We demonstrated the rapid and nondestructive observation of structural defects in SiC wafers by full-wafer photoluminescence (PL) imaging under below-gap excitation. The use of visible light emitting diode arrays as an excitation source is essential to the simplification of an optical system and the light excitation covering the whole wafer. We were able to observe the defect-related intensity patterns similar to those obtained by conventional laser-scanning PL mapping. The measurement time of the PL imaging was more than fifty times faster than that of the PL mapping.

Based on the recent requirements, high strength, high damping stainless alloy HIDAS was developed. The chemical compositions are Fe-12%Cr-22%Mn and Fe-12%Cr-22%Mn-2%Co. The mechanism of high damping capacity would come from the hysteretic motion of Shockley partial dislocations which are lying at interphase interface of /. This alloy has also high strength. This is due to fine structure of /. Because of these properties, HIDAS can be applied to machinery industries.

We have demonstrated variable dispersion compensation by using a virtually imaged phased array (VIPA) to overcome the small dispersion tolerance in 40-Gb/s dense wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) transmission systems. By utilizing the periodical characteristics of VIPA compensators, we performed simultaneous dispersion compensation in a 1.28-Tb/s (40-Gb/s/spl times/32 ch; C band) short-haul transmission and confirmed that only two VIPA compensators and one fixed dispersion-compensating fiber are required for a large transmission range of 80 km. This performance can greatly reduce the cost, size, and number of compensator menus in a 40-Gb/s WDM short-haul transmission system. In addition, we achieved 3.5-Tb/s (43-Gb/s/spl times/88 ch; C and L bands) transmission over a 600-km nonzero dispersion-shifted fiber by using VIPA compensators. Although channel-by-channel dispersion compensation is required due to the larger residual dispersion slope in long-haul transmission, the periodical characteristics of the VIPA compensators offer the advantage of considerably reducing the number of different modules required to cover the whole C (or L) band. There are strong demands to expand captioned broadcasting for TV news programs in Japan. However, keyboard entry of captioned manuscripts for news programs cannot keep pace with the speed of speech because Japanese use ideographic characters. To realize simultaneous subtitling of Japanese news programs, a real-time speech recognition system to handle broadcast news transcription has been developed. Experiments showed that word recognition error rate of the system for studio announcer speech is 2.8% in the real-time recognition and the error rate can reduce to 0.8% by manual correction with an average total delay of 10.4 seconds.

Although not commonly seen in Japan, the incidence of leptospirosis reported in 2014 was the highest in the past 6 years. It is important to consider leptospirosis among patients who traveled to Okinawa, Japan, and to keep in mind Jarisch–Herxheimer reaction when administering antimicrobial agents to patients with leptospirosis. A 59-year-old Japanese man with a history of hypertension presented with a complaint of fever and watery diarrhea. He climbed mountains, got lost accidentally and drunk 2 l of fresh water in the swamp in Okinawa, Japan 2 weeks prior to admission. Physical examinations showed blood pressure 129/89 mmHg, heart rate 112/min, respiratory rate 30/min, temperature of 38.5°C and oxygen saturation of 97% on room air. Television that conveys real-time information has become an indispensable part of our lives. Its technology has advanced from the days of black-and-white sets to color models and to high-definition television (HDTV). HDTV has been contrived to provide the audience with greater immediate appeal such as sensation of reality and power than the current TV system does and its worldwide applications are expected to continue to grow. Real world information which we obtain with our eyes is three-dimensional. It is reasonable therefore, that we humans want an imaging system that produces pictures that are as natural and real as things we see and experience every day. Three-dimensional television (3DTV) is a very promising approach expected to satisfy such wishes. As television technology matures and HDTV produces pictures as clear as movies, 3DTV is now capable of providing real-time stereoscopic pictures with high resolution. This paper outlines the studies that have been carried out about 3DTV as a post-HDTV system. The themes of the paper are focused to such topics as human factors in relation to binocular parallax, camera and display systems, and bandwidth reduction technology. >

