proposes a system for measuring the caliber of power lines through the use of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and computer vision. This system will be a tool to decrease technical losses. At present, the caliber measurement is carried out subjectively. An operator or electrical technician by means of his expertise and a visual examination measures the wire gauge without a tool. This causes outdated global information systems, resulting in poor electrical planning. The proposed system focuses on flight control of the UAV, detection of objects using a mask of convolutional neural networks, distance estimation, and caliber measurement of aerial power lines without contact. The system reliability is high, with a concordance correlation (r = 0.97) between the measurements made with a manual meter and the UAV. Therefore, the proposed system improves data quality, reduces time and costs, and minimizes the risk of accidents.

Contamination from metals as a result of anthropic action in coastal marine areas is increasing and it is therefore of great importance to have an appropriate follow-up program in these areas. Samples were taken in the intertidal in 6 sites, of which 5 were in the island of Tenerife and one in the island of Lanzarote (Canary Islands, Spain); in all sites, 15 anemone samples were collected. Twenty metals were analyzed by ICP-OES. The results show the highest concentrations of contamination in the area of Los Silos and Puerto del Carmen for the anthropogenic metals Cr, B, Ni, Cu, Pb, Cd, Fe, Li, and V; Los Silos shows Pb 25.264 ± 27.185 mg/kg and Cd 0.058 ± 0.050 mg/kg, which are high compared with the other sites and indicate that the area may be exposed to a high degree of contamination. Compared with other studies, Los Silos has the same or greater concentrations of anthropogenic metals than areas of greater pollution, such as the Mediterranean Sea or the Indian Ocean. For these reasons, Anemonia sulcata can be used as a bioindicator of anthropogenic contamination and it has become a useful organism for environmental pollution monitoring studies.

A statistical study of recovery has been carried out in five mineralization procedures: i) HNO3/H2SO4 (1:1), 45°C/15 h; ii) HNO3, 100°C (teflon pump)/l h.; iii) HNO3/H2SO4 (1:1), 100°C (teflon pump)/l h; iv) H2SO4/HCI (1:1), 100°C (teflon pump)/l h; and v) Lumaton, 45°C/24 h, for determination of mercury (cold vapor - A.A.S.) in muscle of fish. Only in method 1 there is no evidence of the systematic error (P > 0.05). This method was applied to 449 samples of fresh and salted fish. Mean concentrations of mercury ranged of 0.014 ppm ( Pagellus erythrinus ) to 0.970 ppm ( Lepidopus caudatus ) for fresh fish, and for salted fish between 0.043 ppm ( Diplodus sargus cadenati ) and 0.172 ppm ( Galeorhinus galeus ). One can conclude that the low mercury level of analyzed samples was lower than fish species from some polluted areas of the Mediterranean Sea. No significant differences were observed between the mean concentrations of fresh and salted fish.

The levels of toxic heavy metals (Al, Cd, Pb), macroelements (Ca, K, Mg, Na) and microelements and trace elements (B, Ba, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Li, Mn, Mo, Ni, Sr, V, Zn) were determined in 54 muscle samples from three species of fish for human consumption, Balistes capriscus (grey triggerfish), Canthidermis sufflamen (oceanic triggerfish) and Heteropriacanthus fulgens (rock catalufa), using spectrometry of inductively coupled plasma optical emission (ICP-OES). The aims of this study is to determine if the three species are good bioindicators of environmental pollution and to verify whether they are suitable for human consumption. Significant differences were found in the levels of Al, B, Fe, K, Mn, Mo, Na and Zn between the three species studied. The results suggest that the underwater volcano off El Hierro influences the metallic content (Al, K the most characteristic) of H. fulgens. An evaluation of the toxic risk derived from the ingestion of B. capriscus, C. sufflamen and H. fulgens was carried out, analyzing the Admissible Daily Intake (ADI) and the Safety Margin (MoS). For the nutritional study, the Recommended Daily Intake (RDI) index was used. Therefore, once the study has been carried out and under the conditions established in terms of daily / weekly fish consumption, proposed by AESAN, there would not be any type of toxic risk after ingesting B. capriscus, C. sufflamen and H. cruentatus.

