Search

Detector commanding, processing and readout of spaceborne instrumentation is often accomplished with application specific integrated circuits (ASICs). The ASIC designed for the nuclear spectroscopic telescope array (NuSTAR) mission enables future tiled CdZnTe (CZT) detector array readout for x-ray detectors, such as the high resolution energetic x-ray imager (HREXI). Modified NuSTAR ASIC (NuASIC) gain settings have been implemented for HREXI’s broader targeted imaging energy range (3 to 300 keV) compared with NuSTAR (2 to 79 keV), which may require updated NuASIC internal parameters for optimal energy resolution. To reach HREXI’s targeted low energy threshold, we have also enabled the NuASIC’s “charge pump mode,” which introduces an additional tuning parameter. We describe the mechanics of the NuASIC’s adjustable parameters and use our recently developed ASIC test stand to probe a “bare” NuASIC using its internal test pulser. We record the effects of parameter tuning on the device’s electronics noise and low energy threshold and report the optimal set of parameters for HREXI’s updated gain setting. We detail a semiautomated procedure to derive the optimal parameters for each of HREXI’s large area closely tiled NuASIC/CZT detectors to expedite instrument integration.

We present an overview of the NuSTAR non x-ray background. This is dominated by proton scattering in the detector and surrounding material as well as activation lines from of material in the detector and its housing. We also discuss contributions from the solar component (when the Sun is active), and the impact of short-lived radiation belts on the NuSTAR background and activation in the detectors.

We present here the updated calibration of the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array, which was performed using data on the Crab accumulated over the last nine years in orbit. The basis for this new calibration contains over 250 ks of focused Crab observations (imaged through the optics) and over 500 ks of stray-light (SL) Crab observations (not imaged through optics). We measured an epoch averaged spectrum of the SL Crab data and define a canonical Crab spectrum of Γ = 2.103 ± 0.001 and N = 9.69 ± 0.02 keV⁻¹ cm⁻² s⁻¹ at 1 keV, which we use as our calibration standard. This calibration released in the Calibration Data Base update 20211020 provides significant updates to: (1) the detector absorption component, (2) the detector response function, and (3) the effective area vignetting function. The calibration improves agreement between FPMA and FPMB across detectors with a standard deviation of 1.7% for repeat observations between off-axis angles of 1' to 4'. As a consequence of the measured SL observations, the absolute flux of the instrument has increased by 5% to 15%, with 5% below 1' off-axis angle, 10% between 1 and 2', and 15% above 4'.

Application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) are used in space-borne instruments for signal processing and detector readout. The electrical interface of these ASICs to frontend printed circuit boards is commonly accomplished with wire bonds. Through silicon via (TSV) technology has been proposed as an alternative interconnect technique that will reduce assembly complexity of ASIC packaging by replacing wire bonding with flip-chip bonding. TSV technology is advantageous in large detector arrays where TSVs enable close detector tiling on all sides. Wafer-level probe card testing of TSV ASICs is frustrated by solder balls introduced onto the ASIC surface for flip-chip bonding that hamper alignment. Therefore, we developed the ASIC test stand (ATS) to enable rapid screening and characterization of individual ASIC die. We successfully demonstrated ATS operation on ASICs originally developed for CdZnTe detectors on the Nuclear Spectroscopic and Telescope Array (NuSTAR) mission that were later modified with TSVs in a via-last process. We tested both backside blind-TSVs and frontside through-TSVs, with results from internal test pulser measurements that demonstrate performance equal to or exceeding the probe card wafer-level testing data. The ATS can easily be expanded or duplicated to parallelize ASIC screening for large area imaging detectors of future space programs.

This paper will describe the use of through-silicon vias (TSVs) in a readout application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) chip to replace wire bonds in the assembly of cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) X-ray detector arrays for space telescope applications. The TSV packaging approach includes solder bump connections from the back of the ASIC to the underlying board. This approach will greatly reduce the spacing between adjacent detectors in an array, eliminate potential damage to wires during assembly, and avoid any interference, which the wires can pick up during operation. We report a TSV-last integration process for the mixed signal ASIC chip used to read signals from the CZT detectors. The TSVs were integrated into existing ASIC wafers without any required redesign, and formed as blind vias from the frontside of the ASIC in metal-free areas adjacent to the wire bond pads. The TSVs were then connected to the bond pads using a routing metal layer. The wafers were bonded to temporary carriers and thinned from the backside, revealing the TSVs. After forming the redistribution lines (RDL) and under bump metallization (UBM), the wafers were released from the carriers and solder bumps were attached for subsequent assembly processes. In the sections that follow, we will review the details of the ASIC wafer post-processing, including TSV fabrication, wafer thinning, frontside and backside metallization layers, and solder bumping. We will report electrical testing of TSV daisy chains and isolation test structures. Also, results of ASIC functionality testing, performed before and after TSV insertion, will be discussed.