Trends in negative pressure over a few thousand cavitation events have been investigated for a Berthelot system comprising water/stainless steel/tube/sealing Ni plug in order to study the effects and extents of surface pre-treatments for the sealing metal, polishing, etching, and electroplating. The polishing and etching pre-treatments separated two kinds of cavitation nuclei on the metal surface; gases trapped within pores (crevices) (i) in the metal surface, and (ii) extending deep into the metal bulk. The latter, although much tougher, influenced negative pressure for a thousand cavitation events at most. The rise in negative pressure after a total of 1800 temperature cycles levelled off at around -115 bar (-11.5 MPa) irrespective of the surface finishes of the plugs. Electroplated plugs gave poor increasing trends owing to the co-deposited hydrogen. Impurity gases in the metal did limit the rise in negative pressure. These results, together with those reported before, have validated the authors extended gas-trapping crevice model, negative pressure is eventually limited by a supply of gas from sources in the metal bulk to surface crevices.

We performed 3.5-Tbit/s (43-Gbit/s /spl times/ 88 ch) 600 km transmission in the C- and L-bands by using virtually imaged phased array (VIPA) variable dispersion compensators. An adequate OSNR, which was the same for all the channels, was obtained by using distributed Raman amplification (DRA), a gain equalizer (GEQ), and a pre-emphasis technique. VIPA variable dispersion compensators can thus effectively overcome the small dispersion tolerance and temporal dispersion changes of dense WDM terabit systems. We achieved a Q-factor of more than 11.8 dB (BER < 10/sup -17/ with FEC) for all 88 channels.

In late 1997, Japan experienced a major public health incident in which many people were taken ill after watching an animation program on television. The cause was subsequently identified as photosensitivity or photosensitive epilepsy, and following detailed investigation of the phenomenon, broadcasters in Japan have jointly introduced guidelines in order to prevent a recurrence. This paper discusses the problem of photosensitivity and its causative factors, both in general and in relation to this particular incident. We focus on interactions between contemporary TV display technology and the human visual system which appear to have contributed significantly to the scale of this incident. We describe the content of the guidelines and an automatic video analyzer which has been developed and deployed by NHK in order to alert production staff to potential guideline violations in video material.

Objective: Televised images are the most common stimulus for provoking photosensitive seizures in photosensitive persons. To inhibit photosensitive seizures in photosensitive persons who do or do not have epilepsy, the authors sought nonpharmacologic methods for reducing the levels of photic stimulation of televised images. Background: The authors found two types of pathophysiologic mechanisms (wavelength-dependent and quantity of light–dependent mechanisms) for photoparoxysmal responses (PPR). Methods: The authors tested two different types of optical filters, one reflecting long-wavelength red light selectively, which stimulates a wavelength-dependent mechanism, and the other absorbing light in the visible spectrum evenly (neutral density filters). Inhibiting effects of optical filters were studied by conventional intermittent photic stimulation (IPS) using strobe light and novel photic stimulation using flashing cathode ray tubes (CRT). Results: Both filters individually inhibited PPR insufficiently (less than 50%). Compound optical filters, composed of both types of filters, can inhibit the PPR, approximately 90% for IPS and 95% for photic stimulation with CRT. These compound optical filters do not destroy chromaticity of emissions from the television’s CRT. Conclusions: These compound filters may be useful to prevent seizures induced by television in photosensitive persons.

Chromatic dispersion compensation using a virtually imaged phased array is described. This method has advantageous features: continuously variable dispersion over a /spl sim/4000 ps/nm range, simultaneous compensation of over 50 WDM channels with 100 GHz spacing, and potential for small packaging.

We studied the ultrastructure of the parathyroid gland of young golden hamsters after short-term treatment with ethanol (1.5 g/kg bw or 6.0 g/kg bw). We did not find any ultrastructural changes of the parathyroid gland after administration of 1.5 g/kg ethanol. In the hamsters, 3 hours after administration of 6.0 g/kg ethanol, the mean serum calcium concentration was significantly low as compared to that of the control animals. In the parathyroid gland 1 hour after administration of 6.0 g/kg ethanol, the Golgi complexes associated with a few prosecretory granules and the volume density occupied by the Golgi complexes decreased compared with that of the control animals. In the parathyroid glands 3 hours after administration of 6.0 g/kg ethanol, the Golgi complexes decreased as compared with those of the control animals, while the large vacuolar bodies increased. These findings suggest that the cellular activity of the parathyroid gland is suppressed after short-term treatment with ethanol. Intracellular lumen was found in the parathyroid chief cells 3 hours after administration of 6.0 g/kg ethanol, and the significance of this structure is discussed.

