Abstract

The integration of liveness detection into biometric systems is crucial for countering spoofing attacks and enhancing security. This study investigates the efficacy of photoplethysmography (PPG) signals, which offer distinct advantages over traditional biometric techniques. PPG signals are non-invasive, inherently contain liveness information that is highly resistant to spoofing, and are cost-efficient, making them a superior alternative for biometric authentication. A comprehensive protocol was established to collect PPG signals from 40 subjects using a custom-built acquisition system. These signals were then transformed into two-dimensional representations through the Gram matrix conversion technique. To analyze and authenticate users, we employed an EfficientNetV2 B0 model integrated with a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network, achieving a remarkable 99% accuracy on the test set. Additionally, the model demonstrated outstanding precision, recall, and F1 scores. The refined model was further validated in real-time identification scenarios, underscoring its effectiveness and robustness for next-generation biometric recognition systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

7. Investigation of heat transfer in trocar system for minimal invasive surgery

Abstract

Laparoscopic surgery has transformed surgical procedures with its minimally invasive approach, involving small incisions and quicker patient recovery. Surgeons use different techniques to access deep tissues within the body. One common step in laparoscopic surgery is the insertion of a trocar system through one of these incisions. This allows for the introduction of instruments and the insufflation of the abdominal cavity with heated carbon dioxide to maintain a suitable operating environment. Here, we report a parametric study investigating the behaviour of different materials utilised in trocars in response to thermal exposure. The results obtained indicate that polycarbonate, acrylic, polyetherimide and polysulfone are favourable materials based on small CO2temperature difference between inlet and outlet of the trocar due to heat loss to surrounding medium. They have a high thermal resistance with reduced heat loss from the CO2flowing inside the trocar to the atmospheric air. The study provides insights for appropriate selection of materials for a trocar system.

Abstract

Parkinson's Disease and Adductor-type Spasmodic Dysphonia are two neurological disorders that greatly decrease the quality of life of millions of patients worldwide. Despite this great diffusion, the related diagnoses are often performed empirically, while it could be relevant to count on objective measurable biomarkers, among which researchers have been considering features related to voice impairment that can be useful indicators but that can sometimes lead to confusion. Therefore, here, our purpose was aimed at developing a robust Machine Learning approach for multi-class classification based on 6373 voice features extracted from a convenient voice dataset made of the sustained vowel/e/ and an ad hoc selected Italian sentence, performed by 111 healthy subjects, 51 Parkinson's disease patients, and 60 dysphonic patients. Correlation, Information Gain, Gain Ratio, and Genetic Algorithm-based methodologies were compared for feature selection, to build subsets analyzed by means of Naïve Bayes, Random Forest, and Multi-Layer Perceptron classifiers, trained with a 10-fold cross-validation. As a result, spectral, cepstral, prosodic, and voicing-related features were assessed as the most relevant, the Genetic Algorithm performed as the most effective feature selector, while the adopted classifiers performed similarly. In particular, a Genetic Algorithm + Naïve Bayes approach brought one of the highest accuracies in multi-class voice analysis, being 95.70% for a sustained vowel and 99.46% for a sentence. Abstract

In laparoscopic minimally invasive surgeries (MIS), high flow medical Carbon Dioxide (CO2) insufflator is employed to supply CO2 gas forming a gas-filled room inside the abdominal cavity with an evident outlook of intramural parts of the body. Three models of high flow medical CO2 insufflator are presented using MATLAB/SIMULINK-Simscape tool. Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) controllers are selected to separately control pressure, flow, and temperature variables of the first two models (PID-P and PID-PQT). Model Predictive Controller (MPC) is another type of controllers that is favored to control these variables simultaneously for the third model (MPC-PQT). Parameters, specified measurements, and compartments were tuned to achieve smooth running of the systems. Tuning of the controllers is considered to boost the simulation of the models and bring forth preferable results of pressure 0.073 bar (≈ 55 mmHg) in the peritoneal cavity for overweighed patients, in addition to maintaining a temperature of 37 °C as time continues. These outcomes with stability and more realistic curvatures are provided in reasonable short-time scales of few seconds, and of less than one second in the case of MPC-PQT model emphasizing the importance of high flow concept for insufflation purposes in the laparoscopic MIS domain. Abstract

Porous polymers are gaining increased interest in several areas due, in great part, to their large surface area and unique physiochemical properties. Porous polymers are conventionally manufactured using specific processes related to the chemical structure of each polymer. With the wide variety of porous polymers that have been designed, fabricated, and tested to date, this review aims to provide an overview of the advances and recent progress in the preparation processes and fabrication techniques. A detailed comparison between these techniques is also provided. Some of these techniques offer the advantage of controlling the porosity and the possibility to obtain porous 3D polymers. A new generic fabrication process that can be applied to all liquid polymers to texture their outer surfaces with a desired porosity is also presented. The proposed process, which is based on two micromolding steps, offers flexibility in terms of tailoring the texture of the final polymer by simply using porous silicon templates with different pore sizes and configurations. The anticipated process was successfully implemented to texture polyethyl hydrosiloxane (PMHS) using porous silicon and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) scaffolds.

Abstract

The appeal of parallel processing becomes very strong in applications which require ever higher performance and particularly in applications such as: data-warehousing, decision support, On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) and more generally DBMS. A linear speed-up is the main objective of parallel algorithms. However, in real applications, it's not obvious to reach this objective due to the high communication cost in parallel and distributed systems and to the possible skew in the charge of different processors. In addition, on heterogeneous multi-user architectures, the load of each processor may highly vary in a dynamic and unpredictable way. In this thesis, we are interested in treating the join and multi-join queries on distributed multi-user heteregeneous systems, grid systems and distributed file systems. We have proposed several algorithms based on using distributed histograms. These algorithms are based on a dynamic data distribution and task allocation which makes them insensitive to data skew and ensure perfect balancing properties during all stages of join computation even on heteregeneous multi-user environment. The complexity analysis of our algorithms and the experimental results show that they have a near-linear speedup., L'émergence des applications de bases de données dans les domaines tels que le data warehousing, le data mining et l'aide à la décision qui font généralement appel à de très grands volumes de données rend la parallélisation des algorithmes des jointures nécessaire pour avoir un temps de réponse acceptable. Une accélération linéaire est l'objectif principal des algorithmes parallèles, cependant dans les applications réelles, elle est difficilement atteignable : ceci est dû généralement d'une part aux coûts de communications inhérents aux systèmes multi-processeur et d'autre part au déséquilibre des charges des différents processeurs. En plus, dans un environnement hétérogène multi-utilisateur, la charge des différents processeurs peut varier de manière dynamique et imprévisible. Dans le cadre de cette thèse, nous nous intéressons au traitement de la jointure et de la multi-jointure sur les architectures distribuées hétérogènes, les grilles de calcul et les systèmes de fichiers distribués. Nous avons proposé une variété d'algorithmes, basés sur l'utilisation des histogrammes distribués, pour traiter de manière efficace le déséquilibre des données, tout en garantissant un équilibrage presque parfait de la charge des différents processeurs même dans un environnement hétérogène et multi-utilisateur. Ces algorithmes sont basés sur une approche dynamique de redistribution des données permettant de réduire les coûts de communication à un minimum tout en traitant de manière très efficace le problème de déséquilibre des valeurs de l'attribut de jointure. L'analyse de complexité de nos algorithmes et les résultats expérimentaux obtenus montrent que ces algorithmes possèdent une accélération presque linéaire.
