To evaluate the intra/inter observer and diagnostic reliability of 3-dimensional (3D) model reconstruction computed tomography (CT) compared to the traditional two-dimensional (2D) CT when evaluating Lisfranc (LF) injuries.A retrospective study was performed on CT studies of patients with clinically suspected LF injuries examined in the emergency department at medium size medical center. Each CT study was evaluated for metatarsal fractures and subluxations employing both standard 2D and 3D CT model reconstruction. Four orthopaedists, 2 senior and 2 residents, were assigned to review and evaluate each CT. Each CT study was reviewed twice by each reader in a randomized order. Descriptive statistics were calculated for all measured variables. The intra-observer and inter-observer agreement Kappa coefficients were calculated to evaluate reliability and reproducibility between and within readers for each modality.The study included 44 patients. Median age was 41.4 years (interquartile range, 23-58). The intra-observer and inter-observer reliability was good (intra-observer; 3D Kappa; 0.76 and 2D Kappa 0.73 p0.001, inter-observer; 3D Kappa 0.68, 2D Kappa 0.63 and combined 2D and 3D kappa 0.68, p0.001). Three dimensional CT was found to be more sensitive than 2D CT, specifically when evaluating for second metatarsal dislocation (sensitivity: 70% vs 47%). Combined evaluation of 2D and 3D CT, greatly improved sensitivity rate to 85.7%. In terms of fracture diagnosis, combined evaluation of 2D and 3D CT showed higher sensitivity and specificity rates as compared to 2D or 3D alone.The employment of 3D CT in LF injury diagnosis, in isolation and in combination with 2D CT, seems to improve the diagnostic accuracy and reliability between and within observers compared to 2D CT alone.

Malignant gliomas are heterogeneous tumors arising in the central nervous system (CNS) driven by epigenetic and metabolic aberrations. Mutations in Isocitrate DeHydrogenase (IDH1/2) enzymes, highly frequent in adult gliomas, confer a gain-of-function activity that favors the conversion of a-ketoglutarate (α-KG) to the oncometabolite 2-hydroxyglutarate (2-HG), a competitive inhibitor of α-KG-dependent enzymes. These include DNA and histone lysine demethylases, resulting in an aberrant hypermethylation phenotype in mutant-IDH-expressing cells. Here, we applied an unbiased approach, leveraging epigenetic-focused Cytometry by Time-of-Flight (CyTOF) analysis, to systematically profile the effect of mutant-IDH1 expression on a broad panel of histone modifications. This analysis revealed extensive remodeling of chromatin patterns by mutant-IDH, with the most prominent deregulation of histone acetylation marks rather than histone methylation. The loss of histone acetylation occurs rapidly following mutant-IDH1 induction and affects acetylation patterns over enhancers and intergenic regions. Furthermore, cells expressing mutant-IDH1 showed higher epigenetic heterogeneity, which may support the tumorigenic potential of these cells. Our study underscores the tight interaction between chromatin and metabolism dysregulation in glioma, and highlights novel epigenetic pathways affected by mutant-IDH1-driven metabolic rewiring.

The histone H3 variant, H3.3, is localized at specific regions in the genome, especially promoters and active enhancers, and has been shown to play important roles in development. A lysine to methionine substitution in position 27 (H3.3K27M) is a main cause of Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (specifically Diffuse Midline Glioma, K27M-mutant), a lethal type of pediatric cancer. H3.3K27M has a dominant-negative effect by inhibiting the Polycomb Repressor Complex 2 (PRC2) activity. Here, we studied the immediate, genome-wide, consequences of the H3.3K27M mutation independent of PRC2 activity. We developed Doxycycline (Dox)-inducible mouse embryonic stem cells (ESCs) carrying a single extra copy of WT-H3.3, H3.3K27M and H3.3K27L, all fused to HA. We performed RNA-Seq and ChIP-Seq at different times following Dox induction in undifferentiated and differentiated ESCs. We find increased binding of H3.3 around transcription start sites in cells expressing both H3.3K27M and H3.3K27L compared with WT, but not in cells treated with PRC2 inhibitors. Differentiated cells carrying either H3.3K27M or H3.3K27L retain expression of ESC-active genes, in expense of expression of genes related to neuronal differentiation. Taken together, our data suggest that a modifiable H3.3K27 is required for proper histone incorporation and cellular maturation, independent of PRC2 activity.