We studied the reproducibility of multifocal electroretinography by repeated measurements in normal subjects. We also analyzed the amplitude and implicit time of the waves. Nine healthy eyes including myopic cases (-4.1 D on average) of 9 normal males, aged 19 to 42 years, were the objects of study. We used a (Visual Evoked Response Imaging System III (VERIS III), by TOMEY Corp.) for multifocal electroretinography. Each eye was examined 4 times on different days. The stimulus elements consisted of 103 hexagons. The net recording time was 4 minutes. We used the coefficient of variation (standard deviation/average) of 4 measurements of response density as index of reproducibility. Poor fixation and blinking were important factors that affected the reproducibility. In all the 9 eyes, reproducibility of multifocal electroretinography, expressed as average of the coefficient of variation of all regions, was 22% on average. In 6 eyes with good fixation and without blinking, the reproducibility was 15% on average. In 6 eyes with good reproducibility, we analyzed three parameters of the focal response waves: all traces, quadrants and rings, as well as the amplitude and latency of the waves. These data served as controls. Our studies showed that the response density correlated closely with the amplitude and not with the latency in normal subjects.

The large vacuolar bodies in the parathyroid glands of pregnant golden hamsters after administration of CaCl2 or EDTA were investigated. In the parathyroid glands of the pregnant animals 15 min after administration of CaCl2, the mean serum calcium concentration was significantly high when compared to that of the control animals. In the parathyroid glands of the pregnant animals 15, 30 and 60 min after administration of EDTA, the mean serum calcium concentration was significantly low when compared to that of the control animals. In the parathyroid glands of the pregnant animals 15 min after administration of CaCl2, the percentage area occupied by large vacuolar bodies was significantly increased when compared to that of the control animals. In the parathyroid glands of the pregnant animals 15 min after administration of EDTA, the percentage area occupied by large vacuolar bodies was significantly decreased when compared to that of the control animals.

We performed angiography in photocoagulated eyes using four fluorescent dyes that have different molecular weight, lipid solubility, and electric charge. These findings were compared with those of sodium fluorescein (Naf) and indocyanine green (ICG). Angiograms were obtained with Naf, ICG and two fluorescein isothiocyanate dextrans at different molecular weight (FITC-D4: MW 4,400, FITC-D40: MW 38,900). We also used two other dyes: carboxyfluorescein (Caf: less lipid soluble) and calcein (Calc: a highly negatively charged molecule). Two and four days after laser photocoagulation of retina, dye leakage was still evident at the photocoagulated sites with Naf, Caf, Calc and FITC-D4. Angiograms taken after Caf and Calc injection showed more intense and rapid dye leakage than with Naf. Contrary to this, little dye leakage was observed with ICG and FITC-D40. These findings indicated that the critical molecular weight for permeation lay between 4,400 and 38,900 once the breakdown of blood retinal barrier occurred. In addition, difference in molecular weight is a major factor determining dye permeability at the photocoagulated retinal lesions, among other possibilities such as lipid solubility and electric charge.

The ultrastructure of the parathyroid glands in golden hamsters after administration of progesterone was investigated. In the parathyroid glands of the female hamsters after administration of progesterone, the mean serum calcium concentration was significantly higher when compared to that of the control hamsters. In the male experimental hamsters, the percentage area occupied by Golgi complexes and lipid droplets was significantly increased when compared to that of the control hamsters, respectively. In the female hamsters after administration of progesterone, the percentage area occupied by large vacuolar bodies was significantly decreased when compared to that of the control hamsters. In the male and female experimental hamsters, the mean number of secretory granules per 100 microns2 of cytoplasm showed a significant increase compared with that of the male and female control hamsters, respectively. These findings suggest that the secretory activity of the parathyroid glands may be stimulated in response to hypocalcemia induced by progesterone.

