This document contains lesson plans for a four-unit course in agriculture for sustainable development and is accompanied by a video tape and a booklet that discusses existing and future agricultural practices. Each unit of the document contains some or all of the following components: an introduction; objectives and competencies addressed; a list of equipment, supplies, references, and other resources; three or four learning activities; a question-and-answer game based on the format of the television game show "Jeopardy"; problem-solving techniques; illustrations of agricultural operations; material safety data sheet examples; and sample newspaper articles. The topics of the four units are as follows: (1) sustainable agriculture (investigation and analysis of agricultural practices as related to conservation tillage and best management practices); (2) innovative chemistry and conservation tillage (advantages and disadvantages of pesticide applications and the interrelationship of herbicide use with conservation tillage); (3) genetically improved plants (implications of genetically improved plants to our society and for agriculture on a global basis); and (4) Third World impact and global stability (the economic importance and interdependency of agriculture throughout the world). This resource is designed to assist rural adult literacy students. It deals with chemicals on the farm and aims to help students understand the technical language, concepts, and operations associated with spraying safely and effectively. The kit proceeds step-by-step from purchase to disposal. Material is divided into two sections. Section 1 covers understanding chemical labels and meanings of many technical and special words that deal with chemicals. Section 2 looks at measuring length, measuring perimeter, measuring area, measuring liquids, and meanings of metric terms. The kit contains a wide range of reading and writing activities, discussion topics, self-help exercises, tests and quizzes, vocabulary exercises, and case studies. (YLB)

This manual, developed for use by Peace Corps volunteers, attempts to help development counselors to understand the needs of remote-area groups and to provide for those needs through effective self-help projects. The projects covered are those that can solve most effectively, on the village level, the most pressing problems. The manual is written in as nontechnical language as possible and provides background information and step-by-step directions for many projects, illustrated with line drawings. Topics covered by the manual are agronomy, horticulture, entomology, animal husbandry, veterinary medicine, agriculture, home industries, self-help engineering (making tools and equipment), and measurements and conversations. In addition, a background information section is provided for the counselor, dealing with cultural anthropology, sociology, education, and the effects of climate on plant and animal growth. (KC)

This manual presents a simple, step-by-step description of irrigated rice production in Sierra Leone. It is geared specifically to the role and needs of Peace Corps volunteers who, since the mid-1970s, have worked as agricultural extension agents in the Sierra Leone Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. The manual is designed to serve both as a training manual, complementing the curriculum taught during preservice training, and as a field guide that contains a ready source of technical information during the growing season. The 18 chapters in the manual cover the stages of rice plant growth, seed selection and preparation, land preparation, fertilizer, insect pest prevention, diseases of rice, weed control, harvesting, threshing, drying, and storage. This manual, prepared for use by Peace Corps volunteers, provides background information and practical knowledge about crop production. The manual is designed to convey insights into basic crop production, principles, and practices. Primary emphasis is given to providing explanations and illustrations of soil, plant, and water relationships as they affect crop production. The content is presented in as nontechnical language as possible. Each of the seven units of the text are complete, substantially self-contained, and provide information, tables, and illustrations. The units cover the following topics: soils, plants, entomology, cereal crops, pulse crops, sugar and fiber crops, and oil crops. A glossary of terms used in agronomy completes the manual. (KC)

The focus of the manual is on surveying and interpreting local agricultural environment and individual farm units, developing agricultural extension techniques and practices, and providing basic hands-on and technical skills for extension workers in operations from farm land preparation through harvest. Covered in the individual chapters of the guide are the agricultural environment; reference crops; planning and preparation; soil fertility and management; pest and disease control; and harvesting, drying, and storage of crops. Appendixes to the manual include a list of common units of measurement and conversion; guidelines for conducting field trial result tests and demonstration plots, structural analysis, and soil samples; directions for using pesticides and herbicides; suggestions for troubleshooting common crop problems; lists of hunger signs in reference crops; and a discussion of planting skills for field extension workers. This individualized, self-paced course for training an entomology specialist was adapted from military curriculum materials for use in vocational and technical education. Completion of the course should provide students with basic information needed to accomplish the following duties of an entomology specialist: perform entomological work, apply toxic pesticides, perform control operations and preventive operations, operate and calibrate dispersal and safety equipment, maintain tools and equipment, and supervise entomology personnel. The document consists of a student workbook with objectives, assignments, review exercises and answers, volume review exercises, and a test. The workbook consists of six volumes. The first volume introduces pest management and safety, while the second contains information about pesticides and the environment and pesticide dispersal equipment. In the third volume, pests carried by domestic animals are discussed, while in the fourth household pests such as spiders and reptiles are examined. The final chapters provide information on the collection, identification, and control of economic pests (such as stored product pests, structural pests, and ornamental and turf pests) and vertebrate and vegetative pests (rodents, bats, birds, aquatic plants, grasses, and herbaceous broadleaf plants). The course in intended for use in a laboratory or on-the-job learning situation. (KC)

The proper use of agricultural pesticides is the major emphasis on the unit of instruction developed as a guide for use by teachers in planning and conducting young farmer and adult farmer classes. Seven lessons are included in the unit covering topical areas related to the utilization of pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, and the development of a comprehensive pest control program. Suggestions for teaching the lessons and suggested materials are presented. Teaching forms and a unit evaluation questionnaire are presented. (VA)