In early Arabic literature, ʿAnqāʾ Mughrib is the name of the quintessential mythical bird. The ʿAnqāʾ appears in a myriad of medieval sources of different genres: poetical, narrative, proverbial, scientific, philosophical, and mystical. This paper draws attention to the multiple ways in which this bird was represented and the functions it fulfilled in different literary contexts. It explores the intricate web of quotations, allusions, and literary innovations that facilitated its multifarious uses and re-uses. I explore the various manifestations of the ʿAnqāʾ to demonstrate the different and at times contradictory meanings ascribed to it and its diverse literary functions: as a creature of speculative zoology; as metaphor of scarcity or non-existence; as a metaphor of God; as a marker of fictionality; and more.

Lower extremity amputation related to diabetes is a serious outcome, which can have devastating effects on the patient and family. The epidemiology of amputations has recently been used as a possible measure of the adequacy of medical prevention and treatment of diabetes and diabetic foot complications.To report on patients undergoing amputations at one medical center in Israel, their co-morbidities, and the outcomes.A retrospective chart study was conducted of amputees operated between 1 September 2017 and 30 September 2018.The study population comprised 72 patients who had major amputations for diabetes and/or ischemia, mean age 72 ± 10 years, 74% males, 93% with type 2 diabetes. Mean age corrected Charlson Comorbidity Index was 8.2 ± 2.1 with 90% (65 patients) presenting with a score of 6 or higher. Before the recent deterioration, fewer than 20% of the patients exited their home routinely and 24% had an official diagnosis of dementia. There were 31 below knee amputations (BKA) and 41 above knee amputations (AKA). The 30-day, 3-month, 1-year, and 2-year mortality rates were 15.3%, 27.8%, 43.1%, and 54.2% respectively. Median survival period was 20 months. Survival after AKA was 13.4 ± 20, which was significantly less than after BKA (25.4 ± 2.7, P = 0.097).Factors other than the quality of management of patients with diabetes and complications may contribute to amputation rates; thus, making speculations from international comparisons of raw amputation rates problematic. This population was less healthy than reported in most studies.

Extra peritoneal packing (EPP) is a quick and highly effective method to control pelvic hemorrhage.To determine whether EPP can be as safely and efficiently performed in the emergency department (ED) as in the operating room (OR).Retrospective study of 29 patients who underwent EPP in the ED or OR in two trauma centers in Israel 2008-2018.Our study included 29 patients, 13 in the ED-EPP group and 16 in the OR-EPP group. The mean injury severity score (ISS) was 34.9 ± 11.8. Following EPP, hemodynamic stability was successfully achieved in 25 of 29 patients (86.2%). A raise in the mean arterial pressure (MAP) with a median of 25 mmHg (mean 30.0 ± 27.5, P0.001) was documented. All patients who did not achieve hemodynamic stability after EPP had multiple sources of bleeding or fatal head injury and eventually succumbed. Patients who underwent EPP in the ED showed higher change in MAP (P = 0.0458). The overall mortality rate was 27.5% (8/29) with no difference between the OR and ED-EPP. No differences were found between ED and OR-EPP in the amount of transfused blood products, surgical site infections, and length of stay in the hospital. However, patients who underwent ED-EPP were more prone to develop deep vein thrombosis (DVT): 50% (5/10) vs. 9% (1/11) in ED and OR-EPP groups respectively (P = 0.038).EPP is equally effective when performed in the ED or OR with similar surgical site infection rates but higher incidence of DVT.

A comparison between polarization-transfer to a bound proton in quasi-free kinematics by the A ( e → , e ′ p → ) knockout reaction and that in elastic scattering off a free proton can provide information on the characteristics of the bound proton. In the past the reported measurements have been compared to those of a free proton with zero initial momentum. We introduce, for the first time, expressions for the polarization-transfer components when the proton is initially in motion and compare them to the 2H data measured at the Mainz Microtron (MAMI). We show the ratios of the transverse ( P x ) and longitudinal ( P z ) components of the polarization transfer in H 2 ( e → , e ′ p → ) n , to those of elastic scattering off a “moving proton”, assuming the proton's initial (Fermi-motion) momentum equals the negative missing momentum in the measured reaction. We found that the correction due to the proton motion is up to 20% at high missing momentum. However the effect on the double ratio ( P x / P z ) A ( P x / P z ) H 1 is largely canceled out, as shown for both 2H and 12C data. This implies that the difference between the resting- and the moving-proton kinematics is not the primary cause for the deviations between quasi-elastic and elastic scattering reported previously.