The effects of different ages on large vacuolar bodies in the parathyroid glands of golden hamsters after administration of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) were investigated. In the parathyroid glands of the young and senile animals 15 min and the senile animals 60 min after administration of PGE2, the mean serum calcium concentration was significantly higher when compared to that of the young and senile control animals, respectively. In the experimental adult animals 60 min after administration of PGE2, the serum calcium concentration was seen to increase. In the parathyroid glands of the young animals 15 min and the adult and senile animals 60 min after administration of PGE2, the percent area occupied by large vacuolar bodies was significantly increased when compared to that of the young, adult and senile control animals, respectively. These findings suggest that the percent area occupied by large vacuolar bodies is increased in response to hypercalcemia induced by PGE2. It is thought that in the parathyroid glands suppressed by hypercalcemia there is a relationship between the percent area occupied by large vacuolar bodies and aging.

Since Sandström reported the first detailed description of the parathyroid glands of human beings in 1880, and Lever first described the ultrastructure of the parathyroid chief cells of rat in 1957, a large number of light and electron microscopic studies have been done on the parathyroid glands of numerous animal species under normal and experimental conditions. This review deals with the comparative morphology of the parathyroid glands in amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals under normal conditions, and the problem concerning the effects of various experimental conditions on the parathyroid glands in mice, rabbits and hamsters. The parathyroid glands were recognized in all vertebrate animals higher than fish, and arose from the third and fourth branchial pouches. Several animals, such as the newt, lizard, gecko, mouse, rat, hamster and gerbil, had only two parathyroid glands, but most animals had four. In mammals, most of the parathyroid glands were closely associated with the thyroid gland, but in amphibians, reptiles and birds, the glands separated from the thyroid gland. In some mammals, the parenchymal cells of the parathyroid gland were classified under a light microscope into two main types of cells: chief cells and oxyphil cells. Examinations under an electron microscope also showed the chief cells having many cell organelles and the oxyphil cells filled with numerous mitochondria in the parathyroid glands of human beings, monkeys, cows, horses, bats and turtles. In addition, the chief cells in most animals were classified at the light microscopic level into light cells and dark cells, moreover the chief cells were also electron microscopically divided into a light and dark type showing different functional phases of a single cell type when osmium or glutaraldehyde fixative was used. However, it is widely accepted today that differences in cytoplasmic density of the chief cells are due to artifacts produced in the process of tissue preparation. The parenchymal cells of the parathyroid gland of the newt were divided into the basal cells (supporting cells) and the suprabasal cells (chief cells). In the parathyroid gland of the frog and toad, blood vessels and connective tissues were not present. In the parathyroid gland of the rabbit and hamster, the water-clear cell was observed. In the electron microscopic radioautograph of the parathyroid gland treated with 3H-leucine, most of the silver grains were seen over cisternae of the granular endoplasmic reticulum at 15 minutes, over the Golgi complexes at 30 minutes, and over secretory granules at 60 minutes.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

We examined the relationship between the incidence of ultrastructural changes in the alveolar septum and the extravascular lung water content. Pulmonary edema was induced in 18 mongrel dogs by either dextran (n = 12) or alloxan (n = 6) administration. Six other dogs served as controls. Extravascular lung water content was measured by the thermal-dye double indicator dilution method. Specimens of lung tissue were examined with an electron microscope, and the incidence of 13 types of pathological changes in the alveolar septum was studied. For each type of pathological change, the incidence was correlated with the magnitude of lung water content. The following results were obtained. The incidence of edematous changes in the alveolar interstitium (widening of the interstitial space, and dispersion and disarray of collagen fibres in the interstitial space) was well correlated with lung water content (r = 0.78, p0.01, and r = 0.84, p0.01, respectively). The correlation was not significant in the remaining types of changes. We conclude that the incidence of the pathological changes in the alveolar septum is increased along with the increase in the content of lung water in both dextran- and alloxan-induced experimental pulmonary edema in dogs.

