We study the sensitivity of South Asian Summer Monsoon (SASM) precipitation to Southern Hemisphere (SH) subtropical Absorbed Solar Radiation (ASR) changes using Community Earth System Model 2 simulations. Reducing positive ASR biases over the SH subtropics impacts SASM, and is sensitive to the ocean basin where changes are imposed. Radiation changes over the SH subtropical Indian Ocean (IO) shifts rainfall over the equatorial IO northward causing 1–2 mm/day drying south of equator, changes over the SH subtropical Pacific increases precipitation over northern continental regions by 1–2 mm/day, and changes over the SH subtropical Atlantic have little effect on SASM precipitation. Radiation changes over the subtropical Pacific impacts the SASM through zonal circulation changes, while changes over the IO modify meridional circulation to bring about changes in precipitation over northern IO. Our findings suggest that reducing SH subtropical radiation biases in climate models may also reduce SASM precipitation biases. As the global climate continues to evolve, it is essential to have a clear understanding of the possible future changes to the SASM. However, current state‐of‐the‐art climate models have difficulties in simulating climatological mean SASM precipitations. Here we study sensitivity of SASM precipitation to subtropical southern ocean radiation as one of the possible causes of SASM precipitation bias. Our experiments indicate that SASM precipitation is sensitive to southern hemisphere (SH) subtropical radiation changes particularly to those in subtropical Pacific. These findings imply that improving SH subtropical radiation biases might improve SASM precipitation simulations in climate models. It has been proposed that increasing greenhouse gas (GHG) driven climate tipping point risks may prompt consideration of solar radiation modification (SRM) climate intervention to reduce those risks. Here, we study marine cloud brightening (MCB) SRM interventions in three subtropical oceanic regions using Community Earth System Model 2 experiments. We assess the MCB impact on tipping element‐related metrics to estimate the extent to which such interventions might reduce tipping element risks. Both the pattern and magnitude of the MCB cooling depend strongly on location of the MCB intervention. We find the MCB cooling effect reduces most tipping element impacts; though differences in MCB versus GHG climate response patterns mean MCB is an imperfect remedy. However, MCB applied in certain regions may exacerbate certain GHG tipping element impacts. Thus, it is crucial to carefully consider the pattern of MCB interventions and their teleconnected responses to avoid unintended climate effects. Plain Language Summary: Marine cloud brightening (MCB) is a proposal to spray sea salt particles into clouds over oceans to increase the reflection of sunlight by the clouds, thus cooling the surface. If greenhouse gas warming continues, technologies like MCB might be considered to avoid climate change impacts such as climate system tipping points. Here, we use state‐of‐the‐art climate model experiments to analyze the MCB impact on elements of the climate system that may have tipping points. In this model, MCB reduces risks for most tipping elements considered here, such as by reducing coral reef heat stress and increasing Atlantic overturning circulation. However, the impact of MCB depends on where it is applied and in some cases adds to GHG impacts, meaning the location of MCB deployments must be carefully considered to avoid unintended regional climate effects. This study investigates the influence of climate change on widespread fog conditions over the Indo-Gangetic Plains (IGP) of north India using observations, reanalysis data of atmospheric parameters, coupled model inter-comparison project 6 (CMIP6) projections following four future scenarios based on the shared socio-economic pathways (SSP126, SSP245, SSP370, SSP585), and advanced analysis techniques including machine learning. Two parameters fog fraction and widespread fog days (WFDs) are estimated in this study by functional mapping of fog observations with 8 atmospheric parameters for the period 1981–2018 using three empirical/machine learning approaches. Of these, we note that the deep learning convolutional neural network (CNN) exhibits superiority in performance by showing the mapping closer to the observed, and also offers promising potential for operational purposes to provide fog outlooks for the IGP region. Temporal evolution of fog fractions and WFDs is analyzed from the CMIP6 projections following the aforementioned four future scenarios using CNN for the future periods of the twenty-first century. It is noted that there is a substantial enhancement in the CMIP6 projected fog fractions as high as 57% during the period (2015–2045) relative to the historical (1981–2014) period, while the largest increase of 154% is seen in projected WFDs. It is also seen that the near-future period (2015–2045) witnesses a larger prevalence of WFDs, for all scenarios except SSP126, due