This guide contains basic information to meet specific standards for pesticide applicators. The text is concerned with the recognition of weeds and methods of their control in rights-of-way. Different types of application equipment both airborne and ground are discussed with precautions for the safe and effective use of herbicides. (CS)

This manual is intended to provide the information necessary to meet EPA standards for demonstration and research pest control and prepare for the written examination required for certification. Emphasis is placed on the principles of safe pesticide use. Chapters are included on pesticide applicator certification in Virginia, basics of pest management, EPA regulations, guidelines for minimizing pesticide pollution, agricultural spray adjuvants, variables affecting the efficacy of pesticides, soil application, basics of insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, rodenticides, avicides, and nematicides. This guide gives information needed to meet Environmental Protection Agency standards on industrial and institutional pest control, and to help prepare for certification. It gives descriptions and pictures of general insect pests, parasitic pests of man, occasional invaders, wood-destroying pests, stored product pests, vertebrates, and weeds. The guide also gives tips for using pesticides safely. (BB)

This manual is intended to assist pesticide applicators who are engaged in right-of-way pest control to meet the requirements of the Michigan Department of Agriculture for certification. While the majority of material in this guide pertains to vegetation management, the guide also addresses right-of-way insect and fungus control. An introduction with the explanation of right-of-way areas is presented. The seven sections included describe: (1) Right-of-way vegetation management; (2) Insect and fungus control; (3) Managing aquatic plants; (4) Sources of injury to non-target organisms; (5) Environmental considerations; (6) Sources of information and recommendations; and (7) Applicator responsibilities. Section one discusses types of plants, action of herbicides, types of herbicides, herbicide application techniques, application equipment, factors affecting chemical weed control, factors affecting foliage application, factors affecting soil applied herbicides, and weather factors affecting chemical weed control. This agricultural curriculum guide on horticulture for secondary students is one of six developed for inservice teachers at Marianas High School in Saipan. The guide provides the rationale, description, goals, and objectives of the program; the program of studies and performance objectives by levels; samples of lesson plans for effective delivery of instruction; and a listing of references. Concepts covered include orientation to horticulture, terminology, plant classification, horticulture mechanics, pest control, plant propagation, field preparation, and soils. Classroom activities are combined with gardening experiences. Appended materials include lesson plans, student activities, and tests. (CT)

This plan of instruction, lesson plans, and student study guides and workbooks for a secondary-postsecondary level course for an entomology specialist are one of a number of military-developed curriculum packages selected for adaptation to vocational instruction and curriculum development in a civilian setting. The course includes training on procedures for insect and rodent control, collection and identification of specimens, determination of control measures, identification and use of treatment solutions, and operation and maintenance of insecticide dispersal equipment. Three blocks of instruction cover 155 hours: (1) Entomology Fundamentals, Pesticides, and Equipment (11 lessons, 49 hours); (2) Control of Medically Important Pests (9 lessons, 58 hours); and (3) Control of Economically Important Pests (7 lessons, 48 hours). A Specialty Training Standard for student evaluation is provided. The plan of instruction details the units of instruction, objectives, duration of lessons, and support materials needed. A study guide and a workbook are provided for each block. These materials contain objectives, reading assignments, and review exercises. Military manuals, commercial texts, and audiovisuals are recommended, but not provided. This reference manual for training Peace Corps agricultural development workers deals with crops. The document begins with common units of area, length, weight, volume, and conversions between them. A practice problem is worked and other conversion problems are given. The second section is intended to show agricultural field workers how to survey and interpret the important features of a local agricultural environment and the individual farm units that are part of the environment. Section 3 is a guide to troubleshooting common crop problems. Section 4 offers guidelines for vegetable growing. Section 5 is an introduction to insects and insect control. Section 6 discusses nonchemical pest controls. Using chemical insecticides is the subject of section 7. Section 8 covers disease control. Section 9 discusses nematodes. Section 10 deals with weed control. An annotated bibliography suggests four vegetable-related references to be ordered for each trainee and references on vegetables and field crops to be placed in a training center library. Included among those library references are 7 on vegetables, 20 on insects, diseases, weeds, and nematodes; 3 on soil management and fertilizer use; 2 on irrigation; 13 on field crop production; 3 on root and tuber crops; 1 on tropical agriculture; and 2 on agriculture extension. This publication is designed to provide a core of instruction for the many different fields in agricultural/horticultural education. This course contains 21 instructional units that cover the following topics: introduction to horticulture; beginning a career in horticulture; hand and power tools; introduction to safety; growing facilities; greenhouse watering; plant growth and responses; introduction to floral design; introduction to deciduous plants; chemical safety; introduction to plant growth media; elementary study of soils; introduction to fertilizers; plant propagation; introduction to indoor plants; repotting greenhouse and indoor plants; introduction to evergreens; introduction to transplanting; introduction to pruning; introduction to fruits and vegetables; and introduction to garden flowers. Each instructional unit follows a standard format that includes some or all of these basic components: performance objectives, suggested activities for teachers and students, information sheets, supplements, transparency masters, activity sheets, assignment sheets, job sheets, practical tests, written tests, and answers to assignment sheets, activity sheets, and written tests.