The quasifree $\overrightarrow{\gamma} d\to\pi^0n(p)$ photon beam asymmetry, $\Sigma$, has been measured at photon energies, $E_\gamma$, from 390 to 610 MeV, corresponding to center of mass energy from 1.271 to 1.424 GeV, for the first time. The data were collected in the A2 hall of the MAMI electron beam facility with the Crystal Ball and TAPS calorimeters covering pion center-of-mass angles from 49 to 148$^\circ$. In this kinematic region, polarization observables are sensitive to contributions from the $\Delta (1232)$ and $N(1440)$ resonances. The extracted values of $\Sigma$ have been compared to predictions based on partial-wave analyses (PWAs) of the existing pion photoproduction database. Our comparison includes the SAID, MAID, and Bonn-Gatchina analyses; while a revised SAID fit, including the new $\Sigma$ measurements, has also been performed. In addition, isospin symmetry is examined as a way to predict $\pi^0n$ photoproduction observables, based on fits to published data in the channels $\pi^0p$, $\pi^+n$, and $\pi^-p$., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, 5 tables; fixed 2 glitches

The Compton double-polarization observable \ud Σ\ud 2\ud z\ud has been measured for the first time in the \ud Δ\ud (\ud 1232\ud )\ud resonance region using a circularly polarized photon beam incident on a longitudinally polarized proton target at the Mainz Microtron. This paper reports these results, together with the model-dependent extraction of four proton spin polarizabilities from fits to additional asymmetry data using either a dispersion relation calculation or a baryon chiral perturbation theory calculations with the weighted average of these two fits resulting in \ud γ\ud E\ud 1\ud E\ud 1\ud =\ud −\ud 2.87\ud ±\ud 0.52\ud ,\ud \ud γ\ud M\ud 1\ud M\ud 1\ud =\ud 2.70\ud ±\ud 0.43\ud ,\ud \ud γ\ud E\ud 1\ud M\ud 2\ud =\ud −\ud 0.85\ud ±\ud 0.72\ud , and \ud γ\ud M\ud 1\ud E\ud 2\ud =\ud 2.04\ud ±\ud 0.43\ud , in units of \ud 10\ud −\ud 4\ud fm\ud 4\ud .

Diabetic foot ulcers under the first metatarsal head are difficult to treat and prevent recurrence. The aim of this study is to summarize the results of a distal first metatarsal minimally invasive floating osteotomy for ulcers under the first metatarsal head in patients with diabetic neuropathy. We reviewed files of patients with diabetic neuropathy undergoing a floating first metatarsal osteotomy. Demographic and clinical data were collected and analyzed to determine success and complications. We found records for 21 patients (mean age 64) with University of Texas 1A ulcers. The ulcer’s mean age was 11.2 months. Following surgery, the ulcer completely resolved after a mean of 3.7 (2 to 11) weeks in 19 patients. During the first year, there were 4 complications related to the surgery (including 3 infections). At latest follow-up, 17/21 (81%) patients had healed with satisfactory results. Minimal invasive floating distal osteotomy of the first metatarsal can cure and prevent recurrence of diabetic foot ulcers under the first metatarsal head in 80% of the patients, but the ability to provide close follow-up and prompt response are prerequisites.

We report a measurement of the spin polarization of the recoiling neutron in deuterium photodisintegration, utilizing a new large acceptance polarimeter within the Crystal Ball at MAMI. The measured photon energy range of 300-700 MeV provides the first measurement of recoil neutron polarization at photon energies where the quark substructure of the deuteron plays a role, thereby providing important new constraints on photodisintegration mechanisms. A very high neutron polarization in a narrow structure centered around E_{γ}∼570 MeV is observed, which is inconsistent with current theoretical predictions employing nucleon resonance degrees of freedom. A Legendre polynomial decomposition suggests this behavior could be related to the excitation of the d^{*}(2380) hexaquark.

We report the measurements of the transverse ($P'x$) and longitudinal ($P'z$) components of the polarization transfer to a bound proton in carbon via the quasi-free $^{12}{\rm C}(\vec e,e'\vec p)$ reaction, over a wide range of missing momenta. We determine these polarization-transfers separately for protons knocked out from the $s$- and $p$-shells. The electron-beam polarization was measured to determine the individual components with systematic uncertainties which allow a detailed comparison with theoretical calculations.