to the combined effects of air pollution and greenhouse warming. The post-2046 periods, however, generally indicate signatures of decline in foggy days with widespread conditions relative to historical period in most of the scenarios except SSP370. The severity in fog conditions following the high-emission scenarios SSP370 and SSP585 during this period comes from the relative impact of mitigation strategies of pollutants. Quantification and mapping of surficial seabed sediment organic carbon have wide-scale relevance for marine ecology, geology and environmental resource management, with carbon densities and accumulation rates being a major indicator of geological history, ecological function and ecosystem service provisioning, including the potential to contribute to nature-based climate change mitigation. While global analyses can appear to provide a definitive understanding of the spatial distribution of sediment carbon, regional maps may be constructed at finer resolutions and can utilise targeted data syntheses and refined spatial data products and therefore have the potential to improve these estimates. Here, we report a national systematic review of data on organic carbon content in seabed sediments across Canada and combine this with a synthesis and unification of the best available data on sediment composition, seafloor morphology, hydrology, chemistry and geographic settings within a machine learning mapping framework. Predictive quantitative maps of mud content, dry bulk density, organic carbon content and organic carbon density were produced along with cell-specific estimates of their uncertainty at 200 m resolution across 4 489 235 km 2 of the Canadian continental margin (92.6 % of the seafloor area above 2500 m) (10.5683/SP3/ICHVVA, Epstein et al., 2024). Fine-scale variation in carbon stocks was identified across the Canadian continental margin, particularly in the Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean regions. Overall, we estimate the standing stock of organic carbon in the top 30 cm of surficial seabed sediments across the Canadian shelf and slope to be 10.9 Gt (7.0–16.0 Gt). Increased empirical sediment data collection and higher precision in spatial environmental data layers could significantly reduce uncertainty and increase accuracy in these products over time. Boreal wintertime planetary-scale atmospheric circulations and their possible consequences to widespread fog occurrences over the Indo-Gangetic Plains (IGP) region of the Himalayan valley are investigated in this study. Among the different fog types, radiation fog type seen at night or early morning hours favored by large-scale subsidence aloft and strong near-surface inversion is focused in this study. A composite analysis reveals that upper air circulation associated with 105 fog days over the IGP region show a trail linked to circulation anomalies over the Eurasian continents and the Arctic Circle. The findings suggest that there is a footprint of the Arctic Oscillation (AO) and conventional Eurasian (EU) circulation patterns linked to anticyclonic circulation aloft over the IGP region. Although widespread IGP fog occurrences under the large-scale subsidence environment are seen to occur during both phases of AO, the negative AO phase (high pressure environment over the Arctic Circle) portends a greater likelihood for fog occurrences in the IGP region. A coupling of positive mid-tropospheric height anomalies over western Eurasia and the anticyclonic circulation anomalies over the IGP region is evident during the IGP fog periods concomitant with EU positive (height excess over Siberia) phase. Further, anomalous circulation over the IGP region during the fog periods appears to rely more on the strength of the AO negative phase than the circulation strengths over Eurasia. On the contrary, the Eurasian circulation largely appears to influence the subsidence aloft over the IGP region irrespective of the strength of the AO positive phase. It is also noted that upper-air circulation during non-foggy periods over the IGP region has conformity with positive AO phase and rapidly progressing EU pattern. These planetary-scale teleconnection pathways offer new dynamical insights into comprehending widespread IGP fog scenario, which have been hitherto perceived mostly from a regional context. Fine-scale variation in carbon stocks was identified across the Canadian continental margin, particularly in the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean regions. Carbon accumulation was predicted to be concentrated in coastal areas, with the highest rates in the Gulf of St Lawrence and Bay of Fundy. Overall, we estimate the standing stock of organic carbon in the top 30 cm of surficial seabed sediments across the Canadian shelf and slope to be 10.7 Gt (95 % CI 6.6 – 16.0 Gt), and accumulation at 4.9 Mt per year (95 % CI 2.6 – 9.3 Mt y-1). Increased in-situ sediment data collection and higher precision in spatial environmental data-layers could significantly reduce uncertainty and increase accuracy in these products over time.
