F., Kobeis, Europa is a premier target for advancing both planetary science and astrobiology, as well as for opening a new window into the burgeoning field of comparative oceanography. The potentially habitable subsurface ocean of Europa may harbor life, and the globally young and comparatively thin ice shell of Europa may contain biosignatures that are readily accessible to a surface lander. Europa's icy shell also offers the opportunity to study tectonics and geologic cycles across a range of mechanisms and compositions. Here we detail the goals and mission architecture of the Europa Lander mission concept, as developed from 2015 through 2020. The science was developed by the 2016 Europa Lander Science Definition Team (SDT), and the mission architecture was developed by the preproject engineering team, in close collaboration with the SDT. In 2017 and 2018, the mission concept passed its mission concept review and delta-mission concept review, respectively. Since that time, the preproject has been advancing the technologies, and developing the hardware and software, needed to retire risks associated with technology, science, cost, and schedule., K.P.H., C.B.P., E.M., and all authors affiliated with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory carried out this research at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, under a contract with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (grant No. 80NM0018D0004). Abstract

Sheepshead minnows, Cyprinodon variegatus Lacépède, exposed to 5.5 to 31 μg/l of the herbicide trifluralin, throughout their first 28 days of life, developed a heretofore undescribed vertebral dysplasia. This dysplasia consisted of semi-symmetrical hypertrophy of vertebrae (three to 20 times normal), characterized by foci of osteoblast and fibrobtasts actively laying down bone and bone precursors. Effects of the abnormal vertebral development were dorsal vertebral growth into the neural canal, ventral compression of renal ducts, and longitudinal fusion of vertebrae. Fish, exposed for 51 days to 16.6 μg/l trifluralin and thereafter depurated for 41 days, showed no increase in vertebral dysplasia during depuration; however, residual spinal column damage was evident. Serum calcium concentrations were elevated in adult fish exposed for 4 days to 16.6 μg/l trifluralin. Fluorosis or mimicry of hypervitaminosis A are considered possible mechanisms for the osseous effect, but are not considered to be the only possible causes. The highly predictable nature of this disorder in experimental exposures strengthens the probability that young fish may serve as experimental models for determining effects of chemicals on early vertebrate ontogeny, particularly in regard to skeletal development. 32. Gibberellic Acid‐controlled Sex Expression of Corn Tassels1

Abstract

Foliage of corn (Zea maysL.) was sprayed with gibberellic acid (GA3) in an attempt to regulate sex expression of corn tassels. Complete suppression of staminate development would facilitate hybrid seed production. Tassels of inbred lines ‘A619’ and ‘Gaspd Flint’ became pistillate, male sterile, or remained male fertile depending on the time of GA3application. Maximum pistil development within the tassel occurred when 5 mg/plant of GA3was applied 8 or 9 days prior to the start of microspore meiosis. Complete male sterility without pistil development was observed when applications were made 1 to 3 days before the onset of meiosis. Sex expression of the tassel was not altered when GA3treatments were made after the start of meiosis. Ear sex expression was not modified by any of the treatments. Stem weakness accompanied pistillate expression within the tassel and the stem either broke or was incapable of holding the plant in a verticle position. GA3treatments altered stem and peduncle elongation but did not change total plant height. The precise timing needed to obtain male sterility without stem weakness reduces the utility of GA3for hybridizing large populations. Plants in a normal field population do not reach this time frame at an uniform rate.

Abstract

Conclusions Our results suggest that chronic exposure to Aroclor 1254 increased susceptibility of test pinfish and spot to disease, and also appeared to be toxic to these fish. This PCB is rapidly stored by pinfish and spot, and persists in tissues for approximately three months. Our findings emphasize the need for further study on the effect of chronic exposure of aquatic organisms to polychlorinated biphenyls.

951,," A method is presented for developing water quality criteria (WQC) for type I narcotic chemicals in general and PAHs in particular.The criteria can be applied to any individual or mixture of narcoticchemicals using only the chemical's octanol-water partition coefficient KOW. It is derived from a database of LC50s comprising156 chemicals and 33 species, including fish, amphibians, arthropods, mollusks, polychaetes, coelenterates, and protozoans. A target lipid model is proposed that accounts for variations in toxicity due to differing species sensitivities and chemical differences. The model isbased on the idea that a target lipid is the site of action in the organism. Further. it is assumed that target lipid has the same lipid-octanol linear free energy relationship for all species. This impliesthat the slope of the log(LC50)-log(KOW) relationship is the same for all species. However, individual species may have varying target lipid body burdens that cause toxicity. The target lipid LC50 body burdens derived from concentration data in the water only are compared to measured total lipid LC50 body burdens for five species. They are essentially equal, indicating that the target lipid concentration is equal to the total extracted lipid concentration. The precise relationship between partitioning in target lipid and octanol is established. The species-specific body burdens are used to determine the WQC final acute value, i.e-, the 95-percentile level of protection.An acute-to-chronic ratio is used to compute the body burden corresponding to the WQC final chronic value, which is the procedure used toderive the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency water quality criteria. Abstract

The acute and chronic toxicity of fluoranthene was determined for a diverse group of freshwater and saltwater species under both standardlaboratory fluorescent light and ultraviolet (UV) light test conditions. Acute tests with 21 species demonstrated that fluoranthene was not lethal within its water solubility limit to most species tested under fluorescent light, but was lethal well below this limit to nearlyall of the species tested under UV light. In general, the acute sensitivity of freshwater and saltwater species from the same class was similar, although UV light exposure changed the relative sensitivity of some species. Crustaceans were the most sensitive to fluoranthene, but in the presence of UV light, an oligochaete and a fish were the most sensitive. Overall, UV light increased acute fluoranthene toxicity approximately one to three orders of magnitude. In chronic tests, sublethal concentrations of fluoranthene were toxic under both fluorescent and UV light, but as in most acute tests, UV light increased chronic toxicity approximately an order of magnitude. Comparison of datafrom tests conducted in the laboratory and outdoors demonstrated that acute toxicity increased with increased UV light intensity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
