Abstract: We present the first catalog of very-high-energy and ultra-high-energy gamma-ray sources detected by the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory. The catalog was compiled using 508 days of data collected by the Water Cherenkov Detector Array from 2021 March to 2022 September and 933 days of data recorded by the Kilometer Squared Array from 2020 January to 2022 September. This catalog represents the main result from the most sensitive large coverage gamma-ray survey of the sky above 1 TeV, covering decl. from −20° to 80°. In total, the catalog contains 90 sources with an extended size smaller than 2° and a significance of detection at >5 σ . Based on our source association criteria, 32 new TeV sources are proposed in this study. Among the 90 sources, 43 sources are detected with ultra-high energy ( E > 100 TeV) emission at >4 σ significance level. We provide the position, extension, and spectral characteristics of all the sources in this catalog.

Abstract: Abstract The focal plane camera is the core component of the Wide Field-of-view Cherenkov/fluorescence Telescope Array (WFCTA) of the Large High-Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). Because of the capability of working under moonlight without aging, silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) have been proven to be not only an alternative but also an improvement to conventional photomultiplier tubes (PMT) in this application. Eighteen SiPM-based cameras with square light funnels have been built for WFCTA. The telescopes have collected more than 100 million cosmic ray events and preliminary results indicate that these cameras are capable of working under moonlight. The characteristics of the light funnels and SiPMs pose challenges (e.g. dynamic range, dark count rate, assembly techniques). In this paper, we present the design features, manufacturing techniques and performances of these cameras. Finally, the test facilities, the test methods and results of SiPMs in the cameras are reported here.

3. Temporal Variability in Acoustic Behavior of Snapping Shrimp in the East China Sea and Its Correlation With Ocean Environments

Abstract: The snapping shrimp sound is known to be a major biological noise source of ocean soundscapes in coastal shallow waters of low and mid-latitudes where sunlight reaches. Several studies have been conducted to understand the activity of snapping shrimp through comparison with surrounding environmental factors. In this paper, we report the analysis of the sound produced by snapping shrimp inhabiting an area where sunlight rarely reaches. The acoustic measurements were taken in May 2015 using two 16-channel vertical line arrays (VLAs) moored at a depth of about 100 m, located ∼100 km southwest of Jeju Island, South Korea, as part of the Shallow-water Acoustic Variability Experiment (SAVEX-15). During the experiment, the underwater soundscape was dominated by the broadband impulsive snapping shrimp noise, which is notable considering that snapping shrimp are commonly observed at very shallow depths of tens of meters or less where sunlight can easily reach. To extract snapping events in the ambient noise data, an envelope correlation combined with an amplitude threshold detection algorithm were applied, and then the sea surface-bounced path was filtered out using a kurtosis value of the waveform to avoid double-counting in snap rate estimates. The analysis of the ambient noise data received for 5 consecutive days indicated that the snap rate fluctuated with a strong one-quarter-diurnal variation between 200 and 1,200 snaps per minute, which is distinguished from the periodicity of the snap rate reported in the euphotic zone. The temporal variation in the snap rate is compared with several environmental factors such as water temperature, tidal level, and current speed. It is found that the snap rate has a significant correlation with the current speed, suggesting that snapping shrimp living in the area with little sunlight might change their snapping behavior in response to changes in current speed.

