The paper presents the application of advanced mechanical testing methods for determining the bone mechanical properties. Research were conducted using the compression test with the Digital Image Correlation system for displacement and strain measurements. Additionally the FE numerical model was build on the base of scans from X-ray micro-computed tomography (XMT) using the specialized software. The non-homogenous material properties were assumed. Simulation were performed using the MSC.Nastran solver. Finally, results from experiment were compared with numerical calculations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The solvent casting method was used for five types of polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) nanocomposite film preparation. The effect of nanofillers in PVDF nanocomposite films on the structural, phase, and friction and mechanical properties was examined and compared with that of the natural PVDF film. The surface topography of PVDF nanocomposite films was investigated using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and correlative imaging (CPEM, combinate AFM and SEM). A selection of 2D CPEM images was used for a detailed study of the spherulitic morphologies (grains size around 6-10 μm) and surface roughness (value of 50-68 nm). The chemical interactions were evaluated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Dominant polar γ-phase in the original PVDF, PVDF_ZnO and PVDF_ZnO/V, the most stable non-polar α-phase in the PVDF_V_CH nanocomposite film and mixture of γ and α phases in the PVDF_V and PVDF_ZnO/V_CH nanocomposite films were confirmed. Moderately hydrophilic PVDF nanocomposite films with water contact angle values (WCA) in the range of 58°-69° showed surface stability with respect to the Zeta potential values. The effect of positive or negative Zeta-potential values of nanofillers (ζ n ) on the resulting negative Zeta-potential values (ζ) of PVDF nanocomposite films was demonstrated. Interaction of PVDF chains with hydroxy groups of vermiculite and amino and imino groups of CH caused transformation of γ-phase to α. The friction properties were evaluated based on the wear testing and mechanical properties were evaluated from the tensile tests based on Young's modulus (E) and tensile strength (Rm) values. Used nanofillers caused decreasing of friction and mechanical properties of PVDF nanocomposite material films.

Many diseases and conditions can alter an ability to maintain body balance. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether thoracic surgery may elicit diaphragm dysfunction thereby impairing postural stability. 40 patients qualified to video-assisted thoracoscopy (VATS) lobectomy or lobectomy via thoracotomy due to pulmonary carcinoma were examined two times: a day before lung resection and 3-5 days after surgical procedure. Diaphragm assessment was performed using ultrasonography, while postural sways were evaluated by Zebris FDM-S stabilometric platform. Thoracic surgery was associated with decrease of diaphragm thickness and movement, as well as, with deterioration of static body balance maintenance. Upper lobe resection was linked with greater diaphragm excursion restriction and worse body sway parameters than middle and lower lobe resection. VATS lobectomy was associated with better postoperative diaphragm function and better postural sway parameters than lobectomy via thoracotomy. Patients after lobectomy via thoracotomy had significantly more load on lower limb on the operated side than patients after VATS lobectomy. Impairment of diaphragm function is closely associated with equilibrium impairment after pulmonary resection. VATS lobectomy was less invasive than lobectomy via thoracotomy in terms of primary respiratory muscle function and body balance maintenance parameters., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

The influence of dynamic loads resulting from human motor activity and electrocorrosion inside the human body on the strength parameters of artificial joint elements has not yet been investigated. Hip joint arthroplasty is the most common surgical procedure in the world that allows doctors to remove pain and restore motor skills in people with severe hip diseases, after accidents, and in the elderly. Based on the reports, this article assesses changes in the number of implanted endoprostheses in the years 2005-2019 and determines the trends and estimated changes in the number of implanted hip prostheses in the following decades. The study assesses changes in selected strength parameters of UHMW-PE polyethylene inserts of hip joint endoprostheses during their use in the human body. The research was carried out on appropriately collected samples from UHMW-PE cups removed from the human body with a known history and lifetime from 4 to 10 years. Patients' body weight ranged from 735 [N] to 820 [N], and the declared physical activity was similar in the entire research group. As part of the research, the values of changes in dynamic modules and the mechanical loss coefficient were determined in relation to the share of the crystalline and amorphous phases of artificial UHMW-PE cups, removed from the human body after different periods of exploitation under similar operating conditions. The analysis of selected strength parameters was performed at a temperature of 40 °C, which corresponds to the working conditions inside the human body. On the basis of numerical studies, the influence of changes in material parameters on the deformation of the artificial acetabulum during the patient's motor activity, which is one of the causes of fatigue destruction, was determined.