Application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) are commonly used to efficiently process the signals from sensors and detectors in space. Wire bonding is a space-qualified technique of making interconnections between ASICs and their substrate packaging board for power, control, and readout of the ASICs. Wire bonding is nearly ubiquitous in modern space programs, but their exposed wires can be prone to damage during assembly and subject to electric interference during operations. Additional space around the ASICs needed for wire bonding also impedes efficient packaging of large arrays of detectors. Here, we introduce the through silicon vias (TSV) technology that replaces wire bonds and eliminates their shortcomings. We have successfully demonstrated the feasibility of implementing TSVs to existing ASIC wafers (a.k.a. a via-last process) developed for processing the x-ray signals from the x-ray imaging CdZnTe detectors on the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array small explorer telescope mission that was launched in 2012. While TSVs are common in the semiconductor industry, this is the first (to our knowledge) successful application for astrophysics imaging instrumentation. We expect that the TSV technology will simplify the detector assembly and thus will enable significant cost and schedule savings in assembly of large area CdZnTe detectors.

SPHEREx, the Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization, and ices Explorer, is a NASA MIDEX mission planned for launch in 2024. SPHEREx will carry out the first all-sky spectral survey at wavelengths between 0.75µm and 5µm with spectral resolving power ~40 between 0.75 and 3.8µm and ~120 between 3.8 and 5µm At the end of its two-year mission, SPHEREx will provide 0.75-to-5µm spectra of each 6.”2 x 6.”2 pixel on the sky - 14 billion spectra in all. This paper updates an earlier description of SPHEREx presenting changes made during the mission's Preliminary Design Phase, including a discussion of instrument integration and test ow and a summary of the data processing, analysis, and distribution plans.

We present the earliest X-ray observations of the 2018 outburst of XTE J1810-197, the first outburst since its 2003 discovery as the prototypical transient and radio-emitting anomalous X-ray pulsar (AXP). The Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) detected XTE J1810-197 immediately after a November 20-26 visibility gap, contemporaneous with its reactivation as a radio pulsar, first observed on December 8. On December 13 the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NUSTAR) detected X-ray emission up to at least 30 keV, with a spectrum well-characterized by a blackbody plus power-law model with temperature kT = 0.74+/-0.02 keV and photon index Gamma = 4.4+/-0.2 or by a two-blackbody model with kT = 0.59+/-0.04 keV and kT = 1.0+/-0.1 keV, both including an additional power-law component to account for emission above 10 keV, with Gamma_h = -0.2+/-1.5 and Gamma_h = 1.5+/-0.5, respectively. The latter index is consistent with hard X-ray flux reported for the non-transient magnetars. In the 2-10 keV bandpass, the absorbed flux is 2E-10 erg/s/cm^2, a factor of 2 greater than the maximum flux extrapolated for the 2003 outburst. The peak of the sinusoidal X-ray pulse lags the radio pulse by approx. 0.13 cycles, consistent with their phase relationship during the 2003 outburst. This suggests a stable geometry in which radio emission originates on magnetic field lines containing currents that heat a spot on the neutron star surface. NuSTAR (the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope ARray) is a NASA Small Explorer (SMEX) mission launched in June of 2012. Since its launch, NuSTAR has been the preeminent instrument for spectroscopic analysis of the hard X-ray sky over the 3-80 keV bandpass. The low energy side of the bandpass is limited by the absorption along the photon path as well as by the ability of the pixels to trigger on incident photons. The on-board calibration source does not have a low-energy line that we can use to calibrate this part of the response, so instead we use the "nearest-neighbor" readout in the NuSTAR detector architecture to calibrate the individual pixel thresholds for all 8 flight detectors on both focal plane modules (FPMs). The High-Energy X-ray Probe (HEX-P) is a probe-class mission concept that will extend the reach of broadband (2-200 keV) X-ray observations, with 40 times the sensitivity of any previous mission in the 10-80 keV band and 10,000 times the sensitivity of any previous mission in the 80-200 keV band. HEX-P addresses key NASA science goals and is an important complement to ESA's L-class Athena mission. Working in coordination with Athena HEX-P will provide continuum measurements that are essential for interpreting Athena spectra. With angular resolution improved by more than an order of magnitude relative to NuSTAR, HEX-P will carry out an independent program aimed at addressing questions unique to the high energy X-ray band, such as the nature of the source that powers Active Galactic Nuclei, the evolution of black holes in obscured environments, and understanding of how compact binary systems form, evolve and influence galactic systems. With heritage from NuSTAR, HEX-P can be executed within the next decade with a budget less than double that of a Medium class Explorer (MIDEX) mission.

The Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope ARray (NuSTAR) has been in orbit for 6 years, and with the calibration data accumulated over that period we have taken a new look at the effective area calibration. The NuSTAR 10-m focal length is achieved using an extendible mast, which flexes due to solar illumination. This results in individual observations sampling a range of off-axis angles rather than a particular off-axis angle. In our new approach, we have split over 50 individual Crab observations into segments at particular off-axis angles. We combine segments from different observations at the same off-axis angle to generate a new set of synthetic spectra, which we use to calibrate the vignetting function of the optics against the canonical Crab spectrum.

The High-Energy X-ray Probe (HEX-P) is a probe-class next-generation high-energy X-ray mission concept that will vastly extend the reach of broadband X-ray observations. Studying the 2-200 keV energy range, HEXP has 40 times the sensitivity of any previous mission in the 10-80 keV band, and will be the first focusing instrument in the 80-200 keV band. A successor to the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR), a NASA Small Explorer launched in 2012, HEX-P addresses key NASA science objectives, and will serve as an important complement to ESA's L-class Athena mission. HEX-P will utilize multilayer coated X-ray optics, and in this paper we present the details of the optical design, and discuss the multilayer prescriptions necessary for the reflection of hard X-ray photons. We consider multiple module designs with the aim of investigating the tradeoff between high- and low-energy effective area, and review the technology development necessary to reach that goal within the next decade.

The Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) launched in June 2012, flies two conical approximation Wolter-I mirrors at the end of a 10.15-m mast. The optics are coated with multilayers of Pt/C and W/Si that operate from 3 to 80 keV. Since the optical path is not shrouded, aperture stops are used to limit the field of view (FoV) from background and sources outside the FoV. However, there is still a sliver of sky (∼1.0 deg to 4.0 deg) where photons may bypass the optics altogether and fall directly on the detector array. We term these photons stray light. Additionally, there are also photons that do not undergo the focused double reflections in the optics, and we term these ghost rays. We present detailed analysis and characterization of these two components and discuss how they impact observations. Finally, we discuss how they could have been prevented and should be in future observatories.

Wirebonds, although proven for space application and perceived necessary for hybrid sensors like CdZnTe (CZT) detectors, introduce assembly complexity and undesirable gaps between detector units. Thus, they pose a serious challenge in building a low cost large area detector. We are developing Through-Silicon Vias (TSVs) to make all connections (both power and data) through ASICs, which will eliminate wirebonds and enable simple direct flip-chip bonding between the ASIC and a substrate electronics layer. TSVs also enable a more compact layout of the ASIC, which reduces the inactive area of the detector plane, and thus enables nearly gaplessly tilable detector arrays. We demonstrate the first successful TSV implementation on ASICs used for CZT detectors onboard the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) mission as part of our program to develop large area CZT imagers for wide field coded aperture imaging.

Pixelated Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CdZnTe) detectors are currently flying on the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope ARray (NuSTAR) NASA Astrophysics Small Explorer. While the pixel pitch of the detectors is ≈ 605 μm, we can leverage the detector readout architecture to determine the interaction location of an individual photon to much higher spatial accuracy. The sub-pixel spatial location allows us to finely oversample the point spread function of the optics and reduces imaging artifacts due to pixelation. In this paper we demonstrate how the sub-pixel information is obtained, how the detectors were calibrated, and provide ground verification of the quantum efficiency of our Monte Carlo model of the detector response.