4. An overview of array invariant for source-range estimation in shallow water

Abstract: Traditional matched-field processing (MFP) refers to array processing algorithms, which fully exploit the physics of wave propagation to localize underwater acoustic sources. As a generalization of plane wave beamforming, the “steering vectors,” or replicas, are solutions of the wave equation descriptive of the ocean environment. Thus, model-based MFP is inherently sensitive to environmental mismatch, motivating the development of robust methods. One such method is the array invariant (AI), which instead exploits the dispersion characteristics of broadband signals in acoustic waveguides, summarized by a single parameter known as the waveguide invariant β. AI employs conventional plane wave beamforming and utilizes coherent multipath arrivals (eigenrays) separated into beam angle and travel time for source-range estimation. Although originating from the ideal waveguide, it is applicable to many realistic shallow-water environments wherein the dispersion characteristics are similar to those in ideal waveguides. First introduced in 2006 and denoted by χ, the dispersion-based AI has been fully integrated with β. The remarkable performance and robustness of AI were demonstrated using various experimental data collected in shallow water, including sources of opportunity. Further, it was extended successfully to a range-dependent coastal environment with a sloping bottom, using an iterative approach and a small-aperture array. This paper provides an overview of AI, covering its basic physics and connection with β, comparison between MFP and AI, self-calibration of the array tilt, and recent developments such as adaptive AI, which can handle the dependence of β on the propagation angle, including steep-angle arrivals.

5. The waveguide invariant for a Pekeris waveguide

Abstract: A closed-form waveguide invariant β for a Pekeris waveguide is derived. It is based on the modal Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) dispersion equation and implicit differentiation, in conjunction with the concept of the "effective boundary depth," ΔH(θ), where θ is the propagation angle. First, an explicit formula for β(m,n) between mode pairs is obtained assuming an ideal waveguide of the effective waveguide depth, H+ΔH(θ), and provides an excellent agreement with the reference value for the Pekeris waveguide of depth H obtained using the normal mode program kraken. Abstract: Observation of high energy and very high emission from Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) is crucial to study the gigantic explosion and the underline processes. With a large field-of-view and almost full duty cycle, the Water Cherenkov Detector Array (WCDA), a sub-array of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO), is appropriate to monitor the very high energy emission from unpredictable transients such as GRBs. Nevertheless, the main issue for an extensive air shower array is the high energy threshold which limits the horizon of the detector. To address this issue a new trigger method is developed in this article to lower the energy threshold of WCDA for GRB observation. The proposed method significantly improves the detection efficiency of WCDA for gamma-rays around the GRB direction at 10-300 GeV. The sensitivity of the WCDA for GRB detection with the new trigger method is estimated. The achieved sensitivity of the quarter WCDA array above 10 GeV is comparable with that of Fermi-LAT. The data analysis process and corresponding fluence upper limit for GRB 190719C is presented as an example.

Abstract: The kilometer square array (KM2A) of the large high altitude air shower observatory (LHAASO) aims at surveying the northern γ-ray sky at energies above 10 TeV with unprecedented sensitivity. γ-ray observations have long been one of the most powerful tools for dark matter searches, as, e.g., high-energy γ rays could be produced by the decays of heavy dark matter particles. In this Letter, we present the first dark matter analysis with LHAASO-KM2A, using the first 340 days of data from 1/2-KM2A and 230 days of data from 3/4-KM2A. Several regions of interest are used to search for a signal and account for the residual cosmic-ray background after γ/hadron separation. We find no excess of dark matter signals, and thus place some of the strongest γ-ray constraints on the lifetime of heavy dark matter particles with mass between 105 and 109 GeV. Our results with LHAASO are robust, and have important implications for dark matter interpretations of the diffuse astrophysical high-energy neutrino emission.

Abstract: The main scientific goal of LHAASO-WCDA is to survey gamma-ray sources with energy from 100 GeV to 30 TeV. To observe high-energy shower events, especially to measure the energy spectrum of cosmic rays from 100 TeV to 10 PeV, a dynamic range extension system (WCDA++) is designed to use a 1.5-inch PMT with a dynamic range of four orders of magnitude for each cell in WCDA-1. The dynamic range is extended by using these PMTs to measure the effective charge density in the core region of air shower events, which is an important parameter for identifying the composition of primary particles. The system has been running for more than one year. In this paper, the details of the design and performance of WCDA++ are presented.