We studied the ocular spectral characteristics of monkey and rabbit eyes in the range of 300 to 900 nm. Measurements were performed on dissected specimens of the cornea, lens, vitreous, sensory retina and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) plus choroid. Xanthophyll and monkey blood were also studied. Components of the ocular media showed high absorption over the ultraviolet range. The absorption curve of the sensory retina was similar to that of the ocular media. RPE plus choroid showed high absorption over the whole spectral range, with gradual decrease in absorption above 600 nm. The specific absorption curve of both xanthophyll and blood became manifest only when diluted to more than 1:20,000 in the former and to more than 1:100 in the latter. The spectral absorption of the ocular tissue thus became specific only when the thickness or density of the tissue was within a certain range.

Isolated parathyroid glands from adult female golden hamsters were incubated on a black Millipore filter in an incubation vessel containing Ham's F-12 medium, with or without melatonin at final concentration of 10(-5) M for 1 hour. In the parathyroid glands used for in vitro treatments with melatonin, the Golgi complexes associated with a few prosecretory granules and cisternae of the rough endoplasmic reticulum showed a significant decrease, and lipid droplets and lysosomes appeared to be increased compared with those of the control parathyroid glands. These changes are considered to be induced by suppression of the synthesis of parathyroid hormone in parathyroid glands incubated in a vessel containing medium with melatonin.

The authors quantitated the retinal blood flow volume during and immediately after experimental compression of the temporal retinal vein in 5 Macaca fuscata monkey eyes. The hydrogen clearance method was used to quantitate the retinal blood flow volume. After placing a microelectrode on the retinal surface, we measured the blood flow volume 4 times at a 15-minute interval. This value served as a baseline for the experiments. Next we compressed the temporal retinal vein near the disc with a 25-gauge needle with a rounded tip under guidance by an indirect ophthalmoscope. We measured the blood flow volume during compression. The compression was maintained for 3 minutes. Further blood flow determination was performed 7 minutes after release of compression and was repeated 4 times at a 15-minute interval. During compression of the temporal retinal vein, the retinal blood flow volume in the area served by the vein decreased by an average of 35%. The flow volume recovered rapidly and remained stable after release of compression. There was no reactive hyperemia. This model appears useful to elucidate the retinal circulation of branch retinal vein occlusion.

The authors quantitated the blood flow of the optic nervehead after intravenous administration of calcium antagonist. The hydrogen clearance method was used to measure the blood flow after placing an electrode sensor in the optic nervehead of 9 eyes of 5 Macaca fuscata monkeys, under general anesthesia by intravenous pentobarbital sodium. 5 micrograms/kg of nicardipine, a calcium antagonist, was rapidly injected into the femoral vein. Measurement of blood flow in the optic nervehead was started 5 minutes after injection until 90 minutes at intervals of 15 minutes. A dose of 2 micrograms/kg/min nicardipine was then administered intravenously for another 90 minutes. During the experiment, intraocular pressure was maintained at 15 mmHg under continuous monitoring of systemic blood pressure. The blood flow in the optic nervehead decreased to 83% 5 minutes after injection. It increased slowly and reached the initial value 50 minutes later. It reached 108% of the initial value 80 minutes after injection. During the additional infusion of nicardipine, the blood flow decreased slowly and reached 85% of the initial value. It is concluded that the blood flow in the optic nervehead changed depending on the method, quantity and duration after injection of intravenous calcium antagonist. The blood flow decreased immediately after administration. The main cause of this phenomenon was thought to be due to decrease of perfusion pressure secondary to decrease of systemic blood pressure.

During the dissecting practice of students at Gifu University School of Medicine in 1989, a rare developmental anomaly showing the sciatic artery was found in the left lower limb of a cadaver of 88-year-old Japanese female. The left sciatic artery (5 mm in diameter) arose from the internal iliac artery and appeared at the buttock between the piriformis and superior gemellus muscles through foramen infrapiriforme. The femoral artery (6 mm in diameter) of the left lower limb was normal in distribution and belonged to the type III by Adachi's classification (1928). The terminal vessel of the femoral artery was joined to the sciatic artery at the popliteal fossa.

The ultrastructure of the parathyroid glands of hypophysectomized golden hamsters was studied. In the parathyroid glands of hypophysectomized animals the Golgi complexes and secretory granules were significantly decreased and large vacuolar bodies were significantly increased compared with those of the control animals. In addition. the chief cells contained a few prosecretory granules in the Golgi areas and a few secretory granules were present in the peripheral cytoplasm. These results suggest that the synthesis and release of parathyroid hormone may be suppressed in the parathyroid glands of the hypophysectomized animals.