The marine organisms are exposed to great human-induced alterations due to the indiscriminate discharges into the sea, which is why the study of marine pollution is of great value for each ecosystem. Each organism bioaccumulates distantly the heavy metals and trace elements in its organism. Because of this it is possible to classify different groups of fish according to their feeding with the content of these metals. Ten fish species were grouped considering their trophic level and habitat ecology (benthic predators, herbivores, omnivores, pelagic predators and superpredator) and analyzed for its metal content. Statistically significant differences were found among all the fish groups, with the Superpredator group containing the highest concentrations in all metals, mainly Fe (103.751 ± 92.151 mg/kg) and Al (28.908 ± 21.221 mg/kg). Therefore, this study highlights that the selection of the species taking into account feeding and habitat partitioning must be carefully considered being crucial to identify fish groups as biological indicators of marine pollution., Sí

The contents of 3 heavy metals (Al, Cd, and Pb) and 10 trace elements (B, Cr, Cu, Fe, Li, Mg, Ni, Sr, V, Zn) were determined by means of atomic emission spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma (ICP-OES) in 117 specimens of red mullet, Mullus surmuletus. The specimens were taken in two of the Canary Islands; two locations on the island of Tenerife: Candelaria on the northeast coast and Punta de Hidalgo on the north coast and Arguineguin, on the south coast of the island of Gran Canaria. No significant differences were found between the two sites in Tenerife regarding the metal content of the specimens studied, but differences were found between the specimens captured in Arguineguin and the two sites in Tenerife, the latter having higher concentrations of the analyzed metals.

Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) has demonstrated to be a fundamental tool for detecting damage in early stages in existent civil engineering structures. This paper explores the accuracy of vibration-based SHM for identifying the existence of damage in adobe constructions, a widespread structural system but on which limited experimental and numerical applications of the technique are available. Two damage detection methodologies are investigated: (i) Autoregressive Models to predict the structural dynamic response taking into account the environmental parameters as input; and (ii) Principal Component Analysis to detect patterns and anomalies in this response without the need of information about environmental conditions. The results of the laboratory tests on a real scale adobe wall positively indicate the capabilities of these two methodologies to accurately identify damage. They also evidence the importance of monitoring several modes as their sensitivity to damage depends on damage location itself. Furthermore, the application of these two damage detection methodologies in a real case study related to the long-term monitoring of a 16(th) Century adobe church allowed confirming the building safe condition during almost two years of monitoring period, as well as the absence of damage after a 5.2Mw earthquake., The present work was carried out by the Engineering and Heritage research group of PUCP in collaboration with the Civil Engineering Departments of the University of Chile and the University of Minho. The overexploitation of shark and ray fishing as well as anthropogenic pollution in the sea has led to a large decline in their population, and because sharks occupy a high trophic position in the ecosystem, they could have high concentrations of heavy metals such as Hg, Pb, and Cd. This study is based on seven species of demersal sharks which were caught in the Macaronesian archipelagos (Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and the Azores Archipelago). Hg and Pb concentrations were found in the present study to be below those reported in other comparative studies, with the highest reported values of Hg and Pb being 281,738 μg/kg for Pb in Deania profundorum (Smith & Radcliffe, 1912) and 264,30 μg/kg for Hg in Centrophorus uyato, Rafinesque, 1810. As for Cd, the values found here are higher than those in the literature, the highest reported concentration being 120.36 μg/kg in Centrophorus squamosus (Bonnaterre, 1788).

A total of 20 metals (Na, K, Ca, Mg, B, Ba, Co, Cr, Cu, Sr, Fe, Li, Mn, Mo, Ni, V, Zn, Al, Cd, and Pb) were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry in muscle and liver tissue from a total of 28 examples of the fishes Mullus surmuletus and Pseudupeneus prayensis marketed in Tenerife, Canary Islands (Spain). Significant differences (P < 0.05) in B, K, Mg, Mn, and Na concentrations were found between muscle and liver. The mean concentrations of K (1,388.04 mg/kg wet weight [wet wt]) and Mg (153.33 mg/kg wet wt) were higher in muscle than in liver (697.49 and 114.21 mg/kg wet wt, respectively). The mean concentrations of B in liver (0.18 mg/kg wet wt), Mn (0.70 mg/kg wet wt), and Na (892.09 mg/kg wet wt) were higher than those in muscle (0.15, 0.11, and 375.55 mg/kg wet wt, respectively). The mean concentrations of Al, Cd, and Pb in muscle tissue were 2.72 mg/kg wet wt and 4.28 and 10.29 μg/kg wet wt, and those in liver tissue were 31.31 mg/kg wet wt and 612.91 and 232.08 μg/kg wet wt, respectively. When comparing the two fish species, the muscle tissue of M. surmuletus has significantly higher concentrations (P < 0.05) of Al, B, Ba, Ca, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, Sr, and Zn than did P. prayensis muscle, whereas the concentrations of Cd and V were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in P. prayensis muscle. Toxicological assessment of Cd and Pb concentrations was performed using the maximum limits set by the European Commission Regulations 1881/2006 and 629/2008 for muscle tissue (50 and 300 μg/kg wet wt, respectively). The concentrations of Cd and Pb in muscle detected in the present study for all the analyzed examples of M. surmuletus and P. prayensis were lower than the maximums established for muscle tissue by European legislation. Therefore, consumption of the muscle of these fish is considered safe in terms of Al, Cd, and Pb concentrations. However, the consumption of liver tissue should be avoided because of its high levels of metals. Constant monitoring of the concentrations of metals of toxicological concern in fish products available in the market is an essential part of food safety.

