The role of \(\beta\)-CoOOH crystallographic orientations in catalytic activity for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains elusive. We combine correlative electron backscatter diffraction/scanning electrochemical cell microscopy with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and atom probe tomography to establish the structure–activity relationships of various faceted \(\beta\)-CoOOH formed on a Co microelectrode under OER conditions. We reveal that \(\approx\)6 nm \(\beta\)-CoOOH(01\(\overline{1}\)0, grown on [\(\overline{1}\)2\(\overline{1}\)0]-oriented Co, exhibits higher OER activity than \(\approx\)3 nm \(\beta\)-CoOOH(10\(\overline{1}\)3) or \(\approx\)6 nm \(\beta\)-CoOOH(0006) formed on [02\(\overline{2}\)1]- and [0001]-oriented Co, respectively. This arises from higher amounts of incorporated hydroxyl ions and more easily reducible Co\(^{III}\)−O sites present in \(\beta\)-CoOOH(01\(\overline{1}\)0) than those in the latter two oxyhydroxide facets. Our correlative multimodal approach shows great promise in linking local activity with atomic-scale details of structure, thickness and composition of active species, which opens opportunities to design pre-catalysts with preferred defects that promote the formation of the most active OER species.

OA Förderung 2021 Two-dimensional semiconductors such as MoS2 are promising for future electrical devices. The interface to metals is a crucial and critical aspect for these devices because undesirably high resistances due to Fermi level pinning are present, resulting in unwanted energy losses. To date, experimental information on such junctions has been obtained mainly indirectly by evaluating transistor characteristics. The fact that the metal–semiconductor interface is typically embedded, further complicates the investigation of the underlying physical mechanisms at the interface. Here, we present a method to provide access to a realistic metal–semiconductor interface by large-area exfoliation of single-layer MoS2 on clean polycrystalline gold surfaces. This approach allows us to measure the relative charge neutrality level at the MoS2–gold interface and its spatial variation almost directly using Kelvin probe force microscopy even under ambient conditions. By bringing together hitherto unconnected findings about the MoS2–gold interface, we can explain the anomalous Raman signature of MoS2 in contact to metals [ACS Nano. 7, 2013, 11350] which has been the subject of intense recent discussions. In detail, we identify the unusual Raman mode as the A1g mode with a reduced Raman shift (397 cm–1) due to the weakening of the Mo–S bond. Combined with our X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data and the measured charge neutrality level, this is in good agreement with a previously predicted mechanism for Fermi level pinning at the MoS2–gold interface [Nano Lett.14, 2014, 1714]. As a consequence, the strength of the MoS2–gold contact can be determined from the intensity ratio between the reduced A1greduced mode and the unperturbed A1g mode.

The ferroelectricity of multivalent codoped Bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3; BFO) nanoparticles (NPs) is revealed and utilized for photocatalysis, exploiting their narrow electronic bandgap. The photocatalytic activity of ferroelectric photocatalysts BiFe0.95Mn0.05O3 (BFM) NPs and mono‐, di‐, or tri‐valent cations (Ag+, Ca2+, Dy3+; MDT) coincorporated BFM NPs are studied under ultrasonication and in acidic conditions. It is found that such doping enhances the photocatalytic activity of the ferroelectric NPs approximately three times. The correlation of the photocatalytic activity with structural, optical, and electrical properties of the doped NPs is established. The increase of spontaneous polarization by the mono‐ and tri‐valent doping is one of the major factors in enhancing the photocatalytic performance along with other factors such as stronger light absorption in the visible range, low recombination rate of charge carriers, and larger surface area of NPs. A‐site doping of BFO NPs by divalent elements suppresses the polarization, whereas trivalent (Dy3+) and monovalent (Ag+) cations provide an increase of polarization. The depolarization field in these single domain NPs acts as a driving force to mitigate recombination of the photoinduced charge carriers., The ferroelectricity of Ag/Ca/Dy‐doped BiFe0.95Mn0.05O3 nanoparticles are utilized for photocatalysis under ultrasonic conditions. The mitigated recombination of photoinduced charge‐carriers in the nanoparticles due to the depolarization field, is one of the important factors for the photocatalytic rate. The piezoresponse becomes a crucial parameter under ultrasonic conditions for ferroelectric photocatalysts. The pink dye (rhodamine B) is photodegraded using MDT doped nanoparticles. The ease of photoinduced charge carrier separation in single domain nanoparticles using the depolarization field as a driving force is shown. image

Mitigating high energy costs related to sustainable H₂ production via water electrolysis is important to make this process commercially viable. Possible approaches are the investigation of low-cost, highly active oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts and the exploration of alternative anode reactions, such as the electrocatalytic isopropanol oxidation reaction (iPOR) or the glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR), offering the possibility of simultaneously lowering the anodic overpotential and generating value-added products. A suitable class of catalysts are non-noble metal-based perovskites with the general formula ABO₃, featuring rare-earth metal cations at the A- and transition metals at the B-site. We synthesised a series of LaFe₁₋ₓCoₓO₃ materials with x=0–0.70 by automated co-precipitation at constant pH and subsequent calcination at 800 °C. X-ray diffraction studies revealed that the phase purity was preserved in samples with x≤0.3. The activity towards the OER, iPOR, and GOR was investigated by rotating disk electrode voltammetry, showing a relation between structure and metal composition with the activity trends observed for the three reactions. Additionally, GOR product analysis via high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was conducted after 24 and 48 h electrolysis in a circular flow-through cell setup, pointing out a trade-off between activity and selectivity.
