At the intersection of memory and feminist studies, this article examines the issue of suffrage and feminist monumental commemoration in the United States. Starting from the deficit of statues representing female historical figures in the public space, it analyzes the conception and reception of two important monuments honoring women's suffrage (Portrait Monument 1921 and the Women's Rights Pioneers Monument 2020). While those monuments have somewhat broken the "bronze ceiling", they testify to the mechanics of exclusion and inclusion at work both in the construction of history and memory. Then, the article takes on a broader perspective, questioning the extent to which traditional monuments, as products of a patriarchal culture and memory, can properly commemorate modern feminism. The essay identifies two trends, one consisting of transforming the bronze through various strategies, the other of "breaking the bronze" by replacing it with other materials and proposing new memory frameworks belonging to what James E. Young has labeled countermonuments. Still, the article ultimately questions the limits of the monument itself and points to the notion of interactive spaces as perhaps the most adequate sites of memory for the complex, multifaceted, contested, and contemporary movement that feminism(s) stand(s) for. In October 1975, the Icelandic women's movement organized a 'Women's Day Off' (WDO), a one-day strike designed to reveal the societal importance of women's work. In this article, we explore media coverage of the WDO in the Nordic countries. Through an analytical lens that focuses on media framing and journalistic practices, we analyse differences in the coverage's scope and content. We also contextualize the coverage against the background of sociopolitical factors that may have affected the cultural filtering of the news, as well as journalistic practices and resources in each country. In doing so, we demonstrate that the coverage relied on each newsroom's estimation of the event's newsworthiness for local readers. That news value was influenced by the country in question's cultural proximity to Iceland, the state of local feminist organizing and public discussions regarding gender equality, and other news topics in circulation at the time. Our analysis is based on a reading of media texts related to the WDO that we gathered using digital interfaces of the national libraries of Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Finland, complemented by a manual search in cases where such digitization was lacking. In this short paper, I contend that the history and philosophy of geography should be considered as an indispensable scholarly field to nourish both theoretical speculations about geography and ongoing scholars' political and social engagement towards critical, radical, decolonial, feminist and antiracist geographies. Following #MeToo, sexual violence and consent have become more important to Australian governments, policy makers, and organisations addressing gender-based violence. Locating consent in a specific social system of ‘labour’, this article takes social reproduction as an entry point to examine the experiences of refugee and migrant anti-violence advocates in Australia. I suggest that current discourses of consent, as bodily autonomy and judicial power, act as a site of social reproduction through the creation of norms that uphold patriarchy and whiteness. Considered in this way, marginalised groups such as refugee and migrant women are not afforded adequate space and resources to theorise consent based on their own lived experiences. After more than half a century since the beginning of a global movement for women’s rights, humanity still has a long way to go before achieving true gender equality. Currently, achieving equality of women and men is an important political and strategic goal at the global and European levels, as well as in the Republic of Croatia. This paper aims to provide a brief overview of the historical development of women’s rights in global and national contexts, to analyse the legislative and institutional framework of protection of women’s rights to equality and non-discrimination in the Republic of Croatia, and to present current data on the equality index of women and men in the Republic of Croatia based on international measurements. This article sheds new light on the history of French feminism during the crucial period between the 1960s and 1980s, and it does by so opening up the range of actors as well as the geography and chronology considered. More specifically, it reconsiders the battles for reproductive rights: the liberalisation of contraception in 1967 and of abortion in 1975. Focusing on the perspective of those sitting on the margins of reproductive citizenship and of the standard narratives of the feminist movement – immigrant women and their organisations in France, and civil society groups in the Overseas Departments (Départements d'Outre-Mer, DOMs) – as well as addressing the distinct reproductive regimes in the DOMs, allows for a reconsideration of French post-war pronatalism, and breaks away from what has long been the standard narrative of Western 'second-wave feminism', globalising and de-centring its history. The earliest example of the Ancient Greek word for a victor's prize, nikatērion, comes in a verse inscription from the sixth century bce on an Attic kylix (wine cup) from Taras. It records the victory of Melōsa in a competition with other young women. This article draws out the significance of her victory and redefines our understanding of who she was. Previous interpretations which define Melōsa by her relationship to men are rejected. Instead, it is argued that Melōsa's verse defines her place within a female world. Mary Niles Maack began her research in library history at a critical time in American feminist studies. Earlier scholars laid the groundwork for feminist research by identifying the contributions of women gathering sources about them and writing histories that corrected predominantly male perspectives on the role of women in American history. Maack addressed the problem of premature generalization in library history research in her 1982 article "Toward a History of Women in Librarianship: A Critical Analysis with Suggestions for Further Research." One focus of her scrutiny was Dee Garrison's work. When Maack's article was published the first women's studies programs were just being established in American universities; her research was an important contribution to a nascent field. This article analyzes the life of Amy Heminway Jones and her contributions to the development of international thought and the transnational networks that promoted internationalism and the international mind during the early twentieth century. Building on the work of Patricia Owens and Mary Niles Maack the article situates analysis of Jones's work and accomplishments within attempts to overcome the exclusion of historical women from the development of international thought and internationalism. The article places Jones's work