We present measurements of the electron helicity asymmetry in quasi-elastic proton knockout from 2H and 12C nuclei by polarized electrons. This asymmetry depends on the fifth structure function, is antisymmetric with respect to the scattering plane, and vanishes in the absence of final-state interactions, and thus it provides a sensitive tool for their study. Our kinematics cover the full range in off-coplanarity angle ϕ p q , with a polar angle θ p q coverage up to about 8°. The missing energy resolution enabled us to determine the asymmetries for knock-out resulting in different states of the residual 11B system. We find that the helicity asymmetry for p-shell knockout from 12C depends on the final state of the residual system and is relatively large (up to ≈0.16), especially at low missing momentum. It is considerably smaller (up to ≈0.01) for s-shell knockout from both 12C and 2H. The data for 2H are in very good agreement with theoretical calculations, while the predictions for 12C exhibit differences with respect to the data.

Possible differences between free and bound protons may be observed in the ratio of polarization-transfer components, $P'_x/P'_z$. We report the measurement of $P'_x/P'_z$, in the $^2\textrm{H}(\vec{e},e^{\prime}\vec{p})n$ reaction at low and high missing momenta. Observed increasing deviation of $P'_x/P'_z$ from that of a free proton as a function of the virtuality, similar to that observed in \hefour, indicates that the effect in nuclei is due to the virtuality of the knock-out proton and not due to the average nuclear density. The measured differences from calculations assuming free-proton form factors ($\sim10\%$), may indicate in-medium modifications., 4 figures

Measurements of elastic electron scattering data within the past decade have highlighted two-photon exchange contributions as a necessary ingredient in theoretical calculations to precisely evaluate hydrogen elastic scattering cross sections. This correction can modify the cross section at the few percent level. In contrast, dispersive effects can cause significantly larger changes from the Born approximation. The purpose of this experiment is to extract the carbon-12 elastic cross section around the first diffraction minimum, where the Born term contributions to the cross section are small to maximize the sensitivity to dispersive effects. The analysis uses the LEDEX data from the high resolution Jefferson Lab Hall A spectrometers to extract the cross sections near the first diffraction minimum of $$^{12}$$ C at beam energies of 362 MeV and 685 MeV. The results are in very good agreement with previous world data, although with less precision. The average deviation from a static nuclear charge distribution expected from linear and quadratic fits indicate a 30.6% contribution of dispersive effects to the cross section at 1 GeV. The magnitude of the dispersive effects near the first diffraction minimum of $$^{12}$$ C has been confirmed to be large with a strong energy dependence and could account for a large fraction of the magnitude for the observed quenching of the longitudinal nuclear response. These effects could also be important for nuclei radii extracted from parity-violating asymmetries measured near a diffraction minimum.

Short Range Correlations (SRCs) have been identified as being responsible for the high momentum tail of the nucleon momentum distribution, n(k). Hard, short-range interactions of nucleon pairs generate the high momentum tail and imprint a universal character on n(k) for all nuclei at large momentum. Triple coincidence experiments have shown a strong dominance of np pairs, but these measurements involve large final state interactions. This paper presents the results from Jefferson Lab experiment E08014 which measured inclusive electron scattering cross-section from Ca isotopes. By comparing the inclusive cross section from 48Ca to 40Ca in a kinematic region dominated by SRCs we provide a new way to study the isospin structure of SRCs., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

The γ n → π 0 n differential cross section evaluated for 27 energy bins span the photon-energy range 290–813 MeV ( W = 1.195 –1.553 GeV) and the pion c.m. polar production angles, ranging from 18 ∘ to 162 ∘ , making use of model-dependent nuclear corrections to extract π 0 production data on the neutron from measurements on the deuteron target. Additionally, the total photoabsorption cross section was measured. The tagged photon beam produced by the 883 MeV electron beam of the Mainz Microtron MAMI was used for the π 0 -meson production. Our accumulation of 3.6 × 10 6 γ n → π 0 n events allowed a detailed study of the reaction dynamics. Our data are in reasonable agreement with previous A2 measurements and extend them to lower energies. The data are compared with predictions of previous said, maid, and BnGa partial-wave analyses and to the latest said fit MA19 that included our data. Selected photon-decay amplitudes N ∗ → γ n at the resonance poles are determined for the first time.