Abstract: The extension of the cosmic-ray spectrum beyond 1 petaelectronvolt (PeV; 1015 electronvolts) indicates the existence of the so-called PeVatrons—cosmic-ray factories that accelerate particles to PeV energies. We need to locate and identify such objects to find the origin of Galactic cosmic rays1. The principal signature of both electron and proton PeVatrons is ultrahigh-energy (exceeding 100 TeV) γ radiation. Evidence of the presence of a proton PeVatron has been found in the Galactic Centre, according to the detection of a hard-spectrum radiation extending to 0.04 PeV (ref. 2). Although γ-rays with energies slightly higher than 0.1 PeV have been reported from a few objects in the Galactic plane3–6, unbiased identification and in-depth exploration of PeVatrons requires detection of γ-rays with energies well above 0.1 PeV. Here we report the detection of more than 530 photons at energies above 100 teraelectronvolts and up to 1.4 PeV from 12 ultrahigh-energy γ-ray sources with a statistical significance greater than seven standard deviations. Despite having several potential counterparts in their proximity, including pulsar wind nebulae, supernova remnants and star-forming regions, the PeVatrons responsible for the ultrahigh-energy γ-rays have not yet been firmly localized and identified (except for the Crab Nebula), leaving open the origin of these extreme accelerators. Observations of γ-rays with energies up to 1.4 PeV find that 12 sources in the Galaxy are PeVatrons, one of which is the Crab Nebula.

Abstract: We report the discovery of a new unidentified extended $\gamma$-ray source in the Galactic plane named LHAASO J0341+5258 with a pre-trial significance of 8.2 standard deviations above 25 TeV. The best fit position is R.A.$=55.34^{\circ}\pm0.11^{\circ}$ and Dec$=52.97^{\circ}\pm0.07^{\circ}$. The angular size of LHAASO J0341+5258 is $0.29^\circ \pm 0.06^\circ_{stat} \pm0.02^\circ_{sys}$. The flux above 25 TeV is about $20\%$ of the flux of Crab Nebula. Although a power-law fit of the spectrum from 10 TeV to 200 TeV with the photon index $\alpha=2.98 \pm 0.19_{stat} \pm 0.02_{sys}$ is not excluded, the LHAASO data together with the flux upper limit at 10 GeV set by the Fermi LAT observation, indicate a noticeable steepening of an initially hard power-law spectrum %($\alpha \leq 1.75$) spectrum with a cutoff at $\approx 50$ TeV. We briefly discuss the origin of UHE gamma-rays. The lack of an energetic pulsar and a young SNR inside or in the vicinity of LHAASO J0341+5258 challenge, but do not exclude both the leptonic and hadronic scenarios of gamma-ray production., Comment: Accepted by APJL

Abstract: Recently, the LHAASO Collaboration published the detection of 12 ultrahigh-energy γ-ray sources above 100 TeV, with the highest energy photon reaching 1.4 PeV. The first detection of PeV γ rays from astrophysical sources may provide a very sensitive probe of the effect of the Lorentz invariance violation (LIV), which results in decay of high-energy γ rays in the superluminal scenario and hence a sharp cutoff of the energy spectrum. Two highest energy sources are studied in this work. No signature of the existence of the LIV is found in their energy spectra, and the lower limits on the LIV energy scale are derived. Our results show that the first-order LIV energy scale should be higher than about 10^{5} times the Planck scale M_{Pl} and that the second-order LIV scale is10^{-3}M_{Pl}. Both limits improve by at least one order of magnitude the previous results.

