Purpose: To examine the recent labor market indicators of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) versus non-STEM college graduates with disabilities. Method: The sample included bachelor of science (B.S.)/B.S.-level college graduates including 1,567,527 with a disability and 32,512,446 without a disability. Data were derived from the American Community Survey public use microdata files 2009-2011 inclusive. Three measures of labor market activity were used: labor force participation rate, unemployment ratio, and employment-to-population ratio. Results: Nonparametric tests of proportion with stringent alpha levels indicated that overall labor market participation was much lower for graduates with disabilities. Indicators improved somewhat for STEM graduates with disabilities perhaps because they persisted longer in their job search efforts. Within the sample of STEM graduates with disabilities, Whites experienced greater labor market participation than ethnic minorities. It was also found that supply-side interventions to improve STEM employment (i.e., government investment) have been markedly less effective than demand-side interventions (i.e., expanded recruitment of foreign STEM degree holders). Conclusion: Recent labor economics data and the expanded recruitment of foreign STEM degree holders bring into question whether or not a true STEM crisis exists today.

Professionals in the field of addictions view problems associated with recovery management across multiple domains. This exploratory study utilized concept mapping and pattern matching methodology to conceptualize the resulting 7 domains of concern for treatment and aftercare of problem and pathological gamblers. The information can be used by educators as they enhance their curriculum to address recovery management issues for this population and in furthering research. (Contains 2 figures and 2 tables.)

We explored the psychometric properties of the Hebrew version of the Fear of COVID-19 (FCV-19S) scale among health care workers in a large medical center in Israel. Participants (N = 705) completed the FCV-19S scale, as well as resilience, subjective well-being, and meaning in life using validated scales. Results showed a two-factor structural model accounting for 79.33% of the total variance. Both factors were negatively associated with resilience and satisfaction with life. Results suggest the FCV-19S has good psychometric properties among health care workers and may be used to assess the effects of the pandemic in this population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