at the nexus of a vast transnational network and movement to promote new perceptions about international affairs and the world through programs such as the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace's International Mind Alcoves and International Relations Clubs. The article demonstrates the extent to which Jones contributed to these efforts and the ways in which her position within the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace provided her with privileges and authority rare for a woman of her age and educational background. In 1969, Jael Mbogo was among the first women to campaign for a parliamentary seat since Kenya became independent in 1963. Her opponent was Mwai Kibaki, a young and promising politician, then minister of finance and who later became Kenya's third president. Though she had been the head of the most powerful women's organisation and regularly wrote opinion pieces in one of the biggest national newspapers, Jael was fairly unknown. And yet, her name made the headlines as she almost defeated Kibaki in an election tarred with irregularities. But her campaign has remained a mere footnote in a historiography that only focuses on winners and pays little attention to the women who vied for, but never rose to, positions of power. Building on Jael's articles and oral testimony, this article explores the genesis of her political commitment to women's social and political empowerment and reconstructs her campaign for the 1969 parliamentary elections. It argues for a shift away from a conceptualisation of politics and political history that solely focuses on (male) winners in favour of a history that makes space for resilient and wilful female leaders. The 1960s were a time of cultural and political change in Morocco which also saw the emergence of a new phenomenon in the Moroccan press: the emergence of magazines conceived by, for, and about women. Based on the idea that the study of these magazines is essential to understanding gender politics and to tracing the intellectual history of feminism in Morocco, this article addresses the development of Moroccan female press from its beginnings in the 1960s until the present time. Groupe Intervention Vidéo (GIV) is a Montreal-based distribution company "dedicated to the promotion of works made by women (in the most inclusive definition)." Founded in 1975, for almost five decades, GIV has supported a vast range of video works by and for women from Quebec and Canada, as well as from an international context. Over the years, GIV has promoted its catalogue to different communities through curated programs screened locally or at national and international festivals. More recently, this mandate has found a new venue and greater amplitude due to the use of two streaming platforms, Vimeo and VUCAVU. In this essay, I explain GIV's recent discourse on the use of streaming platforms as reflective of the organization's investment in video technology as a form of feminist intervention since the 1970s. This article provides a context for the publication of Chicana Lesbians: The Girls Our Mothers Warned Us About (1991). As Chicana literature and feminism flourished, the visibility of Chicanas increased dramatically, and at the same it became noticeable that Chicana lesbian representations lacked considerably. During this time roughly from the 1980s through 2000, the focus on Chicana lesbian representation reached a new level of awareness which ultimately led to an increase in demand for publications by and about Chicana lesbians. However, this new visibility did not materialize so easily and there were still resistances in the academy and at national conferences that led to major, well-documented confrontations. This was a dramatic and momentous period for the establishment of a public discourse about Chicana lesbians within Chicana/o studies that still continues today. Arguably, contributions by Chicana lesbians provided many foundational theories critical to the development of Chicana feminist thought and Chicana Studies that merits recognition. Published by Third Woman Press in 1991 and edited by Carla Trujillo, this book collection signaled a turn in perceptions of Chicana/o gays and lesbians across communities and in academic circles. This article argues that the publication of Chicana Lesbians: The Girls Our Mother Warned Us About was made possible by a confluence of social, cultural, and literary engagements with other publications that arose from a politics of love and desire. It suggests that Foucault's understanding of sexuality and power remains relevant today, particularly in analyzing contemporary institutional practices and the discourse of sexuality. The article also discusses the posthumous publication of Foucault's lectures, essays, and seminars, which reveal his broader engagement with antiquity and various topics such as public discourse, governmentality, and biopolitics. Foucault's approach to classical antiquity was influential not only because of his focus on it, but also because of the less commonly explored texts he studied within the discipline. This essay reads passages in the Narrative of Sojourner Truth, a Northern Slave (1850) that pertain to walking and Black motherhood. In doing so, it theorizes Truth's 1843 walking migration as a political pilgrimage whose spatial-temporal schema challenged federal and state policy. Armed with tactics borrowed from mathematics and the natural sciences, "sojourner laws" and other federal dictates worked to confine African American mothers like Truth to particular social and geographic places and to their status as enslaved and low-wage laborers. This article explores how Spanish women formed grassroots groups to fight for the transformation of their neighbourhoods in the late 1950s and 1960s — the latter years of Francisco Franco's dictatorship. In contrast to most histories of feminism, which focus on literate, secular groups in universities or the centres of cities, its subjects are activists based on the outskirts of Madrid and in the industrial areas of Asturias, many of whom were Catholic, came from rural areas and left school before the age of 14. Histories of feminism have tended to overlook completely movements in the southern European dictatorships, while accounts of modern Spain often see male politicians and experts as the driving forces shaping the built environment under Franco. But photographs, archival material and oral history interviews show that women demanded ' cosas básicas ' (basic resources) on a widespread scale in Asturias and Madrid. They made these claims in the context of unprecedented internal migration, industrial unrest and the spread of social Catholic movements: factors often neglected in studies of social movements. The women involved have sometimes struggled, however, to take pride in their actions in later life. Patterns in their life stories suggest why, and offer insight into what agitating under Franco has meant for how they understand their lives, identities and relationships. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