Abstract: We report the discovery of an extended very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray source around the location of the middle-aged (207.8 kyr) pulsar PSR J0622+3749 with the Large High-Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). The source is detected with a significance of 8.2σ for E25 TeV assuming a Gaussian template. The best-fit location is (right ascension, declination) =(95.47°±0.11°,37.92°±0.09°), and the extension is 0.40°±0.07°. The energy spectrum can be described by a power-law spectrum with an index of -2.92±0.17_{stat}±0.02_{sys}. No clear extended multiwavelength counterpart of the LHAASO source has been found from the radio to sub-TeV bands. The LHAASO observations are consistent with the scenario that VHE electrons escaped from the pulsar, diffused in the interstellar medium, and scattered the interstellar radiation field. If interpreted as the pulsar halo scenario, the diffusion coefficient, inferred for electrons with median energies of ∼160 TeV, is consistent with those obtained from the extended halos around Geminga and Monogem and much smaller than that derived from cosmic ray secondaries. The LHAASO discovery of this source thus likely enriches the class of so-called pulsar halos and confirms that high-energy particles generally diffuse very slowly in the disturbed medium around pulsars.

Abstract: We report the discovery of a UHE gamma-ray source, LHAASO J2108+5157, by analyzing the LHAASO-KM2A data of 308.33 live days. Significant excess of gamma-ray induced showers is observed in both energy bands of 25-100 TeV and $\gt$100 TeV with 9.5 sigma and 8.5 sigma, respectively. This source is not significantly favored as an extensive source with the angular extension smaller than the point-spread function of KM2A. The measured energy spectrum from 20 to 200 TeV can be approximately described by a power-law function with an index of -2.83$\pm$ 0.18stat. A harder spectrum is demanded at lower energies considering the flux upper limit set by Fermi-LAT observations. The position of the gamma-ray emission is correlated with a giant molecular cloud, which favors a hadronic origin. No obvious counterparts have been found, deeper multiwavelength observations will help to shed new light on this intriguing UHE source., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, accepted by ApJL

Abstract: The main scientific goal of the LHAASO WFCTA experiment is to measure the cosmic ray energy spectra and composition from 10 TeV to 1 EeV. Cherenkov photons in the extensive air shower measured by the SiPM camera of Cherenkov telescopes can be used to reconstruct the cosmic ray energy. The absolute calibration of the camera is a crucial step to achieve the accurate measurement of the cosmic ray energy spectrum. A multi-wavelength cylindrical illuminator based on LEDs is developed and mounted inside the telescope to calibrate and monitor the camera, and the illuminator’s stability is better than 0.5% under the temperature variation from -26 to 26 ° C. A portable probe with a single photoelectron resolution of 21.6% is developed. After calibration by National Institute of Metrology, China (NIM), the probe is taken to the LHAASO site to measure the absolute photon density of the cylindrical illuminator inside the telescope. Based on the illuminator with known photon density, the photon conversion factor of the camera can be calibrated, and the overall calibration uncertainty is less than 2.6%.

Abstract: The LHAASO-WFCTA experiment, which aims to observe cosmic rays in the sub-EeV range using the fluorescence technique, uses a new generation of high-performance telescopes. To ensure that the experiment has excellent detection capability associated with the measurement of the energy spectrum, the primary composition of cosmic rays, and so on, an accurate geometrical reconstruction of air-shower events is fundamental. This paper describes the development and testing of geometrical reconstruction for stereo viewed events using the WFCTA (Wide Field of view Cherenkov/Fluorescence Telescope Array) detectors. Two approaches, which take full advantage of the WFCTA detectors, are investigated. One is the stereo-angular method, which uses the pointing of triggered SiPMs in the shower trajectory, and the other is the stereo-timing method, which uses the triggering time of the fired SiPMs. The results show that both methods have good geometrical resolution; the resolution of the stereo-timing method is slightly better than the stereo-angular method because the resolution of the latter is slightly limited by the shower track length.

