As the climate continues to warm, a range of feedbacks are expected by the response of vegetation. One of these is the BVOC-aerosol-cloud feedback, initiated by vegetation emitting more biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) with higher temperature. Once in the atmosphere, these BVOCs are oxidised and can then produce large amounts of biogenic secondary organic aerosols (BSOA) which again cool the surface both directly and through cloud-aerosol interactions (BSOA-aerosol feedback). The strength of this feedback, however, is poorly constrained, with some models suggest it holds significant importance, whereas others suggesting it to be completely negligible.Here, we use two unique long term observational datasets representing the boreal and tropical forests respectively, together with satellite data, to evaluate the BVOC-aerosol-cloud feedback in four ESMs through its chain of processes, using natural variability as a proxy for perturbed states of the climate in both models and observations. We show that the highest modelled feedback in the boreal zone is very likely an overestimate, but also that all the models seem to underestimate the feedback in the tropics. Taking full advantage of the growing number of long-term observational datasets for process evaluation in ESMs shows great promise for pin-pointing areas for model improvement, understanding and constraining variability modelled feedbacks and forcing., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

Tiivistelmä. Pro gradu -tutkielmassani tarkastelen maakuntalehtien esimiesten kielenhuoltodiskursseja eli tapaa, jolla he puhuvat kielenhuollosta. Lisäksi tutkin heidän kielikäsityksiään. Tutkielmani aineisto koostuu Suomessa ilmestyvien maakuntalehtien esimiesten nauhoitetuista ja litteroiduista haastatteluista. Haastatteluja on yhteensä kahdeksan, ja ne on tehty loka-marraskuussa 2019 puhelinhaastatteluina. Tutkimuksessani tavoitteenani on ollut selvittää, millaisia kielenhuoltodiskursseja informantit haastattelutilanteessa aktivoivat. Lisäksi tutkin, millaisia yleiskieleen ja kielenhuoltoon liittyviä kielikäsityksiä kyseisistä kielenhuoltodiskursseista voidaan havaita. Teoreettisena viitekehyksenä tutkimukselleni toimivat sosiolingvistiikka ja kansanlingvistiikka. Metodinani puolestaan toimi kriittinen diskurssianalyysi. Eristin aineistostani seitsemän kielenhuoltodiskurssia: vuorovaikutusdiskurssin, ammattidiskurssin, laatudiskurssin, perinnediskurssin, tunnediskurssin, muutosdiskurssin ja työkaludiskurssin. Vuorovaikutusdiskurssi, ammattidiskurssi ja laatudiskurssi korostavat toimittajien journalistista tehtävää, esimerkkinä toimimista, vastuuta sekä uskottavuutta. Tunnediskurssi kertoo kielen herättämistä tunteista: tällöin informantit kommentoivat pääasiassa vain omaa suhtautumistaan kieleen. Esimerkiksi liialliseen kielivirheisiin puuttumiseen saatetaan suhtautua affektiivisen kielteisesti. Työkaludiskurssi aktivoituu aineistossa silloin, kun kieltä kuvataan ensisijaisesti välineeksi tehdä toimittajan työtä. Tällöin kielenhuolto suhteutetaan muihin toimitustyön osa-alueisiin. Perinnediskurssi ja muutosdiskurssi käsittelevät kieleen kohdistuvaa muutosta vastakkaisista näkökulmista. Perinnediskurssissa esille nousee se, että kielen tulee pysyä tietynlaisena. Siihen sisältyy kielen vaalimisen ajatus sekä se, että kielen muuttuminen tarkoittaa sen huonontumista tai rappioitumista. Muutosdiskurssi taas sisältää kielikäsityksen, jonka mukaan kieli muuttuu väistämättä jollain tavalla. Olennaista on, ettei siihen sisälly kielen huonontumisen ajatusta, vaikka muutokseen saatetaankin suhtautua kielteisesti. Tutkielmani perusteella informanttien mielestä kielenhuollolla on tärkeä paikka journalistisessa ammatissa ja jokapäiväisessä työssä maakuntalehdissä. Tietyt, kontekstiltaan historialliset kielenhuoltodiskurssit ovat sitkeitä, vaikka lingvistisestä näkökulmasta katsottuna niihin sisältyy mustavalkoista ajattelua kielestä. Näin on esimerkiksi vaalimisdiskurssin tapauksessa. Mukana on kuitenkin myös käsityksiä, jotka sopivat esimerkiksi kielenhuollon nykyiseen kielen demokratiaa korostavaan määritelmään. Tutkielmassani saadaan kansanlingvististä tietoa kielenhuoltodiskursseista ja samalla kielikäsityksistä. Kielikäsitykset vaikuttavat siihen, millä tavalla kielenhuoltoa tehdään ja miten kieleen suhtaudutaan. Sitä on mahdollista hyödyntää esimerkiksi toimittajakoulutuksessa.

Atmospheric new-particle formation (NPF) affects climate by contributing to a large fraction of the cloud condensation nuclei (CCN). Highly oxygenated organic molecules (HOMs) drive the early particle growth and therefore substantially influence the survival of newly formed particles to CCN. Nitrogen oxide (NOₓ) is known to suppress the NPF driven by HOMs, but the underlying mechanism remains largely unclear. Here, we examine the response of particle growth to the changes of HOM formation caused by NOₓ. We show that NOₓ suppresses particle growth in general, but the suppression is rather nonuniform and size dependent, which can be quantitatively explained by the shifted HOM volatility after adding NOₓ. By illustrating how NOₓ affects the early growth of new particles, a critical step of CCN formation, our results help provide a refined assessment of the potential climatic effects caused by the diverse changes of NOₓ level in forest regions around the globe.