We review the design, simulation, and tests, of a detection system for measuring the energy distribution of daughter nuclei recoiling from the beta-decay of laser trapped neon isotopes. This distribution is sensitive to several new physics effects in the weak sector. Our `decay microscope' relies on imaging the velocity distribution of high energy recoil ions in coincidence with electrons shaken-off in the decay. We demonstrate by way of Monte-Carlo simulation, that the nuclear microscope increases the statistical sensitivity of kinematic measurements to the underlying energy distribution, and limits the main systematic bias caused by discrepancy in the trap position along the detection axis.

We present an experimental scheme which combines the well established method of velocity-mapimaging, with a cold trapped metastable neon target. The device is used for obtaining the branching ratios and recoil-ion energy distributions for the penning ionization process in optical collisions of ultracold metastable neon. The potential depth of the highly excited dimer potential is extracted and compared with theoretical calculations. The simplicity to construct, characterize and apply such a device, makes it a unique tool for the low-energy nuclear physics community, enabling opportunities for precision measurements in beta- and beta-delayed-neutron decays of cold, trapped, short-lived radioactive isotopes.

We report precision measurements of the $^{20}\mathrm{Ne}$--$^{22}\mathrm{Ne}$ isotope shift for several transitions, as well as state-of-the-art, ab initio field-shift calculations. Our results are combined with historical measurements in a global fit to obtain the isotope shifts of all 50 low-lying neon levels with high precision. These level shifts show a wealth of electronic, nuclear, and relativistic phenomena. Relying on the analogy between mass shift and fine-structure operators, we explain this plethora of neon level shifts utilizing a small number of effective parameters in a global parametric investigation. This investigation provides a birds-eye view on the isotope shift phenomena in noble gasses. From this vantage point, we reinterpret every effort made to calculate neon mass shifts ab initio and show that a remarkable agreement between experiment and theory is obtained.

International audience; We report on new p(e,e′p)π∘p(e,e′p)π∘ measurements at the Δ+(1232)Δ+(1232) resonance at the low momentum transfer region, where the mesonic cloud dynamics is predicted to be dominant and rapidly changing, offering a test bed for chiral effective field theory calculations. The new data explore the Q2Q2 dependence of the resonant quadrupole amplitudes and for the first time indicate that the Electric and the Coulomb quadrupole amplitudes converge as Q2→0Q2→0. The measurements of the Coulomb quadrupole amplitude have been extended to the lowest momentum transfer ever reached, and suggest that more than half of its magnitude is attributed to the mesonic cloud in this region. The new data disagree with predictions of constituent quark models and are in reasonable agreement with dynamical calculations that include pion cloud effects, chiral effective field theory and lattice calculations. The measurements indicate that improvement is required to the theoretical calculations and provide valuable input that will allow their refinements.

The Muon Scattering Experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institut uses a mixed beam of electrons, muons, and pions, necessitating precise timing to identify the beam particles and reactions they cause. We describe the design and performance of three timing detectors using plastic scintillator read out with silicon photomultipliers that have been built for the experiment. The Beam Hodoscope, upstream of the scattering target, counts the beam flux and precisely times beam particles both to identify species and provide a starting time for time-of-flight measurements. The Beam Monitor, downstream of the scattering target, counts the unscattered beam flux, helps identify background in scattering events, and precisely times beam particles for time-of-flight measurements. The Beam Focus Monitor, mounted on the target ladder under the liquid hydrogen target inside the target vacuum chamber, is used in dedicated runs to sample the beam spot at three points near the target center, where the beam should be focused., Fixed typos, added references, and rephrased some sections to be clearer. We report measurements of the induced polarization P → of protons knocked out from 2H and 12C via the A ( e , e ′ p → ) reaction. We have studied the dependence of P → on two kinematic variables: the missing momentum p miss and the “off-coplanarity” angle ϕ p q between the scattering and reaction planes. For the full 360° range in ϕ p q , both the normal ( P y ) and, for the first time, the transverse ( P x ) components of the induced polarization were measured with respect to the coordinate system associated with the scattering plane. P x vanishes in coplanar kinematics, however in non-coplanar kinematics, it is on the same scale as P y . We find that the dependence on ϕ p q is sine-like for P x and cosine-like for P y . For carbon, the magnitude of the induced polarization is especially large when protons are knocked out from the p 3 / 2 shell at very small p miss . For the deuteron, the induced polarization is near zero at small | p miss | , and its magnitude increases with | p miss | . For both nuclei such behavior is reproduced qualitatively by theoretical results, driven largely by the spin-orbit part of the final-state interactions. However, for both nuclei, sizeable discrepancies exist between experiment and theory.