Abstract: A sub-array of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO), KM2A is mainly designed to observe a large fraction of the northern sky to hunt for γ-ray sources at energies above 10 TeV. Even though the detector construction is still underway, half of the KM2A array has been operating stably since the end of 2019. In this paper, we present the KM2A data analysis pipeline and the first observation of the Crab Nebula, a standard candle in very high energy γ-ray astronomy. We detect γ-ray signals from the Crab Nebula in both energy ranges of 10 100 TeV and 100 TeV with high significance, by analyzing the KM2A data of 136 live days between December 2019 and May 2020. With the observations, we test the detector performance, including angular resolution, pointing accuracy and cosmic-ray background rejection power. The energy spectrum of the Crab Nebula in the energy range 10-250 TeV fits well with a single power-law function dN/dE = (1.13 0.05 0.08 ) 10 (E/20 TeV) cm s TeV . It is consistent with previous measurements by other experiments. This opens a new window of γ-ray astronomy above 0.1 PeV through which new ultrahigh-energy γ-ray phenomena, such as cosmic PeVatrons, might be discovered.

Abstract: A strain of the fungus Gliocladium roseum YMF1.00133 was found to secrete nematicidal metabolites against nematodes Panagrellus redivivus, Caenothabditis elegans and Bursaphelenchus xylophilus in experiments searching for nematicidal fungi. Through bioassay-guided fractionations, a unique trioxopiperazine alkaloid, gliocladin C (compound 1), and an alkylane resorcinol, 5-n-heneicosylresorcinol (compound 2) were obtained from the methanol extract of the fungus and determined by single-crystal X-ray analysis and spectroscopic data. In vitro immersion experiments showed that the ED50 values of compounds 1 and 2 after 24 h incubation were 15 and 30 μg/mL against C. elegans, 50 and 80 μg/mL against P. redivivus, and 200 and 180 μg/mL against B. xylophilus, respectively. The X-ray diffraction data of compound 1 and the nematicidal activity of compounds 1 and 2 were reported for the first time.

Abstract: A diagnostic study was conducted to examine the effectiveness of malodor removal from a large-scale municipal waste treatment plant in an urban area. To this end, the odor pollution status was investigated from a total of 16 spots in the treatment facility to cover the dual treatment lines consisting of regenerative thermal oxidation (first stage) and a wet chemical scrubber (second stage). As a simple means to learn more about the odorant removal efficiency of different treatment units, samples collected from ambient spots as well as before and after each treatment unit were analyzed for 22 key offensive odorants (i.e., reduced sulfur compounds, carbonyl compounds, nitrogenous compounds, volatile organic compounds, and fatty acids) along with dilution-to-threshold ratios based on the air dilution sensory test. The removal patterns differed greatly between different odorant groups across different processing units. The effectiveness of this dual treatment system was optimized for such odorants as hydrogen sulfide and ammonia, while it was not the case for others (e.g., some aldehydes and organic acids). The results thus suggest the need for the validation of the efficiency in many types of odor processing units and for establishing new control techniques to cover a list of odorants un-subordinate to preexisting methods.

Abstract: While designing a ship's structure, the material cost of hull's weight and the overall cost of construction processes should be minimized considering safety and reliability. In the past, the minimum weight design has focused mainly on reducing material cost and increasing dead weight, which reflects the interests of a ship's owner. But, in the past experience, the minimum weight design has inevitably led to increasing the construction cost, making it necessary for ships' structural designers to consider both structural weight and construction cost. From this point of view, this study proposes a multi-objective optimization technique for designing ships' structures. According to the proposed algorithm, the results of optimization were compared to the structural design of an existing very large crude oil carrier. Abstract: It is generally believed that the spatial periodic variation of a dielectric constant $\ensuremath{\epsilon}$ or refractive index $\sqrt{\ensuremath{\mu}\ensuremath{\epsilon}}$ can give rise to photonic band gaps. However, through microwave experiments of microstrip lines with a periodic array of holes, we demonstrate that the wave impedance, which depends on $\sqrt{\ensuremath{\mu}/\ensuremath{\epsilon}}$, is an essential parameter, giving photonic band gaps rather than the refractive index. We explain physically the effect of the magnetic permeability $\ensuremath{\mu}$ on photonic band gaps, already reported.