The climate impact of deforestation depends on the relative strength of several biogeochemical and biogeophysical effects. In addition to affecting the exchange of carbon dioxide (CO2) and moisture with the atmosphere and surface albedo, vegetation emits biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) that alter the formation of short-lived climate forcers (SLCFs), which include aerosol, ozone and methane. Here we show that a scenario of complete global deforestation results in a net positive radiative forcing (RF; 0.12Wm-2) from SLCFs, with the negative RF from decreases in ozone and methane concentrations partially offsetting the positive aerosol RF. Combining RFs due to CO2, surface albedo and SLCFs suggests that global deforestation could cause 0.8 K warming after 100 years, with SLCFs contributing 8% of the effect. However, deforestation as projected by the RCP8.5 scenario leads to zero net RF from SLCF, primarily due to nonlinearities in the aerosol indirect effect.

The formation of secondary particles in the atmosphere accounts for more than half of global cloud condensation nuclei. Experiments at the CERN CLOUD (Cosmics Leaving OUtdoor Droplets) chamber have underlined the importance of ions for new particle formation, but quantifying their effect in the atmosphere remains challenging. By using a novel instrument setup consisting of two nanoparticle counters, one of them equipped with an ion filter, we were able to further investigate the ion-related mechanisms of new particle formation. In autumn 2015, we carried out experiments at CLOUD on four systems of different chemical compositions involving monoterpenes, sulfuric acid, nitrogen oxides, and ammonia. We measured the influence of ions on the nucleation rates under precisely controlled and atmospherically relevant conditions. Our results indicate that ions enhance the nucleation process when the charge is necessary to stabilize newly formed clusters, i.e., in conditions in which neutral clusters are unstable. For charged clusters that were formed by ion-induced nucleation, we were able to measure, for the first time, their progressive neutralization due to recombination with oppositely charged ions. A large fraction of the clusters carried a charge at 1.5 nm diameter. However, depending on particle growth rates and ion concentrations, charged clusters were largely neutralized by ion–ion recombination before they grew to 2.5 nm. At this size, more than 90 % of particles were neutral. In other words, particles may originate from ion-induced nucleation, although they are neutral upon detection at diameters larger than 2.5 nm. Observations at Hyytiälä, Finland, showed lower ion concentrations and a lower contribution of ion-induced nucleation than measured at CLOUD under similar conditions. Tutkin kandidaatintutkielmassani luovaa kirjoittamista harrastavien kielenhuoltoasenteita. Tutkimukseni on osa kansanlingvististä asennetutkimusta. Kansanlingvistinen asennetutkimus tutkii kieltä koskevia avoimia kommentteja ja reaktioita suorilla asennetutkimusmenetelmillä esimerkiksi lomakekyselyjen muodossa. Olen kerännyt aineistoni sähköisellä kyselylomakkeella Finfanfun-kirjoitusfoorumin käyttäjiltä. Aineistoni koostuu 36 lomakkeesta. Kaksiosaisen kyselyn ensimmäisen osan pohjalta tutkin, miten luovaa kirjoittamista harrastajat määrittelevät kielenhuollon, ja kuinka tärkeänä he pitävät kielenhuoltoa luovassa kirjoittamisessa. Analysoin, millaisia metakielisiä ilmauksia vastaajat liittävät kielenhuoltoon siitä puhuessaan. Kyselyn toisessa osassa olen käyttänyt Osgoodin semanttista differentiaalia selvittääkseni vastaajien kielenhuoltoasenteita. Tutkimukseni perusteella luovaa kirjoittamista harrastajat näkevät kielenhuollon merkityksellisenä luovassa kirjoittamisessa, ja asennoituminen on sitä kautta myönteinen. Kielenhuollon merkityksellisyys liitetään ennen kaikkea viestinnällisyyteen ja siihen, että kielen huoltaminen tekee lukukokemuksesta lukijalle paremman. Asennoituminen onkin kaikkein selkeintä juuri viestinnällisyyden ja sitä kautta lukukokemuksen kohdalla korostaen kielenhuollon käyttöarvoa. Kielenhuollon avulla tekstistä on mahdollista saada esimerkiksi selkeämpää ja ymmärrettävämpää, ja sen vuoksi kielenhuolto on myös luovassa kirjoittamisessa merkittävä asia. Toisaalta kielenhuolto on luoville kirjoittajille muutakin kuin apuväline, ja siihen asennoidutaan myös siltä kannalta, mitä se kirjoittajalle itselleen antaa. Kielenhuolto nähdään tältä osin osana esimerkiksi omaa identiteettiä ja siihen liitetään myönteisiä tunteita.

Highly oxygenated organic molecules (HOMs) are formed from the oxidation of biogenic and anthropogenic gases and affect Earth���s climate and air quality by their key role in particle formation and growth. While the formation of these molecules in the gas phase has been extensively studied, the complexity of organic aerosol (OA) and lack of suitable measurement techniques have hindered the investigation of their fate post-condensation, although further reactions have been proposed. We report here novel real-time measurements of these species in the particle phase, achieved using our recently developed extractive electrospray ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer (EESI-TOF). Our results reveal that condensed-phase reactions rapidly alter OA composition and the contribution of HOMs to the particle mass. In consequence, the atmospheric fate of HOMs cannot be described solely in terms of volatility, but particle-phase reactions must be considered to describe HOM effects on the overall particle life cycle and global carbon budget.