We present the first measurements of the double ratio of the polarization-transfer components ( P x ′ / P z ′ ) p / ( P x ′ / P z ′ ) s for knock-out protons from the s and p shells in C 12 measured by the C 12 ( e → , e ′ p → ) reaction in quasi-elastic kinematics. The data are compared to theoretical predictions in the relativistic distorted-wave impulse approximation. Our results show that the differences between s- and p-shell protons, observed when compared at the same initial momentum (missing momentum), largely disappear when the comparison is done at the same proton virtuality. We observe no difference in medium modifications between protons from the s and p shells with the same virtuality in spite of the large differences in the respective nuclear densities.

We present measurements of the polarization-transfer components in the H2(e→,e′p→) reaction, covering a previously unexplored kinematic region with large positive (anti-parallel) missing momentum, pmiss, up to 220MeV/c, and Q2=0.65 (GeV/c)2. These measurements, performed at the Mainz Microtron (MAMI), were motivated by theoretical calculations which predict small final-state interaction (FSI) effects in these kinematics, making them favorable for searching for medium modifications of bound nucleons in nuclei. We find in this kinematic region that the measured polarization-transfer components Px and Pz and their ratio agree with the theoretical calculations, which use free-proton form factors. Using this, we establish upper limits on possible medium effects that modify the bound proton's form factor ratio GE/GM at the level of a few percent. We also compare the measured polarization-transfer components and their ratio for $^{2}$H to those of a free (moving) proton. We find that the universal behavior of $^{2}$H, $^{4}$He and $^{12}$C in the double ratio (Px/Pz)A(Px/Pz)H1 is maintained in the positive missing-momentum region.

A slow positron facility is being built in Israel, at the Hebrew University, for basic and applied research. It consists of a slow positron beam and a compact Positrons Annihilation Lifetime (PAL) spectrometer. The slow positron beam follows a traditional design, using a 22Na source, of about 40mCi, a Tungsten moderator and a unique grounded target cell, with positrons energy that can vary between 0.03 keV and 30 keV. The detection system will be comprised of High Purity Germanium and BaF2 detectors, facing each other, for low background Doppler Broadening (DB) measurements. The target cell is designed to allow a combined measurement of sample conductivity and DB, with the flexibility to add more detection options in the future. The compact PAL spectrometer includes two fast scintillation detectors read by a fast digitizer (DRS4), with a sampling rate of 5.12 GS/s. A dedicated software package was developed to emulate analogue data acquisition. Lifetime measurements were performed using a ∼25 µCi 22Na source. The time resolution was defined using a 60Co source, to be 180-200ps. First positron lifetime validation measurements of Ti resulted in positrons lifetime of 157 ± 4 ps, consistent with previously published values.A slow positron facility is being built in Israel, at the Hebrew University, for basic and applied research. The detection system will be comprised of High Purity Germanium and BaF2 detectors, facing each other, for low background Doppler Broadening (DB) measurements. The target cell is designed to allow a combined measurement of sample conductivity and DB, with the flexibility to add more detection options in the future. The compact PAL spectrometer includes two fast scintillation detectors read by a fast digitizer (DRS4), with a sampling rate of 5.12 GS/s. The beam-helicity asymmetry was measured, for the first time, in photoproduction of $\pi^{0}\eta$ pairs on carbon, aluminum, and lead, with the A2 experimental setup at MAMI. The results are compared to an earlier measurement on a free proton and to the corresponding theoretical calculations. The Mainz model is used to predict the beam-helicity asymmetry for the nuclear targets. The present results indicate that the photoproduction mechanism for $\pi^{0}\eta$ pairs on nuclei is similar to photoproduction on a free nucleon. This process is dominated by the $D_{33}$ partial wave with the $\eta\Delta(1232)$ intermediate state., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physics Letters B (2020)

We review the current status of the radioisotopes program at the Soreq Applied Research Accelerator Facility (SARAF), where we utilize an electrostatic-ion-beam trap and a magneto-optical trap for studying the nuclear $\beta$-decay from trapped radioactive atoms and ions. The differential energy spectra of $\beta$'s and recoil ions emerging from the decay is sensitive to beyond standard model interactions and is complementary to high energy searches. The completed facility SARAF-II will be one of the world's most powerful deuteron, proton and fast neutron sources, producing light radioactive isotopes in unprecedented amounts, needed for obtaining enough statistics for a high precision measurement.