Abstract: The combination of ocean acoustical physics and signal processing has been the central theme of our research over the last twenty years. In particular, the thrust of our research has been in matched field processing, waveguide invariant physics, time reversal acoustics, acoustic communications, sensitivity kernel analysis, and correlation based noised processing. Common to all these areas is the complexity of the medium so that our research goals have been to either overcome the downside of the complexity or, more interestingly, actually utilize propagation and noise complexity and diversity in the extraction of signal and environmental acoustic information. We present examples emphasizing this common theme.

The contributions of the flavor-symmetric sea-quark distributions and the nuclear EMC effect are taken into account to obtain the ratio of Drell-Yan cross sections $\sigma^{\mathrm{pD}}/2\sigma^{\mathrm{pp}}$, which can match well with the results measured in the FermiLab E866/NuSea experiment. The calculated results also match the measured $\bar{d}(x)-\bar{u}(x)$ from different experiments, but unmatch the behavior of $\bar{d}(x)/\bar{u}(x)$ derived indirectly from the measurable quantity $\sigma^{\mathrm{pD}}/2\sigma^{\mathrm{pp}}$ by the FermiLab E866/NuSea Collaboration at large $x$. We suggest to measure again $\bar{d}(x)/\bar{u}(x)$ at large $x$ from precision experiments with careful experimental data treatment. Abstract: We discuss the isospin symmetry breaking (ISB) of the valence- and sea-quark distributions between the proton and the neutron in the framework of the chiral quark model. We assume that isospin symmetry breaking is the result of mass differences between isospin multiplets and then analyze the effects of isospin symmetry breaking on the Gottfried sum rule and the NuTeV anomaly. We show that, although both flavor asymmetry in the nucleon sea and the ISB between the proton and the neutron can lead to the violation of the Gottfried sum rule, the main contribution is from the flavor asymmetry in the framework of the chiral quark model. We also find that the correction to the NuTeV anomaly is in an opposite direction, so the NuTeV anomaly cannot be removed by isospin symmetry breaking in the chiral quark model. Abstract: The reactor coolant piping system is designed to be in compliance with the requirements of Class 1 piping of Section III of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. Stress indices are required to evaluate the nuclear Class 1 piping. The reactor coolant system of Kori 1 nuclear power plant consists of a 2-loop system, each having two special elbows: one is the reducing elbow with a non-uniform thickness, and the other is the elbow with a splitter installed inside the elbow. However, stress indices for special elbows are not specified in NB-3683.7 of the ASME Code. In this paper, we computed the stress indices of special elbows for pressure and moment loads by the finite element analysis. The linear elastic method was used for the analysis with the finite element program, ANSYS, and the solid element (SOLID 45) was selected to model the geometry. The finite element model of the special elbows included a straight segment of pipe on each end of the elbows. The uniformly distributed internal pressure was applied to the pipe and elbow. The equivalent axial blow-off load was applied to one end, and the translational degree of freedom was fixed at the other end of the model. The moment was applied to one end, and the boundary condition was fixed at the other end of the model. Based on the analysis results, it is concluded that stress indices, except B1 , in NB-3683.7 of the ASME Code can be used for special elbows conservatively. More analyses are required to apply B1 index to the special elbows.Copyright © 2009 by ASME

Abstract: This was a joint project with MIT, Henrik Schmidt et al "separate ONR proposal" and SACLANTCEN "Stevenson and Jensen". The long term goals are to develop environmentally adaptive bi- and multi-static sonar concepts for autonomous off-board sensor networks for the detection and classification of proud, buried and waterborne targets in shallow water. SACLANTCEN provided three weeks of simultaneous sea time for both the R/V Alliance and R/V Leonardo during July 2004. MPL'S main contribution was to develop and test signal processing algorithms.

Abstract: We have shown numerically that, in a medium with attenuation, heat induced by acoustic focusing leads to refraction of acoustic waves and disturbs the focus. The effect observed at the focus is either a self-focusing or a self-defocusing of the acoustic beam depending on the sign of $ \frac{{dc}} {{dT}} $ in the medium. We have proposed a procedure to maintain focus in the zone of interest using phase-conjugation invariance properties.