Asymmetry is required by most numerical simulations of stellar core-collapse explosions, but the form it takes differs significantly among models. The spatial distribution of radioactive 44Ti, synthesized in an exploding star near the boundary between material falling back onto the collapsing core and that ejected into the surrounding medium, directly probes the explosion asymmetries. CassiopeiaA is a young, nearby, core-collapse remnant from which 44Ti emission has previously been detected but not imaged. Asymmetries in the explosion have been indirectly inferred from a high ratio of observed 44Ti emission to estimated 56Ni emission, from optical light echoes, and from jet-like features seen in the X-ray and optical ejecta. Here we report spatial maps and spectral properties of the 44Ti in Cassiopeia A. This may explain the unexpected lack of correlation between the 44Ti and iron X-ray emission, the latter being visible only in shock-heated material. The observed spatial distribution rules out symmetric explosions even with a high level of convective mixing, as well as highly asymmetric bipolar explosions resulting from a fast-rotating progenitor. We have assembled a tiled array (220 cm2) of fine pixel (0.6 mm) imaging CZT detectors for a balloon borne wide-field hard X-ray telescope, ProtoEXIST2. ProtoEXIST2 is a prototype experiment for a next generation hard X-ray imager MIRAX-HXI on board Lattes, a spacecraft from the Agencia Espacial Brasilieira. MIRAX will survey the 5 to 200 keV sky of Galactic bulge, adjoining southern Galactic plane and the extragalactic sky with 6' angular resolution. This survey will open a vast discovery space in timing studies of accretion neutron stars and black holes. The ProtoEXIST2 CZT detector plane consists of 64 of 5 mm thick 2 cm x 2 cm CZT crystals tiled with a minimal gap. MIRAX will consist of 4 such detector planes, each of which will be imaged with its own coded-aperture mask. We present the packaging architecture and assembly procedure of the ProtoEXIST2 detector. On 2012, Oct 10, we conducted a successful high altitude balloon experiment of the ProtoEXIST1 and 2 telescopes, which demonstrates their technology readiness for space application. During the flight both telescopes performed as well as on the ground. We present a catalog of hard X-ray sources in a square-degree region surveyed by NuSTAR in the direction of the Norma spiral arm. This survey has a total exposure time of 1.7 Ms, and typical and maximum exposure depths of 50 ks and 1 Ms, respectively. In the area of deepest coverage, sensitivity limits of $5\times10^{-14}$ and $4\times10^{-14}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ in the 3-10 and 10-20 keV bands, respectively, are reached. Twenty-eight sources are firmly detected and ten are detected with low significance; eight of the 38 sources are expected to be active galactic nuclei. The three brightest sources were previously identified as a low-mass X-ray binary, high-mass X-ray binary, and pulsar wind nebula. Based on their X-ray properties and multi-wavelength counterparts, we identify the likely nature of the other sources as two colliding wind binaries, three pulsar wind nebulae, a black hole binary, and a plurality of cataclysmic variables (CVs). The CV candidates in the Norma region have plasma temperatures of $\approx$10-20 keV, consistent with the Galactic Ridge X-ray emission spectrum but lower than temperatures of CVs near the Galactic Center. This temperature difference may indicate that the Norma region has a lower fraction of intermediate polars relative to other types of CVs compared to the Galactic Center. The NuSTAR log$N$-log$S$ distribution in the 10-20 keV band is consistent with the distribution measured by Chandra at 2-10 keV if the average source spectrum is assumed to be a thermal model with $kT\approx15$~keV, as observed for the CV candidates., Comment: 42 pages, 12 figures, 11 tables

With the first direct detection of merging black holes in 2015, the era of gravitational wave (GW) astrophysics began. A complete picture of compact object mergers, however, requires the detection of an electromagnetic (EM) counterpart. We report ultraviolet (UV) and X-ray observations by Swift and the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope ARray (NuSTAR) of the EM counterpart of the binary neutron star merger GW170817. The bright, rapidly fading ultraviolet emission indicates a high mass ($\approx0.03$ solar masses) wind-driven outflow with moderate electron fraction ($Y_{e}\approx0.27$). Combined with the X-ray limits, we favor an observer viewing angle of $\approx 30^{\circ}$ away from the orbital rotation axis, which avoids both obscuration from the heaviest elements in the orbital plane and a direct view of any ultra-relativistic, highly collimated ejecta (a gamma-ray burst afterglow)., Science, in press; 56 pages, 12 figures

The distribution of elements produced in the inner-most layers of a supernova explosion is a key diagnostic for studying the collapse of massive stars. Here we present the results of a 2.4 Ms \textit{NuSTAR} observing campaign aimed at studying the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A (Cas A). We perform spatially-resolved spectroscopic analyses of the $^{44}$Ti ejecta which we use to determine the Doppler shift and thus the three-dimensional (3D) velocities of the $^{44}$Ti ejecta. We find an initial $^{44}$Ti mass of 1.54 $\pm$ 0.21 $\times 10^{-4}$ M$_{\odot}$ which has a present day average momentum direction of 340$^{\circ}$ $\pm$ 15$^{\circ}$ projected on to the plane of the sky (measured clockwise from Celestial North) and tilted by 58$^{\circ}$ $\pm$ 20$^{\circ}$ into the plane of the sky away from the observer, roughly opposite to the inferred direction of motion of the central compact object. We find some $^{44}$Ti ejecta that are clearly interior to the reverse shock and some that are clearly exterior to the reverse shock. Where we observe $^{44}$Ti ejecta exterior to the reverse shock we also see shock-heated iron; however, there are regions where we see iron but do not observe $^{44}$Ti. This suggests that the local conditions of the supernova shock during explosive nucleosynthesis varied enough to suppress the production of $^{44}$Ti in some regions by at least a factor of two, even in regions that are assumed to be the result of processes like $\alpha$-rich freezeout that should produce both iron and titanium., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures (6 3D animations in the online journal). We present the 3-8 keV and 8-24 keV number counts of active galactic nuclei (AGN) identified in the NuSTAR extragalactic surveys. NuSTAR has now resolved 33-39% of the X-ray background in the 8-24 keV band, directly identifying AGN with obscuring columns up to approximately 1e25 /cm2. In the softer 3-8 keV band the number counts are in general agreement with those measured by XMM-Newton and Chandra over the flux range 5e-15 < S(3 - 8 keV)/(erg/cm2/s) < 1e-12 probed by NuSTAR. In the hard 8-24 keV band NuSTAR probes fluxes over the range 2e-14 < S(8-24 keV)/(erg/cm2/s) < 1e-12, a factor of approximately 100 fainter than previous measurements. The 8-24 keV number counts match predictions from AGN population synthesis models, directly confirming the existence of a population of obscured and/or hard X-ray sources inferred from the shape of the integrated cosmic X-ray background. The measured NuSTAR counts lie significantly above simple extrapolation with a Euclidian slope to low flux of the Swift/BAT 15-55 keV number counts measured at higher fluxes S(15-55 keV) > 1e-11 erg/cm2/s, reflecting the evolution of the AGN population between the Swift/BAT local (z, 8 pages; accepted by the Astrophysical Journal

The Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) is the first focusing high energy (3-79 keV) X-ray observatory operating for four years from low Earth orbit. The X-ray detector arrays are located on the spacecraft bus with the optics modules mounted on a flexible mast of 10.14m length. The motion of the telescope optical axis on the detectors during each observation is measured by a laser metrology system and matches the pre-launch predictions of the thermal flexing of the mast as the spacecraft enters and exits the Earths shadow each orbit. However, an additional motion of the telescope field of view was discovered during observatory commissioning that is associated with the spacecraft attitude control system and an additional flexing of the mast correlated with the Solar aspect angle for the observation. We present the methodology developed to predict where any particular target coordinate will fall on the NuSTAR detectors based on the Solar aspect angle at the scheduled time of an observation. This may be applicable to future observatories that employ optics deployed on extendable masts. A commercial position sensing detector (PSD) has been used to measure mast deflections on a space based X-ray telescope (NuSTAR). This paper describes the space qualification process for utilizing a commercial PSD sensor in space. This discussion includes packaging, environmental testing, selection of flight candidate devices, calibration and alignment.

Gas electron multipliers with a liquid crystal polymer insulator (LCP-GEMs) can be employed as X-ray polarimeters in several satellite missions in low-earth orbit. To evaluate their resistance to radiation, LCP-GEMs were exposed to Fe ion and proton beams from the heavy-ion accelerator facility HIMAC, and the gas gain was monitored. The LCP-GEMs survived 14.4-year-equivalent irradiation by fully stripped Fe ions with an energy of 500 MeV nuc-1, which simulated galactic cosmic-ray ions. We also studied the degradation of the insulator layer of the LCP-GEMs by irradiation with 160 MeV protons to simulate geomagnetically trapped protons. After irradiation with protons for 31.6 years equivalent, no significant change in gain was observed.

This paper describes the Polarization Spectroscopic Telescope Array (PolSTAR), a mission proposed to NASA's 2014 Small Explorer (SMEX) announcement of opportunity. PolSTAR measures the linear polarization of 3-50 keV (requirement; goal: 2.5-70 keV) X-rays probing the behavior of matter, radiation and the very fabric of spacetime under the extreme conditions close to the event horizons of black holes, as well as in and around magnetars and neutron stars. The PolSTAR design is based on the technology developed for the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) mission launched in June 2012. In particular, it uses the same X-ray optics, extendable telescope boom, optical bench, and CdZnTe detectors as NuSTAR. The mission has the sensitivity to measure ~1% linear polarization fractions for X-ray sources with fluxes down to ~5 mCrab. We report the first hard X-ray observations with NuSTAR of the BL Lac type blazar PKS 2155-304, augmented with soft X-ray data from XMM-Newton and gamma-ray data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope, obtained in April 2013 when the source was in a very low flux state. A joint NuSTAR and XMM spectrum, covering the energy range 0.5 - 60 keV, is best described by a model consisting of a log-parabola component with curvature beta = 0.3(+0.2,-0.1) and a (local) photon index 3.04 +/- 0.15 at photon energy of 2 keV, and a hard power-law tail with photon index 2.2 +/- 0.4. The hard X-ray tail can be smoothly joined to the quasi-simultaneous gamma-ray spectrum by a synchrotron self-Compton component produced by an electron distribution with index p = 2.2. Assuming that the power-law electron distribution extends down to the minimum electron Lorentz factor gamma_min = 1 and that there is one proton per electron, an unrealistically high total jet power L_p of roughly 10^47 erg/s is inferred. This can be reduced by two orders of magnitude either by considering a significant presence of electron-positron pairs with lepton-to-proton ratio of at least 30, or by introducing an additional, low-energy break in the electron energy distribution at the electron Lorentz factor gamma_br1 of roughly 100. We present results from the the first campaign of dedicated solar observations undertaken by the \textit{Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope ARray} ({\em NuSTAR}) hard X-ray telescope. Designed as an astrophysics mission, {\em NuSTAR} nonetheless has the capability of directly imaging the Sun at hard X-ray energies ($>$3~keV) with an increase in sensitivity of at least two magnitude compared to current non-focusing telescopes. In this paper we describe the scientific areas where \textit{NuSTAR} will make major improvements on existing solar measurements. We report on the techniques used to observe the Sun with \textit{NuSTAR}, their limitations and complications, and the procedures developed to optimize solar data quality derived from our experience with the initial solar observations. These first observations are briefly described, including the measurement of the Fe K-shell lines in a decaying X-class flare, hard X-ray emission from high in the solar corona, and full-disk hard X-ray images of the Sun., 11 pages, accepted to ApJ