An experimental study of the η′→π0π0η→6γ decay has been conducted with the best up-to-date statistical accuracy, by measuring η′ mesons produced in the γp→η′p reaction with the A2 tagged-photon facility at the Mainz Microtron, MAMI. The results obtained for the standard parametrization of the η′→π0π0η matrix element are consistent with the most recent results for η′→ππη decays, but have smaller uncertainties. The available statistics and experimental resolution allowed, for the first time, an observation of a structure below the π+π- mass threshold, the magnitude and sign of which, checked within the framework of the nonrelativistic effective-field theory, demonstrated good agreement with the cusp that was predicted based on the ππ scattering length combination, a0-a2, extracted from K→3π decays.

We report the first measurements of the transverse (Px and Py) and longitudinal (Pz) components of the polarization transfer to a bound proton in the deuteron via the H2(e→,e′p→) reaction, over a wide range of missing momentum. A precise determination of the electron beam polarization reduces the systematic uncertainties on the individual components to a level that enables a detailed comparison to a state-of-the-art calculation of the deuteron using free-proton electromagnetic form factors. We observe very good agreement between the measured and the calculated Px/Pz ratios, but deviations of the individual components. Our results cannot be explained by medium modified electromagnetic form factors. They point to an incomplete description of the nuclear reaction mechanism in the calculation.

Taqī al‑Dīn al‑Maqrīzī’s (d. 845/1442) universal history, titled al‑Ḫabar ʿan al‑basar, contains a chapter “On the Brigands Among the Arabs” (faṣl fī ḏikr luṣūṣ al‑ʿArab), in which the author gives accounts of the lives and exploits of ten pre-Islamic and early-Islamic brigands. While the chapter relies on earlier sources, its subject matter has no parallel in other Arabic works of universal history, contemporaneous or earlier. My paper is a study of this chapter, based on a holograph of al‑Maqrīzī’s work. A close reading of the chapter’s contents reveals that al‑Maqrīzī compiled and edited afresh ancient narratives with the intention of exemplifying the ideological opposition between ǧāhiliyya and Islam. I draw special attention to al‑Maqrīzī’s unique report concerning the death and burial of Taʾabbaṭa Sarran, which portrays him as an antithesis to the figure of the sahīd. Finally, I suggest that al‑Maqrīzī’s chapter is a scholarly response both to the socio-political climate of al‑Maqrīzī’s Egypt, depicted in some of al‑Maqrīzī’s other works as fraught with Bedouin rebellions, as well as to the prevailing cultural climate, marked with the rise of the popular Sīra.

We present new data probing short-range correlations (SRCs) in nuclei through the measurement of electron scattering off high-momentum nucleons in nuclei. The inclusive 4He/3He cross section ratio is observed to be both x and Q2 independent for 1.5 < x < 2, confirming the dominance of two- nucleon (2N) short-range correlations (SRCs). For x > 2, our data do not support a previous claim of three-nucleon (3N) correlation dominance. While contributions beyond those from stationary 2N- SRCs are observed, our data show that isolating 3N-SRCs is more complicated than for 2N-SRCs., 6 pages, 2 figures, new experimental results from JLab E08-014

We report the first large-acceptance measurement of the beam–spin asymmetry for deuteron photodisintegration (γ→d→pn) in the photon energy range 420

A novel experiment has been commissioned at the Weizmann Institute of Science for the study of weak interactions via a high-precision measurement of the beta–neutrinoangular correlation in the radioactive decay of short-lived 6He. The facility consists of a 14 MeV d + t neutron generator to produce atomic 6 He, followed by ionization and bunching in an electron beam ion source, and injection into an electrostatic ion beam trap. This ion trap has been designed for efficient detection of the decay products from trapped light ions . The storage time in the trap for different stable ions was found to be in the range of 0.6 to 1.2 s at the chamber pressure of ∼ 7 × 10−10 mbar. We present the initial test results of the facility, and also demonstrate an important upgrade of an existing method (Stora et al., 2012) for production of light radioactive atoms, viz. 6He, for the precision measurement. The production rate of 6He atoms in the present setup has been estimated to be ∼ 1 . 45 × 1 0 − 4 atoms per neutron, and the system efficiency was found to be 4.0 ± 0.6%. An improvement to this setup is also presented for the enhanced production and diffusion of radioactive atoms for future use.