The present report describes a case of congenital bicuspid pulmonary valve which was observed in a male Japanese cadaver of 95 years old during dissecting practice at Gifu University in 1990. No evidence of heart failures was found. The semilunar valve on the left side was bigger than that of the right.

The ultrastructure of the parathyroid glands of calcium-treated golden hamsters subjected to 5 gravity environment was studied. In the calcium-treated animals exposed to hypergravity environment, the Golgi complexes and cisternae of the granular endoplasmic reticulum were significantly decreased compared with those of the animals exposed to hypergravity environment only and appeared to increase compared with those of the calcium-treated animals, but were almost similar to those of the control animals. In addition, many chief cells contained some prosecretory granules in the Golgi areas, some secretory granules situated close to the plasma membrane and many lysosomes. The morphology of the parathyroid glands in the calcium-treated animals exposed to hypergravity environment resembled that of the control animals. These results suggest that the parathyroid glands suppressed by treatment of calcium and stimulated in response to hypergravity environment may indicate the secretory activity of the parathyroid glands of the control animals.

The resolution limitation of integral photography (IP) is analyzed. Estimating the resolution of IP measured at the viewpoint, we derive the optimum width of the aperture or lens. It is shown that the resolution of aperture-plate IP is lower than conventional two-dimensional displays, even with an optimum design. When the ideal lens is utilized, however, lens-array IP can provide a three-dimensional display that is free from any discontinuous change of images that occur with the observer’s movement and with the same resolution that conventional two-dimensional displays feature.

Immunocytochemical localization of parathyroid hormone was examined in the rabbit parathyroid gland by means of protein A-gold technique. Protein A-gold particles were observed on the secretory granules and the large secretory granules thought to be storage granules. No protein A-gold particles were observed on cisternae of the endoplasmic reticulum and the Golgi apparatus.

The authors studied the mode of three main branches of the femoral artery (deep femoral, medial circumflex femoral and lateral circumflex femoral artery) in 179 Japanese cadavers during dissecting practice at Gifu University in the last four years. The findings were as follows; Two hundred and seventeen sides in the 352 sides (61.7%) belong to Type I of Adachi's classification on variations in the arrangement of the branches of the femoral artery. Forty-one sides (11.6%) belong to Type II, 55 sides (15.6%) to Type III, 7 sides (2.0%) to Type IV, 8 sides (2.3%) to Type V, 4 sides (1.1%) to Type VI, 5 sides (1.4%) to Type VII and 15 dises (4.3%) to other types. Five cases in 15 sides which belong to other types have been reported in our previous study (Emura et al. 1985). In 3 cases out of 10 sides the deep femoral-medial circumflex femoral trunk, and the ascending and descending branches of the lateral circumflex femoral artery arise from the femoral artery, respectively. In one case out of 10 sides the deep femoral-lateral circumflex femoral trunk and the medial circumflex femoral-inferior epigastric-obturator trunk arise from the femoral artery, respectively. In one case out of 10 sides the lateral circumflex femoral artery and the deep femoral-medial circumflex femoral-inferior epigastric-obturator trunk arise from the femoral artery, respectively. In one case out of 10 sides the medial circumflex femoral-deep circumflex iliac trunk arises from the lateral side of the femoral artery and runs medially behind the femoral artery, and the deep femoral-lateral circumflex femoral trunk arises from the femoral artery. In one case out of 10 sides the deep femoral-ascending (the lateral circumflex femoral artery) trunk, the medial circumflex femoral artery and the deep circumflex iliac-descending (the lateral circumflex femoral artery) trunk arise from the femoral artery, respectively. Aus den in Nitrobenzol bei 25°C gemessenen Leitfahigkeiten der Titelkomplexe ergibt sich, das der Grad der Ionenassoziation in der Reihenfolge der β-Diketonliganden Acetylaceton, 3-Brom-2,4-pentandion, 3-Nitro-2,4-pentandion zunimmt, wahrend die Reihenfolge der ionischen Beweglichkeit der Chelat-Kationen entgegengesetzt ist.