After an overview of the teacher-certification and professional-development processes in Japan, the paper identifies several propositions that might explain why Japanese universities play a relatively small role in preservice and inservice opportunities and suggests three types of consequences that may result from the modest involvement of Japan's universities. Data available in the Integrated Mission System (IMS) maintained by the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) were analyzed with respect to the employment discrimination allegations and resolutions of persons with epilepsy (N=5,902). Purposes of the study included describing the allegations and resolutions of all workers with epilepsy as well as comparing the allegations and resolutions of youth with epilepsy with those of older workers. Youth in the database were in the age range of 18-25 (n=555), and older workers were in the age range of 26-75 (n=5347). Findings indicated that most of the perceived and actual discrimination issues occurred in post-hire rather than hiring situations. The proportion of allegations from females was greater among the younger than the older workers. Younger individuals with epilepsy were also more likely to file allegations regarding unlawful discharge and were more likely to receive a merit rating of their allegations from the EEOC. Outcome research in online counselor education is lacking as is the focus on online teaching andragogy. To address this gap, the Community of Inquiry framework and social presence are discussed within the context of online learning in a counselor education program. Data were collected in a counselor education program in the mid-Atlantic comparing online and on-campus learning outcomes and perceptions of social presence in the classroom. On-campus learners had significantly higher perceptions of social presence when compared with online learners, although perceived level of social presence was not correlated with learning outcomes. This article presents the results of a 30-month process improvement initiative examining the spiritual assessment documentation patterns of staff chaplains as well as CPE residents and interns at an academic medical center. Preliminary examination of chaplain documentation patterns led to a multidimensional intervention to address perceived documentation limitations and enhance reliability. The intervention resulted in positive changes in documentation patterns as assessed by an expert panel of experienced chaplains. Resilience refers to one’s ability to adapt and navigate through challenges in the face of a chronic illness and disability (CID). Originally reported in posttraumatic stress literature, resilience has been studied in various contexts; however, very few studies have been conducted from a virtue perspective. Virtue, in psychological terms, is consistent, everyday action toward a worthwhile pursuit, based on one’s values. From a virtue perspective, resilience is defined as a positive by-product of having endured adversities while transforming them into insightful opportunities for renewal. This article introduces the virtue-based psychosocial adaptation model (V-PAM) and its applicability to the study of resilience. Several systemic barriers exist to the successful recruitment and retention of students for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education programs and careers when students are both members of an underrepresented minority group and an individual with a disability. The authors have designed intervention programs in higher education settings and in this article they identify and discuss well-entrenched impediment that are programmatic, economic, psychological, architectural, and attitudinal in nature. Unless and until these obstacles are addressed (particularly in early adolescence), marginal gains in recruitment and retention is the most that may be expected for STEM education among underrepresented minority students with disabilities. This article documents the employment discrimination experienced by Americans with a record of disability but no current disability, utilizing the Integrated Mission System of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). Decisions by the EEOC in favor of charging parties with historical disabilities disproportionately exceeded those in favor of charging parties with current disabilities. This finding suggests that discrimination against persons who have only a record of disability persists in the workplace, and that this additional aspect of the definition of the term 'disability' is viable. Data available in the Integrated Mission System (IMS) maintained by the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) were analyzed with respect to comparisons in the employment discrimination experiences of youth with epilepsy (N = 555) and youth in a general disability comparison group (i.e., GENDIS; N = 12,663). Both groups of youth were employed in industries associated with entry level positions such as retail trades, manufacturing, health care and social assistance, and accommodation and food services, and the majority of allegations for both groups pertained to post-hire issues, e.g., unlawful discharge and failure to provide reasonable accommodations. Youth with epilepsy were more likely to file allegations regarding unlawful discharge and were more likely to receive a merit rating of their allegations from the EEOC. Findings suggest a connection between poverty and likelihood of a diagnosis of epilepsy, the need to target certain industries for disability awareness training, the relationship between a seizure at work and termination for disability rather than cause, and the importance of worksite interventions addressing identification of barriers to productivity and accommodation planning. This study is an exploration of job satisfaction and intention to quit among certified rehabilitation counselors working in various employment settings in 16 states that comprise the United States Census Bureau's Southern region. With a study sample of over 3600 individuals and a response rate of 50%, the study results make a compelling statement that the profession of rehabilitation counseling is experiencing positive gains in its workforce, as most counselors employed find their work meaningful and typically have no intentions to quit in the near future. However, there remain ongoing challenges related to recruitment of adequate rehabilitation counseling personnel and retention at levels high enough to meet system demands. More work is needed to expand opportunities for promotion of rehabilitation counseling personnel and to obtain more competitive salaries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The exploration of job satisfaction among rehabilitation counselors is not a new undertaking, but few studies have evaluated this construct across a full array of professional employment contexts. This investigation explores employment settings of rehabilitation counselors and their relationship to both job satisfaction and intentions to quit. The results revealed that employment setting does influence job satisfaction and retention for certified rehabilitation counselors. Overall, employees of the vocational rehabilitation system (the majority within this setting consisted of State vocational rehabilitation personnel n=662, followed by Veteran's Administration, Community Rehabilitation Programs, One Stop Centers and Independent Living Centers, n=88) reported the lowest amount of job satisfaction and a substantial degree of intention to quit. Few rigorous research studies exist to define the impact problem gambling may have on the workforce and the workplace. This study is an initial attempt to address this void by exploring the vocational patterns and demographics of callers with self report gambling problems to a state helpline. It utilizes Chi-squared Automatic Interaction (CHAID) Technique analysis to assess 1072 working age callers with gambling related problems. The goal of this exploratory investigation is to determine if the issue of problem gambling in the workplace warrants further research and, potentially, design of interventions. The purpose of this article is to describe two constructs recently highlighted in the counseling psychology literature – working alliance and counseling expectancies – and to describe first steps toward their application in vocational rehabilitation. As consumer and counselor embark on the vocational rehabilitation experience, differences in expectations may lead to a strained relationship and subsequent poor outcomes. In recognition of this challenge, the authors undertook a research project to give meaning and impetus to the concept of consumer empowerment in a manner that would maximize VR outcomes. This article documents the Progression of Disability Benefits (PODB) for a sample of 201 employees with multiple sclerosis (MS) vs. a large sample of employees with diverse disabilities (n = 77,096) and another neurology group employee sample with epilepsy (n = 59). Among the most interesting findings is the dramatic movement for the MS sample to Social Security Disability Income (SSDI) – 35.3% for the MS sample vs. 3.8% for the general disability sample and 8.5% forthe epilepsy sample. PURPOSE: To present the methods and summary findings of a nationwide survey on the current life experiences of Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF/OIF) Veterans with limb loss. METHODS: A questionnaire was sent to Veterans with items covering sample demographics, summaries of health status, prosthesis usage and fit, employment experience, and use and satisfactions with support services and providers. RESULTS: 158 Veterans completed the survey. Approximately 40% perceived their overall status, function and problems related to the prosthesis as "Average". 58% wore a prosthesis over 10 hours per day and 74% did not use additional walking aids. Approximately 75% had at least "Moderate" pain and residual limb health problems. 37% were employed though conditions often changed. Over 80% used healthcare, mental health counseling and education services. The Departments of Defense and VA were primary service providers. CONCLUSIONS: Respondents generally exhibited satisfactory life experiences. Results suggest a positive current status despite challenges that could impair health, functioning and quality of life.