The increases in urbanization, demography and industrial activity, along with growing human needs which exploit the resources of the planet, have exponentially exacerbated pollution. In particular, the discharge of heavy metals into the marine ecosystem is a problem of global magnitude, as this may damage the diversity of marine species and ecosystems because of their toxicity, long persistence and bioaccumulation. Consequently, it is necessary to carry out an assessment of the risk of human exposure from the consumption of marine species potentially exposed to this type of pollutants. In the present study, the levels of toxic heavy metals (Cd, Pb and Al) as well as trace and essential metals (B, Ba, Co, Cu, Cr, Fe, Li, Mn, Mo, Ni, Sr, V and Zn) and macronutrients (Ca, K, Mg, Na) have been quantified in two species of fish for human consumption. In order to do this, a total of 80 muscle samples and 80 liver samples, belonging to two species of osteichthyes (bony fish), Diplodus sargus cadenati and Sparisoma cretense, were analyzed. The specimens studied were captured on the north coast of Gran Canaria (Canary Islands) using recreational fishing techniques. As they caught from the shore, the data obtained respond to the need to assess the toxic levels in two representative species of artisanal and recreational fishing in the area. The risk assessment indicated that these two fish species are safe for the average consumer; however, if the livers are frequently consumed, there may be potential risks because they exceed the Admissible Daily Intakes for Pb and Cd.

Trace metal concentrations (Fe, Cu, Co, Zn, Ni and V) were investigated in three rockpool shrimp species (Palaemon elegans, Palaemon adspersus and Palaemon serratus) from six littoral sampling sites (polluted and non-polluted) of Tenerife in the Canary Islands (Central Eastern Atlantic), Spain. Sex ratio for all three species has been determined: females predominate over males in all species and significant differences in total length and cephalothorax length was detected between sexes, being females larger than males. By other side, concentrations of trace metals were determined in whole specimens. Higher mean values for every metal were observed in P. adspersus. In males, higher values were observed in P. elegans and P. serratus, whereas in P. adspersus, mean values are higher in females. Finally, mean concentrations of trace metals studied were higher, in general terms, in the two clearly polluted stations: Santa Cruz of Tenerife commercial harbour and its fishery dock dependency.

Lead and cadmium levels of some species of brown-algae (Phaeophyta) from the mesolittoral (intertidal area) of the Island of Tenerife (central–eastern Atlantic) were determined by Atomic Absorption Spectrometry. The quality control was carried out using a standard “CRM 279 Ulva lactuca”.The mean, minimum and maximum concentrations were 11.21, 2.090 and 81.795 μg/g/dw; and 1.13, 0.190 and 5.130 μg/g/dw for lead and cadmium, respectively. The fact that samples registering the highest cadmium concentrations were the same as those which showed the highest lead level corresponding to a sampling station nearby an urban water outlet could be relevant. The concentrations of Hg in three groups of algae ( Phaeophyta, Chlorophyta , and Rhodophyta ) found in the Canary Islands littoral were determined. The mean concentrations found were, respectively: Phaeophyta : 0.13 mg kg −1 (range 0.01 to 2.30 mg kg −1 ); Chlorophyta : 0.13 (range 0.025 to 0.36 mg kg −1 ); Rhodophyta : 0.11 mg kg −1 (range 0.02 to 0.28 mg kg −1 ). There are no relevant differences in the contents of Hg at group level and at species level, only a sample of Phaeophyta presents an abnormally high concentration (>1 mg kg −1 ), corresponding to a sampling station nearby an urban drain.

El Sistema Aragonés de Salud incorporó en el 2004 la atención al paciente dependiente del tabaco en su cartera de servicios en Atención Primaria. El papel de la enfermería en la identificación del paciente fumador y el el uso de intervenciones breves o intensivas ha sido fundamental desde entonces dentro del trabajo desarrollado desde los centros de salud. Siguiendo la estela emprendida por la Subcomisión de Cuidados de Aragón en la progresiva incorporación de planes de cuidados entandarizados dentro del módulo “Planes personales” del programa OMI-AP y manteniendo su estructura y diseño, se propone en este trabajo varios planes de cuidados estandarizados integrados en el modelo del cambio de Prochaska y Diclemente, con lenguaje normalizado (NANDA-NIC-NOC), así como el sistema de filtrado según valoraciones que disparen su aparición en el citado módulo de planes personales.