We present spectral analysis of NuSTAR and Swift observations of Cep X-4 during its outburst in 2014. We observed the source once during the peak of the outburst and once during the decay, finding good agreement in the spectral shape between the observations. We describe the continuum using a powerlaw with a Fermi-Dirac cutoff at high energies. Cep X-4 has a very strong cyclotron resonant scattering feature (CRSF) around 30 keV. A simple absorption-like line with a Gaussian optical depth or a pseudo-Lorentzian profile both fail to describe the shape of the CRSF accurately, leaving significant deviations at the red side of the line. We characterize this asymmetry with a second absorption feature around 19 keV. The line energy of the CRSF, which is not influenced by the addition of this feature, shows a small but significant positive luminosity dependence. With luminosities between (1-6)e36 erg/s, Cep X-4 is below the theoretical limit where such a correlation is expected. Fine-pitch gas electron multiplier (GEM) foils have been produced for cosmic X-ray polarimeters using a carbon dioxide laser etching technique. The finest hole pitch of the foil which can be produced repeatedly is 50 μ m and the smallest hole diameter is 30 μ m . The electron amplification factor was measured as a function of applied voltage. The behavior of the factor is almost the same as the 140 μ m -pitch standard foil fabricated by CERN. Our GEMs had no rate-dependent gain instability, which is expected of the GEMs having holes of good cylindrical geometry. The amplification factor of the 50 μ m foil in a mixture of 70% argon and 30% carbon dioxide reaches about 5000 without any micro-discharge at a voltage of 570 V between foil electrodes.

We are developing a fiber type two-dimentional (2-D) position-sensitive detector having a spatial resolution less than 0.5 mm in order to use it in the time-of-flight (TOF) measurements. The detector performance was examined, and some experiments on the TOF radiography were performed using this detector. The results indicated that the detector could be applied successfully to the TOF measurement and that the TOF radiography was very useful since it gave more informative data than those obtained by the conventional radiography using a broad energy band.

A superconducting tunnel junction (STJ) is very attractive for use in high-energy-resolution photon detectors because of its small energy gap. To detect a single photon, the Josephson current of the STJ has had to be suppressed by an external magnetic field. We demonstrated an on-chip coil-integrated STJ photon detector, which excludes the external magnetic field, allowing a small device size. A normal-distribution function shape was adopted for the superconducting electrodes, which makes the magnetic field supplied to the STJ small. We devise a new superconducting photon detector by combining the above techniques. A new Josephson switching gate is also integrated on the same detector chip in order to drive an on-chip integrated coil by a persistent superconducting current. This behavior was confirmed experimentally using the technology of the fabrication process of the Nb/Al-AlOx/Nb Josephson tunnel junction.

We applied a scintillator-based area detector to the neutron time-of-flight method by developing a new electronics system for this detector, which detector consists of a thin plate of ZnS(Ag)+6Li scintillator optically coupled to wavelength shifter. The spatial resolution was about 0.4mm which is consistent with a fiber width of 0.4 mm. The detection efficiency for thermal neutrons was about 6%. A good-resolution radiographic-image as a function of flight time was obtained.

We present deep ($>$2.4 Ms) observations of the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant with {\it NuSTAR}, which operates in the 3--79 keV bandpass and is the first instrument capable of spatially resolving the remnant above 15 keV. We find that the emission is not entirely dominated by the forward shock nor by a smooth "bright ring" at the reverse shock. Instead we find that the $>$15 keV emission is dominated by knots near the center of the remnant and dimmer filaments near the remnant's outer rim. These regions are fit with unbroken power-laws in the 15--50 keV bandpass, though the central knots have a steeper ($\Gamma \sim -3.35$) spectrum than the outer filaments ($\Gamma \sim -3.06$). We argue this difference implies that the central knots are located in the 3-D interior of the remnant rather than at the outer rim of the remnant and seen in the center due to projection effects. The morphology of $>$15 keV emission does not follow that of the radio emission nor that of the low energy ($$15 keV emission as an open mystery. Even at the forward shock front we find less steepening of the spectrum than expected from an exponentially cut off electron distribution with a single cutoff energy. Finally, we find that the GeV emission is not associated with the bright features in the {\it NuSTAR} band while the TeV emission may be, suggesting that both hadronic and leptonic emission mechanisms may be at work., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the calibration of the \textit{Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array} (\nustar) X-ray satellite. We used the Crab as the primary effective area calibrator and constructed a piece-wise linear spline function to modify the vignetting response. The achieved residuals for all off-axis angles and energies, compared to the assumed spectrum, are typically better than $\pm 2$\% up to 40\,keV and 5--10\,\% above due to limited counting statistics. An empirical adjustment to the theoretical 2D point spread function (PSF) was found using several strong point sources, and no increase of the PSF half power diameter (HPD) has been observed since the beginning of the mission. We report on the detector gain calibration, good to 60\,eV for all grades, and discuss the timing capabilities of the observatory, which has an absolute timing of $\pm$ 3\,ms. Finally we present cross-calibration results from two campaigns between all the major concurrent X-ray observatories (\textit{Chandra}, \textit{Swift}, \textit{Suzaku} and \textit{XMM-Newton}), conducted in 2012 and 2013 on the sources 3C\,273 and PKS\,2155-304, and show that the differences in measured flux is within $\sim$10\% for all instruments with respect to \nustar.