Abstract: Mycoplasma haemosuis DNA was detected in experimentally infected splenectomized pigs by in-situ hybridization (ISH) with a nonradioactive digoxigenin-labelled DNA probe. An 839 base pair DNA probe targeting a 16S rRNA gene was generated by the polymerase chain reaction. Eight 6-week-old pigs were inoculated intraperitoneally with 6 ml of M. haemosuis-infected pig blood and eight negative control pigs were inoculated intraperitoneally with 6 ml of M. haemosuis-free blood. Two pigs from each group were killed for examination at 3, 7, 15 and 30 days post-inoculation (dpi). Red blood cells infected with M. haemosuis were first detected by light microscopy at 3 to 7 dpi. No M. haemosuis was observed in negative control pigs. Hybridization signals were evident in blood from the infected pigs at 3 dpi. The ISH method developed in this study was useful for the detection of M. haemosuis DNA in formalin-fixed, paraffin wax-embedded tissues and may be valuable for studying the pathogenesis of M. haemosuis infection.

45. A Structural Integrity Evaluation for the Interference-Fit Flywheel of Reactor Coolant Pump

Abstract: In this study, stress analyses and structural integrity evaluations for an interference-fit flywheel assembly of reactor coolant pump are conducted. Finite element stress solutions of the flywheel assembly at the standstill, normal operation speed, design overspeed and joint-release speeds, are obtained. For evaluations of structural integrity of the flywheel with surface cracks, considering ductile and non-ductile fracture, stress intensity factors of a series of surface or edge cracks postulated are also obtained by using the finite element alternating method. In the analyses, release of deformation-controlled stresses caused by structural interactions with centrifugal loads during rotation is considered. Results of stress and fracture evaluations are presented, including the primary and secondary stresses, applied stress intensity factors and the fatigue crack growth rates in the flywheel disc. For the interference-fit flywheel design and material conditions investigated, it is found that fatigue crack growth rates of smaller surface cracks in the flywheel are negligible. The material resistance to non-ductile fracture in terms of material KIC and RTNDT is the governing factor for the structural integrity of the flywheel with larger surface cracks.Copyright © 2004 by ASME

Abstract: The relationship between group and phase speed in an ocean waveguide is a robust descriptor of signal structure. Since different propagation paths or mode groups have characteristic group-phase speed relations (described by waveguide invariants), it turns out that this group-phase speed (g-p) structure is also useful for identifying the dominant fluctuating modal regions in, for example, shallow water internal wave fields. Since an acoustic time reversal mirror (TRM) works on a retransmission mechanism based on group speed structure (“last in, first out”), we will use TRM experimental results to illustrate the relation between acoustic fluctuations and g-p structure and to provide guidance for developing robust acoustic processing methods in fluctuating environments.

Abstract: The waveguide invariant concept provides a descriptor of the broadband interference pattern of the acoustic pressure spectrum in a waveguide. The acoustic pressure spectrum is proportional to the scalar product of the pressure and its complex conjugate. Signal processing often involves the correlation of acoustic field data with some sort of replica. This is a similar scalar product with a resulting interference pattern. However, in the conventional language of array processing this interference pattern is described in terms of a “mainlobe” and “sidelobes” or “ambiguities.” The waveguide invariant concept is as equally valid to describe these signal processing structures as it is to describe the interference structure of propagation in a waveguide.

Abstract: Summary: We report a case of cemento-ossifying fibroma that presented as a large extraosseous mass in the masticator and parapharyngeal space. CT scanning and MR imaging showed a large extraosseous mass with central conglomerated, well-matured ossified nodules and fatty marrow. The central matured ossified nodules were of low density on CT scans and high signal intensity on T1- and T2-weighted MR images. Multiplanar reformatted CT scans revealed the origin of the mass to be at the extraction site of the right lower second molar tooth.
