5. On the magnetoelastic and magnetoelectric couplings across the antiferromagnetic transition in multiferroic BiFeO3

Abstract

Clear anomalies in the lattice thermal expansion (deviation from linear variation) and elastic properties (softening of the sound velocity) at the antiferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic transition are observed in the prototypical multiferroic BiFeO3 using a combination of picosecond acoustic pump-probe and high-temperature X-ray diffraction experiments. Similar anomalies are also evidenced using first-principles calculations supporting our experimental findings. Those calculations in addition to a simple Landau-like model we also developed allow to understand the elastic softening and lattice change at T_N as a result of magnetostriction combined with electrostrictive and magnetoelectric couplings which renormalize the elastic constants of the high-temperature reference phase when the critical T_N temperature is reached.

Abstract

Ferroic materials (ferromagnetic, ferroelectric, ferroelastic) usually divide into domains with different orientations of their order parameter. Coupling different ferroic systems creates new functionalities, for instance the electrical control of macroscopic magnetic properties including magnetization and coercive field. Here we show that ferroelastic domains can be used to control both magnetic order and magnetization direction at the nanoscale with a voltage. We use element-specific x-ray imaging to map the magnetic domains as a function of temperature and voltage in epitaxial FeRh on ferroelastic BaTiO3. Exploiting the nanoscale phase-separation of FeRh, we locally interconvert between ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism with a small electric field just above room temperature. Our results emphasize the importance of nanoscale ferroic domain structure to achieve enhanced coupling in artificial multiferroics.

15. Photoluminescence and structural phase transition relationship in Er-doped BaTiO3 model ferroelectric system.

Abstract

When embedded within a ferroelectric host matrix, rare-earth ions and their photoluminescence (PL) provide an original all-optical light probe for temperature, electric field and mechanical stimulus. However, a clear and global view of how PL is affected by the phase transitions that are inherent to ferroelectric materials is still lacking. Here, using an Er-doped BaTiO3 model ferroelectric material, we demonstrate that the PL of the green emission bands resulting from a 488 nm light excitation exhibit changes at the critical ferroelectric transitions. The transition temperatures also have a signature on the absolute temperature sensitivity we extracted from the ratio of the two main green emission bands. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the sub-peaks related to the lifting of degeneracy by the crystal field also contain information on the phase transitions. We propose that the intensity ratio and the wavelength position difference of some of these sub-peaks can be used as order parameters to describe the phase transitions. Abstract

The interaction of domain structure and defects in ferroelectric thin films has been studied for decades. However, the role of dislocations and thermal stability of microstructures is still poorly studied. By combining transmission electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction experiments, and phase-field simulations, we show that dislocation pairs induced by post-annealing above 550 °C provide a stress field stabilizing a domains in 30 nm thick tetragonal PbTiO3 films on SrTiO3 substrate, initially exhibiting pure c domains. Based on phase-field simulations, we further discuss the effects of single dislocations and dislocation pairs on the nucleation of a-domains and the occurrence of non-ferroelastic 180° domains. Dislocations, and the possibility to tune them using an appropriate thermal annealing process, offer a path for modulating the domains and domain wall states and, thus, the physical properties of ferroelectric films. Abstract

Vanadium dioxide exhibits a metal to insulator transition close to room temperature, making it very interesting in particular for radio frequency (RF) device applications. Here, we compare the structural and RF properties of VO2 thin films grown by magnetron sputtering on c-cut and r-cut sapphire substrates. The epitaxial growth of VO2 on c-cut sapphire gives rise to several crystallographic variants for the insulating M1 phase. Moreover, during the structural transition, simultaneous presence of both metallic and insulating phases is evidenced by x-ray diffraction over a large temperature range. Films grown on r-cut sapphire exhibit only two variants and present a very narrow temperature range of their structural transition. Interestingly, such structural differences of the films grown on c- and r-cut sapphire substrates have very little influence on their dc resistivity, while the transmission of the RF signal through the metallic phase was found much lower on c-cut than on r-cut sapphire. This supports the fact that r-cut sapphire is preferable for VO2-based RF device fabrication. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new synthetic method for preparing highly calibrated CsPbBr3 nanocrystal perovskites is described and analyzed using high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy. This new method based on soft chemistry leads to the large-scale production of nanocrystals. Abstract

The electromechanical and structural properties of [001] and [111] -oriented Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3–6%PbTiO3 ( PZN – 6%PT ) single crystals have been characterized using dielectric spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, depolarization current, and piezoelectric techniques from 80?K to 300?K . Both unpoled and poled samples show a dielectric loss peak located in the range from 100 to 200?K . The poled samples show a change in the slope of the real part of the dielectric permittivity and a broad, frequency dependent peak in the imaginary part below 200?K . In the same temperature range, we observed a broadening of the Bragg peaks, fluctuations in the macroscopic polarization, and a change in the rate of decrease in the elastic compliance and the d31 piezoelectric coefficient. These results were analyzed within the framework of three models proposed in the literature. This analysis argues that these observations originate from the freezing of the dynamics of the polar nanoregions ( PNRs ) at low temperature. This assumption implicates two important results; (i) the PNRs are embedded and persist within the ferroelectric, low-temperature phases, and (ii) they contribute to the large piezoelectric properties of the PZN – x%PT single crystals. Abstract

We report monitoring and analysis of the contamination overlayer on the surface of different SrTiO3 (STO) substrates by in situ spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) and ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Substrates of STO with different terminations, random and TiO2 terminated, were heated from room temperature up to 720 °C under oxygen pressure in UHV chamber similar to conditions commonly used for epitaxial growth of perovskite oxides. Contamination layer on the substrate was modeled as an equivalent dielectric overlayer with a thickness of 2 nm at room temperature which decreases progressively during the heating up to reach its minimum (around 1 unit cell) at the temperature around 550 °C. After exposition to air, surface recovers a contamination layer on both types of substrates (with random termination and TiO2 termination). XPS analysis confirmed that water and carbon dioxide as adventitious carbon species present in air are chemically adsorbed on the STO surface, providing evidence of desorption process which persists until 550 °C. This condition is an important issue in order to obtain clean controlled interface between STO and deposited film for low temperature growth as for instance atomic layer deposition and integration of STO buffer layer on silicon. In situ SE commonly present in thin layer deposition systems is a powerful tool to monitor in situ surface contamination and decontamination temperature as it can be performed in situ even in operando.