Attacks with improvised explosive device (IED) constituted the main threat to, for example, Polish soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. Improving safety during transport in an armored vehicle has become an important issue. The main purpose of the presented research is to investigate the mechanism of lower leg injuries during explosion under an armored vehicle. Using a numerical anatomic model of the lower leg, the analysis of the leg position was carried out. In all presented positions, the stress limit of 160 (MPa) was reached, which indicates bone damage. Infection with pathogenic microorganisms is of great concern in many areas, especially in healthcare, but also in food packaging and storage, or in water purification systems. Antimicrobial polymer nanocomposites have gained great popularity in these areas. Therefore, this study focused on new approaches to develop thin antimicrobial films based on biodegradable polycaprolactone (PCL) with clay mineral natural vermiculite as a carrier for antimicrobial compounds, where the active organic antimicrobial component is antifungal ciclopirox olamine (CPX). For possible synergistic effects, a sample in combination with the inorganic antimicrobial active ingredient zinc oxide was also prepared. The structures of all the prepared samples were studied by X-ray diffraction, FTIR analysis and, predominantly, by SEM. The very different structure properties of the prepared nanofillers had a fundamental influence on the final structural arrangement of thin PCL nanocomposite films as well as on their mechanical, thermal, and surface properties. As sample PCL/ZnOVER_CPX possessed the best results for antimicrobial activity against examined microbial strains, the synergic effect of CPX and ZnO combination on antimicrobial activity was proved, but on the other hand, its mechanical resistance was the lowest.

This work aimed to assess the impact of acellularization and sterilization methods on the mechanical properties of biocomposites used as a skin substitute. On the basis of the statistical analysis, it was ascertained that the values of the Young modulus for the samples before the sterilization process-only in the cases of substances such as: trypsin, 15% glycerol and dispase-changed in a statistically significant way. In the case of dispase, the Young modulus value before the sterilization process amounted to 66.6 MPa, for trypsin this value equalled 33.9 MPa, whereas for 15% glycerol it was 11 MPa. In the case of samples after the completion of the sterilization process, the analysis did not show any statistically significant differences between the obtained results of Young's modulus depending on the respective reagents applied. It was confirmed that different methods of acellularization and the process of sterilization effect the alteration of mechanical properties of allogeneic skins. In the case of the decellularization method using SDS (Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate), liquid nitrogen and 85% glycerol the highest values of strain were observed. In the authors' opinion, it is the above-mentioned methods that should be recommended in the process of preparation of skin substitutes.

Despite the obvious benefits of using ureteral stents to drain the ureters, there is also a risk of complications from 80-90%. The presence of a foreign body in the human body causes disturbances in its proper functioning. It can lead to biofilm formation on the stent surface, which may favor the development of urinary tract infections or the formation of encrustation, as well as stent fragmentation, complicating its subsequent removal. In this work, the effect of the polymeric coating containing the active substance-papaverine hydrochloride on the functional properties of ureteral stents significant for clinical practice were assessed. Methods: The most commonly clinically used polyurethane ureteral Double-J stent was selected for the study. Using the dip-coating method, the surface of the stent was coated with a poly(D,L-lactide-glycolide) (PLGA) coating containing the papaverine hydrochloride (PAP). In particular, strength properties, retention strength of the stent ends, dynamic frictional force, and the fluoroscopic visibility of the stent during X-ray imaging were determined. Results: The analysis of the test results indicates the usefulness of a biodegradable polymer coating containing the active substance for the modification of the surface of polyurethane ureteral stents. The stents coated with PLGA+PAP coating compared to polyurethane stents are characterized by more favorable strength properties, the smaller value of the dynamic frictional force, without reducing the fluoroscopic visibility.