We present the first sub-arcminute images of the Galactic Center above 10 keV, obtained with NuSTAR. NuSTAR resolves the hard X-ray source IGR J17456-2901 into non-thermal X-ray filaments, molecular clouds, point sources and a previously unknown central component of hard X-ray emission (CHXE). NuSTAR detects four non-thermal X-ray filaments, extending the detection of their power-law spectra with $\Gamma\sim1.3$-$2.3$ up to ~50 keV. A morphological and spectral study of the filaments suggests that their origin may be heterogeneous, where previous studies suggested a common origin in young pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe). NuSTAR detects non-thermal X-ray continuum emission spatially correlated with the 6.4 keV Fe K$\alpha$ fluorescence line emission associated with two Sgr A molecular clouds: MC1 and the Bridge. Broad-band X-ray spectral analysis with a Monte-Carlo based X-ray reflection model self-consistently determined their intrinsic column density ($\sim10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$), primary X-ray spectra (power-laws with $\Gamma\sim2$) and set a lower limit of the X-ray luminosity of Sgr A* flare illuminating the Sgr A clouds to $L_X \stackrel{>}{\sim} 10^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Above ~20 keV, hard X-ray emission in the central 10 pc region around Sgr A* consists of the candidate PWN G359.95-0.04 and the CHXE, possibly resulting from an unresolved population of massive CVs with white dwarf masses $M_{\rm WD} \sim 0.9 M_{\odot}$. Spectral energy distribution analysis suggests that G359.95-0.04 is likely the hard X-ray counterpart of the ultra-high gamma-ray source HESS J1745-290, strongly favoring a leptonic origin of the GC TeV emission., Comment: 27 pages. On-chip coil integrated superconducting tunnel junction (OC 2 -STJ) has been demonstrated for high performance X-ray detector. The STJ was fabricated by an improved fabrication technique based on a high quality Nb/Al/AlO x /Nb junction technology. The STJ shows high quality current–voltage characteristics with an ultra-low leakage current of a few nA at 0.4 K for 100 μm ×100 μm junction. Typical critical current of the coil was achieved more than 50 mA for 2 μm line width, which can generate a magnetic field of about 10 mT into the STJ. It was found that the OC 2 -STJ successfully responded to the irradiated 5.9 keV X-ray.

A superconducting tunnel junction (STJ) is a newly developed X-ray detector which has advantages of not only high energy-resolution but also timing information and high counting-rates. The STJ fabricated in RIKEN has a layered structure of Nb (200 nm-thick, lower electrode)/Al (50 nm)/AlOx/Al (50 nm)/Nb (150 nm, upper electrode). Its sensitive region has an area of 100×100 μ m2. The output signals were amplified by either a charge-sensitive amplifier or a SQUID amplifier. We used the STJ to measure X-rays emitted in collisions of highly charged ions with various solid targets. The ions used were Ne, O and Ar of 10 kV/q extracted from an ECR ion source at RIKEN. The X-ray spectra from 500 to 900 eV were obtained with an energy-resolution of 20–30 eV at a counting-rate higher than 500 counts/s.

We are developing an energy-dispersive detector for UV and visible photons that uses superconducting tunnel junctions (STJs) with Al trapping layers. As a first step to achieve this, we evaluated the performance of the detector for extreme ultraviolet (EUV) photons by using a synchrotron radiation facility. We achieved an energy resolution of FWHM=17.8±0.6 eV (including electrical noise of 17.6±0.2 eV) for 55 eV EUV photons with a 100×100 μm2 STJ. The electrical noise was the main component of the energy resolution. We achieved the electrical noise of FWHM=2.1±0.1 eV for a 20×20 μm2 STJ by replacing the cables connecting the STJ to a preamplifier operated at room temperature. A stronger signal resulting from a thinner tunnel barrier will lead to better energy resolution for detecting UV and visible photons.