This document shows the results obtained from a study on the concentration of toxic heavy metals in the internal tissue and exoskeleton of sea urchins, collected from their natural habitat. The levels of lead and cadmium were measured by Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrometry. The mean concentrations of lead and cadmium in the internal tissue were 304.04 and 260.54 μg/kg respectively, whereas in the shell they were 185.02 and 142.48 μg/kg. We also performed a statistical analysis of the differences in the distribution of metals between their exoskeleton and their internal content, a correlation study of the metal content in internal tissue and shell and sampling areas, and a correlation study between the metal content and sample size. Since the sea urchin Diadema antillarum presents a wide range of variation in metal content, this study suggests that this species is an excellent bioindicator of heavy metal contamination. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article presents the results obtained through a study of the concentration of trace metals (iron, zinc, manganese, chromium, copper, nickel) in some conserves of variegated scallops (Chlamys varia, Bivalvia, Mollusca). A total of 300 samples of seven different commercial brands (named A, B, D, H, J, L and M) and one processing type, 'scallop sauce', were analysed. Samples were collected weekly in a large shopping centre in Santa Cruz de Tenerife during a 12-month period. Variegated scallops have considerable concentrations of zinc, cupper and manganese, so that their dietary intake constitutes an important source of these metals. However, they have low concentrations of chrome and nickel, and the levels of iron are similar to those found in other bivalve molluscs.

The concentrations of three toxic heavy metals, mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd), were determined in preserved variegated scallops (Chlamys varia, Bivalvia, Mollusca), which are often consumed in Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain). A total of 300 samples of seven commercial brands (A, B, D, H, J, L, and M) and one processed product ("scallop sauce") were analyzed. Samples were collected weekly in a major shopping area in Santa Cruz de Tenerife during a 12-month period. The concentrations of lead and mercury were far below the maximum limit permitted for human consumption by the European Communities Commission regulation (EC) 466/2001 (1 and 0.5 mg kg(-1) wet weight for Pb and Hg, respectively). Concentrations of cadmium were close to the maximum limit permitted by regulation (EC) 466/2001 (1 mg kg(-1) wet weight).

Concentrations of mercury were determined for tinned molluscs (Mollusca, Bivalvia), i.e., mussels (Mytilus spp.), cockles (Cerastoderma edule), variegated scallops (Chlamys varia), and razor shells (Ensis spp.), consumed in Spain. A total of 220 samples were analyzed: 120 mussels, 40 cockles, 24 variegated scallops, and 36 razor shells. Samples were obtained weekly from markets in Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Canary Islands) over a period of 12 months. All observed concentrations of mercury were below the maximum permitted for human consumption (0.5 mg/kg) as defined by European Community Decision 93/ 351/CE. Mercury concentrations were 27.28 +/- 12.43 microg/kg for mussels, 66.59 +/- 23.53 microg/kg for cockles, 33.68 +/- 15.76 microg/kg for variegated scallops, and 21.26 +/- 12.24 microg/kg for razor shells. To evaluate the importance of mercury as a food contaminant, the percentage ingested daily, the weight of mercury in the diet, and the calculated percentage of this metal in the diet contributed by reference species were estimated.

Concentrations of three toxic heavy metals (Hg, Pb, Cd) and six essential heavy metals (Fe, Zn, Mn, Cr, Cu, Ni) were determined in mussel conserves (Mytilus galloprovincialis, Bivalvia, Mollusca) consumed habitually by individuals in Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain). A total of 600 samples were analyzed, corresponding to six different commercial brands and four different processing types: pickled sauce (mixture of olive oil, vinegar, red pepper, laurel, and salt), coquille St. Jacques sauce (coquille St. Jacques broth), nature (water and salt), and bionature (water, salt, and soluble vegetal fiber). Samples were collected weekly from markets in Santa Cruz de Tenerife during a 12-month period. All values for toxic metals were lower than the permitted maximum for human consumption as proscribed in European Community Directive 2001/22/CE (1,000 microg/kg wet weight for Pb and Cd) and European Community Decision 93/351/EEC (500 microg/kg wet weight for Hg). For the six essential heavy metals, mussels are a very good source, contributing high percentages of the recommended daily allowance.

The aim of this work is to show the existence of interfaces between various types of heritage and the benfits of these heritage's crossing. Qualitative non-interventionist methodologies were used, and bibliographic, cartographic, and field visits were carried out. Visits guided by the authors and discussions with specialists and non-specialists were a priceless support of the realization of the study. The interaction with the local population was an important part of the methodology to understand the territories in question.