Although new therapeutic approaches for burn treatment have made progress, there is still need for efficient coverage of donor fields. Promising dressing for skin graft donor site should be biocompatible, attach easily to the wound bed, remain in place until donor site has renewed, and decrease morbidity at the site. Porcine skin may be applied as a dressing for severe burns. Therefore pig skin xenografts can be used also as donor field coverage. In the Burn Treatment Centre, we used gauze soaked in Vaseline to secure donor fields. The aim of the study was to check if transgenic porcine skin is better than standard in donor site coverage used in our center. We showed that dressing reduces pain experienced by patients. The dressing leads to a reduction of hospitalization time by an average of 8 days. The dressing is as safe as the gold standard. Securing the donor field reduces the risk of colonization of the wound in the second smear after application by 60%. The disadvantage of the dressing is the inability to absorb blood; the use of hemostatic ointments in combination with the skin of transgenic pigs should be considered in the future., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Inc. Purpose: The aim of this paper was the development of a finite element model of the soldier's head to assess injuries suffered by soldiers during blast under a light armoured vehicle., Methods: The application of a multibody wheeled armoured vehicle model, including the crew and their equipment, aenabled the researchers to analyse the most dangerous scenarios of the head injury. These scenarios have been selected for a detailed analysis using the finite element head model which allowed for the examination of dynamic effects on individual head structures. In this paper, the authors described stages of the development of the anatomical finite element head model., Results: The results of the simulations made it possible to assess parameters determining the head injury of the soldier during the IED explosion. The developed model allows the determination of the parameters of stress, strain and pressure acting on the structures of the human head., Conclusion: In future studies, the model will be used to carry out simulations which will improve the construction of the headgear in order to minimize the possibility of the head injury.

Purpose: The aim of this paper was to evaluate which method of acellularization and sterilization is optimal, in the meaning of which processes have the least impact on the deterioration of mechanical properties of porcine tissues used for xenogeneic applications., Methods: The static tensile probe was conducted for 80 skin specimens obtained from transgenic swine, which are used as a wound dressing for skin recipient. Obtained data were subsequently analyzed with the use of statistical methods., Results: It was found that Young's modulus for the samples after the sterilization process for the dispase substance and the mixed method (SDS + trypsin) were statistically significantly changed. In the case of dispase, Young's modulus value before the sterilization process was 12.4 MPa and after the value increased to 28.0 MPa. For the mixed method (SDS + trypsin) before the sterilization process Young's modulus value was 5.6 MPa and after it was increased to 6.3 MPa. The mixed method (SDS + trypsin) had the slightest effect on changing the mechanical properties of the samples before and after the sterilization process., Conclusions: It was confirmed that different methods of acellularization and the process of sterilization have an influence on the change of mechanical properties of the skin of transgenic swine. In the authors' opinion, the mixed method (SDS + trypsin) should be recommended as the best one for the preparation of transgenic porcine dermal dressings because it ensures a smaller probability of dressing's damage during a surgical procedure.

The diaphragm is well known for its role as the principal muscle of respiration. However, according to previous studies, its role is multifactorial, from breathing through pain perception, regulation of emotional sphere, collaborating in gastroesophageal functions, facilitating the venous and lymphatic return, to an essential role in the maintenance of lumbar spine stability. The purpose of the study was to examine whether diaphragm function parameters (thickness and range of motion) are associated with static balance maintenance. A total of 142 participants were examined and divided into three groups: G1-patients qualified for lung resection due to cancer; G2 -patients after lobe resection; G3 -healthy subjects. Diaphragm thickness and excursion was measured using ultrasonography. Stabilometric parameters of balance were assessed by Zebris FDM-S platform. Greater diaphragm thickening during active breathing and diaphragm thickness fraction were associated with better static balance parameters. Limitation of diaphragm motion during quiet breathing and deep breathing was linked to balance disorders. There was no correlation between diaphragm muscle excursion during sniff maneuvers and balance parameters. Deterioration of diaphragm function observed after thoracic surgery was closely related with deterioration of balance maintenance. Impairment of diaphragm function manifested by decrease of muscle thickness and movement restriction is strongly associated with balance disorders in a clinical sample and among healthy subjects., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

In this paper, the application of new visualization technologies in correction of funnel chest is presented. Often, such defects cause problems with breathing, and therefore, to improve the cardiorespiratory efficiency, a correction is required. The virtual model of chest was formulated to determine the strains and stresses after correction of deformation with using the stabilizing plate. From biomechanical point of view, the knowledge of the load-affecting stabilizer is necessary to select optimal parameters of the plate. The force-affecting plate that was used in the correction of chest deformation by Nuss method was determined on the basis of finite element model of funnel chest. The paper discusses results of experimental research involving new generation of plate stabilizers used for the treatment of deformation of the front chest wall. Previous clinical monitoring revealed instances of minimal rotation, which caused destabilization of the anastomosis and pain in patients. In order to prevent this, transverse stabilizing plates were introduced to the structure of the stabilizer. The new structure of stabilizers was tested using two specially prepared research posts: 1 - which enables fastening of the plate stabilizers to a platform simulating human ribs, 2 - using a pig chest, to which plates were fastened according to the stabilization conditions in the stabilizer-chest structure. The tests recorded displacement values in selected areas of the plates in response to applied loading forces.