Solar cycle variations of modulation parameters are derived from cosmic-ray anisotropy observed by a network of multidirectional muon telescopes. The network covers wide ranges of median rigidity of primary cosmic-rays and effective latitude of viewing. It was found that the radial density gradient varies with a good correlation with the solar activity, while the parallel mean-free-path of the cosmic-ray diffusion varies with an anti-correlation with the solar activity. These features are both in accord with the conventional modulation theory incorporating convection and diffusion processes. The correlation coefficients of yearly mean values of radial density gradient and parallel mean-free-path with the sunspot number were respectively 0.7 and 0.6. The bi-directional latitudinal gradient showed a clear 22-year solar magnetic cycle as predicted by the drift model for the cosmic-ray transport in the heliosphere. The unidirectional latitudinal gradient, on the other hand, showed no clear variation related to the 11-year solar activity or 22-year solar magnetic-cycles, but it remains positive after the late 80's implying a higher density of cosmic-rays in the southern hemisphere below the heliospheric current sheet. We also analyze temporal variations of modulation parameters derived from neutron monitor observations at ∼10 GV. By comparing with those obtained from muon observations at 60 GV, we discuss the rigidity dependence of temporal variations of modulation parameters.

Superconducting tunnel junctions (STJs) are applicable to as photon detectors with an energy resolution and a high photon-counting rate. The absorption of a photon in the superconductor of the STJ generates a number of quasiparticles that is proportional to the photon energy. Especially for soft X-ray and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) applications, STJs have good performance because of their high absorption efficiency below 1 keV. We are developing an energy-dispersive photon detector for EUV radiation using STJs with Al trapping layers. We evaluated the performance of the detector for EUV photons by using the Synchrotron Facility at KEK-PF in Tsukuba, Japan. We achieved an energy resolution of FWHM=18 eV (including the external noise of 17.6 eV) for 55 eV EUV photons with a 100 × 100 μ m 2 STJ. We present details of the junction design and discuss our experiments and the results.

As of 2014 August, the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) had observed ~30 X-ray binaries either as part of the planned program, as targets of opportunity, or for instrument calibration. The main science goals for the observations include probing the inner part of the accretion disk and constraining black hole spins via reflection components, providing the first observations of hard X-ray emission from quiescent Low Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), measuring cyclotron lines from accreting pulsars, and studying type I X-ray bursts from neutron stars. Here, we describe the science objectives in more depth and give an overview of the NuSTAR observations that have been carried out to achieve the objectives. These include observation of four "IGR" High Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) discovered by INTEGRAL. We also summarize the results that have been obtained and their implications. The Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) is the first focusing high energy (3-79 keV) X-ray observatory. The NuSTAR project is led by Caltech, which hosts the Science Operations Center (SOC), with mission operations managed by UCB Space Sciences Laboratory. We present an overview of NuSTAR science operations and describe the on-orbit performance of the observatory. The SOC is enhancing science operations to serve the community with a guest observing program beginning in 2015. We present some of the challenges and approaches taken by the SOC to operating a full service space observatory that maximizes the scientific return from the mission.

The Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) satellite is a NASA Small Explorer mission designed to operate the first focusing high-energy X-ray (3-79 keV) telescope in orbit. Since the launch in June 2012, all the NuSTAR components have been working normally. The focal plane module is equipped with an 155Eu radioactive source to irradiate the CdZnTe pixel detectors for independent calibration separately from optics. The inflight spectral calibration of the CdZnTe detectors is performed with the onboard 155Eu source. The derived detector performance agrees well with ground-measured data. The in-orbit detector background rate is stable and the lowest among past high-energy X-ray instruments.

The Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) mission was launched on 2012 June 13 and is the first focusing high-energy X-ray telescope in orbit operating above ~10 keV. NuSTAR flies two co-aligned Wolter-I conical approximation X-ray optics, coated with Pt/C and W/Si multilayers, and combined with a focal length of 10.14 meters this enables operation from 3-79 keV. The optics focus onto two focal plane arrays, each consisting of 4 CdZnTe pixel detectors, for a field of view of 12.5 arcminutes. The inherently low background associated with concentrating the X-ray light enables NuSTAR to probe the hard X-ray sky with a more than 100-fold improvement in sensitivity, and with an effective point spread function FWHM of 18 arcseconds (HPD ~1), NuSTAR provides a leap of improvement in resolution over the collimated or coded mask instruments that have operated in this bandpass. We present in-orbit performance details of the observatory and highlight important science results from the first two years of the mission.

We succeeded in separating the STJ upper electrode events from other electrode events. This study is for X-ray spectroscopy of slow ions. With a SQUID amplifier, it is clearly seen that the upper electrode signal has a sharp peak with a narrow base, while the other has a relatively gentle peak with a wide base. The difference in signal width was used to separate the upper electrode events from other electrode events. Then the X-ray spectroscopy of slow highly charged ions was carried out at RIKEN. The results are shown here.
